jeff versus taco truck salsa Whether it's verde roja or the orange one, for Jeff, trying any salsa is like playing Russian roulette with a flamethrower. Luckily, Jeff saved with Amazon and stocked up on antacids, ginger tea and milk.

That's why I'm so like proud of Like Ryan and Issa and, you know, Antwan. Because I feel like the more we can succeed and do it on a level that is unquestionably excellent, the more that it makes room for other people to come up behind us.
Fat Joe
Yeah, yeah. What up, y'? All? It's Coker, The Dawn Coker.
Joe Budden
You know who it is. Your boy.
Fat Joe
Perhaps a little something for the nose
Joe Budden
show. Man, every show legendary. Every show iconic. This one is so iconic, she calls for the Tom Ford. You know what I mean?
Fat Joe
Oh, he's talking about the Thomases.
Joe Budden
We talking about eyes and sight and losing sight and things of that nature. But on a real serious tip, when you think of today's guest, you think about somebody who really changed the game, not just in Hollywood, but in the culture. This is a man who looked at television and said, I don't see us. And then built the empire, making sure we were seen. From blackish to girl strips. The black ass fizzing. Everything he touches turns into gold. I say platinum, you ask me. And now he's stepping behind the lens as a director to tell the story of one of basketball's greatest icons. On top of all of that, he's working with my brother on something very special. I mean. Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise for the one and only Kenya Bacharan.
Kenya Barris
Thank you,
Fat Joe
young Kenya Barris. You got that shit on as usual. That little changer. Pull over.
Joe Budden
He got one of the only closets that I'm jealous of. And it probably was just not even his real closet. His Hollywood closet was. It was the rock of his real closet, but it was incorrect.
Fat Joe
Let me explain something to you.
Joe Budden
I still feel a little bit something.
Fat Joe
This the guy who beat me to it.
Kenya Barris
Never.
Fat Joe
I'm telling you, when I saw Black as Fuck and it just felt like you was just. They gave you an excuse to throw that shit on him. It was a fashion show. And I said, if I'm on TV or something, I'm doing that same. We've been coming up on this show. We've been throwing that on these is Dizzy. You know, before we came, they be wearing the Adidas suit, just black teeth. We up on here Bottega. All type of Hermes, Louis. Anything you could every day would never run out. And never run out.
Kenya Barris
You wear them. It's a throwaway.
Fat Joe
Not for me. You. You double up, man. We never wore nothing twice on this show.
Kenya Barris
When you wear it on the show, will you wear it out?
Fat Joe
Fuck, yeah.
Kenya Barris
Really?
Fat Joe
Well, you know, now I don't go to the clubs no more. I'm old So I use the Nick game as the club.
Kenya Barris
Okay.
Fat Joe
If you ever wanted to know. That's hard. I'm telling you.
Joe Budden
That's why you go to the grown man club.
Fat Joe
Let me tell you, that's how you step up. I used to sell drugs to impress the neighbor. So I'm sitting on the couch with the ice on the disc. The new. You know, you get the wit to just drive around Harlem, and now we nationally syndicated. I go to the Nick game like I'm at the vop. I'm so fresh. Let me tell you something. You know, it's some shit when you see the leather and it just can't crumble like that shit just too neat. I don't know what he got on, but he got some shit on. I go to the game like it's a fucking club. I go in there, I. It just ain't no girls there.
Kenya Barris
Madison is great. Diamond Lights, too. It makes them dance.
Fat Joe
Last night they said some shit. They said that Joe got that bling bling on. He got them diamonds on and shit. I said, yeah, you know, it's what we do. You know what I'm saying? That's how we paralyze the situ. But my point is black as fuck.
Kenya Barris
Thank you.
Fat Joe
I'm watching every episode. I swear to God. My stylist, Terrell, I called them every episode. I said, yo, this n got that shit on, nigga. Like, he is not fucking playing with him. That was conscious, huh? Yeah, man. No.
Kenya Barris
Yeah. I got one chance. I'm a fat writer. I get a chance to be on TV, I'm gonna least put some shit on him. Not gonna just come on.
Fat Joe
And then you was telling us off air that that was your actual crib that they turned into the set.
Kenya Barris
Yeah, that's it. That's crazy. And then we had to go from the set to my crib in the morning, sleep, get in the car, then get out the car and walk back on my. I'd be like, this is crazy. This is blowing my mind. I forget sometimes we would do that. I'm tired.
Fat Joe
You know, I did night school, the movie, and Kevin Hart kept fucking with me because is this heavy actor or. Like, my scene would be at 10 at night, but they come get me at 6 in the morning.
Joe Budden
The prep for TV is much different.
Fat Joe
I'm waiting all fucking day.
Joe Budden
Then they tap me in the trailer for 30 minutes.
Fat Joe
I get home one in the morning. I'm up at six in the morning, and I'm just sitting there till like nine at night. And then like, all right, Joe, you're seen. And Kevin Hart used to catch me sleeping all day and be like, yo, this ain't the fucking studio. You can't sleep. This is what. And I'm like, damn. I felt like, you know, like, is it like that for everybody or. No, look at that. So if you will Smith, you coming up in there, 9:00am Samuel Jackson.
Kenya Barris
Hell, I mean, even you shouldn't. The real Kev will tell you, like, you should be scheduled. You should know where your. Your day falls.
Fat Joe
I never did it again.
Kenya Barris
Even if it's five hours off.
Fat Joe
Never did it again.
Kenya Barris
9:00am to 1:00am like, that's. Unless you're working all day. That's different. But you shouldn't have to sit around. Kev wouldn't let that. He doesn't do that now. That was a while ago.
Fat Joe
Shout out to them. That was $100 million opportunity.
Kenya Barris
That was a huge.
Fat Joe
Showing me love and giving me that opportunity. But never again. Pimping. Pimp my ride the biggest. Like, Joe, 10 at night. Come on. I'm like, yo, these niggas. I'm eating a beef jerky. Like, yo, this crazy.
Kenya Barris
We're gonna bring you out of retirement. We're gonna bring you out of retirement.
Fat Joe
Oh, but you.
Kenya Barris
We don't bring you.
Fat Joe
You know what else for what we working with, we got a show called the Book of Jose with the Torero Brothers. And that's gonna just bring that whole 80s 90s New York. That shit gonna be crazy. Like, it's gonna be nuts.
Kenya Barris
It is. It's not just your story. It's. You're the Forrest Gump of hip hop. Like, the idea of, like, all the moments that you've been there. You know what I'm saying? My favorite part is the moment that you saw Pun in the crowd. That's when the books are, like, in that crowded apartment, you know what I'm saying? And you see something that nobody else and you like, this is gonna. And I like that. I was like, I get nyd. Get a chance to do that, have that moment. You know what I'm saying?
Fat Joe
But you do that with all your movies or, you know, when you take a chance with somebody or you see a guy that writes and you like, all right, I think he could be. You know. Cause you're putting your career, your word, your everything on the line on the others.
Kenya Barris
You know, when you see something and if you're smart, you get stingy with it. You know what I'm saying? Cause you're like, if you see something, you're like, yo, we can help each other, but I know, you know what I'm saying? Like, this is something special. Try to bring it out, but like, make sure that you keep that, you know, keep those people close to you. I think people. And now, you know, and make sure that they get taken care of too. I think that's important if you can.
