Hello, and welcome to this episode of Kennedy Saves the World. My next guest needs no introduction. She is a force of nature. She is a cultural icon. She is a real housewife. She is the. The last original real housewife of New Jersey. Saint standing. And she never sits. She's always moving. She's cooking. She's competing. And now she's in Fox's Special Forces with her daughter, Teresa G. Welcome to Kennedy Saves the World.
A
Thank you. Thanks for having me.
B
So you and Gia agreed to do this show.
A
Yes.
B
You shot in Morocco with your daughter by your side. That show looks really cool and interesting, but it. It truly is terrifying. Like, they're not screwing around.
A
This is.
B
This is not for the faint of heart. When did you realize when the two of you got on the show that it was real?
A
So, anyway, yeah, I called Kenya and I spoke to Denise, and they said, Teresa, it's really. It's like no joke. It's like. It was like one of the hardest things that they both did. So I was just like, oh, my God. At first they just asked me, but then afterwards they came back and they said, oh, we would love to have you and Gia. So I was just like, oh, my God. So then I'm like, I can't pass this up. It'll be something amazing that, you know, G and I could always. I mean, we're already close, but I'm like, it's something that we'll never forget.
B
Did you have to talk her into it?
A
Talk her into it? Absolutely not. She had to talk me into it. That's great.
B
I love that your family and your daughters are adventurous. So Denise, you know, she was on the show and she's in the middle of a very contentious divorce right now. You know, her. Her soon to be ex husband kind of feels like bad News Bears. And he said in one of the filings that she had an affair with one of the. The special forces instructors. Did you ask Denise about that?
A
No, I did not.
B
Do you think it's true?
A
When I spoke to Denise, that was. That news wasn't even out yet.
B
Oh, and how is she doing when you. When you talk to her?
A
Oh, you know, I mean, she seemed fine to me when I spoke to her, when I asked her about Special Forces.
B
Are you close?
A
No, we're not that close, but I mean, you know, if I call her, she has no problem answering the phone. Vice versa.
B
She was my neighbor in Pacific Palisades, and she was always very nice.
A
Yeah, no, you know, very sweet. I. You know, she's been Nothing but nice to me. I asked her about the show. She's like, if you have any questions, call me.
B
What was her advice?
A
No, definitely take swim lessons because I told I didn't know how to swim. Yeah. So I did.
B
How long did it take for you to learn how to swim?
A
You're not going to believe me. You're going to think I'm exaggerating. I only took one swimming lesson. That's right. Yeah. But, you know, because I was waiting for the weather to get warmer because we just opened our pool, so I only had time for one swimming lesson before actually going out there.
B
Did it help?
A
Yes, it really did. I did it all day and the instructor was amazing. And I, I feel, now I feel comfortable going into the ocean.
B
Really?
A
Like in 20ft of water. Like, if I had to jump off of a yacht, I think I would be fine now. Like, I would know how to mop and I would feel safe.
B
Maybe you can go on below deck.
A
Yeah, I mean, I just don't want to go overboard. I would go on below deck.
B
If you did that, you could save yourself. You wouldn't even have to have one of the. The pursers or stews like, jump in and save you.
A
Yeah. You know, you know how, like every, you know, you go on a yacht and everyone jumps off the yacht and comes into the ocean? I never did that before. I was always terrified to do that. Like last year, we were in Bodrum, Turkey.
B
Yeah.
A
And everybody was jumping off the boat, off the yacht, whatever. And I was like, I was so nervous to do that. I need to.
B
I need to have more of a yacht life. I think that's what I'm gathering from this conversation.
A
Well, go on below deck.
B
I know Captain Sandy. I love Captain Sandy.
A
Yeah. And they look, they want people to go on, you know, to be guests on below deck.
B
I made out with Captain Jason in a bar one night.
A
Nice.
B
Yeah. It was okay.
A
Okay? Why was it okay? Because.
B
I'm not ready to tell this story in public yet. But when you come here in studio and I make you a cocktail for a happy hour, I will tell you the whole Captain Jason story.
A
Okay.
B
All right. This was a few years ago, before his show had premiered, so they shot it, and he didn't know how famous he was going to be, and so he was filled with anxiety. But I want to ask you, because I love Bravo. Obviously, everyone here loves Bravo. We've known you and followed your journey for years. Now, what was more anxiety producing, the hardest part of Special Forces or a real housewives of New Jersey Reunion.
