Colin
This episode we go through the potential aesthetic choices for the upcoming cartoon. And some of them are bad ideas and some of them are okay. We also give you the latest on the upcoming GKA event that's going to go down in Mykonos, the final stop of the world tour this year. And we talk about the finale of Road to Pro, the Japan season, which is coming out today on Thursday the 14th on portrait.
Adrian
Catastrophic equipment failure.
Colin
Going for the boogaloo double just to get the landing. Had a couple of strings and it was extremely dangerous. Guys, I sand the trap and it
Adrian
is gold for Ellie Aldridge and gold for Great Britain column. Why aren't we in Diffie Kite? Have you ever wanted to go to Defy Kite?
Colin
Yeah, we talk about it every year. We never go.
Adrian
It's the same as going to Hood River.
Colin
Awsi. No, Awsi would. That would actually be boring. Whereas the defi Kite. Explain to the people what it is.
Adrian
I don't actually know. It just looks like a shitload of people having a lot of fun.
Colin
It's a race. It's a massive race and it's. The iconic thing about it is the start line is between a boy and. And a boat. Essentially the second buoy of a start is on the boat. So there's no, there's no start line until the boat crosses the first buoy and then the start line gets longer and longer and longer. So say there's 10 of you racing. You want to go past the boat as soon as it passes the buoy and you want to get as close to the boat as possible as the line extends because obviously you have like a 22nd head start if you, if you're there right on the buzzer as opposed to when it finishes. That's the iconic visual of it because people come unbelievably close to the back of that boat.
Adrian
It does look like fun. I think it's probably like the, you know, the German kite masters. I think it's just basically a massive piss up.
Colin
I think it could be that that's
Adrian
probably why we're never there.
Colin
It's probably, it's probably a good thing we're not doing that, you and me at parties, mate.
Adrian
We're. We're in the door at 9 o'. Clock. One lap. I'll go this way, you go that way. Right, see you back at 9:15. Show your face and get out.
Colin
That's it. I'm too busy. This ad making. Making animations.
Adrian
Yeah, yeah. How's the animations coming, by the way? I really Enjoyed the first. I don't know if I was the first person to hear the read, but that's a serious amount of reading. And I don't know if the kite borders are gonna be able to keep up with that.
Colin
No. So basically, folks, I've written these short stories and I wrote it in like, it's probably about 7,000 words. I wasn't really sure how long that would take to read, but to like 40 minutes to read. So we're gonna have to trim that down a lot because I want the episodes to be about 20, 25 minutes. But yeah, now we're at the point where we are figuring out the animation aesthetic. And because we've, you know, in this age of AI, we just think it's going to be really easy. Oh, don't worry. AI will just do that. Don't worry about it. Oh yeah, I can do that. Oh yeah, Great. So we spend the day. I day. I. We spent the day on AI how was that?
Adrian
Yes, that must have been terrible.
Colin
It just doesn't just. It can't do. Can do something, but it's not what you want. And it's just whether we can make it do what we want or whether we just leave. Leave it and just do ourselves for a bit. I don't know. I don't know. Adrian.
Adrian
I listened to it around 10 o' clock at night in my bed with the headphones on. Yeah, yeah, yeah. In the dark, eyes closed, really deep into it. And I don't want to say the characters because I don't want that to be a surprise, but return of some of my favorite characters and next thing I know, it was like 5 o' clock in the morning. I had to re. Go back to it. I had to go back to it again the next morning.
Colin
And so you're saying the first time it sent you to sleep.
Adrian
I'm probably too tired. Probably was the wrong time to listen to it, but I might have put on the headphones and went for a walk with a dog and listen to it.
Colin
Right, let me. I will now show Adrian a few of the aesthetics we've come up with for the animation. I'll hold them up to the webcam and Adrian can describe what it is to you.
Adrian
Oh, Andre Prippy, mate. He's got the. The pink hair with the white dots, mate. He's looking very angry, by the way. And where, by the way, where is that cross hanging from? Is that a. Is that an earring coming from the top of the ear?
