Hello and welcome to this episode of Kennedy Saves the World. I would say that traveling is a little bit of an obsession. Sometimes it's for work. Sometimes it is just to go to far off places and discover parts of the world that I had only dreamed about. And wherever I go, I try and pack expertly. As I've said many times before. Up in the Air with George Clooney, that movie. Even though George Clooney is a communist, his packing montage is one of the greatest things ever. And it is such a wonderful example of how you need to refine what you take with you. And I am obsessed with travel experts and packing experts and cubes and rolling and fitting things into bags that will take me on a good sized journey with only carry on luggage. That is very important to me. And I am joined by a travel expert. She is a writer. She was born in Italy. She's lived in Brooklyn for the last 20 years. Laura Giromini, welcome to Kennedy Saves the World.
A
And you say my name right? Giromini. Wow. Are you Italian?
B
No.
A
You nailed it.
B
I love the Italian language very much. And you have a company called Vivere.
A
Yes.
B
Which is the Italian verb. To live.
A
Amazing.
B
Yes.
A
And to live something means to get the best out of it. That's why Vivere New York.
B
Wonderful.
A
Get the best experience out of the city.
B
Okay. And a lot of people are going to fly to New York. People are flying to different places. So tell me about your packing tips. What are people doing wrong and what are like three to five things that will make my life easier? Even though I love it, I know I can always improve. I know I can. I love systems.
A
Perfect.
B
Give me your knowledge.
A
So I'm OCD about packing. My community calls me packing queen.
B
Nice.
A
And I have few secrets. So number one, what you're bringing, do not carry too much. Now, I don't know if you noticed a new trend. The Sudoku trend.
B
Yes. So that is basically like you bring three pairs of pants, three shirts and three like blazers or sweaters. Perfect. That can be combined in a multitude of ways. Correct.
A
So each different thing can be layer top.
B
Yes.
A
And then you move the row a little bit to the side so it's layer, top, bottom and then you move it one side.
B
So each thing can go with each other thing in a number of combinations which I love.
A
I love that. And you need it. But you can also do it like the way I do it. I just toss everything I'm inspired by on my bed and I make different combination on my bed because I'm visual that way. And I want to bring much more than the sudoku thing. So for me the most important thing is to find a way to carry everything with you. And I'm a carry on backpack for 20 years.
B
Amen.
A
I traveled last year to Italy, Maldives and Italy again mountain city. As a creator I work with tourism board so I had to as a photographer brought all my stuff and I had that into a carry on and a backpack for seven weeks. Holy cow.
B
Well done. I'm applauding. So do you just rely on there potentially being laundry services or.
A
Worst case scenario, I just do it myself. But everywhere I've been, you can just go to a laundromat or have it done somewhere or you have like, most likely you have a washer and dryer.
B
I've. I've washed stuff in the sink before
A
in the cruise I did.
B
And then just air dried.
A
Yes.
B
More than once.
A
Like well, actually. And that's the other thing. On the cruise I wash my underwear,
B
of course, but then not in the coffee maker. Don't ever do that. That's disgusting. And people who do that are worse than the people who put their tiny backpack and coat in the overhead bin. Do not do that. Never wash your underwear in the coffee maker. You are a horrible person. And you will probably be first in line to get hantavirus. Yes. And it's like these tiktokers are like here's a hack. And then it's disgusting. You're vile creatures and you will get germs because you don't care about other people. Microbes and spiders will find you anyhow. So you're washing everything in the sink on the cruise. Okay.
A
Yes. But I always find like I don't care. I rather spend more money in washer and dryer everywhere I am. So on the cruise we did that too. Than having stuff having too much.
B
I can't stand traveling with too much. And I will like my packing starts days before, sometimes weeks before where I'm considering combinations and also things that will roll up and pack. So are you. How do you feel about packing cubes and bags?
A
I love packing cubes. They are my system, they're my hack. And there Are packing cubes and packing cubes. So the right one are the ones that are as tall as the luggage
B
carry on the slim ones. They don't do anything. Correct. They don't help you.
A
And I have a very specific way to fold stuff. So like books. So I fold them and instead of stacking one on top of the other one.
B
Yeah, you stack them vertically.
A
So you can see like this.
B
I stack everything. My sweaters, my underwear, my T shirts, my socks. Everything is stacked vertically.
A
Perfect.
B
But not in a. In my dresser. But I haven't done that packing yet
A
because I. Yeah, I used to roll like I was rolling in 2017. Start packing like this. Like books. 2018 never stopped.
