Bound together by blood and a 7-minute journey, our boys find themselves on the run to Mexico, still finding time to send a note home to mom. Written summer 2016, the original inspiration for this song was simply wanting to write a “hey ma” lyric. From there I found myself in a shoot-out at 5:25. Anymore I sketch my songs by recording them as a live track where I’m standing in the middle of a room strumming my guit and singing into a single mic. I’ll choose from 2 or 3 live takes, then overdub electric guitar, a keyboard part, stumble through some sort of snare part, and you end up here: on the internets, playing out of computer speakers. This is a new song, written in winter 2013, and recorded as this sonic sketch in late spring 2014. I hope you enjoy its imperfect, a bit sloppy and rough at the edges feel … ’cause that’s the ways these babies are coming into the world. As I go along, I am less concerned with making these songs perfect, and more thankful for my continuing songwriting process, and this crazy life—both still gifting me. Inspired by Marc Chagall’s “The Birthday”, I wrote this love song back in the late-90′s sometime, and recorded it in 2013. As with all of the recordings here, it’s demo-quality, but sonically I am trying to find that place between sleep and awake, where everything is soft and falls away as you drift between two worlds. To that end the lyric is very simple and unworked — without a bridge and whispered more than sung. Feel free to download any of these mp3s by right-clicking the non-flash bit.ly links below. I’d Like To Fall non-flash play link: http://bit.ly/JRSxi2 my feet up off the ground, Chagall's "Birthday" everyday, I’d like to fall but I won’t do any harm flying with my feet up off the ground I’d like to fall I’d like to fall ’cause I’m the clumsy kind I’d like to fall into her arms and I’d like to see her she’s so fine I’d like to fall I’d like to fall everyday, I’d like to fall softly fall into her arms flying with my feet up off the ground I’d like to fall I’d like to fall I get this crazy feeling when I’m alone and she’s not here it’s like this sound I’m almost hearing like half of me has disappeared everyday, I’d like to fall softly fall into her arms flying with my feet up off the ground I’d like to fall I’d like to fall ©Jerry Buckley – words and music by Jerry Buckley

I’ve been playing with the idea of writing songs either directly to, or as extensions of existing well-known songs. This is my first attempt at that idea. Paul McCartney’s “Blackbird” was my jumping off point for this one. The song is written to his song imagined as an elusive, untethered muse … ’cause who hasn’t loved “Blackbird”, right? The acoustic guitar fingerings are on the low E, A and B strings with the open drones in G like “Blackbird”. Although that’s really where the acoustic guitar and song similarities end. The vocal and acoustic guitar are just a single live take in front of a mic as I was sketching the structure and finishing the lyric … then a quick piano and electric guitar part were recorded. Written and recorded in March/April 2013. Thanks for listening! Little Blackbird non-flash play link: http://bit.ly/16HRomq sweetest sound I ever heard Don’t know why I love you like I do, sweet little thing you wear no ring no one is caging you You step right up and sing just like a bird, my sweet little Blackbird So fly on, fly on little bird The trees they hold you and don’t want to let you go, a home in the Spring just to hear you sing when blooms begin to grow ’til you fly away and find another one, somehow they all forgive once your song is sung So fly on, fly on little bird, why must you be the sweetest sound I’ve ever heard? I know, what you don’t I will, what you won’t I’ll stay, what you fly what I know, I’ll never know why ©Jerry Buckley – words and music by Jerry Buckley

A thank you to my Mom, “Sparky” — for the ultimate gift. So glad she put me here. Thanks Mom. What Can I Give? (Sparky) non-flash play link: http://bit.ly/JtaC1J Thanks Sparky! what can I say, what can I do? what can I give back to you? the things you gave, I can never match but you want nothing in return that’s your loving catch so I’ll say it, can you hear? I’m so glad you put me here where everyday is an unknown show I can’t say which way it will go and neither can you but you know that’s there’s little I can do to guess it any better than you did the day I walked out your door and we both wondered what it’s all for but there’s no guessing why I’m singing this one — hear: I’m so glad that you put me here words and music by ©Jerry T Buckley

Written in May 2011, a love song wrapped in the blues — or maybe it’s a blues wrapped in a love song. For me, this one’s about resilience, reaffirmation, putting your feelings out there, and making bonds stronger through open eyes. My obsession with major to minor chord drops continues here. On this side of mellow, but best played loud … so crank it up. Just for fun I attempt to write the worst song ever. Results? An ode to the end of summer 2011, while I reluctantly take off my flip-flops. Had a nice moment in the kitchen last week when I strummed and sang this one for Sue and Jules — resulting in the longest hug ever from Julia. Payment received. Written in May 2011, it’s a simple love song built on 3 chords: D, G and A — of course. Kinda old school, I’ve really been appreciating very straightforward 60′s / 70′s songwriting lately — especially John Fogerty and Van Morrison. So I didn’t want to fuss too much and complicate the lyric or chord structure. I am particularly fond of the line “time goes by at the speed of a sweet baby girl”. That’s my life right now. This recording is a quick sketch with piano, voice and guitar. It’s the type of demo I record when a song is close to complete, listen to over a bit of time on the iPod, and then re-record with a modified verse, different arrangement, harmonies etc that I work out. Click the little grey triangle to play, and please let me know what you think! I Wrote Her a Song-sketch non-flash play link: http://bit.ly/tfNbya I wrote her a song because I just couldn’t say what I felt in my heart and couldn’t hide it away, she sat right next to me as my fingers did play, I wrote her a song that day I played it again before she knew it too well and if she didn’t like it you know I just couldn’t tell, she sang with me, a harmony as high as the trees where we lay laughing, singing in the shade that day We played it around our own little world from right in the backyard to a sweet baby girl, and every year I sang it it made her golden hair curl, time goes by at the speed of a sweet baby girl I have this one dream where she plays me my song and as she’s singing we all sing along, have you heard her singing just like a bird? be sure to hear the sweetest sound you’ve ever heard I wrote her a song even though I can say what I feel in my heart without my D, G and A, she sits right next to me as my fingers do play, I wrote her a song today I wrote her a song today ©Jerry Buckley – words and music by Jerry Buckley

Ah, 17: so much melancholy, so many D chords, so many bluesy guitar solos — and the time to play them! Deeper in Love was written in 1979 / 80. But this is the first time I’ve recorded the song — roughly 30 years later. Lots of lyrical clichés in here, but it’s been fun to remain true to the words of the teenage me, while making a recording reflecting my emotional and musical state of mind back then: blue. Main musical influences on this song: the darker songs from the classic CSN and Déjà Vu albums, Traffic and Cat Stevens spinning on my turntable over, and over, and over again. I finally recorded a vocal and harmony to Now’s When this month. I’ve never been a strong singer and will often hear a different voice than my own on a song … that’s the case here, where I really hear a female voice on the lead. Even though I mangle the vocal, it brings me a lot of joy to play and sing — especially when the JBJBs sing it together at the piano. Written in the Spring of 2009 after watching 3 consecutive Disney movies with my 8-year old daughter, it’s about the beauty all around us — if we just take the time to look. This song is supposed to be very simple, and strictly commercial. So for any brand managers and mad men reading: the little blue triangle below will lead you to pure gold.
