We're here with Ian Boyd today talking a little bit of 11 personnel. If you've been paying attention to Inside Texas, and you'll know that there's some reports about Texas maybe running some more 11, a little bit more three receiver sets. And so we're going to ask Ian, you know, what that means and exactly what they might look like for Texas. So, again, thanks for Ian being here. What do you think he ended when you got the report? You know, when you. When you heard the news from Eric, you know, a little bit. Eleven more 11 personnel, which is a lot of what Texas kind of. Maybe it's not the whole reason the Texas offense, you know, changed its production level last year. Starting the middle of the season with a little bit of a change on the offensive line, a little bit more quick game. What did you think when you heard the news, Ian?

[Ian Boyd]

I was excited. I heard, you know, some of the details of what they have planned this coming year, and some of which is, you know, I'm gonna try to keep proprietary, not tip off all Texas's opponents on exact play designs, but it's exciting. It's exciting. I. I prefer the spread in general. The spread tends to put more of an emphasis on the quarterback in his decision making and his playmaking. And when you have a guy like Arch Manning, I think that's a good thing. I. Sark's love of 12 personnel makes a lot of sense. We can talk about it and the differences for Sark. But, yeah, this team, I mean, you already have. They have like five or maybe six receivers that could have started for last year's team because everyone is, is everyone is either added or back from last year. So they're either better players that they added to the roster or it's the same players that are a year better. And so they. When you have that much talent in the receiver room and you have Arch Manning, then it's like, yeah, Massunas, Shannon, these guys might be nice, but I don't know if you want them to be like the tip of the spear, the featured part of the offense, when that means you have to bench and Emmett Mosley or Jermaine Bishop or someone like that.

That's well said. And again, that's the first thing that, you know when the reports start coming out a little bit. Saw some tweets from Rivals immediately, hey, that means Texas's tight ends are about the same. Same as they were last year. You know that that means they don't trust your tight ends because Sark loves 12 personnel, he's going to want to run it. What are your thoughts on that? Is, is there any truth to that at all?

[Ian Boyd]

No. The rivals have been desperate, desperate, desperate. They're like, look at Sark calling out his players and saying he needs to clear out cap space. And look at Sark saying he's gonna kick his former players butts. And you know, I wouldn't want to go to Texas if I were that guy. This is the kind of stuff you would always hear about like Miami in their heyday or Alabama under Nick Saban. It's like, well if you go to Alabama you could get cut. So I wouldn't go there. I'd go to my school. You know, get, get your money and get someone that's committed to investing in you. It's like, no, kids don't, that doesn't work on high school kids. You don't tell high school kids, hey, if you go to that school and you're not good enough, it's not going to work out for you. Well, what's the kid gonna think if they're like a four or five star player that's any good and has any pride? Well, that won't be me.

Exactly.

[Ian Boyd]

Are you saying I should go to your school? Is like, it's like you shouldn't try to sell your program as a safety school for top talent. That's just a very self defeating argument. And yeah, the kids love it when the coach is confident and authentic. So the rivals are, they are, they're just reeling right now. There's all this text, all this Texas coverage drives them nuts. Sark creating fun quotes drives them nuts. Yeah, it's. If the team is as good as the program thinks they'll be and as I think they'll be, it's going to be a bad year for the rivals and it's going to be fun to monitor on social media.

Last couple of seasons been a blast to monitor on social media in that regard, you know, and again we're far removed from the cries of seven win Sark and you. But I mean it's, it's so funny how the narrative is shift in regard to, and with, with the rivals, at least in social media, but moving on, moving on. So no, no qualms though for you with, with Texas's tight end room and what you've heard as far as their progression, you know, so you think this is, hey, we need to get archmanning, you know, maybe a little bit more comfortable in the spread. Then also you open up the, the option to have a 4 receiver or a 3 receiver set with Mosley on the field or with Jim Randy Bishop on the field or like you said, they're deep. There's five or six deep guys that are probably all gonna fight and earn some playing time on the session. Any chance, you know that, you know, there's any, you know, zero personnel. Do we ever see any four series or not? Sorry, empty sets. You know, we saw it a little bit last year. Not too, too much. But before you, after you answer that, man, what were some of the things that you noticed in Arch Manning last year? You know, the big difference is when Texas was running a lot of 12 personnel and the deep play action shots compared to when they went 11 personnel starting really in Mississippi State during that comeback and went heavy quick game. Just some of the things you saw in him as far as comfortability.

[Ian Boyd]

Yeah, I don't think they need to play with. You should always play with a tight end if you have one. Because if you, if you take your tight end off the field, your run game menu of run plays is like reverse decimated, right? Like you, you, you know, decimating is like the Roman term for. This is like a deep dive topic. But like a Roman unit didn't perform and so they'd take every 10th dude and execute him for cowardice or whatever and that would whip the rest into shape. So you would reduce the unit by 10%. Right? That's what, that's where the term decimated comes from. If tech, if you play without a tight end in modern spread football, your run game is decimated by like 90, you're cut down like 10 left. And if you can't run your quarterback regularly, it's not, you can't do it. So if you take the tight end off the field, you're telling the other team, hey, guess what, there's like a hundred run plays that you don't have to worry about anymore. So that's why Tom Herman didn't do it. That's why Cirque doesn't do it. You want the tie. Even if you can flex the tight end out, you can flex the running back out, you can get into four and five wide spread sets, but you want to leave the tight end and the running back on the field to do it so that A, the other team can't just sell out against the pass and B, they can't substitute on their own. You want them to have to have run stopping personnel on the field or else, you know, it's not as effective.

No, I'm with You man. That's why I again 11 personnel is my, I mean preferred personnel for all the football because you can, you can do so many things you said like you saw so many of your own concepts and you still full plethora of passing concepts. Where do you see. So again, Jermaine Bishop, Ryan Wingo, Emmett Mosley. If you had to pick today, who was going to be the. Who represents the tight end in the and the one for the 11 personnel?

Like, what do you mean?

Who starts the tight end? You know, in your ideal 11 personnel offense for Texas, who or rather who does Ian Boyd want out there?

[Ian Boyd]

Ideally it's Nick Townsend. If he's ready.

Damn.

Because he's a freak.

Yep.

[Ian Boyd]

And he's a. In my opinion, the ideal 11 personnel system, you have a tight end who's like a good blocker and then like a passable receiver that knows how to line up in different spots. The star catching receiver is not as valuable in college as it is in the NFL because if your guy can just. If you have like Andrew back that can flex out to different spots, right. You can manipulate the matchups and put him all over the place and set your receivers up for success and just throw to your receivers. As long as he will catch a pass if it hits him in the hands and knows how to run routes from multiple spots, he doesn't actually have to be that good of a receiver to be a major force multiplier in the passing game. So I think Townsend can hit that level this year. And then also when he does, if he does catch the ball when it hits him in the hands, that dude is like, he's as fast as a receiver.

What type of progression are you expecting Townsend to make as far as like his understanding and nuance throughout the route tree?

[Ian Boyd]

It should be adequate. He really just needs to know how to run like a stop and a go and like stock block on screens and stuff like that. If you can do those things, well, that's already. You're already like, you're already in the. In the black with profit. So here, here's the trick on 12 versus 11 for this season. The reason that Sark loves 12 personnel so much is because it lets him run the ball when he needs to without using spread run tricks where you have to give the quarterback a pass option or give the quarterback a run option. Sark doesn't love to that to be the case because a, he doesn't want to injure his quarterback running the ball. If you're like sitting on a lead and you need to run the ball, and the only way to do it is to use the quarterback. That's awful to Sark. Circ's like, I don't want to use my quarterback that way. Get him hurt. Protecting a lead, that doesn't make any sense. And then he doesn't like RPOs when it's like if you're sit again, if you're sitting on a lead and you want to run the ball, or you're like, in third down or something. Sark doesn't want to run an RPO if he can avoid it, because now you're allowing the defense to force you to complete a pass rather than just being able to jam it in.

Right.

