Jason & Paul preview the summer movies they're excited about, discuss the new slate of Fast & Furious TV shows in development, and recommend all the earworms on their spring music playlists. But first, Paul responds to all your corrections & omissions on last week's Drop Zone episode, including a bizarre Gary Busey line-reading and a "White Men Can't Jump" joke we somehow overlooked. And as always, at the end of the episode Paul announces next week's new movie! Let me tell you something, people. When you have a bad hire at your job, it wrecks everything, okay? It costs you time, it costs you money, it costs you momentum. So that's where LinkedIn's new hiring pro can screen candidates for you. So instead of sorting through applicants, you spend time talking to the right ones. Get by posting your job for free@LinkedIn.com valuable terms and conditions apply. White men and women can jump the weird way that Gary Busey calls emergency services. And Jason and I live streaming in your house. All this and more on a brand new how did this get Made? Last Looks Hit the theme. Last looks. Paul and jason. Last looks.
June Diane Raphael
Just do your thing.
Paul Scheer
Last looks. Hello, all my loosey busies. It's me, Paul Scheer, your host and skydiving instructor. And welcome to how did this Get Made? Last Looks. Oh, I love being back here with you because this is your chance to get your voice heard on all the issues that you have with Drop Zone, a movie the Discord user hotline thinks should have had the tagline Drop Zone. Parachute first, ask questions later. Thank you, Hotline, for that alt tagline. Now, a big shout out to the Midwest Shakes for today's opening theme song. I loved it. You guys rule. Remember, if you want me to thank you like I just did for Hotline and Midwest Shakes, it's very easy. You just have to give us something. And that could be your talent, your time, or a combination of both. Because if you have an alt movie tagline, you could submit it to us on our Discord at Discord GG hdtgm. Let's see, let's see. What you got. And if you are more inclined to write a song, well, we would love to hear it. As long as they are short, 15 to 20 seconds is best. But it's very easy to submit. All you have to do is go to our homepage, HDTeaching, click the Submit a song button, and you're done. It's there and we will pick it, we will use it. We want to use it. Just like I said, keep them short. And I would be thanking you. I'll be saying your name right here at the top of the episode. That's prime real estate. All right, coming up on today's episode, we will be hearing all of your corrections and omissions on Dropzone. And believe me, there are a lot. Plus, Jason will join me for a super sized just chat where we break down the summer movies that we're really excited about. Plus, I revealed to Jason the four new Fast and Furious TV shows in development, or what we know of those four shows, as well as Jason and I talking music. That's right. We have so much to get off our chest. I cannot wait for you to listen to us chat. Now, as always, I will reveal the movie for next week's episode, but there's a couple things I need to tell you about. Uh, as you all are aware, Avril Halle passed earlier this year and we have been trying to find a way to properly memorialize her beyond just talking about how amazing she was to the show. We wanted to create something to actually give back. So we created this shirt based on a design used at her Memorial where 100% of the proceeds from this shirt, sticker, mug, whatever you want to do with this design will go to the Breast Cancer Research foundation in Avril's memory. All you have to do to purchase this is go to our merch link on hdtgm.com and like I said, the design is absolutely beautiful and you can put it on anything at all. It's a beautiful way to remember her, but also to give back to such an amazing organization. June is in Mating Season, which is out now on Netflix. I believe Jason makes a little bit of a guest appearance in that show as well. It's a brand new show from our friend Nick Kroll. It's hilarious and, and it is, you know, for fans of Big Mouth, you are going to absolutely love this show. It is a plus. Plus, Zach woods is in it. Sabrina Jaleel's is in it. It's really, really great. Also, if you're on Netflix, check out Black Monday June. Myself so many People in Black Monday so happy that it's out there and people are finally catching it for the very first time. Don Cheadle, Andrew Reynolds, Regina hall, me, Casey Wilson, so many great people. Now our next live show at Largo in LA is sold out. But don't worry, we've announced the movie online and if you want to come out and see Jason and I in Los Angeles, you still can do that. On June 26, Dinosaur Improv will be at Largo. Now the big news is this Del Close marathon is coming up.
Jason Mantzoukas
Now.
Paul Scheer
What is the Del Close marathon? Well, Jason and I started a improvising at UCB Theater back in the day. This is where our home base and we are doing a slew of shows and guess what? You may be like, papa, I don't live in New York. Don't worry about it. These shows are also live streaming and we are doing a 10 year anniversary of One Man's trash. That's right, the Chris gether dumpster show. 10 year anniversary. Okay. We also are going to be performing with Dinosaur out there. We're going to match game 76 bringing back this classic show that if you don't know about match game 76 is a show that I've been doing forever, since the very first Del Close marathon. It is a bunch of insane people on stage. Well, I would say it's a bunch of hilarious people on stage in one of the most insane shows ever. And I actually have stopped the live stream for that. But make sure if you're in New York, you come check out Match Game as well as the George Lucas talk show soundtrack which Jason is in there. There's an ascat. There's so many shows. They are all listed on my website, paulshear.com but I cannot wait to see you all out there in New York. Jason and I are pumped. All right now that is all the plugs that I got for you today. So let's get into it. Last week we talked at length about Drop Zone. Well, we had questions and we might have even missed a few things. Here is your chance to set us straight. Fact check us if you will. It is now time for corrections and omission.
June Diane Raphael
Setting them to fiction in a world of contradictions. Digging up the ugly truth is our stated mission. Sorting through the steaming pile of robbery suppositions pieces to the bar we like to call corrections and omissions.
Paul Scheer
Thank you, Casey Campbell for that theme song. Let's start with some phone calls. First up, Sylvia from home of the Drop Zone. That's right. She's calling from Washington, D.C. hi, Paul and Jason.
Sylvia
This is Sylvia calling with an omission from Drop Zone. So I'm not going to talk about the ridiculous idea of skydiving in D.C. or that the drop zone that they identify of Potomac park is actually in Virginia. Instead, I want to focus on the dead bodies. The reason that the authorities think that the hijackers didn't make it off the plane is because they found extra unidentified bodies. Where did those bodies come from? Who are they? Did the hijackers kill random people? Did they rob a morgue? When did they have the opportunity to place dead bodies in the plane, which would then be seen as the bodies of the hijackers? There's just no explanation or discussion given to this, and it seems like a large hole. All right, love you guys. Thanks. Bye.
Paul Scheer
Well, Sylvia, good question. Here's my question. Back to you. Hmm. Okay. So they found extra bodies. Well, I guess they may have just found the right amount of bodies, but that also wouldn't account for the fact that they didn't find the body of the prisoner. They only found his thumb. And then I would go one step further and say that the amount of time that it would take to actually find and identify all the bodies would be so long. That wouldn't be just like something that you do very quickly off a manifest, like an hour afterwards, because it seemed like people were getting sucked out of the plane. Yes, there are issues here. I think that they just believe that the high. Look, you're right, but I believe what they're saying is the hijackers plan was interrupted. They weren't thinking about the skydiving element. They were like, oh, they're gonna hijack a plane and land it. Little did they know they were gonna hijack a plane and then skydive out of it. I mean, clearly these people have never heard of DB Cooper, so I think that is the rub. But to your point, I don't know if they put extra bodies in, but because they've lost a lot of bodies, too. And how would they know which one they lost because they were just passengers? It makes no sense. Sylvia, thank you for bringing this up. And I love that Potomac park is in Virginia. Next caller, Greg from Montana.
Jason Mantzoukas
April, as a firefighter and paramedic, I thought I'd address a couple of things that came up in the episode of Drop Zone. You guys are right. Totally not acceptable that EMS wasn't the first on scene when that guy's shoot failed. I mean, that's. That's exactly what's going to happen in the real world. EMS is going to be the first ones on scene. They're probably going to be the first one to draw them out of the water. None of that was realistic. Second of all, hey, I hate to tell you this, but you're not riding at the back of my ambulance unless your kid is being transported. And your presence will help. That's about the only reason you're going to be in the back of my ambulance with me. I don't care if they're family. I don't care if they're your best friend or whatever. I got stuff to do, and you're in my way. You need to get out. That's a movie trope that needs to go away. And lastly, I'll say that I buy the bell ceremony that they have for their fallen comrade. You know, people who do dangerous work, there's a kinship, and you honor the people who pass doing that dangerous work, even if you don't know them. Sometimes, even if you don't like them, you honor their passing. So, you know, that kind of a ceremony. Yeah, I buy that. That totally makes sense. So, I don't know. Hope it helps. Great episode. Love you guys.
Paul Scheer
Greg, you sound like a straight fucking shooter. And I appreciate this call. And I'm not saying, number one, just wanted to make sure that, you know, I'm not saying that people should ride in the back of an ambulance. I definitely am not. Do your job. But the anger at which that man was yelling at these people who were clearly grieving, I mean, look, I'll go one step further, Greg, and I'll say he shouldn't have let him that far into the ambulance. I don't think you would have done that. I. I had no problem with them being kicked out, but the level of anger seemed to be too large. And then. I know. I don't know if we made fun of the bell ringing. I just felt like, I mean, look, that's very much a traditional thing. I just felt like it wasn't really a ceremony. Just kind of felt like, I don't know if people were there mourning. It kind of felt like, oh, shit, right? Ring the bell. Like, I get that in different scenarios. It just felt like that was in the middle of a night, a night out. But thank you, Greg. I appreciate all that you do, and thank you for your service. All right, next up, Jake from Peoria, Illinois.
Jake
Hi, this is Jake. This question is about the character of Sally, the young guy that's part of the group. Why do you think they didn't just have him die, you know, when he had that awful accident, I. I assumed that he was going to die and they would all feel like the stakes were getting higher. I was really surprised. They, like. I don't really understand why they had him live unless it was supposedly for a sequel or something. Anyway, that's my question. And then with regards to extreme movies, you should cover on the show vertical limit. Chris O', Donnell, Scott Glenn rock climbing movie from 2000 is just. It's a classic.
Paul Scheer
Yeah. I mean, why are we doing that? It's not a kids movie. We don't need it to, like, come back in a sequel. I think that whenever you kill a main character, it's hard to kind of, like, laugh at the end. Like, that final moment in the movie is like, ha, ha. Yeah. You know, So I feel like they couldn't really do it. And it's a cheat. Absolutely. All the good guys have to win, you know, And I think that when you go to, like, a movie like Speed and Jeff Daniels eats it in the beginning, you know, you can have that, which is like, oh, we barely knew him. But you can't, like, live a whole movie and then kill somebody. And this time in action movies, you know, I mean, maybe Predator is the example that kind of transcends it, but that's even earlier. I think you're right. It's a cheat. He should have died. It would have been better. And I love this recommendation of Vertical Limit. We're getting a lot of great recommendations. Scott is going through them right now. And let's go to Matt from Richmond, Virginia.
Jason Mantzoukas
Hey, Jason, Paul and June, this is Matt. Just finished listening to the Drop Zone episode, and I wanted to bring something to everyone's attention as a correction. The reason why Wesley Snipes doesn't have his car midway through is because he sold it. Because Yancy Butler's character says she needs, like, $15,000 in her own plane. And so that's why he holds up that wad of cash when she's like, what happened to your car? But anyway, great show. Great work. Keep it up. And thanks.
Paul Scheer
Okay. It makes sense. This movie works. Thank you, Matt, for listening very closely. Did not understand that. And I feel like it could have probably used another. Another line in there to just. Well, I guess not. Who cares? I just thought he had that money. I thought, like, he got that from the government, but he wasn't working for the government. So, of course, Matt, you watched the movie the right way. Thank you, Matt. And again, it's probably because you are connected to this as a resident of Richmond, Virginia. All right, next up is Keytren.
