Foreign what's up? And welcome to the Kind of Funny Games cast for Friday, July 18, 2025. The last couple days have been filled with red. A lot of that Nintendo red goodness. But today I'm feeling pretty blue. Bless. How about you?
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I'm feeling pretty blue as well, Tim.
Tim Gettys
And it's nice.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
You know, because it still feels a little red, if you know what I'm talking about. Oh, yeah. Like Astrobot may be the closest video game to a Nintendo video game that' not made by Nintendo in history.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Everything got a little bit of red in it.
Tim Gettys
Yeah, just, you know, just every.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Everything has a little bit of red in it, cuz, you know, it all came from Nintendo.
Tim Gettys
How are you doing these days?
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I'm doing good. I had a fun day yesterday, of course, playing Don Kong Bonanza. Very excited to get back to it during the stream later today. And then afterwards went and grabbed drinks with Janet Garcia, who's in town for a preview event.
Tim Gettys
How was that? How is she?
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
It was fantastic. She's awesome, right? It was me. What? It was me, Janet, Jill from the Indian. Former Barry and Alyssa. Right. So we were just all kicking it. Yeah. Having a good time and like. Oh, one of those ones where I was like trying to be. Be an adult. And I looked at the time, I was like, all right, it's like, you know, it's 8:30, I should probably get home, go to bed at a decent time so I can do all that stuff. And they were like, we got time for one more.
Tim Gettys
One more. Just one more. See, what surprises me is that group of people. Right?
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Oh, really?
Tim Gettys
Janet, Jill, Barrett, you, Alyssa out.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
Launch night at Donkey Kong.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Oh, yeah. Okay.
Tim Gettys
But I mean, that group specifically.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
That's a donked up group legitimately.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
It was the thing where I don't think I had realized when Janet first hit me up that it was the launch night of Donkey Kong. And so like it was this week where I looked at the calendar and I was like, oh no, what have I done? But it's like, you know, Jane is not in town often.
Tim Gettys
Yeah, exactly. Donkey Kong's not going anywhere. Yeah, Donkey Kong anymore.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
After the stream yesterday, not much more. I. So I ended up doing that last drink and then got home late. And honestly, it was one drink too many. I slept like shit last night, but got home, played like I probably got like five more Golden Bananas and I was like, I just gotta go. Go to bed.
Tim Gettys
Barrett's not here yet.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah. You're just putting it together. You're just putting it Together?
Tim Gettys
Yeah. Yeah.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Bear's not here yet.
Tim Gettys
Kevin walked out. I was like, where's Barrett? I'm like, I don't know. I haven't seen him yet. That is very, very, very funny. Yeah. So I. I don't want to spend too much time talking about this because we do have to talk about the little bot, Astro Bot. But you haven't officially talked about Donkey Kong Bonanza in your first three hours with it.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah, I mean, I'm enjoying it. I. I almost don't want to, like, let it out until I'm further in.
Tim Gettys
Because also, like, we will be doing a. Another review, at least another review of Donkey Kong with more people playing.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah. But it's also. This is one. It's funny because I'm going. I think I'm going to say this with Astrobot as well, as far as letting games marinate and simmer a little bit, where. My first three hours with DK Bonanza, I'm actually surprised by how much I. I have to get used to the controls and used to, like, the type of game it is, which is very refreshing because going into a Nintendo 3D platformer, I should know what that is, right? I should. It should be the easy thing of, like, okay, cool, I'm gonna go collect the things and, like, hop around and do all that. Right. But, like, I'm so used to Nintendo 3D platformers, or I'm so used to an astrobot situation. DK Bonanza, it's. It's very interesting because it's way more based around destruction and breaking through things and looking for things and all this shit. Right. Which is, like, I think is akin to how DK games are to an extent. Right. And also, like, I'm. I'm, you know, I'm from the streets of DK 64. And so, you know, in a way, this does kind of harken back to how that works as a collectathon platformer, where you're seeking and searching for collectibles or whatever. But my brain has been having to adjust these first three hours of playing this game, and so I'm enjoying it. I. I mean, I'm in love with, like, the aesthetic and the music and, like, the DK aspects and how much cinematic and story there is so far to it. But also, I. I don't think I'm. I'm not at, you know, peak fun yet. I think I'll get there once I fully adjust to this game.
Tim Gettys
Definitely a game that I. I enjoyed more and more as we went on, and it. I It didn't become a 10 in my mind until towards the end of the game, but specifically the post game is where it really crystallized for me. Yeah, but enough about Donkey Kong for now everybody. Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I've always wanted. I've always wondered about that person, about that because, you know, you're not talking to them directly. You know what I mean? It's their manager, just like me. And their manager has a vibe. You know what I mean?
Tim Gettys
You know what I mean by shady rays? I can tell you about that later. For now, let's start with the topic of the show. And yes to everybody in the chat. I am wearing a hat because it is haircut day. The mane's getting too long. See that? Someone said I'm looking like Clark Kent in the new Superman movie. Yeah, him walking down the street all, like, bouncing and.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Anyway, horn sweat.
Tim Gettys
No, I don't know.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I said it like that.
Tim Gettys
All right, here we are. Bless Astrobot, our game of the year here at. Kind of funny last year. We reviewed it then, and now there was a lot more content. All free. Kind of wild. There was one Christmas level that they dropped. There was. There was actually kind of a. A whole level. There was multiple bots to collect in that. There was the Speedrun challenges. Right. A whole galaxy of Speedrunning. And then there was the Void galaxy that had two sets of five levels that are very, very difficult. But guess what? If you beat them all, you unlock the final challenge.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah, dude.
Tim Gettys
And then you get to do all of that. And it was very damn hard. I'mma be real.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
The last challenge level.
Tim Gettys
So. Yes, the last challenge level. And. And a handful of the other ones. I'm just like, oh, my God, that good type of hard. You know what I mean? So I want to talk all about that stuff. But let's start just overall with our review of Astrobot. I forgot where you landed last year, and I want to know where you are now.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah. So last year when I reviewed Astrobot, I gave it a 9.5 out of 10. I'm not going back to, like, fully listen to my review, but if I were to, like, transport myself back into time and even, like, you know, thinking about how I felt going into this dlc, right. Like, I remember probably my main complaints might have been that the roster of villains didn't. They didn't move the needle for me, right? Like, I look at the fucking alien guy and, like, there's something to the visual design of Astrobot that I think I start to, like, veer toward the Tim Gettys side of the spectrum of, like, looking at these guys and being like, I feel like this could be better, especially toward the villains. I think Astrobots design itself, I'm with you, but I'm also, like, I think he kind of works as an avatar, where he can put on any sort of outfit and it can kind of work with his design. Right. So I kind of go back and forth on that, but I know that was an element to it. I think there was also maybe a challenge element to it where I wanted the game to, like, be more challenging in some places now that we're here in 2025 with, I imagine all, if not just most of the DLC is out. I don't know if they've spoken on that anymore.
