We're here with bossman Eric Naleen to do inside the program and get into some camp notes from what we've seen over the last couple of days. Didn't get too much time in there with with practice and as far as being able to watch but hey, appreciate what you get right? Let's start with maybe the the big headliner. I feel like everybody was talking about one particular name that several names are being mentioned of course, but one maybe more than others. That's Justice Terry. Man. You talk about the second year player out of Georgia. Is the light really coming off from Justice? What is Inside Texas heard?

[Eric Naleen]

Yeah, you know, hero hero Canoe broke contain on the Justice Terry story. Now it's, now everybody's talking about it. Obviously we were hearing things. We got one subscriber that's an insider that has been really singing Terry's praises all off season and he's, he's being shown to be right now. We said good things as well but we wanted some evidence from the field now even though we weren't able to see it, you know, as they cut they kicked us off the field after about 15 minutes. Again, we're thankful for whatever we get. That's not a problem. But we want to know behind the scenes what's actually happening. And you know, a lot of what he's doing is just really being disruptive. We know that Muschamp likes to deploy twists and stunts and Justice Terry was built in a lab to do that because he's so physical at the point of attack. But he gets moving so quick. You know, if, if you just turn your head for one brief second, he's going to be around the corner and after that quarterback, and that's what he's doing. Now, here's context. I, I was a little bit worried when I heard he had two sacks. You got to find out why he had two sacks if he's just beating people one on one. That's a little more concerning because there's not much you can do about that. But if it's stunts, twists, you can, you can, you can fix that with more reps, more cohesion. And as we know, offensive line cohesion was a big question mark coming in. You expect that them to have that figured out after two practices. And I think it might have played a part in a while. You know, we had Jaden Chapman with the ones on the first day and Dylan Sikorski with the ones on the second day at left guard.

[Cordy (Host)]

I mean, of course, that's going to be everybody's next question over on inside Texas. Well, Justice Terry's got a couple of sacks. What does that mean for the offensive line? What, what notes or tidbits have you heard regarding those guys, other than, you know, Chapman and Sikorski and where they were at?

[Eric Naleen]

You know, we're always trying to. We're always trying to diagnose zero sum. You know, if Terry's balling, does that mean the offensive line is terrible? Or, you know, does that mean that he's just that good? I do think he's that good. He's that talented, for sure. Maybe not quite that good yet. His technique's coming around. But, yeah, again, like we said, it's. It's more about stunt issues, you know, and cohesion is what we knew was the problem coming in. You know, we were actually hearing good things about Conor Robertson. That might be a bit of a paradox to some, but, you know, there's a very good possibility he's calling out the stunt. There's just nothing anybody can do about it. He's actually tougher at the point of attack, gotten a little stronger, and got a lot more attitude this year. I think he's got more confidence. He's, he's. He's kind of grown into his role as a leader in that offensive line. And the offensive line is feeding off his. His toughness, his griminess, as it was put it put towards me. And then, of course, you know, we got to see Melvin Siani firsthand. He looks like a million bucks and, you know, probably the best run blocker of the unit, Trevor Goosby looks like whatever they pay the number 10 overall pick, you know, they're, I think they're going to be fine. They do need some time and you know, justice Terry, that's as I said in the, as I said in the article, he's a good die test for what's wrong with this offensive line. He's going to go, he's going to show the point of failure which apparently still seems like left guard but again we knew that Cole Hudson's back. Maybe he helps. You got Lawrence Seymour, we haven't really heard much about him yet. There's time to figure it out. We're only two practices in.

[Cordy (Host)]

Yeah, that's well said. And I mean as far as what would your plan be? You know, are you going to just throw depth of that position to see what sticks? Do you think they have a particular guy in mind that position or how do you think that all shapes out at lift guard?

[Eric Naleen]

My approach, my approach is always to throw everybody at it at first and see who shows the most promise. And then you start, you start whittling down the reps by who shows the most promise. And then at some point, you know, and not too long, maybe after next week, you've got to, you've got to figure out which guy you're going to go with and then you have to spend a lot of time coaching that guy up. There's going to be a scrimmage, not this Saturday, but next Saturday. Use that to figure out your last couple options and then you really got to pick somebody and hone in on him and coach him up. But again, with Cole Hudson coming back, you can always resort to that if you have to. I would, you know, I would, I would lean on that later in the process if they need to. Right now I'm looking at Sikorsky, how does he do? And of course Lawrence Seymour, who they invested in. You know, he'll get a good shot. We're going to hear a lot about him as, as practice wears on.

[Cordy (Host)]

Well said, like minded there. I'd like, I'd like early on at least throw a lot of numbers there and see. See. Exactly. It's feeling good about it or who you're feeling good about rather. Let's talk about, you know, traditionally this time of year the defenses are always ahead of offense. I can't remember a report on Inside Texas since I've been around where an offense was even really on par with the defense. But it seems like that might be the case early on for Texas or two practices. How's the offense competing with the defense?

