Uncle Murder
What that Louis. To let people know you could do this, too. Without these big companies, you could do it. That's why you went and got the Louis after you made it, man.
Rip Michaels
Yep. The dude was outside your studio with the blanket. Get the out of here. I got the. I got the it. You got the chain.
Uncle Murder
He didn't get stabbed.
Turbulence Tony
Shut the up. Yeah, yeah.
Uncle Murder
It's the boy L. Jet Lenny.
Turbulence Tony
And it's your boy Turbulence Tony.
Uncle Murder
And it's the real Report show.
Turbulence Tony
Yo, y' all make some noise and tell them who you are today. We got the one of the biggest comedians in the world here, man.
Rip Michaels
And Rip Michaels, man. It's hot to Rip Michaels.
Turbulence Tony
Make some noise for Rip Michaels.
Uncle Murder
Rip Michaels in the building.
Rip Michaels
Thank you very much for having me, man. I appreciate it. Love the studio, man. Love you, staff.
Uncle Murder
No, we appreciate you coming in, man.
Turbulence Tony
That's what I'm appreciate you being here. I heard you from Chicago, south side.
Rip Michaels
Oh, 86 racing. Yes, sir.
Turbulence Tony
So tell us your story, what it was like growing up in Chicago.
Uncle Murder
Are you good on 63rd? I'm just trying to.
Rip Michaels
Yeah, I'm going on 63. I'm going on south side.
Turbulence Tony
What part of Chicago?
Rip Michaels
86 and racing. 86 and racing. So, yeah, it's just been a journey, man. You know, Chicago's a great place. It could be wild. But I was always.
Uncle Murder
Of course, I said I'll be weird.
Rip Michaels
But I grew up in an era where they was taking starter coast in Jordans back in the day when they was getting. Getting dudes so they triple fat goose.
Turbulence Tony
Yeah, I got robbed from my startup coming from school.
Rip Michaels
Right. That's the generation I did.
Turbulence Tony
That's my generation right there.
Rip Michaels
Okay. We the same type of.
Turbulence Tony
Hell, yeah.
Uncle Murder
That's that era. That's that era right there.
Turbulence Tony
I still don't think y' all got the best pizza, though.
Rip Michaels
Of course we got the best pizza. Cause you know why?
Turbulence Tony
Come on, man, tell me.
Rip Michaels
We don't do cold reheated slices. That's what I can never get used to. I can't never get used to the fact that y' all are willing to
Uncle Murder
walk in, walk in a pizza pot
Rip Michaels
and take pizza that's been all day, all day long and let it warm it up.
Turbulence Tony
Oh, y' all got us deep dish pizza in Chicago.
Rip Michaels
We got regular slices, too, but the deep dish is.
Turbulence Tony
Y' all keep talking that deep. Just shit is all right. Mad tomato sauce that shit is.
Rip Michaels
I don't eat healthy, that's all.
Turbulence Tony
See, the whole thing is, when you come to New York, you can't judge the pizza off. The dollar slices in the city don't judge it off of that.
Rip Michaels
So who got the best pizza in New York?
Turbulence Tony
To me. I'm gonna go with Jamaica Southside. Jamaica, Queens. We gonna eat it on the show, too. I should have brung it here, too.
Rip Michaels
Margaritas over Gabby's, though.
Turbulence Tony
Yeah, Gabby's is Ja Ru. Shit.
Rip Michaels
Okay, but I'm just saying Gabby's north side. But Gabby's is good.
Turbulence Tony
No, Gabby's is good, too.
Rip Michaels
I would have said pizza, but when
Turbulence Tony
you think about Queens, margaritas, man. Yeah, not Gabby's. Shout to G. Gabby's, too. Gabby's is like north side. Like, I even think they got pictures of Ja Rule in there. But Gabby's is good, too. Cause like the barber, go to Gabby's. But margarita's is south side. But that been open since n was kids.
Uncle Murder
Gotcha.
Turbulence Tony
We talking about 30, 40 years in business. You want pizza? That's way better than Chicago, go to margaritas. I've had margaritas.
Rip Michaels
I have. I have margaritas.
Uncle Murder
And that's better than.
Turbulence Tony
That's way better than Chicago.
Uncle Murder
Know what he talking about?
Rip Michaels
I have had margaritas. Cause I be out there, like, when it comes to Queens, big shout out to everybody in 40 baseley.
Turbulence Tony
Oh, shit.
Rip Michaels
Oh, yeah. Mook Diamond. The whole.
Turbulence Tony
Oh, shit. Shout out to Mook Diamond.
Rip Michaels
Those are my cats.
Turbulence Tony
Oh, okay. Queens in the building, baby.
Uncle Murder
You don't know nobody in Brooklyn, my man.
Rip Michaels
We going Brooklyn. I'm gonna say I don't know. Everybody I know in Brooklyn is Jamaican or Haitian, so I don't really know. Oh, man.
Uncle Murder
Oh, man. It's all good.
Rip Michaels
All my Jamaicans. Because I used to have rooms in Brooklyn. I used to do squads. I used to do Venus. I used to do footprints. I used to do all those rooms.
Uncle Murder
Okay.
Rip Michaels
And a big shout out to my. What we gonna do Brooklyn? We got a big shout out to Rasheed, man. One of the funniest comedians to ever do it. That was Poppy. Ain't no ship. Remember The Jamaican dude in Jamaica Store. And Poppy ain't no snitch. That was him. Big shout out to him. That was Brooklyn. That was Brooklyn.
Turbulence Tony
You working, man?
Rip Michaels
Yeah, I mean, it's just been an interesting journey. Cause when I came to New York, I came to New York homeless. I had never been here in my entire life.
Turbulence Tony
Serious.
Rip Michaels
I literally, I met Dave Chappelle in a club and he was like, man, if you ever want to find out if you're funny, you gotta go to New York. And I was like, you know what, I'mma go. I got off the Greyhound bus with my daughter and I was like, all right, New York, let's see what we got to offer. And I was homeless for about a year. I used to sleep outside, like Bryant park and the FIT Institute and big shout out to the FIT Institute. There was this Haitian security guard that would let me sleep there every night by the vents because it was warm. And he would tell me, just be out by 6 o'. Clock. And that's what we would do, me and my daughter. And I just constantly started doing comedy and more comedy and it just led to me doing other things. And I think the funniest thing about it is I used to sleep sometimes outside of 15, 15 Broadway. We all know that's MTV. And I was like, one day I'm gonna be on that network. You know, I start off as the warm up guy, making people laugh in the line and just taking that and elevating that to the next level. And then went from being warm up guy to being on Wild N Out and a whole bunch of other TV shows.
