This is Danielle Fishel from Pod Meets World. Back to school. Shopping used to be so simple, and then my kids developed opinions. Apparently, not just any shoe will do. Luckily, Famous Footwear makes that part easy because they carry all the brands they actually want, like Nike, Adidas, New Balance, Jordan, and more. Everyone gets the shoes they want. I get great prices. And we can cross one more thing off the back to school list. That's a parenting win in my book. Right now, it's bogo. Buy one pair, get one half off at Famous footwear. Shop in store to get $10 to spend this fall. Some exclusions apply. Plus, join Famous Rewards to get their best benefits, including free shipping.
Sean Clements
Movies, right, Ben?
Ben Stiller
Yeah, Mov.
Sean Clements
That's what we do.
Ryan Stanger
Can you believe it?
Kalpen (Kal Penn)
Not again.
Ryan Stanger
Can you believe it?
Sean Clements
Who, me? Again? Another movies. Can you believe this is our job, man?
Ben Stiller
Every day.
Sean Clements
I'm at work right now. That's insane. I'm at work, right?
Ben Stiller
You know, like. Right, Right. Doing a podcast.
Sean Clements
Well, but we're filming it, aren't we?
Ben Stiller
Oh, yeah.
Sean Clements
In a way, it's another movie. Like, you know, people say, oh, who's been in more movies? You or Ben Stiller? A lot of people would say, oh, Ben Stiller. But I go, I actually put out, like, three movies a week.
Ryan Stanger
Check IMDb. Yeah, right. We post them all to IMDb.
Sean Clements
Yeah, we're starting to get each individual episode credited to IMDb as a film.
Ben Stiller
I also think the definition of what is a movie has kind of changed anyway, too. Right?
Sean Clements
Thank you. Yes. You're making my point. Oh, yeah, it's totally changed. What do you think it is now?
Ben Stiller
I think it's. It's images and words being spoken, captured by some sort of technology and then presented in a linear fashion.
Sean Clements
Okay, call Webster's. Hey, Webster, you're out of a job. I got a new guy.
Ben Stiller
It's me and Chris. Share that viewpoint.
Sean Clements
You and Nolan. Yeah. Speaking of which. Speaking of which, we got to do a Barbenheimer.
Ben Stiller
With what?
Ryan Stanger
With Chris.
Sean Clements
With Chris. So the. So the dink is coming out. You know, we got the world premiere tomorrow right here in la.
Ben Stiller
Right.
Sean Clements
And then the Odyssey, same time. We haven't done a Barbenheimer in like three years.
Ryan Stanger
Dink and Dizzy.
Sean Clements
Dink To See.
Ben Stiller
I think.
Sean Clements
I think.
Ben Stiller
Dc, I like.
Ryan Stanger
I think it's Dinkin.
Sean Clements
Dizzy Dinkin.
Ben Stiller
Dc, I think A seat.
Sean Clements
The Dinkus.
Ryan Stanger
I think it's Dinkin. Dizzy.
Sean Clements
The Dinkussy.
Ryan Stanger
I think we had it.
Sean Clements
Dinkin to See.
Ben Stiller
Dinkin to See.
Sean Clements
Dinkin to See.
Ryan Stanger
Oh, Dinkin. That's nice.
Ben Stiller
Yeah. Dinkin to See is good.
Sean Clements
I think we gotta do that.
Ben Stiller
Yeah, I love that. And also, like, it hasn't really been done with like a theatrical and a streamer at the same time.
Ryan Stanger
It's such a mistake. Because you can do both at once.
Sean Clements
Well, yeah, exactly. You can bring your device into the theater and then while some half the audience could be watching the screen, the imax or the 70 millimeter, like sort of giant, immersive, sort of a little bit grotesque, you know, kind of like, look at me, I'm so big, you know? Oh, I'm so big. I'm so long. Like, you know, kind of like show offy movie. Then other people can do sort of an intimate, cozy, very human film on their phone or on their neighbor's phone
Ryan Stanger
that you can bring around with you. It's like, oh, those like big computers from before. Like the huge ones. Were those better? We don't like those anymore. We like little ones.
Sean Clements
We want the smaller ones. And I think you think the odyssey is what, four and a half hours, five hours, whatever. So. And our movies, 100 minutes. So I think what you do is not all five hours can be scenes you want to watch.
Ryan Stanger
Oh, yeah.
Sean Clements
So you watch some scenes. Maybe a scene you don't want.
Danielle Fishel
Okay.
Sean Clements
Check in over here. See what's going on with Ben. Being a funny doctor.
Ben Stiller
I like that. Yeah. And also because our runtime is a little bit shorter.
Sean Clements
Yes.
Ben Stiller
You could actually watch it like three times, probably within one showing of Started Over.
Sean Clements
By the way, if there's scenes in our movie you want to skip then now, you know. Okay, I can just skip to the parts I like.
Ben Stiller
You know, Exactly.
Kalpen (Kal Penn)
Or you can.
Ben Stiller
Like when you get to, like, the Trojan Horse part of the Odyssey. I haven't seen it yet, but I know that's a big part of it.
Sean Clements
They have to do that, right?
Ben Stiller
Yeah, you got to do that. But then maybe that's. You stop streaming the Dink for a second just to watch, you know, like one of the set pieces well, maybe watch both at the same time.
Ryan Stanger
The other thing I was process what happened in the dink.
Ben Stiller
Well, process it. Right.
Ryan Stanger
Just talk about it. Have a little like, discussion moment.
Sean Clements
Could be good to have. Yeah. Some sections of the audience with like a men's group during the Odyssey.
Ben Stiller
Yes.
Sean Clements
Sort of discuss it.
Kalpen (Kal Penn)
Yeah.
Sean Clements
With a men's group. Because there's father and son themes in both films, I think. And I think that what we can do, ours is period accurate.
Advertiser Voice
Of course.
Sean Clements
What we can do is sort of find common ground between the two movies the way that Barbenheimer did too. Right.
Ben Stiller
Our.
Ryan Stanger
Our movie rocks. I want to make sure this thing gets its due promotionally. You made the damn thing.
Sean Clements
Thank you. By the way, I got the gear on. You see this?
Ben Stiller
What do you got?
Sean Clements
So this is Mountain Crest Tennis Club. This is from the movie.
Ryan Stanger
Yeah.
