A
How strong is Van der Spee's neck? It must have been pretty scary riding around. Everyone's on a slightly different rhythm to him.
B
Like you said, dude, I. I love it.
A
And that was the first one he did. And then we made him do some more.
B
Oh, you're going so fast into the wave.
A
The gong's got second lift for days.
B
Got some drills and I would have drilled the moon boot to the board.
A
Could we have got some seriously powerful painkillers?
B
If you had to choose between Mark and Hugo, who would you go for? Catastrophic equipment failure.
A
Going for the boogie loop double just to get the landing.
B
Had a couple of str and it was extremely dangerous.
A
Guys, I sent the trap and it.
B
Is gold for Ellie Aldridge and gold for Great Britain.
A
What do you want to start with?
B
Well, let's start with the GKA Junior Big Air, which happens in St. Peter, ordering on the 20th to the 24th, which is basically. Which is next week. I just got the lists of the riders set in, Colin, and it's incredible. The. There's under 19, boys, under 16 boys, under 16 girls, under 14 boys, mate. There's a total of 65 junior riders signed up for this Big Air series that they're going to do in Germany next week. Incredible numbers. Just to give you some reference, the Qatar event, the freestyle event at the end of last year had nine men and seven women. This has got 65 young boys and young girls who are. Who are desperate to ride. And I think it's going to be incredible. Like, the under 19 fleets is looking sick. It's just looking crazy.
A
So this is a throwback to the PKA days, which was the freestyle championship, when freestyle was at its height. And I remember stories about torn bridge, having to go through qualifying and you turn up in Germany for a qualifier and there would be more than 100 kids there. So, Big Air, this is, for me, the first year that the Big Air World Championship is properly done. Juniors there's done years before, but this is sounding. This is sounding on a scale we haven't really seen in Big Air before. What were the dates again? I'm looking at the forecast right now.
B
Well, yeah, look at the forecast. It's the 20th to the 24th. Unfortunately, the forecast doesn't look great. It actually looks like the wind kicks in from the 25th, which is kind of a bit disappointing. But I think the under 14, under 16 girls, you can probably get done while you look at that forecast. Colin, let me talk a little bit about some of the riders who are going to Be taking part. Aya Kasabova, she's riding in the under 16 girls. She's ranked ninth in the GK. That's by the way, above people like Natalie Lambreck, Alyssa, Alyssa Minch, stuff like that. So it's awesome to see senior girls, even though IR is only 15 years old, come down and want to ride these events. I think to be an under 16 big air world champion looks great on the CV and I think it's an awesome opportunity. And under 16 boys, a name you'll see there is Maxwell Dahl, he's riding there. But the under 19 boys is where it gets pretty serious. We've got Elliot Bhutan, Martin Kabulski, Finn Flugel, Shahar Sabri, Leonardo Casadi and Martin Reynal. I mean Shah's ranked seventh in the world, Leonardo's ranked fourth in the world. I mean these guys haven't been king of the air, but I mean for sure Leonardo is going to be in for sure Shahar Sabre is going to be in Finn Flugelby. And so it's awesome to see high level, top level competition wanting to do this. I, I love this. I mean I always think find that under 19, under 20 categories a really interesting one because arguably you can be in the best of the world in that age group and I always feel like it's a, a category in all sports that sort of left behind. But it's great to see the Shahs, the Leonardo, the Martins, the Finn, the, you know, these guys drop down Elliot Bhutan and want to win this title and, and they probably see the value in that. And I, I think for guys looking for sponsorship and for careers to be a junior world, Junior world champion, I think it's still a big price and.
A
It'S something that his brother Lorenzo never was.
B
You'd have to think Leonardo, Shahar and Finn are going to be favorites for the under 19 boys title. But that under 19, there's 32 boys alone in that one division. So some of those guys are unfortunately going to miss out unless there's some qualifying series. I mean that isn't that awesome bro, to see, I mean that many young boys and girls who want to get into the sports still, you know, unfortunately at the, junior, at the, if we look at the freestyle, you know, youth freestyle competition last year they had a tere for event they had 28 riders across four or five divisions. So there is still some interest in freestyle but it's not the same there. You know, they only had three girls in the other 16s and you know, most of those Guys are in the under 14 men, so it's a big change here. Like you said, dude, I. I love it. I love the fact that these. These are the names for the future. And if there is going to be a live stream, which I don't know, I'll definitely check it out because, you know, you're going to see people who are going to be in King of the Air in the next sort of three or four years for sure.
