was just so good to see everyone i had such a good time i love the fourth of july and i really hope you had a good one too that being said i think it's time to get into today's episode trigger warning this episode includes discussions of suicide so please listen with care here is something that has happened to almost all of us at some point you have someone in your life who you think you get along with that could be a friend a neighbor a coworker and even if you're not super close you believe that your relationship is good overall until one day when you somehow find out that this person actually doesn't like you they can't stand you they've been friendly just out of politeness but deep down they want nothing to do with you this can hurt to realize that someone doesn't like you especially if they don't even tell you what's annoying them or give you a chance to fix it however this is a fact of life nobody is universally loved we all annoy people grade on them or make them uncomfortable and that's even true for friendly warm outgoing people like edward tudor now he was thirty seven years old in twenty eighteen and edward had been through a lot of challenges in his life but he was always trying to stay optimistic and look at the bright side see edward was a cancer survivor he had beat the disease back when he was just twenty years old so almost twenty years earlier and ever since then he had kept his head shaved as a reminder of what it had been like to go through chemotherapy and sadly now almost forty his own mother was pretty ill her outlook wasn't good the doctors are like she's probably not going to survive for much longer but edward wanted her final months to be as happy and full as love as possible so in twenty eighteen he actually invited her to come live with him in his house in florida the timing worked out well because his longtime roommate a woman named jen nichols moved out around the time when his mom got the diagnosis meaning edward now had space but he spent a few months renovating the whole place to make it as comfortable for his mother as possible this was just the kind of person edward was he cared about other people around him he was actually at this point in his life working on getting a bachelor's degree in nursing edward wanted to make an entire career out of helping other people get healthier and advocate for themselves in hospitals and it's also worth noting that edward lived in a very tight knit neighborhood in holiday florida he'd actually been living on the same street since two thousand nine it was a quiet but friendly block the sort of place where everyone knew the other people on the street even if they'd never exactly exchanged names or contact information they'd recognize each other they'd say hi when they were on walks during major storms and hurricanes everyone in the neighborhood would check in on each other make sure they were okay and overall the vibe of his neighborhood was warm and friendly that's why he'd stayed there for so long or at least that had been the case for most of the time that edward had lived there but things had changed about four years earlier so in twenty fourteen when edward's next door neighbors actually moved out now for context this was years before his mom got sick while he was still living with his roommate jen now at that time someone new moved in next door a man named q key now q key went by joe which is what i'll be calling him to now joe's edward's new neighbor and they don't exactly click at first in part it was because joe was already a pretty stressed out person he had spent most of his adult life in florida he worked as an it expert but by the year twenty fourteen joe was fifty six years old he was newly retired his father had recently become very sick and joe had spent a lot of time in his home country of china taking care of him but when his father passed away joe actually returned to the united states just to have serious issues with his next door neighbor a guy named john now this was all before he moved in by edward this was his first place he moved home to apparently joe's next door neighbor john was bullying him and it became bad enough that joel moved out strictly because of this neighbor and the stress of selling his house and resettling somewhere new was still better i guess than putting up with this treatment so that's how joe then ends up in holiday next to our main person in our story edward essentially he had beef and drama with a neighbor that was enough to make him relocate to edward's neighborhood except almost from day one joe and edward also had a sort of weird relationship it's not like they never openly fought but things they weren't friendly they were a little tense for example one day not long after joe moved in edward actually got into an argument with his roommate jen and it wasn't anything big or serious it was just a disagreement but edward raised his voice at one point and then a few minutes later and jen were surprised to hear someone knocking on their door so jen answers and it's their new neighbor joe and he said he had heard the argument and he'd come over to apologize now of course jen has no idea what he's talking about or why he was saying sorry so she's like huh and joe said he'd been working around his house the night before and he'd been turning lights off and on and making some noises and today when he had heard edward yelling he'd assumed it was because he was angry because about all the lights and the sounds now jen was surprised to hear this she's like no nothing you did started this this has nothing to do with you they hadn't even noticed whatever he'd been doing the night before and now was assuming this argument was about him they're like listen new