Right, Exactly. Right. And she's just this wild model. She's on the back of a motorcycle at one point in this very iconic kind of photo shoot with an enormous gown on. And Gia, the model, does die. It was back in the days of the Bad Girl and Angelina Jolie. And I just. I remember so vividly. It was actually one of the first times I had ever covered a movie premiere. It might have been the first being at the party and seeing her. She was in the back of the room. She was wearing sort of, you know, like a tight tank top, black leather pants that kind of get up, if it wasn't that. Exactly. And she was by herself, and she was just leaning against this wall, and I went up and asked her a couple of questions, and she was really very nice, very poised. Seemed lovely, you know, but it's always struck me that she, you know, was not somebody who was up on a banquette dancing. You know, she was like, I don't really want to be here at this premiere. I'm doing my job. But she wasn't surrounded by a lot of hangers on. It's really rare to see the star of the movie standing alone at the premiere. And I think that says a lot about who she is just as a person and how she's gone through life. You know, she's so independent.

Like the Khmer Rouge and the way that they completely destroyed their own country. Right. You know, there was a enormous genocide that happened in Cambodia and there's still killing fields there and skulls stacked up high. And she had never seen anything like that.

I came to this country and fell in love with its people and learned about its history and in doing so realized how little I actually knew in my early 20s about the world. And so this country for me has been a. Was my awakening.

She hadn't seen that poverty, the loss of limbs from landmines, the way that, you know, these people are really living in a totally different reality than the one she came from. And she was very affected by it.

Because he's just like always wanted this modern stuff or mid century modern or something like that.

So Angelina is becoming very philanthropic. She wants to travel the world. So she and Brad are just going all over the place. Africa, Haiti, New Orleans. You know, he adopts her two kids, Maddox and Sah. He persuades her to have biological Children. And she gives birth to Shiloh in 2006 in Namibia. And then they have twins, Vivian and Knox in 2008. They also adopt Pax, who is from Vietnam. And they're like buying houses all over the place, right? Like, everybody sort of knows this, that this is the way they're living. But what is also really interesting is that Brad is like churning out these prestige movies, Moonlight, Moneyball, things like that. And Angelina is, you know, she's trying to direct, like the Land of Blood and Honey about Bosnia, which is inspired by some of this UN work. And she's probably not making as much money as he is at this point. They do get married in 2014. They say that's mostly because the kids want them to. And, you know, in their wild and crazy life, they decide they want this European base. And this is where Miraval comes in, right?

And Miraval is this huge thousand acre chateau and vineyard in a valley in France. Its name, Miraval, is French for miracle. And it's just this huge estate of olive and oak trees, and lavender fields, a lake and vineyards and ancient stone buildings and a 35 room manor house.

It's actually where they get married and they start doing all sorts of things there. So they're not only producing wine, Brad is doing that, and he's getting super into it. They're producing honey, olive oil, you know, they're making music. It becomes this incredible, incredibly important place to them. And it's a real business, it's a real wine business. And at one point, Angelina writes to Brad and says, above all, it is the place we brought the twins home to. It's a place where we were married over a plaque in my mother's memory. A place where I thought I would grow old. But it is also the place that marks the beginning of the end of our family.

So things start falling apart at this point. There was Hollywood talk that their lifestyle had taken its toll on Brad Pitt. And he wanted a more stable, normal life where they were maybe just in one place. But meanwhile, it also seems that he

I mean, he once said that he couldn't remember a day since he got out of college when he wasn't boozing or had a spliff or something. And he basically said he stopped all of that except drinking when he started his family. But by all accounts, he was very much drinking and also had an alcohol business. Which leads us to this incident that

occurred in September 2016, when they were

on a private plane back from Miraval. What actually happened here?