Colin
No. See, this is a problem with AI it's taken what's a tattoo and given it some.
Adrian
I know that's Andrea, but it almost looks like Baptiste Bordollis and Andrea had a love child. Look at the mustache on that. That's a. That's a. That's a very strong looking human.
Colin
And this is a better one. Oh, that's. Oh, yeah, that's the stuff, mate.
Adrian
The teardrop. Have you spoken to any writers yet about reading?
Colin
No. It needs to be sprung on them at the last second so they don't have too long to think about it.
Adrian
Like, come over for dinner. Give yourself two hours. By the way, you got a sandwich and here's a microphone. I think you, I think people need to, you need to treat it like a, a proper acting job. They need to get the, the script and need to read it and.
Colin
Yeah, oh, absolutely, dude.
Adrian
It's going to be hilarious. Those first couple things will be funny.
Colin
So that aesthetic of Andrea is the first type we've done, which is like 8bit 2d, kind of like Pokemon, that sort of everything's made out of squares. And then, Adrian, could you please describe this one,
Adrian
mate? It is Colin. Colin Carol returning. I want to say it's Pinocchio, but it almost looks like a semi erect penis being whirled around in a helicopter type way. Penis face.
Colin
So we've figured out a way to attach phalluses to people's faces. That wasn't AI actually. That is the human genius. And then this is another version of it.
Adrian
That's Pinocchio. Oh, dude, that's Pinocchio Sam. I mean, that is actually awesome, eh? Actually it's not that much different than his original nose, mate. That is brilliant.
Colin
So essentially that is a AI filter that attaches a phallus to your nose, extends your own nose and makes it, gives it a flaccid sort of elongated nature.
Adrian
Then I got a big enough snozard as it is, you know, I can't. I don't want to extend my snoz anymore. Me and Hill are like basically wind farms, you know, just always facing to the wind. But we don't have a choice, mate, because we go sideways, our head gets blown around like a wind vane on a boat.
Colin
Then the last aesthetic we tried was I was like, what about if we do people's bodies in graffiti spray paint. So we went and bought some spray paint and accidentally sprayed the carpet of this little studio and just breathed in way too much fumes from the, from the paint. But that was the third one. And then we decided that we got to the end of the day. And we thought none of those are quite right. But. So we haven't worked out what we're gonna do, but we've worked out what we're not going to do, which we decided was progress in a funny sort of way.
Adrian
Well, let's talk about the big progress or Road to Pro Japan, episode four, out today.
Colin
Yeah, it's out today and this is the finale. It's got the video they've worked tirelessly on throughout the whole series. They go bowling. What else happens in this one? I think there's the most mud flicking between Pete and Jason in this one, which is quite satisfying. Jason points out the fact that Pete has been going to supermarkets to buy the red ball count. And steezy. Pete says this about the Japanese culture.
Marine
Yeah, I'd say everything's kind of cute except the porn. That's quite gnarly. But yeah, everything else is. Everything else is adorable.
Colin
And the fact that they hunt whales.
Marine
Yeah, and everything's really cute apart from the fact that they murder charismatic, borderline sentient megafauna, which is like whales, which is kind of tough. And dolphins. I mean, everyone loves dolphins apart from the Japanese, apparently.
Adrian
So.
Marine
Well, actually, no, they love eating them, but otherwise
Adrian
only one person could describe it as megafauna. Hey, I've been getting a few people asking me, will there be a YouTube edit for this or is there something coming out on YouTube that the layman can see?
Colin
Let's say we're going to start to put legacy episodes of Road to pro onto YouTube. So to see this series, you're gonna have to go on to portrait and support us in doing so. So we can go meet the next ones because this is our full time work and it is impossible without the support of the audience. Surprise, surprise. No brands are interested in, in this. None. You cannot. It's simply untenable. So, yeah, this is completely audience funded, which we're very proud of and we're, we're so lucky to do it.