neighbor joe you have nothing to worry about but over the years there were a lot more incidents like this joe seemed to consistently misinterpret edward's behavior he assumed edward was angry at him over things that didn't really matter or issues that had nothing to do with him like edward loved dogs he owned five of them but you know sometimes they didn't behave sometimes if the dogs did something they weren't supposed to do edward would get frustrated yell at them and apparently joe could hear the shouting from his house especially on warm days when edward had his windows open and he'd always act a little quiet and skittish after these outbursts almost like he was scared of edward or he thought edward had actually been mad at him or yelling at him i don't know it added tension to their relationship but edward didn't understand why joe was always so nervous and upset around him joe never told him why he was acting like this and for a long time edward didn't even make the connection between the yelling at his dogs and joe's weird behavior plus joe did a lot of other things that really didn't make sense so it kind of made it easy for edward to just shrug off this say oh i i think my neighbor joe's just an odd person for example at one point joe installed a huge security system in his home including lots of cameras but when he set them up he didn't point them at his house the way you would if you're worried about a break in all of the lenses were pointed at edward and jen's place now this is weird this is weird behavior as a neighbor it feels to them like joe wants to track them except jen and edward don't really say anything they're like he's just a weird guy we don't want to make the relationship even weirder or worse and in late twenty seventeen jen actually knew she was moving out anyway if you remember at the beginning of the story edward's mom is going to move in so in twenty seventeen a year earlier she figures it would be easier just to leave rather than be like hey why did you put these cameras on our house and as for edward he was like i can't say anything to him it's a little weird intense i don't want to rock the boat more like are the cameras annoying sure but i'm not doing anything so he ignores it after all he had a lot of other things on his mind around this time remember his mom's medical situation he's in college courses and as of tuesday january twenty third twenty eighteen he was now thirty seven years old and he had a big test coming up in one of his nursing classes and even though edward knew the material pretty well he actually invited a friend over to study with him and her name was daikita cox now dikita and edward had met in school and they would study a lot before tests so that day just like usual daikita came over in the morning edward let her into the house and he left his front door unlocked because he did this a lot it was a safe neighborhood now for a few hours dikita and edward reread their notes in their textbooks they quizzed each other on tricky and challenging topics and at one point one of edward's dogs crawled into his lap to cuddle with him everything is normal and then at around noon or so edward got up and walked toward the front door he doesn't say why or what he's doing daikita definitely hadn't heard a knock or the doorbell she just figured okay maybe he's letting one of the dogs out and that's what it is in fact he still had a dog in his arms the one that he had been cuddling in the chair earlier so edward walks out of the room and daikita stayed where she was and just kept studying she didn't think much of it until she started hearing edward's dogs barking and then a sound of a gunshot according to her then edward began screaming quote dial nine one one dial nine one one now daikita doesn't know what's going on but she doesn't argue she pulls out her phone she calls nine one one and is like hey i'm at a friend's house i just heard a gunshot she didn't get very far though in the call before hearing even more gunshots now by this point daikita is terrified she was afraid that someone was breaking in something had happened to edward maybe the shooter's in the house in fact while she's still on the phone she actually runs and finds a place to hide and then tries to be as quiet as possible because she doesn't know what's going on here the operator asked her what's going on are you still on the line and dikita could only give one word answers whispering and praying that whatever was going on the shooter wouldn't hear her oh thank i need to shout again please send somebody oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god i'm just kidding i'm just kidding please don't let my friend die so she manages to tell the operator edward's address and that there was definitely a shooter in the house and then the dispatcher warned her okay don't come out of your hiding place just stay safe except this is when now on the phone her thoughts kind of catching up to her d is like but maybe edward's in trouble she didn't feel good about staying out of sight and hiding while her friend was maybe hurt or in serious trouble and needing her help so dikita told the operator no i'm gonna go find him the dispatcher's like no no no no just stay hidden but daikita didn't listen she took a few more seconds to build up her courage and during that time another call came through to nine one one now this was a different neighbor a person who lived across the street from edward they had seen something the operator didn't get into detail about what the neighbor had said but they assured daiki to listen but we just got another call the shooter isn't inside anymore someone saw them leave you can leave but i still think you should stay where you are just