Fat Joe
Yeah, everybody gotta eat. That's what, that's. That's the whole. You know my mentor, JR Reitinger, billionaire, out of nothing. He taught me everything about business. And his philosophy or ideology was everybody gotta eat. He did not feel good if everybody in the team wasn't eating. And he taught me different. Cause I come from a crabs in the barrel mentality out the Bronx. I come in the. I'm the kid, I'm the leader. He's come through me. Then it trickled down, you know what I mean? But after I fucked with him, I realized, everybody gotta eat. So now you come to my sneaker store, they look like they selling dope. They got fucking Benz trucks out there, Rolexes, Range Rovers. State of the art. Like, everybody gotta eat. State of the art. No, everybody gotta eat. But it reflects on you when your team is living good and they doing great. You know, some guys, you know what fucks me up is when people don't see the blessings of being down and they get that entitlement and they think, you know, the lights can't be turned off, right?
Kenya Barris
But everybody gotta cook, though. If everybody's gotta eat, everybody gotta cook too. And I think that's the problem. Sometimes everybody, you sometimes feel like Joe
Joe Budden
of the day, right?
Kenya Barris
You get around people and they feel like, you know, you want everybody, but everybody gotta be a part of it. And everybody, you can't just, you know, expect it to just fall off people's your plate onto theirs, you know what I'm saying? I think everybody, that's why the crews that I really respect and I see them come up, everybody has a lane, you know what I'm saying? And when you start figuring out what everybody's lane is, everybody is not gonna fit on the freeway. Seriously. And sometimes you gotta. I've gotten older and I've realized sometime now that you gotta, you know, be like your crew only can have a certain amount of lanes in it of your people. You really can be like, I can, I can take care of you. You know what I'm saying? We can take care of each other. And then those people gotta have their people. But I feel like, I think that's a problem with Us a little bit sometimes is that we and people around us sometimes just feel entitled. Cause we all came up together. But, like, you want everybody to win, but the whole thing is the proximity of being around you, being around Jada, like, that's a win in itself.
Fat Joe
They don't understand that.
Kenya Barris
And I think the people talk slow
Fat Joe
for the people in the back.
Kenya Barris
When I look, when I look and I look and I look at the crews that I love, and I look and I see LeBron and his crew, Jane and his crew. Like, people have jobs. You know what I'm saying? You and your crew, people have jobs. People have things that they do. And there's not that whole era of people just be around to be around. I'm old for that. I'm too old for that.
Joe Budden
You always talk about that on this show. Coming in the game early, you tend to. You think it's cool to want to bring everybody. Till you learn financially, mentally, spiritually, judicially. You had it up the head with bills and lawyers, and just taking in a big entourage turns into three, maybe three or four.
Kenya Barris
That's enough. And that's.
Fat Joe
My circle's so small, it's like a fucking period. I can't even fit no more.
Kenya Barris
That's how it's supposed to be. And you got. Still got your crew, your seat. But I feel like the problem is that people feel like that they just should have. You know what I'm saying? And I feel like that causes resentment, it causes contempt. And that energy is toxic.
Fat Joe
You already know when it's a real moment, you need a real bottle. That's why we rock with 1800 tequila. These people been making tequila for 11, seven generations. That's a legacy. That's the OG status. They were the first to introduce Anejo. Set the standard before most of these brands even existed.
Joe Budden
And you could taste the difference. For real. The 1800 Cristilino and Resposado is what we've been on lately. Smooth, clean, elevated, no rough edges. Just a premium pour that speaks for itself. You know, when something is just built right? That's what this is.
Fat Joe
Real talk. That's just what it is. It's always around for the best nights, the wins, the celebrations. Then remember that night's stories.
Joe Budden
Whether you're keeping it low key with the crew or you pull up to something big. 1800 fits every segment. It ain't trying too hard. It's just as death. 1800 tequila, real legacy, real smooth. That's the move.
Fat Joe
One of the main things I've seen on Social media, which is true in every which way, is I don't care if it's a family member.
Joe Budden
Hold on. I got a Crazy Joe moment before you, okay? Because I seen you back me up. This guy over here talking about we baited CEO Smooth. I don't like I almost turned into you.
Fat Joe
We got the big dog here.
Joe Budden
We don't bring people here to bait. You see what kind of quality do. You see what kind of guests we have here? People you could never get what I said, no, no.
Fat Joe
You catching the straight for no reason.
Joe Budden
No, he's not catching. No, no, no, he's not catching it. He's catching the red carpet of these other people that saying this bad stuff about us.
Fat Joe
We have Pete Rock here. Pete Rock, everybody.
Joe Budden
Do any.
Kenya Barris
Yeah.
Fat Joe
So I asked.
Joe Budden
You don't have set up questions. We have a genuine conversation on the couch. Nobody over there telling us not to ask. We don't disrespect. We got guests that you could never get. Now go back.
Fat Joe
My 20th anniversary of Lean Back, we did the Apollo. We brought everybody. I begged CO Smooth and Pete Rock to get back together. They couldn't see our eyes. So P. Rock comes up here, and I asked him, what was the fallout. So there's some guy in a podcast, God bless him, he's interviewing C.L.
Kenya Barris
smooth.
Fat Joe
So P. Rock said he was jealous of him or some shit. I didn't tell P. Rock to say nobody did.
Joe Budden
It wasn't no cue cards. The man said was out of his, came out of his.
Fat Joe
I'm gonna tell you something to your opinion, right? To double down on what you said. The same guy, he tells CL Smooth, y' all feel like Fat Joe baited Pete Rockin? Not true. I didn't know what he was gonna say. That same guy, after he said that, his next question was like, so did Pete Rock your girl? Did he smash your sister? Did he what? Ha. I'm like, yo, you baiting the man.
Joe Budden
Talk about bait. And he doing the bait.
Kenya Barris
That's the world that we live in right now. I just was having this conversation, and it's crazy. And I remember when Jay dropped the lyric, my dad had said it to me when I was a kid. This kid on the block had Dartnell, had a mongoose, and I had a huffy.
Joe Budden
No.
Fat Joe
You know, I had a huffy.
Kenya Barris
And I wanted. I was, like, saying something. I was like, I hate Darnell. My dad was like, come here. He was like, where, Darnell? Eat don't make you shit. And I was like, okay. Then when Jay said, Look, I remember it popped back up. Anyway, I went back in the house, I was talking to my great grandma, and she's like, what's wrong? I was like, daddy cussed at me. And she's like, what's wrong? And I was like. I told her what he said. She was like, you know what he meant by that? And she was like, if Darnell's hungry and he eats, are you gonna have to use the bathroom later? And so I was like, no. She's like, so then why do you care about what Darnell eats? And I was like, and I'm telling you. And I put this on my children. I put this on my life. I'm not trying to. I have a lot of flaws. I have never been jealous of a person in my entire. I've been envious.
Fat Joe
I'd be saying that.
Kenya Barris
I've been envious. I've looked at love, Ryan Coogler. I've looked at Ryan Coogler's career and be like, oh, man, I wish I had. Like, I love, but I celebrate him. Jealousy is when you see somebody who you would love passing them and be like, but you let it take away from that person.
Joe Budden
I wish they did that.
Kenya Barris
Yes. I've never been jealous of a person in my entire life. And when I used to hear people in high school, girls would be like, she's too tall.
Fat Joe
She's jealous of me.
Kenya Barris
I was like, man, shut up. I'm jealous of you. Just sounds stupid. Like, you know what I'm saying? I didn't understand it when people would say, and now as I got older, I started for the first time realizing that jealousy was a real, real, real emotion.
