Tex Homer
Good morning everybody. Welcome to it live. I'm Tex Homer, joined by Eric Naleen and Coach Dub, and we have SEC Media days that's starting today, but also fall camp's coming up and so we want to talk about the major things that we have learned before then. And we got a couple other topics coming at you as well. Head over to Inside Texas, join for $1, then 50 off your first year link in the description down below. I really like this article, Eric. I just, I don't know, I like the structure of just 2020 things. Here you go man. It was a nice piece and we'll talk through it in anticipation because you can feel it in the air. The first thing that you point out that we learned in the off season from your intel is Sark is a man on fire. So kind of a depressing off season last year, right? Didn't go exactly according to plan and I think we saw it in the season that appears to be very different this off season Eric.
Eric Naleen
I mean, night and day. Well, I mean, that's what, you know, failure. I don't want to say a 10 and 3. It's not ultimate failure. It's. They didn't reach expectations.
Tex Homer
We didn't maximize.
Eric Naleen
Right, Right. Yeah. So it's not a complete failure. I mean, we talked about how. Jesus, 10 and 3 is a bad season. Starkey's already done a big part of his job. Right. You know, he's got to win a national championship. But expectations are so high right now that 10 and 3 is a disappointment. Think about how far we moved we are from 2015. I was just talking to a former beat writer or beatriner in a different school now, but he was in the same car with our Joe Cook after the loss to Kansas in. What was that? 2016, 2015. So, I mean, there's just. We're a long way from the. The lost decade. So, first of all, it's not. It's not a total failure, but it was disappointing. And I think that disappointment reinvigorated him, and it also highlighted a lot of things that need to be fixed. And he fixed a lot of things that we weren't expecting, and he fixed a lot of things that fans were expecting. And, you know, the one that went unchecked is Kyle Flood, I guess. But there, you know, we went over that for, you know, a lot. Many times. There's just a lot of trust between those two and. But other than offensive line, and they did address that pretty aggressively through the portal, you know, this is a pretty revamped team. He has been on fire since that a. M. Game. Yep.
Tex Homer
Hopefully Sark goes on his own odyssey this year and Wednesday, I thought last week, it's a good movie. You should go watch it.
Eric Naleen
Everybody's. I'm looking at the. The movie thread. We have a movie thread that has about 8 comments on it, and everybody's saying it's a really good movie. So maybe I'll check it out. I've been a little apprehensive.
Tex Homer
No, it was good.
Eric Naleen
They did a good job with.
Tex Homer
Was not.
Eric Naleen
Well, that guy doesn't half ass anything, so.
Tex Homer
Well, that's my whole thing is like, guys, it's Nolan. He's not gonna do this, like, cynical version of it. All those fears were kind of silly in the first place already about Hudson. Question about Hudson. Is it a bad omen that he's trying to gain eligibility? Does that look bad for our offensive line if he's trying to play another year?
Eric Naleen
No, I know this is just a guy Chasing his best incentives right now. He could go get, you know, 150, 000 or whatever.
Coach Dub
I don.
Eric Naleen
Not a lot, but definitely something. Or go into the. The business world or maybe even get a shot at, who knows, playing, playing CFL or arena or something. I don't know. But no, he's just chasing his best incentives. Texas will take him because there's room on the roster. He already knows the playbook inside and out is better, better than anybody. He's just a emergency. He'd be an emergency pick. He would not start in any way. So I think they're just following their best incentives, the Hudson camp, and waiting to see what. What comes of. But everybody's trying to break that dam of having eligibility for one more year. You know, I don't think it's going to work necessarily, but I don't. It's not inter. It's not intertwined to their expectations for the offensive line. We wrote about it, hell, in this very article, before we even knew about the Hudson thing. That, that. That they feel good about the O line. You know, they. No fans are going to feel good about it until they see it with their own eyes. But internally they feel good about the offensive line.
Tex Homer
Yeah, the fear from the fans is that what happened was they saw Lawrence Seymour not even in pads, I guess, just running, and then they were like, Hudson, get back. And I, I don't think that is what occurred.
Coach Dub
No, definitely. And it never hurts to have insurance from a veteran like that who's played a ton of snaps and started for you as a freshman. Like, who's going to complain about that? And I don't blame Hudson for trying either.
Tex Homer
Yeah, I don't. I'm not mad at Hudson. I do not like that we have a system that you can go to minicamp and then just turn around and go back. I would be okay with it. There's a part of me that thinks you should be able to go to the draft, see where you end up, and then come back if you want. But that's not the rule. Or is it the rule? Who knows what the rules are anymore? But I do not like a system that incentivizes that. But I'm not mad at Hudson for trying it. And to have a solid guy like that that's older, knows what's going on, I think that's important. There's no such thing as too much depth. I agree.
Eric Naleen
All right.
Tex Homer
See it in that. I did not see it in imax and I got bummed out when I saw people took picture by picture differences. And I was like, oh, no, I'm missing like half the screen. That was a bummer.
Coach Dub
Sorry.
Tex Homer
Eric. Continue with Texas football.
Eric Naleen
I mean, yeah, Cole Hudson would be like another. Having another coach or quality. Quality. What do they call it? Quality assurance. No, not quality insurance.
Tex Homer
Quality control.
Eric Naleen
Quality control guy.
Coach Dub
I don't know.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, quality control in the, in the room. So, yeah, veterans experience. That'd be, you know, there's no, there's no downside to it. You already know what you're going to get. And the guys spend a lot of time. Spent four full years in the program.
Coach Dub
Right.
Eric Naleen
Yeah.
Tex Homer
The down. The fear is that he's being asked back because we're like, oh God, we need a starting left guard. If that's not the case, which is not, then wonderful. Something that you add on the end of this sentence here is sources feel he'll be at Texas for the long haul.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, I mean that's, you know, I think that's also part and parcel with the rumors from last year. You know, a lot of people have been that. That definitely got the attention of a lot of people that I talked to. But he says all the right things behind the scenes. He says the right things publicly. He's normally really candid about it. And that's not like he can go in depth one way or the other. But the only thing that I ever worry about, and I've worried about this really since they got Arch, is if some team tries to package, you know, Sark and. Yeah, and Arch, like if the Browns get the number one overall pick and they know, man, the Manny don't want to go there. You know, maybe they do something crazy to get Sark. I don't think it's going to happen. I'm just saying, you know, you always have to be aware. Aware of it, even these low probability things. But, you know, I, this. I keep hearing more stuff about if, if. If there's business left to attend to. Arch isn't leaving too. So I'm, you know, I'm monitoring that one closer. Mostly. Mostly I care about the season. Right. Everything else is kind of on the back burner. We got one or two recruitments we care about right now, but I'm focused on the season. But there are a bunch of things that I have in the back of my mind, like, hey, I'm hearing people even heard it on Saturday that if, if, if there's stuff left for us to accomplish in college, he's not leaving just to go get it. Get. Just to go be number one. Overall in the draft.
Tex Homer
Absolutely. And then this is also kind of. This a similar point. Sark reemphasized culture building. So they got started sooner. I think they re implemented some stuff they were doing earlier, like, you know, the, the shirts or whatever and picking the draft.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, yeah, yeah. They got sar. Got back to basics. When I first really bought into Sark, you know, even when they went 5 and 7, you can see how that season would have gone vastly different with a couple of minor changes here. There. The personnel was just bad. So I was, I was. I was pretty big on Sark after that year actually. But he really caught my attention with that first off, that first real full off season where he instituted the draft and you could see that he was building the culture there. He exiled a bunch of guys that didn't belong in the program. He was still struggling to get probably the top line guys in the transfer portal that they needed, but he was doing some of the. He took some of those guys with a purpose. Ray Thornton, excellent, excellent guy. Ben Davis, excellent guy. So he was. He was rebuilding culture the whole time. But it really took. It really became obvious to me after that first year they instituted that draft. And that's where that draft wasn't about talent. It was about accountability, doing the right things within the program, which ultimately leads to culture. You got to have a culture of accountability. That's the one where I've. I've shared the anecdote a lot of times where, you know, Bijan Robinson was one of the team captains and he just drafted as many walk ons as he could. He was trying to win.