Turbulence Tony
Yeah. How'd you get to Wild N Out? Cause Wild N Out is, you know, a big syndicated show. Shout to Nick Cannon. Shout to everybody that's on Wild' N Out. Extremely funny. How many years was it? 10 years now. 10 years.
Rip Michaels
Wild N Out has been on for 26 seasons. So it's been on shit. Yeah.
Turbulence Tony
I didn't even realize that. You never get tired of Wild' n out.
Rip Michaels
Like 2026 season. The longest urban running comedy television show history. Yeah. 2016. Coming up on 27 now. So we about to do a whole new season and we doing it live, man. And if you want to talk about Queens, man, I actually started with all this queen. No, but I'm just saying it. It's just funny that he said queens.
Turbulence Tony
We ain't going to do that today.
Rip Michaels
It's just funny because he said Queens. Cuz I actually, you know, I started the Wild now tour in Queens. It's Just funny that I actually.
Uncle Murder
Oh, look at that.
Rip Michaels
Because it started from Nick. You know, I used. I was writing for Nick's Stand Up Don't Shoot, and. And I wrote for a lot of comedians and write with comedians, and we were doing that. I was writing for him, and he was watching Katt Williams, and we was at. I think it was on Ontario at Anaheim, and he was watching Cat, and he was like, yo, man, one day, I want to do that, man. I was like, what are you talking about? He's like, I want to sell out arenas looking Cat. He's just sitting there in front of, like, six, 7,000. And I was like, that's what your dream is. And I got to give Nick his flowers because Nick put me on the show and took me under and, like. And took me on his wing and let me write for him and let me do all these different things. I was like, man, if that's your dream, I got you. We gonna be sitting down arenas in six months, bro. And he was like, really? And he just looked at me like, ah. So I went ahead and I started and I booked it, and I did it at Amazura in Queens, and I had 1500 people show up, and Nick thought it was a joke. So Nick was like, man, what are you talking about? We got a show. I was like, remember you told me you want to do this? And it's the day you said you was free. So we got Amazura. And he was like, look, man, I got a show in Chicago that's paying me way more than that. And I was like, listen, I promise you, I can't give it to you now, but when you. Before you step on stage, I'll have $10,000 more than you was getting in Chicago. And God blessed me, and I hand out flyers every day, and I promoted the hell out of it. And it went from just one show with 1500 to two shows back to back. And then we did another show in Patchog at the Soundgarden. It was crazy, which is crazy. Yeah. And it started right there in front of a room of 1500 people. And the next thing you know, six months later, we was on every single arena there was. And we was doing, like. I was number two on Polestar that year for promoting it.
Uncle Murder
Yeah.
Rip Michaels
Like, pushing it together. I sold out two once.
Turbulence Tony
You. You talking that.
Rip Michaels
Oh, my God. I still hold a record in Detroit. I still hold a record. I mean, not Detroit. I still hold a record in D.C. for selling out two arenas in one night. We did show Palace Arena. We did I think 14,000. And then we went over to Capitol One, took a police escort and did 17,500. We had a 7 o' clock show and a 9 o' clock show.
Turbulence Tony
So how does a comedian turn into slash promoter. How do you transition to that?
Rip Michaels
People not allowing you on stage, people and big shout out to all the New York comedians. But they got this like hazing thing where it's like, they'll put you on when you're not funny, they'll make fun of you, and then when you get funny, they won't book you no more. And being told no so many times, I was like, you know what? I'm gonna do my own rooms. I'm gonna do my own grind. And I started doing like little bars, like Squads and Venus and like Footprints. And then next, before you knew it, I had had like six rooms. And then Rasheed passed away. And I remember his brother in law coming to me and said, hey, they about to lose the rooms that Rasheed had. Cause Rashid had like five rooms. And I was like, well, I won't let that happen, man. You know what? I'll do the rooms. I think the budget was like $800. I was like, take 600 and give it to his kids. And y' all take that. And I just do it for the $200 and I'll book one comedian. So I was getting $100 and I was like, I'm gonna keep this so his family could do it. And then that turned out crazy. Overnight, I literally had 12 rooms. At one point. I ran New York. You couldn't go to a borough that I didn't have a room in. I used to have two shows every single night. And when you came to New York, you had to say, Rip. Cause Rip could put you on for two weeks straight of just doing comedy. And then I turned that into just like promoting myself like any other artist. And I'm like, you know, I'm gonna promote myself. I'm gonna do this. And everybody kept coming around me like, hey, Rip, can I be on the show? Can I do this? So then I just tried to start uplifting us all. And then just next thing you know, I was doing. That's how the April Fools came about. I was like, all right, cool. You know what? Instead of doing it by myself and pushing myself, I'm gonna take all my friends and we gonna go ahead and sell out the Westbury Music Fair. We gonna do something that nobody ever done. 5,000 people just to see us. And 10 years later, now I'm doing 18,000, 19,000 people. I mean, we got regular comedians doing Chris Brown Drake numbers. We performing in a round. Like this has been a phenomenon. Sold out the Garden in three weeks on a Wednesday.
Turbulence Tony
Yeah. Cause it seems like everybody from Wild N Out, like took their success and did other things. Like, it wasn't like, yo, we just gonna piggyback off of Nick Cannon. Yo, look, we gonna do our own thing. Like everybody off that show was kind of doing their own thing.
Rip Michaels
Yeah. Because it's an institution. I look at Wild Nut as the best institution you could ever be on for content. And big shout out to Niall and Nick because they put you through like a boot camp. Like, you come in as one thing and you leave out as another. You have to find your own voice in that show. And they'll be screaming at you. You'll see some of your favorite streamers and Instagram famous people that just can't hack it. They'll be crying because they'll tell you are not funny. Just cause you're funny on your phone. It doesn't mean nothing. Doesn't mean shit. And people just be walking out crying and they be hurting feelings. But if you make it through that other side, you make it to and you find out who you are and what your voice and your strength is. So that's why you see the Rip Michaels, that's why you see the 85 South. That's why you see the Matt Rifes. That's why you see the Kevin Harts and the Mike Epps. Cause everybody came from the institution. The D Rays and the Corey Holcomb, we all come from that wild out there.
Uncle Murder
You ever perform somewhere and then have a good turn on how you wanted it? Like it was a bad night, man,
Rip Michaels
that I ever presented and how you
Uncle Murder
bounce back from that. Like have a performance and it didn't go as you planned?
Rip Michaels
Like, oh man, we all get booed any given Sunday. That can happen any night, man. Of course, man. Like coming up in the game. Of course. I think the worst boo I ever had when I was in college. Cause I actually started doing comedy when I was 13 years old. My auntie Jockey wasn't really my auntie was my daddy's girlfriend. But he made me call him. I didn't know that. I didn't know that wasn't my auntie. I had no idea. I really didn't know my daddy girlfriend. I didn't know. I was so happy I was doing comedy. I was like, mama, Mama, look what Auntie Jackie bought me. She was like, that ain't your goddamn auntie. That's your daddy girlfriend. I go outside, your Uncle Charles gonna take you to the. I had Uncle Charles, too. Don't get it twisted.