Tim Gettys
They haven't spoken on it, but this feels very final. Like, the fact that there was the unlockable final challenge level and the way that that was presented, feeling like the main game had that as well. And this, it did the. Thank you for playing after it. I, I. And also there was, like, the custom music for that level. It feels very put in a bow on this amazing project.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
And earlier, right, I mentioned DK and the idea of, like, you know, I got to let my feelings simmer on this thing. Astrobot has been very interesting to go back to over the year. And, like, I think I had the moment this last week after beating the, like, final challenge and then going to the hub area and, like, all of the Astrobots greeting me and, like, seeing that they've done it. Yeah, like, you got Cloud. You got Sephi.
Tim Gettys
They did it.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
You got Towin from Dark Cloud. You got. You got, like, two B. You got two B. You got the characters from the Christmas level, which are, like, an assortment of, like, the Spider man, the fucking Spider.
Tim Gettys
Man, dude, when Miles popped up, like, I know we saw in the state of play, but having him join this crew, it's like, whoa. Yeah, this is kind of amazing.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I think letting myself sit with Astrobot over the course of the year has made me reflect on it. And like, I think now I'm at the place where I can safely say that it's a 10 out of 10 video game for me. Right. I think there was something that was holding it back when we reviewed it about a year ago, but now, like, looking back at it, like, I don't know, like, I think it's been able to hit and maintain that level of specialness. When you're talking about what makes a platformer special, it is the feelings that they evoke in terms of like bringing you into the world. It is like maybe the nostalgia that they can invoke or maybe the feelings of connection that they can evoke when you see these characters that you love and you know, want to experience more of. It is for me the challenge. And the challenge was brought with the, the Vicious Void galaxy. Right. Like getting to that final challenge and it taking me maybe like an hour, hour and a half.
Tim Gettys
Yeah.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
To beat of just, you know, doing that one more, one more try. Not being able to put the controller down. That is the feeling that I strive for in video games. Absolutely. That's the feeling I want to feel of being frustrated, but also not, I cannot put this controller down until I beat this thing. And I think it was even cemented as more special when I, you know, went through all the levels once. I then played through them all again and having the muscle memory of like knowing the places that I wanted to skip in the level so I can like get, you know, get to the end faster and all this stuff. Right. Like, these are really, really well designed levels as DLC levels and I, I like, I mean, obviously in the main, the main assortment of levels, there's something special about, you know, them having to balance the thing of, you know, making the Astrobots collectible and making them feel like they're full fledged polish and also maintaining the A to B feel. I think getting this game in short bursts that are A to B. See if you can get to the end now, see if you can get there in under 45 seconds or whatever it is. Right. Like, I think that experience have getting, you know, accrual levels, that is that and then also getting the Christmas level. That for me is also the other side of the spectrum of what I love out of a platformer. Let me Explore something that's open. Let me just, you know, play around with the tools. Being able to switch between the different abilities and go around and have to solve how to get each of the bots. Like, I man, this game did it all for me. And so yeah, my up to date review on Astrobot Overall is a 10 out of 10.
Tim Gettys
Yeah.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
What about you?
Tim Gettys
I mean, I love that.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Right?
Tim Gettys
I gave it a 10 out of 10 last year and I not only stand by it, I feel it even more. I'm right there with you where I do think that time has only benefited this game. And Tundra Boy in the chat says, I kind of wish they did a big paid DLC instead. Didn't feel much fanfare about the smaller updates. And yeah, you know, there's the post game kind of support is. I don't think there's a one size fits all answer to like, what is the best plan? In fact, I don't even think that there necessarily is the best plan that fits any situation because no matter what, it's going to be very difficult to get everyone on the same page of like, we're gonna do this. Like, in fact, the reason we're even doing this episode is I realized that I hadn't played since one of the like, not even all of the Speedrun levels were out yet. Yeah. When I stopped keeping up with it all and I was like, oh my God, I gotta get back to this. So I kind of pitched us on like, what if we did that? Like, what if we actually went back and made sure that we got to all of them and holy crap, everybody listening to this right now, if you fell off of those or like didn't even get to them, There is a game's worth of content. There's a weekend's worth of content for you in Astrobot. Like, it's substantial. And I feel like the Speedrun stuff was cool and I enjoyed it a lot. But it wasn't until the Vicious Void stuff galaxy that I really think that they kicked it up a notch where I was like, oh man, running through in the Speedrun. I love the novelty of that.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
But there's something about just having to get through the whole challenge as fast as possible from the jump that doesn't feel as satisfying to me as, hey, just get to the end, take your time, think about what you want to do.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
And I love how short the levels are when you know what you're doing. But when you're first trying to get through, it might take you four, five minutes without Dying to get to the end, but the next time you do it, It'll take you 20 seconds. Oh, you know, and I love that. I feel like that really just shows that you get good at it, you get better. You understand how they're trying to have you use the abilities. And for a game that focuses so much on abilities, I thought the challenge levels really, really showed off. Them taking what we played in the base game just. Just further enough to remind me, oh, wow, this game is so special. And some of the criticisms we might have had before of, like, ODD wasn't hard enough. There weren't enough of the challenge levels.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah, that is solved.
Tim Gettys
Yeah, that's entirely solved with this collection of dlc. And the last thing for me is I have had one of the best weeks of my life in video games. Playing these levels in Astrobot and Donkey Kong Bonanza and switching back and forth like two games, I give a 10 out of 10. I love that they can live side by side. They're very different as 3D platformers. I think we are living in probably the greatest time for 3D platforms in history when it comes to how many different teams out there are proving that they actually give a shit about the genre and about trying to either push it forward or just do what's been done before, but better than it was before. And I think that the sheer technical feats that this game pulls off and how much this pushes or not pushes, uses the PlayStation 5's tech. Whether it's the dualsense, the sounds, the haptics coming from the controller, but even the visuals, like how sharp everything looks and just how amazing it all is. Like, God, I love the art style that Nintendo has. Obviously, I do have the same problems that we've talked about ad nauseum about some of the character designs and the villains in the game and all of that, but the look of the game is on a next level and, oh, yeah, playing this, it really is something. As a Nintendo fanboy, I look at this and go, God damn, I wish Nintendo Hardware could do this. I really wish Donkey Kong could be like this. Keep the art style, but have this technical prowess that the PlayStation 5 has. Because God damn, Team Asobi is on another level. And I feel like I look at it and I'm like, which team do I care about more at this point? Team Sobe or the Nintendo team? The Mario. The 3D Mario team. And I'm like, I kind of put them on equal pedestal.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah, yeah. It's funny, you know, you talk about the abilities earlier and I think there's something to be said about. Well, one of the things you mentioned here, the DK Bonanza review was gimmicks and like, how fully committing and fully expounding upon your gimmick can really lead to something special. And you know, Astrobot, I don't. It's tough to even say like, what the gimmick of Astrobot is. It's just a good ass 3D platformer.
Tim Gettys
Right.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
But like, the abilities is what makes every level feel different. It's what makes every level feel unique. And I think going through these challenge levels has really enhanced like how I feel about the abilities they give you. Right. Like as we're. As Kevin's been, you know, showing B roll from level to level. I don't. I think there's rarely like a weak link in the chain. Right. Like I, The. The one ability that I don't love is.
