All right, welcome to the reheat. Thanks for watching inside Texas guys, joined by Joe Cook, of course, still on vacation. Man, I hope my vacations can be as long as Joe's one day. But we're here to talk a little bit about SEC media days. It is day one in Tampa Bay, Florida. And hey, it's a, it's a pretty little setting. I'm here in Tampa. You got nice water right across from the entrance to, to the venue and it's pretty. And so today you had it, of course Oklahoma. This morning you have Missouri going as well. Texas last baby Thursday, long time before Texas is on the podium or Sarks on the podium and our players are representing. So we're going to talk a little bit about, you know, Greg Sankey, what we want to see from Texas and maybe a little bit about a guy or two that talk got on a podium today. Joe, we'll start with Greg Sankey. A couple of eye opening comments there. What are your thoughts there, man?

Yeah, a lot of stuff that was kind of echoed from SEC spring meetings back in Destin, you know, talking about the, the bill which the SEC and it said in its current form they're not a big fan of. Yeah, you know, some of the things he said are just, you know, bureaucratic minutia. But he was asked about, hey, you know, have there been conversations about the SEC breaking off and Doing its own thing. He said, yeah, there have been conversations, more or less. He said, yeah, it's, that is a real thing that got pulled by, you know, I got an ESPN update pushed to my phone because of that. That's, that's a big deal. Because, you know, one of the things with this act is that, okay, you know, if three quarters of the FBS pools their money that, or wants to pull their broadcast rights, then they can do that. They don't need the SEC to do that and they can do it. You know, the SEC can exclude those other teams, etc. Etc. So the SEC kind of says, well, what if we just leave? What if we do our own thing? And I think if you, you know, think about the idea that Texas also, you know, is now five years in to being in the SEC or five years into that, you know, story breaking at SEC media days in 2021, like, they're in the club and that's a big deal. He had some comments on officiating that I thought were a little bit interesting. You know, he's going to protect his guys wearing the, the zebra stripes. And he, but he said, you know, I, I try to be transparent in a lot of different things. You can't be fully transparent and officiating because, like, from the conference's perspective, what if it's revealed, you know, like, okay, you came down and you reprimanded this officiating crew for this, that and the other. They only do that in extreme circumstances. You know, we've seen that happen before. They don't do it for, you know, I think Sankey kind of said, you know, you don't see a player removed from the starting lineup or get his scholarship pulled because they make one mistake. You know, if the ball goes through your legs at shortstop, a good manager is not pulling you until it goes through your legs about fifth time in a row. So the officiating aspect, I think was the other, really the only on field topic he touched on during his big spiel. And I like listening to Sankey, but there's just not a whole lot of football coming from that man's mouth at these types of events. That's what the coaches are there for. You know, you got Brent Venables, you got, I got, got it on TV over here. Over my shoulder you got Will Stein, you got Elijah and quits. Who is the fourth one?

Is it, is it Tennessee today?

It might be Tennessee. Pull that up. You know, all these coaches, all these coaches talking. You know, you can try to find the Texas Angle. The biggest thing I heard, even with Oklahoma speaking today was Ahmad Hardy is on track to play and that's one of the best players in the sec. That's one of the best running backs in the country. Texas has seen him do decent things against Texas when he was at Ulm. They're going to have to go to Missouri to, to play him, and it sounds like he's on track to be ready for that game. So that's, that's someone who can make that whole offense function in a way that, you know, if, if he wasn't there, you're putting it all on a new quarterback in Austin Simmons. You're, you, you're relying on an offensive line to that has Kaden Green to block for somebody who you just don't know the quality of. That's the biggest thing I took away. At least today. You know what I'm trying to find, like what we learned from media days, day one, that'll be the biggest thing I, I put down and probably what I put at the top of the story whenever I get to writing it.