Ben Stiller
Love it. I love it.
Sean Clements
This is from the movie. I wore this today. Speaking of it getting its due. And speaking of Trojan Horse, I'm going to tie all this together. Trojan Horse sort of trickery, right. People expect to get one thing and then, you know, boom, surprise. Here you go. So I know obviously, Ben, your not coming to the premiere tomorrow, but why
Ben Stiller
do you put quota Ben?
Ryan Stanger
Well, I know obviously people are amazing when you show up.
Sean Clements
Oh, Ben's in London. Ben's not coming. Are we thinking like God square suit onto the red carpet, like just jump off a skyscraper. It's Century City, you know what I mean? So I think like you could actually go off the top of like the Westfield Mall.
Ryan Stanger
Yeah. And.
Sean Clements
And comes zooming down in. Right.
Ben Stiller
Yeah.
Sean Clements
I land, you've got a remote control in your mouth and you start operating a drone show, you know?
Ben Stiller
Yes. Yeah, I think that's a great idea. I wish we had thought of that earlier. I could.
Kalpen (Kal Penn)
I.
Ben Stiller
Because I'm. I'm in shooting.
Sean Clements
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Ryan Stanger
Crazy. Still doing the.
Sean Clements
So committed. It's like this won't release. Just to assuage your fears. This won't release until afterwards. So this will come out Tuesday. So you'll already have sort of done the magnificent stunt squirrel suit onto like Harley Davidson.
Ben Stiller
Yeah.
Sean Clements
Surf on the top of. And like what.
Ben Stiller
Like what Tom Cruise did for the. Remember the. The Olympics handoff.
Sean Clements
Oh, yeah, that's. Yeah, that's almost exactly what I'm picking.
Ben Stiller
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking about too. And I'm thinking that would be great. And also, you know, even if it wasn't me, actually me, you know what I mean? Like just somebody wearing a mask or something like you know what I mean? But like representing me, I have a stuntman that I work with, Greg Fitzpatrick. Maybe Greg could do it with like some sort of like a mask, you
Ryan Stanger
know what I mean?
Ben Stiller
Or like, or, you know what I'm saying? Just to like the idea of me, you know what I mean? Like, oh, this is Ben. He couldn't be here.
Sean Clements
But yes, I know.
Ryan Stanger
Obviously he's kidding. He knows that it's really important that he'd be there.
Sean Clements
I love the coverage of like, we could it, even if it wasn't you.
Ben Stiller
Right?
Sean Clements
And then plus you're going to be there. So the stuntman does all of it. He rides in, we go, oh, well, Ben couldn't make it, but here's his representative. Then you pop out of the engine of the Harley or something, by the
Ben Stiller
way, which is probably the way we would do it if I was there. Yes. Because I'm never going to actually, I'm not, I am not.
Sean Clements
The insurance and stuff would be a nightmare, you know what I mean? Unless you just said, hey, it man.
Ben Stiller
No, no, no, I got it.
Sean Clements
I live covering it.
Ben Stiller
I don't, wouldn't, not for this project. I, you know, probably any other project. This is just about this, your life, you know what I mean? I'm just not the tease, you know what I mean? I, I, I've never worn a squirrel suit, you know, publicly.
Sean Clements
Yeah, but what is a life, you know, like, if you're not seizing every moment.
Ben Stiller
Right? But I've also gotten to the point in my life at this point, you know, where I want to appreciate, like, I appreciate the days on earth make the most out.
Sean Clements
Pack as much in as you can. London film shoot and the squirrel suit, right?
Ben Stiller
Or the, but the squirrel goes bad, you know, which is, you know, because those aren't, you know, look, that's a very dangerous thing to do. Like, it could have the opposite effect. Imagine if it, like if some horrible thing happened and I fell.
Sean Clements
The whole news is, Can I, can I just. The red carpet was even extremely red because someone exploded on it. You know, either your stuntman or you.
Ryan Stanger
I want someone just to offer this perspective for the movie. I don't think that's bad.
Sean Clements
Okay, we gotta see this, right?
Ben Stiller
There's no bad.
Ryan Stanger
I think he was willing, he was willing to get vaporized on the carpet for this movie. And it's streaming right now in my home.
Sean Clements
Well, and Ben, I don't want to make you blush. You have a lot of fans who would want to pay their respects and do some sort of Tribute. And so to ignore the film wholesale after, you know, it was the final act and they'd be able to see
Ryan Stanger
the messages you were sending in the movie that this was your intention all along.
Ben Stiller
Right. I mean, you know, that's a valid thing. And, you know, I, I might actually. Yeah, I, I, yeah. If I died, if this was the last movie I made, I would be happy that this is the last one I made.
Sean Clements
Oh, that's really nice. That's a Paul. Incredible. That's the pull quote.
Ryan Stanger
It's Paul. I don't know.
Ben Stiller
Like, it's Paul Walker.
Sean Clements
Oh, Jesus, Hayes.
Ryan Stanger
It's Wanda. He was happy.
Sean Clements
Well, and now, of course, I have to scold Hayes. Hayes don't know. No, don't say that.
Ryan Stanger
I have.
Sean Clements
Let's actually think about it.
Ryan Stanger
I have a sticker where he talks
Sean Clements
about it where he says, do not
Ryan Stanger
feel sorry for me because I was
Sean Clements
happy if I was going fast. Yeah. Ben said it's just one.
Ryan Stanger
It's one idea. This is one idea. My picture for this conversation is that we come up with multiple ideas. I think that's one.
Sean Clements
This is a brainstorming session. Blue sky, no bad ideas. We've got the squirrel suit onto the Harley thing. Whether it's you and your stunt double, whether it's just you. But at any rate, we've got the version where you live, we've got the version where you don't, but we're covered there. But I would say. Okay, let's also come up with some other things to try to like, you know, and by the way, we've got, we've got to dig to see as well. Right. So there's a couple ways that we're covered.
Ryan Stanger
Okay.
Sean Clements
What else can we do
Ben Stiller
in terms of publicizing the movie or just, just make it.
Danielle Fishel
Sure.
Sean Clements
I wouldn't be too upset if the thing went viral. You know what I mean?
Ryan Stanger
We go insanely viral.
Sean Clements
Would that be bad? No, I actually think that's exactly what you want.
Ben Stiller
Yeah. If I me dying, that's one idea.