Tex Homer
Yeah.
Eric Naleen
Oh, man, I'll never forget that. I love Bijon for that, but it really was about doing the right things, accountability. And he got back to basics on that. And you have to do that year in, year out because there's just. There's even way more turnover now than there was just five years ago.
Tex Homer
Yeah. With the amount of like starting. Bringing in to start transfers too, that part matters. Running back, wide receiver, linebacker, that kind of stuff. So it's like you want to get those guys integrated and feeling like part of the team.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, definitely.
Coach Dub
I know people say everything about culture every off season. It's like a word that's kind of thrown around when recruits, people from the outside can actually see it when they go and take visits of how the kids are, how to. Well, I don't call them kids, but young men or the men are on the team. How everybody operates at Texas, they can always talk about the culture and how how it is. So it's not just actually talk. People actually see it when they go visit Charlie.
Eric Naleen
Charlie hitting that Unk age, calling on kids. We all get there eventually. Charlie or Unc, I call them kids now, too. I didn't call them the kids in my early 30s when I was, you know, still thought of myself as a kid. So, yeah, welcome to Unk stage, buddy.
Tex Homer
Yeah. Talking with Jet, he would say the difference with Sark was just. It wasn't posters on the wall and there was a more practical approach to it. Next big key veteran O line. The addition of Lauren Seymour just added another veteran to an already veteran O line. He's quite quiet, but business. Like, definitely on the smaller side or more slim than the other linemen. We did a great video on Saturday with Landon Tangwell. He came on and broke down all the various starters and he really likes Seymour. In the past game and then Sark, whenever Evan went to his availability yesterday, you know, they're still not sure. They're just seeing him work out. So we still have to figure that out. But it is nice to have that piece.
Eric Naleen
Well, I love that Sark comment. I wish everybody would read it, take it in, understand what it means. Because I get asked about Lawrence Seymour every day and I, you know, there's just not data on him blocking hero Canoe, you know, I mean, like in a real way. So how can you. How can you knew. No, but I wrote this. And then in the comments, one of our better posters, he said, hey, look, this is what the guy looked like last year. Looks kind of like an offensive lineman to me is what the implication was. And he, he was carrying some, like, he had some weight. Weight in his arms, like, you know, fat. So he did look like an offensive lineman, but we've heard he slimmed down. And, you know, Sark has basically said the same thing. He's made vast improvements in the strength conditioning program. It does not take these guys long to make changes. Man, this is not. This is not one of those reality TV shows where they've chronicle a person for 18 months. You know, these guys change rather quickly. They got the. Like I've said, they have so many different sets of eyes on these on, especially on the offensive line. Nutrition, multiple sets of eyes, the conditioning, they just. There's way more attention to detail on this group than any other position. And I think that's going to manifest on the field. You know, we'll wait and see. But yeah, ask me about Lawrence Seymour in August. You know, don't need to set a reminder Everybody's going to do it, but that's when we'll really know something about him. One more thing. I was just getting caught up on the board. Evan V. Wrote a very good article about how young this team is from a roster standpoint. And there's a contradiction between the starters and the backups. The starters are all, you know, have experience, and that experience is. Is definitely highlighted, especially the difference year over year on the offensive line. So that's a huge part of why people are way more optimistic behind the scenes. Offensive line is going to get better just by virtue of being older and more experienced.
Tex Homer
Yeah, you say it right here. Sources remain confident the offensive line will be vastly improved over last year. We can just get to that. I'll. I will take it average, so gladly. And I think we can do that with maturity there. Once again, go watch that offensive break line breakdown video we just did on Saturday, and you'll be more excited as well.
Eric Naleen
Did you see that USC tweet about the Odyssey, where our odyssey begins on. What's it called? Like, they don't. They didn't.
Tex Homer
Yeah, I just saw the graphic with the helmet.
Eric Naleen
Yeah. Usc, of course, is on the losing end of that, so somebody in their department also.
Tex Homer
I'm not sure the Odyssey is the right thing. I mean, he was gone for 20 years and.
Eric Naleen
Well, yeah. And the men of Troy were on the other side, right?
Tex Homer
Correct. And, yeah, the message of that movie
Eric Naleen
is not that you want to go
Tex Homer
on the Odyssey, so go and go and watch that. Unless they've been on their odyssey for
Eric Naleen
20 years, which is actually probably fair.
Tex Homer
So maybe they are getting close to Ithaca. But I don't think. I don't think you understood the message of that film very well. All right. Arch Manning is better for last year. Not better than. Which we also agree, but better for going through the ringer, man. Incredible amounts of. That's got to be a trip, man, just to have us idiots talking about you all the time. But the national media and all of that, man, they. It was pretty rough on old boy in the beginning.
Eric Naleen
Well, I think this is kind of similar to the Sark, right? You know, Sark had a disappointing year. Arch had this. And it wasn't a terrible year by Arch. If you sit back and look at what he accomplished, this. His stat line was actually really impressive for the struggles he had. It was really impressive for the offensive line he had in front of me. Really impressive for the running backs. The wide receivers are nowhere close to what they are this year. So, all in all, I Mean, just. It was an impressive year. He didn't meet expectations because A, the offensive line and B, is his short accuracy was lacking. But he took a beating last year and well, when he did get hit, it was. He's a tough guy to hit because he's got that ability to maneuver within the pocket. But that made him better too. You know, imagine him with a little. With the half a second longer to. To play the position within the pocket. He should be deadly. But he's just got the confidence, the toughness and he's like, hey, look man, I've already been through it. It's only up from here, I think is his mindset. And yeah, he's got quite a bit of confidence. He never really lost his confidence last year. At least, you know, people didn't think so maybe. I'm sure he questioned himself on some of the. The short, short misses. But yeah, I mean tough, tough times make. Make stronger people and I think Arch is better for it. His, his dad and grandpa basically said the same thing too. But it shows behind the scenes. And let's. People are going to talk about this vast improvement that he's made. He probably didn't. Isn't going to make as big of an improvement as we think. It's just. He's going to have much more help.
Tex Homer
Yeah. And you say it right here. He's processing faster and has already built a good rapport with Cam Coleman. That doesn't hurt a more experienced offensive line doesn't hurt running backs to give you some semblance of safety and security. And if you place how he's playing towards the end of the year last year and improve short accuracy, then it's like I don't need some weird leap. You're playing awesome towards the end, but complete the short stuff, does a great
Coach Dub
job avoiding impression the pocket like later as the season went on, he's making multiple people miss. He's like Bijan back there a few times and still delivering downfield. So combine that with a competitor. Like you said, a good offensive line. So running backs and weapons. Mm. Moseley is healthy. Like you got so many targets out there, man. You. I think it's gonna be fine. You're gonna see Arch.
Eric Naleen
Hopefully.
Coach Dub
I don't know. We'll see. We'll see. Man, I don't know.
Tex Homer
Yeah, we're still a little paranoid because he did have the yips earlier in the year. So it's like. And Eric says it right here, he didn't show show any of those issues in camp. So it's like we don't know for sure, but we feel pretty confident that will not occur again.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, that's another thing that I'm not. You just don't know until the games. It's like, you know, kicker. I get asked about kicker all the time and I have no idea how that kicker is going to look when it really counts, you know, need, need a field goal to win in the, in the waning seconds against Ohio State. I have no idea. And that's what people are going to remember them for, you know, Week two.
Tex Homer
Yeah, that's. Yeah, I do not expect that to happen again. That was such a strange period, like trying to get your intel and like, just like everyone became an armchair psychologist
Eric Naleen
and yeah, he's missing easy throws. I mean that out, I think to utep. And I was like, oh, well, he didn't fix it week over week.
