Hey, podcaster. I'm Tim Wahlberg, your podcast performance coach, with another actionable tip so you can grow your podcast authority, generate leads, and convert with ease. Today's tip is don't start a podcast without a plan. Thinking about launching a podcast for your business? Awesome. But before you hit record, let me give it to you straight. If your plan starts and ends with buying a microphone, you're already off track. I know, I know you want cool podcasting gear, but the truth is, your mic doesn't matter if your podcast has no purpose. And I see this mistake all the time. I do free coaching calls every week with business owners who want to start a podcast. And the first thing I ask them is, why? Why are you starting this podcast? What do you want your listener to do after they hear your episodes? And that's when I get silence, or I hear I just want to get my message out there. No, it's just not good enough. If your podcast is for your business, it needs to serve your business. Otherwise, you're wasting time. So before you plug in that mic and start rambling into the void, let's talk about what you actually need to launch a podcast that works for you. I've got four steps. Step one is know your business first. This should be simple, because if your podcast is a marketing tool for your business, it will won't work if you're not clear about your business. So let's do a quick check. Can you answer these questions? What problem does your business solve? Who is your ideal client? What is your listener's desired outcome? And what do you want your podcast listener to do after each episode? If you can't instantly answer these, you're already in trouble. Because if you don't know what your podcast is supposed to do, how do you expect your listeners to figure it out? I hate to break it to you, but podcasts don't sell. People sell. Clarity sells. Stories sell. Strategy sells. Your podcast is just a tool, a really powerful one, but only if you use it right. Step two, align your podcast with your business. Now, even if you don't have clarity on your business, that doesn't automatically mean your podcast is going to work. Your podcast needs needs to be an extension of your brand, not just a fun side project. That means your podcast name and branding should match your business, not some random inside joke that only makes sense to you. Your content should reflect your expertise and attract the right audience. And your call to action should connect to your offers. Your podcast isn't just about getting people to listen. It's about Getting the right people to take the right next step. And this is where a lot of podcasters mess it up. They create a show with great content but no clear connection to their business. So what happens? Tons of effort, zero roi. Which brings me to step three. Make sure your podcast has a job. Here's the question. Where does your podcast fit in your business? If you can't answer that, you don't have a podcast strategy. You have a podcast hobby. Your podcast should have a specific job that inside your marketing and sales funnel. Is it attracting and nurturing leads? Is it positioning you as an authority in your industry? Is it answering objections and building trust before a sale? If your podcast doesn't have a job, it's not going to work. It's just going to be something that you do every week that doesn't move the needle. And that's how podcasters burn out. Which leads me to the biggest misconception. I hear a podcast with huge downloads is a success. Not necessarily. Which brings us to step four, Focus on roi, not just downloads. You do not need a huge audience to get results from your podcast. I'll say it again. Downloads don't pay the bills. I don't care if you have 10,000 downloads a month. If your podcast isn't driving leads and sales, what's the point? What's the point? ROI doesn't mean lots of listeners. It means that the time, money and energy you put into your podcast comes back to your business in sales. If your podcast isn't serving your business, it's just another thing on your to do list. And I don't know about you, but I don't have time for that. So ask yourself these questions if you want to start a successful podcast. What problem does your business solve? Who is your ideal client? What is your listener's desired outcome? And what do you want your podcast listener to do after each episode? Being clear on these answers is way more important than the mic or any AI editing software you use. And I hope that's just the tip you need. Ready to launch a podcast that works? Podcast Episode Summary: "Want to Start a Podcast? Here’s What You Actually Need to Succeed"
Episode Details:
In Episode 231 of Just One Tip from Your Podcast Performance Coach, Tim Wohlberg delivers a concise yet impactful guide for aspiring podcasters. Drawing from his extensive 30-year experience in radio and podcast coaching, Tim emphasizes the critical importance of planning before launching a podcast. This episode serves as a foundational blueprint for business owners aiming to harness the true potential of podcasting to grow their brand authority, generate leads, and convert listeners into customers.
Timestamp [00:01]: Tim begins with a straightforward assertion:
"Don't start a podcast without a plan."
He underscores that many individuals mistakenly prioritize acquiring podcasting gear, such as microphones, over defining the podcast's purpose and strategy. According to Tim, the microphone quality pales in significance if the podcast lacks a clear objective.
Timestamp [00:45]: Tim outlines the first essential step:
"If your podcast is a marketing tool for your business, it won't work if you're not clear about your business."
He urges podcasters to introspect and answer critical questions:
Tim emphasizes that clarity in these areas is foundational. Without a well-defined purpose, the podcast cannot effectively guide listeners toward desired actions, rendering the effort futile.
Timestamp [02:00]: The second step focuses on alignment:
"Your podcast needs to be an extension of your brand, not just a fun side project."
Tim advises that the podcast's name, branding, and content should seamlessly reflect the business’s identity and expertise. This alignment ensures that the podcast attracts the right audience and supports the business's overarching goals. He warns against creating disjointed content that, while engaging, fails to connect with the business objectives, leading to high effort with no return on investment (ROI).
Timestamp [03:10]: Tim introduces the concept of assigning a specific "job" to the podcast:
"Where does your podcast fit in your business?"
He explains that every podcast should have a defined role within the marketing and sales funnel, such as:
Without a clear strategy, the podcast becomes merely a routine task without contributing to business growth, often resulting in burnout for the podcaster.
Timestamp [04:15]: Addressing a common misconception, Tim states:
"Downloads don't pay the bills."
He clarifies that while having a large audience is beneficial, the true measure of a podcast's success lies in its ability to drive tangible business results like leads and sales. Focusing solely on download numbers can be misleading, as high listenership does not automatically translate to business growth. Instead, podcasters should prioritize strategies that ensure their efforts yield a positive return on investment.
Tim challenges the widespread belief that a high number of downloads equates to success. He asserts that without aligning the podcast with business objectives and ensuring it serves a strategic purpose, impressive download figures offer little value.
To encapsulate his guidance, Tim reiterates the critical questions every aspiring podcaster should answer:
He emphasizes that clarity in these areas surpasses the importance of having advanced podcasting equipment or sophisticated editing software.
Tim concludes by offering his expertise to listeners ready to launch or optimize their podcasts. He promotes his coaching services, including:
