And, you know, a lot of players looking good. I think the strength and conditioning is clearly a good sign right now. But let's just go over some of these positions, go through the. The groups, quarterbacks, of course, where we're going to start. And there's not much question about that order. Who's at the top of it?

[Eric Nilin]

No. Well, we have to say it's a shorter, shorter window than we had last year. Last year, the first practice was like 45 minutes. We couldn't believe. Like, did they forget about us? This year they did not forget about us. And we, we were out of there pretty quick. So we had to take notes in a hurry. Luckily, there was a lot of us there. We were able to divide the workload. But, yeah, I spent a lot of time watching quarterbacks almost by accident because they were down there by the defensive tackles for a while. Then I followed them on towards the end of the window. You know, Arch. Arch looked the best when it was right. Obviously, to me, looked like the most talented. When the ball would go, it seemed like his passes were gaining velocity. The closer they got to the receiver, really picked up speed. But KJ Lacy, to me, was the most accurate, most consistent on the day. That's not the same. Say he's the better. There's any type of controversy, but he came out pretty hot. And watching Diabell. Diabell was the most erratic and, you know, but when he put it together, a good rep, it was. It looked like how it's supposed to. It looked like Arch. But there were too many misses. Some. Some misses were. Were pretty far off. But KJ Looked really good. That's what you want if he's slow and steady and consistent as your backup and accurate. Oh, man, you can't ask for anything more than that. And then Arch, obviously, it seems to me like he has a little bit of rust to knock off. But he had. He had a number of good throws as well. We've got some on our Twitter. Deep balls of Ryan Wingo. A crosser to Ryan Wingo that I think everybody wants to hear about. That one would have gone viral had I gotten it and then. Yeah. But overall I think the quarterbacks looked about as expected given the fact that it is the first day of practice. There's going to be some rust. But I was impressed by kj.

Yeah, that's clearly the position where you just need the reps over time there. And KJ being that accurate, exactly what you need from your back quarterback. And the pecking order is pretty clear to me. Arch was 1 KJ2, DIA3 and then MJ Morris kind of does that practice squad reserve. I didn't get much chance to look at the running backs and observe them. What did you see from that position group?

[Eric Nilin]

Yeah, again, what I saw, it was limited because I was trying to see as much as I can. It's really hard to catch everything in these, in these windows. So many. You got 100 guys flying around. Derek Cooper, I mean, it looks explosive, big. Justin said he looked like Adrian James. And I said, man, you can't say that around Ricky Williams field. Obviously Edrin was drafted in the same draft as Ricky, but big, explosive, first off the bus type of guy. Ryan Niblett really impressed me because he looked more like a shifty running back than I had recalled in the past. And we, you know, we've heard that in the, in the spring that he looked more like a running back. And then we know he's also kind of like a wide receiver as well. He looked good. Relig Brown quick. I mean, exactly as you expect. Didn't see much of Hollywood Smothers or James Simon. They're running on air. I will say Michael Terry. Everybody loves, loves asking about Michael Terry. He had a cut and go rep that looks exactly what you would expect out of a guy built like him. He looked like, you know, Chris Warren playing for the Seahawks back in the day.

[Evan Veith]

Yeah, Cooper and Terrier are really ahead athletically and you might think from a true freshman and a sophomore. You know, I didn't get to watch as much of the running backs either alongside the quarterbacks. But I, I heard a lot of good about how Cooper looked and how Brown looked. And Malik Brown was taking some punts as well, which of course nible it. That's his primary responsibility, shooting over the wide receivers. It's funny, Eric, I don't think the name that I heard the most is the one that people are going to be as tuned in on. Cohen. Brown got a lot of praise and that, that's who consistently. I heard you, Tyler, just whoever it was talking about playing really well.

