Anyway, big news yesterday on the recruiting front. Texas sees a member of its 2027 class change to the 2026 class and enroll in in time for the 2026 season. John Meredith, the five star cornerback most recently of North Crowley High School, decided to reclassify from 2027 to 2026, still ranked as a five star prospect and a as Sark mentioned. Sark Eric reported this basically like two Minutes before Sark set it on stage at SEC media days. Another Steve Sarkeesian recruiting splash at SEC media days for the second year in a row. But you had a little bit of the inside story on what was going on with Meredith and what allowed him to make a reclassification switch that not a lot of players do. And a lot of it starts back in January or at least during the winter when he transferred from US Trinity to North Crowley.

So one thing with Sark that was strategic, apparently he likes to do these things at SEC media days. Remember last year flipping JJ Johnson from Georgia and too. Yeah, well, yeah, well, yeah, they grabbed the commitment from Tyler and, and as Kirby was walking on the podium, he lost J.J. johnson. And so this was strategic again. And I think this is going to be something Sark maybe does every year. So just to add a little kick to the SEC media days. No. So John Meredith played at Euless Trinity. He transferred to North Crowley in the off season. You know, North Crowley is a, is a become a power. Give Ray Gates a ton of credit. He's moved on to college now, but give him a ton of credit. They've done a great job. And now that new staff is there. And, and so the guys at Trinity didn't like it. They checked. And anytime you're talking about UIL and Texas high school football, checking a box is a bad subject. And so that he got the daunted mood for athletic purposes, even though his mom moved. He got that, he got checked in that. And so what that does is, man, that, that cuts you off pretty quick. The UIL is pretty strict and there's, there's no room for fluff there. Like they, they, they're not, they don't give in too much. They did the same thing to Colton Nussmeier, the, the left ended quarterback out of Flower Mount Marcus that tried to transfer to, I want to say Denton,

one of the Denton schools. Yeah, Ryan.

And yeah, so they, they clipped that one as well. And so here's the, here's the interesting part, the backstory. So as soon as that meeting ended back in, what was it, early June.

Yeah, the DEC meeting, which is, is that usually district head coaches or athletic

coordinators before the uil, like the district will do a deal and then the UIL will do a deal. They had an idea that this wasn't going to work, this wasn't going to go through. And so what the coaches at Crowley did was they contacted some, some guys at Texas and said, you know what? We don't think this is going to work. Let's start, let's start pushing in this online stuff so he can graduate early and he can just go ahead and enroll now. That subject came up and it just blew up, like everything. A lot of people did a lot of work behind the scenes. You got to give Brandon Harris and the Texas recruiting staff a ton of credit getting this kid eligible, getting this kid lined up. But I also, you got to tip your crap. North Crowley, they never, this kid never played there, and they're still helping him. They're still trying to make sure that he, he, he had a spot because it was either going to be that or he was moving out of state. He's going to IMG Academy or something like that.

And so let's put a pin on that in just a second. But, but the, the fact that, you know, I think I didn't know that about the North Crowley coaches doing that to support John Meredith. And during all this time, his recruitment is going on in the backdrop. You know, he's taking trips, spring trips to go see spring practices. He's going to, you know, taking his official visits. Texas and Texas A M are battling for him. And of course, you know, he takes his official visits, makes his decision. I believe it was on Pat McAfee and commits to Texas. And this is just kind of looming in the background as a bird clock goes off behind me. You remember those from the infomercials? Yeah. I'll have to check what that is. This is all looming in the background as I try to get a little bit closer to the mic. And the question becomes, where is John Meredith going to play football this upcoming season? And we went through something sort of like this with Jane Blue, and I don't want to, you know, totally re litigate that, but the long and short of it was that he did not play football his senior season of high school.

And he turned out to be a productive college player. He turned out to be rosterable in the NFL because of his talent, because of his athletic ability. But there was something, I believe, lost by the fact that a very talented football player didn't play football. And you can be driven, you can have all this going on, but the fact that we didn't know where John Meredith was going to go to play football if he remained a 2027 prospect, that's, that's something that just, it lingers. That's not something that can be ignored. And if he was going to play football, it was potentially, you know, I, I, obviously these things were in motion as you talked about. But when you're thinking about it from a little bit outside perspective, maybe he goes to Nolan Catholic or Prestonwood Christian or Bishop Dunn, or maybe he goes to IMG and goes all the way to Florida and is in a, just a different place when it comes to schools. He's closer to, people he's around. And granted, I'm. What I'm saying is IMG is a great environment, but you're talking to commits from Michigan, Ohio State, Georgia, you know, all over the place. Don't get me wrong, North Crowley is talented, but a little bit different ball game. And you know what? Like, yeah, you want him playing football, but if he's playing football at a different level or which Taps is or out of state, man, that's, that's a little bit of something that I think for a, what was a very competitive recruitment would have given Texas a little bit of like. All right, we still got to keep working on this one.

