I'm joined today once again by Jerrica.
Greg Miller
Hello. Thanks for having me back.
Jerrica
How you doing?
Greg Miller
Doing good. Trying to play all these video games. I have a list of games that I like still like. What's the fuss about that I need to get to so I can figure out what is my game of the year. Because there's still so many there is on my list that I haven't even touched.
Jerrica
They just keep coming, you know. Last time we talked it was on the eve of. Of Dragon Age. How's your time with Dragon Age been since that?
Greg Miller
Phenomenal. To the point where I'm looking through every turn over every rock, looking at every blade of grass and just seeing if there's some coin there. And then like just with all the side quests are just really, actually really fun to see how they progress. And the main mission stuff, like I can get to it but it's like I want to check every box.
Jerrica
Yeah.
Greg Miller
This has taken me a long time.
Jerrica
Is it? Are you feeling Game of the Year for yourself vibes? Are you not sure yet?
Greg Miller
Absolutely no. It's there. It's there. Despite what others might say, like, I think it deserves a place closer to the top. But having a good time. Love the characters, gameplay is really fun. Didn't expect that from this. As much. As much fun as I'm having.
Jerrica
That's great. I love that. And besides games, last time you were here, you were talking about starting to take games media a little bit more seriously. How's that all been going for you?
Greg Miller
We were talking a little bit before the show. I was like, hey, is it normal to like not play as much as many games when you start doing this? Because like a lot of it's been like, hey, can we stream with our show JK Games. Is it functional? Can people see us? Can people hear us? Are we on all the things when we hit start now.
Jerrica
Chad, can you hear me? Learn is the biggest. Put that on a shirt for real. Well, very proud of you over here.
Greg Miller
True. Yeah. But it's been a lot of fun and I'm eager to see what I do next. Every week I'm like, let's see what happens. Let's see what we make. Yes, just a regular schedule has been a big win.
Jerrica
Well, congratulations. I I am very excited to see you take this to the moon. We're talking about this beautiful piece of Art. But the places Nick goes, I'm not sure you want to go, but if you're a little curious, check it out. YouTube.com kind of funny games, but whatever. Enough about that for now. Let's begin with what is and forever will be the Roper Report. Time for some news. We have six stories today.
Greg Miller
Baker's doesn.
Jerrica
But before that six. I have a story number zero of something that I just saw that I just want to bring up. We don't need to talk too long about it because I'm, I think that next week we're doing our full on Game Awards predictions episode. But Kev, can you bring up the link that I, I put up there? Andy Robinson over at vgc, a man that I trust very, very much says that he is expecting a very big Game Awards next week. Fire up the hype train. And then if you scroll down, Kev, someone replies, is that a guess or a hint? And he said definitely not a guess. Implying he knows some things that are going to be announced slash revealed at the Game Awards and he's willing to hype it up. Which, you know, that's putting a bullet on your back if, if you, if this doesn't come through. Jerika, what do you think about this?
Greg Miller
I mean, it could be a lot of things. And you know, I think this is the first Game Awards in my eyes. I'm like, I can't really predict a specific thing that can show up because I feel like this is an opportunity for so many things to sort of kick off the next year in terms of hype. But you know, all of my friends said that there was, you know, the 30th anniversary PlayStation video. I haven't watched it yet, so I feel like a loser. But everyone's wanting like a bloodborne remake like, you know. Oh yeah, I don't know. Could that show up? Is that the thing? Is that the thing to get everybody hyped? I don't know.
Jerrica
That would be, that's not, that would be. I mean it's possible. It's.
Greg Miller
Would it show up?
Jerrica
I don't know. Unlikely. Yeah, I, I don't, I don't think that now is the time for that. The Game Awards, but that would be nuts.
Greg Miller
It'll be multiple things that maybe this person's hinting at too. Yeah, I don't know if it's one big thing or lots of stuff.
Jerrica
I would hope so. I mean, look, the Game Awards like are all over the place in terms of how hype they can be sometimes they're not that and sometimes they are like there's some and even I feel like every year has at least something that's like a interesting announcement. So yeah, I'm I'm with you that like I feel this year going into it, there's not anything that I'm like, oh, there's a really good chance this thing I'm excited for is going to be there. But right here is my favorite place to be. Not me not expecting much, but other people getting me hyped for expecting a lot. And at the end of the day, we'll see what happens next Thursday when we react live right here on YouTube.com kind of funny games and Twitch TV kind of funny games. But get the story number one Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. The reviews are here. It has a metacritic of 86 and an open critic of 86 as well. Which, let me tell y'all, feels really damn good for you. Boy, cuz I had this on my fantasy critic and it puts me in first place. Will I hold on to it? We are running out of time. I'm pretty sure if I'm understanding this correctly, the only thing standing in my way is Greg Miller with his grasp around Marvel Rivals. A grasp that is contentious, I will say, for how Mike had to drop it and Greg got it. But you know what? I'm not going to be a sore loser, but I'm definitely not going to be a sore winner when I destroy Greg Miller. This is happening. He needs Marvel Rivals to get at least I think a 74, which it's probably going to guess, but we gotta hope. We got a dream everybody. Luke Riley at IGN gave it a 9 out of 10, saying it's an irresistible and immersive global treasure hunt and far and away the best indie story this century. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle doesn't belong in a museum. It belongs on your hard drive where you can play the heck out of it. Catherine Castle at Eurogamer gave it a five out of five. Smart, fun and so very Indiana Jones. The Great Circle is a stealth action tour de force that marks a bold new era for machine games. Richard Waking at Gamespot gave it a 9 out of 10. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle takes an unexpectedly stealthy and free form approach, making for a faithful rip roaring adventure in which you truly embody the famous archaeologist. Daniel Dwyer tweets out. Indiana Jones the Great Circle is my favorite game of 2024 and I'm absolutely shocked by this. The forgotten city with machine game storytelling, sometimes dishonored, often hitman, but Really a whole new blend of first person experience. Uh, and then for Kind of Funny we had our review where Greg gave it a 6.5 out of 10 saying that it is okay and Paris giving it a 7 out of 10 which is good on the kind of funny scale. Jerrica, do you have any interest in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle?
