Welcome to Inside the Program. I'm Joe Cook. That's Eric Naleen. Thank you all for watching. Gonna go over some team news just before the start of preseason camp. Don't you start calling it fall camp when I'm gone, because this is my last show. It's my last day with Inside Texas. Been part of my life for 13 years. From some bad Augie teams to some bad Charlie strong teams to some average Herman teams. Now we're here in the heights of the. The Steve Sarkeesian era. Lots of aspirations this year for the team, and I'm excited to. To watch it. But long time, longest relationship of my life. And I remember, let's see that 2010 red Explorer driving back on 71. What was it in December or January of 2016? Be like, hey, you need somebody full time in Austin. And it only grew from there to where it's at today. So a lot of. A lot of fun over these years, Eric.
C
Yeah, well, you know, I just want to say thank you for everything you've done. The reliability, loyalty, initiative, the hard work. Just the friendship, too. You know, I'm gonna miss you personally as much as professionally. You know, you. You've done so much work that I don't think the common person sees. They see your forward stuff on. On video and articles, but not the behind the scenes. And it's. It's going to be a challenge overcoming all the. All the losses.
B
The.
C
The personal one, too, man. Interacting with you on a daily basis was. Was. But I'm very excited and I'm very impressed for what you have next. That is not a decision many people in your shoes would make, and I'm totally impressed by it. And now speaking of Tom Herman, you can go finish that round of golf that you were playing when he got fired.
B
Oh, man. Yeah. Last five holes at Lions, and like I. I've told our friend Sneezy Beltron, who, you know, who you are, I'm like, I'm not dying. I'm still going to be around. You may see me pop in from time to time if I get the itch. I'll call you. Or I'll call Homer or I'll call Justin. But make sure you do go to Inside Texas because it's still going to be the place to be. Perfect time to sign up for an annual membership right now. Get that full fiscal year of Texas football coverage. Use that first link in our description or use that QR code at the top left of the screen. Join for a dollar, then 50 off your first year. And of course, there it is. Go get Paul Waddlington's Thinking Texas Football. All those links. Whether you want a E version, go through Smashwords. You can get a physical copy via Amazon. Go by the Longhorn Football Prospectus, a look at every single opponent, every position overview of college football. And Eric, you still got the the recruiting insight insert that you've been doing for the past few years on this.
C
That's. That didn't make the cut. No, we didn't do that this year. Everybody was super busy and it just didn't come down to it. Hey, that was probably the longest preamble we've ever had before getting into the news of a show. So I do apologize, but it is very special circumstances with it being Joe's last day. Joe, everybody's gonna ask you in the comments where you're going and I just want to say he is not going to a competitor. Don't. Yep, he wouldn't be on this show if that was the case and I wouldn't be wishing him good luck in his new challenge.
B
And I never thought to do it anyway, so that was never, never an option. Shall we talk about sleeping arrangements? Texas starts fall. You almost got me to say it. Texas starts preseason camp next week and it is going to be the classic training camp. No regular students are on campus quite yet. I guess class doesn't start till the week before Labor Day. So the dorms, Sanjak and all the others are going to get a healthy workout and going to be some interesting pairings as well as Texas gets up, gets after it on the football field.
C
Yeah, well, they're in the dorms just for the first week, I think get acclimated to camp and just get in a good, solid, structured routine. But you know, Sark's emphasis has been on team building all off season. It feels like that slipped in in previous the previous year. And so part of culture building is he wants offensive guys rooming with the defensive guy. You know, you kind of the football teams can be just like the rest of society, somewhat cliquish position group guys kind of stay within their position a lot. And then certainly offensive guys tend to hang out with offensive guys. But that's. That's not going to be the case in the dorm room. You know, like Arch Manning is. Is going to be rooming with Bo Masco, which I think says a lot about Bo Masco. Right. They're not just going to put Arch with anybody. And then one of the best rivalries throughout spring football that we chronicled was Kate Phillips versus Cam Coleman. I think those two are going to be rooming to each rooming with each other. So I wonder what those conversations are going to be like in those rooms. But I think Sark's got a good plan. I think. I think that adds a little spice to. To. To fall camp where these guys are. Preseason camp where these guys are going to be competing on the field, yet spending time together in their dorms and shooting the breeze.
