Hello and welcome to this episode of Kennedy Saves the World. So, as you know, we spend a lot of time in our house talking about college, talking about where to go to college, where, what to do when you're done with college. What's a good major for potential careers that might be lucrative and fruitful for years and years to come? Arizona State is getting a little bit of heat because they are offering a four year degree in content creation. So, you know, aspiring fear the fork sun devils can go out there and make careers that revolve solely around them. If you can become a content creator and you can make that easy money, good for you. It is what people are consumed by, it's what they are inspired, inspired by. But obviously this is a profession that is very, very dynamic and ways to make money as a content creator changes over time. So if you are spending at Arizona state, it's around $40,000 a year all in to go there from out of state. That's the tuition, room and board. And you know, that's pretty comparable with other public schools and their out of state tuition. But that's $160,000 for a four year degree that you could essentially learn through AI on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram. There are plenty of people out there who are more than willing to show you for free how to become a content creator. And if you're smart and self motivated, all you have to do is look at what they are doing and you know, put what they're doing into some of the AI models and start asking it questions. You could probably have a very rich, well curated content creation curriculum in, I don't know, week, two weeks tops. And you would have essentially everything that ASU is going to teach you for free. So if that's what you want to do and you want to make money, then get started early, get started when you're 18, because your skin's going to look better at 18 probably than it will at 22 when you're done with college. So why not get a jump on your peers? If you are a motivated capitalist, college is essentially a waste of time. You know, it's a waste of time. If you really want to get out there, if you have great ideas, if you are the great idea, then college is only going to hold you back. You know, there are millions of people in college, you know, being among them, that doesn't make you interesting, it makes you ordinary. So there are so many reasons, you know, there, there are plenty of reasons not to go to college. There are reasons to go to college. If you want to study and learn from academics who are experts in their various fields, college is great. If you have an area of study that particularly inspires you, then yes, college can be very, very beneficial. If you want to have a career that requires an undergraduate degree. So then you can go on to law school or medical school or grad school that will, you know, lead to a concrete, objective career that will last for a long time and make you money. Yes. Then, then college is your place. I've told my daughters if they don't want to go to college, they don't have to go to college. But they have to do something, they have to have a plan, they have to make their own money and you know, for, for them and their individual choices, they are making those choices on their own terms. And as a family, we do a constant cost benefit benefit analysis. Anyone who is paying for college, the benefits are quite low, the cost is quite high. Therefore, you know, for all the reasons I've laid out, it's probably best to put off college for a while if you really want to be a content creator and if you think you're going to be good at it. There was a very interesting study lately that shows that corporations are less likely to to invest in well known content creators and they're more likely to put money in creators with much smaller audiences. So someone with 5 million followers used to be the ones getting all of the corporate accounts in love and now, you know, the Wall Street Journal pointed out that it's people creators with 5,000 followers and they're the ones who were seeing a lot more action and 20% of the marketplace versus 5% two years ago. So you don't need a massive following to make money. Don't go anywhere more. Kennedy saves the world right after this.

If you want to study something that will be beneficial in the future, then you know, get a broad degree in marketing or business or finance or economics. Don't get something so narrow as content creation because then if it doesn't work out for you as a content creator, what are you left with? Outdated curricula and you have to go to potential employers and say, I spent four years Studying something that only helps me. And you know, if I'm an employer and I'm looking at your resume, I'm going to ask like, well, how does this help my business? Because all you were doing is trying to figure out how to fan the flames of your burgeoning career as opposed to learning how to create, I don't know, a pitch deck and marketing ideas that could help help a company expand and grow. So it is very self serving and self defeating all at the same time. I don't think it's a dumb idea. If there are ways for you to make money, it is much better to make money sooner rather than later. And you know, all you have to do is follow someone like Dave Ramsey to figure that out. If you can make a bunch of money with no student debt between 18 and 22 and put that money away, you have created a nest egg for yourself, for your future, for your retirement. And you will not lay awake at night like so many other people who have a ton of student debt, almost nothing to show for it, and very few job prospects. They are the ones who have to service that debt for years and years to come and they sacrifice that that time. Not building a nest egg. But if you can do that between 18 and 22, if you're hot, creative, smart, if you're a hustler, then do not waste your time in college. It's very interesting because I know this is getting a lot of attention. I also don't think ASU is a bad school. I know it has a reputation for being a party school, but you know, college is filled with party schools. But this is a place, you know, they've got some, They've got the McCain School of Government and the, the Cronkite School of Journalism and they do have some really good programs. So if you want to be a public policy person, go to the McCain School. If you want to be a journalist, go to the Cronkite School. Because a broader major in an education like that is a