Hello and welcome to this episode of Kennedy Saves the World. You're like, Kennedy. Why do you have such a big fan? It's Sip Shanae. Sip. Sip Shanae. Kavita. Shanae is with me, and she is the founder of Sip Shanae. She has brought two wines for this happy hour. Kavita, welcome to Kennedy Saves the World.
B
Thank you for having me.
A
Now, Kavita Day saves the World.
B
Ooh, I love that.
A
That's right. Today and today only. O t o t o. One time. One time only. So please tell me about your beautiful Blanc and your. Because these are two family owned vineyards where you have curated the perfect wine. I'm told that it is fantastic and wonderful. I've not yet tried it, but I'm ready to top you up.
B
Well, do you like clean wine?
A
I do, very much. Does that mean there's no sulfites?
B
There's low sulfites.
A
That's great.
B
Low sulfite, clean enough sugar. There's 0.3 grams per glass.
A
Okay.
B
I want to ask you which one you like to try.
A
Rose. I'm not a huge fan of white.
B
Okay.
A
Do you want me to sip the
B
white first and then I want you to try the white first.
A
Let's try the white.
B
Okay.
A
Here we go.
B
I'm gonna teach you something. When you pour wine, this is called a pun.
A
Okay.
B
And it helps like, you know, when
A
you pour, balance you. Okay.
B
It just helps like you hold your hand when you pour.
A
Okay.
B
That's okay. I'll have the white and you can have the rose. This is Cipchenay Blanc. It's amazing. It's Semillon Uni Blanc and roll. Traditional French fries.
A
Oh, I actually like that. I don't like white wine, and I do like that. And I would tell you I don't
B
really like any direct, and I like.
A
Did you say ume?
B
This is Semillon Uni Blanc and roll.
A
Okay.
B
And this, to me, is just such an easy. It's like water almost.
A
It almost tastes like sake.
B
I know. I love it. Is it because I just ate dark sake?
A
I do. I love it.
B
Me too.
A
I'm a fan.
B
Okay.
A
When I want to go to Japan, I'm obsessed.
B
I've never been to Japan, and I go to have sushi just to have cold sake more than the sushi. It's so good.
A
That is so yummy. Okay, let's try the rose.
B
Let's try the. Okay. This is traditional French grapes.
A
Okay.
B
Grenache, sensade. More verre again. Oh, let's put a little more. It's five o' clock somewhere. But it is really five o'. Clock.
A
Absolutely Right. Cheers to five o' clock somewhere.
B
Cheers.
A
We see you. Cheers to you and your. Your gorgeous wines.
B
Thank you.
A
Oh, yeah. I like that better. That's really good.
B
Yeah. So this is perfect because that is,
A
I think, the smoothest rose I've ever had.
B
Thank you.
A
Yeah. That is perfect pair that. I want to rub it on my skin.
B
Let's do it.
A
Yeah. This tastes like sake. And that's like. If you and I know people are still very much in the moment.
B
Yes.
A
Which I celebrate. And I think Taylor Swift taught us all that you can have an era, which means that something doesn't have to necessarily be a trend in your life. You can look back and see, like, a good swath of time where you really enjoyed something. And I feel like people are still very much in a era, and rightly so. And you don't have to leave that. You can. You can enjoy this. I give you full permission. Full papal permission.
B
It's actually very smart that you're saying that. Right. Because it's in, like, right now, white wine is actually trending more than right now. Everything kind of goes like this, of course, as you know.
A
Yeah.
B
And. But to me is like, it's. It stood the test of time. You can drink it from afternoon to sunset to nighttime. I mean, it's.
A
But it's also versatile, what you compare it with.
B
I know, like, everything, because I feel
A
like white wine is so, like, you know, it has to be chicken breast
B
and shrimp and seafood.
A
Exactly.
B
No, but yammy actually is. I call it white wine in red wine clothing. Or red wine in white wine clothing. Totally, totally the opposite. Because you can have it with steak and beef.
A
That is the best description. Yes. Right. Yes. You can have it with a hearty fish.
B
Yes.
A
You can have it with pork chops.
B
You have.
A
Buy gum. You can have it with your filet.
B
I love it. But I'm a big pizza gal. I even have chicken wings.
