We're here for more practice intel and notes from Eric Naleen as Texas has completed practice number four last night under the lights at dkr. There you go. Yeah, right. All right. Well, let's get into it. Boss man last night, 11 o', clock, big time notes again. More updates this morning. Let's go with the quarterback position first. How's the weekend been for those fellas?

[Eric Naleen]

Well, it was only as good as his offensive line, which means it was a rough practice for Arch. I mean, in general, it was a rough practice. He did well within the constraints. If you were at the spring game and saw how much fire K.J. lacy was under, you know, you have to manage your expectations based on the conditions on the field. Arch was under a lot of pressure. He actually had a pretty good practice, all things considered. He started off really well, more accurate than he had been in early drill work. You know, we saw him miss some early throws. Even during our media availability, he was much more dialed in on that. But in Team 11, on 11, he was sped up quite a bit. The pass rush was withering. That, that, that D line, man, they're, they're so explosive. They're so quick off the ball. They just created a lot of problems. He had a scramble. He had a, he had one nice long scramble, extended a couple plays, and then he was let down by a long throw to, to Kali Clockett in the end zone that got dropped. Good coverage, great throw, Just couldn't convert the play. Unfortunate. Lockett had a good practice otherwise, but that's, you know, that's one that's going to sting Arch. I would say overall did a pretty good job, but again, it wasn't like he was out there dealing because the, the D line was getting its way up front.

I mean, what type of challenge does that could prevent, you know, provide for, you know, a Texas offensive line, Eric, that, of course, a lot of people in inside Texas are going to ask questions about, you know, said this first day really where the defense won the day. Is there a lot of offensive lines that are going to struggle with this type of defensive line, practice settings?

[Eric Naleen]

Well, I mean, everybody is especially. I mean, we're going to see it throughout the season that teams are going to struggle with this. The problem is, I mean, you know, we think they're strong and powerful up front, but it's, it's their quickness is their big advantage. And then Muschamp really takes advantage of it with a lot of line stunts and games at the same time, the offensive line is trying to build cohesion, and so this is. It's a tough climate for them. We know the cohesion and gelling together and all that. I'm so tired of saying it, but it, it needs to be understood and expected that it's still going to be a work in progress. Even going into Ohio State, they're trying to build all that while under a ton of duress. So I'm, you know, I'm not super surprised, but I'm surprised it took this long to hear. You know, this was a practice number four. It was the first time we really heard the defense dominating. To me, that says that. To me, that says that must. Champ was dialing it in and Sark probably wanted to get a true barometer of where they were, you know, the first three practices. Sorry, is. Wait, are we. Are we. Are we that improved on offensive line or is it the D line? Well, last night showed them they still have a long way to go.

Well, let's talk about where they were compared to a year ago regarding the offensive line. Is their confidence that, you know, they're definitely. Yeah, good.

[Eric Naleen]

Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, the expectations are way beyond what they were last year. It's a foregone conclusion they're going to be better than last year. That's not even. But the D line is going to be better than last year, too. And so they're going up against that and the D line is going to be more aggressive. You know, we. We weren't hearing about as many stunts and line games and all that as last year. Justice Terry certainly wasn't having the camp that he's having now. Just again, Terry's. Terry's. Like I wrote in the article, Terry's emergence is doing this offensive line no favors. They already have to put a governor on Colin Simmons. And then in this practice, I guess we might as well just talk about the D line while we're here. Is Lance Jackson had his best practice of the, of the spring or of August. So you've got a number top five draft pick in Colin Simmons. You got Justice Terry who is playing up to his five star potential. You got Lance Jackson who was a five star and looks like a three year player. And then you know, we're not even talking about Xena Umizulu yet. He's big and quick. Then they've got 12 defensive linemen that they can play in a, in a credible conference SEC game. So it's an embarrassment of riches. There's waves of them. They're not just strong, they're quick. And yeah, the offensive line is still, still finding its footing. That's to be expected.

To be expected.

[Eric Naleen]

Yeah.

I mean rolling out 12 guys is definitely going to be a luxury and conference play if that, if that comes to fruition. Let's go back to the other side of the ball, the wide receivers. Obviously everyone on the planet I saw, I believe saw the Cam Coleman catch. Just talk about that group as a whole and then if you want to get into the great debate and share your thoughts on whether that ball is likely tipped or not, feel free.

[Eric Naleen]

We know the ball was tipped. Anybody has. I, I question whether or not everybody's watched a football fly through the air if they don't know that that ball was tipped. Kind of mind numbing. Watch star come out and say, no, that ball was a tip. That ball was tipped. That ball was tipped. It was by a linebacker. I'm just not sure which one.

Okay.

