Only at the Sphere. Yesterday I had a pretty chill day. Did a stream where I try to predict the game awards nominees, what there will be. And it's going to be very fun getting into this because, like, I've not. I've not looked at most of the categories.

I've seen, like, what the Game of the Year nominations are because that's impossible to dodge. But, like, for this episode, I wanted to come in clean just to, like, see, you know, what the surprises are. I wanted to experience it, see how close I get. But then afterwards, I was talking to people in chat about like, yo, I'm looking for a game. I'm thinking about playing a puzzle game. Like, you know, I want something that's going to scratch my puzzle puzzle.

So people were saying Lorelei in the laser eyes, because I've been putting that off all year.

Finished the stream and I was like, let me boot up Lorelai. And I booted it up. And I was like, oh, man, this still feels too hardcore for what I'm feeling right now. And then I.

It's just like, it seems demanding. Oh, it seems like one of those games where I'm really going to need the notepad and I. I'm really going to need a lot.

Right. It seems like, like the dark souls of puzzle games, as some might say.

Do they really? Do they actually say that? I was just making that up. Oh, okay. But I played like 30 minutes and I was like, ooh, what if I. Let me try this other game called Case of the Golden Idol that I've heard Lucy James talk about. Okay. Okay. Let me tell you.

Is that the first one or the one that just came out?

Case of the Golden Idol is the first one because I do have both. I got the code for Ryze and I wanted to play Case before I played Ryze, so I bought Case. And let me tell you, this game fucks. Case of the Golden Idol is sick. Okay? It is a point and click puzzle game where you're essentially trying to solve these crime scenes by like, Clicking into like people's pockets and seeing like what's going on.

Like usually a scene will be you see like a dead body or you see like a person dying. And like you have either people around in different rooms or you have like clues around so you like point and click them. Okay, what the story is and see if you can put the story together. I meant to play this for maybe like 20 minutes. I ended up playing it for like an hour and a half last night before going to bed. Got super into it. And let me tell you what I appreciate about this game that I think I've been missing out of games quite a bit. This here is for a year where I've been playing a lot of long ass games that you know, take their time, that want to, you know, demand 90 hours of your play time and all this shit. Right?

These are all great selections. I don't know Mobile Legends Bang Bang, unless they switched. Wild Rift is what I used to know the mobile game as, so maybe they just switched the name. Or this is a game I've never seen. But these are all a great five selections for esports games. I'm trying to come off the top of my head as someone who watches a lot of esports, what other big ones should be there? You think of the fighting game community, right? You think of Call of Duty League, of course, Fortnite. But like, these are my typical. Here's the big names right there for esports, so thumbs up.

But it's also the thing of. I look at this. This isn't an exciting list to me.

I'm impressed that they're on there, but, yeah, the big dog is college football. I am blown away. It's not on there.

Because there's, like, less of a worldwide appeal for college football, obviously, because it's American college football.

I think you just got to keep in mind, like, if you're somebody that's reading kotaku and reading polygon and reading IGN and like your sources for video game news and media and reviews and media is based on, like, our small American bubble, I think you're going to miss out on a worldwide conversation and I think that's going to come into play when we get to things like game of the year that has, like, black myth on it. Right. And like, things that people maybe didn't see coming. Just keep that in mind that I think the amount of worldwide appeal is going to be. Is something to take into account here, which is why I think maybe you don't see college football get nominated. Moving on. We got best family game, Astrobot Princess peach Showtime, Super Mario party jamboree, the legend of zelda, echoes of wisdom and the plucky squire.

My recommendation has always been take RPG and turn it into action RPG and turn based rpg because I feel like that has more variety to it than like best action versus best action adventure.

I don't like the separation just because of the combat is different. An RPG is an rpg, you know.

You know, I. I just have. I, like, I feel like there can be a lot of cleaning up between best action, best action adventure and best rpg, just because there's. There's too much overlap between those three categories and I think there's too much confusion as to what makes what. What. Because you can say, yes, an RPG is an rpg. And I think that is true. The problem is that every game has RPG elements to it. And so like, I don't know, I look at Black Myth Wukong and I'm. And I, in my opinion, I think that has way more in common with an Elden Ring than it does with a Call of duty Black Ops 6. Right? I look at Stellar Blade and I'm like, that has way more in common again, with the Elden Ring than it does with a Warhammer's 40K Space Marine 2. I just think there's cleaning up there to be had. I'm not saying that I have the perfect solution as far as best action or action RPG versus turn based rpg, but I think it starts to get you to a place where you can kind of, you can see the lines, right? Put Baldur's Gate up against Unicorn Overlord. That makes more sense. Put Elden Ring up against like, I don't know, any other action rpg. Action rpg. Really quick.

Oh, like, and literally like it is, you are pressing square to punch, or you're pressing square to slash, or you're pressing X to jump. And like, I. And I'm gonna say something even more insane, right?