[Eric Nilin]

Yeah, Cohen Brown probably had. He was tied for the best day for. For what I saw. And you could hear the coaches praising him a number of times, too. He caught the ball well, got a deep ball fast. You know, he's. I mean, he's made a lot of noise this offseason. It's just he's got guys in front of him that are going to make it harder for him to get on the field, but he lived up to the hype that we've been hearing about the most. Probably the most consistent wide receiver I saw was. You know, I don't even want to say it, but it was Ryan Wingo. He caught everything. It looked smooth. Was turning up the field after the catch. You know, athletic and big. You know, it's so funny. I was watching. I was watching Colin Simmons from a distance, and at first I wonder, I had to look if it was Wingore Simmons again. You know, it was about, you know, 80 yards away, but he is big and athletic and all that. If he can just be consistent with his hands, the sky's the limit.

[Evan Veith]

Yeah, I mean, that's. That's the end of the day for Wingo and Cam Coleman spent a lot of time, you know, he wasn't part of the special teams group. It was pretty funny how Simmons and Coleman were kind of herded over to the side. So we got to look a little bit at him working reps with the. With the quarterbacks. He's clearly that wide receiver one mentality going for him. Tight end group, definitely one that you want to hear about because it's kind of the. One of the few position battles I'd say is on this team. Townsend, Misuna, Shannon, what was sticking out to you?

[Eric Nilin]

The most intriguing thing is going to be from practice reports later in the season where we hear how Stark likes to mix and match it. I mean, he's got four guys he's going to play, and all four of them can play in some sort of sequence or they could play together. So it just depends on what he's trying to do. Schematically. I didn't see Spencer Shannon catch a rep. I saw him. He ran by me and he looked really good, obviously big and physical. He's had a good off season. Emory Winston looked like a freaking fire hydrant. Like a 6:3 fire hydrant. He's so big, but he moves. He has a good change of direction and mobility for a guy with his build. And obviously he has really natural Hands. Nick Townsend is noticeably bigger, just bulkier a lot carrying a lot more weight in his upper body than he was this time a year ago. Saw him a couple good reps, good hands reps, which is what you want to hear.

I've never really heard about him having trouble with his hands, but it's not like you hear about the natural ability that Amari has. And then Massunus looked good on a couple of reps too. I watched him. You know, he's a credible receiver. You know, when Texas got him, everybody thought it was just to bolster the inline blocking game. But he is a credible receiver and he looked good out there today.

[Evan Veith]

Yeah, and let's not beat around the bush here. A lot of people want to hear about this offensive line. That's, that's a big question mark coming in. And Woodcrest in the chat asked, do they look physically bigger? They've been lifting heavier this season. I know we got to see Lawrence Seymour for the first time. Trevor Goosby looks 6 foot 8, 330 pounds. He's really looking bigger physically. But what was your observation on that? What were your takes on that?

[Eric Nilin]

Well, yeah, we were kind of, you know, we were, we were commenting on Goosebie from across the street waiting to go in. Dennis Field, you know, you can see him from a mile away. Yeah, they do look more mature. They do. And Siani helps that room as well. You know, somehow he looks Siani. You can tell just the way he moves. He's got good run blocking mechanics. I will say this, Lawrence Seymour is obviously, he's noticeably smaller than the rest of the guys. And we, we've actually been hitting at that. And I think what makes him looks even smaller is he lost some bad weight, just leaned up some. So he's not the biggest guy in the world. And we know that Jaden Chapman was the first left guard today and Dylan Sikorski was the number two left guard. So right behind me, you know, this is Seymour's first practice at Texas. You don't just put those guys at the top of the depth chart. He's going to have to go earn it on the field. But Goosby looks looks amazing. We all expect that. It was tough for me to put eyes on, but you know, overall they do look bigger and stronger. But everybody in the, pretty much everybody on the roster looks like more physically mature. You could look at Xena's brother Ziki, who's a walk on safety. Now of course, he doesn't have the normal walk on genetics, but he, I mean, that guy looks bigger. If you see him standing next to Jonah Williams, you don't know who the five star was.