Adrian
I think we're the only ones doing that.
Colin
Yeah, definitely. No one else is stupid enough to try.
Adrian
That's true. Yeah, that's true. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's gonna be cool. Yeah, I'm looking forward to that. So this is the, this is the final, the final piece of the puzzle.
Colin
Yes, yes, this is the conclusion.
Adrian
Actually, I haven't even, by the way, to the listeners out there, I haven't seen these. Which is super cool. I'm kind of enjoying it as you guys are enjoying it, which is super cool. I mean, Obviously, I was there during the recording. I've got a general idea, but it's nice to sit back and see everything pasted together.
Colin
Yeah. It's been fun. So fun doing it. Yeah, we're happy. We're happy. All right, what's next?
Adrian
Let's talk Mykonos. We're heading there. A couple things I want to bring up. Next week on Portrait will be a free video. It's going to be a fantasy update that Rolly and I will do. We're bringing out new cards. There's going to be updates to the marketplace, and we're going to be building up that or building up the tension or building up the sort of excitement towards the Mykonos event. It is going to be the final step of the GK Big Air World Tour. I was watching the WSL Raglan fantasy video and I was just trying to get some ideas, and I really feel like Raglan.
Colin
The WSL is going to Raglan.
Adrian
Yeah, yeah. Starts in two days time in New Zealand.
Colin
Wow.
Adrian
Yeah. Super cool. And I was sort of watching that, and it was. It was really cool to see what they get. They actually get the brackets really, really early. And I thought about that, and I thought that would be cool, but I think that would be really, really cool for the writers because gone are the days where you could sort of cruise through round one. Remember back in the day, two years ago, Andrea would have tricks for round one, tricks around three, then tricks for the final. You can't do that anymore. You know, you need to be on the ball and whatever seating you have. I don't think that's so important. You just have to really be very, very strategically prepared. So I'd love to see the riders know if they're in earlier and also get the brackets out earlier. I think that's something that we should start looking for with these events and allowing guys to really prepare. I don't know if anyone's seen Baby Sharks. Relentless Episode. Episode two is really good. Should watch it. And how he's preparing for this venom. He's got a wall. It's just got post pictures all over the wall of the plan. And I like that. I think that's. That's the step forward. And I think these riders now are having to be way more professional because the trap is not that far in front anymore, actually. They're in the pack.
Colin
How cool is that?
Adrian
It's amazing.
Colin
What a moment. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm looking to clean up at this fancy event in Mykonos I'm using to I'm looking to get there early, obviously use my insider knowledge that I won't be putting on the Internet to manipulate and better my score.
Adrian
Well, there's no manipulations. You just have to wait for your free pack to come and then buy some packs if you want.
Colin
I'm gonna be putting pins in people's height and, you know, just causing chaos where I can.
Adrian
Who's gonna miss out in Mykonos? Because I think the women's are pretty. It's pretty easy. I don't think there's gonna be too many bolters in that. But on the men's, someone's gonna get upset. Someone's gonna be disappointed.
Colin
So do you want to just explain the capacity? There's 10 slots, isn't there?
Adrian
The top 10 have automatic entry, then there's 10 by video, and then there's four wild cards. Two wild cards are from the local organizer, two from the GKA. Last time here was a GKA wild card, which he was not happy about. Are we going to see a couple of big names miss out? I mean, Parker Sage wasn't in last
Colin
time and since then, Parker's gone massively, massively viral on Instagram. Outrageous and outrageous thing happened on Instagram for Parker Sage. I reckon Kevin Langaray must be so pleased.
Adrian
Let me give you the top 10 who are already pre registered for this event. This is 1 through 10. Finn Flugel, Leonardo Casati, Andrea Principe, Lorenzo Casati, Zach Adams, Shahar Sabri, Yoshua San Ferreira, Keem Overkirk, and Steen Moore. So outside of that, the Cohen, the Nathan's, the Timos, the Josh, the Jason, the Luca, the Baptist, the Jamies, the Hugos, the Clemond, the Jeremy, the Martin, the Unibor, the Elliot Baton, the Maxwell Dahls, the Karima Mood, Beto Gomez, heel V in 31 position, Nelson, holes in 32, T. Romeo. All those guys have to put in a video for 10 spots.
