When Kate Freund was a child, she wanted to learn how to fight. But her mother signed her up for dance classes instead. However, the dance lessons didn’t supplant her desire to kick ass. Freund instead combined these two passions into Pretty Lethal; a screenplay about a group of ballerinas who must battle their way out of a bar full of criminals. The film took over a decade to see the light of day. After many starts and stops, it was released earlier this year on Amazon Prime with a stacked cast that includes Uma Thurman, Maddie Ziegler, Lana Condor, Avantika and Iris Apatow. We talk to Freund about her journey to get Pretty Lethal on-screen. Whether you’re watching Showgirls, Face/Off, Bound or one of her countless other films, one thing you can be sure of is that when Gina Gershon shows up on a movie screen, she’s not taking any crap from anyone. It’s no surprise then that she also doesn’t suffer fools in her personal life. And her new memoir, AlphaPussy, offers stories and advice to guide others on how to navigate the world as she does. We talk to Gershon about the book, working with Robert Altman on The Player and her battles with Paul Verhoeven while filming Showgirls. And we also get to see the AlphaPussy in action as she lets us know how frustrated she got attempting to sign into our video chat. And while they may be prepared for him to speak in mysterious ways, it’s safe to say that they don’t expect to hear him via a Kier statue that’s doing bad comedy alongside Seth Milchick. But that’s exactly what Mark and Helly got in the season two finale of Severance. We talk to Marc Geller, who plays Kier on the show, about his unusual role, his desire to film a Kier flashback episode and what it was like working with Eric Andre on the Eric Andre Show. The members of the Belfast hip hop group Kneecap had every reason to be skeptical in 2019 when they were approached by someone claiming to be a filmmaker who wanted to tell their story. Luckily, over many, many pints of Guinness, writer/director Rich Peppiatt was able to talk Moglaí Bap, Mo Chara and DJ Provaí into telling their story in a kinetic, entertaining biopic that hits theaters tomorrow. We chatted with the band and writer/director about the film, the fight to get Irish recognized as a language in the north of Ireland and the chaotic decision to release a new album and movie simultaneously.
