Let's Tim host. My God, it feels good to be back. I've been. I've been itching for this. I've been having the best time of my life. Obviously, it's been very hard. It's been very fun. It's been very. It's been all these things, but watching guys, having to sit there, having to understand what it's like to be the audience, to be the chat that I'm looking at right now, listening to y' all do your Pokemon Day predictions and me just being like, I just want to talk. I just, I have things to say, you know, that's been really hard. And it's not like at least nothing else has happened the last couple weeks, right? At least it's been a very quiet news cycle. Nothing crazy happening. Like, oh man, Greg's been coming over a lot, like just dropping things off or picking things up and like all that. And I'll just see him for like a second of the amount of times it's like we only need to say like one word to each other. Just blue point. That's it. You know what I mean?
D
Bye.
C

B
Thank you so much.

So it's been great. You don't regret this decision? You're good.

B
I appreciate all of you, but like, hey, let's talk Resident Evil. Okay. Thank you so much for the. I've been talking about this baby for a long time.
C
We couldn't talk about Resident Evil without our patreon producers on patreon.com kind of funny. So thank you. Carl Jacobs, Omega, Buster and Delaney. The Psalm Twining for now, let's begin with what is and forever will be topic of the show Resident Evil Requiem review. It has finally happened. It is here, of course. The game is out this Friday in these United States of America. We've all played it, we've all beaten it. It's time to dive in and talk about it. Tim, I want to save you for last, honestly.
B
Oh, I'll take that.
C
Okay. Thank you very much. Roger, talk to me. Top level Resident Evil Requiem from Capcom, of course. Published, developed, Steam description reads what Requiem for the Dead. Nightmare for the living. Prepare to escape death in a heart stopping experience that will chill you to your core. Roger, how long did it take you to beat Resident Evil Requiem? What did you play it on? And of course, top level thoughts in a score for me, sir?
D
I mean, it's debated how long it took me to play this game because I finished.
C
Everybody else's clock is weird.
D
Yeah, my clock is weird. It says nine hours. I'm like, there's no way it's been nine hours. I'm thinking 12 to 13 would be my accurate guess. I was in the pause menu a lot, so I'm assuming that's what they were. Not counting. Yeah, I was completely smitten by this game. I was taken from moment one. I think this is the smartest culmination of almost a decade of maybe the greatest reinvention of a franchise ever Since Resident Evil 7 doing the remakes, leading all the way up to Resident Evil 9. I jumped in in Resident Evil 7 and then I played the remakes and now I'm here and it's like, wow, this was such a journey. And this feels like we're not even endgame. We're like building towards endgame. Right? We're building towards something way bigger. And this is just the start. And I'm so excited for this journey and that it's all come together here. I think this game is amazing. And RE9 is a 9 out of 10.
C
9 out of 10. Amazing on the kind of funny review scale. What did you play it on?
D
Oh, I played it on the PlayStation 5.
B
Okay, great. It's just normal PS5.
D
Yeah, just normal PS5.
C
Oh, interesting.
B
No problem.
C
I want to hear about that. I want to hear about that. Madeline, of course, you came all this way from LA to be part of this review. What'd you play it on? How long did it take? What did you think?
A
Yeah. So I am a slow gamer, so it took me 20 hours.
C
Okay.
A
A far cry from Rogers. Nine or 13.
B
Right.
C
When you beat it, it gives you a climb.
A
And I played it on base PS5 as well, so. But honestly, Resident Evil Requiem, I think is a love letter to the entire Resident Evil franchise. It has everything that I love about Resident Evil. And if it is a love letter, it's like one I'm gonna be reading again and again and again. It's terrifying, it's hilarious, and it's very hopeful, which I love for a horror franchise. And honestly, I think it might be the game of my. My game of the year.
C
Wow. You think it'll last the entire way?
A
I think it might.
C
Wow. Okay. All right. What's the score? On the kinda funny scale?
A
I will be giving it a 9 1/2 out of 10.
C
9.5 from Madeline Stanley.
B
I love that.
C
I love that too. Yeah. I have beaten Resident Evil Requiem according to the game clock at the end, it popped up with 10 hours, 25 minutes. And I was like, I don't know, it was longer than that, but I appreciate that. And I of course, played it on my Nintendo Switch.
A
Wow.
B
Oh, I didn't know that.
C
Timothy. You might not know this, but of course, that kind of funny. I'm the number one Pokemon fan. And here in the year of our Lord 2026, I've become kind of funny as a Nintendo Switch number one fan as well. It's all I've played this year with the exception of Skate, Rest in Peace, all these developers who got laid off today. But no, I've played everything this year on my Switch.
D
Wow.
C
I'm having a great time out there and played Resident Evil Requiem the entire way through on Switch 2. Don't regret it. We'll get into that discussion out there right away. So if you're worried about, oh, man, does it look good. Whatever looked great, ran great. Would have looked better on PlayStation, of course, where hair textures at times like, okay, I see this is the trade off I'm getting. Sure. But the ability to play in bed, you know, have it right there. Plug and play, plop it in, Take it with me. Go Everywhere was amazing, just like this game is. Resident Evil Requiem is in fact an amazing video game. I give it a 9 out of 10. I think it is an awesome experience. But more importantly, it is just so damn good and so much fun to play. I was terrified when I should have been terrified. I was empowered when I was empowered. And I think, you know, something that happened in this review period for me that doesn't happen often is that another game came in that I jumped over to start playing there. And I hate doing that. I don't do that. So when I was like, oh, man, I'm heads down in this review, but I need to go. I need to go roll credits. That's where I left off with you, which was right at the end, so, so close to the end. And I was like. I wasn't like dreading it, but I was like, oh, man, I'm already engaging with this. But I jumped back in and jumping back into it immediately, I was like, this game is so much fun. Like, what a fun game. And I said it, you know, before about Hell is Us last year. I'll say it again here, a masterclass in game design of like, giving you the right item of the right thing, the right moment when you needed that. Aha. Moment of seeing it all open up and understanding how you're going around. An amazing, amazing game. But of course, Tim Gettys, yes. When it comes to Resident Evil, kind of funny, the buck stops with you. Tell me what you played it on, how long it took you and what you think. Top level.
B
I played it on the PlayStation 5 Pro, which I was a little sad about because I just built my. My super banger PC and I was hopeful. Like, I kind of built it with this game in mind. And I've been really, really excited about all that stuff, but you know what I mean, Bears can't be choosing. Still had an amazing experience. It ran fantastically. Duh. On the PlayStation 5. Some little things. We'll get to that later. But PlayStation 5 Pro, it took me. My clock said 13 hours. Okay. But like, I definitely know it was at least 20 hours. But a lot of that was like me dealing with crying babies, changing diapers, doing all that stuff. So it's really hard for me to tell actually how much, how long the duration was for me. I would say realistically, I probably played about 11 hours or so.
C
Okay.
B
For this game, which I thought was the perfect amount for. For what they were giving me here. I would not need any more. I feel like this really kind of delivered what I'm looking for from a triple A video game experience, leaving me just completely satisfied. I would give resident evil requiem 9.5 on the kind of play scale. And the reason for that is I was really kind of trying to think about where I'm at, where nine amazing didn't seem quite enough. Like I kept trying to decide what is the word that comes to my mind and is it masterpiece? It's not. It is definitely not a masterpiece. But phenomenal, phenomenal kept coming to mind and I, because of that, I'm creating the tim gettys Phenomenal 9.5 just for this. But I really, I do think I can understand like nines make total sense to me. But for how much I love Resident Evil and what I love about Resident Evil, this game kind of just delivers all of it and then some. Any criticisms I have feel like either nitpicks or me just being like man, I could have used more of that. Yes. Like that's kind of like a great place to be. I can't wait to continue going back and play this game. I have a lot of rants I want to go on about how impressed I am about Resident Evil Requiem. But we'll get to all that stuff later.
