Brian Buffini
Welcome to It's a Good Life with Brian Buffini, founder of America's largest business coaching company. Here's a short classic cut from one of our all time favorite episodes.
Let's talk about the word potential. A latent or underdeveloped power that has not yet come to pass. How many of you kind of feel that way about yourself? Here's the good news. Here's why I can stand before you
Co-host or Guest Speaker
and my God and look you in the eye and say you have potential. Here's why I can say it. Here's why I know it to be true. It is a built in design function. So what's a definition of potential? Here it is. Okay, the acorn. What's inside the acorn?
Brian Buffini
The potential to turn into that.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
Now watch.
Brian Buffini
Do all acorns turn into oak trees? Do all acorns turn into fully developed oak trees?
Co-host or Guest Speaker
Do you know where I'm going with this? Okay. The same people that will criticize you,
Brian Buffini
the same people that aren't quite sure
Co-host or Guest Speaker
where you're coming from, the same people don't understand why you're going to events and do coaching and would be willing to share in a synergy group with people you've met a day ago would also be some of the people perhaps will not get on that journey of fully connecting to being who they were designed to be. Are you guys with me?
Brian Buffini
It's a natural order of things.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
For many years I've used the transformation image from nature of the caterpillar to the butterfly and the stages of development. And this is always a crucial thing
Brian Buffini
because in the world we live in today is I'm a caterpillar, but I want to be a butterfly. And America is the leading sales culture in the world. And all you have to do is you can do these three easy steps, three simple payments and you go from caterpillar to butterfly.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
That's where it is.
Brian Buffini
Or we're in a hurry, so we take a razor blade and cut that caterpillar open. Because I want it.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
When do I want it?
Brian Buffini
And let me tell you this. The power of delayed gratification, the power of perseverance is what ultimately develops it. Here's the key. This is the way it's designed. It is a life and death struggle to get from a caterpillar not to a butterfly, from a caterpillar to a pupae. It's a life and death struggle. And what develops is the internal organs in the caterpillar that would allow it to fly. Later on, if it becomes a butterfly, it's not sure. Not all pupaes turn into chrysalis.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
They don't all make it.
Brian Buffini
And then what happens is inside the chrysalis, what once was the caterpillar now is being transformed. And in the chrysalis, it has to learn as it's developing its wings, it pushes against what we would call a cocoon for a moth and push us against that material which actually develops the ability, when it gets outside the chrysalis, to do what the struggle is, what develops the opportunity to fulfill the potential. It's interesting to me is that people think folks who are committed to personal growth are flaky.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
And the truth of the matter is, it is the deepest form of courage you can have to be able to
Brian Buffini
look at yourself in the mirror, learn about who you're looking back at, and
Co-host or Guest Speaker
be willing to go and pursue who you were designed to be. That is the most courageous thing you can do.
Brian Buffini
And then to do it in such a way so it's not just insular, you know? The thing about it is everybody's blessed.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
When a butterfly flies, anybody who comes
Brian Buffini
in its path, would you guys agree?
Co-host or Guest Speaker
Like, have you ever gone, freaking butterflies are pissing me off.
Brian Buffini
Everywhere it goes, people are blessed. Is that true? That's who we're designed to be. That's the purpose of this. It says, oh, self actualization for self actualization. Self. Forget that noise. It is about fulfill your human potential so that you become who you're supposed to be, live the life you're supposed to live, and be a butterfly everywhere you go, and everyone who's able to receive it, go, man, that was a blessing. Are you guys with me? There are symptoms of unfulfilled potential.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
Knowing you're capable of more.
Brian Buffini
If you know you're capable of more, say aye. Okay? Constantly justifying our situation.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
Mr. Jim Rohn used to say it this way. If you really want to do something,
Brian Buffini
you'll find a way. Is that true?
Co-host or Guest Speaker
If you don't, you'll find an excuse.
Brian Buffini
Next, resentful of other success, you'll find yourself being a little snippy. And you might even do it in a very talented, gracious way. Number four. A gravitation towards criticism. Okay, speak. Experience. I'll go first, Mr. Motivator. When I find myself being critical, it
Co-host or Guest Speaker
is usually because I'm not settled in myself.
Brian Buffini
When I find myself being critical,
Co-host or Guest Speaker
it's
Brian Buffini
just because I'm not settling myself. Here's the thing. When you're on point, on purpose, you don't give a rats what anybody else is doing. You're on point. You're a man or a woman on a mission. This isn't new stuff. Principles aren't new. That's why they're called principles. Ben Franklin. Okay, Hashtag Ben. He said, any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain. And most fools do. Next. Minimizing your achievements. You can't find your identity in it. But remember, there's things to hold onto, okay? When we minimize what we've done, we minimize who we are and our own value.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
That's the big deal.
Brian Buffini
You know, I always have to remind the coaches, I know you're working on the cracks, but we gotta make sure we celebrate the Bell. Are you guys with me? The Liberty Bell. What gives people freedom? The crack in the Liberty Bell's a tiny fraction of the total circumference. We focus on the crack. It's important to remember. This has really helped me. It gives me focus points on what to work on.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
Okay?
Brian Buffini
So the three different elements. This is kind of the formula for achievement. If you want the good life package, if you want to be the both. And you got to have these three things working on. And here's the thing. You can work on them all together, or there's seasons where you have to
Co-host or Guest Speaker
emphasize one over the other.