Tex Homer
So yeah, that was just. That whole thing was strange, but hopefully we don't have to have those conversations again. And Quarterback 2 in good hands with KJ Lacey looks to be more than a capable backup. And I agree, man, they were blitzing his face off in the spring game and he was so much more composed than I ever thought he would be for his age.
Eric Naleen
Hopefully. We only see him like we saw Matthew Caldwell last year, very, you know, very limited. And then he can, you know, show what he can, but he's had a very good off season, you know, I mean, yeah, I think we were already hearing good things before the spring game, but it's always nice to have a visual confirmation of it. And he, he delivered beyond what I expected in the spring game with just the, the decisiveness of the position. It's, it's important decisiveness and making good decisions. Right. If you're being decisive making bad decisions, it gets you in trouble quicker. But he was decisive in making good decisions. He knew what he was going to do with the ball. Very impressive. He looked, he looked like a much more experienced quarterback in that setting and he was getting blitzed like crazy. So I'm again, what's it, what's it going to happen? What's going to, what's it going to look like when you have a real functioning running back offensive line and you're throwing to the top targets? I mean, he's gonna, he would be decent right now. And that's, it's right in line with what we've heard that they feel like they'd be in playoff contention with him
Tex Homer
and tactical runner too. He was not just running out of the pocket whenever he got a chance. Whenever he did run, it always made sense. So showed a lot of great things. And then right here, Diabel has shown a lot of promise. But Lacey is more advanced at this point.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, yeah. I mean Dia at the same stage as Kate. KJ is probably a little ahead of kj. Yeah. But KJ having that years is big. So that's, that's one look, dude. That's going to be a real battle. But I don't know when again, if Arch comes back, then yeah, who, who cares? You know, I mean it's just not worth paying attention to. These guys just need to all go about their business and wait their turn.
Tex Homer
I like this one a lot too. Workouts and drills are more game oriented. So a lot of the agility drills start with snap counts. Great. Rather than a whistle to force concentration when players are fatigued trying to target penalties there a little bit. And then also it's just good to simulate real battle. They run shuttles. The first one might be Texas State. The second shuttle is Ohio State. There's more focus on the season. Workouts are also said to be harder than before. That sucks because they were already running like crazy. That's what happens when you miss the playoffs. I like this note a ton.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, yeah, I remember. You know, Thursday they had short, shorter shuttles and then Friday they had the long, the real, real grueling one. The short ones are bad enough, but the, the 110s and the. They call them the Sevens. That one with that colleague Lockett is out in front of the pack. That's a seven. That. Yeah, they're. They just work out extremely hard on conditioning. There's no doubt about that. But as for the drills being more game oriented, that's another one. Hey, look man, I'm not, I'm telling you what they're trying to do to fix things. I'm not saying that they have fixed the pre snap penalties. I can't possibly know that. I expect the pre snap penalties to be much better than in 2024 with a veteran offensive line. And they weren't, they weren't great. And so I, I think it's more of a function of the overall playbook. Their head swimming a little bit, lots of shifts, motions. You know, I think that's. That plays a big part of the pre snap penalties on the O line. But they are trying to address it and we'll see if it works.
Tex Homer
I think it's a system feature or bug at this point. And teams that use shifts and motions, at least in the NFL, they get more penalties. They also score more points.
Eric Naleen
Right.
Tex Homer
So it's like you might, if you
Eric Naleen
want the penalties to come down, you
Tex Homer
might lose a touchdown as well. So at some point it's just getting to a reasonable thing where it's not always at the deadliest moment, where it's.
Eric Naleen
That's, that's where I'm at too, that they're just trade offs. You know, hey there. We are going to be higher on penalties, but it's going to result in some easy touchdowns. Yep.
Tex Homer
Must Champ still has his fastball. This was the fun one of the off season. You know, he was just doing strategy. Does he. Can he still dc had he retired essentially podcast Must Champ wearing his glasses and just talking nerdishly about football. Was he still able to punch whiteboards? Big factor here, but it seems that we did make the correct hire there. Eric. He still has some energy. He's also younger than pk. He's just been around so long successfully. He feels like he's 75. He's not close to that. Still a young coach or.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, he went on. He went on a brief hiatus to be a dad is all that happened. Yeah. You know, now he's. He's back. He's not even really grandpa age. You know, there's already a huge value add because he still has all the other attributes that you, you love about the guy. It's not just the play calling and the scheming and all that or the just the institutional knowledge. You know, he's kind of an extension of the Saban tree. So, you know, you, you like that first and foremost. But even if he isn't. Doesn't remind you of 2008 on the field. You know, it doesn't have quite that success. There's still all already the returns of the program mindset, the relationship building with the. The players is huge. That one really stood out to me. We had early, early anecdotes on that.
Tex Homer
Yeah.
Eric Naleen
You know, he's reaching out to every player on defense and probably I'm not sure that the PK ever did that, you know, in his, in all of his time at Texas and must have did it pretty much within the first week of being hired. And then the intensity and just the oversight that he has. Sark knows that he doesn't have to have to micromanage or, or look over his shoulder. And Muschamp has been ever present. You know, it's like he's like, I'm not going to be a DC until I'm fully Ready to commit. Well, he was fully ready to commit when he got to Texas because if the NCAA allows him to be with the team, he is with the team. Unless he's out recruiting, which is another reason that you know that he's still got it. Because if you have the enter, that would probably be your first place. The energy gets drained from.
Tex Homer
Yep.
Eric Naleen
Recruiting. He has that in spades.
Tex Homer
Well, that was the Georgia camp, too. They said that he had awesome relationships with a lot of their star players, Jalen Walker and all of that. So he. And that was from whenever they were in high school going forward. Part of reason why he wanted to stay at Georgia that extra season was to see a lot of the guys that he recruited recruited go to the NFL, too. So. Known as a. As a big relationship guy.
Coach Dub
Yeah. You talk about him, relationships and being a schemer. He's a. He was in Houston yesterday at the Texas High School association, the conference. It's standing room only. Like, everybody's lined up to go see him talk football and talk scheme like the coaches, and they're just in awe of him. Right. So he has to draw not only his players, but, like, coaches around the state who just want to hear this guy talk football, man. So he's definitely still highly respected.
Tex Homer
Yeah, there's no. I've never heard a coach say anything sideways about him. They always pay him a ton of respect, so that's always a good sign. You want to be a coach's favorite coach. To me, that's the biggest thing is that Sark can fully concentrate on the offense. Yep. Sark said that, right? Yeah. Unless you have to be the head coach of the defense.
Eric Naleen
Right. Then that's. That's been. That's bore out this. This off season where Muschamp does have full autonomy of that side of the ball. But, you know, the. The stuff about scheme and stuff is overblown because we know it still works because we can see it at Georgia. You know, it's just. Can he call plays well? Yeah, I think that's going to be pretty easy when you have Colin Simmons and, you know, the secondary he has and Biles and, you know, I'm not worried about that one bit.
Tex Homer
It's about players and football's innovated, but it hasn't innovated to where cover one doesn't matter anymore. Like, all of this. Like, of course it still counts. The team is lifting heavier. This is a huge theme with the fans. Most importantly, the biggest theme with Paul and Ian. So they're very excited to hear that the team is lifting heavier, particularly the offensive line getting more push.
Eric Naleen
Well, I hope to see it. I mean it should, it's.
Coach Dub
It.