Fat Joe
Back to what I was gonna say before. Yeah, I had two albums. One's called Jealous One's Envy Joe and Jealous One's Still Envy. And one of the most dangerous things you could have in your life is a family member or a so called friend or entourage that's actually jealous of you. If you believe that one of your friends or family members is 1% 1, I'm not saying 101% jealous of you. You gotta get rid of them because it's a disease. And they sitting there and they're like, and you trying to be nice, bringing them to places with you. I brought guys to Madison Square Garden. I'm performing, they the side looking at me, and I knew they was jealous.
Kenya Barris
It's the worst emotion.
Fat Joe
That's an old person move. It's an old person move. I don't have nobody around me that I feel is Jealous. If I feel you jealous, you gone. I don't care if you're a family member.
Kenya Barris
I don't fuck with you. You have to be. Because it's like somebody on dope, they can't get rid of.
Joe Budden
Stop. Once they get on that road. Never changed.
Fat Joe
I don't even know how it happens. And so with me, one of the biggest. Believe it or not, one of the biggest problems I ever had was getting down with Roc Nation, right? Because automatically they think I know Jay Z. When I tell you the dumbest dudes you ever seen in your life, the most illiterate, you know, friends that you, you know, you know, their IQ is like a peanut. Yo, when you gonna set up the meeting with me and Jay Z? And I'm looking at him like, yo, bro, what are you talking about? You ain't even sell an orange on the side. Meeting for what the fuck? You ain't never meeting Jay Z.
Public Investing Ad Voice
You.
Fat Joe
You think I'm a good. Let me tell you something. I'll tell you a story. I did it one time. I did it one time under what? No, no, but listen. Superstar rapper wants to meet the powers to be. It's the only person on the earth I introduced to the powers to be. They get him a situation, hook him up. The man don't want to pay. The mission. I was mind boggling. I was just. I never look at this guy the same no more. I see him and I just like. And I'm. I'm like. And when they say, yo, so can
Kenya Barris
I ask a couple questions?
Fat Joe
You know how Jay Z says it? He says, yo, what's up with your man? Yeah, that's my man now. No, it's Hip Hop's man, J. Kiss. Hip Hop Man. Method Man's Hip Hop man. Fat Joes.
Joe Budden
That's your man.
Fat Joe
I try to look up. No, it's my man who didn't pay.
Kenya Barris
So let me ask a question. Was it clearly expressed?
Fat Joe
Of course. Business is business. You trying to get something done you can't do on your own. They put you in the right place, you get it done, and then you don't want to pay. Like, come on, man. Like, now I can't even respect you as a man. Not only that, I have never brought a person into this building talking about, yo, great guy, this, that. I'm like, wow, I can't. He know. And that. Well, who. Perhaps something for the nose. Perhaps, you know. But Kenya, let me tell you something, man. So they make you to be like. Well, you are, but they make you to Be like, the voice of black people in America. Tyler Perry.
Joe Budden
It's a great position to be instead
Kenya Barris
of a voice, though not the part is the part that hurts. We need. I'm a voice, but I feel like the part is the part that causes
Fat Joe
problems because everybody's got your name in their mouth.
Kenya Barris
Pause right now.
Fat Joe
But everybody's like, yo, I know Kenya Barris. Kenya Barris is going to. I'm just like, word.
Kenya Barris
I just keep my head down now.
Fat Joe
Gangster dudes, all type of dudes. No, Kenya Parish, he's. I'm like. And they just expect so much from you. Yeah.
Joe Budden
Set a high standard.
Kenya Barris
I just keep my head down. I mean, I feel like I. I love being able to do what we do, you know I'm saying, like, it's a blessing. I know every day you wake up and you're like, oh, like, I never thought this was. You know what I'm saying? Like, some of the stuff we. You know, I still like saying. I still remember dreaming about the things I do today. You know what I'm saying? Like, never thought it was possible, but I think the blessing and the curse is that they need more of us. You know what I'm saying? And I feel like the idea that the few of us that there is makes it harder. 1. Anything you do gets blasted immediately. Anything anybody says is immediately true. You know what I'm saying? Anything that you do is put it under the microscope in a different kind of way. That's why I'm so proud of Ryan and Issa and Antwan, because I feel like the more we can succeed and do it on a level that is unquestionably excellent, the more that it makes room for other people to come up behind us, you know what I'm saying? The more you get to spread your wings because you're not under such a light microscope, you get to spread your wings. When everybody's watching everything you do, it makes it a lot harder. And there's just not a lot of, you know, writer, director, you know what I'm saying? But there's just not enough.
Fat Joe
I want to be an Illuminati tool. Me, too. Has anybody. Next time you have a meeting. Next time there's a meeting, don't they hold him in the building? No, no, no. Not true. Isn't. Are we 30 minutes away from. That's what. Looking at this. Come up here. You know when you see big money. Look at this guy. Look at this guy. This guy looking 22, he just go. There's something about that. That level of bag that they know how to.

Joe Budden
Your friend.
Fat Joe
All my friends. Breaking up with his wife. Joe, come over here. This, this, that. I go over there. Yo, you've been with your wife since high school. This, this, that. I said, yo. Are you sure? I'm sure, Joe. Well, if you walk in Club Live and Elijah on is cuffing your wife's ass on the couch. He said, what if I call her sucking your dick? I still wouldn't give a. I said, oh, no, he's divorced. Yeah.
Joe Budden
He was serious. He was serious. Yeah.
Fat Joe
Told me to start a walk. Cause my shit usually work. Cause I'm a storyteller, so I visual I put you in the place. Yo, listen, I know this is fun and games. You think this shit is cool. But when you see her, said, I don't give a fuck about.
Kenya Barris
Is he serious?
Fat Joe
Yeah. He left 18 years later. He got a bit.
Joe Budden
Something happened. Detrimental.
Fat Joe
She did something.
Joe Budden
Yeah.
Fat Joe
Because he just didn't clean the house.
Joe Budden
You try to hit him with the visualized. He double. He told it. That's nothing.
Fat Joe
What you told me detrimental.
Kenya Barris
Something detrimental happened.
Joe Budden
Whatever she did, it was way worse than.
Fat Joe
Yo, where's the envelope? Told him, you are not the father. Hit him with what happens.
Kenya Barris
That'll do it. That is.
Fat Joe
That will do it. Said, yo, Kenya, the man, Maury Povich. I asked him, right? Because we all know.
Kenya Barris
Yeah.
Fat Joe
What's a moment in our life that you know we know? Right. Like, so you asked me, joe, what's your favorite verse ever? I'd say, well, with big L, you know, we know. Yo, Maury, what's the biggest episode that changed your life? He said the woman had twins. That was telling the guy he's the father when they seen the result. He was the father of one twin. Is this Googleable? When I start talking really facts, huh?
Joe Budden
He was the father of one.
Fat Joe
What? They was bumping heads. Yo, this is crazy. He was the father one and somebody else was the father the other baby. It is possible to have twins with
Kenya Barris
two different fathers, yes.
Joe Budden
Yeah.
Fat Joe
No, no. Fraternal and identical. That's. No, that's the wrong term. Fraternal. Fraternal. Means they. They don't look the same. My brother is twins. It's called hetero pat. Hetero. Fraternal. She was everybody back to back. Back to back to back.
Joe Budden
Really?
Fat Joe
This was. Maybe that was her perfection.
Kenya Barris
Oh, my God.
Fat Joe
Two lovers is not the father. Okay, what's.