don't go outside so she's like okay you know what i'm just going to i'm just going to find edward she walked through the house and made it to the front door and then she did take a step outside and she saw her friend edward was lying face down on the front lawn and it was immediately clear daikita was too late he was dead all right you guys if you've cmitmobile dot com now right away she begins screaming she's sobbing and luckily there were already police responding to the scene and they're able to immediately help her and comfort her see they had already figured out what was going on thanks to the other nine one one call the neighbor across the street had heard the same gunshots as daikita and when he looked out his front window he had seen an injured edward running out of his home he was bleeding because he had already been hit and he had been chased by joe so of course the other neighbor knows both of these people and while the neighbor watched edward fell down onto his knees he lifted his arms like being like don't hurt me and then he says quote what did i do joe and rather than answer according to the other neighborhood their other neighbor joe had shot edward in the back of his head execution style and then turned and walked away he seemed very calm and he disappeared before the first responders could even arrive this is what the neighbor is telling the operator okay but in the meantime another witness came forward the murder had happened while a mail carrier was actually making deliveries on edward and joe's street and that truck had a dash cam and actually had recorded the shooting on tape now once the police arrived they were able to watch the footage and confirm everything they'd already learned from the neighbor's nine one one call the neighbor was telling the truth so now the police knew edward was dead and they knew that the killer was joe the next door neighbor all they needed to do now was find him but they didn't need to look for long because a few minutes after police arrived to the shooting the joe just wanders out of his house and goes i'm the one who shot him so neighbor joe surrendered peacefully and let the police arrest him they took him to the station for an interrogation they know what happened but they want to know why they ask him what's going on here what's the story why would you do this to a neighbor except then joe told the story of his relationship with edward but from his perspective and from the way i've built this relationship from edward's perspective joe's is completely different so let me let me let me catch you up see according to joe edward and his roommate jen were huge bullies just like his last neighbor but even worse joe said that all four of the years they'd been living next to each other edward had tormented him he was always yelling at joe complaining he was too loud and noisy but joe was like i had never made a peep in fact edward was extremely roud and disruptive all the time joe says he was always blasting music watching movies having wild parties and joe said he had repeatedly gone to edward's house to ask him to be quieter but edward never listened in fact whenever joe complained edward would just get louder like he enjoyed knowing he was bothering his neighbor sometimes joe even claims edward would stand outside his window at night and mock him so if joe was listening to music edward would stand outside and sing along if joe swatted a fly edward would make buzzing noises and clap his hands outside of the window like a fly swatter if he dropped his toothpaste cap on the floor edward would pretend to do it as well and joe actually loved cats he was always putting out food for the strays and sometimes he would call them and say nice things to them except according to joe's statement to the police edward was basically just existing to bully him repeat every word and make of him now on top of that some nights edward would just pound on joe's walls and scream curse words at him for hours at a time and it all got so bad that joe actually built a blanket for around his bed he stacked up a bunch of pillows and quilts to muffle the sounds of his neighbor and he also installed a white noise machine which he ran twenty four seven but according to him none of it helped no matter what joe did he was constantly being tormented by edward and it made it impossible for him to sleep and his mental wellness took a turn for the worse and to make things more frustrating according to joe edward was escalating joe told the police that at one point edward actually bought a toy gun that fired plastic bullets and he would stand outside of joe's house and and shoot at it almost like he was trying to threaten him by shooting his house and if that wasn't bad enough edward was driving a wedge between joe and all the other neighbors on the street for example at first joe actually got along with edward's roommate jen but one day all of a sudden jen began acting very cold she withdrew from joe and all he could think was that edward had said something to her to make her turn on him because to all appearances edward hated joe for no reason and now he was convincing people to take his side against joe he was also spending all of his time and energy making joe miserable or as he put it later quote we were at war this is a neighborhood war so eventually joe claims he felt he didn't have any other choice it would have been difficult and expensive to move again and if he did sell his house that would mean letting edward win the war he had also been tormented by the thought of edward laughing at him as he gave up and left he imagined edward going around the neighborhood talking about how joe was a quitter and moved or a coward and that was unacceptable