Hello and welcome to this episode of Kennedy Saves the World. This is the time of year when you want to start looking good and shedding the, the January fatress that you've been sleeping on. And it's fine. There is no judgment. I just want you to be happy. And that means that you have to be happy first and foremost with a functioning body. And a body functions best when it's challenged and when it has goals. So I read a lot of stuff about fitness and nutrition. I am by no means an expert because I love to eat and I have a sweet tooth. So I will never ever be stick thin and, and I am absolutely fine with that. I would always like to be faster though. I would always like to be fitter because not only do I want to be in good shape now, now that I'm in my 50s and I'm looking forward, I want to be in good shape for a long time. So I don't just live a long time. So I live a full and wonderful life. And for me that means eating as well as I can and having year round fitness. So I'm going to tell a slight personal story. I did a half ironman in December in Palm Springs, Indian Wells. It was a super fun race because I wasn't chained to my watch. So my big race was supposed to be in June, which was Eagle man in Delaware. I injured my quad and my piriformis, which if you do extensive running and long workouts, things are going to break down and you have to listen to your body. The most important thing, whenever you start training, whether it's a run, if you're swimming or biking, if you're doing triathlon or whatever it is your particular brand of fitness is. One coach taught me something invaluable which I try and incorporate every single training session. And that is you have to start off very, very slow and assess your body. You have to.

And I get in the pool with.
Kennedy
People and you know, I definitely start off really slow, slowing down my stroke count, trying to be as deliberate as possible. I start off with drills and people get in the water and I don't know if they think that there are hidden cameras and the only way they can win the pool is if they jump in and just start sprinting. And I can't think of a dumber way to warm up your lungs and your heart and, and your muscles and your tendons and everything else, or a faster way to get injured than to just. It's like, you know, pulling up to a track and just starting to sprint. It's like you have to walk, you have to assess, you have to feel where your injuries are. So I could feel this injury kind of bubbling. It slowed me down. Then I got bronchitis and that was horrible. And then I couldn't train. So it took out about a month.

So I knew that I wasn't going to be ready for the race. And so I emailed the race director and I asked because Ironman is obviously a huge institution and they have races 70.3, which is the distance that I do, and full Ironman races around the world that charge tons of money. So you know, it's like they're fine. So I emailed and politely asked if.
Guest or Co-host
I could defer until next year and.
Kennedy
They said no, that there's a 90 day cutoff time. Well, guess what? Most people get injured within less than 90 days of the race. So don't be about it. You know, it's like I'm not saying.
Guest or Co-host
Like I'm never gonna do triathlon again, Eagle man and suck it.
Kennedy
No.
Guest or Co-host
I was like, hey, I'm injured, my quad hurts, I'm having nerve issues because I've got something pinched in my low back and hip and it hurts to run, therefore I can't properly train. It's better for me to defer. And they said no. So guess what, Eagle Man, I'm never going to do your race again. It's stupid. The bike is too hot. And when I did it a couple of years ago, you were poorly staffed. So the people whose races take them longer than six hours, you didn't have enough stuff on the course. So obviously you guys are heartless and cruel and I'm not going to do your race. I'm going to do Savannah at the end of September because that sounds like a much more a much funner race to do. I have a bike bag now. Have bike bag, will travel. I loaded up my bike bag and went to Italy last year for that race in Emilio, Romania, which was absolutely beautiful and incredible and wonderful and well staffed and the people there, the Italians that were cheering were so enthusiastic and I would do that race again even though the bike had a massive hill.
Kennedy
In the middle that they didn't advertise.
Guest or Co-host
They said the bike was flat.
Kennedy
It.
Guest or Co-host
It was not. I'm not doing Eagle man again. I'm not doing it just because I can drive there. Not reason enough. That's why I have my bike bag. So I'm going to Savannah.
Kennedy
Savannah, don't disappoint me.

