So good. That was so good. I made a comparison I'm very happy about during the last interview. If you've not been watching the in review that we've been doing for Lord of the Rings, like, we started with Fellowship for Nick. In review. And we were only going to watch Fellowship. We all enjoyed that in review so much that we've pivoted and we're like, we're watching the rest of the trilogy. It. And so we've shifted plans. You know, I was supposed to watch 8 Mile with Nick this week, but then we're doing that later.

Plans change. They always do.

Plans change. But on the last interview, I made a comparison because Gandalf reminds me of two people that are very important to me in my life. He reminds me of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Both pretty cool dudes. Both pretty cool dudes. I like both of them. Story number one Spider Man Miles Morales actor talks about that missing Venom game I'm reading from Lewis Parker at Kotaku. For years, a standalone Venom game seemed like an obvious play for insomniac games. Spider Man 2 includes an entire spoilers for Spider Man 2, by the way. I assume everybody knows this. Yeah, if you don't know this, then that's kind of crazy. But spoilers For Spider Man 2 Spider Man 2 includes an entire level where he's playable, and the studio already established its willingness to ship smaller spinners offs in between tent pole Spider man sequels. Despite references to the project leaking in hacked Insomniac files back in 2023, a Venom game has yet to materialize. Miles Morales actor Naji Jeter addressed the confusion around the project in a new interview. Quote Let me give youall an exclusive, jeter told content creat Creators love it. Film via Insider Gaming Quote we were going to have a Venom game. We're going to drop a Venom game and a Venom dlc, but we lost Tony Todd, he continued. They showed me how it was going to start. They showed me how everything was going to be. It was going to be a Venom video game. Y' all played the Venom playthrough. It was just going to be a Venom video game. End quote. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, however, contradicted Jeter's version of events in a comment on Reset Era Quote this isn't true, he wrote regarding the actor's account of the project's cancellation. There's a little confusion as to whether Shrier means the standalone Venom game is still happening or or whether he specifically meant that the reason for its cancellation is incorrect, although I'd wager it's the former. That's because the insomniac game hack in late December 2023 revealed that the studio had been working on the standalone Venom game for quite some time before Todd's passing. The leak even included one tentative roadmap for the game to release in 2025. There's a whole lot to dig into here, Mike.

Honestly, I think the more I think the most interesting part of the story for me personally is Jason Sh saying that's incorrect.

I think for sure he's saying the game exists and it's happening, that, hey,

this isn't fully canceled. This will be. Yes, hitting the finish line at some point.

Yes, that's how I read it. And Jason, I think Jason is smart about the way. The ways in which he interacts and says things. I think he knows what he's saying when he says that isn't true or he knows how people will read it if he says that's incorrect.

Okay, I do like that as well. Bless. I think this is one of those. When I look at Insomniac and we start to look at the roadmap of what's next. Right. We know Wolverine is right around the corner this year, but then what is the follow up to that? And I think with the foundation that you have and what we know of Venom, the game.

And like, the goal of that, it would seem like that's the next logical step, is there will be a Venom game out here. Of course, losing the actor is very unfortunate. Probably puts a massive obstacle in your way to try to figure out how do you honor them? How do you finish the game with or without them? What do you do next?

There's a lot of question marks there, but with how much of a foundation you have with Spider Man 1 2, Miles Morales, I think the Lex logical step is, yeah, you would probably lean on a Venom game. Maybe it's a little bit smaller, easier to make for your next project to be the big one. But I do think that, yeah, when you read into Jason Schreier's treat here, it's like, yeah, it's probably not camp.

And there's a chance maybe he's not. Maybe he's. He's talking about, like, oh, no, it didn't happen like that. Because my. So my personal impression up until now was that the Venom game was not happening. And that comes from me having a source from years ago. Right. And so, like, when Naji. When the. When this news first broke out and it was Naji talking about it on that show, I was getting ready to come on here and do, like, And I told you so, like, I've been trying to tell y' all that this game's not happening and that you can't take leaks as gospel because plans internally change all the time. Like, video games get internally cancelled. The amount of video games that have been worked on that you never knew about that didn't come out is endless. Like that happens all the time. So you can't take. Take leaks as gospel. But yeah, I also just heard that it wasn't, this game isn't happening. And so Jason saying actually it is, or not saying Jason saying that's incorrect, which could mean it is happening, which could mean his retelling of it isn't fully true. Maybe got canceled for a different reason or whatever. Right. Like, I just find that truly fascinating because I think it should happen. I'm surprised that when you look at Spider Man 2 and the gameplay section that you play as Venom, it feels like it would transfer so naturally to a spin off game and a Venom video game coming out. Let's say two years after Spider Man 2 would be such a slam dunk. I think a Venom, you put Venom on the box, you just call it that. Boom, you're selling copies.

You're not worried about burnout. Maybe people saying, hey, I do want something different. Right. Do you think that the in between of Wolverine will give this a bigger boost if Venom does come out? Well, you're not worried of like Spider Man 1, Miles Morales, Spider Man 2, and now in the Venom of people going, hey, we've had four in a row now of this. This is a lot to take in. We'd rather have something fresh and new.

I don't think so. I think a, the Venom gameplay would be so different. I think you would make it anything where you just don't involve Spider man, might appear in a scene or something. Right. But you make it fully about the Venom gameplay, which is way more brawler, way more heavy of a character. You give it a different flavor. We're also talking about a time where video games take so long between releases. I think I, I actually go the opposite where I think if they could, they'd release these games back to back to back to back yearly. You know what I mean? Like, I think the fact that video games take so long is more of the struggle as opposed to them coming out too frequently. So I think the dream would have been to have had a Venom game out. Who knows? Tony Todd's passing could have had a thing on that. That could have delayed the game, that could have really fucked up their roadmap, maybe leads to them canceling it. But yeah, I think the Jason comment is the thing that makes me go, oh, interesting. Yeah, well, there's still hope.