to joe he felt like he had been bullied long enough in two houses now and he wasn't going to take it anymore so instead the only option was to kill both edward and jen so joe's plan was to buy a gun shoot his neighbors and then kill himself he didn't want to go to prison and he didn't expect to get away with it so to him suicide seemed like the only option so in the days before the murder joe does buy a gun he also purchased some tools to take his own life and he bought a lot of cat food because according to him the joe wanted to make sure someone would take care of the strays after he was gone now in addition joe hired a good lawyer and made sure his will was up to date he knew he wasn't going to need much stuff after he edward and jen were all dead and since joe didn't have any family left he specified that all of his money and possessions were going to different charities including a local animal shelter in his journal he wrote about how excited he was to make this plan a reality in one entry he said quote i'm going to fight this to the end and give a lesson to all bullies people like edward disgust me and then as you know on january twenty third he loaded the gun he bought and walked to edward's house he knocked he actually didn't even wait for edward to answer the door was unlocked so joe just opened it and as soon as he made it into the hallway he saw edward heading toward him edward had his dog in his arms and it was obvious that he wasn't expecting anyone to be in his house joe didn't even explain what he was doing or give edward a chance to make things right according to him he just fired the bullet hit edward who immediately dropped the dog and then turned and ran out through the side door to try and get away from joe but joe chased him through the side yard out to the front and that's where he caught up with edward and this is where our other eyewitness also begins watching joe watched his neighbor fall to the grass edward then asked what he had done but joe didn't answer because he figured edward you already know the only problem was that now joe realized he couldn't bring himself to look edward in the eyes while he killed him so instead he walked around to stand behind edward and shot him in the back of the head all while edward was just on his knees begging him to explain what was going on and why he was so angry now once he knew for sure that edward was dead joe says he just walked back into his neighbor's house he said he wanted to find jen and kill her too but he couldn't find her because we know dikita was the only one inside and as it turned out her hiding place wasn't as good as she had hoped because joe claims he did see her but luckily he doesn't know who this girl is he has no reason to want her dead so he just left her alone he kept searching the house to find jen but then gives up as we know she'd moved out months before but joe didn't realize that at the time his main focus now was on going back to his home to finish his plan but as soon as he walked onto his own property he says he had second thoughts and joe realized he couldn't go through with it he couldn't kill himself so that's when he decided to walk back to the crime scene where police were already gathering and he turned himself in and right off the bat says he wanted to be convicted of edward's murder and sentenced to death joe figured an execution was the next best thing to suicide he'd still end up dead follow through with his plan but he wouldn't have to do it himself now when police hear all of this this is a pretty intense neighborhood dispute right but it's probably not the first neighborhood dispute to end in murder and when you hear this story things do seem odd first of all the things joe said about edward don't really match with his personality like i said edward was known for being generous and caring he had lived in this neighborhood a long time no other neighbors had a problem with him and on top of that it's kind of unclear to police how edward would even have like made some of the things in joe's version of events happen like what do you mean he's just standing outside your window mimicking everything like swatting flies or dropping toothpaste caps those aren't loud sounds they're not usually something you can pick up from outside of someone's house i mean joe says sometimes he couldn't even see him he was just listening and then copying these noises and so the police are like also he's just doing this all day and night especially when we know that he's been renovating his home caring for his sick mother and going to nursing school plus all of edward's neighbors said we never noticed any of this we didn't notice the tension between the two they're like whatever war joe is talking about none of us knew about it and the neighbors didn't think edward was even aware that joe was at war with him after all joe had never even called police to file a noise complaint he had just gone straight to murder all right you guys i'm getting into an ad and if you take supplements at all you know the experience of having to didn't match anything that they had observed and it all just seemed a little bizarre and the officers also thought joe's story didn't really hold up but then they looked into his past and they saw that joe's family actually had a history of schizophrenia and his father had been diagnosed with it before his death so this is when this case kind of goes this way this made the prosecutors wonder if perhaps joe was suffering from schizophrenia too maybe he had been hallucinating these sounds or imagining this conflict between himself and edward seemed like edward had never actually bullied joe or made those noises but if joe was hearing things and blaming edward