[Evan Veith]

Yeah, I mean I do think that also with the depth on the O line and Justin was even musing about this feels like the Coleman brothers and Sikorski and Kojo now healthy, there's a lot of size behind them and I think that that's going to be a bit better this season. The number of guys.

[Eric Nilin]

Kojo I'm really excited to hear about. He looked good physically, you know, after coming off the long layoff with the injury. He actually was, you know, lost some weight. He looked good in the spring. You know, there's a lot of people that think he's going to make noise before it's all said and done. His time at Texas. Yeah.

And I don't think that's crazy to say. He was kind of the primary backup left tackle to Trevor Goosebie today. And, and a lot, a lot of players looking big and we saw Pierce Patterson getting some good reps and that was kind of a late add in the cycle. Before we transition over into the defense. is in the description Onto the defense where I saw most of my reps and I think we both kind of came to the same conclusion today, which is one that a lot of people are going to really like and really want to hear. Just as Terry might have been the best player on this football field today, I'm the most explosive player in the D line room, which you'd expect and you'd hope from a guy who was playing, you know, at 270 pounds last year. But this is Justice Terry at 2:9 weight, looks bigger, but also that same kind of freak athleticism. We've come accustomed to one of the bag drill, footwork bag drills that I posted on my Twitter that you can go find. He was just moving out of the blocks and getting a big hit on Terry. Who else in the D line room? We're impressing you.

[Eric Nilin]

Yeah, well, Terry's first off the bus. First off the bus, you can have a guy by each position. Derek Cooper, running back. But on the team it's, it's, it's the Justice Terry and you mentioned his quick feet that plays a big part of it. We had an insider on our board, a very dialed in commenter was talking about Justice Terry's improvement this off season. And manager looked like you're watching him move and you know, he was, he was getting through the drills with urgency. He was working hard. When they, when they switched parts of the field to go. Go away from the actual practice field, he was the first one over there. He was moving with urgency. I love everything I saw about Justice Terry in Garfard still still has a giant midsection, but he moves very well for that size, you know, and it's just, hey, let's keep that guy under 30 snaps and you know, let that size and movement skills maximize. You know, you want to keep him fresh. He definitely looked far. Every time I see Alex January, he looks better and better eager. Yeah, he's, he looks. And there's some toneness to him. He looks athletic at. For being a defensive tackle. Justice Terry was by far the one that really stood out to me. And one one freshman Elijah Ali, a true freshman that was late to Texas. I had to check my roster a couple times just to make sure I wasn't off on this. He looked like he was entering his third year of college. He just got to campus in June, so I'm anxious to see how he moves and the reports, but we don't have expectations for him this year. But certainly he looks the part. More so because he was a late addition. We didn't know him could move back and forth between California and New York. Didn't have a really good fit for feel for his ability. And I'm intrigued. Yeah.

[Evan Veith]

And I also like some of the looks I got from the sophomores, Myron Charles and Josiah Charman. Charles moving well. Sharma is. That's another big player. And, and you make the point on gfar, like who, who's going to be Able to move that guy solo. I don't know. That's a. That's a big player. Ed Dream was one that was a little bit harder to see just because of where they're positioned in. In on the field. But Zeno Mezulu, I mean, that guy is one of the most athletically gifted players on the team, but it's also something that's been developing over time. And just every year he looks more and more the part. And I think that's someone who's really going to be maybe not the true starter with Lance Jackson, but competing for those reps and maybe right behind Colin Simmons as well.