Tim Gettys
Let me guess.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah, go for it.
Tim Gettys
The monkey climbing one where you have to turn the controller.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I hate that.
Tim Gettys
Yeah.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I was like, why? And I, I get why.
Tim Gettys
Right?
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Because it's like, cool. Y' all had fun with it in the office. Like, also, like, I was that in the original, like Astrobot, Astro's playroom. Yeah. So like, I think that's just like a carryover from what they've had before. So I get it. But also get rid of that. But outside of that, I love these abilities. Even with that. Right. Like, it's not that bad. I just don't want to do like, not as good.
Tim Gettys
I mean, that's the thing is I think that the quality level of the game is so high in every aspect that when you do get to something that's not as fun, it feels like a sore thumb. Like, it feels like it really stands out. So, yeah, I, I'm very, very impressed with this game and how well it holds up. Which, like, sounds stupid, but I'm saying how well it holds up in terms of, like, it feels like the first time playing it. Like, I'll never forget my first time playing this game at Summer Game Fest where I sat there and I got to do all the way up to. I think it was the first boss fight, like fighting the big octopus thing. And that was thrilling. That was one of my favorite video game sequences ever because it just added so well between the music playing the game, the cinematics, just the, the set piece of it all.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
Was so special and the game just kind of kept delivering on that. And that is true all the way to the end. Like the final Challenge in this, in the DLC pack. I mean, I have no notes. Like, it was very difficult. The music was amazing. Like it's the Astrobot music that we know. But like, they were like, fuck it. This is the Elden Ring final boss version. And when you start getting up to the top and the choir version of the fucking theme starts.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
I was like, holy shit, how could this possibly get better? And then you get to the top and you unlock Sephiroth.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
And I'm like, the choir was leading to Sephiroth. This is insane.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
My thing is I. Because I as. As I was going through the levels this last time, right, I was assigning each level a number score based off off of how I felt. And I gave the last level 10 out of 10. The one thing I'll say is that I thought that that level was going to be twice as long and make you have have to do every ability which would have been my ultimate version of what you could have done with that, but also might have been excessive. And so like it's fine that they didn't do that, but part of me was like, yo, is this really going to be like the ultimate, ultimate gauntlet? And granted is it is a difficult challenge. And like, I do love how far they go with it because I had to lock in, man. I love the one. The part where I think this is like the tambourine clap part, right? Where like you have the rotating platforms and you have to like run across like three almost like Tetris piece shaped rotating platforms while using the Tetris or using the tambourine clap to like rotate them back and forth. And it's so crazy going from my first time approaching that platform to being like, damn, this seems kind of impossible to now like I get on that platform and I don't feel on that now. Now I'm like so locked in when I know exactly what to do here, right? And that goes for pretty much every, like every part of a level. There's something to be said about their level design because like, yeah, every part of a level almost has the thought of. All right, we know how a player might try to attempt this the first time, but for every part of a level we kind of have the idea of like what the ideal optimized way of getting to this level, what the most speed is. And so when I have my. The dog thing that like thrusts you forward. Oh yeah, the thruster Bust dog is what we can call it, right? Like when I have this thing, I know if I see the little the big bell, enemies that come down and do the way. The damage wave thing, right. Like, I know that I am zooming right into that and then right, like, to the next direction I need to go. Right. Like, there is an opinion I am optimizing as I play of knowing, okay, this is. This is exactly the way they want me to go in order to optimize my route. And it feels so satisfying to do that. And like, even with that, another thing I want to compliment is we're talking about the variety of abilities. Earlier on, Kevin was showing the balloon ability where you fill up like lanky Kong and DK64 for the people that get that right. Like that level where you're kind of having to practice, like, okay, I want to. I'm going to bounce off the ground so I can, like, get this at the perfect time. Bounce feels good and the bounce feels great. And I'm going to inflate and I'm going to like, find the first chance that I can bounce again so I don't, like, run out of stamina. Bounce, boom, back up. The way that. That feels completely different than the suck it up level, which is the one where you. Where you have the guy, the elephant. Yeah. That sucks up the gooey material to then create platforms for yourself. And the different ways that I think about how to optimize my run through. Through that level. You know what I mean? Like, the suck it up level especially, I love, because you have to get.
Tim Gettys
Oh, this, this. Yeah, this one. Right? You're.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Oh, no, not this one. I'm talking. I'm talking about the elephant.
Tim Gettys
Okay, yeah, yeah, but, oh, yeah, in this level as well. It's just a different part of it.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah, it's funny because there are elephants in that clip too. But, like, it's so funny how. How creative I feel like I can be when it is like I'm creating those little, like, icicle ramps that I can go through and having to figure out, okay, can I just create my own level essentially here, like, to get to the end of this thing, what is a. How. How do I skip as much level as possible here? And that shit is so fucking satisfying. It is such good level design.
Tim Gettys
Yeah, it really, really is. In the chat, we have Car Carl Alexander saying that's wild to put Team of Sobe to a decade's worth of legendary games from Nintendo. Obviously what I'm saying comes with a level of, I mean, insane respect for Nintendo and what they have done. But I do think that it's not crazy to say that when you look at, you talk about, you know, decades of Nintendo last decade, not even five years of Timasobi putting out Astro's rescue Mission.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Oh, Astro rescue mission.
Tim Gettys
Yeah, Astrobot Rescue mission. We got Astrobots Playroom, and then now this. And the way that they followed it up with all this DLC that we're talking about today, like, we are just getting consistent 10 out of 10 quality Astrobot content for the last five years. And I don't think that's going to end anytime soon. I feel like maybe we don't get anything this year or anything more in the next 365 days, but maybe we do. Like, I feel like Team of Sobi are just cooking and ready to put meals on the table.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I wouldn't be surprised to get another Team of Sobe game in the next 18 months, right? Like, I think they have something special there at Sony. I think we're seeing a shift in how you think about producing games in the industry. And I was listening to a really good podcast. I've. Dude, I've referenced post games from Chris Plant, like, once every two days, right? But he had an episode with Salivir Nelson, who we're actually going to be interviewing within the next couple of weeks. But in talking about the games industry with X Olivier, one of the things that I think Zaliver said that really stuck with me was it being a thing of, you know, like, the thing that you have to focus on as a studio is less about, like, how do you put out a good game? And more so, how do you create a. How do you create an ecosystem that can put out good games?
Tim Gettys
Right?
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
How do you create a structure in a studio that can continually put out good games and, you know, be able to sustain that and be able to do that in a healthy way? I think that's what you're seeing a lot of people find challenge with and Team Asobi. Like, when me and Roger went there to check out, asked about like a week early, it felt like they had such a good head on their shoulders. And one of the questions I asked was like, hey, like, do you guys think you're gonna expand or make bigger games? Right? And like, they were very much like, hey, we, like, we like the scope of game that we make. If we were to expand as a studio, we wouldn't then make bigger games. We would probably just then make more games, right? Like, they want to keep. Yeah, they want to keep, like, the size that they're at because that allows them to be able to do things like this and make games that are.
Tim Gettys
Yeah.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
At a reasonable scope. And I, I again I wouldn't be surprised to see if they came out came back around with the game in the next like couple years because they distract me as that kind of studio.