Joe Budden
How you doing? Out of battle.
Fat Joe
Slack off screen. Okay. Twins. One of them is the father. The other. Nah, that and that.
Joe Budden
You might as well just let the other have the other. Yeah, nobody beat that.
Fat Joe
18 years child support, huh?
Joe Budden
It's a winner take. Discharged the other one to him, too.
Fat Joe
What about the basketball player? He gave the girl a flat deal. She spent that million dollars?
Joe Budden
Yeah, it was paid for the whole way.
Fat Joe
He said 18 flat?
Joe Budden
Yeah.
Fat Joe
Yo, I found under the pillow, yo, this guy's making all type of money now. He. He did that. He had that one shot deal when to take off. Everything must go. She took the million dollars, ran out. That.
Kenya Barris
I was crazy. That was such a. Such a bad lawyer. I was like a weed of people fresh from a. Fresh out of law school, just taking. That's no money. I mean, good for him. Good for him.
Fat Joe
I tell you, sometimes I work against him. No, no. Sometimes work against him. I walk in the club one time, this girl who. I don't know her name, but she was around in Miami like, she was a beautiful girl, but she was out, let's say, seven days a week, forever. And she ran up to me and she was pregnant. She was like, look, I'm in the club. She said, your brother. And she told me, who? Who. No, no, I might get sued right now. We on a different level right now. But she told me who. And the went and sat by the ball over there and was looking at me the whole night like, got him. She ain't no one that went broke around that time. Bankruptcy, legend, the best. She's sitting over there. I said, damn, I just loaned that 20,000. I said, Geez, done. She don't even know. She thought she was in for the. She said, got him.
Joe Budden
She was in for section eight.
Fat Joe
Man, I've been around a long time. Kenya Burke, you called me the Forrest Gump. She told me, got him. Your friend, your brother is sat by the bar. And I was watching it the whole night. I was like. Cause she was like, why is she out a seductive? She was one of them. But listen, I'm looking at her the whole night, right? I'm like this. Because, you know, I don't. I don't get high or nothing. I'm just. I'm Looking at her. And I said, man, little does she know. I don't think she got paid to this day. That was about 20 years ago. I don't think she made it out.
Joe Budden
Let me hear about what. Tell us about the logo.
Kenya Barris
I got a chance to meet and tell the story of the logo.
Joe Budden
Facts.
Kenya Barris
And I went into it and be completely honest, not even thinking he would. I just. I was going to get the chance to meet him. Did not in any way, shape or form think he would let me do it. And, you know, when you. Sometimes you go around white people and, you know, immediately they're comfortable, there's a certain energy. He has that energy, you know what I'm saying? He had that energy. Like, you knew immediately he was super comfortable. And also, he had a bullshit detective, you know what I'm saying?
Joe Budden
He didn't know when it wasn't, you
Kenya Barris
know, when some people were talking and, you know, when they've been around and we just hit it off. And when they called me and said, you know, I could do it, I really was like. I got nervous because I was like, oh, this is. This means something, you know what I'm saying? Especially after you read his book, because his book is so honest about the life that he had. And he was there before the NBA was with the NBA, black and white, you know what I'm saying? Dave Bob Kooza, you know what I'm saying? And all the way through till now, that's why so many people showed up and said yes. And I. You know, for me, it was telling the story of more than basketball, telling the story of more than a man. He's telling a story about somebody who was an icon and who I learned a lot from and who I became. And I. For me, the story that, like, when I met mj, I had never met MJ before. I wanted to. And I went on, literally nervous, whatever. And to see him walk in, he has aura, you know what I'm saying about it? He has aura. He walks in. You almost can hear him walk in, you know what I'm saying? Something feels different in the room. Like the temperature changed, you know what I'm saying? He comes in, he sits down. It's all there. The moment he started talking about Jerry, though, it changed for him. Like, he changed from usually, you know, he talked about his experiences, and he has that same bravado. But now he's talking about somebody that he looked up to.
Fat Joe
MJ told me Dr. J was his idol.
Kenya Barris
He told me that when he talks me, probably spoke about him Differently, you know what I'm saying?
Fat Joe
Yeah, he did. And he put him in a different.
Kenya Barris
Yeah, he said he felt like the NBA. The trinity for him was Jerry, Mike, Kobe, and Kobe. Jerry basically said the same thing. He said all three of them, they were all friends, they all talked, they all exchanged texts. And he said they all had the same thing, that they would die on the court if they had to. You know what I'm saying? That was that they had that cold blooded, just killer mentality. And I think that was. That interview changed and pivoted for me how I wanted this to be, because I was like, the dude who's the dude has this kind of respect for him. And I wanted to make it more than about basketball. And I started like getting into it. And Jerry was really up on like mental health, you know what I'm saying? Like his own mental health. And now men, our mental health, we often don't examine in a certain way because we're supposed to have a certain demeanor. We're supposed to keep stuff. You're supposed to sort of be a certain way. And that doesn't always let in that part of you that allows you to sort of be vulnerable, allows you to be sort of like, I need help. I'm not. You know what I'm saying? Like, it's so. And I think that that was a big part of his life. I think it was a big part of, like what his family had to deal with and what he had to deal with, you know what I'm saying? So it just. It was a crazy. Took four years to do. It was a crazy journey. And it made me really respect documentary filmmakers because they have to do it in reverse. You say, this is what your documentary is going to be. But truthfully, if you really want to do a good job for someone, If I did either of you guys stories, I would not be able to go into it saying what it's gonna be. I would have an idea of what I thought I wanted to be. But then as I talk to people and I hang out with you and we talk and I see things, it kind of tells you what it's gonna be. And your job is to build a bathroom.
Fat Joe
You know what's crazy? You were starting with a Skyrizi moment. Cause I gotta go use the bathroom right now. So the documentary, start with the Skyrizia Old man break, but give me two minutes. Sky Ritchie.
Joe Budden
It's a beautiful pill with a story to tell.
Kenya Barris
The 12 was hilarious. I was like, is it really 12? He wasn't 12.
Fat Joe
When he heard me, I'm not sure
Joe Budden
if it was even 12 or 13 or 14. That's. He said it so much. That's why I can. I know that. I know the number.
Kenya Barris
That's young.
Joe Budden
I've been diabetic since I was about 12. Right, Jay? 12. Yeah. You got it. It's 12.
Fat Joe

Fat Joe

Joe Budden
The age gap that's not too far apart makes it perfect, too, because I actually grew up looking at him. But then we actually got some contemporary time, being in the game together and went through some of the same things. No.
Kenya Barris
What made y' all want to do this? Was there a moment y' all hanging out and we should. Like, we should do this?
Joe Budden
Nah. A few years back, they had the Rock team. We had a few meetings to do something, and then it fell through. And then out of nowhere, I guess volume came back, like, yo, we wanna be interested in creating a show with Joe and Jada. And we was with it because we was already gonna do.
Kenya Barris
Had y' all done something together before?
Joe Budden
No, we never did.
Kenya Barris
How did they know it would work?
Joe Budden
Yeah, he asked how they know it would work. They thought it wasn't gonna work. This. They counted us out. There he goes. Are we rolling.
Fat Joe
Now? I'm trying to explain something.
Joe Budden
You're messing up the angle.
Fat Joe
Listen to what I'm saying. I gotta show you. No way. That had so much swag. I said, damn. Thank you. He was like. I said this. He been a sugar ill. What the.
Kenya Barris
What we're talking about?