A
Is it in alignment with the big trade event they do there?
B
I assume so.
A
I assume that's why it's such a small win window.
B
Yeah, yeah, I assume so. Yeah.
A
So that's a lot of their costs already covered because the infrastructure's all already there. Well, the forecast looks. But I hope it improves and yeah, we're actually going to cross our fingers for that. How strong is Vanderspae's neck with a little.
B
With Jetto hanging off the back of it? Like, I understand what Jetto's. Why he got a real fright and you could actually see he got a real fright there. He was scared because, you know, when you're out of control falling from 10 meters, it must have been pretty scary.
A
So we're referring to the moment in episode four where Jetto is riding Vanderpe like a backpack. And then at the apex of the jump. Let's go. But let's go a little bit after the apex in reality. And actually just sort of strangles Jason for a little bit there before tumbling down to the ground onto. On his side. He was really frightened. Yeah. And that was the first one he did. And then we made him do some more.
B
Of course, the interesting. I love the line. I want to give some context to the listeners. When Jetta was doing the double loop, Mark always was saying to Jetta, you've got to ride faster. Jetto, you're riding too slow. And I think you and I have spoke about that before. He's quite a slow rider and it was really interesting to hear him saying to Jason, oh, you're going so fast into the wave. And that. That's interesting. Right? Because when you watch the top pros hit a kicker, I mean, they are pedal to the floor as hard as they can and sending that kite as hard as they can. That's the difference between, you know, getting up those heights. So it was interesting to hear Jetto's reaction to the fact that he felt like they were going faster than he's normally used to.
A
Yeah, yeah. He does ride unbelievably, he dangerously slowly, not just in the sense that because he's riding slow and then when he does pop, it's more downwind and he doesn't have the kite in the right position as a result. But also just like riding around, everyone's on a slightly different rhythm to him because he's going so slow. So there's like people, you know, trying to judge whether they've got enough gap or not and thinking he's going faster and landing on. Almost on top of him. Whatever he's like, it's always Jetto that is getting his kite tangled or running, going into someone, or it's just always him causing the chaos. So, yeah, I think that pretty well explains it, doesn't it? Do you think that it was possible, with a little bit more composure, to perform a nice, nice little somersault on the way down?
B
I don't know about the front. I think maybe the back one might have. I was actually hoping that Jason was going to go for a kite loop with Jet on his back. I would like to seen that. Was that, was that discussed?
A
No, he's on a 15 meter fly. Surfer soul or something ridiculous.
B
So it's not going to happen.
A
No. Sonic. He was on a Sonic. Massive Sonic. So, yeah, that was never on the cards. Who's one scarier for you, Jettos or Pete's? Pete, of course, hits his apex and then actually ejects his kite.
B
I tell you what was amazing. I don't think I've ever seen a kite fly like that across the bay. It was beautiful.
A
The gong's got second lift for days, hasn't it?
B
Incredible. It actually went like. You know when you make a crappy dart and you throw it and it actually turns out to be perfect and you're like, look at it go. Look at it go. It was. It was a bit like that. It just kept on floating and floating and floating. Maybe with the, maybe with the, the lines in the water or whatever it was, just gave it that extra balance. But I don't think I've ever seen a kite float like that. It was literally like it was turned upside down and a big giant had thrown it as a dart. But yeah, it was. It was pretty. It was pretty funny. Pete ejecting. I think Steezy Pete's. I think Jetto's one is more dangerous.
A
Why?
B
I think at any stage you don't really have any support, you know, with the, with, with just to eject, you're in control of stuff. I think Jetto is out of control. The whole time he's at the mercy of somebody else. So that's why he hung on so long. That's why he didn't let poor Jason go and twisted his neck. But yeah, I think the ejection one is. It's kind of impressive actually, when I think about it as well. He's lucky he didn't get that bloody big hand up his ass.