Tim Gettys
I expect it.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
Right. Like that especially now that it very much seemingly feels like this DLC is over with the Thanksgiving playing kind of end to this game. Like yeah, they're probably already working on whatever's next, whether that's Astrobot 2 or something different.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
And to the, to the. Maybe both to the Nintendo thing, I want to mention as well. I think I agree wholeheartedly with like the comparison you make and the reason I do is I think it's less so even like you know, the history of Nintendo versus the history of team and so because obviously that's not comparable but I think there's something to be said about how much reverence Team Asobi has for Nintendo. You look back at that game awards speech and how much they directly essentially thanked Nintendo for you know, giving them the bible of how to do this. And even like on this on stage Nicholas Doucet or Doucet from a team of. So we even mentioned like yo, I don't. We're not supposed to say this right. But like hey, like you know, shout out Nintendo Mario. Yeah, like it's about that guy Mario really changed our game. And I think that's special. I think the fact that Nintendo and multiple companies. Right. Like I look at a rare as well and like you know, so many companies that have put out quality platformers and quality video games. You then get the scenario where like years pass and new developers rise up and get to level up off of those past games. So I look at it less so like a you know, Nintendo versus team of Soviet. More so like Kendrick. How Kendrick Lamar took inspiration from Tupac situation. Right.
Tim Gettys
Absolutely. We're getting better. Incredibly apt comparison.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah. We get to get better content year over year because these studios get to learn from the previous greats.
Tim Gettys
And I, I, you know, to expound a little bit more on what I was saying earlier, like it's so impressive where you look at Nintendo and it's almost like their special sauce is creativity within boundaries of technology. And you know, like trying to find like the fact that Tears of the Kingdom works at all on the Switch one is insane. You know, but it's like that's part of what makes the game special is that the, they stripped back a lot of the stuff that quote unquote, doesn't matter. To find what does and kind of create the game around that. On the other side, Team of Sobey, like you look at them and it's. Every single Astrobot game has been pushing the tech to use it in ways that are incredibly unique and that dates back to psvr. Right? Like, they created one of the most special VR games kind of unanimously of what people have experienced with the. The game. Something that is different than a lot of even some of the other very highly regarded VR titles. People love Rescue Mission and, and you take that, you take Playroom, which was like the greatest pack in tech demo to show off a new console ever besides Wii Sports. And Wii Sports, again, was less about the tech and more about, again, the limitations of the Wii not being that powerful, but had motion controls. It took advantage of this gimmick. Astrobot and Team Asobi take advantage of gimmicks and the tech. And that I think is incredibly special. We do not see this from anybody else with 3D platformers. Yeah. Nowhere close.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Oh yeah. And again, I think it's why PlayStation values them, right? And like, you know, I think there's, there's something to be said about when a team can play by the. By the rules that's set for them, right? Or play with the like, with the game that they're given and excel so much that they're then elevated, right? The fact that like Team of Sobe was out here and they're like, all right, cool, we're making a PSVR VR thing and they did such a good job. And then it's like, all right, going to make a tech demo. And then they, they did such a good job that PlayStation had to be like, make a full game. Like, just make a full. Make a full game.
Tim Gettys
Local girl says, is the Astrobot new content free? Yes, it is. And then after they made a full game, they made a bunch of free, amazing dlc. Like, it's kind of a perfect story. Winning game of the year and then just continuing to deliver to the point that a year later, Bless is upping his review to a 10. Yeah, like that. They earned that. That's so, so cool and so special. So I, I love it. We're going to keep talking about Astro. We got a whole bunch of super chats if you have any you want to get in, please get them in now. And we're back with some super chats. El Capitan says I got stuck at the Megamix Mastery or whatever the final level is. Yeah, I think that's the.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
That's it.
Tim Gettys
I had to stop when I almost broke my Astrobot controller and I wasn't even using it.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
That's great. That's.
Tim Gettys
I get it though, man. It is one of those like anger inducing type of experiences. But it's not frustrating. Yeah, like I think, like it's that special thing of like, yes, it is going to take you a long time and it is going to try your patience, but in a way that is on you. You know, slow down, figure out what they want you to do and do it.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
And then figure out how you like what I love about Astrobot and I feel like this is true about a lot of these type of games. You'll be in a section and you'll die and then you'll do it again. You run at it, you die. Then the third time you run at it and you're like, I'm Gonna stop and figure this out. And then you almost make it, but you still die. But you're like, okay, I get what I'm supposed to do.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
And then you just kind of times that by 15 and next thing you know, you're now three sections ahead. And when you do that first section, you can do it with your eyes closed.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
You know what felt so hard just 10 runs ago? All of a sudden you're like, oh, okay, I use this power. I do this, I do this and I'm good. You know, and you kind of like get this like knowledge base that just adds on top of itself. And at a certain point you get into a rhythm game like flow state where you're just zooming the.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
The two things I'll say about this level is one, the slime guys that spit out at you when I tell you I've had these. I've had so, so many unnecessary deaths to those guys because like they'll be sitting on a platform that doesn't have any space to. Now, as somebody who hasn't watched the Titanic, Right. I feel like Leonardo DiCaprio where I'm like makes the space on this thing. Is that. Is that what happened?
Tim Gettys
Yeah, yeah. A direct quote actually. Yeah.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Was it a door?
Tim Gettys
Yeah, like a cabinet door thing. Yeah.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I've seen so many memes and so many family guys gotta watch Titanic. I should watch Titanic. I know the song I like My.
Tim Gettys
Heart will Go on Amazing.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah, good ass song. Paint me like one of your French girls. Yeah.
Tim Gettys
Great scene. Great movie.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
So those slime guys, that's the first thing. The second thing is to the super chat. I think there's something so special about how well Astrobot the game like holds itself together like the game in the way that like I we. I always mentioned this with Breath of the Wild about like man. Crazy how I just don't get bugs in this game. I feel like this game should be breaking every two seconds. The kingdom this game should be breaking. Oh, is it part of a door?
Tim Gettys
Oh, interesting.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
It's the like above the door. You see that? Oh, directly underneath it.
Tim Gettys
Wow, that's so freaking weird. I also don't see. Looks like they just took the shape and just put it there. Like that's not that. But maybe we're blocking a part that I can't see.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I mean definitely we're blocking apart on the. Yeah. Sorry to distract us and I can't zoom.
Tim Gettys
Ye. That's funny. But it does look like they just put a yellow outline to the shape of the other Thing.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
It's definitely not the exact same molding, but you can tell where the framing was.
Tim Gettys
Got it.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
It's just hard because. Yes. The part that you guys are covering and I'm trying to figure out how to turn off your camera. Where is it? So funny.
Tim Gettys
It's hilarious.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
But, yeah, like, I talked about it with you.