Greg Miller
I'm probably a unique specimen. Like in most cases where I've watched the first movie. Not a huge Die Hard fan obviously. When I think of what Indiana Jones does, I for me personally, and this might sound lame, I just think of Nathan Drake and Uncharted and like how this game could, you know, sort of how is this game going to be something different? And I really think like it what a great move for machine games to be the ones that sort of get this going. Because I think that was a match made in heaven. Like as far as like I've played Wolfenstein too. That was the last game I think they actually put out. Besides like the DLC could be wrong.
Jerrica
Yeah. The whole Wolfenstein line on a recent consoles. Yeah.
Greg Miller
Okay. But yeah like as far as I had a great time playing that. It was a lot of action. I maybe remember like a little too much going on on screen but that's sort of the ride with Wolfenstein. So like I'm excited to get my hands on this one just because like I. I'm always down for a great story and then Troy Baker apparently is killing it.
Jerrica
Oh yeah.
Greg Miller
Like to hear his talent come through with some voice and you know, as far as like I go back and forth about like narrative driven action packed games that are first person versus third. I go back and forth because I tend to like both styles in different situations.
Jerrica
Yeah.
Greg Miller
So I'm curious to hear what do you think that is you're hands on? Like go ahead.
Jerrica
What do you think that is in terms of like what. What type of experiences with that do you like better? First person versus third person? Like what do you think is the determining factor there?
Greg Miller
I guess how the game plays like with the. I've watched some clips that people play in Indiana Jones early and I really am curious because I see a lot of fists going everywhere, a lot of punches and you know, when it comes to third person like it's. It can be a challenge for that kind of combat and even just you know, shooting. But I think about Uncharted and how that felt pretty good. But with this I'm just curious of how it feels because I don't know until I sort of get my hands on if it feels smooth, not chunky or like clunky. I mean, like running around and like picking up stuff. How does that feel? And I'm just like, what do you. In this one? Like, I haven't played, so I'm. I have no idea. But you know. Do you have weapons? I see a whip that during some of the scenes.
Jerrica
Yeah.
Greg Miller
Are you upgrading whip? Are you upgrading your fist?
Jerrica
Yeah, kind of. Yeah. You have. So you have your whip and then you have. There's guns as well, but you can. The game mainly focuses on just picking up a bunch of random things that are in your vicinity and using them as weapons. Like classic video game stuff, specifically indie stuff of like wine bottles or just like broomsticks or whatever's around the room to like kind of stealth around, hit people with, throw it at him, whatever it is. And then, yeah, there's like abilities that you're upgrading throughout the game. But yeah, it. I would say in my limited two and a half hour experience with it, it. It way more focuses on the melee side of combat and I guess the whip as well. But then the. The shooting stuff, while there doesn't seem to be like the bulk of the experience. And talking to Paris and Greg seems like that's throughout the entire game, how. How it kind of goes as well. I'm really happy to see so many people vibing with it. Like, I feel like the. The story from Greg and Paris's review that I highly recommend y'all check out our gamescast yesterday to kind of hear them back up the scores that they gave for it. It really does sound like it hits as an Indiana Jones story. And the performances from Troy and the others is. Are great. And they. They feel authentic. And coming from Paris, who is a big Indiana Jones fan, they kind of nail what he was looking for as somebody that was let down by Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and whatever the most recent one was.
Greg Miller
Yeah, I think I saw someone like, say, like, specifically like, this is a great movie that never came out. Like, and I think that speaks to if you are a fan that like, the story is definitely one you don't want to miss out on.
Jerrica
Yeah. And from a gameplay perspective though, it sounds like Greg was pretty let down for how focused, how much it focuses on stealth, for how not great the stealth was or how he feels like. There's other examples of games that do what this game's trying to do just a lot better. And I think that that's kind of the. The biggest issue is that from even a story perspective. But I think this is where the gameplay kind of lulls for them is the pacing. And Indiana Jones movies are so impeccably paced as an experience that playing through the game, once you get to these open areas, the how open zone they are, kind of feels like it's getting in the way of what's actually good about the game. But again, looking at it, it's like this game is 86 on both meta and open critic. Like that is showing that it's resonating with people. Both indie fans and not both sound like they're really into it. I saw Gene park yesterday talking, saying explicitly he is not an Indiana Jones fan. Like he does not like Indiana Jones, but he's having a pretty good time with this game. So it being on game pass too I think is a huge win. It's a great entry point for people to jump in and see. Maybe it is for them, you know. So I think it's great. But I also think that this is just such a good example of like, hey man, reviews are subjective. Like Greg believes what he's saying. He's not saying stuff to like kick any hornets nest or anything. Like he believes this. And he backed it up with an hour of conversation, as did Paris. And also seven, not a bad score. It's. That's good.
Greg Miller
So yeah, I'm glad the reviews are coming out like they are. It seems, you know, with any kind of like big IP tied to a game, I'm always nervous because it, that name usually has too much responsibility and it doesn't need a lot of help marketing itself. But sometimes like not saying that this is a cash grab, but sometimes that's a little bit like it's a filter I've always had in my brain when I see a certain IP tied to a game experience. But when I learned about like who, you know, who was making this game and what it could be like or how the game's going to be actually when you get in, get in with it. Machine games like, like I said, I think that was a good move. I don't know whoever made that decision, but I think they are the perfect ones to turn this into a fun experience versus just something that has Indiana, Indiana Jones in it.