A
And that actually sounds perfect.
B
Yeah. And a lot of people that drink our wine.
A
That's a great combination for this.
B
Yeah. And it's funny because a lot of people that drink our wine literally will show us pairings that are like, the weirdest pairings. And I try it, and it tastes fantastic. And because it has no sugar and low sulfites, like, you don't. I can't say you can't get a hangover, but a lot of people report that they feel great the next day.
A
Sulfites are so dumb. Why do they have sulfites in wine in America?
B
You have to. It's preserved. It's like in anything. It preserves it. You have to. It won't last very long without it.
A
I know, but in Europe, like, that. That's why people love drinking wine in Europe, because when you go, you don't feel like a sack of at all.
B
Even with the bread, even with the food, even with anything but. And that's why people don't even know. There's like. So there's more than a dozen of additives that you're legally allowed to put in wine that are so bad for you. And they allow it. Just a lot of things. You need to Google it. There's like 19 of them. Chemicals.
A
Okay.
B
And, you know, round up a lot of things. And it's scary. Like, I used to be a big California wine person, and now I still drink some California wines, but I have to investigate and see, like, what their practices are. So you really. It's kind of like you can't buy an organic apple and then go and order the house wine. I mean, it just doesn't work. You gotta know what you're drinking.
A
Yeah. You gotta be consistent.
B
I know.
A
And people, like, people have more access to nutrition information than they ever have. And I know, like, it's a really, like, the anti alcohol trend is really taking hold, especially with younger people. Like, they, you know, their favorite influencers are like, I don't have sugar or wine. I wake up at five in the morning.
B
Oh, my God, I can't.
A
It's dark. And I gua shaw my body. And then I get 45 minutes in natural sunlight and I don't have carbs. I eat super clean.
B
This is perfect.
A
No alcohol ever, ever. Zero sleep. Like, it's your job. And it's like, you know all this stuff, and at some point it becomes so constraining that life becomes unfun.
B
I know all the people eating the ra. They're like, eating the liver. Like, they just gotta get the liver. This is how my skin looks so pretty.
A
I found a goat on the side of the road, and I just spooned out his pancreas and I ate that. Cause it's clean.
B
There is somebody with that, by the way. Yeah.
A
Yeah, totally.
B
I know.
A
I see a lot of that stuff and I get. And sometimes I'm like, yeah, you know, I do want to eat more vegetables. I do want to eat more lean protein. But I'm sorry, but a glass of clean. I know it kind of, like, softens you a little bit. Especially when life's pointy edges have popped your balloon.
B
That's true. Life's pointy edges definitely have popped our balloons every now and again.
A
How did you get into winemaking? Because you've had an interesting path. Like, you're a Gator.
B
I'm a gator, yeah.
A
Yeah. And I had the Gators going much further in the tournament. And thoughts and prayers, truly. I'm also a UCLA fan, so. But you. You went from that to sports and did a lot of really cool sideline reporting, which is awesome. And that is a very tough job. It's so much harder than people give you credit for because you have, like, 10 seconds to ask the perfect question that has to elicit an amazing response from a meathead. But you went from that to making these incredible wines. How did you make that journey?
B
You know, it's. So I read this quote that said, you know, look, whatever you want to pursue, look at the person at, like, the top position and say, do I want to be that? Do I want to do that? And I was doing sports for so long for Fox Sports. I covered every sport. And some of the sports I literally didn't even. Like, it wasn't, like, it wasn't very knowledgeable about. And I had to learn, like, on the fly, like a corgi race, like hockey, you know, like this one sport called grid. And it was kind of like CrossFit. And so I just looked at, like, who the top person was, and I thought, like, do I want to be doing that? And I thought, no, what am I doing? And at that time, I didn't have any kids, I wasn't married. And I took this trip to Europe, and I was like, oh, my gosh, I want to start a business. And I. I came back not thinking that wine would be the business, but I came back and I ordered wine at all these favorite restaurants of mine, and it didn't taste so good.
A
Yeah.
B
And I thought, let me bring some clean wine.
A
Tastes better in Europe. So I've done that with cheese.
B
Yeah.