[Vanessa Grigoriad]

I Mean, basically, what happened is it sounds like Brad was drunk. You know, they had a fight on the plane. And allegedly, what happens is that he accuses Angelina of being too deferential to the children in some ways. And he pulled her into the bathroom and started yelling at her. He grabbed her by the head and shook her, grabbed her shoulders, shook her again, and pushed her into the bathroom wall. He also punched the ceiling, supposedly four times. And the kids are wondering what's happening. Are you. They're like, are you okay? And he's basically saying, no, she's not okay. She's ruining the family. She's crazy. And, you know, the allegation is as well, that he lunged at one of these kids, and Angelina's trying to hold him back, and he throws her off, and the children are trying to protect each other, and he chokes one of the children and hits another one in the face. So it could not be any worse. She also alleged that he poured beer on her and the children when they were trying to sleep. They end up landing in a place called International Falls, which is someplace in Minnesota. And at that point, the kids want to get off the plane, and Angelina wants to get off the plane. And he allegedly is saying, you know, you can't leave the plane for, like, 20 minutes.

Really bad. Yeah, really, really, really bad.

And we should say Brad Pitt has denied all these allegations. And at the time Angelina Jolie got in touch with the FBI, it wouldn't be revealed that it was her who contacted the authorities until much later, but it was her. And she basically got in touch and told the FBI that Brad Pitt physically and verbally assaulted her and their children when they were on the plane. And the special agent from the FBI then met with the Assistant U.S. attorney. They decided they wouldn't pursue criminal charges. And so Brad Pitt was never charged, and the investigation was closed.

Which is crazy to me, because I wonder if it was sort of like an old boy network protecting Brad Pitt.

I don't know. I mean, from what I've read, Child and Family Services were cold and did. Did look into it, and they. They don't mess around, you know, but regardless, five days later, Angelina files for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences and asking for sole custody of all of the kids. And thus begins their very messy and long divorce, which plays out, really, in competing tabloid inches. I mean, TMZ is quoting Brad Pitt saying that Angelina has unleashed hell by allegedly spinning stories about his anger issues

that attract unwelcome attention.

And then she's accusing him of paying meaningful child support. But according to a source close to Brad Pitt, which is maybe Brad Pitt's publicist, that's my conjecture. He paid $3 million in initial bills and pays millions more per year in child support and also loaned her $8 million of the $25.4 million she spent on her new Los Feliz home that she bought after the divorce. But it's this really messy fight over custody and also over this, this expensive winery that they both seem to love so much.

So this divorce drags on for many, many years and the winery is a big part of it and the custody of the kids is another big part of it. But what is the most interesting to me is how it is all playing out both in the courts and in the media and what's getting revealed at what time. So a huge turning point seems to happen in May 2021 when Brad Pitt wins joint custody. And right after that, a California judge grants Angelina Jolie permission to sell half of her stake in Miraval in this lovely winery they have. Brad Pitt wanted to buy her stake, apparently, but instead she sold it to a Russian billionaire and to Brad Pitt, he saw this as a betrayal. A source close to him said, quote, it is not a coincidence that she sold her interest in Miraval to an adversarial party and part of the family home to a stranger right after a judge granted Brad a huge win. A 5050 custody.

Yeah. And Brad is now filing his own countersuits right to try to stop this. He doesn't want the sale to Stolli to go through.

Brad's lawsuit centers around a breach of contract claim alleging that he and Angelina had an enforceable agreement that neither of them would sell off their interest in the winery without mutual consent. So he's accusing her of not only violating that mutual consent agreement by selling her interest to the Stully Group, but he also claims that she did so in secret and with the intent to intentionally sabotage his business and force him into a hostile partnership with the owners of Stoli.

And he is basically saying, look, you know, we had this agreement that we would not sell without approval of the other. So basically this, you know, thing stays in the family whether or not we break up.

So that means he wants to shut down whatever she is saying, like stuff that happened on the plane.

So he's filed a suit, she's filed a countersuit. And then in August 2022, Angelina Jolie makes an anonymous FOIA request that's a Freedom of Information act request asking for the FBI file on that September 2016 plain interview. And she did so anonymously. I should say she filed as a Jane Doe, but it would later be reported that it was actually Angelina Jolie herself who asked for that file.

So strange. I don't even know if I understand that.

[Guest/Commentator]

Well, I think there's a couple reasons why that might have happened. I mean, an attorney for Jane Doe who refused to reveal her client's identity said that our position is that victims

and survivors should be able to access

[Guest/Commentator]

federal agency records of crimes so they can advocate for, for help and trauma care and legal protection for their children and themselves. So she's basically saying like, I have a right to access this document.