Yeah, I mean, again, a little bit of tongue in cheek for me when Greg Sankey brought up the word transparency. Just talking about SEC officiating and then again, love to hear it for Ahmad Hardy. I mean, that's fantastic news, dude. I mean it's a pretty quick recovery from a pretty big ordeal. And again, for Missouri football in general, you root him for the guy first. But for Mizzou football in general, that's, that's huge for Drinkless and his program. But if you need the full quotes from Greg Sankey, make sure you're coming over to Inside Texas and just for $1, guys, you're joining, becoming a new member and then half off of your yearly sub after that. But yeah, again, full quote, full coverage of SEC media days. We got SEC media day one thread going right now. You'll see a few quotes from John Mateer, a few again, full context from or full quotes from Greg. Thank you. Rather again, several days here before we get into Texas. So you're going to have again today. I believe it was tenness and it made some, some fun questions being asked. I'd love to hear Will Stein talk today. A lot of confidence losing out of that young man. That was probably the thing that made me smile the biggest when they asked about him and said, you know, what gives them confidence that they can, you know, basically win games under him at Kentucky. And he's like, well, me, you know, basically he believes in, in himself and I think it's a fun pairing, of course, ex wildcat there, but yeah, with the Texas guys, man, a couple of days. But is there anything you don't want to give some Steve Sarkeesian that, you know, you're really kind of looking to hear at? Are you just excited to hear him talk about here in a couple days?

You know, it's interesting too, because on Sunday, and actually ongoing right now in Houston, is Texas High School Coaches association convention that somewhat, you know, preempts media days, oddly enough. And Steve Sarkeesian is going to go through the car wash. You know, he's got the big stage, he's got a session with the local media. He's kind of, he, he has an opportunity basically with anybody who can get him on radio row, SEC network, I bell hop on, fine, bomb, all that stuff. And he usually, I don't want to say rehearses, but he's got his talking points down and he had some of his talking points down when it came to, you know, stuff like Cole Hudson and Lawrence Seymour, Jermaine Bishop. And we're also just at that point in the year where every time you get in front of him, you ask, well, how's Arch doing? How's Cam Coleman doing? So we're getting further and further down the roster to talented players all the same. But I'm. I'm not really interested in what Sark has to say about a player unless it's something just eye openening. I'm really curious about his time working with Will Muschamp. I know when we got the opportunity to work, to talk to him in the spring in, in stuff that Eric and company have reported over at Inside Texas, he's got the, he's got his fastball. I think that was the way that Eric worded it. And even in our little sessions with the, you know, viewing practice, he could tell he is all in on being, you know, a defensive coordinator. He even said, like, I don't really have aspirations to be a head coach anymore. And I think it is fair to wonder, you know, from an outside perspective, like, hey, this is someone who went from head coach at Florida to defensive coordinator at Auburn 10 years ago to head coach at South Carolina and then, you know, forfeit. I don't want to say forfeiting, but like letting responsibilities go to others more and more over the past couple years at Georgia because he wanted the opportunity and Kirby Smart gave him the opportunity to go watch his son play at Vanderbilt, be on the sidelines and suit up. And so you kind of Wonder like, okay, is this guy who did not succeed as a head coach twice in the sec. Yeah. Still had great defenses. Like, is he, you know, cashing a check, he's getting paid a lot. Is he going to be somebody to, you know, that actually keeps the side of the ball. That was pretty good last year for Texas and not identified as the problem by a lot of people from outside perspectives. Is he going to be able to make sure that that unit elevates from. From what was a good but not great year like we saw in 2024? We know and we've heard that all signs point to it being yes. You know, he is still coach Boom. You don't lose that nickname and you don't lose that type of energy and passion when you really like when you're, when you're Will Must Champ. Like, it's pretty self explanatory, I feel like. But I understand why there may be some apprehension. It's like, well, it's been 10 years since he's been the titular defensive coordinator. He's stepping up into a role at a place that one time wanted him to be the head coach. And he's doing it in a league for a team that's going to have one of the most challenging schedules this year because of all the good offenses they face. So I guess I want to see what Sark's perspective on it is. You know, what, what it's like having that head coach of the defense, how that's changed things for Must Champ, how that's changed things for Sark. I, I'm very curious to know how that is going and, and to hear it in Sark's own words.

Yeah, that's well said. I mean, we've heard, we've heard him talk about the players for months. You know what I mean? We've heard him talk a little bit about Must Champ, but I mean we. What he thought Must Champ could do for this team. He's been around a little bit. Now we know, like as you just said, Joe so well, he spent a ton of time in the sec. We're in SEC country. We're about to get a lot of questions about Will Must Champ to see Steve Sarkeesian on Thursday. I'm excited, man. Again, I'm a plan on asking a question about it myself and just finding out exactly how it's all working is start getting kind of the freedom away from the, that end of the field that he's kind of, you know, mentioned and desiring so excited to hear about it when it comes to the players.