Give me a good Race. Let me high five you. Make sure you have electrolyte for me on the course because yes, I am going to be six hours plus, but hopefully faster because now I have two and a half more months to train and it gives me something more realistic to look forward to. If you are not ready for a race, don't race. It's not worth it. Do not get injured. I did that In September of 2022, a couple days after my 50th birthday and I tore the labrum in my hip, had to have surgery and, you know, was out of triathlon for almost two years. And that was, I'm not going to say it's heartbreaking, but it was definitely hard and it was preventable if I had listened to my body when I was training. But I was just trying to push through because I had a big birthday and I wanted to prove to myself that I was just as fast. Well, guess what makes you slower than anything? Getting injured when you push yourself too hard and you don't listen to your body.

So the other side of listening to your body is you have to make sure you are always fit so you can take on new activities. And if you have a friend who's like, I have a class pass, come do Pilates with me, you are not going to hurt yourself because you are flexible. You do mobility exercises, you stretch, you lift weights and all of that is available to you. Like go on Instagram and just go on Instagram and search for fitness, mobility, stretching, sexy booty. Like, you're going to get a couple different things if you look for sexy booty. So maybe not do that one. Maybe look for like glute exercises and be a little bit more medical. Otherwise you're going to get like gaping buttholes. Okay? And I've warned you, and this is not about your pornography. This is about you being sexy as hell and honoring the body that you have and the tools that you have and expanding them. So it's not just about body positivity and accepting where you are. Why would you do that? In any aspect of your life, you should always be pushing yourself. You should always be trying to get faster or lift more weights or be more focused in A class, because all of these different things and they have their own value. And you have to honor them by doing the very best you can, whatever the context you are in. And there are a lot of people say, I don't like running, that's fine. If you are a natural runner, go run. I can think of nothing more natural for the human body than running.
Kennedy
It's hard to start at first.
Guest or Co-host
You have to start slow. You have to start with short distances, with the run walk, and only add 10% a week in both distance and speed. Other than that, you. You'll get shin splints which suck and they hurt and they're really hard to recover from. But you can start with that.
Kennedy
You. Hell, you could do push ups, planks and sit ups, you know, ab workouts and. And be fine. And that could be your fitness. And you will be in phenomenal shape. There are people, there's this big argument right now raging between Pilates and lifting heavy weights. Because the people who lift heavy weights, and I'm talking about the women, I'm not talking about bulky dudes with massive delts and pecs, this is for women. Because you lose so much muscle mass after a certain age. And anyone will tell you in order to prevent muscle loss, you have to lift heavy weights. I have added that into my routine for the first time in years. And guess what? It becomes really fun after a while. And then you can challenge yourself with new exercises and push yourself measurably every time you go to the gym. I. I also love Pilates. I think if you only do Pilates, you will be fine. You know, as long as you can get your heart rate up and you're running a calorie deficit, your body will.

Be flexible and strong and beautiful.
Kennedy
And if that is enough for you, then do that. I am a person. Like, maybe I have fitness add. Maybe that's why I like triathlon so much, because I rarely do the same thing two days in a row. And if I don't do things two days in a row, maybe you heard the podcast that I did with my triathlon coach, Leanda Cave.

There's a reason for it.
Kennedy
There's a science behind it. And if you are struggling, then talk to someone, pay someone who knows what they're doing to help you achieve your fitness goals. There are ways you can do it. No matter what you make, no matter how much money you have, there are always ways of improving yourself in a healthy way. Because guess what? When you feel good about your fitness, when you feel good about your body, you will feel good about other areas of your life and you will also when you work out, you will sleep better. And I am convinced that good sleep is the foundation to a good life. I know this because when I have insomnia, when I am up at night with worry, it affects every other area of my life. So I do whatever I can to set myself up so I can sleep well, work out hard and love you as much as I possibly can, which is so much. This has been Kennedy Save the World. Go get sexy. I'm Kennedy.