So you said, you know, maybe you have some ins here and maybe your thoughts are a little bit different now. Why is that? Is it just because of the weight of Jason sh Do you think you still see this canceled? Where do you fall on this?

Cuz like, well, it's a couple things, right? One, I don't have multiple sources. I'm not somebody who comes out and talks about like what I know because I'm not a journalist in that way, right? Like don't report on my words. Do not take my word as gospel as well. I only talked to one person who would be in the know that told me like, yeah, this, this isn't happening. Maybe he's wrong. You know what I mean? Maybe plans change. That's why I look at Jason. Because Jason, Jason knows his shit. I look at Jason Schreier as a way more credible. Like, okay, well you probably know five people. If I know one guy, you know five people that might have told you something that has. You probably have a more updated story. Because also what I heard was years ago as well. So.

So now the question is, is, is it that isn't true? Meaning it's not canceled and maybe we will see this or that isn't true. The reason why they canceled it isn't because they lost Tony Todd. Maybe it is. Hey, we didn't like the foundation of the game. Maybe we wanted to go a separate way after Wolverine. It will be interesting. Like you said. Bless you have like I brought up, you have the foundation of all the Spider mans. You would think that this would be a quicker process of making the game. It would be a slam dunk, right? Hey, here's a large dlc, here's a V. Venom standalone. Maybe it only takes two years, three years to make. We can get this out the gate faster. Like that is the best business move around, right? But yeah. Are people burnt out on that? Would people not vibe with a tankier Venom game? I like Spider man to be a little more agile, right?

My worry is I'm going to fight a bunch of goo monsters, right? Like all of a sudden now we get into the Venom situation. You have to keep it tight where it's going to be a lot of Venom goo monsters that you're going to fight. Is that what you want? What's the story?

Be very like, that was something I was thinking about as well is like that is such a cool set piece moment. But I. I would be interested to see if like after a couple of years of trying to build off of what they built in Spider Man 2 for Venom, like maybe there is a possibility that they looked at it after a couple years and they're like, we. It's hard for us to Find the fun in designing around this character.

Yeah. Also, I. I apologize. I accidentally killed Tony Hawk. Tony Hawk's alive. Oh, my bad. It was. I misspoke, man. I was hanging out in martooties last night. You know, give me some space. Yeah. You know, give me some grace here. But yeah, I think you were to make the Venom game, it would have to be tight. I would look at it as more of a Miles Morales type thing where campaign might be five hours with challenges or something. Right. Like five hours plus whatever other content you throw, you throw in there. Maybe in trying to figure that out is the Barrett thing of realizing, oh, shit, okay, well, this is actually harder to put into a full game. And maybe that's where you get into the burnout of it of like, all right, the more we make this game, the more it might just be Spider man or more it might be like, oh, okay, yeah, we. We have you just mowing down these enemies and maybe there's not enough challenge. Like, you know, you're right that making a set piece section is way different from building out a full game. But I do think if you can figure out a full Venom game, doesn't have to be a 20 hours experience. Could be a Miles Morales kind of spin off kind of thing. I think there could be something there that's really fun and I hope we see it. I think that'd be fun.

With the loss of Tony Todd, how do you handle that? I mean, you like that's a tough part, right? It's like tough.

How much did they record with him? How much do you have? Do you have enough? How do you now move on if that's not enough? Right. What do you do? That's probably a massive roadblock in their way right now, but I do agree. Bless. If you're the captain of the Insomniac ship, it goes Wolverine into Venom, which brings you back into the Spiderverse world another time. And then what's after that? I don't know, but that would seem the logical one, two punch here.

Yeah. I mean, here's the other thing is that I think Insomniac is at such a. They're. They're not hurting for projects. You know what I mean? Wolverine is out this year. You're going to make Spider Man 3 the. Again, not taking leaks as gospel, but one of the things in the leaks was that they're eventually going to do X Men, you know what I mean? And I think that makes sense to do the Wolverine game and then eventually get around to doing X Men. That could be really, really cool between all these things. Like, you also have Ratchet. If you want to go get back into the well, you could also do maybe your own another new original thing. Like, the options are too many right now for Insomniac to where I totally understand. If they get far enough in a Venom game and go, ah, this isn't working, it's probably an easier thing to go, all right, well, let's. Let's focus on a Wolverine then. And then let's focus in on Spider man and let's focus in on the things that are working for us and, you know, maybe sideline Venom for now.

Marvel Spider Man 2018, Marvel Spider Man, Miles Morales, 2020, 2021, Ratchet Clank, Marvel Spider Man 2, 2023, and then Wolverine 2026. You're coming out at a great cadence that we don't often see from other developers. Right. And there is the worry of like, well, if you cancel Venom, does that put a giant roadblock of, like, now we're waiting five years for the next Insomniac game? That would be unfortunate. Or they have something in the middle as that stopgap to keep this great cadence up.

I would. I would have to believe that Venom's not a big, full fledged, like seventy, eighty dollar video game. Right. Like, it would have to be something a bit shorter, but yeah, I would hope not. But also, even with that, their cadence is still better than the other PlayStation studios.

Steam controller launches on May 4, priced at 99.