B
You talked a little bit as well about some of the defensive schematics that might be available to. To Will Muschamp this year. And I, when I read through your notes, I always think of Steve Sarkeesian talking about advantage throws. And that's kind of what he uses to describe RPOs. Like, oh, is it three versus two over here?
C
Yeah.
B
Or is it six on five right here? And in his own similar way, sounds like Will Muschamp's trying to do the same thing. And that asks the defensive line to maybe change up what they've been doing compared to some previous seasons.
C
Yeah. As it was told, you know, to me was, you know, they're looking to attack attack gaps rather than defending gaps, which sounds really good. Everybody wants to hear about attacking defenses, but this isn't meant to turn guys into Byron Murphy, getting them up field and, and you know, creating big production. Individually, they're looking at this as a way to create opportunities for other defenders, you know, notably the linebackers. So if they can get three, three on two advantages, somebody's going to have to demand double teams up front. And that'll open up opportunity for Rasheen Biles, who obviously has an amazing fit for this defense, and then also Juice Cryer. So they want that three on two advantage up front. They're always going to bring five. That that extra guy is coming from somewhere. It's up to that. That coordinate offensive coordinator and quarterback to figure out where that is. But it's up to the defense to make it hard for them to stop no matter what. But a big part of this is the defensive tackles. They preach selflessness. Throughout the spring, we talk this is where we heard most about Murad Watson taking this step up is just working really hard and those guys are going to get tired. Well, must Champ feels okay about that because they've got so many defensive tackles they can rotate. So I think this is one of the hidden advantages for Texas this year is that defensive tackle depth. But it might not manifest in individual production. Do you want to talk about the safeties yet or should we just, you know, where are you going next?
B
I was going to say that dirty work may allow for a couple other players to really, really shine this year. And you, you drew some comparisons. It says for some second and third level players to some Georgia defenses, for some standout guys that might allow. I'll let you take it away. But Rashin Biles and Jelani McDonald to really excel this season.
C
Yeah, if Biles is getting up field and, and blitzing and you know, trying to create havoc, you still have to watch out for a leaky run and that's where the safeties come in. If you look at Georgia a couple years ago they had Malachi Starks led the team in tackles and then last year KJ Bolden was second. So you that, that automatically tells you what they're doing on scheme. Otherwise, if your safety is second on tackles, you either have a good defense that's dedicated to stopping the run and, and well coached or you have a really terrible defense and they're making tackles way. You know, we had a couple years where Dylan Haynes was, was had a lot of tackles and he had too many tackles. Right. But this is not that case. So Jelani is kind of a replacement defender. But also Derrick Williams is really good at that as well and so expect a lot of production from the safeties. There's, there's some other ski scheme stuff I'm holding on to now. I want to see, you know, hear a little bit more about August and see what, what we can reveal and what's too revealing. Obviously I'm not sharing anything that, that isn't commonly known by watching the tape. But fans aren't watching the tape, you know, like the opponents are.
B
We'll also get a good understanding once helmets and shoulder pads come back gone because that's where you know, all these things that this all does matter. This all does really show, you know, who's taking summer seriously and making the most of it. But this is the, the helmet and shoulder pad part is the real proving ground and that's what we're excited to see. So before we keep going, let's hear a Word from Andre the Lawyer.
D
Texans know when you're injured, there's one name that gets results. Andre the Lawyer Trust the team that has secured millions for their clients and helped thousands of Texans win their injury cases. Car wrecks, slip and falls, 18 wheeler. Accidents on the job, injuries, wrongful deaths. Don't let the insurance companies tell you what your claim is worth. Andre the Lawyer will fight for you. His principal office is in Dallas, but they serve Texans throughout the state, so don't wait. Call 214-444-8808. That's 214-444-8808. Contact info is in the description.
B
I don't think I can reveal his handle, but one of the more entertaining handles on on Inside Texas belongs to our friend Andre. Lots of good.
C
Hey, I've got no problem sharing that. Hell, I gave him that handle. He was dating my sister at the time.
