The American public does not like ice. Are you, by putting ICE in this position, harming national security because they can't effectively do the jobs that they were initially intended to do?
Chris
Yes, it's all harming our national security. I don't know if we've ever been less safe, less stable, less trusted. This is a circuit breaker moment for America.

Know that we're all in this together. Stay vigilant, my friends. Stay vigilant. Stay warm. Keep finding that sunshine. It is fucking cold out here. Woo. Bring the heat, folks. Good morning, independent Americans from freezing cold New York City, usa, World Trade center behind me, Statue of Liberty ahead of me. And I got a quick morning quick reaction podcast for you to react to the latest news and catch you up on what's coming up next. I am walking toward the sun, which I highly recommend you do. It feels like 15 degrees here in New York City and especially when it's cold in the winter. Try to get some sunlight in the morning, set your circadian rhythms, give you some vitamin D, and start your day off right because we need that light to contrast all the cold and the ferocious heat. And as cold as it is here and it's fucking cold. 15 degrees and windy. It is colder inside Ukraine, where I send love and support to all our friends who are fighting for freedom and also to all the brave freedom fighters in Iran and across America, where the news continues. And I want to focus on Minneapolis again and remind you that yesterday the president again threatened the Insurrection act to use the Insurrection act to call in federal troops on American citizens. The Insurrection act is only supposed to be used to quell uprisings and rebellions. The last time it was used was by George Bush in 1992 in response to the LA riots after Rodney King. Here's the big difference. The governor asked him for the help. Governor Tim Wallace in Minnesota is not asking for the help. He's telling him the opposite. Don't send in those troops. The only time that's happened is when they were sent in during the civil rights battles to open schools in the South. This is not that situation. This is not a rebellion. This is not a civil rights issue. This is an extension of Trump's power and the Insurrection act is something he's threatened to use from before he was elected. He threatened in his first term. This is a circuit breaker moment for America. A critical line of departure. General Kaine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will be critical and might be the only thing stopping him from using it. I'm going to get into this much more later today in a special Insurrection act episode with Asher Rangapa. We're also going to do Friday football and I'll catch you up on all the latest news that happens between now and then. Also yesterday, I got to react to the embarrassing news that came out of the White House. The other embarrassing news, opposition leader from Venezuela, Maria Machado has been brave and courageous, fighting against Maduro and oppression. She was smuggled out of Venezuela to Europe safely just a few weeks ago and she received a Nobel Peace Prize. And yesterday she bent the knee and she gave the Nobel Peace Prize to Donald Trump. Look, I get that she wants to get power back. I get that she maybe is thinking by any means necessary. But by giving this gift and kissing the ass of our sycophantic president, our egomaniacal fascist president, is embarrassing and shameful. It was a really low moment to see another world leader, a respected world leader, kiss Trump's ass with flattery and fealty. I hope that Machado can take power and inspire people, but she shouldn't have to kiss Trump's ass to get it. If she's truly supported by the people, the people will support her and she doesn't need to give her Nobel Peace Prize to anyone. But this is the moment we're living in. I want to continue to focus on the Insurrection act in particular. I think it is the big Thing that the most important story I've said before Donald Trump most important thing to focus on is that he could do anything he wants with the most powerful military the world has ever seen. That includes invoking the Insurrection act and setting federal troops against American citizens, including in Minneapolis. He's going to toggle between federal troops and ICE. He knows that if ICE gets popular, he can send in the 82nd and then he can challenge protesters to try to contrast and clash with the 82nd Airborne instead of ice. Puts our troops in a terrible position. Puts ice in a terrible position. If you didn't hear my episode yesterday with Sheriff Chris Swanson, who's running for governor in Michigan, check it out. This guy's a cop. He's an emt. He's been on the front lines. He right now is running Genesee County's police. He's at the epicenter of all this. And Detroit could be next. So check out that episode. And also here's a quick hit. I continue to do TV pretty regularly and every Thursday I talk to Katie Tur on what is now Ms. Now And I want to share with you a quick hit that I did yesterday talking about the importance of the Insurrection Act. Not enough media is focused on this. They are not spending enough time on it. They are getting distracted by other things we will not because we have to focus on not just what's happening now. Well, what's happening next. I'm going to help you stay vigilant. My thanks to Katie Turr for having me on every Thursday, usually at a 3 o' clock hour. Check that out. Here it is. My quick conversation with Katie Tur. I hope it helps you stay vigilant.

