The pigs are at the trough. Trump's expected overseas real estate income has tripled to $430 million in his second term. Eric Trump is doing deals in China while Taiwan goes unmentioned and Iran keeps arming the people killing Ukrainians and Americans. Nvidia's CEO is being paraded around as the administration floats opening AI chip markets to Beijing. Don Jr. is tied to a drone company that just landed a Pentagon contract — inside a defense budget heading toward $1.5 trillion, a 40% spike with no apparent guardrails on family conflicts of interest. This isn't politics. It's a national security fire sale, and the Angry Middle smells it.

social that the corruption is what stuck. That's what ultimately got rid of Orban and changed over the leadership. I think that's what I hear more and more, especially from independents. People are sick of the corruption, especially in Washington. And it looks like if there is a free and fair election in November, there's going to be hell to pay, not just for Trump, but for the Republicans.
Political Commentator 2
Trump Organization is run by Eric Trump. Here is a little bit more on this this the conflicts of interest 430 million. Trump's expected income from overseas real estate developments in the second term. That figure was 140 million in the first terms of the so it was a lot then. It's Even more now. Trump's foreign development income by country between 2014 and 202024 will list that here. It is a lot of money if you are able to add that up quickly in your head. I understand if you cannot. A lot of ethics watchdogs are certainly concerned. Here is something from crew Enormous spike in income from the UAE is thanks to huge new licensing deals grossing over $20 million in fees, according to Trump's most recent filing. Both deals are with Dark Global, the international arm of a Saudi Arabian real estate company with which the Trump Organization has a long so not China specifically here, but when you take the totality of the president's organization, his sons and what we're seeing overseas, and you put that next to Eric Trump showing up in China again, optics.
Political Commentator 1
It's gross, it's outrageous. It's un American and it's deeply unpopular. I mean, him bringing billionaires and CEOs along in addition to his son, and really focusing on business deals and ignoring Taiwan, ignoring potentially China's support for Iran, I think underscores how wrong this is and how bad it is for America. And I think it's really stacking up because there's an overflow in this country of people who want to eat the rich. They want payback, they feel like they're getting screwed. And this just emphasizes the optics of that. But the reality of it, I mean, we're trying to figure out how to pay for gas prices and they're doing big deals with the Chinese. And I think most Americans are sick of it. We saw in Hungary, I think very importantly that the corruption is what stuck. That's what ultimately got rid of Orban and changed over the leadership. I think that's what I hear more and more, especially from independence. People are sick of, of the corruption, especially in Washington. And it looks like if there is a free and fair election in November, there's going to be hell to pay, not just for Trump, but for the Republicans.
Political Commentator 2
The head of Nvidia, Nvidia there with Donald Trump. And Nvidia makes our chips, our AI powered chips, and they're good chips. Why would we want to give that to China? Why would we want to open that market to China?
Political Commentator 1
We would do that if we put profit ahead of national security and especially if it's personal profit ahead of national security. But I think the national security part is very important because this is happening on a parallel track where they're asking the government and the country rather for $1.5 trillion for a defense budget, and they now told us that it wasn't 25 billion in Iran, it's 29 billion. So the pigs are at the trough, especially around the Pentagon. And it includes Eric's brother, Don Jr. Who has a connection to a drone company that just got a contract from the Pentagon. So the Pentagon budget is unprecedented. It's a 40% increase. And there seems to be no concern about conflict of interest, either within his family or across the government. And that is, I think, something we should particularly focus on, because if the Pentagon budget does go through at that level, we will see unprecedented levels of profit, and we won't necessarily be any safer. We have a great example, and it's TikTok, right? How do you feel about the Chinese having access to everybody's data and information who has downloaded TikTok? I mean, this is actually a national security and policy example that we have in recent history that we should look to. I mean, we have to always be guarding against our adversaries and any potential adversaries. And I think, again, I will underscore they're not talking about Taiwan enough. They're not talking about whether Iran is helping the Russians kill Ukrainians and support Iranians in killing Americans. And though that's very conveniently left out of a lot of Trump's priorities. And the Chinese are celebrating that. They're happy to have that. And I think in the end, it's a good week for China.
Political Commentator 2
Federal funding for all elections, I think that is smart. I think money has gotten so out of control in this country. And, Paul, when Nina's talking about the Democrats, I think, to be fair to her, we should point out that Americans don't trust politicians, generally speaking, especially ones they don't know. They don't trust the federal government because they look at them and they think they're all bought off. And they think that about Democrats and Republicans, and they've thought that about them even before Donald Trump came along. Donald Trump just came along and exploited that vulnerability, that mistrust of the system, and said he was gonna fix it, but then, you know, didn't and is doing all of the things we see him doing now.
Political Commentator 1
I think that's right. Let's start with the Raskin list. How is that stuff already not in place?
Political Commentator 2
I know.