Tim Gettys
Okay. Yeah, there we go. That does change things.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah. Okay. That lines up. That game doesn't break. Right. And, like. And it feels so many times, like, man, this should. This should just break apart. Same thing with Astrobot. For me, where I'm doing these platforming challenges. I am, like, doing this hardcore platforming challenge where if anything feels unfair, then it is like, I should be getting so mad I'm throwing my controller around. You know what I mean? Like, if any of this feels like it's, like, not solid, the player gets mad. And there are very few times. Maybe like one. Maybe one time where I was like, oh, man, I'm. I'm collisioning with geometry in a way that I don't like. But, like, the other 80 times that I'm running through this level, I. It's all. It's on me. I jumped at the wrong time. I ran into a wall because I panicked or something. Right. Like, the, the game is just so solid and so polished. And I think that is an underrated feature of a really good platformer. Right. The way that it keeps you immersed.
Tim Gettys
Immersed. Are there options? Are there choices you need to make about performance or quality or that? No, it just works. Yes, it just works. Like, it's so great, man. Gondo's Condor says Astrobot stands as the best first party PS5 game.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I love that I, I, that. Because that makes me think of.
Tim Gettys
It does make me think. I mean, that's you. Of course. You hear a statement, you want to be like, no, no, no.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I'm not mad at.
Tim Gettys
But I'm not mad at it either. It's like. Yeah, it's like. I mean, I feel like at the end of the day, if we thought it through, through, it might be.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I think I would still put. I'm a big Returnal fan. I know Return. More people would probably say Astrobot over eternal. I'm a big Returnal fan. And then God of a Ragnarok.
Tim Gettys
Yeah.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Is like, a tough one for me to be as far as first party stuff, but the top three, probably. I know I'm missing things in my head. Like, top three. I can see it.
Tim Gettys
Yeah. Kebab says, can't believe we never got another shrinking level. Yeah. Although I do feel like the little mouse one.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
Like, that was such a special level. So it is weird that. That we. That's a gimmick we didn't go back to.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Well, that showed up in the Christmas level.
Tim Gettys
You're right. Yeah, there was a little bit of it. Yeah. Yeah.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Where you got to like, go into like a little. I don't even know what it was, like a house or something. I don't know. But you. You're in like a little town, actually, and you could like, go into, like, shrink down. Go into them.
Tim Gettys
They should have done like a whole level from it. You know what I mean?
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah. But then, like, I think the problem with that in the challenge level is that that ability feels more inherent to exploring around. You're right. As opposed to like A to B. Yeah, you're right.
Tim Gettys
Let's see. Ed Reed, fan says Tim, off topic, but the Fantastic Four First Step soundtracks, now available to purchase. See, I hate that for a couple reasons. One, available to purchase. Does that mean I can download it now or just pre order? Like pre buy?
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Which.
Tim Gettys
Whatever. And even if I can, why. Why are you giving me the music before the movie's out? Yeah, don't do that. That should be spoiling stuff.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
You know, Star Wars Episode one was spoiled. Wait, by the soundtrack. The soundtrack came out and like, one of the song titles was like, the Death of Qui Gon Jinn.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Oh, my God.
Tim Gettys
Like, something that like. Like Qui Gon Jin's fate or some like that. It's like, guys, what the hell are we doing here?
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
God.
Tim Gettys
But I'm very excited for the Fantastic Four movie and soundtrack.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I'm also excited for the Fantastic Four movie. It's your last chance.
Tim Gettys
It's their last.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
It's your last chance.
Tim Gettys
Marvel Dave, bro. Yeah. It's called the Noble Death of Qui Gon.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
That's amazing.
Tim Gettys
Davro says Astro is special. First game I got the platinum for, and it was the first game I got to let my firstborn experience with me. And now he loves it, too. I love that. And I do think I remember when the game came out. There was a lot of stories like that as well. And on both ends. Right. Like being able to have these new, brand new games that feel like our childhood, that new kids can have as their childhood. Like, that's. I saw a tweet a couple of days ago about Donkey Kong Bonanza that was just like, can you believe that this is going to be some kid's childhood?
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
And it's like, God, that's special. That's so cool. But on top of that, the Platinum, like I do feel like this is a game that more people I know that don't have a single other Platinum have the Astrobot Platinum for Playroom and for this game. Like that's just. People want to do everything the game has to offer. That's a great sign of a great game.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Can you, man, now you, you mentioned it as far as this is going to be a kid's childhood. Right. Like, I just imagine. Are there still the schoolyard conversations in the way that when I was, when I was growing up, the big debate was always ocarina of Time vs Final Fantasy 7. Like what's the greatest game of all time? Are there going to be the playground debates of Astrobot vs DK Bonanza? Because if so, I want to, I want to be in those debates. I want to be part of it.
Tim Gettys
I love the idea.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I'm gonna hit up my little like my nephews.
Tim Gettys
Yeah.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
And be like, yo, I'm gonna play both these games and then we're gonna have a, we're gonna go to court. Like we're gonna like have my, my sister is gonna be the judge, you know, my brother in law, he's gonna be, I guess the, either the jury or the bailiff. I don't know. And then we're gonna have an argument. We're gonna have a debate. Me and my nephews.
Tim Gettys
It's so funny. I see people saying it's gonna be Roblox or Fortnite and Minecraft. I, I truly believe that like yes, kids are playing those things. I don't think that the same kids that are playing those things are the ones that would be playing these games. I think that the traditional gamers are still going to exist. I just think that they're not going to be the dominant form. It's going to be more of a niche thing. But guess what? When we grew up playing games, they were niche too. I think that like there will be more people that are into making Nintendo their personality than there were for our generation. And that sounds hard to believe, but I bet it's true just by sheer numbers.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
Despite the fact that there's no argument that Roblox and Fortnite and Minecraft are going to be way bigger for, for, for a bunch more kids. But there's just more people playing all these games.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah, I, I think that last part for sure. Like, yeah, there are more people playing video games. So I think there's going to be room for all of It.
Tim Gettys
Rabbit of Carbonog says, would it be crazy to say astrobot's the best PS5 exclusive? I'm pretty comfortable saying it. The PS5 exclusive part is just like, in my opinion, it just gets weird this generation because it almost doesn't matter. There are so few of those.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Oh, like, true PS5.
Tim Gettys
PS5 exclusive. Because it's like, returnal.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Spider Man 2 is woe 7 rebirth.
Tim Gettys
Yeah.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Was that a PS5 exclusive?
Tim Gettys
Yeah.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah. It is a weird conversation. Yeah.
Tim Gettys
But I mean, again, it's up there like we're talking about a couple tensions. So, yeah, it's. I feel like at that point, it's just like, what are you looking for from a video game? And, like, I personally don't have any way of truly putting my foot down on Astrobot versus God of War Ragnarok. Not that that's a PS5 exclusive.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah. Yeah. But it's almost like, what are we doing?
Tim Gettys
Yeah, what are we doing? Amazing. We're lucky that we have them.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
One day we'll do the bracket, like, maybe at the end of the generation or like, at whatever time it makes sense. I'm down to do the PS5 game bracket. The PS5 generation bracket.
Tim Gettys
Yeah.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
And then we can have that conversation for fun and, like, you know, I think that would be a really fun one to see. Even if you put a poll in the audience, see where people go. Yeah, but just. It's so based on taste and what you're looking for.
