It's kind of crazy here. Yeah, no good. It's just unlike anywhere I've been before. It's kind of like we're kiting on the set of Red Dead Redemption. That's what it feels like.

It's amazing, though. There are beautiful people, amazing food, some nice atmosphere. The wind is strong.

Yeah. So Cabo de la Vela, which is in the north of Colombia, and it's the region of the Colombian tribe, the Yu people, and it's most famous for being Beto's hometown, Beto Gomez, who competed in King of the Year. What else that people need to know about? Beto rides in a very, like, loose style. Duotone. What else? Anything else? Oh, there's a better documentary coming from Noe1, which I'm excited for. Coming here, seeing his hometown, and realizing the distance he did from growing up here in a community that didn't know anything about kiteboarding. He literally was one of the first people to see kite boarding in. In his town. To go from there all the way to competing in the king of the air multiple times. He had that incredible interview in on the beach, didn't he? I think. I think he must have worked harder than the fleet to have done that, to have done that distance and to be there.

This spot here, when you look at it on the map, it's on the sort of leeward side of the island. I mean, is it a flat area that the wind can pass across, making it rideable? Because obviously, if there was mountains, you wouldn't be able to ride that position. Yeah, yeah.

It's flat. It funnels between two sets of mountains. That's why the wind's so strong. Yeah, but it isn't like it's quite odd. Odd wind. It's not as smooth as you'd think it could be, considering there's little obstruction. It seems to pick up, like, it gusts for 25 seconds and then comes back down. It's like long, drawn out gusts.

But it is a cool spot. I mean, it looks kind of sick because Jamaikite's done some cool stuff there. There's lots of cool videos of Beto there. Yeah, I mean, it is an interesting spot. Is there a rescue service for people who get into trouble?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Lots of people learning here as well. It's a good place to learn, like knee deep water for a bit of distance and yeah, it's perfect. It's just a. Hola, Vincente. Como estas bien? He's just turned up on a motorbike with three big fresh fish. Robolo. They look like Robolo.

Absolutely, we've seen Beto. Yeah, Beto's here. Hey, puppy. Yeah, hey, puppy. And I say, hello, Pape, back to him. And there are a lot of little Betos here. There's a lot of talented kids here who live on the spot, have seen the likes of Beto come and have seen how kiteboarding has changed the town as well. Now it has proper infrastructure for tourists and for kite people to come on holiday and enjoy, enjoy the town. And I think it's. Yeah, it's pretty amazing, honestly, it's pretty. I've never been anywhere like it. I'll come back for sure.

On the years of the podcast, I've had interviews with Beto, of course, great interviews with Beto, but I actually have spoken to the first people that came there. I don't remember how long ago that was, but if you search Columbia in the search section, there is. There is a story about those guys, how they came. They were given, I think a couple months by the. The. The sort of leader of the tribe. And then when he saw the interaction, he. I think they stayed for like five or six years, quite a long time. But it is an amazing story and better also retells that story. I mean, that better interview is incredible interview. And now I think about it, it is one of the sort of better interviews I've done or one of my more favorite interviews I've done. There's been so many forgetting them, bro. They're just becoming a bit of a blur in my mind.

Better stories. Proper. The story of this town is proper. I will. I haven't listened to that. One of the. The first guys that came here. But to give you guys a little to wet the whistle, essentially, these blokes rocked up and I've met. I've met one of them, met one of the OGs, Alvaro, and there's a guy that now runs a cut school in my apo. But anyway, anyway, these blokes rock up and say, we're gonna create a kite school. We're gonna show you how to do it, and then you guys run it. And yeah, Beto says, like, they taught us about money. They taught us obviously about kiteboarding, but they taught us about like entrepreneurialism and. And tourism and what it could do. And yeah, the fact that. That then put better in the biggest competition on earth and Duo Tone have supported him, it's. It is. It's just an amazing story and I've loved seeing it. I've loved coming here and seeing it for myself.

I hope this Beto documentary that's filmed by Noe, as you were mentioning before, I hope that really shines a bit more light on Beto because I kind of feel like he sort of slipped out of the scene a bit. You know, I think the last time he did competition was the 2023 Red Bull King of the Air. I mean, I think it's been some time since he's done any big. Yeah, Baby Shark knocked him out. Yeah. As Baby Shark called it, the battle of America. But he is a. He is a charismatic dude.

Beto is amazing. I think. Let's chuck in some of his King of the Air interview now so people get a feel.

Just to give some reference here, this was King of the Air 2022. It was in round three. Beto had just beat Timo Boisma and was moving on to his first semi final. This interview was taking place during the Liam versus Heel heat, which is probably one of the best king of their heats of all time. So, yeah, 2022, pretty amazing year. Let's hear from Beto.

