What'S up, everybody? Welcome to the Kind of Funny Games cast for Wednesday, April 23, 2025. I'm one of your hosts, Greg Miller, alongside Forbes 30 under 30, aka the second best baby blues in the world, aka the biggest Onimusha fan I know at Tim Gettys.
Tim Gettys
That's me. It's true. I. At this point, we're now four months removed from the game awards where Onimusha weigh the sword.
Greg Miller
If there's an orb, lose my mind.
Tim Gettys
And I think that it might be my most rewatched piece of my own content.
Greg Miller
Okay.
Tim Gettys
Ever.
Greg Miller
Okay. Okay. That's.
Tim Gettys
That's definitely between that and the Sora reveal where me and Bless, like completely broke down. But yeah, the Onimusha way of the sword reveal was a very big deal to me because obviously I'm a big, big fan of the franchise. Never really expected it to come back, let alone in such a big way. Yeah. And just to have Onimusha be talked about, not just for the new one, but also onimusha2 getting remastered is another destiny that I never thought we would get. Because we last got Onimusha warloads, the first one remastered in 2019. Okay, so that's a long time ago, right. And all signs pointed to it not really selling that well. So to me it was like, oh, the Onimusha experiment is dead. And that's not the case.
Greg Miller
It is not the case. But we'll get to that in one second. Because this is the kind of funny games cast each and every weekday on a variety of platforms. We run you through the biggest conversation in games, whether they be reviews, previews, interviews, or anything else we need to talk about. We cover it here right now, live. I'm just making up words there on YouTube.com kinda funnygames, Twitch TV, kindafunnygames, and of course, podcast services around the globe. Basically giving you a one on one podcast. However, no bucks tossed away. No big deal. Like subscribe, share, tell your friends, leave a rating, go ring the bell on twitch and on YouTube. And then you leave a Spotify comment. Do all the things, do it, do it but we'd really like you to pick up the membership. YouTube.com kindafunnygames patreon.com Kinda funny and of course Apple and Spotify. Usually we would tell you if you're a YouTube super chatter why not chat away on this one to be part of the show.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
But.
Greg Miller
But this is being recorded in advance. This is a very special day for housekeeping for you. If you haven't noticed, this is your second Gamescast of the day. Usually we do kinda funny games daily. Follow it with a Gamescast. However, today's first Gamescast was in fact a live review of the one, the only Clair Obscura Expedition 33. Oh yeah, our review of that is live. If you missed it, YouTube.com kindafunnygames podcast services around the globe. Of course, wherever you get your membership after this you will be getting Prometheus in review as we continue every Alien and Predator movie reviewed and ranked. And then after that you are getting the Nick Locke finale. This one just pre recorded because of course Tim, you had a very special guest that you got to interview. Yes, but I'll tell you about that one second. Remember, if you're a kind of funny member, you can get your today's Greg Way thank you to our Patreon producers, Anatoly Ast Delaney Twining Carl Jacobs and Omega Buster. Today we're brought to you by Imperial and Aura Frames. But we'll tell you about that later. For for now let's begin with what is and forever will be topic of the show. Timothy, as I said, you're the biggest Onimusha fan I know. Onimusha2 Samurai's destiny, as you said. Also getting redone coming out for everybody here. We got an email that was hey the one, the only issue. Hassan is going to be in the office. He's going to be in San Francisco. Do you guys want to interview him? And you said yes, of course.
Tim Gettys
Yes I do.
Greg Miller
Talk to me about what that email was like.
Tim Gettys
It was very exciting, right? And exciting for many reasons. I'm a huge Animusha fan. But you know, came out in a time when I was a lot younger. It's not like we I had as much disposable income as I. I do now. So you can't play every game you want to play. Sure, you play the games you get to play. You know what I mean? Whoever you are.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
The 1, 2, 3, whatever it is.
Tim Gettys
Games you get that year, whatever friends you make and you guys borrow land each other games back and forth and it kind of Goes that way. My story with only Mush is very interesting because it begins at the beginning of it. All Right. This is sixth grade, the beginning of the rest of my life. Most of my stories start in middle school because that's where I met my close group of friends.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Right?
Greg Miller
Sure.
Tim Gettys
Curry and I talk about him all the time. My best friend met him in sixth grade. And it was right around the launch of the PlayStation 2. He had a PlayStation 2 since launch. I had one about a year later. And he. He. I only had one game on PS2 when it. When I first had it. Crazy Taxi.
Greg Miller
A great game to have.
Tim Gettys
Great game. Kind of weird. That was my PS2 game, but he only had one game and it was Animusha 1.
Greg Miller
Nice.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
All right.
Tim Gettys
And we traded for the weekends or whatever. Oni1. Not a very long game, but a very memorable game, especially for that time. And I got so into it. But by the time Onimusha 2 was coming out, which was only 14 months after one crazy. Really, really quick turnaround, I wanted it so bad, but decisions had to be made and it was not in my. My future.
Greg Miller
Sure.
Tim Gettys
So current ended up getting it. And that was a one. That was a game that. Just because of how things shook out, I never actually got to play myself.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Like, no way.
Greg Miller
Really?
Tim Gettys
This was like one of those things. Like again, different times. Like he played it at my house.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
I watched.
Tim Gettys
I might have played.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
We might have traded the controller back and forth.