A
So you're. You'd prefer to do the ejection?
B
I think so, yeah.
A
You reckon you've got it in you to actually trigger pull and get rid of it at the highest point?
B
I think I would probably already be like he was riding without. He's riding without safety, right? I mean, he's only jumping and then he's just. He's just letting the kite go and releasing. I think that's probably. I think that's probably safer.
A
What I don't like about that though is what if you do accidentally. What if the ejection sort of send. Sends you into a little flail? You could easily just end up coming down on your side or. And that really would not be good. And I think, although Jetto gets it horribly wrong and he does end up on his side, I think if he actually didn't bottle it as hard and just let go at the right moment, I think he could have had a more. What does Pete say? A nice clean entry to the water.
B
Graceful entry, you reckon?
A
I think he could have.
B
Colin, do you remember back in the day, Cameron Westerman was doing those big unhooked kite loops? I mean, I do horribly scary stuff. I mean, if something went wrong, you. You potentially just going to get just thrown into the sea. I. I guess Peter's a little bit of that situation where if something, I mean, at some stage he's going to have to take his hands off the bar to release. Right? He probably did a double handed release because he's soft, which means the kite could have easily gone to one side and then, you know, flicked him off. I think to get reference to that, we should probably have those guys do at least 10 each and then see which one's worse next time. So next time I do a stunt, we need to get them to do 10 so we can get some data to realize which one's worse.
A
Good idea, Agent. We need some sort of spreadsheet, don't we? We do.
B
We need a spreadsheet. No broken legs. Yeah, the broken leg. The broken leg news was. Was heartbreaking, wasn't it?
A
Indeed. That was a weekend. I think we've already covered this, though, on the podcast.
B
We didn't really. We sort of got into a little bit. But, I mean, it was, it was, it came out when I, I, When I watched it, I was, I was, it was sad to see that Peter broke. We didn't obviously get any footage of him break his leg. Was. There was. There's no footage on that.
A
There's abs. No, he did it on his day off in about 10 knots, mate.
B
What did I tell you? No day offs. You got to keep these guys working. There's no day offs and there's no doubts in film.
A
But it was Christmas Day that was the problem.
B
Okay. Fair Christmas Day, Christmas Day break is a person who's an idiot.
A
Yeah. And then because I thought it was a sprained ankle, we just went to the Christmas party and then he sort of just sat in the corner in quite a lot of pain, looking confused and putting some ice on it. And of course it was a broken leg.
B
So we did speak.
A
The ice didn't really help. Yeah, we did. We did. We rang you.
B
I did say that. It sounds like he might have done the same thing. Broken the fibula. Cracked the fibula. Because that ankle did not look good.
A
It was yellow. It did not. It was, it was like an elephant man's ankle. We were like, nah, that's a sprain. That's a, that's a nasty sprain. But nothing more.
B
It, like you've been using iodine as the, as the, as the ice. I mean, it was all brown and yellow and it was just not looking good. But it's not looking. Anyway, I saw Pete dancing a few weeks back. He's totally fine, everybody, so get over it.
A
So, yeah, whilst we thought it was a sprained ankle, we had, we were all. This whole thing was meant to be done in Namibia. We're meant to drive to Namibia. That was the road to pro. So at this point, we were like, I reckon you can ride on that, Pete, in Namibia. Just, you know, take it easy. Which obviously we wouldn't have. And then we didn't go to Namibia, but we bloody well will at some point. We bloody well will.
B
You know what I would have done if I was there? I would have, I would have got as moon boot and I would have just got some drills and I would have drilled the moon boot to the board. Now that would have been seriously good tv. So he's like, go out on the moon boot, mate. Because he's fully protected in the moon boot, to be honest, he's. He's 100% safe. That's why he got him There he.
A
Would have needed a lot more painkillers. Could we have got some seriously powerful painkillers?
B
It's Africa, bro. We could have got him anything he wants.