Eric Naleen
You know, there's certain ways to guarantee strength gains. Anybody that's commenting on the chat or watching this can guarantee strength, strength gains. You know, we saw Yancy McKnight get tremendous results on strength though. He sacrificed some flexibility and mobility. They got a little stiffer. So there's ways you want to find the middle ground. But Texas was in a bit of a strength deficit and that's the first thing that, that Tory Becton changed this off season. We were writing about this in January. It should bear out on the, on the field. Like I said, it's, it's one thing you can guarantee strength gains if you just work towards it. Now we just need to find out, you know, where are they at in the improvement? Some of these guys it's, you know, it's a four year arc. Right. If you're lifting heavy, you're going to be a lot heavier in year four than you are in year year one or two. Well, they're really in only you're, you're entering year one as far as lifting heavy. So you want to see if they're starting in a good place or if there's still a deficit there. Yeah,
Tex Homer
more bunch sets, more physical receivers. So this was a big thing that we talked about. I don't know what a month or two ago is whenever we started hearing that intel and bunch sets just means they're moving the receiver in receivers in closer to the line and that allows them to be more physical and block in the run game as well.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, this is another one of Ian's favorite points this off season. Yeah, they feel like they can get the value out of being in the 12 personnel while still being dangerous as receivers because the they offer some physicality. You know, we know Emmett Mosley was basically brought in. He's gonna, he's a good receiver, don't get me wrong. But there's a big reason he was brought in was was due to blocking. Wingo is a big, strong physical guy. Cam Coleman, big, strong, physical guy with long arms. Long arms and blocking go hand in hand. But so too so to just want to. And these three guys have it. It doesn't matter that Cam Coleman is looked at as the number two receiver in the draft and an elite target receiver. It doesn't matter that Wingo's, you know, viewed as a possible, you know, late, late first, early second round draft pick, three year player. Those guys want to block and Sarks wants to take full advantage of that. If you can get, if you can keep defenses in nickel smaller on that side of the ball yet you, you have a sort of a 12 personnel mindset. I mean you're going to have some advantages there. Yeah.
Tex Homer
And you're going to see a 12 personnel mindset here later in the notes. But Chris Jackson prizes well rounded wide receivers and that's something that I appreciate before we keep going.
Coach Dub
Go ahead, go ahead, Homer.
Tex Homer
No, you're good. I was going to go to A.D.
Coach Dub
i would say with the bunch sets, I don't know if people remember maybe two years ago with Matthew golden guys, he was motioning to bunch a lot to get people open, right. You can't throw because this is almost like a time in offense, right. So if you jam the receivers and throughout time and you make the quarterback home to the football. So about a bunch sets bringing everybody in tighter, you really can't get up and press, right. And then that's where you get people on defense mixed mixing up the calls on who they got with a lot of switch routes. So with these talented guys it's going to be hard to figure out who you got to cover. And then they one on one situations with any one of these guys, you're liable to lose. So I love that we're running bunch sets again.
Tex Homer
Then you can start the fake blocking, right. Cam Coleman shows hands and then he takes off too. So you have all these fun little additions as well. Before we keep going, let's hear a word from Andre. Texans know when you're injured, there's one name that gets results. Andre the lawyer Trust the team that has secured millions for their clients and helped thousands of Texans win their injury cases. Car wrecks, slip and falls, 18 wheeler. Accidents on the job, injuries, wrongful deaths. Don't let the insurance companies tell you what your claim is worth. Andre the lawyer will fight for you. His principal office is in Dallas, but they serve Texans throughout the state. So don't wait. Call 214-444-8808. That's 214-444-8808. Contact info is in the description. Thank you, Andre.
Eric Naleen
Well, Andre texted me last night, said hey, you know he's with the, he was with the Texas athlete, not a football player that wants to come on the show. So we gotta, we got to try to organize that for sure.
Tex Homer
Bo Masco is legit. I think this could quietly be. I mean I'm a Biles head, you know, that's what I'm after, but this could quietly be one of the best additions we made. And I don't think it gets enough praise even in wider Texas sphere.
Eric Naleen
Well, we didn't see him. Nobody watched Rutgers last year, so it's not like he came in as a household name.
Tex Homer
Y.
Eric Naleen
But yeah, there's the chance that he's really good. He's. He looks like the best cornerback on the team. And if you believe in the talent, you know, look at the next line right there. K. Phillips looks like a three and done. Y. And that says a lot about Moscow. I'm really excited. He's one of the guys I'm most excited to see this year because I feel like he is a bit of an unknown as far as. As far as verifying things myself. But he seems like a pure known behind the scenes. They love the dude.
Tex Homer
Coach, what do you think about that addition?
Coach Dub
I think Masco, I know like you said, we didn't watch Ruggles as much, but if you go watch his highlight tapes, you can see him. He has a high iq. How he plays, you know, with Rutgers on the Shiano, they play a lot of COVID four or quarters. You can kind of see him switching off or baiting quarterbacks. Right. Coming off guys. To me, when I saw that, I saw. I'm not calling J. Baron, but he just has iq, right? He's. You can tell he's a football player. He may have one zone, he may have a man, but he has that ability to kind of come off and say, hey, I know where the ball is going. And then we saw him in the spring game cover a slot fade. I don't think I've seen a corner cover slot fade that perfect. He kind of squeezed, I want to say Wingo or somebody to the sidelines, man. So, I mean, I like what he brings to the table. I think he's gonna be that quiet dog leader in the. In the secondary this year.
Eric Naleen
He's got experience, which you like. We, you know, we talked about how do you replace Manny Muhammad's experience? They. They went on and got this guy and he has that despite having two years of eligibility left.
Tex Homer
They trusted him. Whenever they played Penn State, he. I swear he was manned up the whole time. I mean, following motions across the field, all that kind of stuff.
Coach Dub
The same thing. Jeremiah Smith a few times too.
Tex Homer
Yeah. So it shows that they really believed in him.
Eric Naleen
It would have been interesting if, if Texas just didn't have this locked up due to Mark Orfe being his. His previous coach. What schools would have gone after him. Like we probably would have heard about Penn State going after him, you know.
Tex Homer
Yeah.
Eric Naleen
It would have been interesting to see his true value on the open market.
Tex Homer
Yeah, no, it wouldn't have. I'm glad that he came. Right.
Eric Naleen
I mean Texas and Nil are like. Well we don't want to see that. I'm just curious what the suitors would have been that because that would have. That would have set expectations to at a different place for sure.
Tex Homer
And then we mentioned that kid Phillips looks like a three and done three and out player. Has all those NFL tangibles.
Eric Naleen
What.
Tex Homer
What was it? He's explosive jumper, right? What was it?
Eric Naleen
Yeah, he had a very long. He was state ranked in the long jump, 24 something. Also a good quarter mile runner and a solid sprinter too. He's just got length but he also has the mindset too. Smart kid. You know, like I said early on, got a Stanford offer. They don't throw those out to just anybody. Watches a lot of tape. Kind of like a safety more than a corner corner. Like to just say roll the ball out. I'll cover the guy. But yeah. Cade. I think Kate Cade will study like a safety like we used to hear about. John A. So he's got the. He's got the entire toolkit. Just needs a little bit more experience. That's the thing is, you know he's. He. He didn't start till later in the year. He does have some playing time under his belt. You like the fact that Cam Coleman is. Helped grown him up a little bit this offseason. If you can go up against Cam Coleman and do okay, sure it's gonna. It's gonna be a lot easier going up against mere mortals. So I like him, I like him to have a good season this year, but I don't. I'm not sure if the true breakout is this year or next.
Tex Homer
You made a point, triggered a thought. I don't know why corners are lazy with tape. Because they can benefit the most from it. All you have to do is watch the three guys you're facing. All their receiver or all their releases. I mean it could be the most beneficial position because you're doing one on one. A bunch of. But corners are really bad about film study. They.
Eric Naleen
I mean I'm not, you know, not all corners are like that but some
Tex Homer
of it's not all, but it's a stereotype.
Eric Naleen
Yeah. Some take it to another level where they. They watch it a lot, you know and it's. It's just the position doesn't demand it like it does safety or Mike, you know, linebacker. But yeah, he has that mindset. And it might be one of the reasons why Texas thought he would be an elite safety and he would be an elite safety. It's just, you know, why you don't have to move forward.