Brian Buffini
Make sense?
Co-host or Guest Speaker
All right, here it is.
Brian Buffini
First one is mindset.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
The next is motivation. Got to have the juice. And then the last part is methodologies. This is the triangle of achievement right here. This good stuff.
Brian Buffini
Well, obviously, I'm a guy who's kind of been in the self development side of things for 30 years. I'm almost three times longer in Buffini
Co-host or Guest Speaker
and company than I was in my real estate career. Okay? I'm a long time doing this.
Brian Buffini
Buffini and Company has over a million
Co-host or Guest Speaker
hours of coaching people. This is what we found. Buffini and Company has a knowledge pool
Brian Buffini
because the information just doesn't go out to you. It comes back in through the coaches, and then it comes back in through the coaches through the synergy. Y' all think you got synergy?
Co-host or Guest Speaker
You want to see the coaches synergize, but they're going, hey, how do I get them through this? Have you ever had this before? What did they do? What did you do? How did you do it? It's been going on for 20 years. We're 20 years doing this thing, okay? Not yesterday. A million hours. Help and transform people's lives, okay? Those coaching staff and what they've done and who they are, they know more than anybody in the world on this subject. In the world. So here's where it comes from. Mindset.
Brian Buffini
So it's how you think and what
Co-host or Guest Speaker
you believe, two categories. Okay, how you think, what you believe.
Brian Buffini
This is not stuff you'll find published by Jim Rohn. These were backstage conversations over many years that helped me.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
And this was classic Jim Rohn. So he'd go, brian, here's the questions to ponder. First, why? Second, why not? Third, why not you?
Brian Buffini
Why not now changes how you think. Now, having the four answers, is that enough to get it done? No, it's one part of the formula.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
That's what you think.
Brian Buffini
Next, what you believe. What do you think about yourself? What do you believe about yourself? Okay, but wait. You gotta have the juice.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
You gotta have motivation.
Brian Buffini
Now, we also know there's people who say motivation's everything. Is that true? What did Jim Rohn used to say? He and the Zig debates. And Jim and Zig would go back and they'd have their little things, and Zig would talk about motivation only. And Jim would go, hey, what about thinking? He goes, you have an idiot and you motivate him. Now you have a motivated idiot. But what happens if you have someone who's really worked this and they get the juice? What have you got now? Okay, so again, the problem with motivation, here it is.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
It wears off.
Brian Buffini
One of my favorite quotes. People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing. That's why we recommend it. What's the word? Write that word down. Motivation is daily. So motivation is made up of three things. Something you're pretty good at. You're going to like this. Goals. How many of you are good at goals? I love the story. There was a motivational speaker in San Francisco about five years ago, and a whole bunch of coaching members went to this event together. And the guy sat on stage and he took out 100 bucks and he says, I'll give 100 bucks to anybody who in the room right now can bring up a set of written goals. And the man got rushed. Lost money on that gig, didn't he? Second element of motivation is ambition. Ambition's a good thing. It's a healthy ambition. Have you ever heard they got a healthy ambition? It's like a healthy appetite. Now, can you have an appetite that hurts you? Yes or no? Can you have an ambition that hurts you?
Co-host or Guest Speaker
And then attitude. Attitude.
Brian Buffini
The thing about it is, I've spent a lot of time on these topics
Co-host or Guest Speaker
with all of you.
Brian Buffini
Gratitude is becoming the cornerstone of my personal philosophy. Gratitude, great attitude. Gratitude is the game changer. Gratitude's the game Changer. And let me say this, this is gonna sound bizarre.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
I work hard at it. I work hard at it. And I will say this, I am
Brian Buffini
not a micromanager of my kids.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
But there is one thing they know I don't play with and I don't care. I'm telling you right now, you can be a 23 year old married man, this ain't negotiable. And you can be a 50 year old and make me a freaking grandpa. This ain't negotiable. Gratitude's non negotiable.
Brian Buffini
Embracing gratitude and expressing gratitude changes the heart.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
It changes the heart.
Brian Buffini
So now the last part is methodologies. Methodologies broken down into systems. Why do we need systems? Because inconsistent people need to be consistent. Consistency is the key to success. So the only way a person can be consistent is to have a system. Okay? And a routine. Routine is on the personal side. System's on the business side or production side. System stands for. This is the old Joe Nigo acrostic. Save yourself time, energy, money.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
Okay?
Brian Buffini
Save yourself, time, energy, money. Methodology of systems and routines. Routines are those habits that you internalize. And again, you don't have to become a slave to the habit, but the routine is one of the ways that it becomes autopilot. Okay, big deep breath.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
I want you to close your eyes. I'm going to ask you the following questions.
Brian Buffini
Big, deep breath again, close your eyes.
Co-host or Guest Speaker
I'm going to ask you a couple of questions. If you knew you couldn't fail, if you absolutely knew, like the sun is in the sky, the ground is beneath you. If you knew you couldn't fail, if
Brian Buffini
money and resources weren't an issue at
Co-host or Guest Speaker
all,
Brian Buffini
your current circumstances wouldn't affect you one bit. And your key relationships supported you. You knew you couldn't fail, money wasn't an issue. Your current circumstances wouldn't affect you and your key relationships were behind you,
Co-host or Guest Speaker
what would you do?