A
We would have had him completely off his tits out there. Kite boarding in a moon boot. Yeah, lope it now.
B
He'd probably break his woo with that moon boot. You know, a little bit of woosting.
A
Get it up there, get it up there. Exactly. Get it up there. So I reckon I, at the time when I saw Pete do his stunt, I was like, that's the highest I've ever seen him go. And he bloody ejects it. But then upon reviewing the footage, I see that that was a bit of a miss sight because in the original Rotor Megaloop series, he does jumps like 17 meters or something. On one of them he just gets one lucky gust from hell, ends up sky high. So that was. It was stupid on my part, but I'll accept that.
B
I love Jason's face when it comes to anything that's above Pete's level. Pete, Jason's just like rolled out, really. I didn't see that. I love it. Just, just the ultimate confidence in, in Peter Jason. Jason loves him with all his heart, but doesn't believe a word he's saying. Which is. Which is really what, what you want. Which is what you want from your mentor. Right.
A
I'm working on a carousel Instagram post. That is all of those moments, just.
B
Pete rolling, just Jason rolling his eyes.
A
It's going to be like six or seven long, I would say.
B
Colin, on next week's Megapod, you and I are going to be announcing the final six riders for the Red Bull Megaloop. We have 10 already registered. Red Bull will be announcing it on the 22nd, so we have a whole 24 hour window where you can find those first, those final six riders here on the Megapod, which is going to be super cool just to go over those first 10 guys. Andrea Principe, Lorenzo Casadi, Jeremy Blando, Cohen Van Dyke Heel Vlute, Jamie Overbeek, Jason Van Der Space, Dean Mo Luca Trudy and Jet Bradshaw. So we've got six more riders to find. I'm super interested actually to see who they choose. I mean, the Megaloop generally can be a little bit sort of loyal to the sort of older riders, but it would be super cool to see. I'd love to see Hugo Wiggersworth and these young guys come in or, you know, I'd love to see Baby Shark there to get a. Get a chance and ride so it'll be super interesting to see what direction they go. Not a big fleet, only a fleet of 16. It's the smallest of all the big air fleets. Has quite a different format which we'll go into as we get closer to that. And the win window will open on the first for quite a different short window than we've ever had in the past. So, yeah, quite a different. Different mega loop this year. But I'm hoping that this is going to be the change that's going to bring the mega loop back to that event that always was, which is one of the majors.
A
Aaron Hadlow's gonna be his. His return to competition as well, surely. Put Aaron in. He looks short lines. He loves it and we love it. Everyone loves it.
B
Is he gonna have the video?
A
Yes. He put that thing out the. The other day. It's him and Seb Porrell in Cape Town. Him just sticking it so low you can't believe it.
B
Said Poirot. Mate, Sid Porrel's gone to Polo, but he's still, still putting out videos. He put out that Mika video the other day. He's got the Bruner video. He's become like the. He's become the little mini documentarian.
A
Yes. He's referring to Liam Whaley's former vlogmaster, who is now shooting for all sorts of different bits. Yeah. Put Aaron in. Get Big Marky J in. I honestly think that. Yeah, do it, do it.
B
If you had to choose between Mark.
A
And Hugo, who would you go for in this event? Mark. You want Mark and I. Yeah, for low. For this. Yeah. Mark. Has Hugo even been on short lines?
B
Yeah, he's. He's done the. He's done the high five. Short line comp.
A
Did he?
B
Of course.
A
Well, it wasn't in the bloody heats that I saw.
B
No. He went out early, got ripped off.
A
Exactly.
B
I love, I love, I love Hugo. If it doesn't go his way, I got ripped off, but which is cool because that fires him up. You know, I love that. I would really like to see Baby Shark in this as well and I'd love to see know some young guys get a chance and. And you know, we. I felt like in the past with the mega loop, it got a bit stale like Cota in the. In the. In those days. But, you know, we've got so many. It's just going to be an exciting fleet and I hope this, I hope this new direction with the shorter lines and. Yeah.
A
18 meter lines for. For. To those of you that haven't remembered that 18.