B
Okay.
A
Incredible.
B
Because can you fit more in there when you pack with that system?
A
Because you can basically vacuum from. From the packing cube. I usually zip it. I do my packing most likely the day before, not weeks before. No, no.
B
In my brain.
A
Okay.
B
Okay. Because that way I can throw everything into the suitcase if I need to last minute. Because I know everything I'm taking.
A
And you said this very smart thing. You have your drawer that way. Right. So what I do when I'm in destination, I take out the packing cube and I put it in the closet.
B
Oh, nice.
A
Then you have it. It's like having in your drawer. You do not.
B
It's so much better than trying to live out of your suitcase.
A
So you're done. You leave on your seat. You never pack or unpack every time. And as a travel. Like as a. As a travel creator, maybe I stay like two days, three nights. And then I go to another adventure and I never unpack. I just open. Sometimes I don't even take it out or leave it on a. Like on a surface that's higher. So it's open. It's like a drawer. And I see everything on one side and then on the other side there are. I have to bring tripod lenses, drones, photography shoes.
B
So how do you configure things in a bag to maximize it? In addition to the packing cubes, what are some tricks?
A
Well, it's just Tetris. Like you just use anything just changing the angle. Absolutely.
B
Flipping it this way to see what you can stick on the other side.
A
Like I have the tripod fits exactly in this in a way so that all my other. Anything that's elongated fits that side. And I use like on that side. I also use sweater or jacket or anything to maximize all the space. There's no space left for anything.
B
What about shoes? Same, because I always fly in either High tops, like air force ones or my running shoes. And then everything else. Like, I always take flip flops because I never let my feet touch any surface anywhere. It's disgusting. And that's how you get fungus. And seriously, like, there are. There are germs that abound, and I don't live in fear, but I do try and live smartly. And so I always have flip flops. And sometimes I take, like, glittery flip flops in case they have to double as an evening shoe. Oh. Like the sparkly Haviana. Like, they're fine for the poolside, they're fine for the shower, but also if you have to pair them with a fun dress, like, you can do that. And then I do stick things in my shoes in order to perfect. Okay, you do that as well.
A
I do that, Yes. I stick things and then little bags. I put everything in little bags. Makeup. I also use, like, I say, like a travel size of anything.
B
I travel size everything. Because you don't. I just got travel size ordinary glycolic everything. The liquid ordinary glycolic. And it. I got it on Amazon. It's 3.4 ounces. It's travel safe. And you can use it for everything.
A
Yes. Yeah. Everything gets, like, smaller. Even my makeup. Yeah. Travel size makeup.
B
Me too. It's all in, like, one bag.
A
Yes.
B
And then I have a small palette that I travel with with eyeshadow. I've got. I got a teeny tiny nars blush stick that goes in my toiletry. Then my toiletry bag is just like, that big. And I only take, like, my little Tatcha cream.
A
Totally. But can I say one thing?
B
Yeah.
A
I think you're doing that because you're Virgo like me. I don't know if everybody will do the same thing. We just like.
B
But that's why I love super organized. But, you know, like the. The travel size section at Sephora when you're checking out.
A
Totally.
B
I live for that stuff. So when my girls, like, on my birthday, Christmas, Mother's Day, when they're like, what do you want? I'm. I. I'm like. And my. My daughter got me a travel size soy cleanser from Fresh that I can just stick to my bag and it takes makeup off and your skin feels delightful.
A
Yes. So the other things I always do for my carry on is putting down a foldable backpack.
B
Okay. Oh, inside the carry on.
A
Inside. Addition. Addition to. Because when you get to place. I have an amazing carry on. An amazing carry on and amazing backpack. The backpack is super smart. Super functional. Millions of pockets. I can put.
B
Carry that around with you.
A
Exactly. When you're in the city, you don't want to go out like a tourist. So I bring that for my other camera, gears, or for extra thing. I need computer, everything. But then when I get to location, I have my foldable backpack and a foldable tote bag.
B
Yes. See that I carry. I have a canvas, too. Yeah.
A
So I have one that's, like, small. The one that you can go to the beach with.
B
Exactly.
A
But then I have a huge one, which is amazing because it's super light.
B
What brand?
A
It's Rothi. Rothi. I don't know if I'm saying it right.
B
How do you spell it?
A
R, O, T, H, Y. Okay. I'm obsessed.
B
And that's the. That's the thin backpack that folds up, and it's amazing.
A
So they make it out of recycled material from bottles that they found in the ocean.