A
Reunion or Special Forces? They're different. I mean, they're different. I would say Special Forces because, you know, Special Forces is physical and mental, and Real Housewives is all mental.
B
That's sometimes physical, isn't it?
A
I mean, not really. It's different. Physical. Yes. I flipped the table. Season one. Yeah.
B
Do you. What do you think about when you go back to that moment? Because obviously, like, in. In this day and age with memes and thumbnails and, you know, just a single second in your life can kind of define you. Do you look back and do you go, I wish I hadn't flipped the table? Or because you've incorporated that act into your professional life and the name of your podcast, do you look back at that, go, I was in the moment.
A
That.
B
That was aces.
A
I mean, listen. Yeah, listen. You can't regret things that you've done, and you can't say, woulda, coulda, shoulda. Like, that was part of my journey, and it happened. And I have to say, everyone loves the table flip. Like, everywhere I go, like, they incorporate at BravoCon. I did it on Dancing with the Stars. I did three football commercials. They all wanted the table flip. You know, I did it. The last one I did was with Dak Prescott and Kyle Richards and Kenya. I don't know if you remember. Remember that super bowl commercial?
B
Super bowl commercial, Exactly.
A
Yeah. So, yeah, so it was fun. Like, so I've done it after that, and, like, in, like, having fun with it. So at least now I do it with a smile on my face.
B
Other than New Jersey, what is your favorite Real Housewives franchise? And do you watch them all?
A
I've been watching. Yeah. Like, I. Because now, you know, haven't been filming, so now I got to catch up on all the other housewives I watched. Yeah, I watched them pretty much all.
B
Yeah.
A
Like, Miami, like, Dubai. They're not on right now, but Dubai, Atlanta, Potomac, Salt Lake City. So, yeah, I watched them all.
B
Do you ever wish that you were on another city's Real Housewives? Like, do you look at Beverly Hills and go, I would. I would destroy your lives, all of you.
A
No, I. I would love to. Like, you know, I mean. Yeah. If I would move there. Yeah. Like, you know, at one point I was like, I want to move to California. But, you know, now do you think.
B
You would do better in Orange county or Beverly Hills?
A
Yeah, I guess. Either or. I think I could fit in it, you know, anywhere. Yeah, I think I like Salt Lake because I'm. Now I've hung Out with Whitney from Salt Lake City. I think she's awesome. Alexia and I are really good friends, so I could see myself in Miami, so I think I could fit in. I've done the ultimate girls trip.
B
Do you think they'll do more girls trips? Because that was problematic.
A
Yeah, I. They. I wish they would go back to that. But why.
B
Why do you think they. They stopped? What is it about that?
A
Well, I'm sure, you know, I think there was an accusation put out there, so.
B
I know.
A
Yeah. That's sad, you know, I know. Because they were fun. They were fun. Like, it was fun getting together with other housewives.
B
What do you think of Real Housewives of New York? Like, what do you think will ultimately happen with that show? I don't know, because people love the legacy participants. You know, it's like, I can't imagine turning on New Jersey and not seeing you.
A
Ah, thank you. I know. I don't know. Like, listen, Bravo, at the end of the day, they're the ones. They do the. You know, they do the surveys. They, you know, they do all these surveys that they ask the fans, like, who they want back. And so I guess, like, they're the experts.
B
Yeah.
A
So, I mean, I don't, you know.
B
What do you know about your future on Real Housewives in New Jersey?
A
I don't know, but you have to ask Bravo.
B
How are you feeling about it?
A
I'm feeling good. Like, I'm just. I'm okay with it. Like, if they want me back, I, you know, I will go back. If they don't, I'm okay with that.
B
Also, does it feel like being in an abusive relationship but being on Housewives, not knowing your future?
A
Oh, no. I mean, you know, I have, thank God, other opportunities. Like, look, right now we're talking about Special Forces. I was able to do that show. So I've been, you know, pretty booked and busy. Like, I did House the Villains. That was the other. The other show that I just did. So, like, I keep, you know, getting booked for things.
B
Did you ever think the first season you signed up that you would have all of these side projects? You know, it's like TV books, other reality shows. You know, this network reality show not even associated with Bravo.