Uncle Murder
Got you.
Rip Michaels
My parents been together 42 years.
Uncle Murder
They've been cheating.
Turbulence Tony
41.
Uncle Murder
I had Uncle Charles, too.
Rip Michaels
I had Uncle Charles, too. And that's the true story. People think I'm joking, but that's the true story. I love my parents. Don't judge my family. I don't live with a. Nah, it's all good.
Turbulence Tony
All good. Listen, people go through shit. Y' all got the hardest job in the world to make people laugh. It's not easy to make people laugh and be in front of a crowd, you know, and we on a real report. So, you know, we gonna ask you, who are your top five comedians of all time for you, of all times.
Rip Michaels
See, that's a difference. If you gonna go all times, you always gonna go greats. But if you gonna go, who are my favorite comedians? That wouldn't be of all times' cause if you're gonna go all times, you're gonna have to. Eddie Murphy, you're doing the Richard Pryors, you're doing them. But if you like who my favorite comedian is, that's grinding and doing it, I would say I'm gonna give big shout out to Tony Roberts. I'm gonna give big shout out to TK Kirkland. I'm give big shout out to Dion Cole. Like, these dudes are, like, revolutionary. Because you gotta realize I watched Def Comedy Jam as a kid and seen
Uncle Murder
all these cats perform same, man, I love comedy jam.
Rip Michaels
You know what I'm saying?
Turbulence Tony
I was a little kid watching Def Jam comedy.
Rip Michaels
Back watching Deon Colton on him at 10 years old, going like, wow, One day, I want to be like this. This is what I want to do. And it's weird being the position I am because that was my only dream in this whole. Was like, to be just on Def Jam. I thought that was it. I thought once you got that, you was rich.
Turbulence Tony
Not rich comedy back then.
Rip Michaels
Yeah. They was only paying people $777.
Uncle Murder
That's crazy. When you find out what it is for real, right? That's crazy.
Turbulence Tony
I mean, we looked at it like, come on. That was the biggest. Yeah, that was like the biggest comedy show to watch back in the days on tv, it was jam comedy. All agrees, who went through, how many people, how many greats came out? Everybody.
Uncle Murder
Whoever you could think of. Everybody you could think of Bernie, Max, demar. And I remember everybody on defcon. Rest in peace. Everybody was on that, though, man.
Rip Michaels
Everybody. Like, I remember Bernie Mac.
Turbulence Tony
Yeah, he had. Go ahead, Go ahead.
Rip Michaels
No, no, go ahead.
Turbulence Tony
No, no. I was gonna say Bernie Mac had a style like, what's my. What's the father that played in kidding Robert Harris? That was the black father that was with that kid. Oh, my God. That's one of my favorite to me, him and Bernie Mac had that same kind of style.
Rip Michaels
Bernie was a beast, man. And I remember meeting Bernie Mac when I was, like, I think I was 12, going inside the Cotton Club, and he used to host it. And they used to bring me in through the kitchen because I wasn't old enough to come inside. And they would just let me perform, and they would sneak me right back outside and just watch him. He would always just tear that room apart, man. And him. And back then Diane Quarter and Tony Schofield and just like. It was just fraternity of just, like, people, just a brotherhood. Damon Williams, just so many dope comedians that just embrace you to be like, hey, man, let's do this. But if you wasn't funny, man. They don't play around, but New York don't play around. There, of course, y' all with Sydney clubs, they would throw pepper pot on you. They would throw oxtail and gravy. I seen a comedian get a mop bucket thrown on them.
Uncle Murder
I think they do mop water on
Rip Michaels
Gerald Kelly one time, and I was like, woo. And he looked at us like, what we gonna do? I was like, we gonna get you a towel. These niggas is killing. Get you some cotton L. Paper towel.
Turbulence Tony
New York is tough, man. Remember Showtime at the Apollo back in the days? Motherfuckers or throw everything.
Uncle Murder
Sandman get you the fuck up out of there.
Turbulence Tony
Yeah, man.
Rip Michaels
Yeah. It's just a time. But that don't happen anymore. There is no more booing now. Everybody just sits and watches, and they just go on your page and say, you're not shit later on. But they don't really boo like they used to. Well, sometimes they do. Sometimes in my shows that I put on, sometimes people can get it.
Turbulence Tony
How was it when. Cause I know you brought TI out to one of your shows and it was crickets.
Chumba Casino Announcer
That.
Rip Michaels
Okay, first of all, let me explain. First of all, TI Cause you think
Turbulence Tony
a rapper should be doing comedy.
Rip Michaels
Of course, of course. TI Is a funny, funny comedian and person. TI he has great stories. And it's just. I just think it's just that night and he went around the country blaming me for getting him booed first of all, I didn't set TI Up. TI Everybody knew you was coming. I didn't. I did. He tried to say that they thought he was doing music and they booed him. No, the crowd knew he was doing comedy. I promoted his comedy. I had his drops in comedy for the first time. That was the whole appeal.
Uncle Murder
The music you promoted is him coming out up to perform.
Rip Michaels
No.
Uncle Murder
So when he came out, it was crickets doing stand up comedy. They were like, what the is this?
Rip Michaels
No. He got an aurora. I did not. Man, y' all think y' all not
Uncle Murder
gonna put that on me.
Rip Michaels
Bobby J. He's not gonna put that on me.
Uncle Murder
Set him up.
Rip Michaels
I did not set him up. He came up and he went up. And the crowd was so happy to cti and everybody knew was doing comedy stuff.
Turbulence Tony
As a rapper, not. Nope.
Rip Michaels
As a comedian. That was the whole reason everybody bought tickets, because he had been doing comedy. It wasn't his first show. So they had been doing comedy across. And they changed his name to Tip Harry. So he'd been doing comedy for a minute. So when he said it that he was doing comedy. Cause my friend write for him. And he went up and the crowd. You watched the video yourself. The crowd listened to him for about seven minutes. They was like this. They didn't pull it right away. They was like this.
Turbulence Tony
I thought you was gonna say seven seconds.
Rip Michaels
No, no, no, no. They listened to him and they was like, T I. And then he was like, yeah. And then it was like, okay, okay. Mm mm. Boo. And they couldn't take no more. I think he did a joke about, like, something about heated seats in the gas station bathroom and the girl sitting down. That's when they.
Uncle Murder
The man who wrote the jokes for him wrote some bad jokes.