Keytren
Hi, Paul. Just wanted to give a call for the first time, even though I've been listening to y' all for however long y' all have been doing it, I just wanted to give a little context about the movie Drop Zone, which I just listened to. I actually was sort of tangentially involved in the kind of skydiver subculture because in high school I was best friends with a fourth generation skydiver. And so I would go to the drop zone with her and her family. And here's what I'll say. As someone who spent a lot of time on drop zones, I've never been skydiving. It's not really something where you want to see how the sausage is made. You know, it's kind of a lawless culture and becomes even more lawless once that beer sign gets flipped on at 5 o'. Clock. And those are the same people packing your parachute the next morning. So, yes, there is kind of an entire subculture. There are teams, there are sports, and everyone has a little bit of a death wish. All the respect in the world to that entire lifestyle. Met a lot of cool people, but it's. It's not for me. So, yeah, that's a little bit about the skydiving subculture that I found myself a part of.
Paul Scheer
Whoa. Wow. Whoa. Yow. This you. Whoa. You blew my mind. I have nothing to say but wow. I love this. I love the Sons of Anarchy nature of this, of this world. I kind of wanted more of that. I feel like we got that in the Gary Busey world, but I don't feel like we really got that. I mean, I guess it was a little bit here and there. I love it. I'm in. You killed it. I have nothing to say more than like, thank you for sharing. So cool. I want to hear more about it, honestly. And I also just want to say thank you to everybody who is using our brand new voice mailbox. You all sound great. This is the new thing that we've been doing. All right, it is now time to hear from our discord. Brownie writes to answer June's question about whether skydiving has competitions. Yes, they do. We have world championships every two years and nationals yearly. We have competitions for formation, speed, our artistic and accuracy, to name a few. Also, moving around in free for all is very easy. And yes, you can speed up and slow down to catch up with others within reason. And for the formation diving, we have a camera flyer that jumps with us to film how the formation appears from above ground to air. Judging was on its way out in the 80s. Thank you, Brownie. All right. I believe that that was the one part of the movie that I had no problem believing. DrGuts10:03 writes at the end of the film, Wesley Snipes knows the building that Garrett Busey and his team are going to attack. So why not alert the people in the building ahead of time and have them bring extra security? Well, Dr. Guts, because Wesley was not working for any government organization. He was just a layperson. And I guess, you know, you can't call in those calls if you're a layperson. I mean, also, I think he, you know, he. Look, this guy wants the adrenaline rush. He wants to be able to take down this crime syndicate by himself. He doesn't need backup. All it needs is his backpack with his shoot in it. Anyway, John Steele. What do you got? John Steele writes, when Yancy Butler sneaks on the bad guys plane, there is a sticker next to her that reads white men and women can jump. For people that get the Wesley Snipes reference. This is pretty great for other people like My wife, who has no idea what it means. It can be a little strange. And John still did include a image of that. I did not see that in the movie. Oh, my gosh. And John still continues to point out that also Selly, the young mechanic who gets his shoot sabotage, was played by Corey Nemec, who played the titular role in Parker Lewis Can't Lose. Oh, I love Parker Lewis Can't Lose. I didn't recognize him. I'm still just obsessed with that bumper sticker. Should we make that like a shirt? White men and women can jump. I think that that is kind of funny. Let me know. Let us know. In the discord, we haven't been making too many new shirts lately besides our tribute Avril shirt. We. Maybe we need some more. We've been talking about them, but we just have not executed any of them. Amani Taylor 7280 writes, I think the two female leads were supposed to look alike to show the bad guys were trying to replace Yancy Butler with a similar type of. That also explains why the female villain died in the copy machine to show the battle between copy versus the original. Oh, damn. Oh, no, you didn't. No, you didn't. Imani. Imani. Bringing the fucking heat. Okay. Wow. Yes. Love this. Oh, man. You know what I mean? I want to. I'm gonna hold onto it. We have one more comment. Sean McBee writes, right after Busey flies the guy into the power lines, he says the following cool move. See that 911 is not gonna work for him. What you just saw there can happen
Jason Mantzoukas
to any one of you.
Paul Scheer
Now, I thought hearing a hijacker speak the words now 911 isn't gonna work for him. About a now dead hijacker was so jarring that I went back twice to make sure I heard it right. Then I turn on the subtitles and realize that Garrett Busey is trying to say 91 1, but he says it as 9 11, and wow, I can't believe I missed that.
June Diane Raphael
Whoa.
Paul Scheer
Oh, my God. Well, you know what, Sean McBee, you kind of proved me right and wrong here, because I was just about to give this week's winner to Imani, but then you come in with this clip about 9 11. And then I'm like, well, wait a second. Have we forgotten about Kietrin? Or what about Greg from Montana? It's so many people. Sylvia, who brought up the missing bodies? I mean, this has been an all star week. But I have to say, I gotta say, I'm gonna go with my gut. Amani Taylor 7280, you are our winner. And since you watched Drop Zone, you know that the characters had cool skydiver nicknames like Swoop and Sully and Deuce and Deputy Dog, just to name a few. Well, your winner's prize is that I will be giving you your official skydiving nickname. Okay, so, Imani, your skydiving nickname will be Xerox. Oh, I like it. Yo, what's up, Xerox? I like this. I feel like this is a good look for you, Imani. All right, so welcome to the game, Xerox. You are this week's winner. And for all of you listening who might be jealous I didn't give you a cool skydiving nickname, you can try your luck next episode by submitting your corrections and omissions on our discord or by leaving us a voicemail@speakpipe.com HDTGM now, just before Jason pops on to chat with me, I have to remind you to tune into our classic episodes. We re release those every Tuesday. This week's classic episode was the Wild Wild west with guest Kevin Smith. And next week's will be the 2003 film Daredevil with special guest Ed Brubaker. So keep on checking out all of our replays of classic episodes every Tuesday. And now, without any further ado, it is time to welcome Jason for a little just chat. Bears in love. Play us in. Jason. We are gearing up for summer. Summer plans are on the horizon. Summer movies are coming out. Very excited about that.