Sean Clements
Just the movie.
Ryan Stanger
Ready to move on from the you dying idea. And like, we come up with other idea.
Sean Clements
I mean, I don't want you to get married to that.
Ryan Stanger
We can close the book.
Ben Stiller
Honestly, that's probably like the safest bet for something if you want.
Sean Clements
That's the most viral thing.
Ryan Stanger
Oh, absolutely.
Sean Clements
That's big news.
Ryan Stanger
That's why we started there.
Sean Clements
That's big news.
Ben Stiller
Right. But it sort of limits your. After that, it limits options for me to like, promote it when it goes to.
Sean Clements
Well, there's no even making another one afterwards. Might be in protest. If it goes viral enough, I think we're going to want to seize on that opportunity. You know, this is a doorway that we're stepping through, but, you know.
Ben Stiller
Yeah, but, like, on the next one, to be like, oh, Ben's not in it, because remember what happened? And then you could recycle it again.
Sean Clements
We do, yeah. And we've got other footage that we took that we could kind of like. Or we could put your face on Greg Fitzpatrick's body. Simmons, that's a different guy.
Ryan Stanger
He'd be amazing, by the way.
Ben Stiller
I had the same thought, by the way.
Ryan Stanger
The stunt guys are not, like, getting their off for the most part.
Sean Clements
Ben talking. He'd be happy to.
Kalpen (Kal Penn)
What?
Ben Stiller
No, I'd be happy to have my face on Greg Fitzpatrick's body for the rest of.
Ryan Stanger
Okay, that's the quote now.
Sean Clements
Guy's smoking hot, huh?
Ben Stiller
He's got. He's ripped. He's ripped. He's got good pecs, got good shoulders, you know?
Sean Clements
Okay, this guy's bicep went viral. Can I need to think. To go as viral as your bicep? You're talking about Greg's. No. Here we go again. Just like last episode. No, Ben, you're ripped.
Ryan Stanger
We should put his face on your body.
Sean Clements
Greg's a. You're strong. Every time.
Ben Stiller
I'm Jewish. All right. I want to go there.
Sean Clements
All right, all right.
Ben Stiller
I don't even know why.
Sean Clements
If we could use that, you know, Fitzpatrick isn't Jewish.
Ryan Stanger
That's so crazy. I feel like I could see other. Other guys. I feel like I could spot him like that. Greg Fitzpatrick is not Jewish.
Ben Stiller
Okay.
Sean Clements
Was he an Italian guy?
Ryan Stanger
Can I toss something out there, please?
Ben Stiller
Yes.
Ryan Stanger
Ben, I noticed during the NBA finals, you were able to sneak a camera into the arena and. And. And essentially bootleg the entire series. What if, as part of the promotion for the Dink, we had that you managed behind the scenes at the arena to get into the Knicks cheating room? We know. We know they cheated. Everyone knows they cheated. The question. You can't just win. The question is how it happened in the cheating room. You were there as they're planning everything in the book, obviously dosing each other,
Sean Clements
some kind of dastardly with all manner of cocktails. Oh, scandals, seduction.
Ryan Stanger
All these seduction games that they're planning.
Sean Clements
Blood doping. Yes. Was. Who was. Whose job was it to seduce Commissioner Silver or perhaps the refs? You know, I. I think that I wasn't with you at first, and now that I picture it. I go, oh, that's actually a really good idea.
Ryan Stanger
And we put out there that the footage that you got from the cheating
Sean Clements
room is in the.
Ryan Stanger
In the Dink.
Sean Clements
It's in the movie.
Ben Stiller
Okay. All right, so where do I. Where I started with this premise? First of all, I. I'm getting the feeling you guys aren't big basketball fans because you. You.
Ryan Stanger
I cannot tolerate the cheating.
Sean Clements
I. I used to like it until sort of the finals this year. I said, enough, enough. There's the freaking WWE in there. It's all scripted.
Ben Stiller
No, there was a lot of cheating.
Sean Clements
Ref got the script.
Ben Stiller
There was some dirty play. I wouldn't say it was on the mix part. You want to go there? I mean, you take a look at some of those plays. There were a couple of plays there, you know, that did not get called. A couple of fouls on Wemby. Let's just say it out loud.
Ryan Stanger
I.
Sean Clements
That.
Ben Stiller
I believe.
Sean Clements
I believe they actually asked him about that, and he said it was an accident.
Ben Stiller
Okay.
Sean Clements
I believe they actually asked him.
Ben Stiller
I. So there's no such thing as a cheating room. I. I. And. And the Dink crossover part of it doesn't even. I don't even understand that the footage
Sean Clements
would be in the film, Ben.
Ben Stiller
But that doesn't make sense. What film.
Ryan Stanger
And the arena is.
Sean Clements
By the time they finish watching every
Ryan Stanger
room at msg, you're gonna make them
Sean Clements
watch it multiple times.
Ryan Stanger
There's no cheating room like the numbers,
Sean Clements
because they go, I didn't see a cheating room in this, but Ben said so. Then they go back through and back through. Oh, it must be this.
Ryan Stanger
It's not in every copy maybe either.
Ben Stiller
Okay, well, here.
Sean Clements
Smart.
Ben Stiller
Here's a question I have regarding the NBA Finals, though this is totally off topic and has nothing to do with the Dink, but what was Jeremy Piven doing sitting in the. In the front row rooting for the San Antonio spurs at one of the finals games? You. You guys know him, right?
Sean Clements
That was Ari Gold.
Ben Stiller
Oh. Oh, he was in character.
Sean Clements
Yes.
Ben Stiller
Okay.
Sean Clements
Yes. And that's. And it's not unrelated to the Dink, of course, because Doug Allen is Hollywood's preeminent pickleball enthusiast.
Ben Stiller
Okay?
Ryan Stanger
So I think this is good. Beef. Beef. This is good.
Sean Clements
So it's like you're mad at Jeremy, right, Ari. Doug's mad at us,
Ben Stiller
but I'm not even this. I'm not even mad as me. I'm mad in characters. My character, the doctor from the Dink.
Ryan Stanger
Oh, that's really good.
Sean Clements
Yes.
Ryan Stanger
Yeah, he Has a problem with Ari Gold. A for now, more famous character for right this minute today, as we speak
Sean Clements
today, prior to the release.