Okay, fans, I'm gonna summarize what Joe has just tried to tell you, okay? If you have the number one corner committed to your class, you want to make damn sure where he's gonna be playing in the next six months, where he's going to school, who he's getting coached by, who he's hanging out with. You want to know these things? These things need to be answered. Every other recruits are answered. John Meredith wasn't answered in Texas, didn't like that position. And you know what, that's, that's a great thing for Meredith because this thing popped up, it went sideways on him fast. He got a little bad advice and so now he was trying to course correct and it took a village to come in and fix it, to help him out and get, and get it correct, get it right. He still could have played at Euless Trinity. That, that, that was still an option, but obviously that wasn't going to happen. And so no, when you've got a five star. Listen, if you have any top recruit, you're going to be, you know, paying attention to this. You got the number one corner in the country. He's six months from getting on campus. You were trying to say it in the best way possible. You got to play football. You can't just not play football. Jaden Blue is an outlier, okay? That is not the norm. You can't skip a year and just pick it back up and everything be okay. Like usually it doesn't work that way. And John Meredith's the top of prospect. I think he probably could roll out of bed and Go out and cover somebody right now. Like that's, he's so good at that. But they had to make sure they lined him up. They had to make sure they had everything ready and right. So when he does, so when he did get to Austin, he'd be good. Now they're going to skip that. And you know what, I mentioned this on the board and I think this is actually a great point that I'm going to just pat myself on the back on. I think this is better than him coming in in 2027, I'll tell you why. So much less expectation this year. Yeah, he's on the payroll for, for an extra for an early year. But my goodness, man, getting that kid in this program right now, it's like going to an img. You're, you're getting ready for college. You're, you're ready to start your next career. I think him coming in with low expectations is much better. Listen, if he were to come in next fall or early enroll and come into play next fall, he was going to be expected to play. You look at the depth chart, he was talking about being a starter coming in as a freshman or at least pushing for those type of minutes. Now those expectations are gone. Now he can just develop now. He can just be a 18 year old kid. I believe he just turned 18 a couple months ago. He can just be an 18 year old kid now. I think this is better for John's development, him getting in, being around a DB room of a Jelani McDonald, a Cade Phillips, a Jordan Johnson, rebelle a Kobe Black. You're talking about the who's who of great guys. Like he's in that circle now. And so yeah, you want to know where your, your five star corner is going in the next six months. They know that now. And also I like him coming in early. Sark said it best. There's no timetable on this. He doesn't have to play now. Like he can develop organically. And I gotta tell you that, that, that was really refreshing.

When we think of reclassifications, Texas fans have gone through several Quinn Ewers.

It's the new norm.

Yeah. And this one's somewhere in the middle of the, this one's different in Richard Wesley because remember Wesley, start a year,

start 12 to 18 months before you graduate.

Right. This one is, this one is a little bit obviously a lot more sped up. I completely agree with you with the fact that, you know, he is going to be playing football and he's gonna be doing it at Texas. And look, he was a five star prospect. Still is. Five star prospect. He's still going to be costing a pretty penny. You know what? But you have him in your program. It is easier to retain players in your program. He's 18, so it's not like he's 17. It's not like he's 19. He's, he's the right age and you get five to play five. I don't think we're under any illusion that John Meredith is going to be at Texas for a full five years.

Not happening.

[Joe Cook]

And I don't, I don't think we're under any illusion that he's going to come in, learn the playbook and move ahead of guys like Samari Matthews, Grayson Phillips. It's, it's just not happening. But he's there. He's going to be in the program learning how it operates. And you don't, like you said, all those worries about will he flip, what's he doing? Like it's all gone. So I think that's a very big positive when you look at it from the class perspective. I think Texas finished with the number 10. 2026 class. 5 stars are always good when it comes to class rankings. The Longhorns moved up to number seven, so they now had four five stars in that class. Well, maybe I misspoke.

Him, Wesley and Dia.

Yeah. And I got to make sure I sort it by the, the Rivals ranking instead of the the industry comparison. Let me double check that real fast. There we go. Rivals looks like 2,5 stars with Meredith and Wesley. Diabell was just outside on Rivals, which they took away.

Diabell's fifth star.

Yeah, he didn't play. He didn't play much.

I'm coming for you.

We don't need to re litigate that. But still, 2020, now I remember.

2026 class moves up a little bit. Pair that With a Great Portal Class, 2027 loses its.1 of its cornerbacks drops a little bit in the rankings. I think they're in the top five, and now they're down to eight. When you look at cornerback in 2027, right now they have Montre Jackson committed, and they also have Brandon Sherrard committed. Do they need to go and find another cornerback to replace John Meredith in this class? What do you see as maybe next in Cornerback recruiting in 2027?

[Justin Wells]

They don't have to get one, but you need to have a contingency. You need to have a backup plan. You need to have a corner that you know you can flip when you make a phone call like that. That needs to happen just because you've got to be on your toes with this class. Like in the nil era, we're learning more and more. You're seeing less flips, actually, later on in the cycle because there are agreements now with agents and things of that sort. But with him, like, it's good now. I think you're. I think with this, you. You cap, you. You're gonna have to just protect yourself. That's all it is. Yeah, you got an extra corner in the room now, but you have to watch yourself. Like, I. I like where Texas is at corner right now, but you need a backup plan. You need someone. There needs to be a couple guys that they can bring in that they could flip if they needed to. Because this class, like I said, you know, you got to keep your head on a swivel. And you know, there are players in this cycle that other schools are trying to flip. It's as simple as that. Like, without giving away every too much. Like there. There's guys that are, you know, could be flipped. And so at that position, I would.

I would.

I would have a backup plan. I would make sure there's another corner somewhere, somehow that wants to be on this roster. And I'm sure Mark Orfe. I have zero doubt Mark Orfe will Muschamp and those guys won't find that guy.