June Diane Raphael
What are you. What are you most excited for? Summer movie. Like, summer movie blockbuster. What do we got this year? We've got a couple of big ones.
Paul Scheer
I gotta tell you, the one that I'm most intrigued by, and I don't even know if you know, because. Yes. The Odyssey. 100% sure. Spider Man. Brand new day. Absolutely. You know, Grogu, I'm right.
June Diane Raphael
Avengers, Doomsday.
Paul Scheer
Oh, that's. Is that Christmas? I think.
June Diane Raphael
Oh, is that Christmas?
Paul Scheer
Yeah, yeah. Okay, okay.
June Diane Raphael
Forget it, Forget it.
Paul Scheer
Here's the one that I'm excited about. Have you heard about the Sex Purge movie?
June Diane Raphael
No.
Paul Scheer
So, okay, so the idea is that you can't have sex out of marriage in this society. I have heard about this. Okay. One night.
June Diane Raphael
It's like a rom com. A rom com? Yes, yes, yes.
Paul Scheer
And I was like, this is. There was something about it where I was like, oh, I just love this idea as a rom com because it kind of feels a little bit like before sunrise or before sunset. It's gonna be like A. It's not. There's no horror element to it, but it's a world in which you can only have one night stands on this one night.
June Diane Raphael
And I think, is it only for single people or is that it? Or something like that.
Paul Scheer
I think you can't have sex out of wedlock except for one night. Or maybe that's what I think it is. Yeah.
June Diane Raphael
Great setup.
Paul Scheer
Great setup. That seemed really good to me. I don't know why I was like,
June Diane Raphael
I'm interested in that because it's a cool setup. I can't. I remember liking who was in it.
Jason Mantzoukas
It's.
June Diane Raphael
Is it Callum Turner and. Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro? Yes.
Paul Scheer
Okay.
June Diane Raphael
Two. Two young actors who I. Who I'm super into. I don't know if they're Geek Squad or not, but I mean.
Paul Scheer
Yeah, we'll see. We'll see. This may make them. It's called One Night Only. One Night Only. Yeah. I'm very like, the trailer is pretty cool. And it's also being. I don't call it buried, but it's being placed in the August slot. Because the August slot, to me, is where you get to do the cooler movies, like, the more interesting ones. It's like, okay, we've been through all the blockbusters. What do we got here?
June Diane Raphael
I'm excited for that. I'm excited for the new Boots Riley movie. I love Boosters.
Paul Scheer
Cannot wait.
June Diane Raphael
I'm such a Boots Riley fan. I think he's absolutely fantastic. So that's one that I'm, like, so excited about.
Paul Scheer
Oh, me too. And I gotta say, I mean, he, to me, is somebody who. His brain works in a very different way. And not in a way like where you can say, like, you know, oh, they'll make a great. Like, Christopher Nolan thinks of movies in these great. But, like, I feel like his version of the world. Like, I am a Virgo. The 7 foot tall or the giant. It's like there's this. There's a visual language that he uses that no one else does. I don't know if you saw a couple weeks ago, but the. They gave out free gas for. I love Boosters. They're like a pico and western here. Like, it was part of the promotion and it turned out to be a nightmare. You should not be giving out free gas at a time when gas is this expensive. The cast is out there pumping gas. Did not work out well.
June Diane Raphael
Do you think we will be doing Masters of the Universe?
Paul Scheer
Well, this is a question.
June Diane Raphael
A lot of people, having covered the Dolph LUNDGREN one.
Paul Scheer
Yes.
June Diane Raphael
I've watched the trailer for this new one. I was not. It made me nervous.
Paul Scheer
Well, it's a little Barbie, right? It's a little, like.
June Diane Raphael
It's a little Barbie. Yes.
Paul Scheer
Right.
June Diane Raphael
Were you a Masters of the Universe, like, as a kid cartoon fan?
Paul Scheer
100%.
June Diane Raphael
Okay. Okay.
Paul Scheer
Were you not or.
June Diane Raphael
I was not. I was just a little older, so it didn't hit me. Right.
Paul Scheer
You know, I have, I. Well, I will say this. People have reached out to me to say, I can't wait till you do this.
June Diane Raphael
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
Some people have also reached out to me, said, I've seen it. Can't wait till you do this. So.
June Diane Raphael
Okay. So.
Paul Scheer
So either way, I am excited. I, like, I am a big believer of shut your brain off Summer. Let me go and let me sit back and enjoy whatever you got. Like, and I, I'm sure that if I can enjoy that, like a Gerard Butler action movie, I would. I'll be very, very happy. I'll be.
June Diane Raphael
I agree 100%. And that, that, you know, I love a dumb blockbuster.
Paul Scheer
Oh, yeah. I mean, I hope, I hope it's good enough to be fun and dumb. What I worry is that it will try to be too serious, and that will be the.
June Diane Raphael
And it won't work. Yes, that's my concern as well.
Paul Scheer
Now, have you heard this thing? I don't know. I'm not saying anything more than what I understand it to be, but that potentially Steven Spielberg has made a sequel to Close Encounters with Disclosure Day.
June Diane Raphael
That's what I've heard as well, but I don't know how much that is true. Or is that just. Is this a actual sequel or is this a spiritual sequel? I'm, I'm curious.
Paul Scheer
Yes. The way that I understand it is there are similarities. So in the sense of that happened and this is happening in the same world. So it's not like there's not a new build of aliens. There's not a new, like.
June Diane Raphael
So it's, it's just, it's, it's, it's more in the continuity of the world where that did happen.
Paul Scheer
Exactly.
June Diane Raphael
Right.
Paul Scheer
So it's. So I think. Which I think is the right way to do it, I hope. I think, I'm curious.
June Diane Raphael
I mean, conceptually, I love that as an idea. I love the idea of making, telling new stories inside of the world of old stories we know without it being uniquely tethered to. Like, what I wouldn't want is for, like, Richard Dreyfus to show up.
Paul Scheer
Well, that's definitely. Don't need that. Don't want it.
June Diane Raphael
Not at all. What I want. I don't need Mr. Holland in this at all.
Paul Scheer
No. And I also feel he's not fun. He's not fun anymore. I don't. Dreyfus.
June Diane Raphael
Dreyfus is not fun anymore.
Paul Scheer
No, we don't need to see. We don't need it. I. The other one that I'm actually. I'll give you one that I saw and one that I'm excited for, one that I saw early on. And I know it's only gotten better and better, but when I saw it, it was great. Is the new David Wayne movie, which is the celebrity sex movie or Sex Pass. It's a Hall Pass.
June Diane Raphael
Yeah, the Hall Pass movie. Yeah.
Paul Scheer
Is it good? So I saw the very first Friends and Family screening. It was in David's living room for, I would say, 10 people max.
June Diane Raphael
Oh, wow.
Paul Scheer
And it worked brilliantly.
June Diane Raphael
Oh, cool.
Paul Scheer
And I believe they even did some reshoots after it. But, like, taking it at just face value, watching it, it is great. Very much in the vein of Wet Hot. Ooh, that makes me happy. Yeah, it's really, really good. And the other one that I'm excited, I'm interested in, because I think you and I, we. We talk about this a lot, but the Supergirl.
June Diane Raphael
Oh, yeah. Tom King, Supergirl.
Paul Scheer
Yes. That's what I'm excited about. The Tom Kings Supergirl makes me pumped in everything that I've seen so far. My. This feels. Looks great, right?
June Diane Raphael
Looks great. I. I'm. I'm like, I'm. I'm trying to also be, like, tamp my excitement down.
Paul Scheer
Yes, I agree.
June Diane Raphael
And. And. And this is coming from, like. I very much enjoyed the Superman movie. Was it last year or two years ago? I very much enjoyed James Superman movie. I. I've. I've rewatched it. I think it's. I think it's terrific. But this looks awesome. Well, it's in a way that I was like, fuck, I'm excited about this.
Paul Scheer
Well, this is the thing that I think it was hard in a way. Like, James Gunn has done a really impossible task. Right. He has the Peacemaker, which is just fantastic. Right. Just nailing it, I think. Then he, you know, introduces Superman, introduces a world, gives us enough of it that it's an entertaining movie. I saw it twice in the theater. I'm all on board. Great. But now it feels like the gates are open. Like, the gates are wide open. And it's like, from what I've seen about Clayface, which looks also looks Great and weird. It's like, I feel like there's gonna be. And that's what I think is great about James Gunn, is that he goes like his own sensibility is all over the place, which is great, which is good.
June Diane Raphael
And I love that. His curiosity and his willingness to let other creators come in and interpret some of these characters differently.
Paul Scheer
Yes.
June Diane Raphael
Is fantastic. Like, that's what's exciting about the Clayface thing. I'm still. I'm still in the bag for Matt Reeves's Batman, even though I know that's not going to be the Batman of James Gunn's dcu. But I'm nonetheless, I'm excited for that.
Paul Scheer
Let me tell you something, Jason. Again, I can't.
June Diane Raphael
Paul, will you please tell me.
Paul Scheer
I gotta tell you. I know a little bit about what's going on on that.
June Diane Raphael
Oh, okay, cool.
Paul Scheer
And all I'm gonna say is, like, jaw agape in just what they're talking about doing. I was like, wait, what? It was nothing that was specific to the thing, but just an overall tonal idea for what. How they're continuing. That makes me so excited. And I also. And I think that that is the promise of the premise that the Joker was supposed to be, which is like, oh, we can also live in this world where it's like. It's like one off. It's like one shots. It's like, we can do this thing, and it's not connected here, but it also feels like, oh, but as a fan, I'm gonna want both of these things. They're doing it.
June Diane Raphael
Yeah, good. Because that's what we want. Like, it doesn't all have to be the same story. Let there be Elseworld stories. Let there be one shots. Like, if you want it to feel like comic, then do it all the way. And because not all comics are all part of the same shared multiverse, there's constantly stories being told all over the place. You know, that's why I think that
Paul Scheer
Wonder man clicked over for so many people. Because, like, oh, oh, oh. This is just a show that takes place in a world that we have a shared knowledge of, but it has nothing to do with that show can be watched without any. Anything.
June Diane Raphael
Oh, yeah, yeah. You don't have to know anything about Wonder man or any of the previous MCU properties. You can just watch Wonder man on its own and have a blast watching Yehya and Sir Ben Kingsley go back and forth in dialogue. That is absolutely hilarious and fantastic.
Paul Scheer
Yeah.
June Diane Raphael
And heartbreaking.
Paul Scheer
Really, really well done. I'm so excited. They're Actually gonna make a second season of that. So that is, that's great, great news for cool shows on ebay, every find has a story. Have I talked to you about the fact that I am now, for the very first time in my life, I am about to finish season three of my very first watch through of the X Files. Whoa. Have we talked about this? Here's the headline, Paul. And I don't know if you're an X Files fan.
Paul Scheer
I am.
June Diane Raphael
X Files is fantastic.
Paul Scheer
Yes.
June Diane Raphael
In a very embarrassing way. There are two properties that I somehow that I dismissed and never got into and in the last couple of years I've now devoured. The first was Star Trek the Next Generation, which I only had like a cursory understanding of and now have watched all of and think is phenomenal. And now the X Files, which is terrific.
Paul Scheer
The X Files to me is there are these shows that you go back and go, oh, they set the tone for everything that I like. They said that they did so much. They really, really did it. And it's. And I would imagine that watching it now, similarly to Lost, is a more enjoyable experience because at the time, you know, the show gets started, it's really great and the episodes are really good. But then it was like, you get caught up in the, the main story and then there were the Monsters of the Week story. And people are like, I don't want a Monster of the Week story. I want the main story. And you. And they're like, okay, well, they're taking a longer time. They're getting famous. It was like, there's a lot, there's a lot of bumpy roads to get to the ending of it, which goes into the movies. But man, it never faltered in quality.
June Diane Raphael
One of the things I'll say is I started it by watching the Monster of the Week episodes because there's a tab.
Paul Scheer
Very Doctor who.
June Diane Raphael
Yes, that's exactly what it is. It's exact. And that's. That's been what has been the. I didn't know. It was like Doctor who and I love that about it. And so like there's a, there's like on, I guess it's Disney or whatever, you can organize it. There's a tab that's just Monsters of the Week episodes. There's A tab. That's the whole. It's dynamite. I've been really loving that. And then I am continuing my endeavor into watching anime. Free written season two is now over and is going to be unequivocally my favorite show of the year. Jujutsu Kaisen. Incredible show. Unbelievable action sequences. And then the new show, Witch Hat Atelier.
Paul Scheer
This is. Wow.
June Diane Raphael
I am 53. Here's the thing, these shows are dynamite. Sentenced to being a hero. Demon hunter. Hunter Times hunter. These are all incredible shows that are so fun, so funny and so immersively satisfying to dig into these weird worlds. Absolutely a blast.
Paul Scheer
Well, this is the. You know, again, I'm still behind on entering into that world but all my favorite people that I trust their opinions of. It's a never ending group of shows.
June Diane Raphael
There's so much of it. There's genuinely too much anime to get into. But these I purposefully have been choosing shows that I read about that are meant to be great but that are also not like, like there's 11 seasons of it. You know what I mean? Like, like, like I said, freer in season two. Sentenced to being a hero. Just finished season one. Jujutsu Kaisen I think only has three seasons. Maybe these are great series.
Paul Scheer
Well now, Jason, I gotta tell you one thing, you know, another talk about never ending or exploding worlds. You know my. A very good friend of mine, I could talk about it now. Has been tasked with continuing the Fast and the Furious universe for television.
June Diane Raphael
Oh wait, who is your friend?
Paul Scheer
Because I saw it announced who also is behind Rockford Files. He's done them both.
June Diane Raphael
Oh, the Boreanis. Rockford Files.
Paul Scheer
Yes. So he is. Rockford Files is going to go as a mid season and PIs are back, baby.
June Diane Raphael
PIs are back in a big way. Rockford Files. I know that our friends Dan Gore and Luke Deltredici are doing the Jake Johnson.
Jason Mantzoukas
Yes.
June Diane Raphael
P.I. comedy P.I.
Paul Scheer
show. There's the Scott Speedman.
June Diane Raphael
Yep. With Keith. Oh my God, Keith David.
Paul Scheer
So funny, so good.
June Diane Raphael
The Scott Speedman one is up now. There's like a ton. We're back, we're back with Private Investigators
Paul Scheer
and, and, and you know, look, you and I love. We have a soft spot for Rockford. So Rockford, great cast. Really fun world.
June Diane Raphael
I'm curious, I'm so curious about Rockford. I'm, I really, I want to know how Boreanis is going to do this. I'm very curious.
Paul Scheer
All right, well then again, let me talk to you outside of school and say, or I could say exactly the way you would want him to play it great. He plays it like James Garner, like, in the. Like, he's funny, he's light, but he's also able to do the heavier stuff of the show. Like, that feels like it has weight
June Diane Raphael
because I was like, he'll definitely be able to nail all of, like the heavier, like, procedural stuff to it. But does he have that light touch? Does he have that twinkle in his eye that I do feel like he had when he was Angel?
Paul Scheer
Well, that's what I was feeling. And that when I was watching it, I was like, oh, he's hitting this sweet spot, which is intimidating but likable. And then that's. And when angel got into the more detective of the week kind of stuff, it was the similar vibe. And I think it's, you know, I just think it's a. It's a great. It's a great one. It's. I'm excited for that. I think that that will be really fun.
June Diane Raphael
Great.
Paul Scheer
But I will say, you know, the Fast and Furious world. So it was announced. It was announced like, you know, so he's been working on both of these things for a very long time. They. And then. But Fast and Furious kind of got added to the upfront slate and was like, here we go. You're going with that one as well. And then it was announced a couple days after that, there are three other ones. There are going to be four.
June Diane Raphael
Four Fast and Furiouses.
Paul Scheer
Yes. All within the. The different worlds. I know where my friend's show takes place and it's in. It's the great. It's a great spot for it to take place and it feels unique. It doesn't feel like territory that's being tread in the films at all. And very much excited about that. But I'm like, wow. So there is a world in which in the next year we're going to have four, you know, in the universe of. Of Fast and Furious.
June Diane Raphael
Potentially fascinating. Yeah, I love that. I'm curious. I hope. I mean, listen, I'm all in. So, like, signing.
Paul Scheer
I'll tell you the one that. The one that he has been doing. Again, I can't talk about it, but I can say, wow. If you were to say, like, pitch in this world. He did a great pitch in this world. And I think what it will feel like, to your point about PIs being back, I think it will feel like. Like a show. Like Knight Rider. Like a show.
June Diane Raphael
Like the old car type shows where it's like Hardcastle and McCormick.
Paul Scheer
Yeah. They're not detectives. But they're driving around in cars. There's like a little bit of illegal stuff. But yeah, you know, look. And if anything, we hopefully will maybe get that movie made. I mean, I know Vin Diesel threatens it every couple of minutes, but you'll see.
June Diane Raphael
I'm so curious. Oh my God, I love this. I can't wait to hear off air more specifics.