B
All right, I like that.
A
So you can wash them hundreds of times. And it doesn't. It doesn't.
B
I'm still getting one.
A
Yeah, no, totally. Like, I'm obsessed. Obsessed is nothing to say. Then has a little strap with a hook where I attach my phone. So it's easy to find your phone anywhere. Every time.
B
So they're rothy recyclable.
A
And it's light bag.
B
Washable, light packs, folds. What do you do?
A
And also, I have a inside of, like, I put all this on the other side, not where the two packing cubes are, but on the other side together with shoes. I also put. How is it called? Like, it's basically another small bag that you put inside of any tote bag.
B
Okay.
A
With pockets.
B
Oh, nice.
A
I don't remember the brands, but it's on Amazon. It's super cheap, but has everything stuck. So if you're looking for something, you don't get lost in a bag. You know where everything is because it's like a tote organizer, something like that.
B
Wow.
A
You can find it on, like. I think every brand is the same.
B
Yes.
A
I mean, I feel good with the one I have, but I don't have, like, it's not the best.
B
How do you differentiate what you put in your backpack from your wheel bag?
A
Depending on what I'm using first. So I keep. And for example, I have two, like, shirt tote bag, the easy tote bag. I have one in my backpack and one in my luggage, My carry on. Because sometimes when you're at the airport and you want to buy something, I don't want to carry the plastics, they have to seal it, but I like to put it on my shoulders. Okay, seal it. But I'm not gonna carry it like this. I'm gonna open my tote bag and carry everything with my tote bag.
B
Okay. So I'm gonna start doing that. I'm gonna take smaller. Like, I already have one tote bag. It's a French bulldog, but it's also Frenchie from Greece. So it's like a play on words. It's very cute. So I have that. That I take with me, and then that acts as my purse, and I
A
keep my flip flop inside of my backpack.
B
Me too. Always. I always keep my flip flops in my backpack.
A
Yes.
B
I usually travel with a tablet and not a laptop because it's lighter.
A
Yeah. I cannot live without my.
B
My cord.
A
My computer.
B
Yeah.
A
Like, laptop is everywhere.
B
No, that's. Yes. I know. I probably should travel with my lap. I. I need a new laptop. But it's also six years old.
A
It's also how the bag is made. So the back bag I'm obsessed with has, like. It can be expandable.
B
What brand is that?
A
Knack bag or neck bags? I don't remember if there's the S at the end.
B
Okay.
A
But neck, like K, N, A C, K. Oh, nac. Nac. Sorry, my accent.
B
Oh, that's okay.
A
No, no, no.
B
It's lovely.
A
Knack bag or knack bags? One of the two. I don't remember. It's a medium pack. Expandable. That's favorite. I have two different colors because.
B
Of course.
A
Clearly. And so besides having, like. Yeah, vivare. Besides having, like, hundreds of pockets. But it's so well designed because the back is expandable. So you can put flip flop, a T shirt or even a sweater, like something like that. Or sometimes when I go for a weekender, I expand and I put the two. Two packing cubes there, and I bring everything with me.
B
Oh, inside your backpack. I love that. Okay. Don't go anywhere more. Kennedy saves the world right after this. In my backpack, I have two scarves.
A
Okay.
B
In case I want to wear one around my neck. And then I. If it's cold on the plane and they don't have blankets, I always have a scarf for my legs because my legs. My thighs get cold, and so I always have that. I have neck. Like the relief neck rest.
A
Oh, yeah.
B
So it's a cervical collar, so I support you from the front, and so I have that. And then basically it looks like a bra for. Yeah. Eye shades. And then, like, the second we start taxing I put on the eye shades and the cervical collar, and I am out. Like, there's no waking me up.
A
Yeah. I have a silk. Silk mask.
B
Yeah.
A
Which is, like, my treat.
B
Yes, exactly. But it's very. Like, you have to have little things that are, like, tiny things that give you a sense of, like, luxury and peace and calm. And that's how, for me, travel is. It's something I look forward to same. Because it's like, instead of dreading, like, oh, I'm gonna be stuck on a plane, you think, oh, this is so nice. I get to be on a plane where I'm gonna put little eye masks on and, you know, some sort of special fragrant but not offensive lotion. And, you know, it's like I listen to spa music when I'm falling asleep, and I make it like something. I've conditioned my brain to think of flying as something that's very relaxing. And then I tell myself, no one can bother me on this plane. You know, it's because if you don't want to. If you don't want to get WI Fi, like, you're good to go. Who's going to check? Who's going to be like, I texted you 15 times, like, oh, delta, there we go again. What else am I missing? What do I need? Cause I'm gonna get that knack.