A
Yeah, no, I have, you know, I have six books. Matter of fact, they're all like, this is my podcast room, and I have all my books, like, right there. Look at them. The covers of my books.
B
Oh, that's awesome. Do you have your wedding hair? You have. Do you have your Louis wedding hair up?
A
Not Here, Not. Not in this office. That's in my house. Yeah, but not here.
B
When brides reach out to you for advice on wedding hair, what do you tell them?
A
I'm. They don't really reach out to me for advice. And they, like, you know, maybe they asked whoever, you know, the hair stylist that did my hair.
B
And what would your hair stylist say?
A
She's gotten really busy. Doing my hair. Yes.
B
Are people asking for the Teresa? Because that's when you know you've made it, when your hairstyle has its own name.
A
Yeah. And also Kelly Ripa. Last. Last Halloween, she dressed up like me.
B
I feel like you should be charging her royalties.
A
And then she won an award. Like, I guess they. They did. They asked the fans what was their favorite episode. And then I went into the studio and I had it. They made me dress up like that day. Yeah. And they gave me a trophy. Matter of fact, it might even be in here. Oh, yeah.
B
Show us the trophy. Yeah, do it. Do the 360. Let's see.
A
Oh, I left. It's in. It's in my other. It's in. It's in the office. Sorry, I didn't hear. I got to bring it back down here.
B
So I know that your daughter Gia, in promoting Special Forces, talked about your brother and sister in law, Joe and Melissa, potentially reconciling. And then, you know, Melissa came out and said, no, that that door has been closed.
A
How.
B
How does, how does that make your heart feel?
A
It. Listen, I'm a mom first, so I just always want to set a good example for my children. And the only thing I said was on Jeff Lewis, I. He said, you know, would you, you know, would you reconcile with your brother? And I'm like, never say never. That's all I said. It would have to be on both sides.
B
Absolutely. It would have to be on both sides. What do you think it would take?
A
I don't want to get into that right now. I guess that's, you know, something that, you know, could happen. Like I said, it would have to be on both sides and people.
B
Are you surprised how deeply emotionally invested people are in your family?
A
Well, I've been on TV 18 years. It's a long time. Yeah. And how I say 18 years. I know I was on 14 season, but my daughter, I started. I started working 18 years ago because my daughter just turned 16. She's 16 and she was born season two. So I. Yeah. So then. So I figured out I started 18 years ago. Wow. Like, actually filming my first season.
B
Don't go anywhere more. Kennedy Saves the World right after this. I'm Janice Dean. Join me every Sunday as I focus on stories of hope and people who are truly rays of sunshine in their community and across the world. Listen and follow now@foxnewspodcast.com yes. Is there ever a point where you feel like you've shared too much? Because obviously these shows are successful because in a way, they are invasive, you know, and.
A
Oh, very, very, very invasive. And that's the thing. Like, these fans, like, they know us, but, like, they don't. They don't see our. Our complete life, you know, Meaning, like, there's only an hour in an episode, and they could all, you know, and. And then there's, like, it depends how many women are on the. You know, on that franchise. So they could only fit a certain amount in that hour. So you gotta always remember that. People don't.
B
People don't think that. They think. They think they've got the whole picture.
A
Exactly. So they think that they know you, but. Which, you know, I mean, listen, they know a little bit, but they don't know. Like, it's not 100%.
B
No. What.
A
Thank you.
B
What would you like people to know about you? A side of you that they haven't seen that you feel is who you truly are and something that's very important to you.
A
Listen, I know, like, for. When I first started the show, it was very, like, one way, very old school. Like, I saw things just black and white. But, you know, in life, you know, we all have our journeys. We all, you know, like, for instance, like, we just said, we're both the same age. I thought we were done learning. I mean, I thought, like, at this age, like, we. We know it all, right? We don't know it all. Like, we're still. At this age, we're still. There's still lessons to be learned, and we're. We're still growing. And I'm like, oh, my God, like, really, I still got to learn more lessons. God, you know. Yeah, but that.
B
Okay, but I. I want to. I want to know if this is how you feel, because at 23, truly, I felt like I knew everything. I felt like I had.
A
Yes, Jackie, but you don't.