B
He was dating my sister at the
C
time and he was pre law and so I gave him the name Future in Law. And I said, this is going to work out one way for you, buddy. And I know which way it's going to be because my sister, you know, she kind of, she tossed him out pretty quick. Not him necessarily, just in general. But yeah, future in Law. It's a great handle. And also he's a great lawyer and, and he's a very good friend at this point. My, my sister laughs that we're, we became such good friends. She's married with kids, he's married with kids.
B
So never know what doors will be open. But let's go over the offense and you kind of played a little bit of a grab bag, but you play a game. I like to play like after games and I guess after the summer is a good time to do it. It's like who, who played good? You know, I like that pretty simple way of looking at things. We'll start in the quarterback room. We, we always kind of know what Arch Manning's doing, but the guys behind him had great summers too.
C
Yeah, I hate quarterbacks. Well, first of all, this is a necessary thing to cover already I think because it's going to play out well into the future, especially if Arch leaves after this year. We're just monitoring development again. We don't care who starts ever. We're just monitoring development. And KJ is a good quarterback right now. But dia, interestingly enough, is probably ahead of the pace that KJ was on this time last year. So it makes for a very interesting situation where Lacy is the backup and will be the backup. But Diabell is just, you know, got some stuff that very few quarterbacks have now. First thing that stands out with, with DIA is the, the mental maturity. You got the good parts of that from, from his father, but also a lot of the, you know, a lot of the celebrity kids in high school ranks, you know, especially if their parents were a professional athlete, they're, they're a lot more insulated. They don't, they're not people people. They're not. They're pampered to some degree. They're stuck up a lot of times. And we've seen that with a recent quarterback, I think, that played in the Big 12. That's not Diabell. He's the man of the people. He's a very similar arch from that. Very measured, level headed. He kind of understands what living with high expectations is like already. KJ has a lot of great traits as well, but it's, it's. DIA is just kind of advanced in that regard for his age Now. When I wanted to, when I first asked about DIA's, you know, ability, the guy switched right back over to KJ because he's a fan of him as well and said KJ is great at fitting in tight spaces, throwing over the middle, challenging over the middle, tight windows, threading between defenders, all that which to me speaks to his confidence and accuracy. You know, a lot of quarterbacks, that's where you've seen a lot of quarterbacks be very successful in college, but they're not going to be successful in the NFL unless they're thrown over the middle. You've got to throw over the middle. It's a lot more dangerous than throwing outside. However, Bell has the throws that very few can make on the deep hash, those sort of NFL throws that get everybody excited about both throw a good deep ball. And KJ's arm is livelier than people think upon seeing him, given his size. So that one's going to be. It just looks like Texas in a very good spot for 2027, no matter what happens. And I think they're in a good spot in 2026 because of KJ, if
B
he's needed as far as wide receivers go. And those freshman wide receivers, everyone has seemingly kind of taken a, a turn in the spotlight or turn to get praised by sources. Jermaine Bishop, obviously he's gotten a lot of hype. Cohen Brown and his speed was praised over the course of the summer, but now it's Chris Stewart's turn after he had a pretty solid summer as well.
C
Yeah, one of the better wide receiver freshman summers we've heard about in a long time. Obviously nobody's ever going to compare to Xavier Worthy again, but I don't think hopefully nobody ever has that opportunity again as a true freshman wide receiver, you know, and we did hear good things about Cohen Brown and the information on Jermaine at wide receiver is obviously muted because he's been playing cornerback. But, you know, that's going to change. And I've got a good note on Cohen Brown tomorrow when we talk about special teams. But Chris Stewart had a very good off season summertime in seven on seven. He was a little hampered during spring ball, but he's just got really good ball skills. Savvy, good route runner, smart route runner and better speed than people give him credit for. Actually, it was his speed on tape that first caught my attention years ago. So that's, you know, speed is not, not a problem with him. He's a good player. People were, you know, I think, kind of really excited about Jermaine Bishop. He flew under the radar. Some fans were, you know, fans were talking like maybe Texas should cut bait. Josh Hypo was after him. Josh Hypo, last I know, last I heard, Josh Hypo wasn't in the business of taking slow wide receivers. So very excited about Chris Stewart. Obviously the expectation for this year aren't that high, but. But tuck his name away. He's going to be a good player.