[Ian Boyd]

Obviously, Texas hasn't been very good at running the ball in those situations, but philosophically, Sark wants to have that as the option. If you play with one tight end, then you have your five offensive linemen, and your tight end equals six blockers. If the defense is in nickel, which they all are, then they have, like, four defensive linemen and two linebackers, which is six guys to block. So you have six blockers for six defenders, right? And you're set, you're in good shape until they decide we really need to stop the run. Or you build a lead and they're like, we can't let them run off the clock. Then they bring a seventh guy in to help outnumber your run game. They'll bring, like, a safety, the nickel, the com, bring the corner off the edge, whatever. Now they have a guy that you don't have a blocker for, right? And then that's when you get into, okay, either we have to read somebody with the quarterback and make the quarterback run the ball, or we have to turn the running back into a blocker so the running. So the quarterback can run the ball, or we have to give the quarterback a pass option that punishes them for bringing the seventh defender. And not only. So now, not only have you lost some agency where it's like, now we can't just run the ball when we want to because we have to deal with this extra blocker, but you also get into a much more complicated world of option football. And you could be facing a defense that majors in, like, multiplicity and answers for option football, Right? So you can't just have. Oh, we'll just have like, one or two answers for that situation. No, because the defense might have, like, 20 counters. They may have, like, a bunch of answers for your one or two plays. So you have to major in it. And if you're majoring in that, you're not majoring in the other stuff Sark wants to do, right. If you add a second tight end, they can bring an extra guy and you still have a block. You have seven blockers. Now if they bring an eighth guy, then you know, they become a little more vulnerable to the pass. In a way it start, it stops becoming winning math for them in the way that it is against. So that's why Sark always likes to have a 12 personnel option. The difference this year is that you could hear him immediate ace. He's like all our receivers are like 6, 2 and £200 are bigger. And what he didn't add is that they also all will block and Emmett Mosley will block. So now we have five linemen, we have a tight end at six blockers. They got their four defensive linemen, they have the two linebackers, that's six defenders. Then they say we're going to bring our safety, our big safety. And now what? We bring in Emmett Mosley in, we bring in Cam Coleman, we bring in Ryan Wingo, bring him. All of them play in a bunch. Now they cannot bring extra defenders that make a lick a difference because our receivers can block all of them, right? So that's the trick to this season is the ability to bunch in the receivers and then block their extra defenders with receivers. And if they bring in big guys, if they're like, well, maybe Ryan Wingo can block our safety, but he sure as heck can't block our an extra linebacker. Well, they're fine. Then we spread back out and now your linebacker has to cover right Wingo in space.

So let me ask you this. You know, because ideally, you know, and again, if you do see a lot of 11 personnel for Texas, I Think that you could still see Sark, you know, in the second half of the game, assuming he's built leads or he scored a flurry of points. Done. Mission accomplished for first half for Texas offense. You see a situation where he, he switches, he goes and really tries to lean on the 12 personnel second half of games, like you said, to run some clock to keep. Keep his quarterback from having to get involved in the mix, from keeping him having to make, you know, decisions, maybe just keep control of the game, protect the football. Just really, how much per 12 personnel do you still expect to see?

[Ian Boyd]

Probably some for that stuff. I mean, they don't, I mean, they, they probably don't need it because the receivers are big and can block, but they'll probably use it anyway if the tight ends are good enough. And the Titans are probably going to be quite good at it. They. Because they, and they. Not only is their tight end room like a little bolstered by another year of experience and adding Massunas, but they also have like, the top three tight ends are all more disposed to blocking. Like, Shannon is a big, natural inline blocker. He wasn't great at it last year. He got better by the end of the year, but that's like his more natural disposition because he's so long and big. All right, Massunas is a blocking machine. That's his game. And then Townsend as a true freshman, most of his splash plays were as a really fierce blocker in the backfield. So they, they probably have more questions about the tight ends as receivers than they do as blockers at this point. I'm, I'm not. I think they're going to be fine at receiving. They were surprisingly good at it in the spring, honestly. But they're these, this is a blocking group

now going back to 11 personnel. You know, what are some of the concepts you think from the run game? You know, is it, is it outside of, you know, we know SARS going to run some wide zone and, you know, some outside zone, obviously probably still mixing the inside zone. He's around it for so long. Any other concepts or any other passing concepts, you know, that, you know, I know you obviously can't give away too, too much, but any other things that you personally would like to see or that you expect out of Texas, you're

going to see lots of motion because so like bunch formations.