[Eric Nilin]

Yeah, he's grown into that neck. You know, when they signed him, I said, guys, it's only a matter of time. Look at the neck on this guy. And he is. He's big, man. He's big and lean and dense and a bunch of words you don't normally want to call a guy. But he's those things and it translates on the field. And we talked about his improved physicality as he's gotten stronger. There's a reason they feel comfortable putting him in that Ethan Burke role that slides inside on. On. On passing downs. I'm really excited to hear about him. Didn't put my eyes on Lance Jackson. Did see Colin. Colin was working away from the team for a while without a helmet and working on pass rush moves. You know, obviously we don't have any current concerns with anything there, but, you know, you look at Xena and it's just been the guy's got NFL written all over. I can't wait to see him put it together this year.

Yeah, breakout season even in less reps than a true starter seems on the cards. And I will also add, like Richard Wesley, that's a guy who does not look 17 years old in what should be a senior season for him. He's as big or bigger than pretty much everyone in that room. And yes, for someone who asked, Colton Fossick is does exist. He was there getting reps in, so.

[Eric Nilin]

Oh, it was funny watching Colton Bostick and Jonah Williams run out on the field together. We said, oh, man, get away from each other. You know, there's a lightning strike. It's going to hit one of these.

[Evan Veith]

Yeah, the boogeyman's coming. Yeah.

[Eric Nilin]

But Richard Wesley, he's going to. I feel confident that he's going to end up being Colin Simmons primary backup this year. So despite his age, he's physically mature, he's mentally mature. He's a must. Champ favorite.

[Evan Veith]

Yeah. I don't see any question about him being able to control contributor year one. Let's move to the linebackers which is one that I, I was able to observe pretty closely and for me the takeaway was. And that's not to knock on anyone else here but Machine Biles just, he's the quickest, he's the fastest, he's got the best feet of anyone there. Someone who, you know they were doing just, you know, these aren't difficult reps but they're doing drills where you backpedal, move to your left and then get thrown a ball for an interception. He goes and just snags it one handed like it's no problem. Little highlight play that I wish I'd gotten on camera. But this is just someone who's going to be an all star at Texas and I don't think there's much question about that. Really fit into the system well immediately going to play that will linebacker role. Maybe play some in that mic inside as well. But Biles for me just popped off the page.

[Eric Nilin]

Yeah, he was the one that, you know and those drills do serve a purpose. These guys, you know, it's the cream of the crop as far as the genetic lottery. And then there's some guys that even go beyond that. We talked about justice Terry a few minutes ago. The same thing with Rasheen Biles. I didn't get to see the linebackers the whole lot. They were a little bit out of my view. But you know, hey, I'll be back tomorrow and I'll put my, my eyes on, on Justin Crier. I did see Triumphy Smith when he arrived on the field before he put his jersey on. He looks a little lean up top still still lacking the bulk you typically associate with playing Mike linebacker. But he's got some complimentary traits that can help work around that. I'll catch. I'll pay more closer attention to linebackers tomorrow.

[Evan Veith]

Let's finish it off with dbs. And this was someone Eric that I, I was, I was right there with them. And I think two guys really stood out to me which would be Kobe Black. And you know, Black was fully playing with the safety room, no in betweens. This was a true safety on this team and he was actually, you know, pecking order doesn't really matter that much in reps there. It's going to be decided in real practice. But he was right behind the two starters of Derrick Williams and Jelani McDonald and he probably had the best feet out of all three of them and everyone in the room when it came to the shuffle drills where you're flipping your hips and moving backwards, I mean, I think Kobe Black is going to really make an impact this year. And then Kate Phillips was someone. Some athletic plays in the back of the end zone, they're going up to kind of on air get interceptions. And he was, you could tell that the defensive back coaches were happy with him because he really looks like someone who's about to break out this year.