Tim Gettys
Totally two opposite video games and the Rebirth. Oh, my God, what a game. We have Tundra Boy saying Ari Hub is missing Rebecca. Any bots missing for you? Oh, the Resident Evil Hub is missing Rebecca. Is that what you're saying? You want Rebecca? You care about Rebecca? Which one is Rebecca from Resident Evil 0? Oh, maybe the I respect you maybe.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Has every single other. What? What's the deal? What's the status on. Is his name Ethan? What's his name from Resident Evil? Winters. Ethan Winters.
Tim Gettys
Yeah. Yeah.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Is Ethan Winters in the game?
Tim Gettys
I don't think so.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Do we even know how Ethan Winters looks?
Tim Gettys
I don't know, man.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Have we ever seen his face?
Tim Gettys
I know it is for sure.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I've seen his missing thumb.
Tim Gettys
Omega bus was Tim shaming re0. I'm not shaming it. I'm just saying that that is a. A deep, deep poll. Specifically on the PlayStation side of things.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
It's a GameCube game, Sweet Tooth. Not in this game. CD splits and says Sweet tooth. He's the only real big missing bot, which is insane. Why? Like why is he not in there?
Tim Gettys
I don't know. I remember being upset about it when the game first came out.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
No way. This is Ethan Winters.
Tim Gettys
That's Ethan Winters.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I knew he was a loser. Sorry.
Tim Gettys
You see that guy, you go, loser.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I just know. I just know what he sounds like.
Tim Gettys
God, what he plays. So when you say the word loser, every once in a while, I go through this phase where I see comments that I just need to just not worry about, or I see tweets, like, not even necessarily geared towards me, just, like people say and stuff. And I had this, like, internal need to yell at them or, like, just respond and just, like, you know, get at them. Just, like, let all my toxic negativity out on them. Yeah, sometimes I just want to, like, scream loud sounds of them. But today I was just seeing a bunch of stuff that I just wanted to reply to a bunch of people in all caps. Just say loser. Oh, I didn't. Because you shouldn't do that. If you ever are feeling negative towards people or things or anything, open up a notepad, write all the words you want to write, write them again, and then delete the note.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I like that.
Tim Gettys
It feels good.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I like that.
Tim Gettys
Feels good. Thank you. There you go, Kev.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I responded to some Reddit the other week. Nobody noticed those.
Tim Gettys
That's why nobody noticed.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I was frustrated. They thought I hated Xbox. Like, I'll let them know. That'll teach them.
Tim Gettys
God, that's freaking taught nobody. Plus, yes, let's talk about the future of Astrobot. Let's talk about the future of Team of Sobey. Well, actually, does it need to be Astrobot?
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Well, I want. I want two conversations here because I do want to know what you want from the future of Astrobot. Like, specifically, what do you want to see from Astrobot 2? But then also, yeah, I do want to talk about Team of Sobey as well.
Tim Gettys
More. That's it. Like, I. It's funny because I feel like the biggest actual criticism towards Astrobot, specifically a year later, is it didn't do anything original. It's just Mario, why are we complaining about that? We don't get that much Mario. Like, that's the thing is, like, it might hit a point that we have been there, done that enough times that there is nothing novel. I don't agree that there's nothing in the original here. Like, I feel like the amount of creativity with the gimmicks, like, they really go out, and the difference of it being the tech, to me, that makes it original. This does feel different than Mario games. Because Mario games can't do a lot of this stuff allegedly. And even then it's like not geared towards that. So I just want more Astrobot. What I the dream would be. Yeah, like a more story based thing with just light story but something I can care about and a team of enemies that I also just care about. I don't care about these dudes at all. Having said that, I love the boss fights. So it's not that the enemies are the problem, it's their designs and their story that's the problem. Like for this game being so much about collecting PlayStation's past and all that stuff, like I feel like they could have had a team of PlayStation villains or whatever and that would have been really cool. Right. But I'm also somebody that doesn't think that the PlayStation nostalgia stuff like this game doesn't feel like a commercial to me in any negative way possible. So I just want more of this. I don't think they can do the exact same thing again of like it being all the PlayStation things, but also why the fuck not?
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah, it's. I think that part is tough because. Yeah, I don't, I don't. I don't want to just recollect all the same bots I just collected and I don't know, I mean I'd be very fascinated to see. Can you create another. Well, that's this deep of PlayStation characters that like I'm gonna see and pop off for. Right. Like that's a tough ask when you got all of the main ones here. And so could that look cool in like a different form? Could you do a thing where every like galaxy is modeled around a place? Like I'm. Instead of just one Horizon level, I'm going through five.
Tim Gettys
Yeah.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
You know, instead of just one local Roku level, I'm going through a local Roko universe kind of thing.
Tim Gettys
I mean more than that, I just feel like just we had all the representation except for Sweet tooth. Yeah. From PlayStation here. But it's like they were just bots get. Give us the little levels or even parts of level. Imagine there's one level you're going through and it's like one area is Resident Evil and the next area is Final Fantasy or whatever. It's like I would love that stuff.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
What you're proposing is PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale.
Tim Gettys
Yeah.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
What they did with the stage, I.
Tim Gettys
Mean which honestly would be real talk.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
That's every. If you do it where like. Yeah.
Tim Gettys
The levels are a mismatch of things.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
A mismatch of two different ips and like this, the story for the next Astrobot is like essentially battle world kind of situation where yeah, all these PlayStation games just like fucking smash together kind of thing. That could be really cool.
Tim Gettys
It could.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
I mean, that's the thing, right? It's like Donkey Kong country, tropical freeze. Like they had a gimmick for that game in terms of theming, right? Like with the tropical freeze. Yeah, it's like. Yeah, just do something like that where it's like mash. Like coming up with mashing the worlds together. That's pretty damn cool.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah, I. I think, you know, ideas like that I would be so down for on the. I agree with you as far as the boss stuff, right. Of. I think the boss design, the gameplay design of the boss is fantastic. The visual aesthetic, like the visual design and like the personalities of them. I would want more from. I. I would like more levels that are like the Christmas level. It doesn't have to be most levels or all the levels. Right. But I like, I just love the like exploring around collectathonie levels. Right. I want more of those. But I also think Astrobot really does excel with the A to B stuff. Right. So I want. I want more of a balance, I guess. I think I had like one more thing. I forgot what it was. But like, overall, you know, I think I'm with you that I just want more like I. I'm totally okay also with it not doing anything that's like super unique because yeah, like I'll take a premium, like, you know, well funded 3D platformer because we don't really get those.
Tim Gettys
We just don't get.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
We don't get those.