Tex Homer
Would it be so easy? You just tell the film department. It's like, hey, I'm going up against these three guys. Give me all their releases, and then you're psychic. I don't know why they don't do it, but I think it's because they have the tools to deal with whatever release and they'll react live. But still, Phillips, Masco and Littleton have the highest upside group on the team other than edge wide receiver. Yeah, but I still. I like the cinnamon here, that there's still a lot of potential in this room, but this room could be absolutely dominant if they maximize and go to run of guys.
Coach Dub
I mean, DBU will actually be back. They got that kind of talent in the room where you can see multiple first, second rounds year after year.
Eric Naleen
And I would not forget Warren Roberson. Warren Roberson's the best athlete in that room.
Tex Homer
Yeah. Yeah. I want to see how he gets mixed in. If he just comes in late or what is he corner?
Eric Naleen
He's gonna. He's gonna play a lot. He'll be the corner.
Tex Homer
Is he corner three?
Eric Naleen
Yeah, he'll be the third corner.
Tex Homer
I'm excited. Kobe Black, Phil Seme and Jermaine Bishop changed positions. Yeah. So the Kobe Black one I love because I wanted more depth in the safety room. Kobe Black's skill set on tape was that of a nickel or safety kind of in the run game. Keep it in front of you and make a good decision. He did that a lot. So I feel a lot better. I feel a lot better that we can have three corners we like and afford to move Kobe there. I like this change.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, I mean, that says something good about Roberson too, because they, again, they feel good about him. Yeah, the room needs. I think that that room needs a more. A proper linear life after Jelani McDonald. There's just not like, who's it going to be in. In 2027? Every. Every position you could kind of see the future, but you can't see it at safety. And so they need somebody there. Obviously, everybody wants it to be Jonah. And maybe it's. You need two of them back there. Maybe Derrick Williams goes pro after this year. We've got people thinking that he could look like a mid rounder this season. So that. That position needed some athleticism and some experience thrown in there. And Kobe does have, you know, the physicality and he's, he's a very smart player, too. You know, we've, you know, we've had people tell us that he's a smart, smart football player. So, yeah, he's a perfect fit. If you watch a senior film before he really, you know, I thought the senior film looked like he was going to be a safety. Now he didn't have to move to safety based on what was happening on the field, which happens with a lot of cornerbacks, which is also, again, makes you more exciting because there's no. He's not lacking athleticism in any way. So there's a lot of upside here. I think that this is his NFL upside position. I think it's good for him long term, but it's also good for the team. Good short term for the team.
Tex Homer
All right. And then we get a new star, which is Muschamp's room. So that's nice. But he moves from safety down to nickel. And using his speed at star. Is he the fastest? Who's the fastest on the team? Eric? I need it top. Top three.
Eric Naleen
It'd be niblet feel to me. And then maybe Cohen Brown.
Coach Dub
Nice.
Eric Naleen
Yeah. Colin Brown ran 22.5a couple weeks ago in the miles per hour, so that'll
Tex Homer
be the big thing. He wasn't super aware last season. He struggled a little bit with the safety position. I don't know how much of that was coaching as well and not getting to play a ton and not get the reps that you needed safety. So give it a wash there.
Eric Naleen
He wasn't, he wasn't ready to play. And that, that was a year before he was ready. You know, that should have been probably Derrick Williams snaps. You know, he was raw. He. Now, he had a good off season last year, but one that would really was foretelling two years down the road because he was a project. He was. He was late to the position. Remember, Texas was late to offer him. You know, I think they were. I think the reason they were late to offer him was because they didn't know how early he was going to be ready to play. And we saw that last year. And then also I, you know, I don't want to sleep on this. He was hurt, you know, he hurt his shoulder. He had to have surgery. He was hurt early in the year with that shoulder, too. And that's why you saw him miss some tackles. So we're not sure what he's going to Be yet they want to take advantage of his speed and maybe you get a little bit more physicality at the position as well. Being a former safety, that's healthy, you know, I, I like the move, honestly. And, and with Muschamp there, he's going to coach him up real fast, you know, get a lot of one on one time. Mus champ is basically the quasi Nichols coach, so I think it's good for him. And also, you know, I'm not discounting him at safety long term either.
Coach Dub
Yeah, his new trainer, Bam, who got trained J Baron, Andrew Makuba, Michael Taps, the rest of them, he's been working with him. So he changed, he changed trainers. Right. So I'm not calling the guy a miracle worker, but if you put in work for him, you're, you're going to get better at your game, in your craft. So I'm excited to kind of see he does his season at nickel.
Tex Homer
Yeah, that's a great note. I had no clue. And then Jermaine Bishop, he's at cornerback and doing well and I like the end of this though. He's expected to play more receiver this season than corner. That was the fear. I'm like, what are we doing, man? I saw his version.
Eric Naleen
Stark said it yesterday at the convention, Coach's convention, that he's going back to receiver. We, yeah, we predicted that, you know, right out of the gates. We'd heard that right out of the gates. But man, he looks so damn good at cornerback that, you know, maybe he does get some looks there as, as the, you know, I don't know. They got to play Samari Matthews. That's the thing though. If they didn't have Samari, I would be watching this a little bit more closely. But Samari had an awesome spring as a true freshman.
Coach Dub
Got.
Eric Naleen
I've never heard about a true freshman cornerback getting his hands on so many footballs before. So that, that tells you a lot about Samari. So, you know, I think that's his biggest roadblock to getting playing time at cornerback, which I'm fine with. You know, I would probably be watching him to get punt return looks, you know, maybe a non conference more so than cornerback, but wide receivers position. Look, man, this is Steve Sarkeesian. He wants to put the ball in the end zone. He's not going to say. He's not going to say. All right, this guy kept four footballs out of the end zone at cornerback, but I could have had 12 in the end zone, you know.
Tex Homer
Yeah, exchange rate is not great.
Coach Dub
Right.
Tex Homer
But yeah, yeah, Bishop just wants to. He just wants to ball out.
Eric Naleen
Echoed what we talked about. We talked about him being the leader in that class and Sark said it. I love it when Sark says something. You know, we had just written it last week that, that he's the. Bishop is the de facto leader of that class. And Sark said the same thing.
Tex Homer
This note is where I think you can go over the top as an elite offense. And this is talking about Texas having three number one wide receivers. Quote from a source said Emmett Mosley would be the number one receiver at a lot of schools. Important. He looks great. He's having one of the best summer sessions of anyone. People are sleeping on him. He was the most skilled. I don't know if he's the most skilled now with Cam in the mix, but. Or even Bishop. He has great skill, but he was the most skilled last year. And then you mentioned the part of blocking. But if you have a deadly number three, if you have a deadly number two, you're good. If you have a deadly number three, then you become unstoppable very quickly.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, this ties in the question we have down here. Coach Steve Sarcasm. What did Mosley hit? I think he's asking about the miles per hour. Yeah, I heard high 21s for Mosley. He had the fastest time, whatever that week was at the wide receivers. Colin Brown is faster. A number of, you know, I think Cam Coleman is probably faster than Mosley, but he's faster than what we. What we were led to believe coming out of Stanford. I think he is fully healthy and that ties in with him having one of the best summer sessions out of every. Anybody on the team. You know, they've got three different skill sets, which is what I like. And Sark doesn't like to lean into the. The stereotypes of the boundary and the. And the, you know, the field and all. But those guys do kind of have clear, very obvious fits in those three differing roles. Which also tells you, hey, they do have different skill sets. And Emmett Mosley I think can be with. Especially since we're hearing the Titans, no single tight end has stepped up. I think that really opens the door for Mosley as a receiving threat on, you know, third and eight, you know, underneath, squat, catch it, take a hit, fall forward, pick up the first, that sort of thing. I think you can have a very big year in that regard.