C
And it's later I want to keep with you, Tim.
B
Okay.
C
You're coming out of retirement here. You're here, we dusted you off. I want to let you go.
B
I mean just starting with the rant that I actually feel like I'm going to need a little help from you on like this game got me so amped about Resident Evil again. And it's a great place to be because we've been inundated with Resident Evil content the last decade and it's all been good, it's all been great, it's all been debatably amazing or more like it's been such an amazing time to be a Resident Evil fan. And that hasn't always been the case like growing up in the 90s, obviously it was Resident Evil Fever that was like the, the, the upcoming of it. All right. But by the time Resident Evil 4 came around and is a game of the generations, right? Like an all timer video game that people to this day and especially with the remake talk about as one of the best games of all time, that was so needed for Capcom and for Resident Evil at that time. They needed a revolution, they needed something different because at that point they had had resident evil 1, 2, 3, code Veronica remake of 1. We were kind of been there Done that a bit. And then they've totally changed it all. We know what happened with five. We know what happened even worse with six. A lot to love about five, Some stuff to love about six, but, like, we can just be real about it. They needed another revolution. And then in 2017, we got that with biohazard with seven. First person, completely different type of scares. In the wake of the death of pt, we're getting this, like, kind of PT successor in a lot of ways. But is. But it's Resident Evil, right? To then go from that and have almost every year or every two years, either a new installment or a remake of one of the classics that is made even better just over and over and over.
C
Let me jump in right there. Resident Evil 7, January 2017. 86 on Metacritic right now. Resident Evil 2 remake, January 2019 and 91 on Metacritic right now. Resident Evil 3, April 2020 is 79 on Metacritic right now.Resident Evil Village, May 2021 and 84 on Metacritic right now.resident Evil 4, March and 93 on Metacritic right now.
A
Wow.
C
Roger's talking about in his opening salvo, right? This new age we're in of it. That's what you're talking about, Tim.
B
And so all of that, right? It's like, I've said this on many gamescasts and many games dailies. It's like I'm kind of Resident Evil. Doubt. It's all been amazing and so good, but it's just like, y', all, it's been a lot. This is the longest it's been since we've had any type of Resident Evil. And Even the last one re4 remake before that was the longest gap we had, not by that much. I think it was like two years instead of one year or whatever. But, like, it has been just the right amount of time for them to kind of come in and just punch you in the face if you've been paying attention and if you care about this. And I think there's this beautiful sweet spot as I can name things that I love and compare it to them. And y' all have been listening to me for a long enough time that you understand. This is the Fast 5 of Resident Evil. This is the Metal Gear Solid 4 of Resident Evil.
C
Dude, that was when I was playing this and I was geeking out about stuff. I was like, damn, this is Tim's Metal Gear Solid four. Like, he. Like. You know what I mean? Like, the kind of. What they're doing.
B
The callbacks.
C
Yeah. What they're. Well, Jesus Christ.
B
So they Nailed it. I mean, they did. They succeeded at all that stuff. So that's great. But on top of that, I just really, really, really want to commend Capcom for this being a triple A video game. This is a multi platform game. This is the first major multiplatform game that is coming out day and date on Nintendo console in over two decades since the GameCube. Like to think about how important that is and how I can't wait to hear your thoughts. But from the little I've seen, from what I've heard from people playing and it's like. And also I've been so Resident Evil up from my love of playing this game. I actually went back and played through the police department section of remake 2. I played the entire opening baker's house of Resident Evil 7 on the Switch. Yeah, two. And I played all of Remake 4. Because I'm just like, oh my God, I'm so into this right now. And I am so impressed with how beautiful and amazing these games run on the Switch. And it's like, man, this game was announced not that long ago, right? This is like, it's the perfect release cycle. They announce it, we're excited, previews super well. And now it's out and everyone's gonna get to play it. Everyone. Yeah, every gamer out there is gonna be able to play this on their console with a good version. Shout out to Capcom.
C
100%. No, you nail it, Tim. They did that. And I think. You know what's interesting before we pivot off to you know, how played on Switch or this, that the other to piggyback off of what you're saying and this run they're on, this legendary run and this being fast five and yada yada, yada. Like that's what I think is so amazing. I guess to keep driving home the adjective off of the reviewer and a shot to Barrett for adding the Tim Gettys 9.5. Phenomenal.
B
Oh, thank you.
C
It is the idea that like, you know, a lot of people I saw in the chat go, yeah, I want to know if they played in first or third or how they did that. I played by default and let it be Grace's first person and Leona's third person because that felt so right as Requiem takes everything I feel like I loved about Resident Evil 2 and puts it in there and then everything I loved about Resident Evil Biohazard and puts it in there of like, here I am in first person, freaked out of my fucking mind, terrified. This game is scary. The amount of times I am running from something and just get in, shut the door. And I'm like, damn. I feel it in my chest doing it, let alone jumping to Leon then and it becomes an action movie with one liners and fucking insane guns. And I was like, damn, they took and made I. And I am somebody who's played not. I've played a lot of Resident Evil. Honestly, all of these right as we go back through this, let alone trying them in the old days and not liking tank controls. This is my favorite Resident Evil of all time. Like they've taken everything I've loved about modern Resident Evil and the throwback to a classic Resident Evil and put it into one game. Madeline, am I crazy?
A
No, I completely agree with you. And I was going to say Tim mentioned earlier maybe being Resident Evil out, but then this reinvigorating you. So I've been playing simultaneously to playing nine. I was also playing four remake and seven all at the same time.
B
Oh my God.
A
And I'm not Resident Evil Dab. In fact, like when I finished Resident Evil 9, I was like, let's go again. Yeah, I, I actually, I popped in the Resident Evil movie and then I started a new playthrough of Resident Evil 9 because I had so much fun playing nine. Like you said, Greg, it's some of the best parts of, of my favorite Resident Evil games that I didn't end being like, okay, I'm. I'm exhausted. I'm ready, take a break. I ended reinvigorated and wanting more. And I think that's such an amazing way to end a game that is very stressful and intense and a lot of time horror games will leave you feeling a little depleted, right? You'll, you'll be like, I enjoyed that. But I'm, I'm stressed. I need a break. And that's not how I felt leaving this game. I felt invigorated, excited, and like, I need more Resident Evil in my life.
D
I felt the exact same way. I'm somebody that. I played Resident Evil 4 remake and that was my first ever experience of Resident Evil 4. And I just, I didn't understand it. I think I wasn't ready for it. Maybe I just was looking for the scares of Seven of eight what I was feeling. And I liked it, but I was like, oh, I don't love this. And I play Resident Evil 9. I'm like, I'm so fucking stupid. I get Leon, I get him on a level that is so much deeper now. And I, I want to play Resident Evil 4 again. I want to play Resident Evil 3, which I. I skipped over. That was ones I skipped over.
B
Did you play two?
D
I did play two. I did play two. I played two. Four, eight. Eight and seven and nine. So, yeah, I have. I want to go back. And immediately, as soon as I finished that, it was like, what do we do now? Like, where do we go now? Do we play three? Do we play four? I am. I am all in on Resident Evil and the fact we get a movie this year. We get a movie.
B
Zach Krer.
D
It's so exciting.
A
So exciting.
C
Yeah. I mean, back to the life I'm living. Like, when I finished it yesterday, knocked off that last 30 minutes I had, it was me like, oh, man. In a different universe. I would run it again right now. I would jump back in there and keep going. Because, of course, Resident Evils are meant to be replayed and find new things and do new stuff and bring all your cool shenanigans in there. But, yeah, just an insanely good game right here. And I'm excited for everybody to get their hands on it, let alone us. Stream it for a marathon stream. Remember Friday, everybody, we are doing a live reaction to the Pokemon God dang presents. Tim and I will be here. Roger, too. We'll be getting in here at 5:20 in the morning to go live at 6, 5, 40, so Tim can show me a bunch of hype stuff.