[Eric Nilin]

Well, you know, Kobe Black has a huge advantage comparatively going up against safeties because he is effectively a cornerback playing safety. He's just got sort of that safety size and physicality and he's got safety intelligence. So they're going to give it a shot, see if he can maximize there. But you're right, loose hips, cornerback feet. There's a reason that he looked good at quarterback last year against A and M. Kate Phillips can't wait to see what he does in year two. I deem him a three year player. He's just, you know, if that's true, we're going to see some of that this season. And then Bo Masco, he's got the technique of a Wiley veteran that you expect. I'm excited to see him. And you know, I watched that room a little bit more closely. I did watch Jonah Williams and it's funny, they do this back pedal zigzag drill, flipping their hips, moving their feet and you know, everybody's going through the drills and they're, they're showing urgency and he's gaining on people as he does it. He's sudden, he's got these long strides. He's so quick in his feet. I'm excited to see what he does this August.

[Evan Veith]

Fully healthy. Jordan Johnson, Rebel. You mentioned the fire hydrant.

[Eric Nilin]

I don't want to get tackled by him.

[Evan Veith]

That, that is a guy who's going to thud you when he gets, gets you in the box. And you know, saw John Meredith for the very first time dawning number zero, I think the Texas heat, which obviously he's from Texas, but just the, the summer practices, the first reps in fall camp got to him a little bit with some hydration issues. But you know, I think the DB room for me, really impressed. Let's get some questions there before we get off here. Did Muschamp drop any new creative uses for cuss words? Nothing creative, but he was cussing out some guys in this practice. I mean, it was near the end, right as we're kind of getting shoot off. He knew the media was starting to leave. So he could really unleash it. A few F bombs, a few what the H is out there. He was saying some football terms so yeah he was going in on some of these like 1st, 2nd year DBs though their techniques on the plays. So yeah, Mustang was, was very noticeable. Eric, this question is a great one for you. These guys ready to stop the self inflicted penalties. How do you work on this in fall camp? What do you actually do through strength and conditioning to make sure these self inflicted errors aren't happening?

[Eric Nilin]

Well, you penalize them in the heat if they mess up, you know, you make them run for it. They had a, you know they had a referee on hand today. I'm sure when they did broke out in the team they were calling penalties, you know. Look man, I, I don't know how it's going to going to play out. They did things this offseason with chronicled here a lot. A lot of drills were started on snap count rather than whistles, that sort of thing. But you know, I don't know man. Let's see how it looks in Ohio State chronically. Steve Sarkees's teams have been over penalized even when they're experienced. So you know, I can't put a guess on it. It's like trying to guess if a kicker is going to be good or not.

[Evan Veith]

Yeah. He's talked a little bit about how he's changed up the way that the punishment system works and more room dependent on that. So we'll see. It's a hot enough. A little too hot. You can see this, the fan in the background running on us.

[Eric Nilin]

Oh man. Honestly it wasn't. It wasn't. It could have been worse. We had some cloud cover and we had a breeze. It was a lot hotter last year. We 45 minutes.

[Evan Veith]

Yeah. Good question for you Eric. Who'd you say needs to have a strong camp? Haven't heard a lot about tight end so maybe that's position group. What would you say?

[Eric Nilin]

Well, tight end has a question as far as if anybody's going to emerge as the man but obviously they've got a group that they can work in situationally. You can go big with two, two guys into person 12 personnel. With Shannon or Massunas you can go smaller receiving based. You can go single with Townsend and try to throw it to him. You can go single with Shannon and try to run it. So they've got workarounds there but nobody's emergence like the true pass catching threat though all four of those guys are credible receivers to varying degrees. Yeah, I would say whoever wants to emerge at left guard. Yeah, you know, that's a real competition. You know, it's a real competition to Anthony Smith has to have a good August because he missed spring ball. It's one thing to know what you're supposed to do in the classroom with Mike linebacker. It's another thing to diagnose and play fast. So you got to think fast before you can move fast. There's a, there's competition across the board, but not all the competition is for starting reps. You know, it's you want to be at all costs. You want to be safety number four because you're much more likely to play at safety number four than you are at safety number five.

[Evan Veith]

Yeah, I was just going to say some of the depth of linebacker and safety are maybe spots that are that really could use a big camp. It's more it's not a lack of talent, it's who can take that spot.