Ben Stiller
Right. Which I think this character. My character, the Doctor is going to be. Is going to. Has a potential. What do they call a breakout. A breakout character.
Sean Clements
I think this could. I think this could be a breakout role that launches you into the stratosphere.
Ben Stiller
That's what I'm hoping. That's what I'm hoping that it sort of re. Imagines, you know, people's perception of me as like, oh, you know, just walk
Sean Clements
in, they go, I know what Ben Stiller does. And they go, I didn't know he had it like that.
Ben Stiller
Exactly. Exactly. Whoa. Like, what just happened?
Sean Clements
Okay. Yeah, this is me. It's watching my wife. Honey, I need a second. I actually need a second.
Ryan Stanger
Honey, Honey, please.
Sean Clements
Honey, stop.
Ryan Stanger
Honey, I asked for one second.
Sean Clements
Not now. Later
Ben Stiller
on a lot of men, a lot of.
Ryan Stanger
And I guess a lot of marriage. And the wife, too. Yeah. Because she will.
Sean Clements
Something happened for her where she is ready to go. Having seen those doctor scenes.
Ryan Stanger
Yeah.
Ben Stiller
I think, well, you know, they're racy. The scenes are a little racy.
Sean Clements
There's some.
Ben Stiller
They go places.
Sean Clements
Adult content.
Ben Stiller
Yeah. My character has, like, an interesting inner life that we don't know about. It's interesting because he's like, what I liked about the characters. Like a lot of doctors, off the bat, you go, oh, they're a doctor, a serious person. You know, I trust an inherent trust that you put in a doctor because. Because. Because there's two letters in front of their name. Doctor.
Ryan Stanger
Right. Yes.
Sean Clements
So then we've just decided. Okay. That means you can't question them at all.
Ben Stiller
Right.
Sean Clements
The smartest guy in the room.
Ben Stiller
Yeah. Because I have Dr. In front of, like, what if I. My name was, you know, Drake, you know.
Ryan Stanger
Right.
Sean Clements
That. If it was. But, like, really still is here.
Ben Stiller
Right.
Sean Clements
Dr. Stands for like, don't reconsider whether or not I. You should trust them. Or, like, because it's, you know, I.
Ryan Stanger
Or I can be useful to have in front of my name for do Resuscitate.
Ben Stiller
Ah.
Ryan Stanger
People really seem to be getting this confused.
Ben Stiller
I love that instead of dnr, it's
Ryan Stanger
like, I can kind of hear you right. When you're deciding whether or not to resuscitate me.
Ben Stiller
Yeah.
Ryan Stanger
Let me just say it right now. Resuscitate me.
Sean Clements
Go ahead and hit me with the old resuscitate, please.
Ryan Stanger
I can hear you. I can hear you. I can hear you Weighing the pros and cons. Yeah.
Sean Clements
Can we see? Did they write it on his license? Let me go look. And it's like, just go ahead and resuscitate me.
Ryan Stanger
It's like, I'm tired right now, so I can't really say it for myself. But yeah, when it happens again. Yes.
Sean Clements
Let's get it out on the show right now. It's a doctor over here. Do resuscitate me.
Ben Stiller
You're saying that now with your sunglasses and your, you know, trucker cap and your headphones and your.
Ryan Stanger
I must picture them saying that next
Sean Clements
time I go down soaked in irony.
Ben Stiller
Yeah.
Ryan Stanger
Oh, he didn't really mean it. He was playing a character.
Ben Stiller
Guys, see, if my name was Ick and I just called myself or Dr. Ick. Yeah. Or my name was Drick and I changed my name to Dr. Ick, all of a sudden people would trust me more. And so that. Anyway, getting back to what I was talking about, my character, like, I trust you trust this character because he's a doctor. But then it turns out, oh, he's like really kind of like he's got some weird, perverse.
Sean Clements
He has. He has a whole internal life. He has a life outside the doctor's office. Here he's doing his job, but at home he has to cope with the things that every human being does. And he's a true three dimensional person. For me, he steps right out of the screen.
Ben Stiller
Yes.
Sean Clements
Move the scenes over. And he just walks in, Walks into your room.
Ben Stiller
He's in his own movie. And I think it's like, that's a movie I want to see. Personally, as an actor playing that guy.
Ryan Stanger
I feel a different movie.
Ben Stiller
Yeah, different movie, but like. Yeah. Or maybe another additional movie. But basically for me, that was what drew me to the character was like, oh, you know, I think I. I thought I knew what a doctor was, but really a doctor is. It is a human being, a three dimensional human being that I don't really know about. Just because they have the doctor in front of their name.
Sean Clements
Do reevaluate.
Ben Stiller
Right.
Ryan Stanger
Challenges your assumptions. Can I tell you a time that happened to me, Ben? Last time you were on the show, we talked about you helping us book Adam Scott. Yeah, we. We did book. Book him.
Danielle Fishel
Long road.
Ryan Stanger
Yes. I don't.
Sean Clements
Couldn't draw a straight line to you
Ryan Stanger
causing it, but could have happened a little faster. That's fine. I understand now what was going on here. I thought you just like, couldn't be bothered, like, maybe want to see us fail. I get it now. You were trying to warn us.
Sean Clements
You were Protecting us. And, And I don't think we understood at the time. I think we saw his on camera Persona, which is very manicured.
Ryan Stanger
Oh, yeah.
Kalpen (Kal Penn)
And
Ryan Stanger
not violent.
Sean Clements
When we were physically in the room, I said, I owe Ben an apology.
Ryan Stanger
Fucking nightmare.
Sean Clements
Because I've been dragging your name up and down Main street after that.
Ryan Stanger
Yeah, we said a lot of stuff last episode. We said some stuff about malignant narcissist.
Ben Stiller
Yeah. You know, Adam is, you know, Adam's a complicated, you know, complicated guy.
Sean Clements
Complicated guy.
Ben Stiller
Yeah. I worked with him for, I say, like, a good four years straight on
Ryan Stanger
the first severance, what it felt like. Honest. Honestly.
Ben Stiller
Yeah.
Ryan Stanger
I cannot imagine for you, Ben, because you were to be standing here, right, like, today. Jesus Christ.
Ben Stiller
Yeah, it was, you know, like, I, I. Because I also like people. I have heard sometimes people say, like, I can be a lot too, you know, But I think that, like.