Rip Michaels
I don't think nobody wrote jokes for that. I'm just saying that he just. And he took it personal. Like, it happens, bro. Like, you get booed. It just, you know.
Turbulence Tony
How do you feel about comedians getting mad at people with the crowd?
Rip Michaels
I think that's wrong. Any given night it can happen. I just wanna say that. Any given night it can happen. Like, the crowd looked at him and it didn't end bad. Cause afterwards, I didn't make fun of TI I didn't go out there and roast TI like, we had comedians. We posted that for. No, I didn't go out there. I played his music and said, why would y' all do that to a legend? That's a legend. DJ Envy plays some music for. We played all his hits and we Rocked out for a few seconds and showed. That's the king. He tried something different, and that's what it was like. The crowd was just looking at him like, hey, man, you can have whatever you like, but it ain't comedy
Turbulence Tony
to me. Look.
Rip Michaels
And his wife was there on the other side. She was like, who can you run to? Cause she couldn't escape either, to fill that empty space. And it just happens. He took it too personal. He cut his hair off. He got the number one song. He back rapping now, like. Like, it's just. Maybe that was the. The thing for him to do, like. But go back. But he's funny. And listen, if TI Is watching, you are more than welcome to come back
Turbulence Tony
anytime and do comedy. Watch this. He don't.
Rip Michaels
You know.
Turbulence Tony
Oh, no.
Rip Michaels
Oh, I'm sorry.
Turbulence Tony
We just listening to the stuff and watching this shit.
Rip Michaels
Oh, yeah, I'm watching. Okay.
Turbulence Tony
But I just. I feel like. No, this is why. I feel like TI Was too big. Look, look, this is the purpose. No, we ain't too.
Rip Michaels
No, TI get you some tubies so you can watch this shit.
Turbulence Tony
Yo, look, though, the reason why I say that. Cause, like, when I see him, like, I seen another clip of him, like, arguing with somebody. You can't. For me, if I'm a comedian or want to be a comedian, because people say I'm a funny motherfucker. I don't want to go to the show and argue with nobody. And to me, a good comedian, you don't got to just pick somebody in the crowd to fuck with them. Like, I'm not coming. Look, I don't want to come to your show and get roasted, my nigga.
Rip Michaels
But that is real.
Turbulence Tony
That's why I never was on that.
Rip Michaels
That's a possibility. That's a new way. That's a new way of doing. That's called, you know, crowd work. So sometimes that is cool to do crowd work. And that's like. Because sometimes people sit there and you want them to have a good time. So you see somebody say, like, unfold your arms, man. Enjoy yourself, man. Why you looking like the last kid picked up bacon? No, I'm just saying. No, I'm not saying that. I'm not saying that.
Turbulence Tony
That's what he's saying.
Rip Michaels
I'm trying to make it home.
Turbulence Tony
Look, that's like, see, y' all are
Rip Michaels
smiling with me on. On the camera. They be like, rip, go downstairs and get you a coat.
Uncle Murder
Good.
Rip Michaels
You need to ride to Harlem. We got you, man. Go get in that car. And then be like, Rip had an unexpected heart attack on the way to the bargaining center. It be like, another one, another heart attack.
Turbulence Tony
No, Rip, like, it's cool when, like, somebody's doing something stupid. Like, you talking like, Aries Spears. I seen somebody walking by and, like, you, like, this motherfucker, like, going to the bathroom, doing your show. Now, you deserve to get guided. But if I'm in the front, I don't want to take that bullet, man. I don't want to. Cause y' all motherfuckers be roasting motherfuckers.
Rip Michaels
But it's all in fun. I think some comedians do it, and I think some comedians that, you know, do do it. But it can be a lot of fun. It can be. Crowd work can be a lot. A lot of fun. Like, that's, you know, I was the woman guy for so many years. And, like, crowd work now, thanks to a lot of people, is revolutionized. Cause it's. You make jokes for people in that. In that space, like, but just roasting somebody, no, I think that's wrong. But, like, enjoying a moment, asking a question involving their lives and bringing joy to it. I think that's. I think that's dope. Cause my name is actually Rip. Mike Heals. It's not Michaels. It's actually M I C H E A L S. So I try to heal with the microphone. Cause I know my crowd. Like, I bring out a lot of hood people, regular people, but people buy tickets. And I think a lot of comedians don't realize who buys your tickets or what they go through to get a ticket. Like, some people, this is their last $25. Some people just came home. Some people got going on. Some woman just being abused is so much. And they come just to laugh and escape that and escape that. If you could take 10 minutes of somebody's day and get them not to think about what's going in their life and make them smile. Because comedians, all we do is really turn tragedy into comedy. Because there's nothing funny when you talk about being beat as a kid. But you're able to laugh so you can overcome it and make it a good memory instead of something that's tragic and let go of it. So I think that when you have that ability, you should harness it. And just like, that's why I don't always stick to my material. Sometimes I'll just look at the crowd and be like, tonight, the crowd don't want this. Tonight, the crowd needs this from me. Because I want everybody to go home and feel the way I'm not selfish. I don't want everybody just to hear my story. You know what? Oh, my daughter's going through this. I don't use it as therapy. I use it as to make everyone else feel good. And I think that's why I've been able to do these 18,000, 19,000 seat arenas, because that's the type of energy I put into it.
Turbulence Tony
God bless. 19,000 seat arenas is big, bro.
Rip Michaels
And I've done it in every facet, man. Not only just with the Wild' N Out tour, creating that. The April Fool's Comedy Jam. And it's comedy and music. I take my friends with that. That's hip hop and comedy together. So I take. It's like Fat Joe and Jadakiss on that. And that's. And Kodak Black. That's how that is. Because those are friends of mine. I'm like, you know what? We gonna do the comedy. Y' all do the music, and we gonna have fun. And if you look at fall, that was me taking all my R and B friends and putting R and B together with comedy. So that tour was super dope. Cause it was fun. It was like, one minute you'll see Brandi, and then you'll see D Ray, and then you'll see Monica, and then you'll see DC on fly. It just took that rhythm of just sitting there when the band is playing while you're waiting for the next act and just make it a nonstop party. Wow. Yeah. And even if the offer rip, that's when I go in the crowd. And I'm super interactive with that tour. And it's just these platforms that I created just for my friends, just for everybody to have fun. That's for us to go and say, look what we can do as a culture without the big machines behind them. Cause I didn't know that. I didn't know that every comedian had some huge machine. I didn't know that every comedian signed to some weird Live Nation AEG deal. I didn't know comedians wasn't selling out their own arenas. I didn't know that. I thought everybody was doing it themselves. I found out the hard way. I was supposed to do, like, a weekend in Vegas with Kevin Hart, and we was gonna mix the brands and do like, he has a Kevin Hart weekend. And we was gonna mix with Wild Nap Weekend, and we was gonna do this huge collab. And he came back to me and he was like, yeah, AG Said they can't. And I was like, AG Wait. Wait a minute. I thought it was, oh, it's not you. It's. Oh, it's AG. You have to. Okay. I didn't know you had a boss partner. Whatever you want to say. I didn't know that. So when you ask me a question, it's me. It is not no Live Nation. There's no AG behind me. There's no. It's just me doing and you doing,
Turbulence Tony
and you're doing ball clays and big stuff.