[Eric Naleen]

Yeah, there was an Outlier year where the offense was better than the defense. I think that was when Sam Ellinger was quarterback and you know that guy was. How far is the offense going to fall is pretty simple. It leans on Sam's shoulders. You could hear a ball in practice. There were some years where, where Sam had the offense ahead of the defense and probably one of those years the Todd Orlando was about, about to get fired. But it is rare as you said, it's rare and I'm not saying they're even. It's a small sample size but so far they're, they're given as as much as they're taking. You know we've got some other players I think we're going to talk about on the defense still that, that have made some Coleman. If you got arch to Cam Coleman obviously the offense can only fall so far, right? I mean it's, they can only be so far behind the, the defense when you have that connection. And Cam Coleman had two touchdowns on Friday. One and seven on seven and one in team. And then he also had a one handed catch on an over route which if it's a one handed catch to Cam Coleman it probably wasn't the most accurate pass of all time. Right. Because he can go up and get it but, but you like to hear that he could come down with it and in making those plays and, and you didn't really see Cam Coleman making running routes like that at Auburn. As we've been talking about the full route tree is available to him. So I'm excited to hear about him. But he's doing well. Hollywood Smothers had some good runs on on Friday which I don't care as much about hearing about Hollywood Smothers. I care that hey man, the offensive line is creating some running lanes so it's not all bad.

[Cordy (Host)]

I will laugh, man. I posted the clip of Cam Coleman just running a, you know a skinny post yesterday and one of the first comments was never saw him run that route at Auburn.

[Eric Naleen]

And yeah, if you watch his highlights he's just running straight verticals from the sideline down the field and he either catches the ball and falls down or he scores a touchdown. This it's gonna, we're gonna see a whole different Cam Coleman yards after catch. As we noted, he only had 12.6 yards per catch last year which is unfathomable. He's one of the fastest guys on the team. He's one of the best route runners on the team. He can jump out of the gym, he can make acrobatic catches and this guy only had 12 yards per catch last year. It's criminal.

[Cordy (Host)]

Hey, you talk about a one handed catch with Cam Coleman might be a little bit different than others. I kept that catch radius is very, very special. So excited to see that.

[Eric Naleen]

Which means it doesn't have, you know, when people were talking about him going to A M potentially, I said, man, Marcel Reed doesn't have to get any more accurate to still be, you know, to still get better. But you know, our chat is accuracy issues too. So pot shouldn't call the kettle right.

[Cordy (Host)]

And real quick, speaking of Marcel Reed, you posted the the highlight of Justice Terry really impacting that Michael Taft interception of Marcel Reed. Obviously Cam Coleman tearing it up a little bit. He's doing that against a pretty good secondary. My man. Hey, Cade Phillips, Garrison Littleton, Wardell Mack, we talked about them having, you know, interceptions yesterday. What can you say about the Texas secondary? Anything different from day two that you've heard?

[Eric Naleen]

Yeah, well, Cade's interception came yesterday on Friday, which is interesting because him and Coleman are dorm mates right now for this first week of spring. So there or August camp. I keep reverting back to spring ball. Thankfully it's not spring outside of the weather. I'm really happy to be at this part of the calendar. But Kate had a pick and him and him and Coleman have had a good give and take all off season. Of course, Coleman had a good give and take with Bo Masco as well. But must champ, must champ really preaches interceptions. And you know, it's like, it's, it's like life or death to him. That and team run, team run defense, those are the two things he preaches the hardest. You know, Kate Phillips has good ball skills, length and all that, everything you want in a cornerback. Grayson, Littleton, that interception that he had was a tip ball that he tipped himself, went and got. I think we saw a video of that. Texas tweeted that out. But his DB sounds like they're making plays. Of course, there's always that other side of it. You know, if they're Throwing interceptions, if they're cash interceptions. Who threw it? I'm not going to really get into the, the who threw the picks yet until it gets, you know, we get to a better sample size. And another thing to note is that, you know, you can't really, there's no depth chart right now. Rotations. Grayson, Littleton could be out there with a third team or it could be out there with the first team. So, you know, try not to read too much into that.

[Cordy (Host)]

Yeah. So you're not going to take too, too much from, you know, what you're seeing as far as who is where and what pecking order that is so far through two days.

[Eric Naleen]

Eric no, they're good. The coaches are given a chance. They tell all these guys to work hard. You're going to get an opportunity and you've got to deliver on that opportunity in, in August camp. And so there's, there's a lot of guys with the sort of talent to disrupt their preconceived notions, you know, Justice Terry we didn't know where to put him on the depth chart coming in. He's one of the few guys I didn't know exactly where to put. Obviously he's, he could play four eye. He's making his plays the defensive tackle where they like to run those stunts a lot. But we didn't really know where to slot him. A lot of guys just have so much talent that they could disrupt. You know, Jonah Williams is another one. You know, Cohen Brown has had some really good practices. Maybe he forces his way on the field. Jermaine Bishop is back at wide receiver and we saw him taking some reps at slot. They love, they love Emmett Mosley, they love Dalen McCutcheon. But maybe Jermaine Bishop, because he's got that X factor sort of talent, maybe he makes some noise and they got to find room for him.