B
Yeah, I want to. I want to watch all the, like, the 15th anniversary, 20th anniversary, 25th anniversary, just like, their little, like, hype intro things. Because, like, I. I love those things. I go back to them often. Just like, make me feel something. But now that you're so into Pokemon
C
now, number one Pokemon fan of the
B
company, I want to like, you know what I mean?
D
He doesn't need education.
C
I'm rewriting the rulebook. We'll react to that. We'll then do the Gamescast post show. We will then start my first ever playthrough of Leaf Green. Then it'll be kind of funny games daily. And after that, which sounds like a long day, but I'm talking 11am we will start the marathon stream for Resident Evil Requiem, where you will watch Andy and Blessing playthrough for the first time.
B
Dude, I got emotional. I mean, real talk. I don't know that I've ever been more excited for kind of funny content, like, having played this game now knowing. I mean, I also just saw some of the things that Roger and Kevin have planned.
D
Like, y' all ain't ready.
B
Hilarious. Uh, it's gonna look so damn good. But this, this is going to be without any hyperbole. I think the greatest reaction stream kind of funny's ever made. Like, Blessing and Andy are gonna fucking shit themselves.
A
Do you think they'll quit the company?
B
Real talk, Y' all are gonna see it live.
D
Blessing was talking so much shit like,
B
oh, I don't get scared of video games.
D
Yeah, watch it. Everybody clip that and then clip what happens.
B
Oh, man, it's. It is going to be the amount of clips we're going to get from this. Like, you're going to want to be there live. For sure. That's. I'm just going to have it on all weekend. I can't wait.
C
Tomorrow, of course. Kind of funny. We'll also do a gamescast. Let's play. Or no, I'm sorry, gamescast plays, which of course our editorial project. It's a stream we do, but you can get on your gamescast feeds. It will be myself and I believe Mike. Is that right? And it's going to be me showing you the Switch version and me jumping into the PlayStation 5 Pro version for the first time, going back and forth and going to it, which I think is a natural segue to talking about playing on the Switch. And something you said, Tim. Fucking shout out to Capcom you. I really. I understand this is a way too broad of a brush to paint with, but in reality, nobody has a fucking excuse. Nobody has an excuse to put out a Switch to game that just looks and runs like trash. Like, oh, well, it's less powerful hardware. This thing looks great on the Nintendo Switch 2. I'm sure. If there aren't already. I'm not even sure what the embargo is for going in and doing comparisons. Yes, it is not the PlayStation 5 Pro version. It's not the PC version. It definitely. I thought in outdoor areas it was a little bit more evident. And then obviously the bigger the screen got too, where I'm playing in bed, like, this is great. Playing on the, like the 60 inch I have in the living room. This is good. And then when I blew it up to 80 inch, like, all right, well, now I'm seeing a bit more here and there. But none of that got in the way of performance. None of that got in the way of scares. None of that got in the way of immersion. Like, it. I was so impressed. And even Jen was sitting there watching me when I started it. You know, there was two awesome moments. I felt where we start the game, we're playing it on Switch. It's on the TV and they say something and Jen goes like, oh my God, the writing. And I'm like, yeah, it's Resident Evil. And she's like, is Resident Evil known for bad writing? I was like, babe, the Jill Sandwich stuff? Yeah, this is like, it's a schlocky horror movie, you know what I mean? This is before we ever get to one liners from Leon, but even after she insults the writing immediately she's like, damn, the leather looks great. We were walking and it's raining. It's like this game fucking sings on the Nintendo Switch too. And again, going anywhere in that portability of popping in, pop it out. I had a great time playing it on this device, let alone the fact as I alluded to in one of the games dailies or whatever we've done during review period. Tim, I'm not gonna say I'm a changed man, but those fucking Nintendo Switch to Pro Controller back buttons.
B
Oh, it's happening.
C
I'm not a back button guy. I've given away every elite controller I've gotten for PlayStation or Xbox because I don't need them. But it was here of like, oh man, I'm opening my inventory in my map so much. Oh man, I hate coming up to the plus in mind. I was like, wait a second, I went in one, you know, hold the button just to bring up the side menu, assign them. And then bam, bam. And it was to the point of like, when Jen's like, can you play in bed tonight? I was like, I guess so. Stuck's not playing with us, ladies and gentlemen. We got them.
B
We got him. We got him. You know, I've. I'm a Nintendo fan my whole life. I want to see them win. I have been so upset with so many decisions they've made and how underpowered things are and all this stuff. This is just such. I feel so good about this and I feel so good, especially after the last six months of like. Or maybe it's been more time, doesn't matter to me anymore. Before the Switch came out, Switch two came out. Yeah, I was so gung ho of like, they're going to do it, they're going to pull this off. And then we're like, oh, the Dev kids aren't out and all this stuff. And I just started being so hurt in my soul. I'm just like, oh, don't fuck this up. And it's like in some ways they didn't and it's taken longer than I want it to, but it's like I have a feeling that Resident Evil Requiem is going to sell gangbusters on the Switch to granted install base. I'm not saying it's going to outsell the other consoles, but like, especially when you think about what's even out on Nintendo right now, it's like Nintendo gamers out there, the Switch to only owners, which despite what a lot of people this, not this panel, but at this desk have been saying as I've been listening and I'm screaming at my goddamn tv. There are so many people that only have Nintendo consoles and do not have PCs or PlayStations. Nintendo is unique in that way. They are going to eat with this game. They're going to love this game. They're going to sing its praises differently than other people are. I'm very excited to see it. None of that matters for this review.
A
Eat.
D
I like that.
C
Hungry While we're here, obviously it looks great in the Pro. Madeline, you thought it looked fine in your base PS5. There wasn't an issue where you're like, oh, man, I'm getting a lesser version here.
A
No, I thought it looked gorgeous and I am a very stickler for aesthetics and graphics.
C
Okay.
A
I think it looked really beautiful. I mean, they always have impressed me with their lighting. I think lighting is a really important aspect of horror, specifically working with the shadows and everything. Water looked great. Everything. I thought, yeah, the textures of leather, skin. Yeah, everything looked great to me. I had no issues in fidelity at all.
D
It looks so good that when Tim, when I said, oh, I played on PS5, he's like, base PS5. I was like, oh, yeah, there is a pro. Because I thought that, that this was the pinnacle of place. It. Because it looks so good. Like, yeah, the reflections, the. The ray tracing. There's one moment later on the game where there's a lot of glass going on there and I'm like, holy shit, this is on a PS5 right now. It is so gorgeous, man.
B
Yeah, I played on PS5 Pro and I've been a huge fan of the RE engine forever. Like, these games just look so incredible. And I Even back on PS4, just base PS4, I've been blown away by, like, how scary and real these games can look. And like, obviously there is still that, like, not even Uncanny Valley. There's a look to the RE Engine games. There's a look to the faces, there's a look to all that stuff. But it's like, to me, it's the combination of technical prowess and art style. Like, we always talk about Nintendo having these amazing art styles, like Maybe the power's not there. This is an example of both of those things meeting each other in a way that is makes the game scarier. And that's the point, right? Like we've talked about. I remember even on Our review of RE2 Remake back in the day, Greg like talking about how the reflections on the water, the lighting coming through and like bouncing off the water and like all of that stuff, that's what created the atmosphere to make it as scary. So that when something jumps out at you, it hits extra hard. Right. And I feel like this is the best the game's ever looked like by far. I think that it in first person with as grace is like kind of unbelievable how. How damn good it looks. There was a lot of shimmering with PlayStation 5 because of pisser. That's just how this is going to go.
C
Yeah.