Tim Gettys
But I would say it was my experience with only mission 2 was his playthrough of the game.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
You know what I mean?
Tim Gettys
And then only Mission three, it was the opposite. He watched me play.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
I don't know why it happened that.
Tim Gettys
Way, but kids are kids, right?
Greg Miller
Yeah.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Sleepovers are going to happen in single player games are hard with multiple people.
Greg Miller
Right. Yeah.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
So I've been very excited for this because obviously going back and playing early PS2 games isn't necessarily the most fun, the best experience.
Greg Miller
Right.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
And I've tried going back to play to. To, you know, finish the story and actually complete it. And I just found it way too hard. Because of the tank controls.
Greg Miller
Sure. Of course.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
1. The remaster solved that problem. Not only was it widescreen, now it's a lot prettier. It just ran better. A lot of quality of life fixes. But you can actually walk around in analog controls. And that went a very long way. But even when that came out in 2019, the remastered version, I ended up not beating it. I. I played about halfway through and.
Tim Gettys
I was like, you know, what is old game Old?
Blessing Adioye Jr.
I'm not so sure, you know?
Greg Miller
Yeah.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
So leading into this I was like.
Tim Gettys
I'm gonna go back.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
I want to beat on Emusha one because I don't have access to two yet.
Tim Gettys
Yeah.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Yeah. And so I did in a weekend. I played through it and had a great time.
Tim Gettys
Old game is old, but old game still worth playing.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Still got the juice.
Greg Miller
Still got the juice.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
And I think especially in a time and place now where we've seen what Resident Evil was and what Resident Evil has become.
Greg Miller
Sure.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
And both in new installments and in remakes and all of that stuff, there's.
Tim Gettys
Something that is so pure about the.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Pre rendered backgrounds in this era of games. And Onimusha very much was kind of the PlayStation 2's Resident Evil. Like it was them trying to. It was survival horror, but in a samurai setting.
Greg Miller
Yeah.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
And that's always been very appealing to me. So playing through one immediately we get access to this and like, do you want to play a preview of two? I'm like, this is perfect timing. So you've played. So I played a fair amount of of on Mission two. And I. I will say that right now y'all could get On Mission one remastered. And I recommend you. You do that and play it before too. I think that. I think it's a very nice like setup for it. And I. I also think that so far in my experience, 2 they go even further with the quality of. Yeah, just little things like being able to skip cutscenes. That was a big problem in One.
Greg Miller
Sure.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
And two has this like a very similar vibe to the first game.
Tim Gettys
It's standalone though.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
You could just start with two if you wanted to and you're totally fine. It's completely unrelated, story wise, character wise and all that. There's also multiple characters. Like there's an ensemble cast in this one. You're mainly playing as Jubei, the lead here. But there's a very interesting gift system where you. It was very ahead of its time, I would say, where you get all these different items and you can get gift them to for other characters. And if they like the item, your bond with them grows and like then they'll. They'll help you in fights and things like that. And it's not very clear like what who wants what. Like they don't tell you. So you gotta talk to them over and over after the different like missions or whatever to feel it out, be like, okay, there's some that are obvious. So it's like cool this drunk. You want Some booze, right?
Greg Miller
Yeah.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Of course you find out you're gonna give it to him. But then it's oh, this guy's really interested in knowledge. So anytime you get a book or a map or something like that, you're gonna give it all this stuff. Pretty cool. Not the best implementation I'm going to be honest. But I do think that there's something very cool about going back to these games and just seeing like where games were.
Greg Miller
Of course.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
And there's a lot that you can take from it of like oh wow. Like these. These mechanics and features and stuff are commonplace in games now. And in many ways better now. That's how things go.
Greg Miller
Yeah.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Onyoshi 2 plays a lot better than Onimusha 1.
Greg Miller
Okay.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
They're saying I was like a direct back to back playthrough or playing of these. Like it feels good. There's something very satisfying about both these games work this way. You kill these demons, they turn into these orbs and then you. In the first game you have a gauntlet. In the second game it's just on your hand and it's cool as hell. And you just put your hand out and you have to.
Greg Miller
You suck it, sucking them in.
Tim Gettys
And it's this like really fun kind.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Of balance of timing of the orbs disappear if you don't suck them in fast enough. So you'll be in a room with a lot of enemies. There's a lot more enemies coming at you at once compared to the first game. And you. You're trying to. You kill one of them, the orbs pop up, the other guys are attacking you. So it's this balance of like you guard, you attack them, you try to suck the souls and you get them.
Tim Gettys
A little bit closer to you.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Attack, attack, attack, kill them and then keep sucking the souls. And it's so fun. Like it's like this kill confirm type of thing that like is really satisfying. So really love that story's bonkers. Makes no sense. Over the top is all hell yeah. And the best campy ass ways you. You'd imagine. Like some of the voice acting in this game is the best type of atrocious. You know what I mean? Like there's just a like it's hard to talk about this game outside of the context of 2002.
Greg Miller
Hell yeah.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
You know, that's what it was. But yeah, but I. I mean that as a compliment. I very much enjoy my time with this. I can't wait to keep playing it. I'm going to beat this game for the first Time all the way through. And yeah, just very, very excited about it. I'm excited that more people are going to get to play some very classic titles. Right. But yeah, Onimusha 2 Samurai's Destiny remaster coming out in May.