Colin
It's kind of mad, eh?
Adrian
Is he going to miss out?
Colin
Surely not.
Adrian
That ranking is just not fair because it's. He's only got a single event really, but I mean, some of those rankings are too fat. Keem over Kirk and eight. I mean, he's got a sixth from last year and then a 21st this year. I think that's a pretty unfair thing. But someone's gonna be, Someone's gonna be missing out. I mean, Parker Sage hasn't even ridden this event so far. I want to see Parker in there.
Colin
I don't think Parker will be in there. If he wasn't in at Mykonos at Laws of Charm, even you don't think
Adrian
they're gonna give him a look?
Colin
No, I don't see why.
Adrian
Maybe he can get in through the video. Do you think he's gonna put his.
Colin
So just some context. He jumped off a boat and did a front roll or something, didn't he? Wasn't that. It wasn't that good. People have done it loads. But Parker's, for whatever reason, went massively viral.
Adrian
I think that comes off as tick tock. I think that's been. I think that his. Because he's big on tick tock. Through the falling. Yeah, yeah. Falling's big on tick tock. And I think because he's got a big TikTok falling account, I think they sort of. They merge together. I think Baby Sharks one at the Blue Lagoon is a. Is. It's got more likes and. And more interactions, you reckon? Oh, absolutely, yeah.
Colin
I want data on this.
Adrian
Well, let's go data. Right, let me just get. Let me pull up. Let's go. Yosu first. Let's go here. It's got 2.8 million likes and been viewed 47.3 million times.
Colin
Those numbers are.
Adrian
That is honestly 25 million views and 1.2 million likes. So he's. He's almost double Parker. I mean, Parker's running off the thing. He goes, it's just a kite. Lou bored off. It's not even a front roll. Oh, he does a late, late rotation at the end.
Colin
Pretty mad.
Adrian
And he's not even in a G string. I mean, that's the trick normally, isn't it? You know. Anyway, who's missing out?
Colin
I think they'll overlook Parker. Based on. He doesn't pay. Based on reading not paying the GKA fee.
Adrian
I'm going to read the names. You say yay or nay. So we're going to start at 10th position. Cohen. Van Dijk.
Colin
He's in 100%.
Adrian
Nathan Texier.
Colin
No.
Adrian
Timo Boisma.
Colin
Timo's so borderline.
Adrian
Okay. Josh Gillett.
Colin
He's in.
Adrian
Jason Van der Spee.
Colin
He's in.
Adrian
Luca Tarutti.
Colin
He's in.
Adrian
Baptiste Jacquemin.
Colin
He's in.
Adrian
Jamie Overbeek. In Hugo Wordsworth. In Clement Earle.
Colin
Not in.
Adrian
Jeremy Blando.
Colin
Are you joking?
Adrian
Martin Kobriski.
Colin
Is it 24 fleet? No.
Adrian
Yeah. 2412.
Colin
Yeah. Martin should be in there. And his ranking will be good from.
Adrian
No, he's only. He's ranked 22. Yena Bore.
Colin
No.
Adrian
Elliot Bhatan.
Colin
Yeah. How many Have I on there. Have I said 10 yet?
Adrian
So that's 10. So the people missing out, Maxwell Dahl, he'll vote Nelson Holmes bear. Yeah. That. Those type of characters.
Colin
Okay. Put heel in for me. Put healing for me.
Adrian
Yeah. Well, I'm not going to write it down. It's just. Well, I'm just saying just I wanted to prove a little point. That's tough.
Colin
Oh.
Adrian
But that's what I'm saying. Someone is going to start missing out, you know. You know, we had, you know, before Colin, we had 2013 to 2020. We sort of end up calling those the old guard. But that's just a punch at being the originals. Right. You know, I'm not, I don't want to punch down on those guys. They were the original sort of fleet. Then from 2021 through to 25 we had the sort of back Allen and TR era and I kind of feel like we're in a different era again. You know, in every era there's a cut off of people. You know, the 2000s we lost all those guys through that BAL area. We. We lost the marks, the Liams, the Aarons. We're going to start having to cut people out and unfortunately people in that position like heel are going to start being those guys. And by the way, I'm not just saying. It's just heel's the only name that's coming to my mind. Right. But there's always going to be a superstar that gets cut out in every era that remind us that it's just never ending change in this new breed. I don't know what we're going to call them yet, but they don't fear comps. You know, I was speaking to Marine about it. He was saying it's incredible that these kids have no fear on. You know, we used to talk about competition experience and riding comps and doing time on the water. These kids don't seem to care. I know that the, the kids coming through the world class kiteboard academy, they ride a lot of, you know, second and third tier comps and national comps and I guess that all helps. But it's almost like what the wicked kids are doing is almost like what the. The backle guys had when they got to the big dance. They had this big footprint of competitions. Be it at a second tier level maybe even though back was high and they're coming in and they're just dominating. And I think, I think this new breed is. Is not going anywhere and there's more coming.
Colin
Yeah. I think also the trap Sort of proved that you didn't need to carry that pressure and weight that you can turn up as a young person do amazingly well. I think they changed their expectations for young riders coming through.
Adrian
Absolutely. I mean, we are a young sport, right? I mean we're 25, 26 years old, you know, 30 years max. But you know, when you look at skateboarding and those type of sports, look at the olympics, they're all 12 and 13 year old kids. I mean, that's just the nature of the way this board is going. I don't think we're ever going to go that young, especially with Red Bull, with, you know how that, that minimum age of 16 for those comps. But and also I think in kiteboarding because we're pushing the limit, you need to have some physical strength to take the crashes. Right. I think that's generally important.
Colin
Yeah, yeah.
Adrian
We're becoming younger and younger and I think that's, I think a. It's exciting. I don't know if it's healthy for the sport. Red Bull always like the storytelling of the old guys, right? You know, the old guard or Aaron and the former kings. But last year they didn't give a. They just cut Aaron and Mark.
Colin
Yeah. And left out Jamie Overbeak in one of the biggest ups in King Air history, in kiteboarding history.
Adrian
Did you see Jamie's. His entry video, mate? It's awesome. It's almost like, I mean, I wrote a comment, I hope you make it, but it's just so stupid. I mean, it's so crazy.
Colin
And this is an entry video for the Mykonos event, Right? Current world number one has to enter via video.
Adrian
He's not the current world number one. I mean, he is, he's in our heart as number one, but he's actually. His GK ranking is 17th because he's
Colin
based on last year as well because
Adrian
he didn't ride the event last year. He's only got, he's only got a thousand points.
Colin
But why is it based on last year as well? This is crazy.
Adrian
If they only did one event, they cut his score in half to give him. He's on. He's got a score of 500 now because any road one event he's, he's 1 above Hugo and Hugo's. Hugo's events. He got 21st. He got 21st in 25 and 21st in this year. He's on the same points as Jamie. Anyway, I, I'm sure they've got a method to this madness, so we can't keep on it's not a GK Bash circle, but yeah, it's, it's tough, man. And there is just a lot of riders and guess what? These are the big fleets. You imagine when we go to Red Bull, we're going to be dropping down to 18. It's going to be so hard to make.
Colin
Yeah.
Adrian
By the way, I think it's going to be really awesome for Pako and Full Power Tarifa and the Windsor Sinai and these events. I think more and more high level riders will go to that just for more time on the water, more competition.
Colin
Yeah, yeah.
Adrian
Because they're going to miss out on. They're going to miss out on these big Red Bull events.