Sean Clements
Oh, Ben,
Ben Stiller
I've heard it, you know, I've heard it from people in my, you know, people who are willing to be honest with me in my. By the way, it's hard when you have a circle and the circle doesn't want to. You know what I mean? People are. Because the circle depends on the. The center of the circle.
Ryan Stanger
That is so hard. Ben. Ben.
Sean Clements
Parasitic relationship.
Ryan Stanger
Incredibly difficult for you to go through that. Right. So I just want to affirm what you're saying. You are 100% correct.
Sean Clements
Let me sum it up.
Ryan Stanger
That is really hard. And you shouldn't have to go through that alone.
Sean Clements
Let me sum it up, Ben. To everything you just said. Yes.
Ben Stiller
Thank you. Okay. That. Because a lot of times in, out of context, people don't get it or even know what a circle is. You know what I mean? Like, they're like, oh, what's the state?
Sean Clements
Everyone's so dumb except for you.
Ryan Stanger
Fake.
Ben Stiller
Right. Fake. And. And also not interested or just like, oh, I've got my life. I don't care about your life.
Sean Clements
Interested is interesting. Interested is interesting.
Ryan Stanger
Bored people are boring people.
Ben Stiller
Right, Exactly.
Sean Clements
Is interesting. Yes.
Ben Stiller
For me to then know, you know. Anyway, be grateful that I have within my circle people who are willing to be honest with me, you know.
Ryan Stanger
A few straight shooters. Yes.
Ben Stiller
Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
A couple.
Ben Stiller
Yes.
Sean Clements
So valuable.
Ryan Stanger
Yeah.
Ben Stiller
Right. I've been told, you know, by those few straight shooters, you know, what that experience is. But working with Adam, you know, and I'm glad we can talk about it here after you've now experienced it, because I don't ever want to say anything.
Sean Clements
Yeah.
Ben Stiller
Yeah.
Ryan Stanger
And we couldn't really understand it just from You.
Sean Clements
I think if you had told me, I would have said, well, that's Ben. But with me, he'll be different.
Ryan Stanger
Right.
Sean Clements
He's gonna pull that on me, Jack. I would have said. And sure enough, he did.
Ben Stiller
Yeah, it's. It's. It's something it took me a little while to understand, just like the depth of, you know, the depth, depravity.
Ryan Stanger
Yeah.
Ben Stiller
And also his lack of interest in anything at all, really.
Sean Clements
No, it's like he's got that Terminator scan revision where he just sees your IMDb star meter number, you know, ticking up or down in front of him. And yes, he looks at. He's always.
Ben Stiller
Yeah, he looks at people, you know, in terms of like. Like stacks of coins.
Sean Clements
Transactional relationship.
Ben Stiller
You're like, what is your. You know, I don't play video games, but you know how you have, like, little.
Ryan Stanger
They have the little likes of coins.
Sean Clements
And by the way, you don't need to play video games. You described it perfectly.
Ben Stiller
Thank you. Thank you.
Sean Clements
Stacks of coins.
Ben Stiller
So, like, for. In Adam's world, I'm a stack of coins. You know, in your. In your world, to him, you're whatever.
Sean Clements
Stack of coins, probably a smaller stack of coins. I can be honest about that right now, today. But what he doesn't understand is it's like they always say, be nice to the people with the smaller stack of coins when you're building your coin stack on the way up, because you might see them again when their stack goes up. And your stack, if you lose part of your stack, it's like, you know, like, that's a saying that you'll hear sometimes, and I think Adam would do well to remember it.
Ben Stiller
Yeah. I'm sorry it didn't go well with him. But, you know, good episode.
Ryan Stanger
We're alive.
Ben Stiller
Yeah. I did an episode for four and a half years, you know, so four and a half year episode of that.
Ryan Stanger
Oh, man.
Sean Clements
We're pros. We make something out of it. But. Yeah, the episode that you. By the way. And you made a few episodes.
Ben Stiller
Yeah. Oh, yeah. No, we made. Yeah, we made 19 episodes of that. That lasted for a long time. Yeah, that's over now.
Ryan Stanger
We're. We're moving on forward. That's.
Sean Clements
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And. And you. You're either winning or learning. You're either winning or learning.
Ben Stiller
Yeah. In life, you mean? Yeah.
Sean Clements
And so dealing with Adam, if that didn't feel like winning, we all learned something.
Ben Stiller
Well, the great thing with Adam and that experience was that I felt like we were able. I did win because it was finally ended. And that was. And the win was like, oh, I survived this. Oh, I never have to deal with this again. Oh, you know, when he makes that funny voice, it's like, oh, that's actually really his voice. You know what I mean?
Ryan Stanger
Yes. Oh, my God.
Sean Clements
It took me so long to get
Ryan Stanger
used to that realization. I was like, when is this going to stop?
Sean Clements
But then should we actually talk? And it's like, not going to happen. No, no, not going to happen. That's interesting. It's. It's. It's interesting to hear how funny he has that.
Ben Stiller
He has ears.
Ryan Stanger
Yeah, yeah. I think he could lose those at this point. Yes.
Sean Clements
Yeah, yeah. You got two of those and one mouth.
Ben Stiller
I got a mouth. I use the mouth a lot. I don't really.
Sean Clements
The math ain't mathing. The mouth is mouthing, but the math ain't mathing. So I think we could. Yeah, we could probably 80, 60 years on old as over there.
Ben Stiller
It's got the hair to cut.
Ryan Stanger
Another s. Great hair. Hot. He's hot.
Sean Clements
Oh, my.
Ben Stiller
By the way, he's incredible.
Sean Clements
He's like a Greg Fitz Fitzpatrick.
Ryan Stanger
Greg Fitzpatrick. Level body and face. Yes.
Sean Clements
Wouldn't mind having my face on his body.
Ryan Stanger
Yes. Also not like the, so to speak, all over every.
Ben Stiller
He's, you know, a good example of like, oh, this is how you build a career in Hollywood. Based on hair.
Sean Clements
Based on completely superficial elements. Specifically hair.
Ben Stiller
Yes. I'm going to come in with hair and then, you know, and then when you take the hair, like, imagine him. Just try to imagine him in a movie or television show where he's as bald. Like, what is that? Right. All of a sudden, the power goes away and you're dealing with, you know, a guy with, you know, two extra ears.