Greg Miller
So then how stoked were you then to, of course, get to play early? Sure, that's great. But I'm more importantly for this to sit down with Ishiro san, of course, the director of the original. And now this remaster the original two.
Tim Gettys
Not the Onimusha trilogy. All three had different directions.
Greg Miller
Yes, I'm specifically talking about Onimusha 2. Original Onimusha 2. And it's.
Tim Gettys
And this remaster. Super cool. You'll hear it a second. But I got to sit down and do the interview with him, which obviously is an honor.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Very, very cool.
Tim Gettys
Like, I mean, this guy is his Capcom, like, hero shit. Like, he was director of two, but was a producer on many of the Ace Attorney games on some Devil May Cry entries. But I think the most important thing is he programmed guile in Street Fighter 2.
Greg Miller
Like, that's, that's royalty.
Tim Gettys
Come on, man. So cool. And it was really cool being able to talk to him about, does it mean to remaster a PlayStation 2 game, like, to, to kind of be able to ask him about, like, Capcom, like, having the original code of this game and like, is that how this works, or. And I, I, I don't want to spoil it. I learned some pretty interesting things there.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Of, like, that I wouldn't have expected.
Tim Gettys
But, yeah, Capcom are talented, crafty over.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
There, you know what I mean?
Greg Miller
They sure are.
Tim Gettys
Yeah. But great interview. I'm excited for y'all to see it again. It was an honor to be able.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
To, to do it.
Tim Gettys
And yeah, Onyou is a very important franchise to me, and I can't wait for Way of the Sword next year. But I think that this game coming out is going to be a nice little appetizer for people that are probably, I think, the majority of people going to be playing Onimusha for the first time.
Greg Miller
Well, I want to jump into the interview, but my final question for you is, of course, as you can see down below, or maybe on the video or the podcast you clicked on, we titled this one Tim's Dream Interview. Ruined.
Tim Gettys
All caps.
Greg Miller
When does it go off the rails?
Tim Gettys
The very end, Greg. At the very end, it gets ruined. It gets ruined. So you're going to have to stay tuned, watch the interview, learn some things, and then see my pain.
Greg Miller
All right, well, let's get right to it.
Tim Gettys
What's up, everybody? Of course. I am Tim Geddes, and I am very, very, very excited for what is happening right now. I am here with legendary Capcom game designer, the director of the original Animusha 2 Samurai's Destiny, and the the upcoming remaster releasing next month on May 23rd. Motohide Ishiro.
Motohide Ishiro
Hi.
Tim Gettys
And joining us as well is his wonderful translator, Shu. Hello, Shu.
Shu
Hi, I'm Shu. We're happy to be here.
Tim Gettys
Very happy to have both of you. Before we get into to all of this, I. I want to start by saying that the Animusha trilogy is. Is very important to me. My. My best friend and I became friends because of Animusha 1. He lent me it, and then we went on to play all of the. The sequels together. And that was a bonnie experience that we're now, 20 years later, still. Still best friends because of. So, thank you very much. It is an honor to have.
Shu
He's also happy to hear that. It's just like, he just made this game, and he didn't expect that, like, you're gonna become, like, really good friends. You can make really good friends through this game. So he's just really happy to hear that. Thank you.
Tim Gettys
The amount of times we would walk through our middle school just yelling, jube, Jube, Jube. So there. There. At the game awards a few months ago, a brand new Onimusha, Onimusha and Okami games were announced. What does it mean to you to see these two franchises return?
Shu
So he's just so happy that the series are returning. So of course, he has deeply been involved in the Onimusha series. So he's also happy that the Onimusha Way of the Sword is coming next year. But also he's really happy that Onyusha 2 remaster is, like, coming next month, and he can't wait for players getting the game and playing it.
Tim Gettys
So there hasn't been a new Onimusha in a very long time. By the time that Way of the Sword comes out next year, it will have been 20 years since the last new one. And it's already been six years since the remaster of Animusha 1. Why is now the time for the franchise to return and for Animusha 2 to be remastered?
Shu
Well, it was just about the timing and condition. It has always been a candidate for our next project, but we just didn't have the right timing to start the project. But everything came together, and we were able to launch the new project, Onimusha Way of the Sword. And at that time, we thought, like, Maybe it'll be a good chance to remaster Onimusha 2 at this time as well. So we were able to just work on the new title and also the remaster of version of Onimushi 2 alongside. So it was just about timing and condition. But yeah, we were lucky that we were able to work on these titles right now.
Tim Gettys
I know you can't say much right now, but what are your thoughts on Way of the Sword?
Shu
So Ishiro san himself is not directly involved in the Onyusha Way of the Lord theme. So he can't say anything like any new information or something about the series. But he's just so happy that the series coming back after more than 20 years. And also Onimushi 2 is coming out again. So it's like the Onimushi 2 and the Onimushi series is reviving right now. So he just like feels happy that we are able to have a new title for the series.
Tim Gettys
Yeah, I'm very happy to. So Onimusha 2 was the first game that you directed for Capcom. What's it like working on your baby all these years later again?
Motohide Ishiro
Kimote Yamo Korean Sakura Director.
Shu
So it is a really rare opportunity to like come back to the title again. So, yes, Onimusha 2's original version has a really special place in his heart because it was the first title he directed. And like, there are not much kind of opportunities to come back to the game for the remastered version. So it's. So he got this offer from the producer for this title, and when he heard that, he was just really happy to hear that and just immediately accepted that offer. So yeah, we've been saying this so many times, but he's just so happy to come back to the series.