You know what I think is cool about that is that those beach guys are given a super tight window. I think 30 seconds. Basically, it's get in, get a reaction, get out, queue up the guys in the booth and get to the next heat. But I think the Red Bull guys handled this perfectly by letting this one just run out and letting Beto have a say. One of the more beautiful moments in the sport. Speaking of interviews, the big dog himself, Roberto Ricci. And I'm gonna have to tell you something so good. I'm gonna have to say something to you. I took it out of the podcast because it didn't really fit, but he said to me at about the middle of the stage, he said, by the way, I listened to the last podcast when you guys said that I've never made a good kite. And I like to disagree. And I was like. I was like, yeah, okay, let's say you haven't made a big, good, big air kite. And he goes, okay, I agree with that. But I just thought it was kind of funny.

Good on him. Good on him for hearing that and still deciding to come on. And I really respect that.

I mean, he basically called Andrea and said, what do you reckon? Andrea was like, absolutely. You know, you have to do this. You know, these are the guys to be with, which is super cool from Andrea, but he was awesome, man. And actually I want to get him back on again because I think it would be interesting to talk about. Are we following the same path? Of path is windsurfing? Because he was invol. He's been involved in windsurfing a long time, you know, like he. And. And. But it didn't feel like the right time. But at the end of it, when we spoke, I think we spoke for like an hour and a half. After the interview, and I said, hey, I'd love to get you back on to do that. And he was like, absolutely, absolutely. So it was super cool. And, you know, he dropped a couple of little sort of Easter eggs there. It's going to be a Lula kite. The name of the kite is going to be the addiction apo4 or apo4 addiction.

I think addiction apo4 is getting his own signature kite. That is epic.

So the Addiction, the Addiction was a kite in the past, and I had the addiction many years ago. It was a racing kite. So it's interesting how he talks about the sort of, the names, like, you start off with the passion, you learn the passion of it, then you get the vision, then you get the obsession with it. And now I wanted to become an addiction. You know, I want you to be addicted to the sport. And I thought it was really cool that he's bringing this name back and to. To go the addiction apo4. And Alula was pretty interesting to hear. Andrea basically said to him, I want to use a Lula. I believe in it. I want the stiffness. You know, he's been talking about the boards really, really great. And if you have. If you haven't listened to the interview, definitely go check it out. I just. Actually, I'll just veer quickly off that. I saw there was a message on Kite forum and Toby. Toby had pulled down that post for me. If the brand doesn't support him, he pulls it down, which kind of pisses me off. He used to send me emails, but he was sending me so many emails saying, I'm pulling this one down now. He just does it without telling me. But that doesn't mean he's pulled the podcast down. It's just not on that. On that. On that forum.

he's got the real passion for kiteboarding back because he's a busy guy. You know, he's got his clothing brand, he's got obviously, you know, a lot of stuff. He loves. He loves the water. But I really feel like this has given him a bit of buzz. And, you know, I said to him, how. How excited are you guys? He's like, man, everyone's pumped, everyone's excited.

And, yeah, it was really cool to hear him talking about just the excitement that this has brought to the company. So that's really great. Yeah, that was really cool to. To have him on. And, yeah, hopefully we'll get some more out of him. Because I think he's got a lot more to offer down the line. Next one is Andrea. Gotta tie that dude down now.

Good luck trying to tame the leopard. I think it's rrd. I want an RRD kite already. I want one RRG just got. Just became so cool overnight to steal the biggest rider in the sport. When he's on, like, he's just, I feel like, evolved into a new version of him that is more gangster, more badass than he was before. I think it's just an epic, epic move, and I really hope Andrea finds a home there and can and can flourish and they support him in his vision, because that kid's got mad vision.

If you listen to the full podcast, and I don't know if you've had a chance to really listen to it yet, he is. I mean, he's basically saying, I'm gonna give him free reign. He can do whatever he wants. That's cool with us. You know, be the wild man that you want to be. Do what you want to do. We want to excite him again, and we want to give him the tools to create. And he's sitting down with the designers already, so, you know, he's saying all the right things. We talk about the orange color. We. We talk about, you know, his. His. His sort of past in the sport.

It was just a really cool interview, and you don't often get the big bosses to come on. So I definitely will tap into him again now that I've sort of opened up that sort of relationship a little bit more. I think before, he just sort of knew. He listened, but he didn't really know us. And, you know, Andrea was very, very kind to say, hey, these are the guys you've got to get involved with, man, if you want to. If you're not with the. I think Andre said, if you're not with these guys, you're nothing. Which I thought was pretty high case.

It's like when there's a new animal at the zoo, man. You know, it's really popular. Everyone keeps going to the zoo. The zoo does all these great deals. Come and see the new leopard. And everyone's like, oh, let's get. But after a while, it gets boring. But I don't think Andre is ever going to get boring. I think he's. He's A leopard that always changes the spots and you know it's going to keep people's interest on. On. On Heat, which is super cool.

I'm flying back on Sunday the 26th. So there's a kite festival here going on in Cabo de la Vella, which I thought I'd be into, but actually I'm not. Turns out I don't like standing around on a beach dancing.

Is it not like a actual kite surfing competition?