[Eric Naleen]

And by the way, we knew that play was coming out. I even said when they showed the Grayson Littleton interception, I said don't be surprised if Cam Coleman highlight makes its way out. So yeah, we, we knew about that place. So we probably have an idea whether it was tipped or not. Well, you can't sit here and say that Arch Manning was fighting for his life and then say Coleman went off because that didn't happen. You know, if, if it's, if the offensive line was getting beat up in team, then you know that the wide receivers weren't all that productive. Actually the most wide, the most productive wide receiver was Ryan Wingo who caught a couple good catches outside and then also showed that speed to get up the field the yard yards after catchability. He's having a really good, good camp so far. He had been consistent with his hands. Exactly what you want to hear with him. That's, that's what we've heard. Mosley got dinged up a little bit in, in, in the practice, but it's not anything that's going to linger. Not, not, not in line with some of the concerns he' but yeah, it was a, it was a quiet day for the wide receivers. Now the traits were on display even though guys weren't making big plays. You know, Jermaine Bishop had his best practice as far as looking more comfortable a wide receiver after playing cornerback all summer. Cam Coleman. The traits are on display, but we didn't really see the finished product because, you know, the pass rush was so, so brutal.

Yeah, I mean, of course that all goes hand in hand. Let's talk about the tight ends. Eric, you know, you mentioned over one of your updates last night that you know, all four of these guys likely step on the football field. Go a little bit more in depth on those guys and how they've looked so far in camp.

[Eric Naleen]

Well, you know, it was. They're having the same problem blocking the D line that the offensive line is having. So you have to, you have to grade on a curve here. It was, it was more quiet day for them. You know, obviously they're going up against it too trying to block the the same NFL players that the offensive linemen are. Spencer Shannon made the most plays of note, had a couple of good catches. You know, he's a credible receiver. He's not just a big lumbering tight end that looks to when he catches the ball. He's looking to get up field at least make guys tackle him. He's fighting for yards. He reminded us of, you know, why there was some noise about him in the spring and he's going to play a very big role this year. Massunas had a good practice two practices ago. Townsend looked fine. Not a lot to report on. The most to report on the offensive line is or on on the offensive skill position is that they're hindered by the offensive line and archmanning not having much time.

Yeah, it makes a lot of sense. But again, been impressed so far with some of the tight ends throughout the first few days of camp. Feel like we're get a little bit more out of Mike Massunas than originally thought when he came over in the portal. As far as the receiving threat down the field. And again guys, just in case you missed it, there is a new update over on Inside Texas this morning. Eric, we have a part 2 more updates on this team in practice from last night at dkr. So make sure you're going to check that out if you haven't got to do so yet. But Eric, you talked about the defensive line a little bit. It seems like they kind of won the overall day. Made life easier for pretty much everybody on that defensive side of the ball. But how much easier was it for the linebackers? Biles had a lot of, a lot of praise for the first couple of practices but when the D line's eating like that, man, does anybody else get to eat now?

[Eric Naleen]

Yeah, that's what I said in the article is that the defensive line ate all his food. You know this is a very scheme friendly. This is a very friendly scheme of linebackers and you know, but if the D line is doing it's. It's true job up front and really causing havoc then you know there's not always plays for, for Biles, you know, he's cleaning up juice car cleaning up wasn't nearly the playmaker that we'd heard in previous practices. But that's not a bad thing. It's just, it's just a all downhill of what the D line was doing

up front as well said there in it. And again I'd love to hear what we've heard out of Justin Jude's Cryer so far. Let's go to the secondary, Eric. You know, it seems to me I've been very impressed through the first couple days of secondary when defensive line is really getting a lot of pressure on the quarterback following the trend line here. They probably had a decent practice back there on their end. His life was probably easier.

[Eric Naleen]

Yeah. Positive feedback loop. Right. There's ways that the corners can make it easy for the, for the defensive line and vice versa. The defensive line made it too easy for the corners. They were beat even on that locket pass that was deep. They, they still had good coverage. It should, they should have been beat, should have been completed but they still had good coverage. So you know, no real concerns about the corners. We're really hearing some good things about Kobe Black right now. He's going to play a lot. You know, in the Kobe Black info reminds me that that they're going to mix and match their, their defensive players to maximize against whatever the offensive, whatever the offensive side of the ball is showing them. You know, they just had spurs coach Mitch Johnson in and one of the big things he pointed out was getting all his guys on on the court in the right situations. Right. And taking advantage of what they can do, their strengths. If you've got a safety like Kobe Black that's going to be very good in coverage coming over from corner, then there's certain teams you're going to want to play them against and then. But if you've got a downhill team, let's say Jaden Boss coming to town. Yeah, maybe that's one that you want Derrick Williams in the box, you know, so they're going to mix and match these guys. We talked about Bo Masco getting a looks at Nickel recently. You know that if he's their best cover guy and the other team has a really good slot receiver or they're moving there, you know, Jeremiah Smith getting looks in the slot, you know, maybe they want him to travel. They're going to hunt their matchups a lot. Justice Terry is probably not going to be a, a starter on the depth chart, but he's going to play starter snaps depending on what the, what the opposing offense is trying to show them.

Of course, man, you got to play matchups depending on personnel and it's a really big luxury that you have this many guys not just on the defensive line but also on the secondary, you know, where you can tinker around and find the right matchups for you weekend and week out. Eric, anything else for us regarding, you know, Saturday's practice at dkr?

[Eric Naleen]

No, I think that's about it. And just to be clear, those were Justin's notes last night. He got those up at a lot. Well, I posted where he got those at 11 and then I had some this morning and then a subscriber had some thoughts. You know, some of those practices have a little, few more people, a few more eyeballs on them than, than others. So with tons of information over there, go check it out.