Tex Homer
Win the game versus Mississippi State in the game or.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, I mean, you know, I remember the first time I really understood the value of having secondary receivers was John Taylor playing for the 49ers outside of Jerry Rice and John Taylor had some massive, massive, massive catches because everybody was focused on Jerry Rice. Coleman's gonna mostly is going to have get the same sort of looks, but he's going to be in the middle of the field and you're going to have a lot of attention on two outside guys. He's going to benefit a lot. He's going to be open. Not just because. And you know, we knew he's going to be open just because of scheme. Now we're going to be.
Coach Dub
We're finding out.
Eric Naleen
He's probably gonna be open because he has the wheels too. Yeah.
Tex Homer
And the skill. And I wonder if he gets used like Whittington. Remember, Whittington was kind of underutilized, but he pop up for like two games and dominate. I hope it's more consistent than that.
Eric Naleen
It better be more than that, man, because I think Whittington had like two touchdowns his last two seasons, five in his career. They didn't like to throw to him downfield. Of course, Whittington. Whittington ended up a legend no matter what, but he really would have been a legend if they would have come back against Washington. He had that long catch down the sideline. Whittington wasn't great about going up and playing the ball in the air. It didn't have a huge catch radius. Mosley does have a good catch rate as he will go up and make plays. I'm really excited about him. You know, there's.
Coach Dub
I.
Eric Naleen
We just got to write about him more because I do.
Coach Dub
I'm.
Eric Naleen
I'm beginning to think, you know, the athletic profile, Texas or Sark, liked him coming out of high school. You know, Sark doesn't take a whole lot of guys that don't. That aren't athletes at Water Seaweed. He hasn't looked at too many that I've seen. Look at Karen Brown getting a bump last week, man. As what we. We consider him sort of a Mosley type of player. But he also ran a 443 automatic 40. So he's. He wants speed. So he saw something in the high school evaluation on Mosley that said this isn't just a Stanford possession receiver. Yeah.
Tex Homer
Yeah. I'm excited about Mosley. Yeah.
Eric Naleen
I just gotta.
Tex Homer
I gotta make sure to keep talking about him. One guy that I do talk about a lot is Rashin Biles being the real deal. I think he'll be a top three linebacker in the country.
Eric Naleen
I gotta address this real quick, man. Somebody in the comments of the last video said the S is silent on this. And I said, okay, I'll. I'll entertain that notion. You never know these days. When I went and looked up Rashin Biles to see if there was a proper pronunciation of it, which I didn't see because everybody's probably just going, s and H make a sh sound. And then I see his mother's name is Rashida, and I'm thinking that that's probably a play on it. So it's either. If it. If that's Raheem, then I'm. Then she's Raheed, I would think. And I don't think that's true. So that guy said that Chip Brown reported that it's Raheem based on what the mother said. But again, the mother's name is Rashida. I hope this guy's watching this video, because I don't think that's accurate.
Tex Homer
We'll see whenever. He will definitely do a press conference.
Eric Naleen
Yeah.
Tex Homer
Because he's gonna have some big plays if it's wrong.
Eric Naleen
If it's wrong. I'm only offering partial apology because nobody on earth should expect that S to be silent. Exactly. Why is it there?
Tex Homer
A source maintains he's at the top of the discussion for the best linebacker in the country. Am I the source? I agree.
Eric Naleen
I wish you would go work in their video department.
Tex Homer
I know that's what I need to get. It would just be highlights.
Eric Naleen
Hey, if Texas wants to hire Charlie in their recruiting department or offensive line quality control, I'm. I'm all for it, guys. They.
Tex Homer
Yeah, it's just me. Just what? The only thing I shot that day was Biles doing drops. It's like, hey, man, arch would be nice.
Eric Naleen
Biles cam and Nick Townsend cam. That's all you have?
Tex Homer
Lance Jackson cam.
Eric Naleen
Lance Jackson cam.
Coach Dub
Yeah.
Eric Naleen
Yeah.
Tex Homer
They're like, hey, man, we kind of need some arch stuff. He can do it all, not just blitz or play the pass. I agree, man. He had great run grades. I don't know where the.
Eric Naleen
The idea.
Tex Homer
I think they just looked at his size and said he can't stop the run. That's not the case.
Coach Dub
That's the main thing. Everybody looked at his size, but it's been smaller linebackers. Heck, and even in NFL, smaller linebackers who play the run well. So I don't know. I'm not gonna worry about the plan to run. Plus, he got big muscles in front of him. It's keeping everybody off of him.
Eric Naleen
My bold comparison is Derek Brooks. I'm not saying to be an NFL hall of Famer like Brooks. But remember, Derek at Florida State was an absolute menace in coverage and playing the run. And he was not the biggest linebacker at the time. That was back when linebackers were really big and, you know, thick ankled and yeah, didn't have to do anything but play in the box. Derek Brooks was ahead of his time. I think Biles fits that template. We know that he can make plays in reverse. We know that he can make plays when he can just drop the hammer, run downhill on a blitz, sideline to sideline, no concerns. But you know, if he can actually play the run in the box, honestly, then, then he probably is going to be the best linebacker in the country.
Tex Homer
The same source states emphatically that Colin Simmons is the best player in the country and then Biles is the second best player on the Texas defense.
Eric Naleen
Yep.
Tex Homer
Yeah, it's good stuff about Raheem Biles there.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, yeah, Raheem. I, man, I just don't. I looked and then his mom's name is Rashida. Come on now.
Tex Homer
Running back is night and day from last year. Probably. I'm trying to think through this is probably the most important thing, even over O line because if we had backs that were explosive even with the horrors and O line, the season would have looked differently. We would have had more wins. So to me, that's probably the most important thing. Much more speed, much more talent deeper. Wonderful. Love hearing that.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, we didn't see the runs get maximized last year outside of I waste wiser.
Coach Dub
Didn't.
Eric Naleen
His two best runs of the year were him maximizing it. He had the long one against OU and the long one against. Against A M. Both of those runs could have been stopped behind the line of scrimmage. He just went on a whole different. And why do I keep getting so many text messages just on this
Coach Dub
while
Eric Naleen
I'm in the middle? I, I normally, I turn this off.
Coach Dub
No big deal.
Tex Homer
We're just on the live, dude.
Coach Dub
Yeah.
Eric Naleen
And well, you know, it's on three. Hey, Eric. How's it going? Yeah, so, you know, the playmaking is huge because it doesn't have to be blocked perfectly to still get a play. And there's a massive difference between, you know, a three yard loss and a three yard gain. I mean, we can all do that difference at 6, but it, you know what I mean, it makes things so much easier for the play caller, for the offense to execute, keep drives working. So just those. It doesn't have to be a big play. It's Just it's a big play in the scheme of things, but it's not like a. All right, we're going to remember that one for the rest of your life. It doesn't have to be a 70 yard house call. Just keep them ahead of the sticks. It's kind of like if you can temper pre snap penalties in conjunction with. There's a lot of opportunity for hidden yardage here. That's, that's on top of the fact that yeah, you know, Relig Brown can break a 70 yarder. Hollywood smothers can do the same. Derek Cooper as your third running back has a speed and the power to make big plays on his own. You know, hopefully it works. Hopefully we see this improvement within the whole. Overall all 11 are better. The schemes are, are better suited to these guys but the individual playmaking is, is automatically an upgrade. They'll be better for that. Now hopefully we see more than that, just the individual playmaking but you know, that's there for sure.
Tex Homer
Nice bonus is.
Coach Dub
Yeah.
Tex Homer
Hollywood Smothers has emerged as a leader in that room. That's one thing the room did lose. Texas has a weird tradition of their running backs being leaders. Like for most teams running backs were not leaders on the team. But now again they're their giant leader.