Ryan Stanger
And I think that's his insecurity. And I think that's why he has to come in with that energy where, like, he has to win. He has to always be dominating because I think he understands that dynamic that you're talking about but cannot admit it to himself.
Sean Clements
Speaking of winning, speaking of movies and television shows.
Ben Stiller
But by the way, great actor to work with.
Sean Clements
I love.
Ryan Stanger
Sweet guy.
Sean Clements
A dream.
Ryan Stanger
Yeah, the best.
Sean Clements
An absolute treat. And would total passion kill to work with him again?
Ryan Stanger
Yes.
Ben Stiller
Oh, yeah.
Sean Clements
And would love that. And honestly, would. Yes. Would do anything for literally any. For anything at all.

mobile.com Hollywood handbook but speaking of winning and speaking of movies and TV shows, have you seen Ben the Dink recently won an award and I'm not in it for awards. That's not why I do it. I don't think art should be a competition. I think it actually is an opportunity to express yourself, to connect with other human beings. Hold up a mirror perhaps so you know, best mirror holder. I guess you could get that award, but honestly, it depends who's in the reflection. But we did actually get pretty prestigious award. The Guardian has named us the number one movie in the world.
Ryan Stanger
Wow.
Sean Clements
To stream on TV this week.
Ben Stiller
Wow. Seriously.
Sean Clements
To stream on TV this week. Think about how many movies are on tv.
Ben Stiller
A lot.
Sean Clements
Almost all of them. You know who's under us on the list? Can I tell you sincerely, who's under us on the list? Jurassic Park.
Ben Stiller
Jurassic what?
Ryan Stanger
Yes. Thank you.
Sean Clements
What?
Ben Stiller
Look, look. That doesn't really surprise me, honestly, because it's like a very funny movie. You know, it's. It's sweet. It's got humor in it. It's kind of got. It's not afraid to like make jokes that are a little bit racy.
Sean Clements
You know that before.
Ben Stiller
Yeah, I think the doctor specifically. Doctor specifically. But also like the whole idea of this, you know, Mary Steenbergen and you know, Jake Johnson have this sort of like, you know, like, I don't know, like interesting.
Sean Clements
I don't know.
Ben Stiller
What is it? What is it?
Sean Clements
Still don't know.
Ben Stiller
You don't know what it is.
Sean Clements
Said every day. I said I don't know what this is, but. But Jesus Christ, I'm watching it and I think it actually may end up being the number one movie in the world to stream on tv.
Ben Stiller
Well, so that doesn't surprise me. The Guardian knows what they're talking about.
Sean Clements
Oh yeah.
Ryan Stanger
Well, they're protectors. Their protectors have to give it because they're all like truth to power and like the Snowden crap or whatever. But this time to say, like, all right, this time, like the. The powerful.
Sean Clements
Actually, the machine got it right.
Ryan Stanger
Yeah. I think maybe they might have been on to something the whole time.
Ben Stiller
Every once in a while they get it right, you know. And, you know, if you want to find a movie to stream also, by
Sean Clements
the way, this week.
Ben Stiller
Yeah, yeah, but the term, like, I don't think you stream the date. You know what I mean? Like, it's more than that. Right. It's not like you're streaming it, experiencing it. Like, it's like an immersive experience.
Sean Clements
You climb right in there, don't you?
Ryan Stanger
You Whitewater kayak it.
Ben Stiller
Yeah.
Sean Clements
Wanted to. At one point, we wanted Apple to send everyone like a 8 or 9 foot pickleball to stand inside of and watch through one of the little holes, you know, so that they could really feel like. Like something totally immersive standing inside a giant pickleball with a door, you know?
Ben Stiller
Yeah.
Sean Clements
Why didn't they put your face up to the hole?
Ben Stiller
Why didn't they do that?
Sean Clements
So I don't think they understood what I was saying. And they're very nice, by the way, and they've been very supportive just to
Ryan Stanger
stand up for Sean a little bit and to like, just speaking from a little bit of the outside of this process, I think you could have gotten more involved there, Ben, just in terms
Sean Clements
of drawing a pickleball or when we
Ryan Stanger
think about like the. An EP's role on a movie like this, there are moments when you need to step in.
Sean Clements
I just can't really draw. And so as I was trying to, like, I'll just say it, like, am I an artist?
Ben Stiller
Yes.
Sean Clements
But my messier is not pen and sketch pad, you know, or just to
Ryan Stanger
stand up for my friend a little bit. He can draw. He drew a beautiful big pickleball with a beautiful woman standing inside with incredible attributes.
Sean Clements
You know, there's holes in the pickle ball. So you can see.
Ryan Stanger
You can see. You can see a lot.
Sean Clements
Glimpses. Yes.
Ryan Stanger
They got to be able to see the movie.
Sean Clements
You're getting a sense of.
Ryan Stanger
And so that means that, like, what's going on?
Ben Stiller
I just want to understand the situation, though, because I was unaware of this completely. I just want to understand what happened. You drew a picture.
Sean Clements
Something going on for you physically.
Ben Stiller
Knives had left almost. Burke.
Sean Clements
Okay.
Ben Stiller
You drew a picture. That's what it looked like. A concept art of what this would be almost like, you know, we did it with severance. We did like a cube with severance in Grand Central.
Ryan Stanger
Yes. So you understand how this process works. This was an idea.
Ben Stiller
So the drawing you drew this woman, this beautifully well attributed woman in a pickleball and you sent. Gave it to who? Because I never heard about this. And that's what I'm saying.
Sean Clements
Like just all the. Every female member of the marketing team
Ben Stiller
and they rejected it. They weren't it.
Sean Clements
They have not emailed me essentially, ever again.
Ben Stiller
So this is why I tell you
Ryan Stanger
sometimes it's not waiting for them to say, oh, we approve this or we don't. Sometimes it's you sending an email asking forgiveness, not permission.
Ben Stiller
Sean, this is.
Sean Clements
Go ahead.
Ben Stiller
So many times. And we've been working together on stuff for a few years now.
Sean Clements
Years. Yeah.
Ben Stiller
Yeah. You have to CC me. You have to see.
Ryan Stanger
It is hard to. We have been working on this. It is really hard to see someone on a drawing.
Ben Stiller
Nope. But you have to turn it into an email. You have to.
Ryan Stanger
That is also really hard.
Sean Clements
So what I, What I did was have apps.