Tim Gettys
So in addition to directing Onimusha 2, you're also very well known for producing entries in many of Capcom's hit franchises like Devil May Cry, Okami and Ace Attorney. What does it mean to be a producer of a game? And how different is that compared to directing a game.
Shu
And producer. Producer direction to say. So as a producer, what you focus on is to actually deliver the game to players and you will be involved in the process of development, but it's more like overseeing a wider team like marketing and PR and such thought. And so it's not just about creating the game, but you're gonna see like even like before launch and also including post launch, you just oversee the whole project. So that's kind of different from director, because directors, because when doing direction, you just like kind of create the Game and like create with a smaller team for like what you want to have this game and what the system will be like, what characters want to have such thought. So producer. So it has a kind of different vibe from the director duties. But it like both are kind of fascinating in different ways. So I just like both of them. I'm really happy that I was able to experience both of them.
Tim Gettys
Before you directed games and produced games, I saw that you started as a programmer on Street Fighter 2. What did you do on that game? And how special is it to be part of like core gaming history with.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
That.
Motohide Ishiro
Iron Kaihatro Misashima Mita Mita Dokini Sokonoma program.
Shu
So to give his kind of background. So he entered Capcom in 1990, and when he was a rookie, he was kind of wandering around the Capcom office and seeing screens of the other staff. And he really loved the first title of Street Fighter. And he saw a new screen of Street Fighter. And I was like, oh, is this. Are you making a new Street Fighter? Is this Street Fighter 2? And yes, the creator told me that, yes, this is Street Fighter 2. And they asked him like, oh, then can I be a member of your team? Can I create Street Fighter 2? And they. Well, they readily accepted that. And so he became the team member of the Street Fighter 2 team. And so what he was in charge of was that he so entered Capcom as a programmer. So he made programs for movements of the characters like Guile and Balrog, the boxer.
Tim Gettys
So cool.
Shu
Yeah. And like at that time, he wasn't like actually thinking that he was making history. He was just like making like he was doing the best job he could do at that time. But like, in retrospect, you know, Street Fighter 2 did. Did have a really big impact on gaming history. So he just like amazed, like how that impact was big and like what he like, he's just. It's really precious experience that he worked on that title.
Tim Gettys
You program Guile, man, that's cool. That's real. That's history, baby. The Onimusha franchise was one of the first real Next gen titles on the PlayStation 2. What was it like developing for the new console at that time?
Shu
So, as you know, both Onimusha 1 and Onimusha 2 was for PlayStation 2. And well, he was greatly in charge of Onimusha 2. But at PlayStation 2 just allows the team to add more content, add more details for the background, like add more characters, like have more characters in the screen. So it just allows them to do more things for games compared to previous consoles. Onimusha 1 was also a challenge, but Onimusha 2, they did great work to add more features, more detail in the game. So that was really a great big challenge, but it was also fulfilling and rewarding to do that. Yeah, we're just really happy that he was able to work on the kind of new console that enables him to do new stuff. So yeah, that is really memorable for him.
Tim Gettys

Support this show by mentioning us at checkout. Terms and conditions apply. So Animusha 2 came out 14 months after 1. How is that quick of a timeline possible? And 2 is so much bigger than 1.
Shu
So I believe that was something the first time for Capcom to do such a thing. So they actually, they were still developing Onimusha 1 when they first started the project for Onimusha 2. So somewhat they developed the G the two games in parallel. So. So that's why they were able to deliver the game so soon. And that was something the producer at the time for Onimushi 2. As for them, they just wanted to deliver the next game soon after. Onimusha wanted to develop the series. So yeah, it was really challenging, but the team did a really great job. So I'm really happy with what we have for Onimusha 2 right now.
Tim Gettys
So the Onimusha series is known for using the likenesses of famous people as the protagonists. How did you go about deciding on the likeness of Jubei? And how did that differ from the decisions for the first game?
Motohide Ishiro
Ano Shiro Kataga Anoko Sono Masai Sakimat so no hai.
Shu
So what was different from Onyusha Warlow is that we view someone deceased at that time. So Yusaku Matsuda is the face model for Jubei in Onu Shatu. And we were discussing among the team, like who should we have for the protagonist for Onimusha 2? It will be different from Waller's, but what would the appearance would be? How would the characterization be? And so it's thought and one person, one of the team members came up with the idea like can we kind of revive a person who has already been who has deceased, like using like CG techniques to kind of include his face in the game. And so Ishiro san answered that if you have enough reference, maybe that will be possible. And then that team member came out that says that he has some connection with the agency of Yusaku Matsuda. So we just shared that information with the producer back then. And then we just like contacted that Agency and they readily gave us approval. So that is how we were able to use his face. But it was definitely something challenging because we had just limited reference because we can't just like directly capture his face. But we just have to gather many references as possible. So it was a challenge and it was different from Onimusha Wallace. But yeah, it was really something fun to do. And I'm happy that we have his face right now.
Tim Gettys
What was the inspiration behind the companion system? And who's your favorite companion system?
Motohide Ishiro
Communication.