B
Also going to name the six ladies as well. Six ladies, so. Which means the only big competition that doesn't have ladies at the moment is Cold Hawaii. So we're slowly getting in the right direction, I think.
A
Yeah. Yeah.
B
Do you think cold. Why will do that down the in the future? Oh, that's. Surely they will, right?
A
I think it'll get to the point where they don't really have an option. Do you want to know who I've been direct messaging?
B
Okay, let me guess. You've been direct. Is it someone that I know or someone that I don't know?
A
You certainly know him.
B
I could be anyone. Who have you been direct mess if I certainly know him.
A
Just think about when what's happening next week and therefore who I might be chasing.
B
What's happening next week?
A
Test of your intelligence and your ability to piece things together.
B
It's happening next week.
A
Don't edit all this hesitation and no, no, no, no, no stupidity out.
B
Give me one more clue next week, man. A lot's happening. You going on holiday.
A
Think about what's happening next week in the world of kiteboarding. Major. It's a major headline. Okay, go. I'm just gonna say it here. Adrian.
B
Yeah.
A
You are not on my WOO Worlds team.
B
Are you talking WOO Worlds?
A
This is the fact that you can't even. You didn't even remember that the team registration is next week. Is everything I need to hear to say that you're.
B
You're just.
A
Your head is not in it. And if I remember back. If I remember back two years previous, Adrian, I remember you doing absolutely nothing.
B
Actually, Colin, you've never posted anything in Woowall, so shut the fuck up.
A
That's not true. That's not true. That's not true. I once drove three hours just to clock a load of kilometers on that. Didn't even end up in the top five. So it was completely pointless.
B
Actually, Colin, I'll just correct you then. If you're a team captain, the Woowards registration opens this Friday. You'll receive an email. So as a team captain from previous years, you'll actually be allowed to register your team three days early. And then from Monday they will be open for new teams. So yeah, I mean it's.
A
You're gonna have to form a new team, mate. You're not on mine. You're not on mine.
B
No problems. No problems. We'll go head to head winning team.
A
I thought you were going to be more upset about that.
B
Who are you talking to anyway? I mean, I mean, who are you talking to there.
A
I thought you were going to be more upset. I wanted you to be like.
B
No, no, you. You were talking like. You were talking like it was going to. I. Dude, I was thinking big. I was thinking. I was thinking, who's he been talking to?
A
Is there Lewis Hamilton or.
B
No. I mean, I literally was racking my brain outside of this tiny little sport that we love. We were laughing that, you know, when we're in uk, that this whole sport we cover, we cover literally about 30 people. And I was thinking of those 30 people. Who is that important? I was thinking big, man. I actually literally was thinking tennis. I was thinking, shit. He's been talking to. He's been texting sinner.
A
No, I'll tell you who I've been texting. Hugo Wigglesworth. And he is proving a. He's living up to his wiggly sort of worm. Wiggly worm sort of.
B
He's. Dude, you'd be very tough to get him away from the Flying Kiwis, right?
A
This is, this is the current. This is what I've said, bro. Woo. Worlds, I make you team leader. What you think? Question mark. 7. No, 10, 25 on Sunday. He says, I think I'd be banned from the New Zealand beaches. Monday, 6:20, I say, is that a yes? Tuesday, 4:30am, he goes, I gotta stick with the Kiwis. Kiwi emoji, full stop. 6am that day, two hours later, I say 200 New Zealand dollars and the motherfucker's left me on scene. So let me just. This is. You're hearing, you're gonna hear this. The offer's gone up. It's now 300 New Zealand dollars.
B
300 New Zealand dollars, mate.
A
Dude, he should just take that. That's a good deal.
B
He's not going to leave that team.
A
You should take that.
B
Who did we try and buy last time we tried?
A
Jamie.
B
Jamie. Yeah, that was also. He just laughed.
A
He's also an idiot. He should just take, like, why would you not just take that money? Just take it then. Ride your ass off, dude.