B
And I can't wait to when the game comes out, get it on PC and actually see what it could have looked like. But one upside to playing on PS5 is their Dolby Atmos support is incredible. And I'm in a very privileged position that I do have a home theater. This is my new standard when it comes to 3D Dolby Atmos surround. Maybe it was not Atmos, but 3D spatial audio. God of War Valhalla was the old winner for me and it still is absolutely spectacular. But positioning of audio and sounds didn't matter as much in that game. This game is made for that and it is so terrifying and so pinpoint accurate. Dial in some settings. I was having a couple issues I had to work through with Greg. But once I got that done, I can't believe how good things sound. And I would not recommend anyone play it that way because it was very, very, very, very scary.
D
Even to like pull it back. Like you have a sound whole surround sound system. I have a sound bar. Like, even then it was like, okay, well, I have to get accurate. It was right where I'm sneaking around. It's like, oh, if I hear this, oh, I have like a few meters away, I can get around it. And it was like really trusting the audio in this game and realizing how good it was. Even from the highest level, it seems like to the lowest level it works incredible.
A
Yeah, I was going to agree. I only have a sound bar and there's times where maybe something's above you and I would reflexively like look up like this and be like, okay. It's just in the game, the sound goes so far with the horror element. I think everyone understands that sound is really integral. But there were the way that they use sound. There was a section of this game that was one of the scariest sections I've ever played in the basement. And I was actually, I had chills, like I was shivering playing this game. And I, I, I went and spoke to my husband. He's like, are you okay? And I'm like, yeah, I'm good. I just need a break.
B
I had to take some breaks with this too.
C
Yeah, I think again, to call it out, like, Grace is so scary. The sections you're playing as her in that first person being a, you know, you're not Leon the action hero. This is your first rodeo with all these zombies and T viruses and whatnot. Like, so creepy and to the point that we're talking about with sound. It rings true with Switch and me just playing with AirPods where it would be, you know, in bed, be fucking even creepier. And it would be, wait, what was that? Look up, look over there. Try to find and track what's making that noise. Like it works. And I think that does really drive it home.
B
I just want to go off for a second just talking about, like, because I feel like we're talking around the game a lot. So I'm going to continue to do that just a little bit more. But in context of this game, like we keep saying, it's kind of, oh, this is some of the best that Ari has ever had to offer and like bringing up the comparisons like Metal Gear Solid or Fast Five, specifically, like those things when we're talking about like the best Resident Evil games. Like, there is a common consensus, I would say out there, that we don't need to order them at all.
C
Sure.
B
Remake one, remake to remake four. Right. Those are kind of the understood top three games and they all offer very different things. I think that this game offers, if not the best of all of those, like, the things we like most about all of those in a incredibly paced, equally scary. For different reasons experience that those games do. And because of that, I feel like the pacing of this game is masterclass. Like, I feel like I'm always doing something that I want to do and it never, I want to say in this game, it never outstays its welcome. There was a couple times where I'm going to think I'm like, okay, got to turn on some generators. Like, I've been here before. The section lasts just as long as it needed to for me to be like, oh, I had that type of horror experience. And it takes me back to Resident Evil Village Which I think that the biggest fault of that game is it was a jack of all trades. It tried so many different styles of horror that I feel like it didn't end up having its own identity. Kind of felt like a greatest hits of horror as opposed to a greatest hits of Resident Evil. This is a greatest hits of Resident Evil, but I don't even want to just like let it end there. I do think that this game is a game of its own. The fact that these zombies, the T virus infected zombies, have memories of their past.
A
Yeah.
B
And the way that that plays out in this game creates so many mini set pieces and encounter moments in both the horror gray sections and the more action focused where the fear is more based on Panic Leon sections.
C
Yeah.
B
Where I think there are more memorable moments in this game than any of the other Resident Evils. Like you go back and it's like there's so many moments we talk about in so many of the games for great reason. But I feel like I'm going to remember the chef, I'm going to remember the, the cleaner. I'm going to remember that there's like all the, the. The opera singer singing lady.
A
Yeah.
B
There's just like all these little things that it's like in other games that could have just been, oh, we're introducing a new enemy type and from now on you're going to be facing these bigger guys. But instead it's like there's these, these like added elements that aren't just the low end zombies and aren't the Mr. X chasing you, you know, whatever, like nemesis checking chasing you, whatever. It's kind of just this beautiful thing that kind of feels like it's growing with you.
C
Right. That was the thing about it where like when I missed the Resident Evil direct or whatever it was and I was talking to you about it or somebody about it and like, oh yeah, well they, you know, they talked about the zombies having jobs or whatever. And like there's a singer they introduced and she's like the witch in Left 4 Dead. I was like, oh, okay, cool. And so to see her in there, I was like, okay, fine. And then later on you're like playing through and it's like I found notes about that person. I was like, oh, like that's such a smart way of introducing what's going on and, and paying attention to why they're like this this time around.
D
And it makes it even scarier that they aren't like the mini bosses. Like they aren't like the big bosses there. It's just. You're walking around, it's like, oh, shit. Like, this is. This is just here in this world, living there before I was even here, this just existed. And it's just. Yeah, that level of that. And also, I think the thing that really pushes the pacing here is the split between Grace and Leon for me, where it's like, if it was all Grace, I'd be like, yes, it's a great game. But like, having like the. The. The turn of being like, man, I'm so fucking scared. And I feel so empowered and of. With Leon and seeing his perspective of it all and him being able to mow through people, it's.
C
It is come back to the same place you were just in that you were exactly right.
D
Like, my. My favorite comparison here is where Grace's character, where she, you know, she shoots somebody and she has the ability to melee somebody, and her melee is like, push. She pushes somebody and she runs past him. And that's the way that you have to get through a lot of enemies here because we have limited ammo. She is not very strong. And then you go to Leon and his melee is a hatchet, and he explodes people's brains. And it is such a fun juxtaposition between them. And again, one that I was skeptical of because I didn't love four as much. And I thought, oh, maybe it's gonna feel like two games. Two separate games. No, it does feel like one big experience that is connected. It does not feel like, hey, we're just sewing together two separate video games in one.
A
Well, yeah, to speak on pacing, like the best horror has highs and lows. You can really only experience a high if you have a low. And the gray sections last just a little bit longer, I think, than you want them to. Just like the tiny bit so that you're really uncomfortable. And then right as you're like, I don't think I can take this anymore. My heart is stressed. You get a Leon section and he says something so hilarious or does something so crazy that you laugh and all that tension is released and you're like, okay, we're with Leon. We're going to bingo night or whatever, and we're just having a great time. And. And it lets you pull your defenses down again, and then they throw you right back into something awful and you've let your guard down, so it impacts you as. As it would if you just had started playing. Whereas I think in some horror games, the tension is just ratcheting, ratcheting, ratcheting, ratcheting. So much that when you get to a crazy boss, you're kind of like, yeah, I kind of expected it to get worse from here. I know that there's something bad coming on, but the ups and downs, I think, are really masterful in that pacing and keeping you engaged and always guessing about what you're about to experience.
B
We've used the word empowered a bunch of times and talking about the Leon sections, and I think it's very true that especially in comparison to Grace, where it is this like barry. Resident Evil 7, specifically the beginning of seven coded. But. But I think it's very important to point out, like, this game is very more so than I think any of the other games. It's grounded in, like. And it goes back to Racket City, T Virus, that type of those elements that this. This franchise has gotten crazy. Right. Started crazy, but really, really got crazy.
C
Yeah.
D
Yeah.
C
It's got.
B
I. Sometimes I don't love it when it's just like. It just kind of feels like they're throwing nonsense at you. Right.
C
Sure.