Fat Joe
We talking about that logo, Joe and Jada.
Joe Budden
He asked us.
Fat Joe
I know, but you saying earlier that his swag was crazy. What are you talking about?
Joe Budden
He asked us, how did we get to here with me and you and
Fat Joe
the people thought I was not here when I left.
Joe Budden
Two nice ears to listen while you went on your Skyrizing promotion. Me and my brother was chopping it up. He said, yo, how did. How'd y' all even get a show? What made y' all get together? And da, da, da, da, da. And how did y'. All. How did they know it was gonna work?
Fat Joe
I'm telling them.
Joe Budden
They didn't think it.
Fat Joe
He's top five, dead or alive.
Joe Budden
He's still.
Fat Joe
There's actually I'm trying to tell him go ahead he's actually There actually are human beings walking around thinking that he's top five rapper of all time. Right. So he comes with a whole different type of authenticity and the aura around it. Me I'm the guy they don't admit but I hit hits out the I'm big Poppy Ortiz. I think by now they exaggerated the numbers. So the numbers they were saying. Everybody who Had a podcast. It was like, just got 50 million. Like, they made money. They were the first to the Gold Rush. But the numbers, a little exaggerated, right? It's great money, but because we smashing them, like, so we. I know. I'm in the algorithm of the Money with air, right? So. So I pretty much know what these guys could be making or not. Like, you know, Because I know the numbers. So these guys are not like us. Unless you got kidnapped in Africa, unless you perform in the Philippines.
Kenya Barris
I told you what happened.
Fat Joe
I just told the show. Unless you got. Unless you perform in the villa in Brazil where they just kill 69 cops the day before there, where you're performing. Unless you perform in the club in Brooklyn with a guy, you don't know if the promoter is going to pay you or he got three German Shepherds. You ain't did this shit. Sorry. And the worst nightmare ever was when somebody, another podcaster who was the king or whatever, turned on that YouTube and said, Jesus Christ.
Kenya Barris
Yeah, y' all came out, they gave
Fat Joe
this nigga a microphone. And then Jada, little by little, warming up, he's doing his facial expressions. He's bringing. They like, holy shit. These niggas, like the odd couple. They. They going crazy up. We going crazy. Let me tell you something. I'll tell you something. I admit to something. So we gotta deal with Netflix. The other day, I went. You know how they put episodes of more. I don't know if you've done this.
Kenya Barris
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Fat Joe
Yo, bro. Every day. If it ain't cardi B, it's Dr. J. If it ain't Carl, it's Kenya Barris. If it ain't him, it's this one, it's that one. It's the young Miami. This is insanity. What we doing up here? This ain't normal. This ain't normal. You can't take that. I'm not delirious. This ain't normal. If you. Look, I dare you. When you go to the hotel, you go to Netflix. Look at the episodes and more.
Kenya Barris
Yeah.
Fat Joe
John Legujamo. This one. That one. This, this. This. I don't even know. Because we just come to work, we get paid to do a. I love to do. He don't like to talk shit like me, but I love it. I am a talker, you know? They used to come to kill me. Kenya Barris, man, I gotta give it to you, because, you know, you're a real one. But I'm gonna tell you, they used to come kill me. Like, kill me.
Joe Budden
Are you listening?
Kenya Barris
Yeah.
Joe Budden
They used to come kill him.
Fat Joe
They had every reason to kill me. Every reason to kill me. I deserved it, is what I'm trying to tell you. And when they. Come on, guys, we're all Puerto Rican. We bought equal. Why would you want to kill me? They ain't got the gun in my face like this. I deserve it. Come on, guys, don't worry. You know, that's the.
Kenya Barris
That's the show.
Fat Joe
I get the fuck out of there every time. So you gonna put Fat Joe up in here to tell a story. And we the realest in the game. You guys are done. Everybody had to pack they shit up and pull out the white flag. You think I don't know? And there's one thing I don't respect. And it ain't a personal shot. Cause Jada does, right? I don't respect that. You've been hot for 10 years, and we only did one year. We're number one now. I don't want to hear, last year. Ryan Cougar, I seen you shot him out four or five times. Why he the hottest now?
Kenya Barris
He's been the hottest.
Fat Joe
No, no, he's the hottest now.
Kenya Barris
Yeah, he been.
Fat Joe
He been in recent award memorabilia ever. His hardware is now, bro. Don't talk about these old niggas. That had to be the same derat. Yeah, not me. You can't trick me out of. I'm. Yeah, I'm crazy. Yeah. I'm insane. But it's all in good reason.
Kenya Barris
Yeah.
Fat Joe
And I know what it is. And you not young niggas scared to death. Y' all threw that shit up. You went, let me tell you something. I'm from the South Bronx. Telling you, I'm from the South Bronx. They invented hip hop music. I was there as a kid for the invention, as a fan. Not crosstown. Not this. Grandmaster Flash. My brother was a crate boy. Melly Mel. Mr. Ness lives in my grandmother's village. The first female MC Shy Rock lives in my projects. Ike C, the first Latino MC group. Nah, nigga, I'm there. I'm in the Mecca. I'm there. I'm not crosstown. I'm not hearing rumors. I'm not this. I'm there in the soil. I'm just telling you all that to let you know that the Bronx ran hip hop for about the first 12 to 13 years. There was nothing. You could be Eminem and rap, and you live in Brooklyn. You not getting it. Nobody. It was just Bronx mania, right? It was a time like that. I'm in junior high school. We doing the talent show. I do. She'll only come out at night. Demeaning every time. Nothing to do. I seen that here. I performed that, right? Hauling notes, right? Three girls came out to dance, and they played Run DMC in the Bronx, home of hip hop. All we knew was the Bronx. I watched 1000 niggas look and say, oh, it's over. This going to Queens fast. Like, easy pass. I watched the whole Bronx. They played Run DMC for the first time. The whole said, we knew it was over. That shit was like. That's what happened to all these podcasters when they saw Joe and Jada, they said. They said, let us front. Let us try. Let us keep going. And trying to act like we the one. You ain't been kidnapped. You ain't been killed.
Joe Budden
You ain't been kidnapped.
Fat Joe
The Iron Sheik didn't ask you for perhaps something for the. No, I ain't she. They just not. And the fluidity is. And they. It's just not the same. We need more.
Joe Budden
You got a strength of coffee.
Kenya Barris
It's always. It's the. The new energy is everything. I feel like I love it.
Fat Joe
Listen, we went from YouTube to Netflix. First of all, what was the one
Kenya Barris
we did back in the day during.
Fat Joe
No, we did it on my IG. Yeah, we went from YouTube to Netflix. Everybody said, you crazy. This, this, that. They used to diss me every day. I don't know. They used to diss me every day. Now, I've been looking at them. So the way these guys. The up and coming. Let's just say the up and coming podcast is because you don't like me to say I'm matching you. There's a section of YouTube that's like AM radio. Good morning. Stepped up without them knowing. They're doing better every day. Their content was us. So Fat Joe say some crazy. Yeah, I met the algorithm. They whole show is out of here. We giving them content, and they're like, y', all, fuck these guys. They ain't really hot. Now we on Netflix. They don't have Netflix and chill, so they can't really do the commentary every day about.
Joe Budden
They do have Netflix.