B
Like, I had everyone figured out. I knew everyone's motivation. I knew what I was capable of. I knew exactly where I wanted to go. And I would have been really disappointed if things didn't turn out the way I wanted them to. But now at 53, I look around and I go, I know almost nothing like, people surprise me every single day, you know, from my own daughters to my co workers, family members, friends. And in some. In some ways, it's great. Like, I love to be surprised. And in other ways, you know, you're like, wow, I didn't think there was room left to be shocked. Do you feel that way?
A
Yes. Like, it's something recently just happened to me that, again, I'm like, really have to just learn another lesson. It's like I'm, you know, I'm like, so I guess in life you're never like, until you die, you're going to always learn lessons.
B
But do you think how smart we're going to be at 106?
A
Yeah, I don't think I'll be living that long, but exactly. So that's the thing. Like, every day is a learning lesson. And just always, you know, take every day, like, and just grow from it. Yeah. Because unfortunately, there's always things to be learned and things to see and. Yeah. You find out new things every day and it's like, yeah, just be open to it. Just be open to it. If you don't close yourself off and say, I know it all. Because you don't know it all.
B
You don't know. I mean, it's like, it's great to feel that way when you're young, and then a few humbling things happen along the way and you're like, whoa, didn't expect that outcome. Okay, here we are. I guess we're starting over.
A
Exactly.
B
Are you surprised how different your girls are from each other?
A
They're all, like, they all have, at the core, they all have the same family values, which I love. And I feel like they're all very strong. They take after their mama. Yeah. So. But they are different. Like, there's, like, two of them that are more reactive. The other two are more quieter. And, you know, it's, you know, they are all different in their own way. Yeah.
B
And it's the beauty of parenting. But also you're like, how could this happen? Like, if you raise kids in the same environment, like, how can they have different temperaments and different reactions to things?
A
Yeah, no, they do. Yeah.
B
Do they see their dad? I know that he is living and working in the Bahamas.
A
Yes, they do see their dad. Yes. That's good.
B
I mean, that's awesome.
A
And I hope one day he comes back to America.
B
Do you guys talk about that?
A
Oh, yes. Like, I hope, you know, it was paperwork. You know, what he, you know, got in trouble for. And, I mean, he was here since he's like one years old. And. And that was the thing. I remember I tried to make him. I remember, like, filling out the paperwork and I was doing. I just didn't know I should have got an attorney back then. Like, I didn't know because then I could have made him an American citizen. But I remember I tried. It was just so difficult, and it's so crazy because both of his parents were American citizens and he just never did it. And I wish that when his parents did it, I wish they would have made him do it, and they just didn't. It was just. I don't understand. But, like, he just never needed to because he had a green card and he was fine.
B
Do you think you would still be together if that clerical error had been fixed?
A
No, no, absolutely not.
B
You never know. I mean, it's like sometimes you look back and like.
A
Oh, maybe that was the thing. But, yeah. No, no. And like, see, that's the. I feel like, unfortunately, something. Things. Sometimes things happen in life we don't.
B
Understand why, especially in the moment.
A
Yeah. Like. And like, for instance, like, I don't know. I'm Catholic. I'm, you know, I'm very religious. I became. Because I have had a lot of darkness around me. And for instance, like, Joe was just abruptly taken out of my life. So sometimes things like that happen. But now looking back, like, look, there was a reason why. And then, you know, I never thought that. Oh, my God. That I was going to fall in love with another guy. And. And I did, you know, and. And Louie's pretty amazing.
B
Do you love him? Is he awesome?
A
He's amazing. Yeah, he's awesome. Like, total different love than Joe. It's so crazy. Like, I thought Joe was the love of my life. It's so different. Like. Yeah, totally different.
B
But then sometimes it takes time to meet your person.
A
Exactly. And it's like, I never thought I'll meet my person at 40. I was 48. Yep. And Louie was 46.
B
How long were you dating before you got married? Two years.
A
We dated a year. A little over a year. Yeah. Because it was a year in July and then we got engaged in October.
B
What's next for you?
A
What's next? I don't know. But, you know, I'm sure. I'm sure something will come up. Yeah. Like, there's always something come up, which I'm grateful for, so. You always gotta be grateful for things in life, you know, which I am.
B
Is there anything you'd like to say to Andy Cohen right now? I'm sure. He consumes this podcast every day.