It's like bunching out of it or bunching in or motioning out of the bunch sets or motioning into a bunch set. Both.

[Ian Boyd]

Both. But motioning in is awesome because like if you look at a defensive playbook, usually it's like in case of bunch, do one of two things. And like defenses don't have like a big menu of options for bunch formations instead of like a couple answers, right? So if you, and then if you motion into the bunch and you do it like they have 15 seconds, at 15 seconds before the play clock ends, the helmet comms turn off. So if you wait till 15 seconds and then you motion in and out a bunch, then the defense has whatever answers are on their wristband or that they've memorized or that the coach can scream from the sideline.

That's a good point. I've, I mean, I've always thought about the 15 second communication, you know, cut off, but never really thought, wait until that community education cut off motion into your set. Makes a lot of sense. Carry on.

[Ian Boyd]

I had a coach tell me as soon as they made that rule, he's like, it's going to become a mad scramble to communicate before and after the helmet comes. Now it's going to be the, that's going to be the new game of cultural. That's the real reason that teams don't tempo as much. Most teams don't. Most of the lightning fast tempo teams are not doing that breakneck speed tempo anymore. Because if you go insanely fast, the defensive coordinators in there and they've got all these systems now for communicating with their players, what to do, and the

faster you go, the more time they have to do. So

Well, I mean there's more time between that 15 second cutoff, you know what I mean? If you did go fast. So still the mindset of like, hey, we want to line up fast, see exactly where they're at and then, you know, get into our set later on.

Yeah, wait. The waiting. Waiting, I think Joe used to call that the wait and see offense. Like they're hurry up and wait or I can't remember, they like race up, line up and then go, yeah, not now teams. Now some of the best play callers will wait and then do all their shenanigans after the 15th. Like Alabama does it that way with Deborah all the time. Okay, so you do that and then you just force. When you have hybrid players and you use different formations and you use motion late in the clock, then you force defenders to have to think without their coordinator holding their hand and you have to. And you force teams to play like super limited choices. They can't get exotic, they can't try to dial up the perfect blitz to kill you they have to just play whatever one or two things that they know by heart from fall camp install and then if you're sarc you can figure out what those one or two things are so you can like motion late and then call your play that's designed to perfectly stress what you already know the other team is going to have to play and so yeah hybrids are the game now. Texas has wide receiver tight end hybrids on the roster this year and they are going to be really formidable because of that.

I love it and again we haven't even mentioned the backs and what they can provide for this offense with you know the obviously the help of some big big wide receivers and blocking and then hopefully an improved offensive line and then sounds like we're going to put them you know a little bit more advantageous start to the season as far as scheme than we had last year. Kind of banging our heads against the wall with the 12 personnel again. It's been funny and always good to get your your insights. I learned something new today. I really the inside 15 minute motioning and lack of communication. I love that anything any other tidbits or things you want to share about 11 personnel or what Texas has in store?

You know you asked earlier about Arch being comfortable there.

Oh yeah. Yep.

I we going into last year our we had this perception of arches like this amazing deep ball thrower which he was but they couldn't really run the ball or protect even with extra tight ends on the field so it didn't really do that much good. But then we found out that when he is moving around in the pocket and he's going like 123 and he has multiple options on the field because you have multiple more receivers. He's really darn good at that too. Right. And he cooked a couple teams like Vanderbilt and Mississippi State really stand out with that kind of stuff. So I'm excited to see him do more of that which hopefully he will.

I I expect a lot of it man. Really really excited just to see how much you know everybody like you said a year through the offseason a year experience. There's a lot of guys and that tied in group that I know they're going to be out hungry ready to prove Archman and clearly the same thing these receivers a lot of a lot of tools in the disposal for Steve Sarkeesian.