Eric Naleen
I remember sometimes it leads Sark to
Tex Homer
keep people around an extra year that they shouldn't have because of their leadership.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, I remember talking to an offensive coordinator when Texas was in the Big 12 on a different school and I was asking him about his running back guys, guy's a leader and he said if you can believe that. He's like running backs are never the leaders. But I, I think we've seen it more and more. Maybe, maybe not even at Texas, but it just. I don't know, man. I've got a, I've got a theory that all these guys are better dudes. They're not as tough as football players used to be. They're not, you know, but they're. They're all just. I don't know. I think they're better people in general. I don't think that makes them better football players in general. But you know, they're. It just seems like there's. They're not as hardened as football players used to be. It seems like, yeah, good and bad of that.
Tex Homer
Like you said, you can become a leader easier when you're not quiet and angry.
Eric Naleen
Tuck that note away if you're like. If you see relief making a couple bigger players. Well, why plays? Why isn't he Getting more carries. But that note about leadership. Sark always rewards leadership, especially in the running back room.
Tex Homer
So that is a huge note for sure. Top freshman this season who was doing interviews and named Richard Wesley. I think it was on 3rd and Longhorn, but I think it was. Maybe it was the land. Of course, it was the Lance Jackson video that I watched. I think it was Lance Jackson that, yeah. Pointed out Richard Wesley there as a factor early.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, we wrote about that two weeks ago. Source thinks he's going to be the biggest impact true freshman on the team this season. They feel like he's going to get, you know, Colin didn't start as a true freshman. Trey Moore started, but Colin played a lot and, you know, Colin's tough guy to take off the field, but there's so many snaps and hopefully it's a long season that, you know you've got to play the backups. And Richard Wesley seems like he's right in line to get those snaps behind Colin Simmons.
Tex Homer
Awesome.
Eric Naleen
Yeah.
Tex Homer
Derek Cooper, who we mentioned too, or go ahead, coach.
Coach Dub
Guys, Wesley's built different from a mental standpoint too, man. I think he can handle a lot more than most freshmen can and it catches up to his athletic ability. Like. Yeah, I think him being on the field as a freshman, it's gonna be hard to keep him off. Right. Because he's gonna be able to digest so much. You can kind of trust him. You gotta trust as a freshman. That says a lot.
Tex Homer
He's not even an actual freshman. I mean, he should be a senior in high school. So it's like he's even younger than he should be.
Eric Naleen
You know, he has the same mental maturity as he has physical maturity, though.
Tex Homer
Yeah.
Eric Naleen
And he is. He is a locker room favorite. You know, he's outgoing. He's got a little bit of a different vibe. You know, he's a California dude. You got nothing but Texas guys and. And people from the south there. So he, he's kind of. He's got a good presence in there and, you know, they, the coaches are, you know, you don't trust, trust, trust him yet just because he hasn't really done it in games. But he's trending that way to have it early and he is going to play a lot.
Tex Homer
Then we mentioned Cooper a little bit when we were talking backs. Any little notes there?
Eric Naleen
Haven't really heard anything, you know, since, you know, the spring. And the expectations remains very high for him. There's just not now. He hasn't really emerged a little. He merged early, so there's not anything really new to say there. Wesley, I think, is emerging a little bit later after spring ball. And, you know, you don't really hear a whole lot about the backups to the top player in the country right away. Right. Everybody's talking about Colin Simmons but Jared Cooper. We learned pretty much everything we were going to learn about a in January when I heard he was going to play a lot. And I basically just heard it, you know, matter of factly, because I had. I thought he was going to take a little bit more time to get involved in the offense. I've heard. Basically was told I was wrong on that. And then he had a big spring. So there's not much new. We talked about Derek so much in the. In the early going that there's just not anything new to report.
Tex Homer
You know, I was talking about Mosley at number three, unlocking an offense. Okay, well, if Bishop's at number four at some point too, man, like, there's real potential here. I was. I was trying to hold back my expectations with him coming out of high school, even watching his tape, and he's beat me down, man. I think he's awesome. And I was like, that dude is awesome. And this skill he has, man, to set up those receivers, Damn. He's smart too, you know, and so I think the future is super bright for him. How much does he get?
Eric Naleen
Jaylen Waddle. I had people ridiculing me early on about having Waddle rated so highly because, hey, how can you rate a little receiver so high, man? If you can't touch the guy in seven on seven, you can't. You can't tackle him.
Coach Dub
Yeah.
Eric Naleen
And Bishop, go watch the 7 on 7 on him. He's wearing a Batman gear out there. They're still. Can't even dug on his cape, you know, I mean, it's the psychological profile of that of dressing up like Batman.
Tex Homer
Just cooking dudes is also a check.
Coach Dub
Yeah.
Eric Naleen
You would not expect that to be a guy that's going to emerge as like a team leader. Right. You know, like, it's. That's. There's a. There's a conflict there between a guy dressing up as Batman. You're not expecting him to be like a total team guy. Like, what's next? He's gonna have the whole team dressing up as Batman.
Tex Homer
Yep. Well, that's when we know he's really his influences. He's gained influence. Blake. Brian says my buddy that coached him there at Willis has been raving about him since he was a freshman. Yep. I tried to. I Tried to hold back. And then I saw this stuff that I was like, okay, this guy, it's. He's not just fast. Definitely not just fast.
Coach Dub
Yeah, it was a small stuff we saw like, during the open practices, right. Him keeping his head down late, then looking for the ball late. He had no gloves on, so it's
Eric Naleen
not like a prima donna.
Coach Dub
He's just a football player. I thought, oh, yeah, he's one. Yeah.
Tex Homer
Yeah. He set that safety up so bad. He had three different levels of speed and he. I mean.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, see, that's the thing. His setups work better than the average person because he can. He can move so abruptly. It's just any. He can change direction while still going fast. The guys. The safety didn't do anything wrong, you know? No, the guy's coming at him like a speeding bullet. You have to respect that. But then he changes direction so long and you're trying to. You're trying to regroup. It makes you look bad because of how he moves.
Tex Homer
He double faked his speed. So he came off the line slow, which is hard for young receivers. Young receivers, like, want to get to their spot. They don't have that patience. So he comes off the line slow. That's already a check for a young player. Then he starts to bait him down. He goes into his speed. Right now, I'm running fast. So that second phase, he pretends to run fast, gets him to really buy, and then he turns on his true speed.
Eric Naleen
So he lied to that safety in
Tex Homer
two different ways as a freshman. It was really impressive. All right. And then in 20, 26 cycle hits, the staff believe it will hit on all three wide receivers and all three linebackers. The linebackers love the receivers. The linebackers have been a welcome addition. Rocky Cummings had a great blitz path in the spring game. I was really impressed by him. As well as having a legendary linebacker name, which is important.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, that's the linebacker we hear the most of about. Honestly, these. Now these guys are, you know, it's a lot harder mentally to play wide receiver than it is linebacker. So we don't have kind of the same expectations immediately that we do of. Certainly Jermaine Bishop and Cohen Brown could play this year. Chris Stewart could play this year too, if needed. It's probably not going to happen, but all three of those guys are. Are. Would be ready for planes. All three of those guys would be hitting the field asap. If it was Sark's first year, right when they had to go to Xavier Worthy, just because there was nothing else but It's a whole different roster there. Linebacker, a little bit different timeline for, for guys to get on the field and make plays, but they love that group. And also we talk about the, the current wide receiver group, how it fits the templates perfectly, that, that linebacker group fits the templates perfectly too. They just need a little more time. But Rocky Cummings, I think that guy's going to be a star. And of course, we already have those expectations of Tyler Atkinson.