Jerrica
And I do think the conversation around IP based games is very interesting right now. And I think it's been interesting in different ways and waves over the last 30 years where, you know, license games meant something very negative back in the like PS2 era of games. And if something came out that was a win, that was a huge Surprise. And I feel like even thinking about James Bond, which was probably during the 90s era of games like the Shining Star. Example of, hey look, a popular IP can also be a good video game. Having said that were more bad James Bond games than there were good James Bond games. And Star Wars I think is another similar thing. Like some amazing Star wars games, then just a lot of whatever Star wars games, right? Batman, Arkham kind of changed that in the 360 PS3 generation. From the superhero side for sure. Creating classic games at this point, obviously we see things like Spider man, but then we get things like Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, which I think are two examples of very popular IP coming out at quote unquote the right time with those two brands being in the zeitgeist of mainstream media. But Avengers not kind of hitting the way it has to. Whether it is what you're talking about of give indie the machine games. Like we know what machine gun games can do. Giving an Avengers game to Crystal Dynamics, we know what they can do and what we ended up getting. This game is a service not really being it for the majority of people of what they expected from an Avengers and that leaving a sour taste in their mouth. So that a year later or whatever, when Guardians came out, a game that I love, it's not perfect, it has many flaws, but I love that game. And I feel like people wrote it off because it was an IP game and it felt like, oh, they're just trying to do. They're trying to copy the MCU, they're trying to copy the IP. So Indiana Jones, here we are, 2024. Pretty interesting because the IP has been less relevant than ever in terms of quality because the last two movies decades apart were not well received. So it is interesting that like this generation's understanding of Indiana Jones is the old trilogy being amazing and the ride at Disneyland. And I feel like that's kind of a tough sell. You need people that truly give a crap about this franchise to make it come together. And it sounds like Todd Howard and the team believed in this so much that they were like, we want indie, we are going to do indie. Right? And from a story perspective, it sounds like they really did that. And to a lot of indie fans, it sounds like they did it from a gameplay perspective as well.
Greg Miller
Agreed, well put. But yeah, you know, I, I feel like I felt the same way about Guardians of the Galaxy too. I'm so thankful that I picked it up and started playing because I also had a blast with that game. So hearing everyone's reviews of this. Like, I'm definitely gonna try this. Like, yeah, Game Pass. I'm gonna play this on Monday.
Jerrica
Yeah, I'm very, very interested in the community reception for this game and I'm interested in the stats, how many people buy it, how many people play it on Game Pass. Is this going to move the needle? Because I mean, no bones about it. Looking at these Metacritic scores, this is a win. This is a win for Xbox. This is a win for Game Pass. This is a win for Machine Games. Bethesda, like any way you look at it so far, this seems like it's hitting the way that they would dream of it hitting. Do you think that this is going to be well received by the players?
Greg Miller
I think so. You know, with a few other games moving around and you know, for the holiday, I always, you know, I got so excited, you know, especially when I was back in college, like being off to play games. So this is going to be one of those titles for a lot of people. And it being on Game Pass, I think it's a great time for this game to be available. While there's not a lot of other things. I mean there's lots of games out and I'm still trying to beat Dragon Age. But I think this coming out right now is a really good time and I think a lot of people will play based on just what is available. And you can just download it from Game Pass and not really commit to putting down $70, right?
Jerrica
Yeah. Or you can wait till February and get it on PlayStation. Like I think that this is a very interesting title that I want to keep close eyes on because we haven't yet seen a well reviewed Xbox game come out on Game Pass and then in a very, very close turnaround also come out full price on PlayStation. I wonder with the reviews being high and with the interest, we'll see like what the. The over Christmas break kind of like talk and chatter is of the people playing it on Game Pass or buying on Xbox and then yeah, I'm just, I'm interested to see how this all shakes out, but hopefully it hits the way that they needed to over at Machine Games. We got a couple super chats here. Dear Six says I hope that Jeff makes up for the missed hype fiasco during Summer Game Fest and was able to get a Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer from Square even though that wasn't his fault. I don't know what you're exactly talking about, but like I, I guarantee Jeff would die for a Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer, but that is very out of his control. Like Kingdom Hearts is its own beast. Joey Radstone says indies less uncharted and more deus ex immersive sim. Yeah, seems like it. Alexander Ball says, Sorry in advance. Tim. Greg's so good at getting those W's and the asterisk next to them. Never forget Starfield, Gundog, Gate, justice for Mike. Yeah man, I'm sure Greg's gonna pull some bullshit. That's his whole thing. Story number two Clickolding and I am your Beast developer is making a TMNT strategy game. This comes from Maddie Myers at Polygon Strange Scaffold are unstoppable right now they are just on a dominant run and good for them. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles license is really getting around the video game world these days, having recently resulted in a roguelike with TMNT Splintered Fate 2 beat em ups, TMNT Arcade, Wrath of the Mutants and TMNT Mutants Unleashed and a mysterious upcoming PS5 game called TMNT the Last Ronin that I will not believe is real until I actually play it. What I did not expect to see was a TMNT strategy game from Strange Scaffold, developer of tons of indie favorites here at Polygon and kind of funny from Clickeling to I am your beast to El Paso elsewhere. As the name of TMNT Tactical Takedown implies, it's a turn based strategy game. Yet with the beat em up elements that are a classic part of the TMNT adaptations, how will those two genres, turn based tactics and beat em up brawling combine into one fluid experience? According to the press release, the usual turtle for some of Leo, Raph, Donatello and Michelangelo, all playable, will have their own mini campaign where you wield unique move sets and utilize super moves to turn the tide against opponents in strategic turn based battles. Perfect for quick play sessions that feel meaningful. Ninja Turtles tactical Takedowns Fast paced encounters only take minutes to complete. Eventually players progress towards a dramatic finale in which the Turtles must unite against evil forces. Strange Scaffold is working with Paramount Game Studios on the project. Working with Zir Nelson Jr. And his team at Strange Scaffold has been an incredible experience, Paramount's SVP of games and emerging media, Doug Ro said via the press release. From our first conversation it was clear that Z Vision for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Tactical Takedown would exceed our expectations. And you love to hear it. Our boys al out here wheeling, dealing and making great games. He's making a Turtles game. Jerrica. How awesome is that?
Greg Miller
Cool. It's awesome. Just to have, if I even got the chance to do that. Like, I'm a, you know, I'm not a huge, like, Ninja Turtles, like, video game player. But like, I grew that I grew up and those were my action figures. Like, anytime there's a movie, I'm going to watch it. Just to know, like, I got to make a game with the Ninja Turtles. That'd be really awesome.
Jerrica
Kevin Coel, I gotta take you off the bench here for a second. Me and you, Ninja Turtles, very important to us throughout our lives. Puzzle games, strategy games, Hitman Go type experiences. This looks like a Kevin Coelho joint.
D
I, I'm very excited. I heard about this yesterday, but I didn't get any context of the game, like what kind of game it was. And I was like, oh, that's interesting. And then looking at this, I mean, I can't wait to fall in love with this game.
Jerrica
Yeah, I, I honestly, I feel like you're. This is gonna be your, like 100. Yeah, yeah. Game of the year forever. I can't wait. But real talk though, Zalavir and Strange Scaffold being in charge of this, Like, I feel like otherwise if I saw this trailer, it would be like, all right, cool. But knowing it's them, this is going to be good. This is going to have the sauce that it needs to kind of just take it a level above of not just being, I mean, back to our last conversation, another IP game. There have been like six Ninja Turtle games in the last two years and of varying degrees of quality. And like, I also think Ninja Turtles, that's okay. Like, turtles can have games that are just fine, that are just kind of button mashy, whatever, and like, that's okay. But I like the idea of there potentially being some really deep strategy game games. So we'll see. We got some super chats here. Alex J. Sandoval saying really, really nice to see a developer that is building games in a more sustainable way earn an IP license of this level up there with bos, John Wick and Tron. Hope to see more like this. That is an excellent point. And I do think that it's very, very cool to see these small, smaller developers get access to these huge IP that can kind of just even more so cement their place in the industry. And to see them, I mean, how many games have Strange Scaffold put out in the last couple years? Like, it just feels like every three months they're putting something out and it hits. So it's working. And in an industry right now where nothing is working, it's really, really, really nice to see that. And I. I mean Zalavir and all of them deserve nothing but props for sure.
Greg Miller
I think it's really, really cool. I've had. What was it. I just know the part of the title. I've known his name but like I am your Beast has been on a list on my list for a while. I just keep seeing it show up from time to time. Have they ever have. I don't know if you've played a lot of the games from them, but do they have any other games that are similar to this kind of tactics game? Have they?
Jerrica
That's kind of like this before. The coolest thing about them is like all their games are just radically different experiences.
Greg Miller
That's what, that's what I was thinking. Like looking at some of the titles they put out, like, they all seem very different.
Jerrica
Yeah, I haven't beat any of the games, but I've put a couple hours into both I am your Beast and El Paso Elsewhere. And both of them are. They're phenomenal. It's like they're just fun times. Like I feel like it's a rewarding experience no matter how much you play it. So definitely, definitely check them out. Yeah, I split fiction. That sounds cool. Yeah, I'm definitely intrigued by that. It is just a name.
Greg Miller
I want to know what it is.
Jerrica
Who knows? But like, I mean we won't have to wait to find out because this is a slam dunk guarantee it'll be there at the game Awards. The. We've seen Joseph Fares over there so many times and I, I'm. I mean it Takes Two One game of the year a couple years ago. So yeah, I feel like it's the perfect place to, to formally announce this. But yeah, March 6th release date. I love that as well. Kind of getting 2025 a little bit solidified of like locking in dates. Like that's good to see.
Greg Miller
I agree. I, I feel like, you know, this is a whole other subject but like just, you know, any game coming out next year, if Grand Theft Auto comes out, I'm just like terrified of where that might land. Not earlier in the year. You know, it might be towards the end, but it is nice to see dates starting to show up.
Jerrica
Yeah. Thinking it through. Like we, we talked about GTA a couple days ago on the Gamescast because It was the one year anniversary of the GTA 6 trailer dropping. And it's just wild that we haven't gotten any information on the game since then. But with everything right now, I, I feel like there's not a chance we see GTA before October of next year.
Greg Miller
Yeah.
Jerrica
So I, who knows, like crazier things have happened but I feel like like that is the earliest people should be realistically expecting it. So kind of that to me says that the beginning half of the year is pretty safe. There is the other X factor though that I want to get into right here of rumor number two. Nate the Drake has heard that Nintendo's planning to reveal the Switch to in January, followed by a blowout event in May and a release in May or June. And according to him, Kirby Planet Robobot is coming to Nintendo Switch in 2025. So I lean towards believing this because Nate has been correct in the past about things. And the Kirby Planet Robot drop that to me is like, all right, that's just weird enough and it is so believable that it makes the rest of the news more believable to me. That game coming to Switch, I feel like, yeah, that's going to happen. That's one of the horsemen we're here. Have you played Planet Robot?
Greg Miller
No, Never heard of it.
Jerrica
Yeah, it's a great Kirby game. Very different. Kirby's all the, you know, Kirby's always trying. Like, they're mainly all platformers, but they always have, like, some weird gimmick to them. And Planet Robot is one of the, I would say, standout Kirby games of the last couple of them, if I remember correctly. That's the 3ds one has 3ds.
Greg Miller
Okay.
Jerrica
And that's why.
Greg Miller
Yeah, I wasn't really big into, like, handheld, so that's probably why I missed that. But I was like, I love a good Kirby game. So.
Jerrica
Yeah. And this is. This is a good Kirby game. You know, I don't think it's on the level of Forgotten Land, but, like, this is a good one of the good ones for sure. So it coming to Switch, I think makes sense. I do feel like we are running out of the Wii U ports to make it over to the Switch. And I think it's good that we're getting a couple 3Ds ports with like, Luigi's Mansion 2 and now this, because 3Ds is one of those systems that I feel like could easily be forgotten and games just get stuck there forever. And if you don't actually have the 3Ds hardware in the games, like, you're not able to play them, especially with the 3ds store being down now. So I do think that it's good that some of the highlight titles get ported over to the Switch. So, yeah, this very much a rumor. Who the hell knows? But I'm. I'm hopeful for it.
Greg Miller
I just want Wind Waker to get remade at some point. I want that so bad. Whenever I see Nintendo News, I'm like, where's Wind Waker with my new Switch? That's what I want.
Jerrica
Yeah, it's.
Greg Miller
I don't know if I'm like, the minority here, but I feel like other people might want it.
Jerrica
Oh, I think a lot of people do. Yeah.
Greg Miller
Okay. It's a big thing. Okay, cool. I'm in the club finally. Yes.
Jerrica
I also think it's inevitable. I'm shocked it's taking this long. Like how?
Greg Miller
Yeah, what the heck.
Jerrica
I guarantee the game's done. I guarantee Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are just sitting at Nintendo and they're just trying to strategize when's the right time to put it out. I'm assuming. I know that the Switch 2 is going to be backwards compatible, so I'M like not really concerned at this point about holding it off for the next console or whatever. Just give us Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. But they're going to like. I really feel like there's no chance that we don't get those games. It's just a matter of when. And it's frustrating that we're waiting for these old ass games, but hey, that's Nintendo, man. But what do you think about the, the timeline being presented here? Like obviously this could totally just be pulled out of Nate's ass. It's not like this is rocket science dates to put together, but a reveal in January, blowout event in May, release in May or June. Anything stand out about that to you?
Greg Miller
Not really. I mean I, I love like when did the Switch come out? I'm sorry, I don't remember. Like 27 earlier in the year.
Jerrica
I'm sorry, it was March. March 27th.
Greg Miller
March. Okay. Yeah, so they probably want to stick around that same time frame. But I think any kind of console launch that's not just like bogged down by the holiday season in the last part of the year is always a great move. And you know, down the road, months later there'll, there will be I guess SKU options where people can buy bundles and like games, different versions of it. I'm always one of the first ones in with the new whatever it is. So I will be picking it up and then before summer, whatever game, you know, I assume there might be one or two games that will be not at launch but coming very soon that we get to hear about.
Jerrica
Yes, for sure.
Greg Miller
No, I think this is super believable. Like makes sense.
Jerrica
Yeah, definitely makes sense. I think there's a lot of wiggle room here for like slight movement. But like January feels right to me for some level of information for the Switch too. Like I, I was pretty steadfast on it being October this year that we were first going to get any formal announcement of it. And that would have just been in line with how they did Switch one, which was October, got the first commercial January, the blowout March, the actual release. I thought they were going to follow that. So the fact that they didn't. And Planet Robobot being talked about here like we know we're getting Donkey Kong HD Country Returns HD in January, a couple other titles as well. I, I can see Planet Robobot being in that. February, March potentially. But a January reveal to some extent of the Switch 2 makes sense. I don't know at this point if they're going to Do a commercial and then a blowout event. It might just be the blowout event because the Switch had so much mystery around it and it was such a new concept that they had to kind of introduce to people of hey, this is a console that you take on the go. They are one in the same. And how unbelievable that was at the time. Whereas I fingers crossed, don't expect that Nintendo is going to come out and have to explain why their new console is a refrigerator or some shit. Like just give us the Switch to, you know what I mean?
Greg Miller
Yeah, we know what to expect. You know. I wonder, I don't know if this has been discussed at all. A little behind on my handheld rumor news, but is there going to be like any multiple size options or just one console? Obviously nothing's like for real confirmed but do you see them doing two different like screen sizes or just one switch? This is a Switch 2.
Jerrica
It's one thing from all that we've heard so far and so far everything has been rumors but there has been a lot of leaked accessories and leaked chip sets and leaked just kind of like form factor things. It seems like the Switch 2 is going to be a 7 inch screen LCD or LED, not OLED. And it'll be the only skew that there is at launch. We got to imagine Switch to light at some point, Switch to OLED at some point. Double triple dip from Nintendo. You know, get them hardware sales up and get your, the whole family gets one, all that stuff. I imagine that will all happen. Having said that, me being as hopeful and optimistic as I am and a tech fan and a Nintendo fan and just a tortured soul when it comes to this, I'm really, really hoping that there's two skews. I really hope that it launches and that OLED's an option. I don't think there's going to be different screen sizes at launch. I think screen sizes like it's going to be just that standard seven. I think they're going to want it to be a very premium experience. And I do think that, you know I was saying earlier that Nintendo just, just make a Switch to like we don't need some new gimmick. I do think that the thing they need to sell people on of the Switch 2 is hey, this one's actually powerful. This one can play Elden Ring. This one can do the things that you never thought it could do. And we are, we are in the game with the big boys closer than we've been since the GameCube in 2001. I think that messaging is very important for them and I think that, yeah, them putting that on a sexy big screen because 7 inches to me is kind of like. God, 7 inches is kind of like as high as you want to get before it starts getting uncomfortable. God, Tim, I mean it the right way. Okay.
D
It works every you which way.
Jerrica
I feel myself turning red right now.
Greg Miller
I was a little bummed to hear, like, yeah, it's not gonna, you know, I get it like performance and trying to get a, you know, a device that can do like run these more powerful games. But like, I am such an OLED lady now. I love that there's probably a catchier name, but I just. My eyes are broke as all I want to play on is an OLED screen.
Jerrica
I'm bummed there with you. Yeah, it's going to be a major bummer. And it so far seems like, like it's going to be the case that it's not oled. But there's something about that that just feels wrong to me. And I know people are going to argue like, oh, they can always put out the OLED edition later and get people to upgrade. Like, I don't think that that's. I mean, I. Hey, I know that I'm crazy here. I know. But like, I still believe that we're getting no LED day one. But I've been wrong many times and this is definitely a hope more than a expectation. But I will say I was thinking about this earlier today because I wasn't sure if our GamesCast topic, if the boys were going to have played enough marvel to sustain a whole show, but it sounds like they have. But I was thinking of topics we could come up with and I was going to ask, like, what is the gaming thing that you're most excited for, period? Whether it's this year, next year. And it could be a game itself or an announcement or a console or something because for me it's the switch to reveal event. I can't freaking wait for this, man.
Greg Miller
All right, so you want to.
Jerrica
Yeah. What about you?
Greg Miller
Yeah, you know, it's really tough. Like I guess the first. The first thing just comes to my mind. I'm just like, really want to know. I guess it's sort of two wishes, but like, I just really want to know what Santa Monica's working on. Sony Santa Monica. Like, I want to hear what they've been, what they've been cooking up. It's probably like top of the list.
Jerrica
Do you think we get that next year, the announcement of it?
Greg Miller
Yeah. I do. I think it's a good chance like we're starting to thin out with PlayStation, I guess scheduling and like what's to come. Like it's about time where we get some excitement, some things to look forward to again.
Jerrica
Yeah, I my gut right now tells me put this on the books everybody. There will be a September PlayStation showcase that starts giving us thank you Kevin. Starts giving us some answers. September, everybody throw on the books.
Greg Miller
I'll put in the calendar.
Jerrica
Story number four Ubisoft's reportedly considering how to structure a 10 cent buyout. This comes from Wesleyan Pool at IGN. Ubisoft share price skyrocketed today amid intensifying rumors that Chinese megacorp Tencent is engaged in buyout talks. I'm very happy that Greg Miller is not here today so he doesn't need to come out here and do his stupid ass fake money talks. The company behind Assassin's Creed, Far Cry and Rainbow six Siege, has suffered a torrid year with multiple studio closures, mass layoffs and game shutdowns. The company's next big game, Assassin's Creed Shadows, was delayed into 2025 and Star Wars Outlaws failed to meet sales expectations, according to routers. Reuters Reuters Ubisoft shareholders are are considering how to structure a possible buyout of the French company without reducing the founding GMO family's control. The GMO family is the largest shareholder in Ubisoft and is reportedly in talks with Tencent and other investors at its as it seeks funding a management buyout. Tencent is the second largest shareholder in Ubisoft with 10% and according to Reuters, Reuters Reuters has yet to decide whether to fund the buyout. Rioters said Tencent's indecision is partly because it has asked for a greater say on future board decisions, including cash flow distribution, in return for financing the deal. Apparently the Guillemot family has yet to agree to those terms, but Tencent's willing to wait for them to come around. Tencent declined to comment when contacted by Returs, with the Guillot family rep failing to respond. But a Ubisoft spokesperson did comment, saying, we remain committed to making decisions in the best interest of all of our stakeholders. In this context, as we have already indicated, the company is also reviewing all of its strategic options.
D
I believe it's pronounced Reuters Reuters. Yeah, I believe so.
Jerrica
There you go.
Greg Miller
I was saying Reuters in my head also.
D
What I meant to do earlier was this.
Jerrica
Oh, that's a speculation station.
D
Yeah, I know. That was earlier when.
Jerrica
God, okay, we had. Yeah, we just got to gotta get it?
D
It's just when we were doing guest up and guessed up. Doesn't have any of the sounds.
Jerrica
Yeah.
D
Found out the hard way.
Jerrica
There we go. Here we go. Thank you. Thank you. Every Ubisoft story, deeds, the Money song, everybody. Jerrica. Ubisoft getting acquired. 10 cent get an involved. Any thoughts?
Greg Miller
What a situation. That's not surprising. But I don't know if I'm understanding this right. It sounds like they want to figure out how to sell it, but they also want to keep making decisions for it.
Jerrica
It kind of sounds to me like worst case scenario. Yeah, like this. This does with. With how bizarre Ubisoft has been the last couple years and the decisions made and the quality of output and the public reception to all of it. I am not filled with hope from this story. I do think that this is where there's smoke, there's fire type situation. We've seen Ubisoft gets courted, Slash forcefully attempted to be taken over multiple times and they've been able to kind of fight that off. That was a different time though, where Ubisoft was making different levels of money, different levels of critical quality reception games. So where they're at now, I really do think that we are going to see updates to this story. I do think that acquisition to some extent is inevitable for Ubisoft. So I think we just got to kind of figure out what. What is the best case scenario here because I do think that clearly the GMO family is a problem when it comes to Ubisoft for many reasons.
Greg Miller
So I don't know, I'm trying to be optimistically excited because, like, you know, at some point, maybe, yes, the folks at. The great folks at Ubisoft that are working on all these incredible experiences and hopefully, you know, can see a project all the way through and have a great time and have success with said game and not worried about getting, you know, tossed to another project or pulled or something, not being, you know, extended for a sequel. We talk about like other games with Ubisoft, but yeah, like I'm. I don't. It's a. It's a mess. I am curious to see like, how this shakes down. I don't think this is going to be a quick situation. Yeah, I don't really. It's a mess. That's all I can say. It's a mess. I'm eager to see if what can be salvaged. But yeah, definitely this family. I don't know. It's been a big part of the problem too.
Jerrica
Yeah. Yeah. And you know I'm, I, I'm sure we're gonna continue to talk about Ubisoft a lot, but I think that we've been talking about doing a Ubisoft focused games cast of really talking about, like, what's going on because for a long time now, bless and I specifically on games daily have been just talking about, like, what is Ubisoft like when you look at what games they try to make and why, it's crazy because we are talking about such a uniquely positioned publisher and suite of developers because Ubisoft is truly worldwide. They have developers and teams around the world. They have IP out the WA zoo. There are just so many giant brands that they have. And to look at where they're at right now, they had the. I kept saying this, like the biggest one, two punch of how big can I get for Ubisoft With Star Wars Outlaws and Assassin's Creed Shadows. They're finally due in Japan and we saw how Outlaws was received and Shadows got delayed, which doesn't fill me with hope, but we'll see. And if those don't hit the things that were should have been, the sure fire hits, I don't know what's going to work. And this is coming from somebody who Game of the year. Prince of Persia, the Lost Crown, a Ubisoft game. But guess what? We're not getting more of that. The team's gone.
Greg Miller
Nope.
Jerrica
Team's done.
Greg Miller
Yeah, it sucks. Like, it sucks for, you know, those employees because I couldn't imagine, like, being, you know, really working on this project, being, you know, one of my things that I'm most proud of or finally excited to do this kind of work on this type, this title, and then just, I feel like there's just so much shifting around there too. Like, you, you really don't know what kind of project might be on, you know, for a year and the next year something completely different. So, yeah, yeah, I don't know.
Jerrica
And it gets even more dire when you look at what Ubisoft actually is putting out. And it's things like X Defiant, which we look at and we're like, oh, cool. Well, you better be monetizing that because the interest doesn't seem to be there, but hopefully it's making you the money it needs to. And. Oh, it's not. They're close to Ubisoft San Francisco. It's just gone. It's like, all right, cool. Well, I guess, like in case of emergencies, Splinter Cell remake. Let's have those three green lights go on for the 10th time. Will we Ever get that game? I don't freaking know. Ah, it's upset, man.
Greg Miller
It's like literal darts, you know, getting tossed. And it just. It states because, like, real folks are working on these games and, like, who's calling the shots? I don't know. Yeah.
Jerrica
Says Skull and Bones legally had to come out. Did story number five. Riot is making a League of Legends card game. Oh, Mike. This comes from Andrew Webster at the Verge. The League of Legends universe is expanding once again, this time with a physical card game. Riot Games announced today that it's developing a TCG set in the league universe. The game is currently known as Project K, and Riot says it's working with an unnamed partner in China to release the game there in early 2025. As for a global release, Riot says we're taking our time to find the right publishing partners. There aren't a lot of details available about Project K. According to Riot, the game has unique gameplay and is best when played with friends and in person. And development is being led by director Dave Guskin and producer Chen Grun. Chai, are you into the Riot verse at all? Oh, you're a big arcane girl.
Greg Miller
Oh, yes.
Jerrica
Yeah. Okay. Arcade aside, you into the games at all?
Greg Miller
A few years removed, but I played a lot of league in college. That was my thing. That and World of Warcraft. Played a lot, but I have not played in years because, like, no one I know from probably the last of folks and friends I have in my circle don't. Don't play leagues. That's right. Really? Why? I'm not playing.
Jerrica
Gotcha.
Greg Miller
I down. I downloaded the other day because I just wanted to peek around and like, you know, I sort of miss this. And now hearing that there's a card game coming really sucks. Is that's like a weakness of mine? I do collect Pokemon cards. You know, I. I don't play the game. I mean, I used to do. I used to as a kid, but like, the. The trading card game on my phone has been the best thing that's happened to me in a long time.
Jerrica
Oh, yeah. Every morning I wake up physical.
Greg Miller
Yeah.
Jerrica
Rip that.
Greg Miller
Open the pack.
Jerrica
Oh, gotta do it.
Greg Miller
Oh, yeah. It's the best start of the day. Like, that's how I start my day. So knowing that, you know, with this ip, like, I am definitely going to buy some cards. Will I play the game? I don't know. But I'll definitely collect them.
Jerrica
Hell, yeah. Very cool. Oh, man. Right. Getting into the TCG world, that's pretty big news, Jerrica. Yeah. But if I want to know about something small, where would I look?
Greg Miller
You go to our last story, which is the We News channel where we cover all the small news you need. Small news items you need to know about.
Jerrica
Exactly. And Toria, the Last Song is coming to Xbox Series on December 12th. It's already on PS5 and PC. My is coming to Street Fighter 6 in early 2025. My, my. The character from Guilty Gear. Chat let me know. Dynasty warriors origins demo surpassed 1 million downloads. Mike, get over here real quick. Let's get the chat hyped about drag. Dynasty Warriors Origins. Tim.
F
It was a really lit demo, actually. I encouraged you to check it out. One big battle sequence going from the front lines all the way through, storming to the gates and then taking on Lu Bu. I didn't know Lu Bu had it like that, but now I'm aware of it.
Jerrica
I downloaded it. It just was taking too long to download to actually play, but I got to download it. So maybe this weekend.
F
Tim, it's really fun because, like, you know me, I'm an old school, like PS2 target demo dynasty warriors kid. And to see what they've done over the years, how big the battlefields are, how many people are on it, and then the kind of mix of combat, they're adding a little more souls, like parrying into this. There's a lot of combat going on. Tagging in, other people doing their crazy moves. I had this lady with a hula hoop with a bunch of blades on the hula hoops.