A
Oh, what do I wanna say to Andy? Well, I love Andy Cohen. I mean, we go way back, so he's awesome. He's like, what? We call him Daddy. Yeah, he's our daddy.
B
He's so weird.
A
Yeah. Now he's awesome. Every time I text him, he always texts me right back. He's. He's a good guy.
B
Do you think he does that with all the housewives? I mean, imagine you were just listing, like, all the new franchises, like Salt Lake City and Dubai. Does he respond to everyone? There's no way.
A
I mean, I can only speak for myself. Like, I don't know. I don't ask the other housewives. But, like, anytime I text him, he always responds.
B
Who's your favorite housewife?
A
My favorite. Oh, my God. I have a lot. Well, I mean, for instance, Miami. My girl's Alexia. And I like. I like. I have to. I like Larsa. I had dinner the other night with Marisol and Julia. I met them, hung out with them for the first time. I had a great time with them. I have my favorites and not my favorites that I know. Yeah. Like in Dubai. I love Chanel and Taline. Those are my girls there in Orange County. Like, I'm not really haven't hung out with the girls from Orange County. I've worked a few times with Shannon Beador. I think she's awesome. And the other day and last week when I was promoting Special Forces, I went to an iHeartradio event and I hung out and I was talking to Heather Dubrow.
B
Oh, yeah, she seems really cool.
A
She was really sweet.
B
I remember her from the 90s because she was in a sitcom with Jenny McCarthy when Jenny and I were on MTV together.
A
Yeah, she was awesome. Who else? Let's do that. Let's go down the line. Oh, New York. I'm friends with Luann. I love Dorinda. Yeah, Luann, Dorinda. Ramona.
B
She's not.
A
Not Ramona. Sorry. Luann, Dorinda and Sonia.
B
Oh, yeah, I like Sonia. Ramona. Scene.
A
I love. Yeah, I love them. Matter of fact, I'm working with Sonia next week in Tampa. Oh, that's cool. And Potomac. What are you doing?
B
What are you guys doing next week in Tampa?
A
We're doing a charity event.
B
Oh, that's sweet.
A
Yeah. And Ashley Darby's gonna be there too, so. And Ashley's my girl from Potomac. Love her. So, like, I have Salt Lake City. I hung out with Whitney for two weeks in Australia this summer. We had, like, the best time Together. So. Yeah. So I have. I have friends everywhere.
B
And. And who. If someone texted you from any Real Housewives, who would you ghost?
A
No one.
B
Come on.
A
I wouldn't go. You know what? See, at this point in your life, do you even want to fight with anyone?
B
No, I. That's why I ghost them. If they're. If someone. If someone were a time or energy suck on my life, I would just not respond to them, and I wouldn't feel bad about it.
A
Well, this is the thing. I'm. I'm at this point in my life that I'm like, It takes more energy to hate someone.
B
Yes.
A
Than to be nice.
B
What about Brandy?
A
It's. I think Brandy's cool. I like Brandi. I've. She's never, you know, she's never bothered me. We. If anything, I've hung out with Brandi, and she's a lot of fun.
B
Do you. Do you still stay in touch with President Trump? You were one of the early adopters who. You were obviously on the Apprentice.
A
Yes, yes, I have the picture in here somewhere. Yes, I was necessarily. I don't stay in touch with him now, but, I mean, you know, I. I do. You know, I'm sure, hopefully he remembers who I am. Yeah.
B
Oh, he remembers, absolutely. Especially people who came out from that era and supported him and, you know, it's like, really put their necks out there, because in 2016, it was not the most popular time to endorse, you know, then candidate Trump. But you did.
A
Yeah, he was awesome. Like, he from. I worked with him on Celebrity Apprentice, and he was a gentleman, so I have nothing bad to say about him.
B
Well, Teresa, I want to thank you for your time. It is so much fun talking to you. I do hope.
A
And he. And also he has a beautiful family.
B
Yes. And that's. That's something that you both have in common.
A
Yes. He has a beautiful family.
B
Your life may be big at times, dramatic, but family is at the center of your lives. And I think that's something that everyone can take away from all of that.
A
Thank you.
B
Yes. Theresa, please come by and I'll make you a cocktail and tell you the Captain Jason story.
A
I would love that. Yeah, I would love that. Okay. Thanks for having me.