Tim Gettys
And you know, the. Again, we now have gotten a fair amount of Astro in the last five years because the team's so good about putting content out consistently. So I do think that it could get oversaturated at a certain point. I think we're far from that. And I think that this team has shown that they have enough creativity to make each of these projects standalone. Even if there is a lot of crossover from this game to that game, to this game. But I think that Astrobot too, especially now that. I mean, this is by far the most successful project, right? Like this. I mean, you know, Playroom being a pack in is cheating, but it's like I feel like this is definitely the most money that team of Sobey has made, PlayStation. So I think that that's going to be shown in their next game. And you talking about them not wanting to have Bigger scope for their games, but wanting to make more games. I also feel that just go the way, like putting the money into the same sized game, what could that look like? You know, what are the elements and ways that these games could be bigger or better? And I do think it could be more story, more like emphasis put into thinking about the characters and thinking about Astrobot as an ip. Because not everyone's going to want this. But like I know PlayStation wants an Astrobot movie or TV show or theme park or whatever it is. Like, this is just where video games are at now.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
So I think that's the tough thing is. Yeah. Figuring out what that is. Because I don't like, does PlayStation want an Astrobot TV show? Or like.
Tim Gettys
Sure, they're one game of the year.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
That's a good point. Yeah, it's huge. And I just don't know what an. Yeah. Like the Astrobot IP itself, the power of the IP is gameplay and other IPs, like those are like the two secret sauces that they got. And if you do a TV show, right. Like if you could do a thing where every episode is maybe like based off of a different ip, then that could be really fun. But I don't. I can't imagine that that's what they would chase. Right. Because that seems like a big undertaking.
Tim Gettys
I mean, that's what I'm saying though. Like that I. I have faith in the team to be able to do it though. Like, I feel like that is where the extra. That's the new difference that Astrobot 2 can have would be like figuring that out to make it make sense. But I also think that PlayStation owns so many properties and does have access to so many characters at this point. It's not like a PlayStation All Stars battle royale situation where they're like really, really just like scraping the bottom of the barrel.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
And on top of that, it's like, even with the iconic third party stuff, the clouds and the Crash Bandicoots, they're here, they're in the game. And I don't think that they'd be necessarily in the movie, but they could be.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah. And I do think that after this game, I think Team Asobi has earned a lot of trust from the PlayStation teams around them as far as using their IP and like doing it justice and not doing something that's going to like, mess up the perception of a God of war or mess up the perception of a local Roko or whatever horizon.
Tim Gettys
Right.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Like, I think after this game, I totally wouldn't be surprised to see if they were to do the thing where. All right, full world horizon, full galaxy, God of war, full galaxy. Spider Man. Right. Like I. And not that Spider man is a PlayStation IP. So that's might not be the best example. But like I think there's a lot of trust now in letting Astrobot do things with other PlayStation owned IP. So I think there's probably a lot to look forward to there.
Tim Gettys
Yeah. Besides Astrobot, do you think that they might be doing something else or do you think they are an Astro studio?
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I think they're doing something else. I think, I think it'd be smart to do something else. Right. Like I think having Astrobot as maybe you're like main guy and then going back and forth between that and something else or maybe like just other weird projects. There's such a creative studio and I don't think a studio that creative wants to keep doing kind of like the same thing. I imagine they want to try out different types of games. I, if I'm going by like my desire, I would love an Astro cart. I know that's like a very weird specific one. Right. But like the quality, the amount of quality they have in Astrobot, like just the 3D platformers, I think that polishing quality can translate to a successful kart racer.
Tim Gettys
Yeah. I mean obviously we've seen it many times before, but I mean even just looking at Naughty Dog with Crash bandicoot with crash 1 2, 3 and then crash team racing same team, you know, like they do think that the creativity of a 3D platformer, specifically these type obstacle based 3D platformers does translate well to at least what we traditionally think of for kart racers. I do think that the this more open world Forza Horizon style Mario Kart world style of kart racer might be a little more ambitious and not necessarily what I want from them to do. But yeah, and I don't even, that's.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
My thing is I don't even want something that's like big in scope.
Tim Gettys
Yeah.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I just want a straightforward 40, 50$. Yeah. Like let me choose my Aloy bot, race around and like have items like weapons, projectiles that are from different games. Let me drive around, use my Kratos ax to throw at other carts and shit like that. Right. And call today like I think and like yeah. Have the levels be different PlayStation IP again, I think the Astrobot formula, what you have going on there can copy and paste so well into a kart racer formula.
Tim Gettys
Yeah. Very naturally I don't necessarily want this, but would you Be interested in them reviving a IP that is not theirs.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Oh, that's a really good question.
Tim Gettys
Ape Escape, Jak and Daxter. Sly.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
You know, I could see Sly. Jak and Daxter for some reason, is a. Is tougher for me to see from them. I think Jack and Daxter has like, such a distinct style to it that I, I think might be a bit like, weird for them. Sly, though, for some reason seems like it fits and I think there's a demand for it that, like, honestly, I. I think that could work. Ape Escape, I mean, I personally don't really care for Ape Escape that much. I think it's neat. I think like, the, the game is cool, but I don't think a modern Ape Escape is necessary.
Tim Gettys
I, I totally agree with you and I know they're Ape Escape fans and I'm not rooting for them to not get what they want, but in my opinion, Astrobot already is the successor to Ape Escape. It's just, it is the platformer that uses the hardware and tech gimmicks. Like, that's the entire thing of Ape Escape was the dualsense, right? So I feel like. Or dual shock. So here I feel like we already kind of get that, but that also means that it wouldn't be that surprising to me and we already saw a full level of it, right? In Astrobot.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Is there enough, like, nostalgia, power, nape Escape, do you think?
Tim Gettys
Because I know I don't.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I think I could see a cool, maybe tech demo for the PlayStation 6, like in the way that we got Astro's Playroom. If you did like an Ape Escape Playroom situation from Team Asobi, I think that could be a cool way to do it.
Tim Gettys
But even then, even then it's like Astros, like, better, more powerful, branded. Like, I, I know Roger is a big Ape Escape guy, and again, I'm not yucking anyone's yum here. I just don't see Ape Escape as I put Ape Escape in the same category as Legend of Dragoon, where, yes, it can get a reboot or remake, whatever you want to call it. And like, some people will be really excited. Yeah, that is not a let's put our best man on this project type project.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Let's put Team Asobi on it. Yeah, it's funny, I've opened up now the, like a Wikipedia page that just has lists of Sony IP and yeah, like, it's weird trying to think of like, what would make sense to bring back. Right? Like, you don't really proper. The rapper isn't the answer, that's another one, right?
Tim Gettys
And I love Parappa the rapper.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
Like, let's just be real.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
It's like nobody wants knack.
Tim Gettys
They're gone. Oh, I think it was Ernie Cooper in the chat was saying that ape escapes, a game they never played, but they still want it so bad. It's their Parasite Eve. Parasite Eve, Another one of those.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah, Parasite Eve. But, like, that doesn't strike me as a team of sobe joint.
Tim Gettys
No, no, no, no.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I mean, I would love a dark cloud, but also, I don't see them making a dark. Like, if they made a dark cloud, I feel like they're like, it's tough because we've only seen them do Astrobot, right? Like, we've only seen Team Asobi do this ip. So really, I just. I don't know the scope of their abilities. Right. I don't know. Like, you know, Nicholas Doucet, the studio head, what are his favorite games? Like, what are the. The things? Like, what. Where does his brain go as far as, like, the kind of things that he thinks that he could make?