B
We'll stay in the the past catching ranks and go to tight end. Kind of a lot of things going on here, but one of the more important positions in this offense is the tight end that's on the field in 11 personnel. And it may be a little bit of a split. There will be some different allocations of snaps at that role, but at least at this point in the summer and ahead of preseason camp, there's one guy who's got his name. What penciled in at the top of the list. How would you describe it?
C
Yeah, I think penciled in is pretty good. Nick Townsend, he's, he's the most talented tight end on the roster. I don't, I don't think there's any question about that. I, I like in his game and I'm not saying he's going to become this guy because he's one of the best Titans of all time, but I like in his game to George Kittle where he, you know, he's got the ferocity to block and he's also a good athlete. Good, good blocker out in space as well. If you need it, but also ability after the catch. But, you know, Nick is still putting it together. You know, he didn't have four years at Iowa yet, so he's, he's still developing. Pretty much the thing that's holding them up is just consistency as a blocker. And it's not a want to or physicality thing. It's just technique. He didn't, wasn't asked to block Nick. Nick was the jumbo athlete that just went out there and got to be an athlete. In high school, they'd play him on defense, they play him on offense, move around, get the ball in his hands. Played some wildcat quarterback, that sort of thing. He wasn't lining up, using his hands on every play, fighting for position and all that. So that's, that's kind of the growth curve right now. But he is probably the first team tight end in 11 personnel. But it depends on what Sark wants to do. You know, if they come out against Ohio State dead set on running the ball, you might see Spencer Shannon. They are interchangeable and Shannon has proven to be a capable receiver. You know, a lot of times those two are going to pair, obviously with Shannon as the inline tight end and Nick Townsend as the sort of flex tight end, h back. So I, you know, I, I think the tight end is going to round into form. I think we talked about this on the Q and A on Wednesday, but it might not be great out of the gates. It might be a little bit of a work in progress, but Jeff Banks is going to have to get them up to speed. Just like he's going to have to get that special teams up to speed that I'm going to talk about tomorrow.
B
As far as Amari Winston goes, you know, someone who had it, it sounded like last year there was always like little blips of like, whoa, that was really good. And then we wouldn't hear from him behind the scenes again for a while. We didn't see him play that much. Is that going to be a little bit different this year?
C
Well, he had a good off season, especially spring, but he got hurt in the summer and this was right at the time that Nick Townsend arrived on campus. So he had really unfortunate timing there. He's probably the best route runner. And you know, when I say that, I don't mean it necessarily from an athletic standpoint. I mean from the savviness, the, the matching his route to what the defense is showing, you know, finding the soft spots in zone. He's very good at that. Him and Arch Have a good rapport, arch arches like used him a lot in short yard situations to move the sticks or in the red zone. And he's got exceptional hands. He's got some of the best hands on the team regardless of position. So he's having a good off season as well. Good summer and you know, I'll tell you what, same source that said was a little lukewarm on him a couple months ago as far as playing time for this season is saying he's definitely going to play this year.
B
We'll stay on offense for one last look and that's at the offensive line and there are a couple names that really popped. It sounded like as having good summers. One of them, one of them was a little more household than the other but it's, it's a little bit. It's good to see that there was development up and down the depth chart.
C
Yeah, Goosebies the household name already. But you know he's got the chance to double his starts this season if they have a good year. So what's he going to become in start number 29 versus what he's going to be in start number 16. You know so I, you know Paul laid it out the other day about you know, the growth curve is still there, there's still a lot of room for him and you know he's in the best physical, athletic shape of his life. You know one of source say looks like he could do a backflip which is hyperbole. But you know he is a basketball athlete and so he's, he's got some uncommon stuff going on there. I expect added bulk and strength in the run game. Probably that's the most exciting thing I am to see about him. And then also Devin Coleman, you know Devin Coleman and Jordan Coleman's going to be a good player too. They really like him. But I think Devin Coleman just the side, just the fact that there's more opportunity at left guard, you know Jordan Coleman's not going to start right. So Devin Coleman has been practicing like he's got a chance to start and fight for that starting left guard spot. Now it's going to be Lawrence Seymour in almost all certainty. But Coleman is big, physical and athletic. Got a nasty mindset and I think you know another guy, maybe not for this year, perhaps he can become depth. They're still looking for that 89 guy but I think he's got a bright future and even a chance to start in following season.
B
Gonna be fun to track all those guys. Big year for Kyle Flood and the Offensive line seems to be the, the. The linch point on. On which a lot of the. The offense is depending on. Even with a lot of great skill talent like Archman and Cam Coleman, Ray Lake Brown, Hollywood Smothers and everybody else.
C
And then. Right. I mean, that's a long list. That's right. Just the offensive line just do its job. Look at all those guys that need to take advantage of it.
B
And there's going to be some players watching what that offensive line does. I'll throw one quick recruiting thing at you because tomorrow we're expecting a decision. I think Landon Williams, callous, who it's still crazy to me to say this, the highest ranked uncommitted prospect in the country. I think he's the only top 100 prospect not committed. Maybe even like one of two in the top 150. And actually I think Notre Dame picked up the other one. So maybe the only top 150 uncommitted prospect. Missouri, SMU, Texas, Texas a M and U of H for Landon Williams. Callous. This one is looking like one where Longhorn fans should be tuning in, correct, Derek?
C
Yeah. And you know, if you say he's the highest one, the uncommitted, you got to throw his ranking in there. I think he, what is he, 39 or 40 somewhere in there? So he's, you know, he's, he's a borderline elite. We think he's elite. He would definitely add something to the, to the room and you know, Hollywood Smothers and relief Brown. There's a good chance both are gone after this season. So there's immediate playing time. We do like Texas's chances, however, we're still, you know, we're still making our checks. Texas is still making, making their checks on it. A M Still trying hard. You know, I think we've heard different things about SMU, MO in the past. We still feel good about Texas, but shoot, man, it's. It's a very competitive recruitment. And when you come from, you know, when you come from behind, like, like Texas has, you know, you just never know because that, you know, the longer you lead, the more confident you have. If this, this lead is somewhat new that Texas has had in the recent last two or three months, maybe it's a little bit. It's a little bit trickier to get over the line. But we like where Texas is at. They still got to get it done though.
B
We know that there's going to be a recruiting or an announcement on another channel. The pick is Texas. Make sure you come back Here, make sure you go to Inside Texas, join for just $1, then get 50% off your first year. Is that first link in the description? Use that QR code at the top left of the screen. Again, great time. If you join right now, you'll get the preseason camp, the season, the portal recruiting, basketball season, baseball season, basketball recruiting and Then next the 2027 or no would that be the 2028 cycles official visit season. So now's a great time to join, get involved with Inside Texas and go by thinking Texas football. That's Paul Wadlington's Longhorn Football Prospectus. Every opponent, every player on the team, a look at college football. The best way to preview the season ahead. All right, Eric, insight. We've gone inside the program. Been doing this for I don't know, 13 years. Where, where did I meet you? Was it at Ables on the lake which is unfortunately no longer there anymore?
C
That sounds about right. Yeah. You were interning and you know, I didn't know anything about my interest in baseball then is the same as it is now. So I'm like who's this guy? But then I started, we started using you more dynamically on stuff that people were following a little bit harder and you know, I'm like well who's this guy? You really caught my attention and then I was kind of running the day to day then and you know, went to the owner and said hey, this guy's graduating college, need to hire him. And they, you know, gratefully they did. It was a no brainer, Joe. You made it impossible. And I tell, I tell perspective interns now talking to one currently. I said look man, Joe Cook was an intern, Evan Veith was an intern. If you come in and do work, make me hire you. And that's what you did. And then, and then some. You know, I'm a little upset we're not going to grow old together professionally but, but we still can personally.
B
I know we will. So thank you Eric. It's been, I remember, what was it April 2016 when I signed the contract and I think I sent it into to Clendon and Michael Pearl's address. So lots of, lots of stuff's happened since then and it's all been, all been a lot of fun. So thank you and thank everybody for watching. Thanks everybody for reading again. I'm not dying so you may still see me pop up on here in a game thread because now I can become game thread man. And I don't know if you're ready for that. So no thank you all so much. Thank you all for watching. Hey, also, we're excited for what's next with Evan, with you, with Justin, with Tyler. I can't wait to see what Tyler does on this beat because we got to watch him from afar at Notre Dame. We know a lot of people who cover Notre Dame and a lot of great reviews, so I'm excited to see what he does. Thank you all for watching and see y' all next week on Inside the Program.