much better tool to be recognized and get jobs in the future than something as narrow and self serving as, as content creation. If it is all about you, then figure it out on your own. It is not hard to do. It is easier than ever. And if you think you have the tools, then you are just wasting time, withering away, taking your prime and squandering it in college. If you can really go out there and make more money and if you can make money, save your parents money, you know, save money on all that interest that you would Waste borrowing money for an education that will essentially be useless and obsolete in five or 10 years. Because if you can do it on your own, go ahead and do it. Because at the same time you're creating content, you can also read books, you can travel, you can meet people, you can cultivate adventures. And not just pictures, and not just, you know, the basis for some cute posts, but actually you can bolster your own soul and your own story. And then, you know, on the other side of 22, when you get into your mid and late 20s and if you think that something's missing, then you can go to college. You know, it's what I did. And I always talk about the people. I was so profoundly moved when I spent two years at Santa Monica College before I went to ucla and, and I took classes throughout the entire year. In the summer, in the winter, at night. And I remember meeting single moms who were taking night classes in order to get their degrees so they could get better jobs, so they could give their kids a better life. And I would look around and be like, it is possible. Do you have to work your ass off? Yes. But it might be better to do that when you already have a stable career and a stable nest egg that you really gathered for yourself in your late teens and early twenties. Because for a lot of people like that, college is a waste of time. If you are one of those people who is self motivated and shot out of a cannon, then figure it out. Because you know the, the price of failure is pretty low if you're just getting scrappy and dirty and, and making your own mistakes. But if you're wasting a bunch of time and then, you know, have nothing to show for it but a narrow degree that makes you less employable, that is the most expensive choice of all. Episode: Influencer University? Inside Arizona State's New Degree
Date: July 28, 2026
Host: Kennedy (FOX News Podcasts)
This episode explores Arizona State University's (ASU) new four-year degree in content creation, sparking a debate about the value and practicality of college in the influencer age. Host Kennedy offers a candid, humorous, and critical take on whether higher education is the right path for aspiring content creators or if there are better, faster, and more economical routes to success.
Kennedy explains ASU is facing criticism for launching a four-year degree focused solely on content creation.
Points out the high cost ($40,000/year for out-of-state students, totaling $160,000 over four years).
Questions whether this education is necessary, given that similar knowledge is readily available for free online.
Quote:
“That’s $160,000 for a four year degree that you could essentially learn through AI on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram.”
— Kennedy [00:58]
Argues that a motivated, self-driven individual can learn content creation independently, often in much less time than a college degree.
Suggests that starting a content creation career at 18 may be more advantageous, especially since youth is valued in this industry.
Quote:
“If you are a motivated capitalist, college is essentially a waste of time…there are so many reasons, you know, there, there are plenty of reasons not to go to college.”
— Kennedy [02:08]
Corporations now prefer partnering with “micro-influencers” (creators with small but engaged audiences), rather than those with huge follower counts.
Creators with around 5,000 followers are now seeing more business opportunities than before.
Quote:
“Someone with 5 million followers used to be the ones getting all of the corporate accounts…and now…it's people creators with 5,000 followers…they’re the ones who are seeing a lot more action and 20% of the marketplace versus 5% two years ago.”
— Kennedy [04:11]
Recommends studying broader fields (marketing, business, finance, economics) instead of a narrow content creation degree.
Raises concerns about employability if content creation doesn’t work out.
Quote:
“If it doesn’t work out for you as a content creator, what are you left with? Outdated curricula and you have to go to potential employers and say, I spent four years studying something that only helps me.” — Kennedy [05:30]
Kennedy argues it’s better to start making money early and avoid student debt.
References financial advisor Dave Ramsey’s advice.
Suggests that building a “nest egg” between 18-22 beats racking up debt with a narrow, possibly obsolete degree.
Quote:
“If you can make a bunch of money with no student debt between 18 and 22 and put that money away, you have created a nest egg for yourself, for your future, for your retirement.” — Kennedy [06:03]
Shares her own educational journey: attended community college before transferring to UCLA, highlighting the value and determination of non-traditional students (e.g., single moms attending night classes).
Advocates for gaining real-world experience early, and only pursuing college later if needed.
Quote:
“It might be better to do that when you already have a stable career and a stable nest egg…because for a lot of people like that, college is a waste of time.” — Kennedy [09:33]
Encourages listeners to forge their own paths, make mistakes early, and seek fulfillment outside traditional routes.
Urges against “squandering your prime” if you’re capable and motivated:
Quote:
“Go forth, create the content and save the world on your own terms.” — Kennedy [11:17]
Kennedy’s episode takes a critical yet humorous look at ASU’s influencer degree, questioning the wisdom of spending significant resources on a rapidly evolving field that rewards innovation over credentials. She champions self-motivation, real-world learning, and financial independence, advocating for broader educational pursuits or independent learning for those set on becoming content creators. Her personal anecdotes and market insights support her argument that the “influencer university” path may not be the best investment for most, and that success lies in seizing opportunities early and on one’s own terms.