Tim Gettys
And we had Eric Williams on our God of War, Ragnarok spoiler cast. Right. And he expressed his love for Castlevania Symphony of the Night. And I think that that says a lot. Right? Yeah, that. That definitely is like, okay, cool. You can keep that in mind as the next Sony Santa Monica games are being developed. And yeah, you and Raj going to Japan and seeing the team, I feel like that did give you guys a huge insight into their creative mindset and, like, what directions they might go. And what's crazy about this is. Seems limitless. It just seems like the potential is just creative.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
Right.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
What about an Astrobot 2D platformer?
Tim Gettys
I mean. Yeah, right. Like, that definitely.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
That'd be cool.
Tim Gettys
Is also a possibility. Like, I. I think that that would be kind of surprising for them to do because I.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
It would have to be like a. I think they would have to be like a small project. Right. Like, I think it would have to be one of those things where it's like, oh, yeah, we. We knocked this shit out kind of thing on the PlayStation side. Like, it almost seems like something PlayStation wouldn't do. But we're talking about a God of war, possible Greek 2D action. Metroidvania.
Tim Gettys
Yeah. The difference between those, though, is I would. I imagine that if the Greek 2d metroidvania God of war exists, I do see that as coming to Steam.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Oh.
Tim Gettys
And if it doesn't, I think that's a major Fucking mistake.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
I don't know that a 2D platformer Astrobot would make that jump. Make that jump.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I mean, but like, Switch two, though.
Tim Gettys
I mean, I. I would love that.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
That makes sense to me.
Tim Gettys
Yeah. Be cool, Omega. Buster says, who would be the Sony villain Sinister Six?
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Oh, that's such a good question.
Tim Gettys
Such a great question. The problem is, you know, it's. It's. Are we. What type of reality are we dealing with? But these days, reality can change. Sephiroth.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
You know.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah. Okay, I see what you're saying.
Tim Gettys
This didn't even treated him that way. He was the final thing.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I mean, depending on where you stand on last was too. There's multiple answers I can get. Ellie, Abby. I guess you couldn't really do a Last was. Last was villain. Right. Because, like. No, yeah, that last was what you would do. What's his name from last was one who's chasing Ellie around this in the snow.
Tim Gettys
David.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
David. Like, no, no, but I mean, you.
Tim Gettys
Can just be a clicker, you know.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Oh, that's. But, yeah, but that's also.
Tim Gettys
I feel like that's more just like cannon fodder. Those are just like the random enemies.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
Fighting against.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I mean. Yeah. Do you get the Pharaoh dude from Horizon?
Tim Gettys
I don't think so. That's the thing is, I don't know that a Sinister 6 actually works for. For PlayStation Villain.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
If you. If you wanted to get real and, like, do. Yeah. If you wanted to be like Sephiroth. Liquid Snake. Right. Like, if you wanted to kind of get almost unrealistic with Psycho Mantis, that'd be so fucking sick. But, like, I mean, doctor. Dr. Nefarious. Is he the. Who's the crash one?
Tim Gettys
Neocortex.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Neocortex. Thank you.
Tim Gettys
And then Nefarious, Ratchet and Clank, which. That would really work.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah. That's four right there.
Tim Gettys
Yeah.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Trying to think of other. Who's the.
Tim Gettys
I don't know that this works as well as we thought it would.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah. It's the problem is that like. Like, the big PlayStation IP are all, like, the big villains. Yeah. The stories are too complex. The villains are just dudes. Like the Return. Like, who's the villain in Returnal? It's the planet.
Tim Gettys
Yeah. For real. Ares, probably from God of War.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Oh, yeah. See, I would have thought, like, Balder or like, what's his name From God of War. Ragnarok. Big Bad. The old. Old guy.
Tim Gettys
Yeah. Odin.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Thank you.
Tim Gettys
Yeah. God, he was so good.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
He was really good, huh? That wasn't Christopher Walken. Was it? Why do I. Why am I thinking it was Christopher?
Tim Gettys
He was. It was a big deal guy, though. Who was he?
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Odin, voice actor Christopher Walken. For some reason I have Chris Richard Shift. There you go.
Tim Gettys
Yeah. God, he's so good.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Why did I think it was Christopher Walken?
Tim Gettys
I mean, because you're blessed.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah. You know, that's fair.
Tim Gettys
Checkmate says Rocket Knight slash Sparkster needs a reboot button 3D. That'd be cool. I never really played those games, but I respect them.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
I don't. I'm not familiar with Rocket Knight slash Sparkster.
Tim Gettys
Shred Jaw says, has Tim played rare Saber Wolf on Game Boy Advance? It's basically DK and Cross Pokemon collect and place Mons to platforms and DK levels. And EG use Snorlax as a bounce pad. I never played Saber Wolf. I was always interested in it, though. Did you?
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
No, I did not. I'm still looking up Rocket Knight over here also. This looks kind of cool, I'm not gonna lie.
Tim Gettys
And that's all the super chats we have for today. Any final thoughts on Astrobot?
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
What a game, you know, like, I'm very excited. I. I think the conversation about the future of Team Asobi is the one is one that excites me, which is nice because that's not always the case when it comes to video game companies and like, you know, talking about the future, usually it's like, all right, how are they going to get out of this up kind of situation? So to be in a place where it feels like things are looking up and I'm going to knock on wood, right? Of like, you know, hey, PlayStation, like, you know, foster the studio. Well, I don't, don't fuck up the bag with tibasobe. Like, you got something here, right? Like, I'm, I'm very excited to see what that looks like. I'm very happy that we can have Astrobot being a game that exists in the current generation and current ecosystem of what video games are. Because a game like this is like. Like there's not many. Like there's not you. We're talking about like these premium, prestige, well funded 3D platformers that are polished and have great game design and great great minds behind them, right? Like, this is special and I'm, I'm glad that we're in a place now where we can look back and be like, yo, all right, this is something special. And like we got the DLC and it's fantastic and all this shit. And so, yeah, shout out Astrobot.
Tim Gettys
Yeah, and one other thing I want to say in line with that is how wild is it blessed that Astro Bot one game of the year at the game awards. A 3D platformer. It wasn't made by Nintendo. One game of the year 2024. That was in December. The game came out in September.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah, I think so. August. September. Yeah.
Tim Gettys
The game was announced in like, May.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Yeah, yeah.
Tim Gettys
We didn't know about the game. Like, there weren't rumors about, like, oh, like the team. We all were like, they must be doing something. But remember when they announced Astrobot and it was called Astrobot? It's like we're getting a full 3D platformer from this team. Wow.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Incredible stuff.
Tim Gettys
It's so cool. It's so cool, man. Let us know in the comments below what you think of Astrobot, if you've played the DLC or if you haven't. And because of this conversation, you now have your weekend plans. I hope that is you. Or I also hope you might have a Switch 2 when you're playing Donkey Kong Bonanza. Either way, you're going to have a great weekend, everybody. We have a full day of fun stuff still to come. Kind of funny game showdown featuring Nick Scarpino hosting. The prize of a lifetime is on the line. That's about to be next. After that, bless playing Donkey Kong. Till next time. Love y'. All. Goodbye.
Blessing Adeoye Jr.
Trying to find the Chris.