A
And then the only place you can get good cheese is, like, a super snobby cheese shop. And it's like, yes, that's $24 for an 8 of a tiny ounce. And you look like garbage, and you'll probably ruin it, but that's the only way. And it's frustrating.
B
Yeah.
A
Because it feels like if it's so abundant there, and I'm not one of these people, like, Europe's better at everything. But there are a couple things where it would be nice if we had that kind of access here.
B
I know. I almost feel like. And I don't want to. You know, this is kind of like my conspiracy mind. I feel like they just give us the crappier grapes and the crappier food.
A
Totally.
B
And they keep. They're like, oh, these silly Americans.
A
Americans are fat and undiscerning.
B
Yeah.
A
They will shove it in their head holes.
B
Oh, my gosh. Disney, you need to hire Kennedy. She'd be great for voiceovers, but you
A
have to pay me in cheese.
B
Yeah, exactly.
A
Okay, so you started sipping the. And you had a procurement company.
B
I did, yeah. It was like a luxury concierge.
A
That's cool.
B
I made a lot of money during that, doing that.
A
It almost sounds a little bit like the Fyre Festival guy, though. No, because the Fyre Festival guy had. Remember, he had, like, the special credit card, and he was like, millennials should sign up for this credit card, and then you'll get nothing.
B
I know. No, it wasn't like that. It was, you know, people. It was weird things, like somebody would want to, you know, chase a tornado or somebody would want to have lunch with Paris Hilton or something. It was just like people that wanted to spend money on crazy things, and then we would do everything we could to make it happen.
A
What was your percentage of success in making weird things happen?
B
Probably, like, over 70.
A
Oh, that's good.
B
Yeah. And if it wasn't a success, it was because it was, like, scheduling. We couldn't make it happen.
A
Okay.
B
You know. Yeah.
A
So that you took that persistence and desire for the finer things, and you came to these family owned vineyards.
B
Yeah.
A
And what did you say?
B
I said, I really want your wine. No, I went to this festival called Pink in Cannes because I was like, I can't. I don't have, like, the money to just go meet every winemaker in the world. So I saw where are they all going to be? And they're all at this festival called Pink. I went there. It was over 300 winemakers, and at the end of it, I had a deal, and I've been working with them ever since.
A
That's amazing.
B
Yeah, it's amazing. Except this year we had, like, tariffs and things, so it's been a little rocky. But we did start a wine club.
A
Oh, okay. So tell me about it. How do people get it?
B
So Sip Sip society is on sipchenay.com and it's, like, amazing because I'm a person. I'm not a chef at all. And in fact, I always do hashtag notashef On Instagram when I cook, because I'm not good, but I just, like, think I can do these Instagram videos of people cooking. Right. But I love to, like, people are out on a Friday night. I'm like, home cooking, and my kids are like, what is that? And I just love to drink the wine and entertain at home. And so we started this wine club so people could kind of bring things back to, like, hey, you know, you can celebrate your house. You can cook, you can have a party, you can have a bottle of wine to gift to a friend when you go to their house. And it's just at home, instead of focusing only on restaurants, you know, on and off premise.
A
Yeah.
B
So which is term for, like, retail and restaurant.
A
Oh.
B
So Sip Society is you get a monthly box every month, whether you pick what you want. You know, we have.
A
Is it more than wine? Do you get other things in there?
B
You can get other things, too. We give, like, recipes, and we're working on some other fun collaborations Serum. Maybe a date with Kennedy.
A
Oh, no.
B
I heard she's engaged.
A
I'm engaged. Oh, my God. Congratulations. Thank you.
B
That's so exciting. I just read that, and I was so. When I was learning about you, I was obsessed with mtv. I always wanted to be on Real World, and I was like, I need to ask Kennedy how she got her job on mtv. Because that. That was, like, the most coveted position ever for anyone that wanted to.
A
I know. It was wild. And everybody wanted to work on tv. So I went through so much of my time there going, like, did this. Has this really happened? Like, four, three years in? Like, is this really my life?
B
Yeah.
A
Like, are they gonna take it away
B
on Top of the World?
A
Because it seemed like I shouldn't have gotten it, but I did.
B
Why did you say that?