Ben Stiller
You can scan things. Like, you could skip the real thing
Sean Clements
and this would have been great. And you're such a technical. You know what I mean? You're a director as well, and you work with all this technology, these machines, you understand, this stuff I hand delivered just slid under the door of the offices of every female marketing staff member at Apple. I'm sure that incredible piece of artwork.
Ben Stiller
Yeah, listen, you know, you got to embrace technology. I made my assistant about, I don't know, whenever it started up, you know, 20 years ago, whatever it was, when emails. Was it 20 years, email 30 years.
Sean Clements
I think it was like, I hate to put a number on.
Ben Stiller
Okay. But I remember when email started, I made my assistant explain to me how it work. Like, how do you do an email? Okay. And I, you know, at the time, it was not easy, it was not simple. It wasn't something everybody knew. But I was like, I need to get ahead of it because I don't want to be left in the dust. And I continue to do it, like with TikTok and, and other, you know, social media things. I make my assistant show me stuff and say, explain to me how does this work? You know, so I can understand it. And then I don't need the assistant or I don't need to slip things under doors and you have to stay. And I'm just giving you this advice
Sean Clements
because I got two assistants right here and they can't make heads or tails of this email. Computer stuff. I don't know.
Ryan Stanger
But what I'm hearing is that, you know, that's the Whole staff, how to write and send an email that says, hey, this is a beautiful drawing.
Sean Clements
Someone worked really hard on this.
Ryan Stanger
You need to turn it into a reality.
Ben Stiller
Right?
Ryan Stanger
Yes.
Ben Stiller
I can't do it if I don't get cc'd. Okay.
Sean Clements
I'm thinking about this.
Ryan Stanger
Maybe you can describe it. Maybe you can describe the drawing in a text.
Sean Clements
This is a joke area. It's maybe a New Yorker cartoon, but it's a modern day professor or teacher. And they. I don't know exactly how it works, but the punchline is CC me after class.
Ben Stiller
I like that.
Sean Clements
You see what I'm saying?
Ryan Stanger
And they all have. No, but it's. The whole class has computer. Everyone in class, they are a computer. Is.
Sean Clements
They are a computer.
Ryan Stanger
Everyone is a computer.
Sean Clements
Or go ahead, what were you gonna say?
Ryan Stanger
I was gonna say everyone is so distracted by the computer that like he, like he can't even get their attention because they're on their computer. So he's saying CC me after class.
Ben Stiller
Oh, right, right, right.
Ryan Stanger
It's so much better that they're all computers.
Ben Stiller
I like that. I like that.
Ryan Stanger
Easier to draw.
Ben Stiller
Yeah. I mean, and it's also interesting because, you know, cc, the term CC actually goes pre computers. Right. Because it see is carbon copy.
Sean Clements
Yeah, yeah.
Ben Stiller
So that used to be when you had a black piece of paper or purple piece of paper you put between another paper physically. And we could have done with your drawing too. Physically. You could have actually carbon copied your drawing if you did not want to use a computer. And give me a carbon copy of the phys. The physical carbon copy of it. Anyway. All that to say it's a great idea. I think that would have been a great stunt. But like us talking about the movie on this podcast I think is as impactful, if not more than the big pickleball. Yeah. Because this is going to go viral in some way. You know, it's always funny to me also like when studio execs say, oh, you should do a viral video, it's like, okay, well you know, I'd love every video to be viral that I, I've been trying. Right, exactly. You never know what's going on.
Sean Clements
I've been trying to do.
Ben Stiller
But I do think there's certain things we've said here and done and this
Sean Clements
you can feel actually something is happening over at Hollywood Handbook and something is going on there.
Ben Stiller
They're, they're building some virality you guys have ever had. But I'm sure this, I just feel like, just even like us talking about this is going to get clipped out. Because they call it being clipped.
Ryan Stanger
Yes. This would be huge.
Sean Clements
The aggregators. Aggregators are going to have a field day with some of these lines.
Ryan Stanger
And we can also wait until, like, some other current event happens is unrelated to this and, like, clip something that you say and, like, post it.
Sean Clements
Yeah. We just got you cold saying, like, I think that's a good thing.
Ben Stiller
Right, Right.
Sean Clements
And then we wait or like, some horrible tragedy and then we just go. And then it's like, again, Stiller responds.
Ben Stiller
Right. I like that, that. That works, you guys. I. For me, it might not be optimal because then I'm put in a weird position.
Sean Clements
Bulletproof, brother.
Ryan Stanger
You're out there, though.
Ben Stiller
I think already what we said, like, the Adam Scott stuff, like, some of that stuff out of context could be really, you know, I, I would click on that. You know, Wait a minute. Shouldn't have ears, like, whoa.
Ryan Stanger
Right?
Sean Clements
Yeah.
Ryan Stanger
Yeah.
Ben Stiller
What does that mean? You know?
Sean Clements
Yeah.
Ryan Stanger
And maybe we get really lucky and his ears, like, get removed in some awesome.
Sean Clements
Something happened. Some kind of accident. You know, honestly, if we got him to do the Harley thing, and then when he took off his motorcycle helmet, it just sheared the ears off with it. The ears came out inside the helmet, you know? Right.
Ben Stiller
Ben Stiller saw it. I had. He knew.
Sean Clements
And then Ben Stiller, Javiers. And then it's like, did he rig the helmet? You know what I mean? Did he. Was. Did he steal the helmet from the Knicks cheating room?
Ryan Stanger
We don't know.
Ben Stiller
Cheating room. There's no cheating.
Ryan Stanger
He feels like he has to say that
Sean Clements
it's pathological.
Ryan Stanger
I mean, it's like, I've never, never been more certain.
Sean Clements
I think there was, but, yeah.
Ben Stiller
Who are you guys? Who are your teams that didn't win the championship this year?
Ryan Stanger
My team. I have a team that I have supported for a while, and it's called SEAL Team six.
Sean Clements
They're the troops. I guess they didn't win the championship this year, in your estimation.
Ben Stiller
That's unfair.
Sean Clements
I'd say there's a long string of victories they've had, but there is actually no championship.
Ryan Stanger
No, but let's give it to a basketball team. No, let's give the NBA championship to a basketball team.
Sean Clements
Yeah, that's.
Ben Stiller
That.
Sean Clements
That'll keep us safe.
Ben Stiller
Well, now you flipped it around, because I, I, I was thinking of, you know, sports teams. Not, not maybe SEAL teams.
Sean Clements
You said, what team do we support? You said, what team do we support?
Ryan Stanger
Is that the problem with our culture?
Kalpen (Kal Penn)
Mm.
Sean Clements
Is that team has just come to me in These, these children's games and just I hope that Somali pirates don't ever overtake your vessel. And you're expecting Jalen Brunson to get in a frog suit and somehow, you know, bring you to safety, kick their ass. Look, this telling you in good physical shape. But yeah, a whole bunch of technical stuff that goes into the, the frog suit element that I'm just not sure he has the training for.
Ben Stiller
Well, no, but if he did, if he chose to kick their ass, whoever, whoever he dealt with,
Ryan Stanger
do you think his dad would then say that Patrick Ewing would have kicked their ass better?
Ben Stiller
Let me tell you something. Patrick Ewing, you really want to go there. Had a team around him at the time. He would have.
Danielle Fishel
Okay.
Ben Stiller
And that was the only if you really. Because we.
Sean Clements
I hope John Starks doesn't hear this. No, I really hope John Starks doesn't hear this man.
Ben Stiller
Houston, he had latro. He had, he had people who came in. But. And then as you know, in 99 he was injured, but, you know, and he had this very bad injury that happened. But, but, but Patrick Ewing is probably will go down as you know. I mean, it's hard to rank the greatest Knicks, but come on. Okay, yeah, I took it there. That's where we're going podcast.
Sean Clements
No, that's, that's great. We can do. We can do something with that.
Ben Stiller
Guys have no interest,
Sean Clements
No interest in ranking the greatest Knicks ever.
Ben Stiller
Well, it's hard to do long podcast.
Ryan Stanger
I want to make sure we have what we have you. We have you getting. We have to dink to see smeared on the red carpet.
Advertiser Voice
We have.
Ryan Stanger
Yes, we have dink to see.
Sean Clements
We have Ben shaped stain on the carpet.
Ryan Stanger
We have the Knicks cheating room footage making it its way into only five copies.
Sean Clements
We've got this sort of, you know, relay. We've got the sort of didink to see two screen experience with the, with the men's group.
Ryan Stanger
Yes, yes.
Ben Stiller
I had another idea for that too. Like we were talking about the Bartenheimer thing.
Sean Clements
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Ryan Stanger
And.
Ben Stiller
And we said it was. We said it was a disy Dinktius.
Ryan Stanger
Is that the name of dinktasy?
Sean Clements
Yeah, but. Oh, well, now I'm liking this.
Ben Stiller
A dink toy, right?
Ryan Stanger
Yes, thank you.
Ben Stiller
That's correct. Here's my, my thing though, since you could watch the dink three times within the Odyssey. What the. A dink dink dink to see A
Ryan Stanger
dink dink dink to see oh, we
Ben Stiller
triple it Dink ding ding to see.
Sean Clements
Yeah. And then Underneath, we'd have like a parenthetical. A parenthetical sort of explaining why we wrote it three times or not, or
Ben Stiller
people just figure it out because, you know, they've watched it three times because everybody's watching it. So, like, they get it, they understand.
Sean Clements
You just feel it. It's just in your bones at that point.
Ben Stiller
I'm just saying just the pitch. A dink, dink, dink to see.
Ryan Stanger
We have the big pickleball, which I think could still.
Sean Clements
I think the big pickleball, even in a limited way. Even if we just got 12 of these things and sent them to giant pickleball people.
Ryan Stanger
Yes.
Ben Stiller
Yeah, a good idea.
Sean Clements
Fully, you know, arrange the pickleball holes in the right.
Ben Stiller
Or like enough like an Austin Powers reverse sort of way.
Sean Clements
I believe so. Yes. We will be implications.
Ryan Stanger
Yes. Because some of these women in the world. My God.
Sean Clements
Good gravy, man.
Ryan Stanger
Some of these women are unbelievable.
Sean Clements
What they've been doing with the women lately. I did not think I would see this in my lifetime.
Ryan Stanger
Have you seen some of these women?
Sean Clements
Can a load of some of this stuff. I don't know if it's AI or what, but if it is, sign me up.
Ryan Stanger
Chat.
Ben Stiller
Speaking of AI, you guys should really jump on that too. Just.
Sean Clements
Thank you. Yes.
Ben Stiller
I mean, just with seeing and the emails, it's the next step.
Sean Clements
It's Hollywood Handbook. It's Hollywood Handbook. And what's Hollywood now? It's AI. We're talking about it, you know.
Ben Stiller
Exactly.
Sean Clements
They're not opening up their checkbook the way they used to to give artists like us opportunities. We're going to have to start making everything with AI.
Ben Stiller
So get your assistants to teach you
Ryan Stanger
AI and talk about. I mean, like, you know, this doesn't release for a couple days. You talk about, like, putting your head on Greg Fitzpatrick's body, for example. That's like. That is something that the AI we'd be able to do is very eager to do.
Sean Clements
I put Adam's hair on my head.
Kalpen (Kal Penn)
Yeah.
Sean Clements
My ears on his. So he can finally listen to something, Right?
Ben Stiller
Well, yeah. But you know what? All the AI in the world's not going to make Adam Scott listen to anybody other than his own voice, which I can barely.
Sean Clements
Bye.
Ben Stiller
Yeah.

This episode of Hollywood Handbook features hosts Sean Clements and Ryan Stanger in conversation with A-list guest Ben Stiller. The group dives deep into the intricacies of movie promotion, comedic industry in-jokes, the evolving definition of “movies,” and behind-the-scenes tales related to the making and marketing of “The Dink.” The episode is a freewheeling, absurdist discussion about Hollywood, promotion stunts, celebrity personas, and the fuzzy line between art, virality, and absurdity.
This episode delivers the classic Hollywood Handbook cocktail of industry-insider riffing, self-satirization, and outright silliness—anchored by Ben Stiller’s deadpan humor and willingness to play along. Major topics range from Hollywood’s shifting definitions and absurd marketing schemes to deep-cut jokes about celebrity personas and the future of entertainment technology. Listeners get both candid, comedic insight and a mockery of everything showbiz takes seriously. The banter is fast-paced, loaded with meta-humor, and never loses its insider/outsider tone.