Paul Scheer
I will tell you. Yeah, I will tell you. It is fun.
June Diane Raphael
There's two really great new music based podcasts that I'm gonna shout out. One of them just started, so there's only a couple of episodes in. It's called Hit that Perfect Beat the London Records Story. And it's just a great docu series about London records and each of the iterations of London Records and all of the kind of, of new wave bands and the stuff that are from that era of music in the 80s and stuff like that. Really great. But, but London Records predates that, so it's a lot of history. But it's also just great interviews with musicians that are, for me, I love. You know, I didn't even.
Paul Scheer
I'm just looking at the history of London Records and it's like, wow, it is really, really, really interesting. It's like, yeah, there's a lot.
June Diane Raphael
Well, it like exists as like a part of Deca Records for a while and it's. They sign the Stones and they sign. They don't sign the Beatles and it' interesting stuff. And then it kind of dies and then it kind of comes back later as this other entity that has all this like a lot of super popular new wave and post wave bands and stuff.
Paul Scheer
That's so cool. I love it.
June Diane Raphael
Really great. That and Jad Ebomrad, who was the host of Radiolab for many years, put out a podcast last year that I never shouted out, but have been meaning to, which is all about Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, which is incredible. I mean, like, Fela is absolutely one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. And it is a deep, deep, deep dive into Fela, both musically, politically, in every way. He is so significant and so impactful as a person in Africa, in the world, in music, in politics. He's. And just as a character, he's super interesting. And Jad does an incredible job deep diving into Fela Kuti.
Paul Scheer
So, ooh, I love this.
June Diane Raphael
It's called Fela Kuti Fear. No, man, it's a limited series so you can check it out. It's absolutely dynamite.
Paul Scheer
You know, I always have a hard time, like I've been trying very hard to listen to different music, find some stuff. Cause I felt myself getting in my own rut of things. And I gotta tell you, I fell in love with this guy, McKinley Dixon, who is just a great hip hop artist.
June Diane Raphael
Oh, great.
Paul Scheer
And I felt, you know, I just was like very excited. Cause I was like, oh, oh. And he's, he's, he's like on that level of like, he is popular, but I don't know if he is like hit full, full mainstream. And he's on tour. But I would say if you like, you like hip hop, check out this guy. He's just. Great sound. A really, really great sound.
June Diane Raphael
And yeah, there's a couple of records that I'll shout out just because I feel like they've been really a part of my spring so far. One of them is. Is called Vela or via maybe it's Fabiano do Nascimento. It's a Brazilian record that is so beautiful. V I L A is what it is.
Paul Scheer
Okay.
June Diane Raphael
And it's been. I've been playing it constantly on repeat this spring. And in fact there's a song called Spring Theme that is very on brand for the season. Absolutely terrific. There has been for the first time In I think 13 years maybe or longer, new music from the band Boards of Canada, who are one of my favorite electronic, like hypnotic, weird, unknowable kind of bands of. It's just two brothers who make incredible music and have for years. But they have these long fallow periods where they don't release anything. And suddenly a couple of weeks ago, weird stuff started popping up online and people were like, wait a minute, is there new Boards of Canada? And it turns out, yes, a new album called Inferno is coming. Or by now that you're listening to this, it very well may be out. That's been very exciting to me. New Greg Mendez, New Beth Orton, an artist who again hasn't made a record in quite some time. And who I just am, I just absolutely adore. And her new music is fantastic. I love that I've shouted out this guy before again. It's like so much of what I'm enjoying right now is. Is stuff that is relaxing. And I've been on the road and so much of like, what I want is something that's gonna calm me down a little bit. And I always find alabaster de plume music incredibly beautiful and calming. And he's got a new record that's just come out that's absolutely fantastic. Really, really beautiful, beautiful saxophone music. Not jazz necessarily, but Not. Not jazz, if that makes sense.
Paul Scheer
I also have been listening to this band called Mama.
June Diane Raphael
Okay.
Paul Scheer
Which is just kind of like more like an indie rock kind of like. Like, I like that kind of female fronted, like, indie rock sound. And yeah, this band has been really fun. I'm. I'm newer on my journey into them, but I found them again through just a little bit of, you know, hit and miss on Spotify. And Mama has been a big hit for me.
June Diane Raphael
Ooh, I love that.
Paul Scheer
Great. So there you go.
Jason Mantzoukas
Good.
June Diane Raphael
Ooh, a music corner.
Paul Scheer
I'm trying, you know, I'm trying.
June Diane Raphael
There's been this singer, songwriter Alice Costello has put out great new music. This band, the Montvales, I'm really enjoying. Yeah, there's a bunch of good new stuff that's been really exciting and really fun to put together for a spring list of being like, hey, it's spring, let's get out there, let's fucking.
Paul Scheer
I like getting.
June Diane Raphael
It's bopping.
Paul Scheer
All right, well, Jason so much here.
June Diane Raphael
Can I plug something that I. That's a me. Plug, plug and wait. Did I already plug this? Forgive me. Scott will tell me if I did. I was a guest on the Hank green show on YouTube Ask Hank Anything. And I just saw a clip of
Paul Scheer
this where about asking if you should wipe your butt.
June Diane Raphael
Is that asking if you should wipe your pet's butt?
Paul Scheer
Okay.
June Diane Raphael
The question was, hey, shouldn't we be wiping our pets butts after they take a shit before they come and sit on our pillows and sit next to us on the couch? Like, what are we doing? There's turds back there.
Paul Scheer
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
June Diane Raphael
And then that's just one of many questions I asked him over a very rambling two hour conversation that was delightful and wonderful. And he made such a concerted effort to answer all my nonsense questions. It's on YouTube, I think it's called Ask Hank Anything. So truly. Check it out. I think you guys will enjoy it.
Paul Scheer
I love it. And one of the questions you did ask, are there ways you can retrieve lost memories?