Fat Joe
I thought. Miss. Miss. I thought everybody has Netflix and chill. Don't got 9.99. You think I need that customer out of here? Like, I don't know what these people talking about. If you ain't got Netflix and you ain't got 9.99, you can't buy a fucking button. I hate Fat Joe. I'm not worried about you. I'm Worried about the money. That's all I'm ever worried about. Of course we're preserving the culture. Of course. This is hip hop. This is where everybody feel comfortable. We never do negativity on here.
Kenya Barris
I love.
Fat Joe
This is all positivity.
Kenya Barris
I'm sick of everything being the negative shit, you know what I'm saying? It can be amazing day in the world, and one negative thing will come up, and that will be. The Internet is so happy. You know what I'm saying? Like, literally, it could be. Arguably, everyone's like, this is the best day ever. And the one negative thing, that's all everybody would talk about that whole day. So I love that.
Fat Joe
So ice spices in McDonald's. Yes. Some girl starts with her, look how Fat Joe thinks. Crazy Fat Joe girl smacks Ice Spice, right?
Kenya Barris
Who was wrong?
Fat Joe
The girl. You can't put hands on the Ice Spice eating her chicken McNugget, whatever. And the girl come up in there, she's like, yo, she smacks her. Ice Spice, a real girl, she got.
Joe Budden
Ice Spice got the fuck out of. She gotta get rid of that friend.
Kenya Barris
Done. That's that circle getting smaller.
Fat Joe
Listen, I'm talking about negativity in social media. Ice Spice gets smacked.
Joe Budden
She's.
Fat Joe
Of course. She's from the Bronx. She gonna defend herself. She gets up, tries to get about these two females. A day later, the pretty girls, what's their name? Dress Dior and all them, they fight in the club. Whoever them girls are, huh?
Joe Budden
Who?
Fat Joe
Jada Waiter.
Joe Budden
All right? Because you gotta get.
Fat Joe
If you don't know who Jada Waiter is or dsdr. See, something's wrong with you, brother.
Joe Budden
You don't know nobody's name.
Fat Joe
You know, I'm fried, but I know who they are. They get it popping in the club. When they hit two females,
Kenya Barris
somebody just died, too.
Fat Joe
Hello, little kid. Hello. He got it. He got it. He got it. The girl come up, she smack us. He got it. The girl smack Ice Spice. They get it popping.
Joe Budden
Yeah, I heard that.
Fat Joe
The two pretty girls get it popping now. The two pretty girls in UK want to get it popping. Fucked up. She ran over her with a car. Now she got a body. She killed the girl. The other pretty girl murdered her. This is all generated registration.
Joe Budden
She gonna get up.
Fat Joe
It's all generated from social media negativity. They seeing this, they seeing. They don't. They'll. They'll. They'll mimic everything till somebody dies.
Joe Budden
That's a great valid point you made, my brother.
Fat Joe
Hello.
Joe Budden
Very. You caught. Took an hour and a half and it was very effective. We all got that.
Fat Joe
So social media, I have you doing shit you don't want to do.
Kenya Barris
Yeah.
Fat Joe
And so all this negativity, all that, I don't even. You know what? I'mma be honest with you. I know everything that's going on, but I'm pretty much in the bubble now. I go home, I do my graffiti. If I don't go to a game or somewhere, I'm getting paid, I stay home. It's just like that right now in the streets and social media and all that, it just got me. I look, you know, I've always been a guy. I never got high and all that. I've been a guy that could look at you and be like, oh, no, I don't want to do that. That's what happens. So I'm looking at social media as so negative. I'm like, let me just stay my ass right here.
Kenya Barris
Keep your head down.
Fat Joe
Because this. And they love it and they celebrate it. And they come every day that they start some more. And they start. And I'm just looking at all this and everybody's ratting and everybody. How about. There was a time where people used to ride horses, not cars. Somebody's grandmother or grandfather saw the horses turn into a car and then turn into a phone. They then turn into an airplane. That worked. Where is he going? I'm at the point where this nigga
Kenya Barris
starts conversations way ahead
Fat Joe
and then back.
Kenya Barris
I gotta see where this goes.
Joe Budden
You can figure out.
Kenya Barris
This is. It's always. It always. It always lands. Let's land it.
Fat Joe
Come land it. I don't know what I was saying no more. It was. Besides, we started with horses.
Joe Budden
Somebody.
Fat Joe
I don't even know what else.
Joe Budden
Somebody on a horse that turned into a car. And then you stop.
Fat Joe
Because we're watching the evolution of destruction through this source of social media. And so I just gave you an example.
Joe Budden
Nah, I don't. Are y' all listening to this?
Fat Joe
I just gave you. Nah, but I. I. Today's mathematics. Can I. All this shit goes into.
Kenya Barris
Yo, what can I add to this, though, in a good way? That's just what you're saying about the chicks fight. Not even think about it like that.
Joe Budden
That was great.
Kenya Barris
I. I'm gonna say that there's a other version of it, too, that if that can happen on the negative side, we can see Coogler, we can see you, we can see that. We can see literally the positive vibrations. And I'm not even that kind of person. I don't even talk. I'M saying.
Fat Joe
But like, no, that's good shit, you
Kenya Barris
know what I'm saying? We can. I think there's a version of people start emulating I don't need to talk shit about another person to be dope. I don't need to bring talk to my else down to be dope. I don't need to do this. I cannot fight and still be hard, you know what I'm saying? I feel like, you know, I felt like there is another version that people can look at, you know what I'm saying? That's why I was. So when I look at, like we talk about Will Smith, you know what I'm saying? Like, Will, for every year of his life that we knew him, kept winning without being what everybody said you had to be. That's why I was so, you know, upset to see anything that happened if I'm saying negative to him. Because I feel like everybody has a bad moment. But I still remember I'm still gonna always root for Will. Cause he did it so big, so long without having to do the shit they said we had to do, you know what I'm saying?
Fat Joe
Also, let's shout out Chris Rock. I saw him got like the gentleman and he's a legend. But Will Smith's moment was almost like a young Disney star. You ever see the, like, Zendaya has to go from Disney to Euphoria, you know, just Justin Bieber goes from a Disney star to 76, tattoos in his face. And this because they try to eliminate that. That image, I think. How about. I know Will Smith premeditatedly smacked.
Kenya Barris
Oh, you think so? Yeah, I think he was having a bad day.
Fat Joe
I met. I'd seen him right after he told me, yo, he had that coming. He might, he might.
Kenya Barris
I think he did feel that way.
Fat Joe
No, he said, I don't care what he thought. You was one of the first celebrities I seen with Will after that, you seen some screening of some shit. But the man told me, yo, he had to get that. I said, damn, Will ain't give a fuck. It wasn't like a spur of the moment.
Kenya Barris
It was something that was a hell of a place to do it.
Fat Joe
Did it momentarily fuck up the bag, you think for Will? Yeah.
Kenya Barris
Will agree to that, you know what I'm saying? But the bag is so big, you know what I'm saying? At a certain point you're like, was it worth it? You know what I'm saying? Not maybe for him it was. But I feel like my point I was trying to get is I Think I love that y' all don't fucking sit up and, like, I feel like so many men right now, and this is no offense to women, but are not handling themselves like men. You know what I'm saying?
Fat Joe
Like, they say that again, please. Y. For the men out there, you're not handling yourselves like a man.
Kenya Barris
Like, I don't think men sit up and gossip.
Fat Joe
It's the fucking truth.
Kenya Barris
And talk, you know what I'm saying? Publicly, you know, we might stuff behind. We'll talk, you know, to each other. But the idea of, like, that is not a manly trait, you know what I'm saying? To get on and, you know, and gossip, gossip, gossip, gossip, gossip. And I feel like that's becoming celebrated.
Fat Joe
And it's not something that men come up here. Everything changed. That's why I stay home. I'm home. I'm in the time machine. Everything changed. Ben slept with a woman 20 years ago. He bring this shit up 20 years later. Yo, I fuck such and such in 99, 89 and shit. Like, yo, bro, we don't need they doing that.
Kenya Barris
That's so against Covid.
Joe Budden
Yeah, that's.
Kenya Barris
It's just so weird, yo.
Fat Joe
Everything we thought, the snitching shit outta control. Like, I'm ready to snitch on somebody. I'm ready. They fucked me me off. I was the last of the Mohicans. Let me tell you something. I'm so anti snitching. Like, it's so much in my DNA, in my blood, that I go to the Knicks game, right? And I'm celebrating. You know, I go in there, the parking attendant is nice, the cops are nice, the security's nice. The khalizzy, the guy who gives me the khalizzy, everybody's happy. It's one guy who's security. I'm talking about. The Garden's really, really white. You really see who the real employees are. And there's one Puerto Rican in the whole stadium. He's security, and he's by my seat. And if you see this or your nephews or your sons show you, please just watch for yourself. And every time, everybody knows Fat Joe. Every time I try to get up to take a picture, he goes, yo, the line, yo, not now. This is the only Puerto Rican that work in this shit. Keep fucking with me. And I tolerated because I'm a nice guy and everybody loves Fat Joe and this and this. And I said, you know what? Had to talk to myself, my inner self. I'm about to snitch on this nigga
Kenya Barris
it starts so far ahead.
Fat Joe
It's so far ahead. Have you ever seen our leader of the New York Knicks, our great owner who takes care of us, James Dolan? Have you ever seen a. I don't
Kenya Barris
know what it is.
Fat Joe
As much as this man took care of me and looks out for me. He always got a face like he don't want to be bothered. You ever seen that? He be there like, so he know I salute you and he salute me. Fat Joe, number one fan, but I don't bother that man for nothing.
Joe Budden
Yeah, he looks like he doesn't want to be bothered.
Fat Joe
No, no, he looks like he don't want to be bothered. I was this close, okay? I went to the Garden one day and I said, okay, nigga, I'm telling. No, no. It's fucking day. 25 years. I never asked Mr. Dolan for shit in my life. Nothing. I don't bother him. Stay. I said, today. This motherfucker tells me I'm standing on the line. Somebody's walking through. I said, I'm going to Mr. Dolan. Cause he's right there. Hey, Mr. Dolan. Yeah. This guy harasses me, him, him in front of the stadium, this man. And I always. I don't know how to fire people. I don't like to get people. But whatever happens to him, if he's cleaning toilets from there, he's up and down.
Joe Budden
He deserves it.
Fat Joe
The niggas on unemploy. And that one day is where I realized the Puerto Rican man with God, that was the one day he smiled at me and was like, hey, Mr. Joe. I said, this motherfucker, God right here. I said, shit, they saved this motherfucker. Cause I'm snitching. I'm going to Mr. Dolen. Yo, this man, I can't take it. He's him. Thank God he smiled at me yesterday. You know,

Kenya Barris
So this is the whole thing. I don't understand. I'm. Read the whole. So everybody's snitching at the same time. The idea, though, of when is snitching okay, and who is it okay for? The reason that I feel like it's not okay for what we're here for, because these are niggas from the street who does a cold and what they live by. If that's what you're gonna live by, that's what you gotta die by.
Joe Budden
If you're a criminal through crime, you shouldn't snitch.
Kenya Barris
I agree.
Fat Joe
But I tell my child, you're not
Joe Budden
under any of them umbrellas.
Fat Joe
You have the right to remain silent
Joe Budden
or call the police or call for help.
Fat Joe
That's.
Kenya Barris
There needs to be a distinction that put out there because it's becoming too many rappers and street niggas that are telling people, you can't snitch, you can't. And I'm like, that's. That's a culture.
Joe Budden
That's rules.
Kenya Barris
That's for that culture and for that lifestyle.
Fat Joe
That's the rules. But I'm gonna tell my child, snitch the rules. You know, I got a guy, I put on one of my albums. He's from Atlanta Bank. Oh, who? Big Bank.
Kenya Barris
Okay.
Fat Joe
He got a podcast that real the other day. He put a picture of one of them white boys crying that he put a song beyond it. Like, I forget what song it was. It was the funniest in the world. But we've reached a moment. We reached. It was a pivot. What you call it? A pivot. Not an end of the. He played end of the road. It was the end of. It's like everybody you thought was real, right?
Joe Budden
It failed you.
Fat Joe
And you sitting there, you just like. I mean, the snitch is this. Your mom gets robbed, your lady, your wife gets robbed, your daughter, son, whatever. They could call the cops on everybody. But if you out here pretending to be a gangster, if you out here talking in your music like you some super extra gangster nigga, and all of a sudden you get. It's like, what's my man From In Living Color? Remember the educated. What was the educated guy?
Kenya Barris
Damon Wayans, when he was Damon Wayans,
Fat Joe
where he was the educator, all of a sudden you were educated, y'. All. I'm a man.
Kenya Barris
Yeah.
Fat Joe
I'm snitching. This out of control. You had me fooled. So I stay home because all the rules I grew up by is I don't no more. It ain't. And, and. And I've been living by a code that they almost got me confused. Like, did I, I. When I go up the heaven, am I going to go up and speak to my guys and they gonna be like, man, you fell for that shit. You moved, like, you know what I'm saying? Cause my whole life I try for the. Yeah. Am I floored? Am I not a perfect guy? Am I this. Yeah, correct. I'm a sinner. Whatever you want. But for the most part, I try to follow the rules. Like, really follow the rules. So everything I grew up by and all the morals and all the codes, this shit got me confused. So I'm sitting here like, yo, this shit.
Kenya Barris
But that's social media too, because I feel like it's squashing everybody into one. And it's like everybody who's a rapper ain't from the streets, you know what I'm saying? But they feel like they have to be or have to assume, you know, have people assume that they are because they want to be part of a lot.
Fat Joe
Like Tyler the creator.
Kenya Barris
Yeah, but Tyler the creator's from LA and from the hood, you know what I'm saying? Like Tyler Crater.
Fat Joe
How about that?
Kenya Barris
People don't know Tyler Crater's not like a yee. Like Tyler Crater is like a. You just don't. He chooses to rock the way he does, but he's from Hawthorne and car, you know what I'm saying? Like, he from a real part of la. He grew up around real niggas, you know what I'm saying? He just is the way he is, and those are real dudes around him. And I love the fact that he doesn't feel the need to sort of be something that he doesn't feel like he is, but he's not.
Fat Joe
I think that's the way it works for me. Since day one, I have friends who are the nicest, sweetest guys, tell the greatest jokes, worked hard their whole life. This, this, that. And I respect them for who they are. You ain't gotta be extra tough for me. How about the tough guys don't act tough? The more tougher the guys is, the more dangerous this is. The more nicer the guy is when you beat him. I met guys that. Their fucking reputations. You're doing a movie with one of these gangster guys from la, right?
Kenya Barris
My conception, my concept. Yeah.
Fat Joe
You know how legendary is that name, he's a. Every time I got around him, he was a perfect gentleman.
Kenya Barris
That's right.
Fat Joe
So every time you hear all these rumors and when you get around the real ones, you like, wow.