Rip Michaels
I've done every single arena in this country.
Uncle Murder
At least you knew Kevin Hart was supposed to do something together.
Rip Michaels
You're saying we were gonna merge his Heartbeat Weekend. He had a thing called Heartbeat Weekend, and then we were gonna do the two brands, and that's what's gonna be Heartbeat Weekend, because that weekend, we. We did the Wild Out Live. So I had Wild out live at Caesar's Patterson. We was gonna make it. Do a pool party and make it a whole package because, you know, Kev did Wild N Out, right? He was on it for a while, but then AG said, you know, we don't really want to merge like that. I was like, oh, okay. But I didn't know that you. You had to go back. I didn't know people had that. I didn't know I was probably one of the only comedians to sell out arenas by himself. I didn't know that. I had no idea. I thought that's what everybody be. I was out here working too hard. I didn't know that
Turbulence Tony
everybody ain't doing that.
Uncle Murder
Cat probably just didn't want to do that shit, man.
Rip Michaels
Nah, it's really. It really. When you look at it and when you look at y' all went on tour, that was Colin. That was Live Nation when y' all went on tour.
Turbulence Tony
Yeah, that's Live Nation.
Rip Michaels
That was Live Nation.
Turbulence Tony
When y' all went Live Nation. Aig.
Uncle Murder
Some things was without Live Nation, they
Turbulence Tony
looking at him like, without that company, they. They probably like, well, who's he with? You know what I'm saying? But he's doing it on his own.
Uncle Murder
He's proven. If they see, they could look up your receipts and see what the fuck you do.
Turbulence Tony
Yeah, but sometimes the corporate don't know until it's too. That's when they come. When they see him selling out Barclays in the garden and doing this, and then they'll come and snatch him up.
Uncle Murder
But till now, these companies tried to
Rip Michaels
holler at you, RIP oh, 1000%.
Turbulence Tony
Of course he wanted the money for himself.
Rip Michaels
No, I just felt like when these companies approached me, I just didn't think the Deals made sense to me. It didn't make sense to me because I've already done it. So when someone is offering me a deal and they got these deals, and I tell any person, I will never do a cross collateralization deal because that's just a loan, they're giving you a loan against your ticket sales. And if you don't sell it, then you don't get it and you pay the loan back, which makes no sense. And then if I'm already doing 18,000 seats and you're splitting my gate with me, but then out of splitting my gate with me, you're selling me your marketing, you're selling me your production, you're selling me all these different things that's coming out of my share of the money, not your share of the money. And then at the end of it, I'm splitting my ticket sales with you. But you're not splitting anything that you bring. You're not splitting. You own Ticketmaster. Why am I not getting any Ticketmaster revenue? You get food and beverages. Where's my food and beverage? Where's my part of parking? So what are we splitting? So how are you going to come to me and offer me something? I don't need your marketing. I've already proven this market. I'm already selling out 18,000 seats, so it added no value. So when I sit with these companies, they look at me like I'm crazy. Well, we could do more shows. So you want me to do more shows and get half the money? How does that make sense? Give you half the money and do more chores for half price.
Turbulence Tony
We know he shit when he starts talking about park. Cause that's that Live Nation. We learned that being on tour. Like they care about the beer sales, the parking.
Uncle Murder
Better believe the fucking.
Turbulence Tony
Just the little shit parking.
Rip Michaels
The smallest money ticket price. They don't care about your ticket price because on top of each ticket, Ticketmaster takes 19. It's $19 on a $30 ticket, right? It's a $19 fix on a $30 ticket.
Uncle Murder
The money is all natural.
Rip Michaels
So if you just think about it, if it's average is 19 to $20. On top of that, you get nothing about. And then once your tickets start selling, they have the ability to resell them. So they have the ability to pull the tickets, sell them for a higher price, and give you the original price. So you think you're selling your tickets for $150. They pull the ones that are selling when they see how quickly and they see the EDPs and they see the Ratios and they pull it and then they resell it for higher, and you still get the $100, but they sold for 300 on other sites. Gangster.
Turbulence Tony
What made you get so creative to put the music with the comedy?
Rip Michaels
Just my friends. It was just all my friends. Like, it's be no different. You say, hey, Rip, I'm coming through. I want to go up or, hey, Rip, I want to be a part of that. I want to do that. Like, Jacques was like, rip, let's go. And like, I met Jacques in the airport, and I was like, hey, man, I'm put you on Wild N. I think you dope. And he just came to one of my comedy shows and he thought I was lying. And I was like, man, watch. And then two months later, he was on one of the episodes and he was on tour.
Turbulence Tony
I was shook to get on Wild N Out. Cool, man. For that, man.
Rip Michaels
Big shout out to Rich Homie Quan. Rich Homie Quan. I was like, man, I hear Rich Homie Quan. And Rich Homie Quan was like, hey, man, I was like, man, I got you. You. I'mma put you on this. Wild out there and put you on this. And we gonna do all these different dates and. And we got him back popping. And when he passed away, I actually did the rem. The memorial for him at the. At the State Farm arena because his brother called me, and his brother was like, hey, man, you know, he passed away last night. I. I think I spoke to him the night before, and he's like this. He had passed away. And I was like, wow. And he's like, everybody just. It's just a bad space. I just wanted to tell you because right now, everybody's asking for your money, that money back, and we gonna get him the money and just give a second. I was like, but I don't want no money back. Keep the deposit. And on top of it, I'm gonna pay you the balance. And on top of that, I'm gonna raise money for you too, because I understand what you gotta do.
Turbulence Tony
Real nigga shit.
Rip Michaels
And then I had his family come up, and everybody was like, oh, you shouldn't do it. I had his family come up, I had the whole thing, and we rocked that arena. We showed him so much love. And in front of 20,000 people at the State Farm arena, his family was sitting there, his brother was sitting there, and we played his music, and it was just a huge celebration. I've always just looked out for my friends and people that. That they care about me, right on a while.
Turbulence Tony
And now, how many places y' all been around? Did they go overseas before?
Rip Michaels
We did Canada and we did London.
Turbulence Tony
That was the only two states, definitely.
Rip Michaels
But April Fool's, now it's gonna be in London. So april fools Barclay, April 4th, and
Turbulence Tony
then we OVO arena, baby. Shit going, definitely.
Rip Michaels
And big shout out to Daniel. Daniel been riding with me every day.
Turbulence Tony
Daniel Jean, that's my man.
Rip Michaels
Yeah. Crazy.
Turbulence Tony
Yeah, he's a good guy.
Rip Michaels
He's a crazy, crazy dude, man.
Turbulence Tony
Talk about some of the writing you did, because Daniel was telling me he did a lot of writing behind the scenes, too.
Rip Michaels
I write for a lot of people. I've written for a lot of people over the years on different TV shows. I was the head writer for the Nick Cannon Show. Rolling Wendy. A lot of different things. But then that's just way a way of, you know, continuing down your path and politicking with everybody so y' all can, you know, come together and create.
Uncle Murder
Is that how you was able to bet on yourself, like, from doing that? Stacking that money like that? I'm doing all this on my own, man.
Rip Michaels
It was never about money. To this day, you don't even hear me talking about money. It's not about money. I talk about how many people it is.
Uncle Murder
Got you. Got you.
Rip Michaels
It's about the people. It's not about. It ain't. Not one time am I going like, hey, it's gonna make this fifth. I'm going. We going to do 18.
Uncle Murder
But you got a Louis hat on. Louis boots, Louis jacket, Louis shirt.
Rip Michaels
This is all Daniels. This is all Daniel. This is all this is. I promise. You're spending the money. No, Daniel said to me, that ain't about the money. Listen, you're getting the money and you enjoying the money. You're spending the money. No, no.
Uncle Murder
Actually, that's what I'm saying.
Rip Michaels
No.
Uncle Murder
Well, that. You bet on yourself.
Rip Michaels
With the grind.
Uncle Murder
You bet on yourself, Rip. That's what it was.
Rip Michaels
Rip.
Uncle Murder
You bet on yourself, man.
Turbulence Tony
I want to.
Rip Michaels
No, Michael Blackson told me all this, so it's all fake. All right, Gotcha. Okay. All right. This come from a blanket on Canal. Sucker. Don't get me robbed out of here. You robbed me. You looking at me like I'm. You don't have me out there all hemmed up. I got you walking through Brooklyn.
Uncle Murder
I got you, Rip.
Rip Michaels
Yo, yo, here come Rip. He coming out, Canarsie. He getting off the L train. I got you, Rip.
Uncle Murder
I got you, Rip.
Rip Michaels
Nah, it's hello, it is Ryan.

Danielle Robe
is Danielle Robe, the host of Bookmarked by Reese's Book Club, a podcast by hello Sunshine and I Heart Podcasts. I am partnering with Simple Mills and I've just found a new Go to snack. When I'm reading Simple Mills Almond flour crackers, I thought I'd review them book style because these crackers deserve it. Let's start with the premise. A snack that doesn't leave you feeling weighed down. Made with almond flour, sunflower seeds and flaxseed. Nutrient dense ingredients your body can use with protein, vitamins and fiber, not just empty carbs. That's a solid foundation and just like a good premise needs great writing. Simple Mills almond flour crackers also taste amazing. Classic flavors like fine ground sea salt, a crunchy texture and a light finish that leaves you feeling uplifted and energized. It's like a taste of sunshine in every bite. For a change in genre. Try Pop' Ems. Cheesy, airy and poppable crackers with an unexpected twist. They're packed with veggies. Here's my verdict. Simple Mills crackers are a snack staple you'll always want on your shelf. Okay, I've hit my metaphor quota for the year, but these crackers are worth it. Find Simple Mills at your grocery store.

Turbulence Tony
Hello.
Reese's Announcer
Look, I'm not here to judge what you listen to. I'm here to judge you for not eating Reese's while you listen to it. Reese's. Ashley, go back to the nature sounds. Nice. That's really nice.

Rip Michaels
Honestly, before I had a heart attack, I literally wouldn't care. Like, if you look at any old stuff, I didn't really care how I dress like or. Or really care to push myself. And I always stay behind the scenes. Like, I've done these things for years, man. Like, like. And I never really even thought about being in the forefront. I was just always happy just to do what I do.
Uncle Murder
Got you.
Rip Michaels
And then, like, I thought I was gonna die when I was in the hospital and I had a heart attack at the Apollo. Yeah, I had a heart attack twice. I had a heart attack in Atlanta. And then I thought I was gonna get better. And then when I had the heart attack after the show at the Apollo, I just, I've been in hospital. I was in the Hospital for like. Like eight months in the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix. And big shout to Daniel and Joe, and they came to visit me. And when I was in Lij, big shout out to Envy and Nick Hannah came to visit me. It just. I just thought I wasn't gonna make it. And everybody thought I wasn't gonna make it. And I'm honestly still not better. I'm on a heart transplant list. I still gotta get a heart. Looking for that. But that's why every day is grateful. So when I. When I came out, I started really caring. And I was like, God gave me the ability to even be here. Like, I'm here. I'm here. And sitting here. I'm not supposed to be here, but I'm supposed to be here.
Uncle Murder
But you supposed. I'm about to say you supposed, but
Rip Michaels
I'm supposed to be here. So now I promise God that I will. I will. I will. I won't stand in the background anymore. And I'm going share my story so other people can do. And now I'm gonna step out on faith and I'm gonna raise my stock and go higher than I was ever supposed to go. Because it's not about me. It's about me sharing my story so the next person can do it and it can continue keeping it to myself. Then I'm not creating a legacy for anyone to come behind me. So I'm gonna show people that you can do this. I'm gonna show people you don't need these deals. I'm gonna show people that you can take it from being a small comedian, sleeping on the streets of New York with your daughter, to selling out arenas and being number two on Polestar and having an Apollo special that did a million in, like, the first week, like, independently. And that's what I'm trying to do.
Turbulence Tony
You had a heart attack on stage,
Rip Michaels
right on side of the stage. And it was rushed to the rush.
Turbulence Tony
So what goes. Cause when we. When we interviewed Tracy Morgan, he told me and Murder we. I got the closest to God in this fucking room. And you're the second comedian that could say that shit too, right?
Rip Michaels
Yeah.
Turbulence Tony
So you're on stage and, you know, you. It's just, you know, you on the road. We all know the road life, it fucks up your body, you know, Murders.
Uncle Murder
You're not really getting no sleep.
Turbulence Tony
No sleep. Now, what goes through your mind? Like, what do you see?
Rip Michaels
You.
Turbulence Tony
Do you. When your eyes are closed, you have a heart attack. Like, what the. Like, what did you see when your eyes were closed? Like, what was it like having a heart attack on stage? It's just crazy to me because I think fat man school did. He died on stage. Rest in peace.
Rip Michaels
Yeah.
Turbulence Tony
So, like, what was going through your mind? Like, what's the mindset.
Rip Michaels
That I hope everybody enjoys the rest of the show and that I hope that I don't stop it so it can continue? Damn.
Turbulence Tony
That's just crazy.
Rip Michaels
That was the first thing coming to my mind because I put those people in those seats. They came out because I gave them a flyer, I emailed them, I text them them. And I know how hard it is sometimes to get the money up for that. So that was the first thing I was thinking. And then the second thing I was thinking was like, what would I leave my kids behind?
Uncle Murder
What would my.
Rip Michaels
My wife behind? What. What did I leave them? A whole bunch of behind the scenes stuff that nobody knows. Yeah, that's what I was thinking about.
Turbulence Tony
Damn.
Rip Michaels
That's all it was in my mind.
Turbulence Tony
That shit is deep, you know, it's great.
Rip Michaels
Yeah.
Uncle Murder
See, being that, that happened. So how do. Do you. Do you get nervous now? A little bit when you perform on stage?
Rip Michaels
Stage? No, Fearless now.
Uncle Murder
Got you.
Rip Michaels
I'm fearless. It's fun. It's fun, man. It's fun. What is what Pac say? That doesn't kill me. It only made me stronger,
Turbulence Tony
strong, bro.
Rip Michaels
That, that definitely I'm fearless now. And I'm just. Because I'm like, I'm back on stage, I have an opportunity to be funny. So now I took it for granted before. I'm like, ah. So now every show is. I treat it like it's my last show. So whether I got a million shows or 50 shows or one show, maybe the Barclays in it, whatever it is, I'm. I'm gonna live it and enjoy it to the fullest. I'm gonna give. I can't say give it with all my heart because then that's not that much. Yes.
Turbulence Tony
That's only 19% comedian.
Rip Michaels
That's only 19%. That's crazy, man.
Turbulence Tony
That's crazy.
Rip Michaels
Cause you're waiting for heart, man. It's a thing. You waiting for a heart. It's weird, man.
Turbulence Tony
What's the process with that?
Rip Michaels
It's just a weird process.
Uncle Murder
You gotta move a little easier, though. You can't be as energetic as you.
Rip Michaels
I, I keep EMTs now everywhere I go. I, I got a home health aide and a nurse that I gotta, you know, my readings are every day. I have doctors to constantly monitor me. And some days are good, some Days are bad.
Uncle Murder
Got you.
Rip Michaels
Some days I don't get out of bed, and some days I'm. Sometimes for weeks. I'm no good. So I try to make sure everything continue to move with or without me. And that's just a different pacing. Because when you, you, you looking for a life organ, you realize that someone has to pass away or someone has to no longer need it for you to live and survive. So it just puts you in a whole different mind state. Like, I ain't gonna lie to you now. Every time I hear an ambulance, I'd be like, is that my blessing?
Uncle Murder
Damn, that's crazy.
Rip Michaels
Is that for me, when somebody gets shot, I'll be like, don't shoot them in the chest,
Turbulence Tony
shoot them in the legs.
Rip Michaels
Please, just headshots only. I don't need a brain. I just need art.
Uncle Murder
Please, headshots only.
Rip Michaels
Oh, my God, no. Only on the real,
Uncle Murder
man went from being so positive.
Rip Michaels
No, I'm just happy to be here
Uncle Murder
saying, well, just hit somebody in the
Rip Michaels
head so I can come to you. If you gonna do crime, make no crime. Paper.
Turbulence Tony
No, I mean, yo, come on, you.
Rip Michaels
Now I'm just trying to make it lighter. Cause it's a real serious situation.
Uncle Murder
Definitely.
Rip Michaels
And every time I talk about it, somebody emails me or somebody DMs me and tells me thank you, because they're going through it. And my heart is congestive heart failure. It's congenital. Cause I got it from my dad, but it's congestive heart failure. So it's nothing that I did from eating. It's not from diet. It's just something that just over time, from not knowing that this was something inside of my heart that just caught up. So that's why I teach preventative. I teach tell people to go get checked out, find out what you got to do. Find out before it gets to that point. So that's. And then if you notice, I donated my last show. We donated to American Heart association. And I constantly have people like, at the Apollo, we taught cpr. We constantly. I don't want anyone else to go through this, because you don't have to.
Uncle Murder
If you would have got checked out earlier, could have prevented it, I could
Rip Michaels
have lived a different lifestyle and I could have kept up, kept my own heart just a little longer. Just a little longer. Because I'm going in there thinking it's like, oh, you're gonna give you a stint, you know, oh, just because you ate too much. No. And then did that right hard calf. And they went in there and literally like, in seconds, they were like, stop everything. And all the cardiac arrest team came in, and it was like 10 doctors standing over me. And then they just took me out of the thing. And it was just like, you got to go to ccu. You gotta. And the nurses start changing from, like, being jokey, jokey. I'm just making jokes to. And prescriptions to, like, asking me like, who's your pastor? And, like, quoting. I went from prescriptions to scriptures and just a hard thing to take. And I did it. I was by myself during that time, and it just. It's hard, man. It is hard. But God got me through is really hard. When you. You faced with that. And you got to prepare yourself, your
Turbulence Tony
family, what you gonna live them. Cause we all know we programmed to die. It's gonna happen one day.
Rip Michaels
Yeah.
Turbulence Tony
It's part of the program. So right there. But it's when it comes and it's right there for you. That's crazy. On stage.
Rip Michaels
No, on the side. On the side of the stage.
Turbulence Tony
Stop. We're just, you know, doing what you do on the side of the stage.
Rip Michaels
On the side of the stage. Yeah. The first thing you think about is buy yourself a lot of fake Louis. Buy as much fake Louis Vuitton as you can.
Uncle Murder
Get the fuck out of here.
Rip Michaels
Don't let these Europeans have your money. You give this shit straight to the black man with the blanket.
Uncle Murder
He bought that Louis shit to let people know you could do this shit, too. Without these big companies. You could do it. That's why you went and got the Louis shit after you made it, man.
Rip Michaels
Yep. The dude was outside y' all studio with the blanket, and I was like, you know why? Get the fuck out of here. Get out.
Uncle Murder
Get the.
Rip Michaels
Out here. I got the. I got the jacket. You got the chain. Now this is real. Don't rub it. Your art, it's gonna fell apart. It's a show. You can't touch it. I can't move.
Turbulence Tony
That's why I'm like, this purses now. I seen they got, like, some. Two strings that they hold. Like, they could just. It just go.
Rip Michaels
Oh, yeah.
Uncle Murder
Damn, boy, they not playing with.
Rip Michaels
So you know my guy, then. Big shout out to Mama Dew.
Turbulence Tony
Now tell us who you gonna have on this comedy show, man?