for his own hallucinations maybe he did feel driven to murder during joe's interrogation they asked him very basic questions to see how much he understood about reality like do you know what month it is who is the president and joe was able to answer those questions without any issues so next state officials actually decide to set up appointments with mental health professionals because they really need to they need to look into this they examined him and they all agreed joe understood what he had done he did know it was wrong and in the eyes of the law joe was completely sane and culpable in fact some legal experts suggested he hadn't been entirely honest with the police he had been lying on purpose specifically they thought the suicide part was not ever part of the plan instead maybe he just wanted to be famous or he wanted people to pay attention to him or he wanted to seem like a good guy so maybe he was even playing up these mental health systems because that made reporters want to talk to him publish interviews with him and keep the spotlight on him now i want to acknowledge you can be legally responsible for your actions and you can be manipulative and intention seeking and still have mental health conditions joe may have had severe issues that needed to be treated but he was still sane enough to be charged with edward's murder his behavior before the trial continued to be very unpredictable when it was time for him to offer a plea he told the judge he'd be willing to plead guilty under one condition he wanted to be sentenced to death and executed immediately except that's not how the law works in florida legally joe couldn't get the death penalty unless he pleaded not guilty went to trial and was convicted and then the jury would have to recommend an execution there was no way for joe or the judge to just skip all of those steps so then joe's like hey i'll i'll change my plea to not guilty but then he's like actually i don't want to be executed anymore the legal process was taking too long and he decided he wanted to live now so his new argument was that anyone in his position would have handled the situation with edward the same way he had he basically says edward had been such a mean cruel bully that he deserved to die and if anyone had been neighbors with him they would have felt the same way and that's why he should be found not guilty now during his trial he took the stand to tell his side of the story and in his testimony joe completely acknowledged that he had killed edward unprovoked that it was premeditated that he had shown up and done it he argued though that he had no choice joe actually described himself as nice as being a good neighbor and he believed he was the real victim in this murder it was like he still didn't understand that this conflict with edward hadn't been as bad as whatever he was imagining that it only existed in his world or that there are other ways to deal with bad neighbors that don't involve murdering them i mean just film them and put them on tiktok i watch those all the time needless to say his defense isn't very strong the jury only deliberated for fifty minutes before finding him guilty they sentenced him to life in prison so he still didn't even get the death penalty he'd originally been asking for but after the ruling came down joe continued giving statements to the press and this is kind of where the theory of maybe he was just wanting fame comes in in these statements he tells the press he's having a tough time in prison that he wasn't getting along with other inmates including the men who shared his cell and joe admitted now that he knew what real bad neighbors were like edward didn't actually seem like that bad of a neighbor in retrospect which again this is just so weird to say because are you just a like perpetual victim it's impossible to say if anyone understands what joe is thinking or feeling maybe not even joe himself no one but him can say why he did it or how he expected things to play out afterward i don't know if he thought jail was going to be a better experience than having a random neighbor he was the only one who could have anticipated that he would kill edward because edward certainly never realized his neighbor was mad enough to murder him or never disclose that to anyone he never suspected he would die so suddenly or violently and he never got to achieve his hopes and dreams like caring for his mother at the end of her life or finishing nursing school although his college did give him a degree after his death edward's life was cut tragically short all because someone didn't like him and basically nursed a grudge until it exploded into murder and the reason i wanted to cover this case on today's episode is because i i just i just said this earlier but there's a lot of tick tock videos about neighbor drama it's a whole subsection of tick tock you can get on and just watch these series videos of people who fight with their neighbors and most of it is like recorded through doorbell footage and a lot of it's super petty like i have a nightmare neighbor and they don't like where i put my trash can or they don't like my fence so they tore it down without asking so then i had to call the cops or and most of the time it's like these petty things and honestly it would be a nightmare and completely aggravating like i put myself in this situation where you've bought a house that's not easy for people to do this is supposed to be your safe place and then the person who lives next door is making it absolutely miserable and so aggravating because although the fact that they're not like physically hurting people a nightmare neighbor would really just irk on that human side of you you know like you would just