Political Commentator 1
I mean, let's start there, right? I think a bipartisan approach would be why is this stuff already not law? Right. This seems like common sense ways to ensure that corruption isn't the point.
Political Commentator 2
Why it's not already law is because these are the rules that got them elected. And it's hard to get them to
Political Commentator 1
vote against themselves, which underscores how corrupt the entire system is. And I think Nina's onto something very important, which is that most Americans, 45%, are independent, only 27 are Democrat and Republican, and they want to throw all the bums out. They feel like they're all corrupt and they're all crooked and they're all getting rich and we're all getting screwed. Especially when gas prices hit $4.50 a gallon, fertilizer's up, diesel's up, and Trump's making deals with billionaires in China. Right? I mean, but here's the opportunity for the Democrats. Trump is the billionaire head of the other party. Right? The Democrats don't have someone like that that you can point a finger to and say, that guy's the example. So I think they have an opportunity to really gain the populist outrage and channel it in November toward the Republicans, because Trump is in charge. And this is really what most Americans want. Corruption, I think, is front and center. It's gonna continue to grow. They want the rich, they want payback, they want to see people taken down, and they want to see politicians most of all. I mean, the Democratic Party is actually less popular than Donald Trump, but Congress is less popular than all of them.
Political Commentator 2
Is that. Is that true still? I think the numbers have been true, especially among independents. Yeah.
Political Commentator 1
I mean, and that's. I think the growing outrage is focused
Political Commentator 2
on all politics because Democrats, not Democrats. But the American public now says that they trust Democrats more with tax policy than they do Republicans, which is a big change. They trust Democrats now more with the economy than they do Republicans, which is also a big change.
Political Commentator 1
But low, Barbara. Very, very low bar. I mean, the undercurrent that I'm gonna continue to underscore is that they're sick of it. All right? And this is why 60% of young people are unaffiliated and independent. They don't want either party. They feel like the system is broken, and anybody who's in elected office, whether they know their name or not, they generally want them out. But Trump is the opportunity, especially if they want to get independent voters to side with them in November. Trump is the opportunity.
Political Commentator 2
And corruption is the worst outing coordinated by the military. At the time, the FBI took pains to note the director was not on vacation when he traveled to Hawai, highlighting his walking tour of the bureau's Honolulu field office and meetings with local law enforcement. Is it fair? I mean, you're there. Is it fair to go on a snorkeling trip?
Political Commentator 1
No. I mean, he's a ridiculous jackass on a reality TV show that we're paying for. He's Crash Patel. I mean, he's not just embarrassing the FBI. He's embarrassing the entire country. The whole world is laughing at us. China, when they meet with Trump today, is just saying, oh, wow, this is who you have as your FBI director. And keep in mind, we've got the World cup coming with dozens of Super Bowls, essentially, is what Mark Wayne Mullen's calling them all around the country. And that's the guy who's responsible for security at the World Cup. I mean, he's not serious. He's not capable. He's an extreme politician. He's overtly political, and he's terrible for the FBI. The FBI is gonna take a generation to recover from him alone. And the day he's out is the day we're all safer.

Independent Americans with Paul Rieckhoff
Episode: "The Pigs Are at the Trough" – From Nvidia to Drones: Trump's National Security Fire Sale
Date: May 18, 2026
This episode of Independent Americans dives into the intensifying public frustration with corruption and profit-driven policymaking in Washington, focusing on the financial and ethical entanglements of Donald Trump and his associates. Host Paul Rieckhoff and guests critique the Trump family’s global business dealings, the intertwining of defense spending with self-enrichment, and the broad bipartisan distrust among American voters. The conversation links these themes to current events—including Beijing summits, AI chip deals, Pentagon contracts, and the erosion of public faith in both parties—and explores how these could shape the coming November elections.
| Timestamp | Topic | |-----------|--------------------------------------------| | [02:31] | Trump Organization overseas profits & UAE | | [03:43] | Public anger over corruption and optics | | [04:40] | Nvidia, national security vs. profit | | [04:55] | Pentagon spending, drone contracts | | [06:16] | Systemic distrust in politicians | | [07:00] | Anti-corruption proposals and reform | | [08:29] | Rise of independents and electoral impact | | [09:11] | Critique of FBI leadership & U.S. image |
The tone throughout is urgent, populist, and often scathing, with explicit calls for reform and outrage over entrenched corruption. The language is plainspoken, direct, and occasionally sarcastic, matching the “angry middle” ethos the show cultivates.
This episode makes stark the connections between elite self-enrichment, public policy, and the dangerous erosion of trust in America’s institutions—framing November’s election as a potentially pivotal reckoning, especially for independent voters. The hosts contend that unless corruption is confronted directly, the country risks further division and disenchantment.
For listeners seeking to stay informed about the intersection of politics, business, and public outrage—and how it’s shaping the 2026 election—this episode is essential.