Shu
So when we were developing Onimusha 2, we wanted to expand the world of Onimusha Warlows. So the as a whole of the Onimusha series. And so what we decided that we wanted. So we decided to add distinctive characters to the game. But like, not just having distinctive characters might not be standing out as much. So we decided that it will be interesting to be able to interact with that characters. So we implemented a system of like building relationship with the allies by giving them gifts. And it just gives you kind of the human depth of the characters. Like it's not just really too much game like, but it also is something similar to the real world. You give gifts and you see their reaction expression and see if they like it or not. And. And by giving those items and getting friendly with the allies, there are some branching stories and also sometimes you'll be able to control those allies. And by doing that, I thought that it will be really immersive to play the game and talking about my favorite ally. It'll be Kataro. His personal story is so enticing and I just love it.
Tim Gettys
I always found the gift system in Onimusha 2 very interesting, but rather hard to understand without a guide. What was the rationale behind it being so vague with the gifts and were the thoughts about making it more straightforward in the remaster?
Shu
So they kind of intentionally made it vague. So they just didn't want to show like, apparently like this character loves this. They hate this all sort of things. But by kind of interacting with the allies or like talking to them, they will tell you that like for example, AK may say that he loves alcohol. And then you know that it will be good to give him like something liquor or something. So. And also you'll get like, you will be able to get clues like by talking to them. But also I wanted people to enjoy the trial and error like giving them various items and see from their reactions and expression if they like it or not. So this is something we just wanted to portray the depth of the characters so that is something that we intentionally did. So we didn't consider to change that system in the remastered version. We just wanted to faithfully recreate that system and make people enjoy it like say like people did back in the original game.
Tim Gettys
So back then from the PS1 to PS2, Resident Evil being this survival horror franchise leading into PS2 where Resident Evil kept going, but then there was also Onimusha and then also Devil May Cry. The mix between horror and action. Was there conversations at Capcom to make sure that each series maintained its own identity.
Shu
Matt. Hi. So they do kind of share the fundamentals between those games, but it's just about kind of fixed camera and pre rendered background. They didn't actually kind of discuss with other like titles or other teams so that like each game will be like kind of different. They just wanted to make their best game and they chose to make a game based on Feudal Japan and like samurai games doing sword action. So they just like uniquely developed that game and then didn't just. They didn't kind of have conversations to like, you know, make the game make those titles different. So yeah, they just kind of worked on making their best game.
Tim Gettys
What have you changed with the remastered version of Onimusha 2 and how did you balance updating the game but not changing too much?
Motohide Ishiro
Stick Mende.
Shu
So this time what we focused on was to add multiple quality of life improvements. Giving example what the one standing out is that. So Ishiro san played the PlayStation 2 original version before working on this master project and he realized that the so called tank controls is quite, you know, it's quite difficult and not intuitive. So he thought that it would be good to have the left controls. So that is something that we have had. And also we have the cutscene skip features and autosave features. So there's not much kind of big, huge difference between the first game and the, I mean the original game and the remastered version. But we just wanted to add quality of life improvements. So we just faithfully recreated the game but in like higher definition and at a higher resolution and it just becomes easier to play and more comfortable to play. So that play of won't just kind of throw their controller and they'll just keep on enjoying the game. So that is what we focus on.
Tim Gettys
I just want to say thank you for the skip cutscene. That is very important.
Motohide Ishiro
Thank you.
Tim Gettys
So what goes into remastering a PlayStation 2 game? Like do you have access to the original code? Does Capcom archive those things and is there difficulties with pre rendered backgrounds being remastered?
Shu
So we made this remastered version based on the original program for PlayStation 2. But back then we didn't have a kind of game engine that we have these days. So we directly run the program on PlayStation 2. But this time we decided to adopt the RE engine which we use for most of the Capcom titles these days. And it was really a big challenge because we had to build the structure from scratch for the RE engine. It doesn't just like you can't just carry over the program and just adapt it to RE engine, but we had to build a structure from scratch. So that was really challenging. But now I'm really happy that the game runs smooth on modern consoles. And we have 60 FPS, we have improved graphics. So I'm just happy that we were able to do a good job and remaster this game again.
Tim Gettys
Speaking of the RE engine, was there ever any conversations about doing a remake in the style of Resident Evil 2 and 3? And if not, is there interest in that?
Shu
You Shuto Kento. So yeah.
Motohide Ishiro
So.
Shu
So he thinks that like those there's pre rendered background we have in the original version that has a kind of its own unique strength. So he just decided to have that in the remastered version as well. So they didn't actually decide like kind of wonder if it would be good to kind of remake this game for like full 3D and that kind of background. But they just kind of just think that it's really great. The pre rendered backgrounds are also great. But like in terms of like personal interest, not Capcom as a whole, but Shiro san's personal interest. It will be. He believes that it'll be interesting to see Onimusha 2 Remake. Like seeing it in full 3D. You can freely, freely rotate the camera and you can just see all those details with full 3D. So yeah, that will be interesting. And he would be happy if he could see something like that one day.
Tim Gettys
Do you have any ideas for a follow up on Jubei's story?
Shu
So you know the story and it's quite like pretty complete. So it like he doesn't like really think that we should like add something to the series but like he do like the character of Jubei. So it will be really something. It will be something interesting to see if there is a chance to like add a new story for Jubei. So yeah, he just like he'll be happy to see something like that. But he didn't kind of like wonder if he should add something to the remaster or something.
Tim Gettys
All right. We got to get real. Who would win in a fight Seminosuke or Jubei.