Tex Homer
Yep. Fit with Atkinson at Will Rocket Mike Cosi at Sam. Yeah, it's pretty. It's pretty. All right, so here's a note that I can. We'll talk about. Stark still loves 12 personnel. Despite the wealth of talented receivers, Stark still loves the schemes he can utilize in 12 personnel. The 11 and 12 personnel split still sounds pretty even. Hey, those, those tight ends block, let's do 12. If they don't, please have a third receiver on the field.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, well, I think he learned that lesson last year, right? I mean, I was screaming at the TV against Florida, like, get. You know, it just was not working. Yeah, he found the fix in, in, in Wingo and I think he knows that he can go to that ASAP if it doesn't work. But they don't have any expectations that 12 personnel is not going to work. You know, they feel strongly about 12 personnel as they do the offensive line in general.
Coach Dub
So.
Eric Naleen
Look, man, it's, it's one of those things that you're gonna have to understand are like trade offs. Right?
Tex Homer
The, the ski likes what it provides. It could even be he's setting something up for nine plays later. You know, it's like you have to accept that he's. That there's chess involved.
Eric Naleen
It's the trade offs and it's, it is the chess. So.
Tex Homer
Yeah, hopefully. Hopefully, man.
Eric Naleen
Yeah. Hey, they're always. Their trade offs will start. But he is, I mean, I'm not sure that he's a genius play caller anymore just because it's hard to be that in a head coach, but he is a genius play designer. There's no doubt about that.
Tex Homer
No question. Yeah. What he can scheme up the week before is remarkable.
Coach Dub
It is.
Tex Homer
Oh, Argentina lost.
Eric Naleen
What a beautiful day.
Tex Homer
A lot of fans are very excited that the World Cup's over.
Eric Naleen
My kid, my kid, my kid was in borderline tears.
Tex Homer
He was gonna say he's a messy guy, so.
Eric Naleen
Well, he was in full messy jersey and shorts. I had to play soccer during the hydration breaks at halftime and I kept telling him Spain was going to win and I didn't want to gloat because he doesn't know anything about all the, the. The other stuff about Argentina. And so he's still at his. He's still innocent. So I didn't want to ruin it for him, but when he asked me who I wanted to win, I just could not tell a lie.
Tex Homer
Yeah, man. I was even worried after the game ended that Messi might score.
Coach Dub
Man.
Tex Homer
He's him lurking towards the end and trying to make something happen.
Eric Naleen
That's 39 years old and still he was top five player in the tournament at 39 years old. Incredible.
Tex Homer
It's remarkable. But Argentina couldn't do nothing. They couldn't get shots on goal that Spain finally was able to get it in. But the in laws did ultimately decide to go with Spain. Argentina is that disliked amongst Latin American countries. They're just known as, like, completely stuck up, so.
Eric Naleen
Well, they're Europeans in there. Yeah, they are. They're Spanish, they're Italian, they're, you know, there's some German.
Tex Homer
And even the ones that are not Europeans will tell you that they are European, right? Yeah. Argentina has that mindset of like, what are we doing here?
Eric Naleen
We're supposed to be across. The Europeans have that, that mentality too. Like, all right, buddy. Yep.
Tex Homer
Yeah. My wife. I was. When we were going to Europe, I was like, you know, when we go to France, I heard they're rude. She's like, the French are fine. She's like, the Spanish are the ones that are stuck up because apparently they're. They're like that with the Mexicans. So it's funny to see all. You have no clue. It's just a white guy from Texas. All of these dynamics until you realize you're like, oh, they're not all best friends down there. There's a lot of them that do not like each other. The defensive schematic. Did I miss one?
Eric Naleen
Let's see.
Tex Homer
Yeah. Spencer Shannon, most improved at tight end, espn. They weren't wrong.
Eric Naleen
They were just early, right?
Coach Dub
I mean, early. Yeah.
Eric Naleen
Yeah. No, they were wrong because they were talking like Arch Mannings to go to. You know, they're. They're wrong. But he did have a good off season. You know, the first. He was. Might have been the first player I noticed at that first open practice this spring. I even talked to him, like, spencer, how much do you weigh? He's like 265. I was like, holy crap, man, he looked great. And that inline tight end. You need some size, you need some strength. You need some physical maturity. You need lower body strength. And, you know, they got him. He was a long, leaner kid and it just takes time. And I think he is going to have a good year. I think probably going to be a great year in 2027, but I think he's gonna have a good year this year. Certainly one where fans, you know, if you are stuck in your old mentality, if, you know, a lot of times, you know, guys become hard into what they, you know, their first impression of a player is we saw that with Christian Jones. Christian Jones is never going to be good. What are they doing playing him and Christian Jones his last year he might have been better than Kelvin Banks. You know, that was Kelvin's sophomore year. I think Spencer Shan's on track to becoming a really good football player. And I think we're going to see. We're going to see that this year that there are at least signs of it for 2027. He's going to be average at worst, I think.
Coach Dub
Yeah, everybody got their own timeline, right? To when a light bulb comes on, they become a complete player. So sometimes it's faster than others. That's all.
Eric Naleen
Tough position. And he's got a tough role being an inline blocker. I mean, you're like a left tackle. You're a run blocker. I mean, you're.
Tex Homer
It's a crazy position.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, it's hard.
Tex Homer
The defensive schematic breakdown is heavily skewed towards nickel. But they also have base with Brad Spence at that. Sam. So that four, three. But this is not surprising. I mean, that's modern football.
Eric Naleen
Right? It's been that way for a very long time. They it, you know, in the spring they had worked on a lot of bass. This is just kind of me chronicling it as it happens. They ran a whole lot of base in the spring. But I think they look at. They looked at the schedule and go, you know, there's not a whole lot of. They had 12 personnel teams that they were concerned about last year.
Coach Dub
Year.
Eric Naleen
Georgia's not on the schedule. Flora Florida is on the schedule. Right. But they last year I think they had more 12 personnel sort of offenses to defend. And that's where you want your Sam out on the field and Brad Spence. But Brad's still going to play. You know, he plays four different positions, so he's going to get on the field. But we won't see Sam as much as we saw it last year.
Tex Homer
Then you mentioned nickel rabbits. That's something you'll hear a lot throughout the season. Nascar. It just means whenever they're in that Situation. They're going to put more pass rushers on the field than they tradition personally would. Do you know that lineup yet across the line for who is exactly on Nickel Rabbits?
Eric Naleen
Yeah, we've talked about it. Lance Hero, Xena. And Xena is the. The tackle. I would. I'm kind of surprised that it's not Lancer.
Tex Homer
Yeah.
Eric Naleen
And then Colin, of course.
Tex Homer
That's awesome. Yeah, I'm excited for that. We will do a film breakdown the first time we see that get broken out. Another position with three studs. Guess what? The edge room is absolutely loaded. Best in the country. To get Xena back was huge. That was one I was super bummed about.
Eric Naleen
Got him back twice.
Tex Homer
Yeah. So hey man, that's a great thing. He adds a whole other element to the room. And then Justice Terry will get some time at 4 I as well.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, I will. Been writing a lot of articles that are kind of like foreshadowing what we're going to hear about or what we're looking for. He's got a chance to break out in August. He had a quiet spring because he was out and you know, he showed positive signs in the season. Didn't play a ton but when we did see him like, okay, well, yeah, that, that guy's going to be really good and you know, he's showing that. This off season. We talked about his drive. He was compared to Byron Murphy as far as his. His strength, power, but also his drive. Like some of these guys are just full grown men even no matter what age they are.
Tex Homer
He looks like that in eighth grade.
Eric Naleen
Yeah, right. He's a full grown man. Byron was a full grown man and you know that translates to defensive tackle. But he's got the explosiveness and the length to play four eye as well. Some of these guys we're not going to really know until later in August what, what to predict for him this season. But he's just too talented and too driven and you know, let's be honest, he's not. Didn't. Wasn't free to get. He's going to play a lot this year. We just. We haven't really got a crystallized understanding of his exact role this season.
Coach Dub
Scary hours, man.
Eric Naleen
Good lord.