B
I like when it does feel like. All right, I understand the origins of this. When the notes on the wall feel like they're actually all telling the same story as opposed to, like just bunch of Easter eggs or references to things that happened before. This game has that in spades. But they're all referencing, like, the same events, and I feel like they're kind of really did a good job of like, making this a smaller story in a lot of ways so that you can actually follow along with it. And so because of that, you're getting the. In every sense of the term classic Resident Evil. We're talking zombies. We're talking T Virus zombies coming at you. But you're now playing it in the Resident Evil 7 first person style as Grace, which I think is. I think that the gray sections are easily the best first person Resident Evil has to offer. Like, I think by far. Oh, sorry, just. But then. And they're so scary and they're so tense. When you get to the Leon parts. Yes, you're empowered. Yes. You have crazier weapons and all that stuff. I think it serves so many amazing purposes because often I think in every Resident Evil, you start off underpowered, you end up with rocket launchers. Right. I love how different Grace and Leon are where. I'm not saying where characters end up with their weapons and stuff, but in terms of the spirit of it, they really feel like the most different dual protagonist we've seen in the franchise. Because normally you get it and you Play through one scenario, you play through the other. Maybe one has more inventory, maybe whatever. These have completely different inventory systems. These have different economy, like, entirely different gameplay styles to back up these different ways of action. Horror versus, like, survival horror. And I love that with Leon, sure, you are able to mow down the enemies, but when you mow down the enemies, guess what? You shoot the guy with the chainsaw. The chainsaw drops. All of a sudden. The chainsaw is now a factor you have to play with in the room because it's spinning on the floor.
C
There's a lot always coming at you too. I don't know. I'm running away from this thing, backing away.
B
The stress and panic in the action is just so beautifully balanced. Because they went overboard with Resident Evil 5 and especially Resident Evil 6. Resident Evil 4 had that, like, real. I mean, it's a masterpiece. We know what Resident Evil 4 is.
C
Yeah.
B
But I feel like this. The overwhelming, like, there are encounters in this when you're playing as Leon where you're just overwhelmed with enemies and it's fucking awesome. And you're like, I don't have enough bullets. I don't like, oh, my God, I'm Leon, but I'm running out of things. It's so, so, so good. And I think that it's really in that opposition to the gray stuff that it just always is feeling like there's highest galore.
A
Yes.
C
Yeah. This works for both of them. But specifically what you're talking about when Leon has a million enemies in the room, right. And you only have so much ammo or so many guns or whatever it does then become this really home alone, like, playground where there are objects to pick up and hurl at them that you run to and you can't grab them until it's like. It'll have a big Ghostbusters nose symbol on it until it's like, oh, here we go. Now I can actually use it to knock somebody to their knees, to run up, to hatchet them in the fucking head to pick up more shotgun shells, to turn, like, the fucking vibe of that. Also then Grace having a, as you're saying, survival horror playground aspect of like, well, here's a distraction object or here's a place to hide. And can you get them to go that way while you go this way and chill for a second to get back there and that constant, like, heart in your chest of like, okay, can I activate this thing before they get on me? Because that was when it was like, I only have the one bullet and I have the shove. But that ain't gonna get it done. Oh, that ain't gonna get it done.
B
Speaking of one bullet. Oh, the only bullet that matters. They introduced this so early. Like it's.
A
Yes, say it.
B
Requiem.
A
So.
D
What a cool name.
B
Leon has a gun called the Requiem.
A
It's so badass.
B
It's so fucking badass. And holy shit, it feels good. Maybe the most trite thing in video games I could possibly say. Do you remember the first time you threw the goddamn axe?
A
Yes.
B
In God of War. Oh, my God. I'll never forget the first time I shot the Requiem. Okay.
A
That. It feels so good for me.
C
It was such a great weapon that it was one of those weapons that I was like, I put you in the box.
B
Yeah.
C
I will come to you when I need you. Like on my last leg. And I know I need something to get. I'll get that one.
D
Yeah.
A
I was. I was saving all my resources just trying to craft little measly bullets for the Requiem. I was like, none of this other stuff matters. I need to make more bullets for my Requiem gun.
C
Amazing. I want one super chat before we go to ads here. Okay. Jizzle dupes, super chats and says considering it's probably the agreed upon scariest segment in the series, would you say there are segments scarier than or as scary as House of Benvenito in Resident Evil 8?
B
I mean, that's my thing is like when I said that this is. It's the scariest. The first person to spend. I am directly thinking of. That was the thing to beat before for me. Yeah, that was terrifying. And it was terrifying because it was standalone, it was out of nowhere, and it was a type of horror that they were just like going full bore into. I feel like this game has like. I don't want to be too exaggerative about this. I feel like it has like four or five sections that are all different. Different locations, different styles. Maybe just like slight little tweaks of like how the gameplay is going. But like even just the pacing of it of some of them are more like the classic. You're turned around the corner, you're backtracking a lot in an area, and then the third time you do it, you get a scare. Some of them are more sit and wait. It really is stealth. You know, there's just so many change ups. But yeah, no, there are. There are many scary moments in this game and a lot of them are in that the first person thing. And I think that they do out, out scare that section or at least match that section.
D
I agree.
C
Okay, well, I want to talk more about first and third person when we get back. But first I'll remind you that we couldn't do this without your support. I'm just itching to talk about stuff, but what are you guys itching to talk about now? Now that we're.
D
Did anyone change their perspective? No, I didn't. I just stayed first person, Grace and then third person Leon. Anyone else?
A
I tried Leon in first person because I was curious with the more action based how I would like it. I did not, I didn't love playing it that way, but it is scary. Like the first person perspective is definitely scarier. I stayed Grace in first person because that's. It feels like obviously you have the option. Anyone can play however they want. It feels intentional the way that 100% like first person, Grace, third person Leon. I think if you are maybe someone who loves Resident Evil and maybe it's like a little bit more on the scaredy cat side, playing Grace and third person could help a lot with that for sure.
C
Getting them spin the camera around and see what's behind you and do that stuff. But yeah, I think it takes away from what it is. I was the same way of playing it. I was like, like, ah, this is on purposeful choice. This is how it's meant to be played.
B
Yeah, I mean they, they spell that out for you. I played the entire game through the way that they kind of intended with Grace in first person and Leon in third person. But I did play around with it quite a bit just to kind of get the different feels. And yeah, it demonstrably third person is less scary than. Than first. It's like it in both scenarios, Leon and Grace and that's just kind of how that works. But I actually think that it's kind of nice like to give people the option if they do want to tone it down. We will not be allowing Blessing and Eddie to tone it down. At least I hope we're not.
C
We'll see.
B
We'll see. Oh yeah. I don't know what's going on, but they need to play it in first person. But yeah, what I do again want to commend Capcom for, and this is another thing of just like how many of these games they've done recently and this kind of being the real culmination of what they've learned from all of it. Being able to switch that stuff on the fly is so cool. Like I love that throughout the game, if you wanted to switch the perspectives, you can with no penalties. Like that's just stuff that I always care about and I feel like a lot of people don't put that extra effort in. And I, I just, I'm really, really impressed with what they, they did here. Options wise. Going through all the settings, I was like, yeah, this is kind of what I want to see here.
D
Anyone try gyro aiming? Because that's what I did. Oh, it was really good. And it's awesome. It's a great. It's a great way to play that game on the PS5, especially because it's not too, like, intense. So you can just. Just really get that, like, minute details and then just get the headshots. It's really fun. Gyro cheating either.
B
Gyro aiming has great stuff. I mean, I can only speak to this on the dual sense and the switch to Pro controller and I guess the switch to itself, like, it's come such a long way that before, if you've written it off of, like, I would never play a game that way. It is so, so good for games that do need just, like, slower pace kind of aiming. Incredible stuff.
C
So none of us gave it a 10 out of 10. And so we've been talking about how amazing this game is and great it is. I'd like to hear about things that didn't as well for you.
D
It was, it was so. I'm sorry.
C
No, no, you go. Yeah.