Jerrica
It was sick. Hell yeah. Everybody, Dynasty warriors keep an eye out for it. Everybody. The chat saying Maya's from King of Fighters and all that, that makes a lot more sense. This is the character I was thinking about, but I misgamed her. Citizen Sleeper 2 launches on January 31st. On everything, it's also Game Pass Day 1. Moonlighter 2. The Endless Vault launches 2025 on Xbox Series, PS5 and PC. Tell me a little bit about that.
Greg Miller
I know it's just. It's just a Jerika game. It's a Jerrica ass game. Like, I love playing little rogue lights on my. Anything on the switch I could play there. Like, I can dive in and out with this. I saw the trailer for this and I saw that like they're going from, you know, like a 2D to 3D sort of environments. And it looks so good. It looks so cute.
Jerrica
Oh, wow.
Greg Miller
I love it. Dungeon crawling, getting some stuff to sell in your shop. So like you are acquiring all kinds of artifacts and other random things. And then in like during the day you. That's why it's called Moonliner. You sell things in the shop and try to get money for the things you find in the dungeon. Yeah, and it's fun. It's like a little shop simulator too. It's fun.
Jerrica
That's cool. I love the art style. It kind of looks like a more cel shaded bastion back in the day. Cool.
Greg Miller
Pretty.
Jerrica
And then Anton Blast is coming to Nintendo Switch on December 13th. I've been talking this game up the last couple days and I can't give it enough praise. Every night I've been just playing like 30 minutes to an hour and it's so much fun. It's on steam right now, but December 13th, you'll be able to get it on Switch. Highly recommend it if you're in to fun 2D platformers to check that out. That's it for We News. A couple super chats to get through here. Justin S says, Tim, could you do a watch along of the Gettys cut of the Super Mario Brothers movie? Hashtag release the Gettys cut. I feel like Nintendo would crucify me like that. That sounds like very, very, very. But I will tell you, it's pretty simple to get the movie and to get the soundtrack and to open premiere and to edit it to your liking. You know what I mean? That's all that I'm saying. That's all that I'm saying. It fits perfectly. That's all I'm saying. Jericho, if you don't know what I'm talking about here. The Super Mario Brothers movie Psycho, the.
D
Man is a psycho is what is happening here.
Jerrica
The Super Mario Brothers movie had a lot of amazing Nintendo Mario orchestrated music arranged by Brian Tyler, ok? A man that we respect, a man that made the Tokyo Drift soundtrack, ok? This dude gets fucking music, ok? But for some reason in like five or six scenes in the Mario movie that decided, you know what would fit here? Thunderstruck or Beastie Boys or take on me of all goddamn things while we're riding into Donkey Kong country for the first time on some Mario Kart.
D
Weird. It was a weird vibe.
Jerrica
Why'd they do that? It makes no sense. Especially when. When you get that Brian Tyler score and you listen to it and you listen to it in order and you go to the parts where those license songs are playing. They have scores. They have proper scores that are amazing, that are remixes of Nintendo songs we know and care about. And if you take them and you put them on that part of the movie it syncs up perfectly. Shut up perfectly.
Greg Miller
Wow. Okay.
Jerrica
Yeah. Damien L says sorry. Maybe this will help others too. My Patreon RSS feed hasn't worked for a while. No new podcast for two months. What do I do? Thanks, KF Crew. You can email support@kind of funny.com and we'll try to get more info for you specifically. But there was a Patreon update that affected a lot of the RSS feeds. Try refresh. Log out of your Patreon, log back in. That seems to be solving it for a lot of people. It's a Patreon thing. They change stuff. It's incredibly frustrating, but we appreciate you. Cognitive clip says two legends. Always great to see Jericho on kf. Ain't it the truth. Always good to see Jerika and Nando says, are you guys going to review Arcane on KF anytime soon? There's no official plan to do it, but there has been conversations of seeing if it's possible given time restraints and schedules. That is all I can confirm at this point in time. But don't expect it. Don't expect it. But I will just real quick ask you, did you like Season two?
Greg Miller
I can't stop thinking about it. I might be obsessed.
Jerrica
Yeah.
Greg Miller
I got the art book in and that is such a pleasure to go through, let me tell you. It's probably one of my favorite art making of books I've ever had for some piece of. Whether it's a movie or a game. Very cool.
Jerrica
Yeah.
Greg Miller
Yes. Overall impressions. Very impressed. I'm surprised they land the plane as well as they did.
Jerrica
Well, that's great to hear. Very, very cool. And Arcane's freaking awesome. I can't wait to watch season two.
Greg Miller
But I want to. I'm really tempted to like, run out of theater with some people.
Jerrica
Oh, yeah.
Greg Miller
I can watch it on a big screen. Yeah. It's a disservice. Like watching it on anything other than a theater screen. I feel like hell.
Jerrica
Yeah. Jerika, thank you so much for joining me today about this amazing episode of Games Daily. We're going to do our Gamescast review of Marvel Rivals so far. But before we get to that, where could people find you?
Greg Miller
You can find me anywhere on any platform at Jerkachu. It's like Pikachu, but with. My niece calls me Jerka and it's sort of cute. I'm Jerrica, obviously, but Jerka, which sort of sounds like I'm mean, I'm not. It's Jerk at you, though.
Jerrica
Follow her everywhere. Yep. Well, thank you so much for joining me today. Like I was saying, we're about to do games cast. After that, the boys are going to play some Marvel Rivals, so please hang out with us all day on Twitch TV. Kind of funny games. If you're watching on YouTube, though, I need you to make the jump to the other YouTube link. But until next time, love you all. Goodbye.