oh it would be hard and this is why i'm saying this is not the first case of a neighbor who murdered another neighbor for being a bad neighbor but in this specific case it is weird because according to all sources according to everyone who knew edward this was a one sided beef edward never hinted to anyone that he was at war with his neighbor he never hinted to anyone that he was behaving in the way joe was claiming he behaved jen never witnessed edward going outside in the middle of the night for hours on end to mock the neighbor never never witnessed an encounter where joe came over to ask edward to be quiet and edward yelled at him literally all of the things i mentioned to you were the entire gist of the interactions between these two him coming over to say sorry and edward being like no no no i wasn't yelling at you and then joe acting a little weird anytime edward would have you know would have raised his voice loud enough for neighbors to hear and then they like kind of put two and two together being like oh he acts weird every time he possibly hears me yelling at the dogs or just anything in general and so this has to make you wonder is this a serious mental health problem or is this a perpetual victim problem because as we know there are people who exist who no matter where they live no matter where they go no matter what situation or experience they are in they are being picked on that people like that exist it is a real mental thing where they are constantly picked on they are constantly being attacked and it almost seems like this is the pattern in joe's life because the neighbor before was apparently a bully edward was apparently a bully although there's you know no evidence of that and now his prison inmates are apparently bullies now that one i i could believe a little bit more but again it just seems like he's unhappy and picked on no matter what now is that does this just happen to be that and the other thing is is you know people with this specific problem i'm talking about where they're constantly picked on they do make up things in their head and whether they believe them or not i don't know but it's you you see this happen all the time where people you know will call the cops on someone and the cops get there and they'll tell a whole story and then when the cops see the footage the narrative that they painted was completely wrong and when the cops confront them like hey we watched the footage and that's not what happened they're like what well no no they they did this to me they were aggravating me they were and it's like they live in an almost different reality so is this as much as a serious serious mental health problem as serious as possible schizophrenia is this a epidemic that we've seen with other people where they're just constantly picked on and they make things up to try to fit their narrative or is there something else going on here i don't know but all i do know is that nightmare neighbors would not be fun and in edward's case his nightmare neighbor killed him thank you so much Host: Payton Moreland
Date: July 8, 2026
In this episode, Payton Moreland explores the tragic and unsettling case of Edward Tudor, an optimistic, kind-hearted man whose life was cut short by his next-door neighbor, Joe (Q Key), in Holiday, Florida. The episode delves into themes of perception versus reality, the dangers of unchecked grievances, and the psychological complexities underpinning violent neighbor disputes. Payton examines the contrasting narratives of victimhood and aggression, and asks: Was this the result of a true mental health crisis, or the manifestation of a perpetual victim complex?
Joe (Q Key): 56, recently retired IT expert, originally from China, and previously driven out of his last US home due to neighborly conflict.
Almost immediately, relations between Joe and Edward became strained:
Memorable moment/Quote:
“This is weird behavior as a neighbor…it feels to them like Joe wants to track them.” – Payton (16:25)
On the day of the crime, Edward studied with a friend, Daikita Cox. Door left unlocked (normal for the area).
Without warning, gunshots rang out. Daikita called 911:
Notable quote:
“Daikita was too late…he was dead.” – Payton (28:35)
Joe demanded the death penalty in exchange for a guilty plea, then changed his mind, arguing he was the true victim.
At trial, he continued to believe he was justified and misunderstood:
“Anyone in my position would have handled the situation with Edward the same way I had.” – Joe, in court (01:10:15)
Jury deliberated for just 50 minutes. Joe was sentenced to life in prison.
Perception vs. Reality: Joe’s narrative of persecution was never observed by others.
Mental Health: The case highlighted distinctions between legal sanity and possible psychological delusion.
Nightmare Neighbors: Payton contextualizes the story within the broader culture of viral “neighbor drama,” noting most conflicts remain petty—but some, terrifyingly, do not.
Memorable quote:
“All because someone didn’t like him and basically nursed a grudge until it exploded into murder.” – Payton (01:18:20)
This haunting case is a stark reminder that neighbor disputes can spiral into unimaginable violence, particularly when unchecked perceptions of persecution fester. It also poses real questions about mental health, social isolation, and our responsibility to notice when “odd” behavior might be a warning sign.

Payton closes by reflecting on the petty but persistent irritations neighbors can inflict, urging listeners to see how easily perceptions can diverge from reality—with tragic consequences. She leaves us with a caution: while most gripes never rise above petty TikTok content, for some, the war is all too real and all too personal.