D
For me it was so interesting because, like, I. For me, it was like, in the. Probably the first two quarters of the game, I was like, man, this is like a 10 out of 10. Like, and then I. As I got to the ending, I started realizing, like, there hasn't. There's really a puzzle in this game that like, like itch. Meg, scratch this itch for puzzles. I like puzzles in Resident Evil. I just don't think there is one here that like, really stood out for me. Maybe, maybe there is. There's a few there that just, like, you go through. But, like, there wasn't like, the Resident Evil puzzle for me in that one. And there's also a few, like, boss fights, I would say, that were pretty disappointing.
C
That's where I would. My, my. If a criticism I would have is that, yeah, all the boss fights, I thought, didn't live up to everything else surrounding them. I thought they were all pretty, like, okay, yeah, shoot that thing. Shoot that thing.
B
We're out of here. I liked a fair bit of the boss fights, like, quite a bit specifically compared. I don't think the Resident Evil games have the best boss fights. Sure. And I do think that this one, I, I think has some of my favorite ones. Having said that, my problem with the boss fights are there's at least one, if not two, that are literally just boss fights from before. Like, might be a different enemy, might be whatever. But I'm like, I've done. I've done this before. I've done exactly this before. So I was a little let down by that. The puzzle thing.
D
Yeah.
B
I'm on the complete other side of you, and I feel like this might be. This, I know, is something that divides the Resident Evil fan base to some extent. I'm so happy they don't waste your time with dumbass puzzles. Like, I don't think Resident Evil games have good puzzles. Like, I feel like most of the time it's just like, here's a bunch of random shit. Find the other corresponding random shit. I like that this game is just like, we're going to cut the fat out of it. Right. And there are a couple opportunities that I think they could have went a little further. But I'm so happy they didn't. Like, my review score is higher because this game didn't waste my time. Because again, I'm really thinking back to any of the Resident Evils. I've never been impressed with one of the puzzles.
D
See, it's less about being impressed with it. I kind of like the busy work of some of these puzzles, to be honest, because it's. It adds the fear to it of like, I'm running around trying to figure out what the this thing is.
C
Turn around.
D
Oh, it was actually behind it the entire time. Like, they do streamline all of this so much, especially when it comes to the map and everything. They tell you, hey, go here, do the thing. It's super easy to figure out, but I actually do miss getting lost. The only time I got lost, I was talking to Tim about this. I put one, one key item in my item box for like two and a half hours. And I was like, where the is this thing? I was right in front of me. But yeah, I, I do like getting lost and figuring out those puzzles, even if they're. They aren't like the greatest puzzles in the world. I do like that. I think that is a core part of, of, of Resident Evil that I'm. I was missing a little bit here.
C
Madeline, what about you?
A
Yeah, I like the puzzles. I, I felt like in Requiem, it felt like the perfect balance for me because the puzzles were integrated into the level design, so everything you needed to do kind of looped. I love, like, when I played RE2 Remake, the loop of that game is so satisfying. Right? Like, you keep going down the same hallways doing different things, like looping back. And I'm doing the same thing here in this location as Grace. Like, okay, we already went here, but we have to Go back here and a little bit further for this thing and then loop back and it's this sort of very satisfying cycle of same place, but different purpose this time. And I didn't feel like I missed a lot, but there were things that maybe I did miss. And that. That feels like the most satisfying thing where like you can get 80% of it if you sort of stick along and are paying attention. And then if you want to go that extra mile like, like for the next 20, you really start searching. And that's part of where my. My high game clock too is like. I'm like, okay, go down this hallway, run back to the savior, go down this hallway, run back to the save room. I'm like a chronic savers, especially when
C
I'm chronic savers unite. I was the exact same way. I was like, I was playing at one point. I'm like, oh, man, it's interesting. I'm playing this like a roguelite or I'm doing different runs. All right, I'm going from the room to this thing. I just got to get that thing on back to the room. I gotta go to the save, save, save. I've seen my save count clicking up
B
when I get back.
A
I haven't been to like the west wing yet, so I'm going to go over there, just like, look, peek around, see what going on, run back, make a strategy, look at the map, be like, I'm going to roll around here.
B
Staying on that for a second.
C
So this is.
B
This isn't my negatives yet. This is just more like the glowing positives of this all.
C
So hard not to.
B
A big thing about Resident Evil that makes it so good and so special, especially the great ones, are the locations and how amazing the level design is. Like some of the highs, obviously, we talk about the RPD in Resident Evil 2, and I think that the. The opening section in this game is pretty quick. But like the. The. The first real meaty section in the game. I think that it's as good as the Raccoon City Police Department. I think that it's so beautifully designed with the scares, with the. The notes, with the patterns, with every single, like, I don't even want to call them puzzle, but like the items you're unlocking, whatever Resident Evil I personally think works best when it's functioning as a Metroidvania. And I think that this game in those sections is an incredible Metroidvania where you are going through the same hallways but for a different reason now and not having the puzzle. The.
C
The.
B
Okay. Puzzles to get in the way. I thought really went a long way because I feel like those moments that were then replaced by the more I'll call them set PC zombies, former lives with Jobs type stuff.
D
Yeah.
B
So I was like really, really, really into that. And it's also the Metroidvania thing is fun because it works both ways. Like, I replayed Metroid Fusion not too long ago and like they have like the X parasite or whatever. Sam. It's like running after you. I'm like, it's just Mr. X. I don't know why I never put that together. They share a lot of DNA. That's very, very cool. But the locations in this game are so varied. I don't think they're all the best things ever. Like, it's not just like 10 out 10 perfect across the board. One of my negatives, I guess I would say is there is one of the bigger, more substantial areas in this game is an 8 out of 10. And I really wish it was a 10 out of 10. And 8 out of 10 is still great, but like, that is. It takes it down a little bit for me. But I think that the. It's not just like, oh, how cool is the location. It's what you're doing the location. And is this a open location? Is this linear? Is this dark? Is this light? Is this underground? Is this a lot of vertical movement? Like, I think this game has so much variation and all that stuff that I'm very, very, very impressed by. But to get to the more my negatives of it of why.
C
Well, even before then, I want to jump in and say back to this in the Metroidvania part of it. Again, one of the reasons I started using those buttons was I was using my map so much because it was so joyous to, oh, there's a door. I'll open that door and open up a new and run in there and then run around the room and run out and open the map and be like, all right, there was bullets in there. I go back and get that, then open up and this door is going to open over there and da, da, da. Like, again, that's what I remember so well from Resident Evil 2 remake, was how much I loved that map and how much that opened up the Raccoon City pd, Right? It really was, oh, man, I want to live in this place and really get to know it. And this game nails that.
B
Yeah. And you know, you saying that too and like the going back and forth in the hallways and how they somehow make this Relatively small area feel fresh for hours is there's constantly something new they're throwing at you. And us talking about how, wow, this really is the best of the best Resident Evils. Like one of the best Resident Evils that doesn't get talked about a lot because it came out in 2002 is Resident Evil 1 Remake. And I think that it is the only game that is not in line with the rest of the remakes because it's a different playstyle and it. Does it hold up today? Yes, a thousand percent. Oh, my God, absolutely. But it is traditional Resident Evil. It's tank controls. You can play it with analog in the newer version if you want, but it's still pre rendered backgrounds, the camera's still shifting in ways that if you played the other Resident Evil remakes, it doesn't play like that. So it's hard to recommend it. Well, if you love this, you're gonna love that. It doesn't work that way. But Resident Evil remake, where it started it all, the remake is like so fantastic. But one thing it added over the first game is a thing called Crimson Heads where the zombies that you kill sometimes come back even stronger and scarier than ever. This game has a take on that and that is so cool because it allows an extra level of. Oh, man, I've been here before, I know I'm safe here. No, you're not. You know, and I think that, like having that level of new enemy types and new ideas and new scare factors come into play and then the ways you need to deal with those from a gameplay mechanic of the. We didn't talk yet about the.