A
Oh, because it was like, there's no other time in my life where that would have happened. Like, you. There's no VJ school to go to. They didn't want broadcasters.
B
Yeah.
A
They didn't want people like, slick broadcast voices. Vj.
B
They don't use that term anymore, right? No.
A
Because no one plays videos. There was a video jockey.
B
Video jockey.
A
So radio DJs were disc jockeys and then.
B
Which you also were.
A
Yeah, before. So before mtv, I worked at an alternative radio station.
B
They had a nickname for you.
A
I read the Virgin Kennedy. Untouched, Pure.
B
Oh, my God.
A
Even though I tried to wad it up and throw it at whoever would take it quite some time.
B
Well, now somebody took it. Because you're engaged.
A
That's right.
B
Came Full circle.
A
Yeah, that's right. That's absolutely right.
B
That's amazing. Don't go anywhere more.
A
Kennedy Saves the World right after this. So we're planning a wedding, and it's really fun.
B
And where's that gonna be?
A
It'll be somewhere warm.
B
Warm, okay. Florida.
A
Yeah, probably Florida just can't get enough.
B
I know.
A
So we're in the interior, though.
B
Okay. We're good in the taxes.
A
Where do you live in Florida?
B
Fort Lauderdale.
A
Oh, Fort Lauderdale is great.
B
Yeah. It's amazing. Yeah.
A
I've always had. Is that the.
B
It's in between Palm beach and Miami. So I don't have to be bored and I don't have to be too stimulated. I'm, like, in the middle.
A
No, no, that's. That's great. Like, I'm a fan. My grandmother lived there for a while, and I loved it. Yeah. I would go and visit her. I had a great time. It's Orlando that's in the middle, right?
B
Orlando's in the middle. Orlando's Disney. I go there all the time. I'm obsessed with Disney.
A
Do your kids like Disney?
B
We go every single year. For my daughter's birthday, we go cruises.
A
Okay.
B
We may or may not be on Disney cruise ships. Or wine. I may or may not. I don't know if I'm allowed to say that.
A
Do you hide them there?
B
No.
A
Discovers them like, oh, this looks good.
B
Maybe.
A
Maybe this looks clean. Yeah.
B
So if you want a nice glass of clean rose, you can go aboard the Disney.
A
That's amazing.
B
And sip some.
A
Do you get a discount?
B
Because your wine is not anywhere? Every restaurant I go in, not only do I pay full price, I also have to obviously tip more than 20%. Sometimes I tip, like, 50 or even like a hundred.
A
So they keep. So they keep buying your wine.
B
So anyone wanting to get into the alcohol business, maybe think about the numbers before you get it.
A
How is the margin?
B
The margin's great, but then when you add in all the other things and then you calculate your margin, it might not be that great.
A
It's not as robust as.
B
No.
A
When you start out, you're like, oh, this is amazing.
B
I know.
A
We're gonna be printing money.
B
Oh, my gosh. I remember that. The gentleman that was kind of, like, teaching me about the industry, he was like, I hope you understand this is a rich man's game. And I remember I went home and I was like, he's just trying to discourage me.
A
Yeah. Because I'm a whole woman.
B
Yeah, exactly. And I was just like, no. And when Someone tells me no. I'm like, yes. But he was right.
A
No, some people, he was right. We have to have something to fight against.
B
I know.
A
Like, that is the motivation. That's the best thing that can happen.
B
I know. So, I mean, people try to ask me all the time, I want to start this. I want to start that. I say, you do what you want, what your heart desires. Make sure that you are researching margins, Researching all the things. Don't come back at me angry that you went into this business.
A
Is it a rich man's game?
B
It is.
A
Yeah. How have you succeeded? What's the key?
B
Well, I. First of all, it's just me. I don't have investors, so it's just me. But it's relationships.
A
Like, for me, the longer you can go holding on to it, as it grows.
B
Eight years now, and I've seen a lot of brands that were my competition, like, come and go.
A
Wow.
B
And then I also see other brands that are highly funded and they're killing it. They're flying by. And that's okay because it's like, you know, it's kind of like, you know, it's a wave. Right. And I've been here, and it's fantastic. And I've met so many people around the world. Like, I'm going to the Cannes Film Festival in May. I'm doing a bunch of events with my wine because, you know, the French love clean wine. And so it's just I've met so many people.