Shu
Sorry, he just can't tell which is stronger. It's really difficult to say Jubei is better. But yeah, he just like personally he wants to like kind of time slip and go back, go to the Feudal Japan era and see the battle between Samanosuke and Jubei. So he just like want to see which will win. So that is something he want to do.
Tim Gettys
The Onimusha cutscenes by Robot Studio are still some of the freaking coolest things I've ever seen. Do you ever rewatch them and just go, damn, that's cool because I do that all the time.
Shu
Yeah, he really likes those movies cutscenes. He just remembers that the director who was in charge of the CG movies, Kaneda san, he really did a good. Really did a great job to make those scenes. And not just the quality, but also the variation the game has. So first we have the cutscene in the Yagyu village. And next some of them are focused. The more they focus on the allies. So there is a wide variation of the cutscenes. So I just love watching them again to see how much care we put into those cutscenes.
Tim Gettys
What are some of your favorite Easter eggs in Onimusha 2?
Shu
There are many Easter eggs in the game, so if I had to pick just one, my favorite is that from the Imasho Village to. On your way from the Imasho village to the gold mine, if you wait there for a few minutes, you'll see a beetle going up the trees. So most people won't notice it because they just go to the mine and go down. But if you be. If you'll be patient, you'll see a beetle and you can capture it and you can give it to the ally as a gift. So that is the Easter egg. And I believe most people doesn't know it. So there are other multiple Easter eggs. I hope that people will find the Easter eggs that that person only knows. So just people. I hope that people would enjoy finding those.
Tim Gettys
So this, the remaster comes out next month. Do you recommend people play Onimusha 1 remaster before then?
Shu
He does recommend to play oniMushiwallers before playing Onimushu 2, but just like to get a deeper dive into the series. He doesn't recommend that. But Onimushi 2 itself, that is like enjoyable standalone. So yeah, you don't really have to. I do recommend to play that, but I just like even you can just get into the series starting from Onimusha 2, so you don't have to worry. Even if you haven't played Onimusha Warlows.
Tim Gettys
Have you played Onimusha 3? And what are your thoughts on it?
Shu
So he have played Onimusha 3, and so Onimusha Warlords, Onyushiro 2 and Onish 3, all of them have different directors, so they also are kind of developed uniquely. So he just like the difference between the other titles. And so he loves playing it. He loves the new three and at least kind of just likes how it's different from other titles.
Tim Gettys
In a promo video for Okami Den, 14 years ago, I heard you say, quote, every year for Christmas, I eat an entire roasted chicken. It doesn't matter the size. Have you kept that tradition up?
Shu
Yeah, he does continue to do that, but not just roast chicken. He also get Has a whole, like, round circle of cake as well. So yeah, yeah, he does just keep that tradition.
Tim Gettys
I love that. Thank you so much. Any final words for fans of Onimusha?
Shu
So Onimushi 2 is really like. Is a game that has a special place in his heart. So I just want more and more players to play this game. So we have added multiple quality of life improvements so that players can comfortably get into this game. So I hope that both classic Onimusha fans and also people new to the series will play this game. And I can't wait to have this game released next month. By the way, Tim, as you have heard from Greg, that Greg would like to. Greg would like you to give him the three stars you owe him. So.
Tim Gettys
Yeah. Thanks, Greg. Thanks, Greg. Not the music. Not the music. Thank you so much. Odimusha too. Oh, my God. It's not happening right now. Are you serious? Can I ask him to sign my Onimusha too? Hold on, hold on. I hate Greg so much.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Bless.
Tim Gettys
Oh, man, I love you, but this is questionable.
Greg Miller
Yeah.
Tim Gettys
Oh, it has to happen just like this, doesn't it?
Shu
Yes.
Tim Gettys
Thank you so much.
Greg Miller
Thank you so much. Thank you so much.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Thank you so much.
Greg Miller
Thank you.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Thank you, man. All right, well, great interview, Tim.
Tim Gettys
Thank you. I'm so sorry. PR team.
Greg Miller
I'm cashing in. Oh, you think they weren't in on it? Oh, they were in on it.
Tim Gettys
What do you want me to do? Okay.
Greg Miller
To your assigned seat team on it is now kind of funny Game showdown. Oh, I've waited so long for this. Oh, man, it feels so good to be home.
Tim Gettys
Yeah.
Greg Miller
Oh, Tim, great interview. Listen to the entire thing. You did a great job on it.
Tim Gettys
I heard him say Greg, and I heard him say Tim, and I was like, here we go.
Greg Miller
Oh, my God. I'm vibrating.
Shu
Blessed.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
How are you feeling, Greg?
Greg Miller
I'm vibrating. I'm gonna get three stars right now. Change the landscape of kind of funny game showdown and I'm feeling good about it now.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Coming into this, Greg, of course you're coming off of a fresh win last week. That brings you closer to Tim. I believe right now Tim is still sitting at six stars for the season.
Greg Miller
Not for long.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
You're sitting at four stars of the season coming into this. Of course. Yo, what's up? Welcome to the game showdown. Stars in the bank. Passion. I'm your host Blessing Adioye Jr. I'm joined by two contestants representing two teams. We got Tim Geddes representing team orange.
Tim Gettys
We sure do.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
And we have Greg Miller representing team.
Greg Miller
How do you think the interview went?
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Great.