[Cordy (Host)]

You know. Again, I feel like everybody's going to have an eye on Jermaine Bishop early on. So of course of the readers over there inside Texas want to know about him. I saw him fielding a few punts yesterday, of course, with Ryan Niblet and Dayday McCutcheon. You know, if it's you, Eric, you know, you given you giving Jermaine a little bit of look at put return early in the season, given what nible it did last year and the fact that he probably has could be a little bit bigger, stronger, faster than a year ago. I mean, it's tough because Jermaine is so talented.

[Eric Naleen]

Man, I'm giving, I'm giving Bishop some return opportunities in non conference. No doubt about it. You know, Texas state, UTs, maybe not Ohio State. All right, not all, not all in on con. But yeah, you want to, you know, punt. Punt's a tough position because you can't play it until they trust you. But you can't earn trust until you play it. You know, it's kind of a catch 22. So give him some chance to feel punts. Let's see his decision making. Let him make a mistake or two and, and correct it on tape. But ob you know, Ryan Niblet your guy, but you, you, you know, you want to have the ability to put Jermaine Bishop back there as well. But yeah, Jermaine's back at wide receiver and got a little bit of rust, as you'd expect. He's been playing in reverse all, all, just all of all summer with, you know, playing cornerback. So now he's got to play forward again, knock off a little rust. But he's got all the twitch in the world and athleticism and wide receiver skill. It'll come back to him quickly. But I really liked hearing that he's in the slot because, you know, Ryan Wingo's playing outside, Cam Coleman's playing outside.

[Cordy (Host)]

Right.

[Eric Naleen]

You know it. And if you, if you're, if you're banging on offenses with Emmett Mosley, who's a really good physical player and he brings a certain element to it, and then you throw in a guy like Jer Bishop who brings the whole different athletic profile to the position. That's a tough change up for a defense to handle on the fly.

[Cordy (Host)]

There's a lot of, a lot of pieces and a lot of skill sets in that wide receiver room for Sark to work with. And again, of course, you got to push the buttons correctly. But one last thing, Eric. You know, you talked a little bit earlier about Hollywood Smothers, a new name to the Texas roster, having some good runs. Anything else on the Texas running back? Again, a room full of new faces there. Maybe some of the schemes or concepts that they're working on earlier.

[Eric Naleen]

Well, we know it's a lot of outside zone, inside zone, and some split zone. You know, they really, they ran split zone a lot. I think it, you know, they've got the tight ends to kind of do whatever they want, at least within reason. But yeah, I really like what I saw from Derek Cooper. He was, you know, in high school, after junior tape, I thought he was more of a cut and go straight line guy, and he is that too. But he also has more wiggle than I thought. When you see these longer, taller, muscled up guys, they don't always have a whole lot of wiggle. Trent Richardson is the most obvious fact. He was built a little bit different. He was super muscular, but he had no hips at all. He was, he. Luckily he had good feet. That's the thing that saved him. But a lot of those bigger guys tend to be stiff and more straight line. Cooper has a lot of wiggle for, for that build. He's, he's, he's downright special when you watch him carry the ball. And I thought Ryan Niblett, from what I saw, look more like a, more like a shifty running back than what we'd seen before. You know, a lot of times He's a, he's 100 meter sprinter out on the field, but he was showing some shiftiness in drills that, you know, I'm not sure that I saw last year.

[Cordy (Host)]

I'd agree with you on both. I thought Cooper has exceeded my expectations so far from just an athleticism standpoint. I mean, he's built like a rock. Definitely excited to see what he, he does through, you know, early in the year, but sure, I think he really helped his team later in the year. Anything else, Eric? I mean, it was kind of all over the place. Two days we're bouncing around. Like you said, we only had about 15, 20 minutes each day getting what we can. Any final thoughts?

[Eric Naleen]

Oh, man, I don't care about the 15 minutes I get. You know, we care about the word, you know, the. We see what the coaches want us to see. You know. Yeah, I, I don't care about that. I don't need, I don't, you know, the availabilities are fun. You do want to see. I do like to see firsthand who looks physically more impressive. You know, it's good to see Melvin Ciani, you know, Michael Terry, you know, everybody always asks about him. I hope the guy finds a home somewhere because he is a big, physical, athletic, he can move. You know, it's, it's just, I love seeing the guys up close and. But, you know, we see what they want us to see. I'm more focused on, hey, what can we glean from the, from the practices? They don't practice again until tonight and there's no media availability. So if you want information, I know where to go.