Jake
Yeah.
June Diane Raphael
I was like, I have such trouble remembering stuff. I have such a bad memory for my. In that way that I feel like you are so good and have such wonderful recall to tell a story. You know, not just to tell a story, oh, this happened. But to tell the truly, like the specifics of a story.
Paul Scheer
You know, I don't have that Mary Lou Henner disease, but every now and then it does seem like it's not a burden to her. And that's what is so fascinating. Is like, she can Mary Lou Henner and be like, oh, yeah, you were wearing that red shirt, and you had on the. The blue Mets cap, and it was like, what? Like, to be able to.
June Diane Raphael
It's called autobiographical memory.
Paul Scheer
Oh, wow.
June Diane Raphael
Is what it's called. And it's incredible. And I have, like, the opposite of that.
Paul Scheer
I'm like, well, June is like that as well. Like, June has a great David Fincher story. And we were talking about David Fincher the other night, and I was like, what would you tell her story? And she's like, I don't remember. What do you mean, story? I was like, you have a great David Fincher story. She's like, no, I don't.
June Diane Raphael
I don't.
Paul Scheer
What are you talking about? And then I told her story from her telling me her story.
June Diane Raphael
Yeah, because now you keep her stories.
Paul Scheer
I kept her story. Yeah. It is. It's like one of those things that's always so funny, like, when we talk, because I'm like, you. You. You were the one who told me this, but at least I'm glad that one of us is remembering it all. And the. The. The best. The best one that was articulated kind of perfectly. And June had. June had texted me. She said, have you watched Widow's Bay now? I had. Had told her, I watch it. I want to watch it with her. I think that she will love it. It's so good. And she's like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But she wrote me this very impassioned thing about how I have to watch it with her. She's so excited to introduce it to me, and I'm like, not only have I talked to you about it, I've offered us to watch it multiple times, and you said no. And then what June was able to do is hire a gospel singer to take our text and transcribe it into gospel music, which I'll send you.
June Diane Raphael
Oh, that's very funny.
Paul Scheer
It is. It's pretty great. Yes. All right, Jason, we will talk soon.
June Diane Raphael
Can't wait.
Paul Scheer
All right, thank you, Jason. A reminder, you can see Jason and I in New York June 11th, 12th, and 13th. We are at the Del Close marathon. If you cannot be in New York for the Del Close marathon, don't worry. You can live stream us. You can also see us in Los Angeles on June 26th at Largo. So many fun, big shows, but we love when we can live stream so you can watch us. I think it's gonna be a blast at dcm. All right, so without any further ado, it is time to announce next week's movie. Next week I'll be going from screams and flight to screams of fright. That's right, we'll be watching the 1978 supernatural horror movie the Manitou, starring Tony Curtis, Susan Strasper, Michael Ansara and BURGESS Meredith. Here's IMDb's breakdown of the plot. A psychic's girlfriend finds out that a lump on her back is a growing reincarnation of a 400 year old demonic Native American spirit. Matt Brunson from Film Frenzy says the Manitou is absurd, insane, and, yeah, kind of awful, but there's nevertheless a high watchability factor. Let's take a listen to the trailer.
Jason Mantzoukas
The Manitou, starring Tony Curt, John Michael and Sarah. What does a white man want with Indian magic? Susan Strasberg. Innocent people tormented by terror, threatened by the unknown, trapped by an ancient horror. The Manitou, rated pg.
Paul Scheer
If you want to watch the Manitou, you can stream it for free on Zumu Zumu Play. Don't know what that is, but you can stream it for free there. Or you can rent it on Prime Video and Apple tv. All right, everybody, that is it for Last Looks. If you listen to us on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, please rate and review us. And we'll see you next week for Manitou.
Kelly Ripa
Hey, it's Kelly Ripa. And if you don't know, I have a podcast where I get to say whatever I want. Hold on, let me get a shovel
June Diane Raphael
in a body bag.
Kelly Ripa
I envision doing a podcast with the conversations that happen in my dressing room off camera, where people feel free to talk. No hair, no makeup. This is my kind of job.
Sylvia
Only Kelly Ripa can ask me these questions.
Kelly Ripa
I'm flipping the script and saying what's really on my mind.
Paul Scheer
We're seeing a different side of you. It's a little bit more honest.
Kelly Ripa
When the cameras go off, the real fun begins.
Paul Scheer

Episode Focus: Listener corrections, pop culture chat, and summer recommendations for HDTGM's recent episode on the 1994 Wesley Snipes skydiving thriller Drop Zone.
This “Last Looks” installment of How Did This Get Made? explores all things Drop Zone. Host Paul Scheer (joined by June and Jason) reads calls and messages from listeners correcting and expanding on details from the film, dives deep into skydiving subculture, and shares excitement over upcoming movies, TV, music, and other pop culture. As always, the trio’s signature humor and intense curiosity shine, with the episode also offering plenty of offbeat recommendations and a glimpse at the movie for next week.
Next Movie:
The Manitou (1978) – a bizarre supernatural horror with a psychic’s girlfriend growing a 400-year-old demonic Native American spirit on her back.
The episode combines irreverent, fast-paced, and deeply nerdy banter—jumping easily between earnest pop culture analysis, silly asides, inside jokes, and recommendations. The hosts’ rapport is built on decades of comedy and fandom, creating a lively and inclusive conversation even as esoteric details about bad movies are lovingly critiqued and celebrated.
If you missed Drop Zone or skipped this HDTGM episode, this “Last Looks” edition brings you up to speed on listener corrections—like where all those dead bodies came from, how much skydiving cinema gets wrong, and a surprising amount of real-world skydiver lawlessness. You’ll get Paul, Jason, and June’s picks for movies, TV (especially superhero fare), and music, plus plenty of '90s and '00s nostalgia. Most importantly, come next time prepared for The Manitou—an even weirder bad movie ride.
