Road To Pro Episode 1 is out on the site right now. Steezy Pete wearing a Red Bull hat. In Japan with Jason and Jetto, it's carnage. They get stuck in updrafts. But that is weirdly not the biggest news in kiteboarding because Jamie Overbeat's gone and claimed the Wu world record once again with 42.3 meter belter. We're going to hear from him, we're going to dissect it, give it some context. And, yeah, it's a bank holiday, but we're still doing this because we love.
Jamie Overbeak
Catastrophic equipment failure. Going for the boogaloo double just to get the landing.
Pete
Had a couple of strings and it was extremely dangerous.
Colin
Guys, I found the trap and it
Jamie Overbeak
is gold for Ellie Aldridge and gold for Great Britain.
Colin
Haven't done one of these emergency ones in quite a long time. And we could have, let's face it, pulled the trigger a couple days ago when Clement fluked his.38. We're calling that a fluke, by the way, because we've looked at the rest of his woo scores and they're not anywhere near that for the rest of the time. And then Jamie got the twin to beat that. So Clement held the twin tip record anyway. Right. Then Clement beat his own record and then Jamie beat Clement's record and then we almost did it and then we thought, no, no, because we're not rookies, are we, Adrian? We go to rodeos all the time.
Adrian
Yeah, I think we looked, took a look at it and think, oh, maybe something's going to happen here, which I'm glad we didn't do. So you are getting this a day late. But he bloody. And Jamie. No, we don't jump the gun where we're like, if you look up people who stick within the rules. There's a picture of me and Colin right there.
Colin
Yeah, we go just after the gun. Just.
Adrian
We go on the gun. On the gun. The split second, anyway, on it is this.
Colin
I am the gun.
Adrian
Let's focus on the. On the emergency episode, mate. Jamie is in a purple patch of form. I mean, I just feel like Jamie can do no wrong. If there was back to back world championships and next weekend was going to be the second round in Mykonos, I think most people should just pack up and not turn up. Jamie's just in unbelievable form at the moment.
Colin
Jamie effectively would go around the little windy paddock of Barcarez, just bloody de Panting people. It'd just be pulling trousers down, just slapping asses, slapping them wherever he went. That's effectively what he's done here. Took out Lords of Tramp, beat everyone in the world Woo record and then another Woo record, then the actual WOO record. Let's just be straight here.
Unidentified Guest
I don't really care if someone beats a twin tip record and it's not the actual world record. I don't, I've done too many of these and I don't think anyone else really cares either. Do you want to be the one that's gone higher than anyone else has ever.
Adrian
You're right. I mean, and also he did this in front of all the big players. Hugo was there another multiple time holder of this record. And you know what's really cool is it's great to see Jamie back there and you and I have spoken to Jamie on and off over the last two years and that Woo record is something that he's always wanted back. I just feel like, you know, after he left Ozone he had the edge. It was a prolific chance jumping kite. He's never really connected with another kite. That's got him up there regularly connecting to this Rebel D lab. He seems super dialed into that kite in this. And I'm going to preface this by saying in this location off Flat Water. I think that's the best way to say it.
Colin
Shall we hear from him? Because that's, I think that's why people have tuned into this. They maybe haven't tuned in to listen to. Just before we go, can we just say guys, road to pro drops today. By the time you're hearing this, it is out is featuring Steezy Pete, Jason Vanderspay, Jessica Kwano in Japan and they get caught in updrafts. Need I just need not say anything more.
Interviewer
Did you look at the forecast and were you like there's maybe potential for more there?
Jamie Overbeak
When I was looking at the forecast, I was like, this is going to be a nice 40 knots or 35. 40 knots. Training day. I arrived in. I was there end of the morning like around 11 and I started doing some coaching with someone on the water. So I was coaching and the wind was so bad, the direction was off. It was like, I would say 10 to 10 to 40 knots literally. But you can have that here and it can be good. But it was really bad, like nothing happened and it was crowded on the water. So I was just coaching for a bit. After that I was gonna do the coaching a little bit more than an hour. But I said at an hour, okay, we will do the rest another time because the conditions were so bad. So we Went back to the car at the parking. I was gonna eat some bread because we were already there because I was gonna coach. So it was just filling up my stomach for the session later to have, like, getting the carbs in. And at one point, I was finishing my last breath. And at one point it was like the sand was flying like 10 meters high over the beach. And I was like, what the fuck is happening? And then I saw Jason going out on his eight. And he was just coming back. He said, it's too scary. It's too much. It's impossible. It was that much water, was flying like 10, 15 meters high over the water. And I said to the guys, okay, I'm going to pump. And I was like, I'm not scared for this. And I was. First I thought no one was there to go out with me. So then I couldn't go out because it's too dangerous. And then I looked to my back, and then Stein Mills, you know, kiteboarding, he was coming with a 7 meter. So I gave him a hug. He was like my savior to get out on the water. So, yeah, then I went out with him on the water. So. Because I wasn't going alone, how good it would be. I wasn't going alone. It's like gusting up to 60 knots.