Colin
You know, I mean, Finn Flugel is going to win to s. When Andre
Adrian
was the Trilogy champion, he still rode in the, in the Italy under 19. Big air, which I think is one of the most stupid things we've heard.
Colin
But having fun, bro.
Adrian
Ciao, bro. These kids are shit. They're doing board offs
Colin
and then for Chippy's, just turning off and annihilating them.
Adrian
Riding like a fucking predator. Windsor Sinai is in Blue Lagoon. It's interesting to see how many people are in Blue Lagoon at the moment. Have you seen that?
Colin
Really? Teaming.
Adrian
Teaming with mates, full of people. A lot of it is the, what I like to call the visa dodges. The people who don't have European passports who want to train out, get out of the Southern hemisphere and want to train but they can't afford to be in Europe. There's. There's that crowd, the, the Hugos and the, the Green Mamba holders and Jason Van Der Spee and, and Josh Gillett and those characters. But there's a big, big crew there, man, real big crew at Bugoon at the moment. You've not been up there yet, eh?
Colin
No, never. You have?
Adrian
Yeah, I've been a couple times. We should go back and do it because it's a really cool part of the world and can be great. Wind also can be terrible, but terrible
Colin
as in gusty or terrible as in non existent.
Adrian
Can be hot and can be no wind and then can be wind. You know, it's a, it's a, it's a fickle place, but when it's on, it's on. But I want to have a quick shout out to Sarah Siddique who got married. Congratulations. Sarah, by the way, one of the nicest people in the industry. Right. Tiny little girl, tough as nails, mate. On her wedding day she went out kiting. She was, mate, she was training on her wedding day, which I, I thought was so cool, she went down there, she did a deal with her husband. She said, if it's over 25 knots, I'm gonna go train. And it was like 27, 28 knots. So she went down and ripped some double loops, probably in Baby Bay there and, you know, then came back and got the makeup on. Now, there's not many girls in the world, Colin, who would go and do that.
Colin
There simply are not.
Adrian
I don't think any.
Colin
This is probably, yeah, this is probably the case. So in celebration of this Mykonos GK event that's coming up, we are putting out the Mykonos footage, the full story from our trap visit last year where a Cherpincipi, Lorenzo Casati and Jeremy Blando just tore Mykonos to pieces on the water and off the water and they kind of just bowled around the place doing whatever they pleased. And yeah, that edit will drop around the time of the Mykonos event and we're gonna sell some merch as well along with it. So that'll be cool. So keep up, keep, keep your eyes on, on the emails for that.
Adrian
Did you see Sara Hoogenrad's in the AMA at the moment on our Discord, Colin? She's killing the answers, mate. So professional and so positive coming out of this tough situation. Yeah, it's really good to see.
Colin
Yes, she's cool. She's just epic woman, isn't she? So she's in our Discord answering questions of people that are in the Discord. Adrian, how do people get in there?
Adrian
If you become a portrait member, when you sign up, you will receive an email. There's a link to the Discord still, some people don't manage to get that or sign up. And if you do have any troubles after signing up, you let me know and I'll check to make sure I remember because I had some sneaky people pretend to be members to try get in there because that's how cool it is. And we regularly invite a top level writer in there to do some feedback or to do some AMA with them. We don't keep it too long just because the demand can be a bit crazy. But I'm thinking about asking you and Jasmine to be in the next one. Actually had a lot of people asking about that to. To catch up with him. So we'll see.
Colin
Former pro kite designer, Nash Designer.
Adrian
Yeah, legend, by the way. Great interview. I must. He's another kid I get. Should get back on the podcast. Great to hear his take on the industry because he's coming from a freestyle and park background and now's more heavily involved in the big air. So I'll be interested to hear his take on what's going on from a design point of view.
Colin
Yeah, cool. Cool. All right. And yeah, if you have any problems with your sign in or finding the Discord stuff team@portraitkite.com email with your issue and Adrian will pick it up, which he's always pleased to. All right, thank you. To us. The words we'll see in the next one. Goodbye.