A
Yeah, that's what I was gonna bring
B
up where it's like Grace has this like economy of like, you. You like get infected blood and you can kind of like use it to craft different things. There's just so much things to do that are like, oh, I want to do this. Like, I wanted to continue going back and saving you. Bringing up the roguelike run thing. It's like this run, I'm trying to get all of this. This run, I'm trying to get all that.
C
I love that.
A
Yeah, well, and I think that's like another aspect of the puzzle I would say is like her collecting the infected blood because that's your resource for basically everything. Like, you can make bullets from it, you can make health from it, you can make these injectors that do permanently take down zombies. So if the one is giving you particular trouble, you can sneak up behind it and permanently remove it from the Map. But there is only a certain amount of blood there that you can use. So you do have to really be strategic about what your sort of play style is. I know Greg and I were talking earlier, he was kind of doing a more stealth approach for sure. And I was like, I need to kill a lot of things so I can take their blood and make things with it.
B
Yeah, yeah.
A
And so finding that balance of like, if you do want to be more, throw a bottle, sneak around, then you're gonna have less resources to play with in theory versus, yeah. Taking out more of the enemies and then having a little bit more resources to play with.
D
And it's typical Resident Evil fashion. It's not just the blood. You need something else on top of the blood in order to craft the things that you want. Right. So yeah, there's a lot of blood in the game, the way I was playing it, at least. And I, of course I needed that one other thing, scraps or whatever. And I was like, it's need some scraps to get some bolts.
B
Yeah. So for me, the, the 9.5 instead of a 10. The. The little bit there is. At the end of the day, I've done a lot of this before. And at the end of the day, a lot of this stuff, story beats set pieces, enemies you're fighting, character moments that you're having. Like, we have seen this before in some ways, like literally, like we're literally in the same place or we're literally doing things, fighting. It's just like, okay. And I think that because of that, there's a freshness that'll never be there. And I feel like there's kind of a ceiling of where it can be. And on top of that, when you lean so much on nostalgia, I. I feel like it creates this double edged sword of me being like, I can't believe how far they went. I can't believe how much they paid off and how impressed I am with the little things they did. But then I'm like, oh, but they didn't do that. And they could have done this. And oh, they got so close with this thing. Like, you brought up the Resident Evil movie and I. This isn't spoiler because they don't do it. There's a hallway at one point that I'm like, fucking lasers come out.
A
I know, I said the same thing. I was like, this would. I would. I think I would actually physically cry.
B
Yeah. So it's like, you know, dumb things like that. But it's like, it really does, I think, kind of like, like, like take it, take it down just a notch critically. And also just with the franchise, when we're talking about the ninth numbered entry, that's not even including the spin, the canon spin offs and all the story that this game and franchise and characters have had, it just gets so convoluted. And especially when you just have to deal with what the decisions of the past, it can get hard. And I feel like this game, for the most part, I was riveted by the story. It's simple, it's zombie fair. It is what it is. But I was like, I. There's a mystery here. They're dealing with the elements I love the most about the Raccoon City era of Resident Evil. Like, all this stuff speaks to me so much. And about halfway through a game there was a story choice that I'm like, that makes no sense to me at all. I know these characters. I just played as these characters. Why would they do that? Yeah. And by the time you get to the end, I'm like, it made up. Made it up for me. I really, really love how this game comes together. Like, really love. But I do think the story just gets kind of wackadoo in a way that I'm like, ah, man, like we were on such a good path, like, but they had to dial, they had to connect. They had to like do the Resident Evil stuff. And it's like that to me is it's tough to like criticize a game for being what it is. That's kind of where I'm at.
C
Fair enough. Fair enough. Let's get into another super chat here, Tristan. Super chat and says, I haven't played a Resident Evil before, but nine looks amazing. Should I play four, seven, eight first? And I think it's criminal not to put two on there.
D
You got to play two.
B
I mean, this is clearly two, four, nine are a semi trilogy. It's the Leon story.
C
Yeah, of course.
B
I feel like you're not going to be mad if you, if you do that.
A
Run.
B
Having said that, I do think that this game works standalone. All these games, you're going to be like, what the fuck are they talking about? What is, who are these people? What is this group like? Like you're never gonna fully understand what, what's going on.
C
Yeah.
B
So just jumping into this, you're gonna have a lot of questions. But guess what? Greg played all these games. I guarantee you, after we get off this, like, if I asked him who was this guy, he'd be like, oh, fuck, I don't I don't know.
D
I have so many questions.
C
There was one guy who popped up. I'm like, is that who I. Is that it was?
D
Okay, I would suggest you play two. I feel like that's like, not required reading, but, like, just play it. Play that one. And then you.
C
I. I think, yeah. Tim nails it. I think to.
D
For.
C
To understand Leon, who I feel like I understand to. For this.
D
Yeah.
C
Like, I really do. Because four even is such a awesome. Like, oh, man, remember the rookie? Remember the kid who didn't know what the fuck was going on? To see him now after the president's daughter, you're like, damn, he's fucking awesome. And then to get here, be like, wow, you are full blown in a fucking movie universe. I love it.
D
He's incredible.
A
See, it's interesting because I feel like. I agree. I think you should play Leon's whole story. But this version of Leon and nine, I feel like is the most grounded. You mentioned this earlier, Tim, and he still has his one liners and stuff, but I, I felt myself feeling an empathy for Leon that I've never had before.
C
Oh, sure. He.
A
He's so like, contemplative and emotional in a way I've never seen before. Like, he does his one liners. But there are real sections where I'm like, damn. Like Leon's really reckoning with his entire history with Raccoon City and everything he's been for in like a genuine way. That, that, that kind of took me aback because Resident Evil is so zany that I felt there were actual moments of sort of contemplation that I wasn't expecting, where it kind of just took me by surprise.
D
Even though he does the one liners, maybe it's just the context of the game. It feels like there's a little sadness behind those one liners. Like he's in a movie. He's in a movie and he's like an actor and he's like, oh, I have to do these one liners just to kind of get through it. But it's like, no.
C
Elevated the.
D
Yeah, exactly.
A
It's different now.
C
In line with this. And I'll talk to you. Madeline Kobe says in a super chat. Does this entry see the best quips to date from Leon? Tim's looking through it.
B
No, no.
C
What do you think, Tim? No, I asked me.
B
Yeah, that's. That's why I stopped myself.
A
I don't know if this has. It's hard to say. Like, I laughed the most at Leon in this.
C
Me too.
A
But I don't think, like, so everyone references the bingo line. There's a couple of things. I don't know if there's going to be anything like, where you're like, oh, where is everyone going? Bingo. But he does. He consistently makes me laugh every time he speaks.
D
Yeah, for sure.
C
He crushed.
B
It's interesting because, like, Resident Evil 4 OG was like, way more over the top goofy and like, the lines were even more crazy. And then the remake dialed that down just a little bit, but it's still it. He was still Leon. I think this goes back to my criticism of like, a lot of these are just like, he did it again. You know what I mean? There's a lot of repeat lines. There's a lot of like, references to things he's done or said before that. I think because of that, the novelty of it's gone. But, like, there is a level of like, you just want to see him play the hits. You know what I mean? Like, you just deliver. And. And I think that on top of that, like, it's the lines. It's. It's not the one liners, it's what the one liners are reacting to. And I think that his action set pieces and like the gameplay things that he does in this game are so incredible that his one liners reacting to those things is like, like, okay, yeah, there's a lot more like Uncharted in this game.
C
Yeah, for sure.
B
Yeah.
C
I wish it was a spoiler cast. Oh, I know.
D
It has so much timid said.
C
When I forget, one of the times I drop something off, he's like, where are you? And I update. He's like, oh, man, you're about to get to a set piece. Yeah, and I got to a fucking set piece.