B
You know, it's, it's funny. Their last, their scores last year were massive. Right, let me just. Hang on, let me just pull this up where I can do. Last year the Flying kiwis won with 137.9 meters, which an average of 27.6 across the five. But the highest one was the year before was SpaceX, who won't be involved. 155, an average of 31. 31 meters, which is absolutely crazy. But yeah, we, unfortunately we don't get to see SpaceX in the competition these days, which is a little bit disappointing. Maybe they should make a comment.
A
Run from a fight, haven't they? That's the thing.
B
They never recovered, right? That never recovered. Cheating scandal.
A
The monks really took it to them. And then, I mean, there was no. You know, you just don't bounce back from that kind of thing. Do you? Like when you get flawed, sometimes it's best just to continue lying down.
B
The rumors are that Timo Martin has got a foil and he's been. He's been going crazy doing like massive foil days. And I think that. Oh, actually interesting though, I saw Evan Klein has put out a video where he. He foiled for 24 hours straight. Or was it 24 or 12 hours? Like what, the video. The video is not out yet. But I saw that he did a full day's kite. He had a whole bunch of issues with his ears. Yeah, with the dark. With a boat. I. I just saw his. I just saw his post. But I think I'll get him on kite 036 in a few weeks to talk about that because that sounds like it. That sounds like it was pretty cool. But the video actually hasn't come out right at the moment, so I can hear Colin frantically typing to Evan right now, bro.
A
Woo. World's team, question mark. Question mark. If that doesn't entice him, I don't know what will. That's going to get the. The blood pumping, you know. The heart will begin to soar. No doubt. That's the sort of commitment I'm looking for, you see. Driving, driving. Kiting while driving first and then kiting, no doubt, through the night. That's not something you'd do, is it? That's not something that any of your measly team are going to do either.
B
We'll see.
A
Who are these?
B
I don't know. I just. Well, since you banned me from the Shipmunks, I'm gonna have to. I've got. What day is it? Friday. I got one day to find a team.
A
No, because the windows. The windows open for a while, but you go near any of my shipmunks and I will come down on you incredibly hard. You can get. You could get Michelle Sky Haywood. You seem to mention her, mate.
B
His skin's looking radiant, Dude.
A
Now, Shipmunks, if you want to join my team, sounded like Monday is go time, so, you know, I will be refreshing. Hang on, there's speakerphone going off. I will be spending the weekend updating our logo, our organizational culture. Of course it's a top down. It's strictly a top down sort of structure we work with where I just lead by example and the rest just go and head out of the bloody park.
B
Right, that was Colin's pitch. Let me, Let me tell you the flaws in Colin's team. Number one, he keeps all the money. He doesn't pay anyone else. So people don't want to. That's not true.
A
I do. I do. Once I'm forced to.
B
Hey, I haven't got a team yet, but if you want to join my. If you. I know why made you. If you want to join my team, which is not. Doesn't really exist at the moment, you can send me a message on my Instagram and I will invite you to the team that's yet to be named.
A
Okay. And we need some sort of forfeit. I want you to. Because I don't do best with you, bro.
B
Because you don't pay.
A
Say again?
B
You know I'm not doing any more bits with you because you don't pay.
A
Oh, yeah, I was meant to do a kite that said I'm a twat on it.
B
But you didn't do that one. And I did the kite. I. I paid the SpaceX365 boys back. And they were.
A
Imagine getting Harlem to do a custom I'm a twat guide.
B
Dude, we don't know they're going to Harlem. We're only only guessing, but that would be cool. I'm a twat.
A
I'm a twat kite. Okay, but what is the forfeit gonna be?
B
We'll think about it for next week.
A
Yeah, yeah. I'm gonna give it some deep thought as well. Yeah. Okay. Well, good luck with your little team. Hope that goes great. Are you gonna call yourselves the Weasels?
B
That's a good name. The Weasels.
A
Adrian's Weasels.
B
We'll see. We'll see. All right. If you want to join my team, message me. It's gonna be a better team. It's gonna be a more. It's not top down approach. We're an all inclusive approach. We're doing stuff differently.
A
Top down, brother. Trickle down effect.
B
We're full up from the bottom.