When I, When I. When I think of an action game, I think typically you think of almost like an action movie. Right. Michael Bay directed. Okay. You know, shooting guns. Yeah. Bloody. It's actually, I. I think video games, when I think about defining video game genres and categories, I think of them more on a mechanical level. And so I think if a game is based on like reflex, based on you are having a time of jump to get over an obstacle or whatever, I view that as action in a similar way that I view swinging a sword or I view like shooting a gun in a game. Because it is about your skill as a player. Right. Like, what is your timing? What is the way you engage with the game? Can you hit the button and execute? Right. For me, that's what makes an action an action game, an action game. Now talk about rpg. What makes an RPG an rpg?

What's an rpg?

Yeah, that's a very complicated question. Ok. For me, what makes an RPG an rpg? Are stats having a very high influence on your success over the course of maybe a journey? Right. And so, like, it is how you spec a character. It is you looking at those choices of, oh, I want to go all in on my luck. Oh, I want to, you know, take these points and put them into. I'm trying to think of an elder stamina or whatever it is.

The problem is every video game has that now.

Every video game has RPG elements. Elden Ring, I think, is a pure example of an rpg because those stats really do matter. Yeah, yeah, those stats really do matter for how you're approaching your character build. You look at somebody else's game and their main character is way different from how your main. From like your main character looks. Right. Like you are going to have a variety of different play styles across different players for that same game. For me, that is part of the core of what makes an RPG an rpg. Elden Ring, I think, is both. I think Elden Ring is an action game. I think Elden Ring is an rpg.

But does have adventure.

It does have adventure in it.

So I look at these three categories and I'm like Elden Ring, I think it's eligible for all three of these categories.

And that's my problem, is that we get into these three categories and so many games nowadays are eligible. Eligible for these three categories. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, same thing. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, I would say is eligible for all these categories.

Next up, we got best ongoing game, Destiny 2, Diablo 4, Final Fantasy 14, Fortnite Helldivers 2. I think that sounds about right.

But, like, Senua Saga Help Late too, I think, for sure. Yeah. Like, we both played that game. I think if that. If that game for me, brought anything to the table, it is like, oh, man. Like, they do such a good job with depicting what new is going through right? And like what like how she's experiencing psychosis and putting you kind of in the head of the new and then Tales of Kazarazza. I love what they do with that as well too. Like a really strong message of grief and getting over grief. Also, when you want to talk about like inclusivity or representing, you know, demographic demographics that haven't been represented before as strongly in video games, I love how deeply they went into African myths. Mythology of course like that hits close to home for me and I think yeah, tales can zara zal for games for impact for sure that makes sense.

Philippe Spall who Voices Heisme in Metaphor Refantagio has one of the best performances games the last couple of years. I also want to shout out Alejandro Saab, who voices. I think you just read off no categories that had DLC or best remasters in there.

So I think that's where we get into the problem of if there's no categories with that, you're going to see that happen. And when you have a game as good as eldering Shadow of the Earth Tree with that DLC and it's that good to dominate the conversation throughout the year and it's on people's minds and it's being voted on by hundreds of judges. Clearly it's good and that's why it's got to be there.

I want to pitch a games cast that is fixing the game awards and it's us bringing to the table what we would redo all the categories as because I think there is a discussion, I love having a discussion of like best action versus best Action adventure, you know, best shooter that somebody mentioned in chat of. Like, that feels like a category that should be There Best DLC slash expansion feels like one that is a slam dunk. I think we got it.

No matter what, there's going to be confusion. No matter what, there's going to be arguments, there's going to be conversation. Because video games are so many different things and it's such a variety that you cannot make a catch all thing. But yeah, like I think if you put in, put in a best DLC category or best expansion, you look at best ongoing and go, this is for what we consider live service titles.

Yes, yes. And then you look at expansions and go, hey, this is for. I don't like you figure out the words, I'm not a fucking game of war technician here. So I can't get into this right now. Maybe when we do the games cast episode or if we do a gamescast episode. But all that being said to your point and what you just mentioned and to I think the way I look at it, Elden Ring, Shadow of the Erdtree and I think I said the same things when we played cyberpunk Phantom Liberty last year. That was one of the best experiences I had in a video game this year. I look at Elden Ring, Shadow of the Erdtree. Let me use Cyberpunk as an example actually because I feel like I feel more stronger about that from last year. Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty was one of the best experiences I had. It was a top five experience for me in a video game last year. The content was new, the areas that I'm exploring was new, the characters were new, the story was new and I'm playing 20 hours of new content here. If you took that same thing and all in, this comes back to Elden Ring, right? Shadow of the Erdtree. If you take Shadow of the Erdtree or you take a Phantom Liberty or you take a expansion of that nature and said, hey, let's just drop the standalone and allow you to play this without buying the previous game, guess what? That would make it a standalone game and it would end up in this Category anyway. Right. I feel like we're. It is. We are, I guess, getting into the semantics talking thing a bit too much when it comes to. Oh, no, DLC doesn't deserve it.