It's just like kites flying and then people just like bopping around? Yeah, it's. It's the sort of thing that Reuben Lenton does about twice a month, you know, kite central. Fly him in and he turns up and DJs and for a couple nights and he leaves. It's that. But it's been. I'm glad I was tempted by it because. Been really cool being here. And we've met some amazing young riders. There's one called Talos Mario who has caught my. Do you want to tell the good folk of 365 about Carlos Mar?

He's a young Colombian kid. He was sort of part of the North Next gen program in its initial stages, but just getting gear and trying to service those guys in. In Colombia was super hard. He's been looked after by north in America, has ridden in the GK event before. He's done some. Some of the events at the Tarifa. Full power. Super nice kid. Really talented guy. Yeah. Always had a big smile on his face and I mean has one of the legendary names in kite surfing, you know, in Carlos Mario, which is pretty high case.

I think that's problematic for him. Yeah, it's not good. Yeah. You can't call yourself Carlos Marin. This sport, it's like you may as well. I know, but you may as well call yourself Yuri Zun or Aaron Hadlow or something. It's just not going to work. But the thing is, he's got an epic nickname, Po.

Po is a colloquial nickname meaning handsome or endearing. That's good, isn't it? So I think he should call himself that. But listen, he came up to me on the first night I arrived and was so helpful and welcoming into his town. Is. Yeah. I arrived in the middle of the night. It's kind of not scary, but it's a bit funny. Must be scary. And anyway, he was the first person I encountered. He's really good. He's friends with Baby Shark. Baby Shark came to Cabo de la Villa for a month in, In January when he was between sponsors. Babich loves it here and him and Petrolo stay together. Petrolo doesn't have a kite, and that saddens me. Did you know the extent of it? Do you know he's kiteless at the moment?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, I see him riding all different types of gear and types of boards, but, you know, over the years he's had, like, deals with North. He had a deal with Core for a while, but I just. They're just like. They're just not really great deals. You know, it's. Man, it's super tough to make it from that area of the world. It's difficult to import kites. The big, the big distributors don't want to. Don't want to have to work with people like that. And that's why I said in that north video about Baby Shark. I said, it's so difficult to make it from that part of the world. You have to be exceptional because it's so much easier to foster a kid from Europe who doesn't need the same amount of support, doesn't necessarily have to be as good, but is going to get more exposure because he can make these events. It's. It's really tough on those guys. That's why Beto's accomplishments are even that much more impressive. You know, Baby Shark as well, it's difficult to break out of those, those type of markets. Colombia, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Asia. It's. It's really hard to, to get a. I mean, Egypt as well. I mean, those type of markets is very difficult to, to get out of there and to get some sort of support and to go for it because, you know, those guys can see the benefit of kiteboarding. Right? He's witnessed what kiteboarding can do for a community and he's probably got that hunt and desire and wants it and, man, if I look at my phone, he's probably messaged me a hundred times, but it's tough, you know, real tough, dude. We can give him one of our testing kites. Yeah, we can send him some kites.

I'm always thinking about doing good for the community and we should do good. We. And we are may people. People think we don't do good but we are trying to do good. We've helped people. But the thing is, for me, bro, where's next after that? That's the problem. There is no next, dude. The brands on, the industry's on its knees. They're cutting away the heels. The Zaras, you know, they are going to want freebies now. They want people for free.

It's not so scary. Yeah. Mykonos is brutal, man. There's rolling swell. Nikonos, when we were there, you're surrounded by the world's best. You're showing the water with 30 of the world's best. It's 30 knots. It's gusting over 35 here. It's flat, friendly, nice wind. So, yeah, that's great. It's great here. The food's amazing, Adrian. They've just got a massive abundance of lobsters and fresh fish. Not a vegetable to be had. Not a single vegetable.

The way I like it. The way I like it. I always get a bit worried when I see a lot of lobsters being eaten because I always think, you know, these guys don't believe in fishery prevention or, you know, protecting the fisheries that just eat lobsters every single day of the year. Which does worry me a little bit. But, I mean, as long as they're decent sized lobsters, I'm happy. I'm all about protecting the fish.

Adrian, what about you? What about you all riding over there in sunny Thailand?

Well, I haven't had the chance to ride so much, actually. But I did come back home when I got back from Mykonos, and I don't know if I told you, but I've got a little sneaky brand new board, which I think is gonna give me the fun back in my riding. I'm looking forward to getting on the old reading snack pack.

Yeah, yeah, I've got one. Maybe that's going to be the change in my writing because I've been feeling a little bit flat on my riding recently and I thought, you know what? I'm going to give this. Give this a Go. So yeah, gonna check it out. Gonna bring it to Cape Town this season and do a little bit of wave riding, mate. You know, step away from the old twin tip and just get into. Get into something else. I actually, you know, all the people I've spoken to who have it, I've just said, look, it's just so much fun. So yeah, I'm looking forward to finding a bit of fun back in.