A
Have you gone back to the Pink Festival?
B
I have not, but maybe we should go together.
A
Yeah. I feel like you should go like Julia Roberts with your shopping bag.
B
With my shopping bags. With my wine bags.
A
Huge.
B
Huge.
A
Exactly.
B
You are so funny. That's actually great. I feel like I need to do that.
A
Yes, totally. And film a video. And they're like, what?
B
Made mistake.
A
We were encouraging you the whole time. Like, we were never holding you back. Julia.
B
No. You know what? I would love to do that to some of the restaurants that didn't take our wine.
A
Yeah. And now be like, oh, my God. Did you try this? Isn't it amazing? Like, yes. Can we buy it from you now? Like, nope.
B
I know, I know. That's why I'm trying to do this direct to consumer model, because I feel like I want to be able to have access more with our customers because I spend so much time. Our team spends so much time, you know, cultivating those relationships with restaurants and retailers, which we're still doing. But I want to, like, connect with my people.
A
Yes. And how many bottles do they get a month? Who?
B
Oh, the subscription. Okay, so in our wine club, you can get, like, three. You can get six. You can get 12. So three, six, 12. And then we're thinking of doing a four pack, but you can get two and two.
A
Oh, that's nice.
B
It's just so easy, because who wants to go to the liquor store number one or the wine store?
A
But to have that. I mean, it's great, first of all, to have a bottle of wine in the fridge.
B
Clean wine. It. Yeah, yeah.
A
But also, if you're going to a baby shower or bridal shower or a funeral.
B
Correct.
A
Yeah.
B
And me being a wine brand owner, every time I do have to give a gift, I'm always like. And I'm a mom, a single mom, so I'm always, like, forgetting all over the place, like, you know, whatever. And I'm just always like, wine, grab the wine. Look at this cute little bag. Do you think. Put the two little bottles in there.
A
Do you think you get invited to places because people like, well, if we invite Kavita, you know, she might bring the real secret. Oh, my God.
B
Actually, you want to hear a funny story? Okay, so I. And by the way, I don't. Everyone, you can be whatever party you are. This has nothing to do with parties. I support everybody. So the other day, a friend of mine messaged me, and she says, hey, we're doing this RFK junior Event at this venue at this home, and it's just like 30 to 50 people, and I want you to come. And I was like, oh, that's nice. And that was actually yesterday, and ended up making it there, because I'm here, but. And I was like, oh, that's nice. And then she said, oh, and can you bring your wine set up and your wine? Which. I love her. She's a good friend of mine. But I was like, oh. I got excited for a second thinking it was me, and then I was like, oh, yeah, it's the wine.
A
Yeah. And he would love it. And his minions would love it because it's clean and there's no pesticides. Correct.
B
But a lot of people didn't drink at that event, by the way. So we. We set aside two cases, and I think we only went through one.
A
Oh.
B
So they were just discussing, like, the hospitals now are getting healthier food because they were feeding people jello and, like, things full of sugar before, which we all know. Yeah.
A
I mean, it's the little things you look forward to.
B
I know, but I was like, listen, guys, I'VE got Kennedy. And that's who I'm committed to. That is who I'm going to see. That is my priority. And I got on a plane, scared to fly, Came here, turbulence, got off that plane and said, I am going to see Kennedy.
A
And cheers to that, madam. Okay, no more rose from mommy.
B
Oh, yes, please.
A
Get it, girl. So good. Sip cheney. C h a n n e with a little accent. Ague.
B
I love that you knew the word for that.
A
And just stay amazing.
B
Thank you.
A
You too. This is so good.
B
I love you.
A
For a non believer in white wine, I cannot believe how good that tastes.
B
Thank you so much.
A
But if got in my head, I would take the all day.
B
Well, guess what? You get to go home with it.
A
Oh, my gosh. Stop it right now. It's just giving me the vapors.
B
It's already open. I mean, what am I gonna do with it?
A
Exactly, right? It's already open. We're not wasteful here. We're clean drinkers, not heathens. All right, this has been Kennedy saves the world. Go sip your chaine along with Kavita. I'm kenned.