Kenya Barris
I was just a Top's house, right? Top.
Fat Joe
Another one.
Kenya Barris
Top is a legend. But he's a reputable.
Fat Joe
No, no, he's a super legend bounty hunter.
Kenya Barris
He's a reputable, you know, I'm saying one of the most lethal hoods in Los Angeles.
Fat Joe
Beyond respect. In a different way. I know of him.
Kenya Barris
That's right.
Fat Joe
Forget the hood. I know his jail time.
Kenya Barris
Yes. And when I was at his house,
Fat Joe
he was beyond respected in jail. His people are wildly respected in jail. Yeah.
Kenya Barris
You go around town and it is. He is happy to be in his beautiful home. Beautiful home. He lives next door to Elon Musk and the King of Qatar. And he says he don't want none of the street, you know what I'm saying? Like, but he knows what he. He is what he is and he's a real one. And I feel like, to me, that's what, you know, I respect the idea. When I go around him, I feel at home, I feel comfortable, you know what I'm saying? He doesn't need to be a gangster. He is a gangster. You know what I'm saying? Exactly. And I feel like he doesn't need to talk about it, you know what I'm saying? He is about, you know, for me,
Fat Joe
it gets overwhelming, right? So. So shout out to the one year anniversary of my brother, Rich player. He got dynasty, commodity, cannabis in Harlem. You ever come to New York? Dynasty. But I go there for his one year anniversary. Every gangster, I counted in my one hour there 350 years of jail time. My one, I'm sitting there. I'm not gonna lie to you. It gets overwhelming for me to hear everybody telling gangster stories and it won't stop. And for me, Fat Joe. I'm gonna tell you something about Fat Joe. Fat Joe talk a lot.
Joe Budden
Hello.
Fat Joe
But the people that know, they know he don't talk a lot. The shit I can't talk about, I keep to myself. Legendary. Yeah. Like I got a treasure chest of out there. Like with the. Who killed Hoffa the Wow.
Kenya Barris
Yeah.
Fat Joe
For some reason they want to come to me. For some reason, all these guys who did the most historical you ever heard in your way, I'm sitting in Dubai one day. I'm not lying to you. I'm sitting in Duke, in Dubai one day with white linen on with the C shot. Everybody crack. What's up? I killed such and such in Dubai. Well, a dude had the nerve to tell me he killed Tupac. And the dude is a superior gangster of the ages. Nigga, they got movies about a. So I'm sitting there like this. I look at him one day, I got a tuxedo on with a fucking bow tie. Somebody come up to me and say, yo, you seen the movie Paid In Fool Joe? Yeah. I'm the guy who gave Rich Porter, the guy to the ten Keys. He did this. And that's why he get like, I don't know why they have to tell me every aspect of American gangster culture and break it down. I don't want to hear that if I'm with these niggas, yo, let's get money, man. Let's eat a fucking A sandwich or something. Like, why I gotta hear. No, it becomes overbearing for me. It becomes. It's too much gangster. And right now, I'm looking at all these niggas telling and all that. I'm like, yo, I don't even know what. I don't know what's going on.
Kenya Barris
You talk about Mike Assessment. Mike told me. He was like, you from here know a lot of people. You have these relationships, you know what I'm saying? I grew up in the city, and so people coming out and he was like, you don't want no parts of that. He was like. Because once you start going down, he was like, Mike is like, go buy some real estate. Let's go to the Dominican Republic and hang out. He's like, once you start putting yourself. And there's a lot of people we all know that say they from hoods that ain't even from la, you know what I'm saying? They getting pressed, they getting taxed because they want to be a part of it. So that once you become a part
Fat Joe
of it, how do they want to be a part?
Kenya Barris
You can't get out of it.
Fat Joe
They want to be a part of it.
Joe Budden
Yeah.
Kenya Barris
They want to be a part of something. They want to feel like. And it's all fun and games until it's not.
Fat Joe
What? No, it's never fun and games. And the thing about is, you ain't getting up. Let me tell you the biggest problem. Problem with la. Crime, politics.
Kenya Barris
LA is not safe.
Fat Joe
It's not safe.
Kenya Barris
I'm saying that right now, anyone is not safe.
Fat Joe
And what I'm trying to tell you is I done been with the King of Bel Air. I'm talking about the. The Jerry west of the gang, the Logo of all logos. These things, we can't talk about Kiss. But what I'm saying is, I don't come out the club and niggas front on him. The guy on the Mount Rushmore, the fucking guy who went to the moon first. The illest nigga ever lived. Yo, homie, what that about, homie? I'm like, yo, if they don't respect the. The fucking John Gotti of. I'm sitting there with the John Gotti of LA like this, like. And they trying to play with him. I'm like, yo, they got no respect out here. Here, one of the biggest rules you have to learn in life, don't invite me to Yonkers. If there's a crazy in Yonkers that could scream on me and try to stick me up in front of you, don't do it. People invite you to their hood. Don't go to Yonkers.
Joe Budden
Nothing's gonna happen to you.
Fat Joe
I'm not saying that. Kiss. I'm not talking about you personally.
Joe Budden
They gonna give you.
Fat Joe
I'm not talking about Yonkers with you. That's great. But I've been in situations where I done went places with guys that I thought had the juice. There didn't really. I'm talking about Younger, before rap, and they ain't really had a juice. So you think you with that dude. And then they acting funny. You like, yo, my man, I thought you had this on live. You ain't got this. Everybody got juice. Everybody from here, everybody there. Till you go there, find out that nigga be like, yo, get outta here, Joe. It ain't safe. It's stuff online right now. Like, are we lying? This shit smoking mirrors like a motherfucker out here. And I overstand that. So that's why, you know, all the crazy guys, the real killers, they love Fat Joe. I never had a killer, not like Fat Joe. In fact, when I chill with them, they tell me I'm crazy. They said, you crazy, Fat Joe. This I. I've been with guys that. Their name is so scary in New York that I've talked to them and I got a million dollars of jury on like this. It's, Excuse me, Joe, one second. They go across the street, they stick up a rapper, a known rapper, come back with the chains in their neck. You know, I just go over there, you know, I stick up such and such, you know, this. And I'm looking at him, I'm saying, you what? Yeah, just rob such and so. Okay, this, this, that, and so. I don't understand that language, you know, I don't understand that. That's why I stay home. And I draw a lot.
Kenya Barris
Keep your head down.
Fat Joe
It's stuff a lot, you know these niggas. The point is, listen, guys, whether you rap, whatever the case may be, don't go to somebody's hood and they acting and pretending like they got the power. You shoot dice in that lobby and the real guy comes out. Cause the money stay on the floor. They say, leave it here, right? What they say at them dice game? They be like, yo, yo, yo, yo, Wood. Because some people try to act like they not on social media or they're not watching. Everybody got a dummy account. They try to act like this. So I'm really thinking, Michael Jordan ain't on social media. He playing golf now. He on the boat. He not fucking with that, right? But when he says, my wife. Behind your project. You know what face to face is? Face to face is when your mother goes and begs welfare to give us some food stamps so we can eat breakfast. This episode gives deep insight into the pressures and joys of being a trailblazer in Black Hollywood. Kenya Barris, Fat Joe, and Joe Budden use their platforms to reflect, joke, and issue wisdom—on envy, fashion, loyalty, handling the downsides of the spotlight, and what it means to live by the “codes” of various worlds (street, industry, family). The conversation is a blueprint for how real ones move and what it means to sustain greatness while lifting others up.