Tim Gettys
It went great, Greg.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Now the rules are simple. I have a trivia question worth one of Tim's stars.
Tim Gettys
Yes.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
If Greg gets the question right, he gets to take one of Tim stars. If Tim gets it right, he gets to keep all of his stars one star. You can buzz in to answer contestants. Are you ready?
Greg Miller
Yes.
Tim Gettys
Yes.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
The popular movie franchise Ghostbusters has been adapted into many video games over the years. What was the Name of the 2023 VR ghost?
Greg Miller
Ghostbusters Rise of the ghost lord.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Ghostbusters Rise of the ghost lord is the correct answer.
Tim Gettys
It's the worst day of my life. It was the best day. That just changed.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
You have just won one of Tim star tying us up for the season. Now here's the thing, Greg, I want to give you the one time option of triple or nothing. Greg, since you got the question right, I want Roger falling apart over here. I want to give you the option to go triple or nothing. All right. If you say yes, here are the rules. I can ask one more question for a chance for Greg to steal two more stars from Tim for a total of three stars.
Tim Gettys
However, no.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
If Tim gets this next one right, not only does he take back his star, he gets to take back team blue forever. Team blue will then trade their star total with team orange.
Tim Gettys
Greg, wait.
Greg Miller
The arithmetic. It makes sense.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
It makes sense.
Greg Miller
It makes sense.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
You're basically trading back to team so keeping the stars that you've earned is.
Tim Gettys
Okay, okay, okay. I get blue and I win.
Greg Miller
Yes.
Tim Gettys
Okay.
Greg Miller
Yeah, yeah. You would take the stars you currently have and you would become team blue and then I would take the stars I currently have become team orange.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Correct.
Greg Miller
But so to make so the. The deal here is you ask Tim a question.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
No, this is Going for both of you. This is the same scenario.
Greg Miller
And what. How many. What is the star total for each of us right now with me having that one.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Barry, if you can bring up the star tracker, I know I'm putting you on the spot here.
Give me a second.
Right now it's Greg four, Tim six.
Greg Miller
But I just got one.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
So right now it is Greg five.
Tim Gettys
Ball game going into the finale.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Greg, you can earn two. You've been asking for it the whole season.
Greg Miller
I promised it. I was promised.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
This is me fulfilling it. You can earn the three right here. But if you get it wrong, Tim gets my back.
Greg Miller
But what if neither of us get it? Then nobody gets it. What happens then? Well, I guess nothing, right?
Blessing Adioye Jr.
So, yeah, I'm gonna make sure somebody wins.
Greg Miller
Can I say what kind of game is it?
Blessing Adioye Jr.
I'm gonna tell you what.
Greg Miller
Your freaking heroes.
Tim Gettys
Can I have something, man? Here we go.
Greg Miller
Andy, what should I do, Andy? Andy says do it.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
All right. We're going for a triple or nothing.
Greg Miller
I didn't say yes. Let's do it.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
We're gonna do it. Now this is gonna be a one round kind of feudy. You each will get two chances to guess the top answers for the prompt. Because he's the challenger, Greg will go first. The prompt is name a game with a lot of climbing. For this one, I'll accept franchise answers. And also for contrast, this is from a spring 2024 poll. So we're not getting answers from last year. We're going to start off with Greg Miller.
Greg Miller
Uncharted.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Greg says uncharted. Uncharted is our 50 point answer.
Tim Gettys
Tim.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Of course, this is regular count of feedy rules. So you each get two guesses here. Tim, you're up.
Tim Gettys
Legend of Zelda.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Tim says Legend of Zelda. Legend of Zelda.
Greg Miller
Okay.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Is our 40 point.
Tim Gettys
Yeah, I thought it was 50 answer.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Greg, we're back to you name a game with a lot of climbing.
Tim Gettys
Oh, man, there's a lot. This is really bad now.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
This is rough.
Greg Miller
Now.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Two more of Tim stars are on the line here.
Greg Miller
Because there's so much the problem with feudies, you go with what you would do and the long lineage in history of games. Dude, you should have felt my heart when we were waiting for you to finish this up. So you want to go through the lineage, but then I also know the audience doesn't think that way. And so then it gets to, well, what is the audience thinking on this one? Are they more recent? Are they thinking historically? And you are accepting franchises.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Franchises.
Greg Miller
I'm going to risk it for the biscuit here. I'm gonna go with the audience being more recent duckies. All right. I'm gonna say Star Wars Jedi Fallen order. You know, throw it all together.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Greg says Star Wars. Star wars is not on the list.
Greg Miller
Doors wide open.
Tim Gettys
I know. So bad, man.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
You need the 30 or 20 point answer.
Tim Gettys
I want to let y'all know how bad I am right now. That all I have in my head. All that I have in my head is Kevin's dong. Just swing it around and mount your friends.
Greg Miller
Yeah, okay, but that's a great answer.
Tim Gettys
I know, but it's not you. No.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
All right, all right, all right.
Tim Gettys
I need.
Greg Miller
Can we get the timer up? Can we get the timer up, Barrett? Can we get the timer up there?
Tim Gettys
I have enslaved Odyssey to the west on my mind. Like that's where I'm at right now.
Greg Miller
No, can we get the timer, Barrett?
Blessing Adioye Jr.
That's not how feudy works. Yeah, man. Usually I'm the man. You also. You also took your sweet time.