Paul, is this national security issue? She makes the point that ICE was created in the aftermath of 9 11. There were visa overstays. They do serve an important national security function. They do serve a function. There is a reason for them to exist. In using ICE in this way, the way the administration has done so militarizing them and allowing, unleashing them and encouraging maybe even them to be as aggressive as they've been, it's shown that the American public, it's showing the American public a side of this agency they don't like. Even further, the polling for ICE is down at levels that, that we haven't seen in a while. We can put up the polling right now. The American public does not like ice. Are you by putting ICE in this position, harming national security because they can't effectively do the jobs that they were initially intended to do?
Chris
Yes. It's all harming our national security. I don't know if we've ever been less safe, less stable, less trusted. This is a circuit breaker moment for America. The Insurrection act is something he's threatened for a long time. I've been calling it out. I've been warning people that he's serious about it. People said I was being alarmist. It is here. He has said he wants to use it. He is floating it. His press secretary is now putting it out. There they are. They have been given plans from Hegseth and Tulsi Gabbard. They know exactly how to implement it. And they've been waiting and moving toward and instigating the moment. And now Minneapolis is ground zero. Minneapolis is the front line for the soul of our democracy. And if he tries to invoke the Insurrection act, he is crossing a line that is the most dangerous line he's crossed before. We have to hold the line as Americans. We have to say, hell no. We can't have him putting federal troops into Minneapolis or into Chicago or anywhere else. This is how the rest of the country starts to look like Minneapolis. And we will all be less safe and our enemies will be celebrating. This is very real, very front and center. He can do anything he wants with the most powerful military the world has ever seen. That includes putting them on the streets under the Insurrection Act. And every American should say no.

Podcast: Independent Americans with Paul Rieckhoff
Episode: BONUS Quick Response Pod: Trump Insurrection Act Threat, Machado Gives Trump Her Nobel Prize, ICE in Minneapolis and Katy Tur Reports on MSNow
Date: January 16, 2026
Host: Paul Rieckhoff
This bonus "quick response" episode, hosted by Paul Rieckhoff from a frigid New York morning, delivers a fast-paced rundown of urgent national developments. Rieckhoff tackles four explosive topics: President Trump’s threat to invoke the Insurrection Act, Maria Machado gifting her Nobel Peace Prize to Trump, the contentious use of ICE in Minneapolis, and his recent appearance with Katy Tur to discuss the Insurrection Act on MNBC's "MsNow." The episode’s core theme is a rallying call to vigilance and resistance against authoritarianism and abuse of federal power, especially as the country stands at a self-described “circuit breaker moment."
Quote (Paul Rieckhoff, 01:39):
“The Insurrection Act is only supposed to be used to quell uprisings and rebellions... This is not that situation. This is not a rebellion. This is not a civil rights issue. This is an extension of Trump's power and the Insurrection Act is something he's threatened to use from before he was elected.”

Chris warning about national security erosion (07:58):
“I don't know if we've ever been less safe, less stable, less trusted. This is a circuit breaker moment for America.”
Rieckhoff on the militarization of federal agencies (03:55):
“He’s going to toggle between federal troops and ICE. He knows that if ICE gets unpopular, he can send in the 82nd, and challenge protesters to try to contrast and clash with the 82nd Airborne instead of ICE. Puts our troops in a terrible position. Puts ICE in a terrible position.”
This bonus episode of Independent Americans delivers a bracing look at the intersection of federal power, civil liberties, and political expediency in 2026 America. Rieckhoff, ever defiant and passionate, centers the episode on informed resistance, urging his audience to stay alert, share information, and stand united as the country faces “one of the most dangerous lines” ever crossed in its modern history.