Man, let's talk about the players. You got Arch Manning, we'll start with him. Of course he's probably gonna get asked a few questions. Joe, I can imagine there will be a few people in the room expecting him to give a ton, a ton of big answers though.

No, he, Arch is really good at one liners and self deprecating humor that obviously runs in the family. But you know, you ask him about what was it like last year, he'll say something along the lines like well I didn't really play that well. I refocused and my teammates helped me like he is very much. Yeah, he may be a celebrity quarterback and you know we, we feed into that, that's for sure. But he's also just, you know, he's number 16 on the Texas Longhorns and is a teammate and that really comes out with his media availabilities. You know he'll probably be asked about Heisman hype and do all the long and short of it is like he'll give you a good one liner but you're not going to get like these very, very lengthy answers from him because he, he understands there's a lot of people probably trying to get that gotcha viral moment from having Steve, from having Arch Manning like say, you know, whatever it is, like oh yeah, I played like crap last year, which he's done and he's given that viral moment. But there, there is a lot of gotcha when it comes to, you know, a lot of outlets that cover Arch. I don't Think it's, you know, very ill spirited. It may be from some places but I think it's just trying to capture, you know, your place in the algorithm thanks to Arch Manning. So you're really not going to get a whole lot from him. I feel like you'll get a lot of positive. I'm curious to see, you know, what in his own words working with Cam Coleman is actually like what he, you know, he's, he's usually very honest about himself and it's like hey, I need to get better at this aspect or this aspect. But like you're not gonna get like oh yeah, you know, growing up and going to Ole Miss and you know, but, or going to Ole Miss games and Tennessee games but you know, actually you're not going to get like these long introspective spiels from Arch. You'll get some good answers, he'll answer your question, but you're getting about two to three sentences from him.

Yeah, you know I tried really hard to think of a, you know, try to construct a question that could get two to three sentences. That's, I'm happy with that. I think that's the maximum that you're gonna get, you know, excited for it and you know, well said man. He, there is a lot of humor involved. I think a lot of times he's probably laughing harder inside at some of his replies than he is on the outside. It's creative with it. What about Colin Simmons, Trevor Goosby, anything that you're excited and looking forward to hear from those two young men?

Yeah, those are two guys I'm actually really, you know, looking forward to hearing about because they are thought to be first round level talents. So you, you maybe you think Goosebies the best offensive tackle in the nation. I, I can hear arguments a bunch of different ways. I, I think Simmons is the best defensive end in the nation. I don't really want to hear argument other, other ways those guys have to go against each other and yeah, that's a football cliche, iron sharpens iron, all that type of thing. But like what's that actually like when maybe two of the best players in the sport actually have to go against each other on a daily basis? You know, what's, what's Trevor telling Colin about his, his rip swim repertoire? What's Colin telling Trevor about like okay, are you getting your base at the right spot at the right time and what's that like considering their personalities. Both, both are very confident. But, but Goosebie, at least in the media settings he seemed a Little bit more easygoing. Confident. Easygoing still. Whereas Simmons is not afraid to be confident in your face about it. And I, I think that's, you know, that gets him to the point to where you know, he's posting an Instagram story with Julian saying, named as a starting quarterback last year on his own story. Like that's the level of confidence he has. And yeah, sometimes you have to. He's usually pretty good at backing it up. I'm wondering how those two help each other in those two for their own sides of the ball, influence the locker room. Just because, you know, you don't see something like that super often at this level. Two guys who could be first round picks. It's a testament to the recruiting, to the development. And those two guys work. Those three guys, they're all, all their work done over the course of their careers as well.

Said, man, again, it is totally cliche to say iron sharpens iron and yada, but imagine when those two are lining up, you know, Monday through Wednesday, Tuesday and Wednesday, when they're really going at it against the practice and knowing whoever you line up against Saturday is not going to be as talented or skilled as a guy that you're lined up against and working and battling with rep in and rep out for a couple days every single week of practice. So it's definitely a big deal, man. Good point that, Joe. Mr. Cook, this was fun, but that's going to be it for Mr. Cook, myself and the reheat. This was fun, Joe. Thanks for doing it, my man.