D
While we're talking about Leon, I want to talk about Grace. And like, I wanted to kind of get your vibes on Grace as a character, right?
C
Because for me, why does she have to do that? Every fucking line? She is. No, no, I understand. You're scared. I understand why are we doing this direction. And it's not that you're a stutterer, you're not a stutterer.
D
That's what I felt in the beginning. I was like, okay, they're really hamming this up that she's the worst FBI agent of all time. Right? She apparently is in the FBI, but she doesn't know how to, how to do CPR correctly. She doesn't know anything. But then I'm like, fuck, this is like the camp of Ethan that I love of like Ethan Winters and I adored, I love how fucking awful that character is. And I think that that is what for me, Grace fills that void. So yeah, I, I, it is out, out there. It is insane. But I don't know, I kind of liked her.
C
I liked her.
B
Y' all turn it apart. I'm being torn apart in so many, so many different ways that I, I disagree with you. First off, I had no problem with Grace's performance if this is a Resident Evil game. I liked her. I like that she is this like very different and like capable to an extent. But she's in insane situations. And it always bothers me that even when I don't care if you're a rookie cop, I don't care if you're even fucking stars, whatever, you're going to go against some. That is absolutely insane. And I feel like this is one of the first times we've seen a character act at all accurately to how they should. But do not compare her to Ethan Winters because like you look at like Resident Evil is kind of known for. There's the, the protagonist that we love and then there's the other guys and there's a lot of the games just have the one off person that we only saw once. Maybe they'll show up in a spin off game or whatever but like, like they're not getting their time in the the sun again. We gave Ethan winners two games, you
A
know what I mean?
B
Not enough, just him. And it's like I, I'm okay now that we're gone from it. It's like I'm actually okay with that because I like that little duology going on. What that did was very important obviously to get us where we are. I think Grace is great. Like, I think that there's some story choices I didn't like, but I think that as a character in Resident Evil, I want more from her in the future. And I like, liked how different she was from the Leon, from the big guys, from the, you know, the star power we're talking about the Jill Valentine's, the Chris Redfields, the Claire Redfields, where you at? You know, that type of stuff.
A
But I wholeheartedly agree, like I'm just begging anyone in the Resident Evil universe to act like it's not normal to experience these things. And she's like, what is going on? And that's how I would react every line.
C
Scott. Like, she's scared. Greg, leave her alone. The black sword. I mean she's a normal person throwing into an insane, I'm not saying like you don't do that. But, like, literally, they must have given her the note in the booth of like, give me another one. And then they used all of those things. There's gonna be a super cut of every time. She opens a lot.
D
And she's even like this before we get into the Resident Evil element of it all, where she's like. She's talking to her boss and she's
C
like, when it happened, like. Because again, Jen had followed nothing about this. So everything you've seen, these. These aren't spoilers. The setup to the entire fucking game. Right. Of the FBI director setting. Jen's like, like, what? So, okay, so they're just ripping off Silence of the Lambs. I'm like, well, kind of. I mean, there's a bunch of inspirations here that I'm calling out the other ones. And then she's like, why would the FBI director. I'm like, man, I don't know. Like, I'm just assuming he's going to end up being horrible too. I don't understand why you'd send this lady out to this job.
A
Yeah, she at least should have had a partner. Like, why are you sending her alone? She has no social skills.
C
Let me get some other here. Yeah. Mr. Lazu Gaming wants to go across the board here and says, how does it rank for you? Versus is seven and eight.
B
Oh, this outclasses seven and eight handily. Yeah, I. I feel like that's not even a question, like, comparing it to some of the others. Yeah, there's a real conversation. Yeah, seven and eight. I. I feel like I. I love seven. I love eight. I really do. But, like, this game does everything those games do better.
C
Requiem number one seven. Number two. The medium number three.
B
Gotta go.
C
Gotta go on that one. Sorry about that.
B
That.
C
Let me get a few more in here before. Well, I mean, there's a lot of people just wanting to say, hey, Tim. They love you, Tim. Okay, I love you. Science dog official says 10 bones for returning papa. Great to see them baby blues. Then we got. Yeah, Not Calvin playing both sides. Tim has been yelling at his TV for the past week. Also, Meline's jacket. Everybody loves the jacket. The hero of times is so happy to see Meline on this review. As a fellow observer of Feb Re with the RE capitalized in February, there's no one else I trust more mad. Would you say they nailed Grace being like Resident Evil 7 and Leon being like Resident Evil 4?
A
For me, yeah, that. That is what I was hoping for when this first dropped at Summer Games Fest. I was like, ooh, if it gets the best parts of both of those worlds, that will be a win for me. And it definitely hit for both of those.
C
Adam2Time says. So glad to see you, Tim. Hope fatherhood's been well to you. Get those Z's in. Thank you. Some sleep last night, Tim.
B
Last night wasn't a good one.
C
Sorry. Pro Noob says related belated birthday tax on behalf of Samira Mayel Gettys. Love you all. Congrats.
B
Tim, I do want to take what you just said a step further because I feel like it's very accurate because the game and like all the marketing and everything they said it is essentially like, hey, Grace is going to play like 7 and 8 and Leon's going to play like 4. It's in a beautiful wrapper of RE2 though.
A
Yes.
B
I think that that is like so such the X factor to all of this. And again, I've already said like the unique things this game does. But like I do think that the RE2, this game feels more overall like RE2 then RE4 or 7 or 8. I think even though the actual gameplay styles are clearly 7 and 8 and 4, but the vibes of the game, the way the game works and like the the balance of horror action, all that stuff like re2 remix specifically.
A
Completely agree.
C
Our final super chat before we shut it down. Thank you everybody for writing in about Madeline's jacket and Tim's baby. There's so many of you but to get us on track and get us out of here. Kazoo Pano says, you know this is an incredible achievement when you have four gamers of unique tastes all hitting, all hitting because the same mark. You know what he's trying to say? Really excited to play and get honestly a great review format. Yeah, I'm happy we were able to get so many people together to do this and play it in a different way. Like I said, Mike did play as well. He'll be signing off next week when we're gonna do the Blessing and Andy's review after we lock them in a room and make them play all weekend long, which is pretty exciting.
D
I hope they can finish it. Everybody. Hope you guys support.
B
I really hope you do.
D
Like you need to get them to the end.
B
I want to experience this game through Blessing and Andy so bad. There's so many moments like, yeah, it's like I can't even think of one thing.
C
It's the amount of times I was playing stuff. I'm like, I will want to. I'll be pay attention to see when they hear what they do.
D
When you turn on this Twitch stream, you'll see Mike and I invading and trying to order food. So yeah, you're gonna have to wait a little bit. You're gonna have to wait a little
C
like not understanding a six ounce steak is small. That's always nice.
D
We can order a bigger one this time.
C
Don't worry.
B
Before we, before we end like the one thing that I don't think we answered is is this, is this your favorite Resident Evil?
A
Yeah, this is my favorite Resident Evil.
D
This is my favorite Resident Evil.
C
Tim.
B
This is my favorite Resident Evil. I do not think it's the best Resident Evil. I Think Resident Evil 4 Remake still is is a better video game quote unquote. I think this is my favorite Resident Evil because of all the reasons I said earlier of like what I care about from this franchise and from any of these games, this really really really delivers and I think that it's going to be a lot of people's favorite Resident Evil.
C
Yeah, I think before this for me it would have been Resident Evil 2 remake was my favorite Resident Evil. And again this giving us Leon again and giving those mechanics but then mixing it up which of what I love From Resident Evil 7 and being scared in that first person like it's awesome. It's amazing. Ladies, gentlemen and bees, that's our Resident Evil Requiem review in the bag. Roger and I 9.0 Tim and Mads 9.5.
B
Phenomenal.
C
Those are pretty dang good scores. Of course, Madeline, where can people keep up with you?