Like. Like, if a DLC expansion is, I guess, quality enough, sizable enough, like, for me is giving me the enjoyment of a new experience with a video game. I don't know. I. For me, it works for me. I. I don't have a problem with that.

Shadow of the Earth Tree was one of the best experiences in video games this year for me. I think it had the juice. It clearly had the quality. I think it was strong enough to be nominated in this. And so I'm on the side of. Yeah, this is it. Should this be its own category?

Bless. I think that's where you got to go, to the future of its own. But, like, right now, when I look at that list. Yes, Shadow of the Earth Tree is in there, and it should be in there.

If. If whoever's running it, if Barrett, for example, if we. If we call Barrett, like, the arbiter, which Barrett actually pretty much is. Right?

Now imagine telling a team their work doesn't count because a bunch of people already made that game years ago. And I think he's more so talking about Silent Hill 2 here, but then also RE2 remake team. You made one of the greatest survival horror games ever. But you can't be Game of the Year because that one with the old ass graphics and tank controls exists. Sorry. And I think there's something similar in that sentiment about dlc. Like they still put in a lot of work to make something really incredible.

I think that's a decent argument. Right. Like, especially if a game already had. Had its flowers. Are we, you know, not that we're taking it away because again, like, I'm of the mind that people worked very hard on Shadow of the Erdtree. Like, that is a. That is a Shadow of the Erdtree is a new product. People worked for years on that thing, and it's one of the best things of the year. I think it should be awarded. I'm not necessarily against the idea of a DLC category. That way we can award that thing and then have it feel like a. Okay, cool. There's more space for games that are new to get those flowers.

There's enough games getting DLC every year to give you a top five too as well.

I like this. RPG is first a role playing game where your choices in the story take focus. The character sheet, systems of skills and equipment serves as a. Serves that purpose, but is wrongly perceived as the RPG definition.

I think that's. I think both are equivalent. I think both things matter.

As far as story choice. But I think the problem is that I think video game RPGs, it's tougher to make those story choices matter as much because RPG comes from tabletop stuff where it is. All right, you have your character sheet, you are filling out characters to be their unique thing. And then also we have so much agency when you're playing a D and D game with friends. When you're talking about video games. If you're going to go by that is a core thing of RPGs for video games, I think we are sizing that down like crazy. That's just where. That's where. That's where I come from. Yeah. I feel like you look at Baldur's Gate 3 and go, you are the standard for RPGs and not many video games can hit what Baldur's Gate 3 does.

Okay, I like that. Let's talk about game of the Year for a little bit longer because I don't want to let you go. I think there was some conversation in this office of like, Will Black, Myth, Wukong, make this list. Made this list. Are we surprised by that?

I'm not. I'm not super surprised. I guess I'm a little bit surprised about what didn't make it, which is. I'm surprised Helldivers 2 didn't make it.

Yeah. And then Dragon Age, the Veilguard. I'm not super surprised. I think I'm surprised from the sense that Dragon Age the Veilguard is kind of the prototypical game of the year. Yeah, it is a. Yeah, it is a Polished like action adventure rpg.

The last entry in the series did win the game of the year award that year like 10 years ago.

This is, this is me as somebody who's like, I'm not like a Dragon Age person, but just based off of, of the type of game Dragon Age is, I would have thought that that was a shoe and I think it.

Came in too hot. I was thinking about this yesterday of like the people who played it and reviewed it really loved it. But I think you still needed enough people outside of just reviewers for specific outlets to like really get into it. And it being another 40 to 60 hour game. I just, I wonder if not enough people like really got to the end to be confident in being like hey, let's nominate this for game of the Year.

So many strong games. I wasn't blown away. I'm not surprised that that Dragon Age didn't make this. I don't think that, I don't think that's on my big six here for what in this category.

Let's talk about Black Myth then. Because Black Myth is one that I think surprises us a little bit. But that again comes back to the worldwide aspect for me of Game of Game awards where you look at all, you look at all those outlets and you think about I guess just what Black Myth is in the way. In the same way that I view Dragon Age as like a prototypical, like this is what a Game awards nominee usually is for a game Game of the Year. I think Black Myth Wukong hits the checks those boxes while at the same time being something that I think sticks out a bit more, right? Like the cutscenes in Black Myth look ridiculous. The end of chapter sequences for that game, wild, crazy ass boss fights that got like a lot of attention online, right? That was one of those games where you open up TikTok in like there's so many people that are just playing black myth on TikTok Live, right? So many people that are reacting to moments of that game. I think that game got so much attention, you know, let alone even like the influence and the impact of that game in China. The Steam concurrence at the time.

I think that, I think that translates to like, okay, well this is unequivocally one of the biggest games of the year. I think there is a popularity conversation that happens with the game awards nominees for game of the year where like you have to be an excellent game for sure. But also I think popularity carries it a long way which is why I'm surprised to get to see. I'm surprised and happy to see Balatro here.