Rip Michaels
April 1st comedy show. I'm gonna have a lot of dope people on it, man. It's got Marlon Wayans. It's got Bruce Bruce on it. It's got Bill Bellamy and a whole bunch of other people. Justina Valentine, she's calling me now she's like, why aren't we at the barking center?
Uncle Murder
So Justina.
Rip Michaels
Yeah, it's got so many different people. So it's like a lot of cast members from Wild now are making.
Uncle Murder
So I'll leave my wrap up alone.
Rip Michaels
Hold to call her right now. You want to tell her?
Uncle Murder
You go.
Rip Michaels
Here you go, Justina. What's up, man?
Uncle Murder
What's good, man? He with Uncle Murder. I said I'm telling him to tell you leave my wrap up alone.
Rip Michaels
Use your face.
Turbulence Tony
Hello.
Rip Michaels

I don't think no one stands a chance going against 50. I don't care who it is. 50. A different animal with that. Like, I don't know what it is. Like, I, I even got my own 50 cent store. He did a show called 50 Central on BET.
Turbulence Tony

He would come up doing comedy and I did the comedy on his show and I failed and I hurt myself cuz the floor was like shaky or some shit and I was like, I was like, oh, I'm about to get Paid. And I looked up and Finny looked at me and I was like, no, I'll just take a G. Size 11. Size 11. Listen, I'm all good.

That was like one of my favorite lines. He was like, first dude to cook crack on the George Foreman grill. How? Cause you gotta close it to heat it up.
Turbulence Tony

Rip Michaels
I don't think it's possible. When I see Jada, kids, I might have a George Warman grill. I'm like, please show me how you cook crack on this.

This episode of Joe and Jada’s “The Real Report” features an in-depth and unfiltered conversation with comedian and promoter Rip Micheals. The discussion ranges from Rip’s gritty rise from the Chicago South Side to New York homelessness, the evolution and impact of Wild N Out, the reality of promoting without big corporate backing, surviving a life-changing heart attack, and behind-the-scenes stories involving hip-hop and comedy. The crew also dives into epic moments like T.I. getting booed during his stand-up set, lessons from touring with legends like Kevin Hart and Nick Cannon, the mixing of comedy and hip-hop in arena events, and reflections on legacy, health, and resilience.
[04:00] Rip shares his upbringing on the South Side of Chicago, describing both the danger and community:
“Chicago’s a great place. It could be wild. But I grew up in an era where they was taking starter coats and Jordans…” — Rip Micheals
[06:38] His move to New York was a leap of faith—he arrived homeless with his daughter, sleeping outside Bryant Park and the Fashion Institute until he found his break:
“I met Dave Chappelle in a club and he was like, man, if you ever want to find out if you’re funny, you gotta go to New York…” — Rip Micheals
[07:35] Wild N Out now has 26 seasons—Rip helped start the tour version in Queens, going from small crowds to sold-out arenas:
“I used to sleep outside of 1515 Broadway… one day I’m gonna be on that network. I started off as the warm-up guy, making people laugh in the line.” — Rip Micheals
[08:19–09:41] He credits Nick Cannon for mentorship and betting on arena shows when others doubted:
“Nick put me on the show and took me under… If that’s your dream, I got you. We gonna be selling out arenas in six months, bro.”
“Next thing you know, six months later, we was on every single arena there was.” — Rip Micheals
[09:44] Rip still holds a record in D.C. for selling out two arenas in one night (14,000 + 17,500):
“We did Show Palace Arena… police escort… 17,500… a 7 o’clock show and a 9 o’clock show.” — Rip Micheals
[10:09] Facing rejection from NYC’s comedy scene pushed Rip into promoting his own shows—eventually, he ran over a dozen rooms across NYC, directly supporting comedians:
“Being told no so many times, I was like, you know what? I’ma do my own rooms. Next thing you know, I literally had 12 rooms. At one point I ran New York.” — Rip Micheals
[11:52] He organically built “April Fool’s Comedy Jam” into arena-sized events:
“Comedians doing Chris Brown/Drake numbers… performing in the round… Sold out the Garden in three weeks on a Wednesday.” — Rip Micheals
“You have to find your own voice… Just ‘cause you’re funny on your phone, doesn’t mean shit. People be walking out crying… but if you make it through… you find out who you are.” — Rip Micheals
[14:18] Rip’s personal faves: Tony Roberts, TK Kirkland, Deon Cole—salutes Def Comedy Jam era and legends like Bernie Mac:
“Back watching Deon Colton… at 10 years old going like, wow… One day, I want to be like this.” — Rip Micheals
[16:30] On tough NY crowds:
“They would throw pepper pot on you. They would throw oxtail and gravy. I seen a comedian get a mop bucket thrown on them.” — Rip Micheals
“He went around the country blaming me for getting him booed… The crowd listened to him for about seven minutes… Boo. And they couldn’t take no more… It happens, bro, you get booed.” — Rip Micheals
— [18:28] “You can have whatever you like, but it ain’t comedy.”
“Some people, this is their last $25… They come just to laugh and escape… If you could take ten minutes and make them not think about what’s going on, that’s a blessing.” — Rip Micheals
“I’ve already done it. So when someone is offering me a deal… a loan against your ticket sales. It makes no sense. I’m already selling out 18,000 seats… I don’t need your marketing… How you gonna come to me and offer me something… to give you half the money and do more chores for half price?” — Rip Micheals
— [27:52] On how venues profit off food, parking, ticket resale:
“Ticketmaster takes $19 on a $30 ticket… they pull the ones that are selling and resell them for higher, and you still get the original price. Gangster.” — Rip Micheals
“Look what we can do as a culture without the big machines behind them…”
[36:02–41:47] Rip recounts his two heart attacks (one after a show at the Apollo), his near-death experience, and how it changed him:
“I thought I was gonna die… now I promise God I won’t stand in the background anymore. I’m gonna step out and raise my stock… show people you can do this.”
— [38:50] On what went through his mind:
“I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the show and that I don’t stop it so it can continue… What do I leave my kids behind?”
[39:46] He’s currently on a heart transplant list (“waiting for a heart is weird—every ambulance siren, I wonder, is that my blessing?”).
[41:49] Uses his platform to support heart health advocacy and the American Heart Association.
“Don’t let these Europeans have your money, give it straight to the black man with the blanket.”
The vibe is honest, irreverent, and sharply humorous, embracing both the grind and the vulnerability of life in entertainment. The crew trades streetwise barbs, deep reflections, and technical insights into the business and art of comedy.
Rip Micheals’ realness, resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit shine throughout the episode as he underscores the power of persistence and self-belief. He offers valuable lessons for artists battling for independence, balancing art with health, and turning adversity into opportunity, all while keeping the room—and arena—laughing.