Tim Gettys
Tomb Raider.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Tim says Tomb Raider.
Greg Miller
I like the smile. That means you got it.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Tomb Raider is not on the list. Greg just won two more of Tim stars.
Greg Miller
Yes. Come on.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Fun fact. Tomb Raider was our sixth place answer.
Greg Miller
No.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Our ten point answer that nobody got was Horizon. The Horizon Zero dawn and Horizon Forbidden West Games.
Greg Miller
Oh my God.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Our 20 point answer, Assassin's Creed.
Shu
Which I'm shocked.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Right on the table for you. Assassin's Creed. And then our 30 point answer was Jesant. If you wanted to go with 360 bias. Of course Jason came out a couple years ago, but last spring will still in our audience members minds there. Of course bring up the Star Tracker if you're able to bear it. Because coming into this, Greg was sitting at four stars with Team Blue. Tim was sitting at six stars with Team Orange because Greg just stole three. We did it.
Greg Miller
God andor Satan. We did it. Team Blue, we finally righted some wrongs.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Greg and Team Blue are now at 7 stars total. Meanwhile, Team Orange is now back competing with Team Purple three. We got three stars for Team Orange. Team Purple's still sitting at one star.
Greg Miller
Oh my God. We did it.
Tim Gettys
Everybody of all day.
Greg Miller
Oh my God.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
How do you feel?
Greg Miller
I feel amazing. All right. You know what I mean? We came off that penultimate episode. I rocked. Everybody Just destroyed him. Looks so great. I was worried about maintaining that level of intensity, but here we are.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
Here we are.
Greg Miller
Here we are. All thanks to Onimusha. Thank you.
Blessing Adioye Jr.
The season finale will be coming soon, but this has been your game. Showdown. Stars in the bank. Can Passion. Congrats to Greg Miller and Team Blue. We back with another episode later on. Until next time, it's been our pleasure to serve you.
Shu
I did it.
Greg Miller
I won the money.
Kinda Funny Gamescast: Tim's Dream Interview RUINED – Episode Summary
Release Date: April 23, 2025
Hosts: Tim Gettys, Greg “GameOverGreggy” Miller, Blessing Adeoye, and Andy Cortez
Episode Title: Tim's Dream Interview RUINED
The episode kicks off with a nostalgic dive into the Onimusha franchise, a favorite of host Tim Gettys. Tim expresses his excitement over the recent announcements related to the series, highlighting the release of Onimusha Way of the Sword and the remastered version of Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny. He remarks, “It might be my most rewatched piece of my own content” (00:46), underscoring the personal significance the series holds for him.
Greg Miller and Blessing Adeoye join Tim in reminiscing about their early gaming days. Tim shares how Onimusha 1 became a cornerstone of his friendship in sixth grade, stating, “Most of my stories start in middle school because that's where I met my close group of friends” (04:27). Blessing adds his enthusiasm for revisiting classic PlayStation 2 titles, noting the challenges and improvements in the remastered versions, such as “widescreen, prettier graphics, and analog controls” (06:23).
Greg introduces the episode's highlight: an exclusive interview with Motohide Ishiro, the director of the original Onimusha 2, and his translator, Shu. Tim expresses his honor in securing this interview, emphasizing Ishiro's pivotal role in the series and his contributions to other Capcom franchises like Devil May Cry and Ace Attorney. He enthuses, “I think the most important thing is he programmed Guile in Street Fighter 2” (11:59), showcasing Ishiro’s extensive influence in gaming.
Tim opens the discussion by thanking Ishiro, sharing how Onimusha has been instrumental in his personal life. Ishiro and Shu express their happiness over the franchise's revival, attributing it to favorable timing and conditions. Shu explains, "Everything came together, and we were able to launch the new project alongside the remaster of Onimusha 2" (17:38).
The conversation delves into the distinct roles of director and producer. Shu outlines, “As a producer, you focus on delivering the game to players, overseeing a wider team including marketing and PR” (21:11). In contrast, the director’s role is more about creative vision and game design, highlighting Ishiro’s multifaceted expertise.
Ishiro shares his early days at Capcom, nostalgically recalling his work on Street Fighter 2. Shu elaborates, “He made programs for movements of characters like Guile and Balrog” (26:15), underscoring his foundational contributions to iconic games. Transitioning to Onimusha, Shu explains the challenges and innovations brought by the PlayStation 2’s capabilities, enabling more content and detailed environments (28:29).
A significant portion of the interview focuses on the Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny remaster. Ishiro discusses the technical aspects, such as adopting the RE Engine to enhance graphics and performance, achieving “60 FPS” and higher resolutions (48:57). Shu highlights the quality-of-life improvements, including:
The duo talks about the unique companion system in Onimusha 2, where players give gifts to allies to build relationships, adding depth to the gameplay. Tim comments on the system’s initial complexity, “It's the best campy ass ways you’d imagine” (10:57). They also reveal hidden Easter eggs, such as capturing a beetle to gift an ally, encouraging players to explore and discover secrets (56:35).
Looking ahead, Ishiro touches on potential remakes and story expansions. While the remaster stays faithful to the original, there’s curiosity about a full 3D remake, allowing free camera movement and more dynamic interactions. Shu shares Ishiro’s hope to see continued storytelling within the franchise, possibly exploring new narratives for beloved characters like Jubei (51:58).