[Natalie Robermed]

It exists.

But the other side is that you know, this for your request and what's actually in it obviously hurts Brad Pitt. You know, meanwhile, all this time he's still producing movies with Plan B, his production company. He's still starring in films and people have maybe forgotten about this alleged plane incident. And then after she submits this FOIA request, the redacted FBI report leaks and you know, it launches a wave of really negative headlines. For Brad Pitt, about what Angelina Jolie alleges she experienced.

Yeah, all the stuff that I was talking about before. Right. It all comes out.

She also says, by the way, that she suffered injuries to her back and elbow and shared a photo of the injury on her elbow with the FBI. But from Pitt's side or a source close to him, there are allegations that she's changing her story, that she's kind of rehashing it and reimagining what happened six years ago to add more details that make it seem worse every time she doesn't get what she wants. I'm paraphrasing a source close to Pitt.

Brad gets sober, and the whole front seems pretty quiet for a while. But then, you know, in the last month or so, there's just been, like, news all over the place because Angelina is promoting a movie called Couture. So she's doing press, and she's being pretty open, saying things like, I haven't dated anybody in the last decade since I've been with Brad. And at the same time, she is also maybe or maybe not involved in the kids coming out and saying that they're dropping his last name. And at the same time, there's filings going on with Miraval where she's saying she doesn't want to turn over her task records or financial records back to 2017. You know, she's saying she has alleged financial vulnerability. So I need to see those tax records. You know, they're basically having this fight again over the winery. And there's been a lot of press about how Brad's side is actually winning this winery debate. And just as like, a sophisticated watcher of the way the media works, it does feel as though you have Angelina and the kids, not all of the kids, but you kind of see them with Angelina. And then Brad very much on the outside, and he's just trying to argue his case or get back maybe at her or do something to try to maintain a posture of dominance here.

Brad Pitt allegedly put in $50 million more than Angelina Jolie into. He put in his time, his energy, sweat equity.

There was always plans to revamp the studio.

So this case is not only about the money, but it's really about the time and the heart and the soul that he put into this business that was supposed to be for his kids.

[Vanessa Grigoriad]

Even though it seems pretty clear that this breakup is pretty final. The kids have made decisions, and, you know, she's trying to live her life.

[Guest/Commentator]

I don't know. I mean, this whole situation just seems so Horrible. It almost makes me feel gross to speculate on it. But I just think divorce is really hard and anybody who's been divorced knows that it's horrible. And these are two people who live on such an extreme scale that it's like rather than fighting over a small house or a sofa that each person loves and they want to keep, they're fighting over this huge, huge winery. It just seems really sad to me. But maybe the bright spot for Angelina at least is that she seems to be moving on. I mean, she's pretty publicly said that she plans to leave la, and not just la, leave the us Whether that's to go to Cambodia, which has kind of become her adopted second home, or somewhere else. I mean, she seems very committed to all the humanitarian work she's been doing. And maybe she'll just will leave LA and all of Hollywood behind her, who knows?

[Vanessa Grigoriad]

Yeah, I mean, I think as a beautiful but older woman, I think we'll probably be seeing more of Brad on the screens for longer, especially since it does look like he had a facelift recently. And, you know, I have a feeling that he will be in our lives for another couple decades where she is really committed to smaller projects and sort of figuring out what's going on internationally. It's possible that a lot of this got really messy and that neither of them really were able to let go of this relationship and that's why this has been so complex for so long. But I really do respect her. I mean, her humanitarian work has been incredible. She's been incredibly outspoken political issues. And so in this case, you know, even though he has pointed out a lot of issues, I would give her the benefit of the doubt.

So obviously this is our take. We know you guys don't always agree with us and that's kind of the beauty of media in this day and

age is that it's a two way street.

We got a lot of comments about Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, for example, and this may be another one of those situations where everyone has their own very strong opinion. In any case, this contretemps with Brad and Angelina is probably going to still be going on for a really long time. So it's not the last you'll hear of it.