A
Oh, a knack bag.
B
I'm gonna get that in the rathi
A
and the rothy for sure. Any tote bag does.
B
I'm gonna. I'm gonna do more tote bags.
A
Yeah, yeah.
B
But I love, like, I'm telling you, when you get the travel size, everything.
A
Yes.
B
Because that way, in a very small plastic bag, you can take 15 different things that will make you feel like you're at home. So you're not using the hotel lotion and then wondering why your skin looks ashen.
A
Yeah.
B
Yeah.
A
I think you got a plan.
B
Hey, girl. Well, this. I feel, like, alive. And I'm now even looking even more forward to travel than I was 20 minutes ago.
A
Perfect.
B
Yes.
A
Amazing.
B
Where is your longest journey this year? Where will you go?
A
I don't know if it's gonna be the longest. For now, I come out with travel maybe even two weeks before traveling. So I just.
B
You don't even know.
A
I don't even know. Sometimes I don't even know I like it.
B
Are you always ready to go? Like, you have your stuff?
A
Just, like, I've been called to leave the next day. I was ready.
B
Okay.
A
Yeah.
B
When did that happen? Recently?
A
That. Not so recently, but yes. In was August last year. Yeah.
B
Did you go?
A
Bryce Canyon was amazing. Really amazing. Oh, my God. I never been before, and it seems like to be in a different planet.
B
Yeah.
A
And. And also I did, for the first time, glamping.
B
Oh, yeah. Isn't that great?
A
It's amazing. And I'm not a camping person. I never camped. My husband wants to camp.
B
See, I love camping and glamping.
A
I love glamping. I can do it. I'm a little bit. Like my husband says, I'm a princess.
B
That's okay. There's nothing wrong with that. You have to know. You have to know your strengths, and you gotta play your own game. Yeah, my friend told me that, like, years ago, and I've internalized that. Like, play your own game. Don't try and live someone else's ideal, because you'll either fall short or you'll be miserable. So it's like you have to know what you do well and just go ahead and do that.
A
And also, I have another travel hack. I always upgrade to first class or business class every time I can. And that's the only way to do it.
B
I mean, that's one thing about flying a lot, is you get status.
A
Exactly. I get status. I have a lot of.
B
What's your favorite airline?
A
Well, I travel a lot with Delta because I go back to Italy and it's perfect. So I have a good status with Delta, and I always treat myself to that.
B
Are you 360?
A
What is 360?
B
So that's the level above diamond.
A
Oh, no, I'm not even at diamond. Is that diamond? I'm diamond.
B
I just made diamond for next year. Yeah. So I made diamond last year for this year, but I already made it for next year. Yeah.
A
Awesome.
B
And I'm platinum on United.
A
Amazing.
B
Well, either that or too much.
A
Yes, but it's perfect.
B
Yeah, but then you get upgrades, man.
A
Yes.
B
Because it does make a difference. It does not make you a snob if you can figure out a way to upgrade.
A
Yes.
B
And there's so many, like, travel fatty and points guy.
A
Like, totally.
B
So many people who will tell you, like, how to finagle points and where to sign up and where to shift points.
A
Yeah.
B
So I never.
A
I never paid, like, the full price.
B
Never.
A
I always upgrade. And last year, because we were thinking, like, a longest trip, we went to the Maldives, which is amazing. And is it worth it? Amazing. Okay. Yes. I will do it tomorrow. I'm ready to go. I'm packing. Go. And especially we did on Qatar Air Airlines, never travel with Qatar before and we were on the cubes and that was the only first and only time was like, oh, can we not get off? And can we go back and forth another two or three times?
B
Yeah, sometimes. Like, I've never flown one of those, like ultra luxury planes or classes, but I see so many videos about them. I'm like, I want to do that. Like, I want to fly to Singapore.
A
I think you should.
B
I'm a first class on Singapore Airlines just to experience that.
A
Okay. Production. I think this is a plan for
B
the next episode taking us on the road. We really are going to save the world, but only in first class.
A
Yes.
B
All right, Laura, thank you so much for being here. Thank you. We will continue our discussion at some point in the future.
A
Perfect.
B
And compare even more notes. I've learned so much and I am the second. We're done. I'm ordering those two backpacks. This has been Kennedy Saves the World along with Laura Giamini. I'm Kennedy.