Interviewer
There's no safety out there. There's no safety.
Jamie Overbeak
No, no. No safety at all. If you up, you up. Yeah. So, yeah, then we went out, and it was just. Sometimes the wind was dropping to 15 knots, and sometimes it was 60 plus again. So what I was doing at this spot, you're riding and there's a small channel, and through the channel, you can look like a few kilometers upwind. And you just would see, like, the smoke coming like 20 meters high. From our 15 meters high, you could see it coming. So sometimes I was just waiting there for five minutes and only looking up the channel to wait till I saw the smoke coming again. And then I made sure that I was getting my place there and no one was going to jump before me. So then I would just sit there in the water and keep my space. And as soon as, like that 60 knots hit, I would make speed and just go for the jump. So I was constantly looking up at the channel to see if it was coming.
Interviewer
How are you trying to time it? Were you trying to, like, have it come over the bank there right as you were edging?
Jamie Overbeak
I was trying to do two things. So the bank is about, like. It's like 100 meters to the other side. So what I was trying to do is as soon as I saw that at the other side. So at the 100 meters at the other side of the land, I saw like the smoke over there or like the water, the spray. As soon as I saw it there I was like making as much speed as possible. And then as soon as like the 60 knot gust hit, I, I, I would, I would go for my takeoff. So that was kind of the strategy. It was, was insane.
Interviewer
And so during this session, Clement was on the water as well, right? Was he, Was he later?
Jamie Overbeak
He joined just after my 42. Just five minutes after my 42, he joined.
Interviewer
And anyone else? Was it the three of you? Is there anyone else?
Jamie Overbeak
Hugo was out, Finn was out. Let me think. Yes. Stein was out first. Like one guy on a slingshot at one point, but not in the beginning. And I think that was about it. All the other pros just stayed at the beach because it was so scary. The conditions, like, when I would jump at like one of my biggest jumps, I saw like the water sprouts, like down there at random places, like at like 10, like in a rounding of like 10 meters. It was scary as hell. And also one thing to mention, I did like 40 jumps and didn't crash one of them. Not even a butt check speed that
Interviewer
you come down with and the timing of that kite coming around.
Jamie Overbeak
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was just trying to like do the big jump and then put it totally to the left sheet out completely, and then the, in the end, just make a big loop. And then I had like clean landings every time with how I did it.
Colin
Wow.
Jamie Overbeak
I always do it, but it gets that strong. I do my landings like this. So I land with like zero speed or. Yeah, the minimum possible.
Interviewer
And so did you go in after that or did you stay out?
Jamie Overbeak
I stayed out for I think, one and a half hour more.
Interviewer
Because you didn't do a Clement where you just were you just beeline it for the, the beach?
Jamie Overbeak
No, no, no, no, no. I, like, the guys were all coming to me. Like Jason and Keena were coming to me. And I just told them, I think I can go bigger. I think I, I think I can do better. So I tried for one and a half hour more, and at one point the wind got a little bit gustier and a little bit less liftier, and I was getting a bit tired after, like, I was out for two and a half hours, I think about two and a half hours straight in those conditions. But I also did my, like, my energy management. I did it very well on the water because a lot of guys were just jumping, jumping, jumping. I was only jumping if the 16 knot gust was hitting. And otherwise I was just like cruising with my kite fully depowered. And so it could take more than five minutes for me, like maybe even once, like 10, 15 minutes for me to make a jump because I was like, okay, I need every good gust and I can better just skip all the other stuff, not go for the loops and only save my energy for those big jumps when the gust hits.
Interviewer
Is there something changing in the equipment or is it. Do you guys just have more confidence in like this much wind and are those related at all?
Jamie Overbeak
I think we as riders are getting even better. So our takeoffs are getting better than before for sure because everyone is pushing each other and we're only getting better and better. But also the equipment is getting better and tuned better for the stronger winds because like the top models like the Rebel D Lab, it's also working good for like, I think a lot of people, people just need to try it if they like it. But the brands are also now making more products for like pro riders. So it's like tunes perfectly for a rider like me. And the kite is able to handle those conditions very well. So a couple years back, kites were more tuned like those, you didn't have the Alula kites and stuff. And those kites were also really tuned for the whole market. And now these top end models are tuned for like these things to be able to do these things. So the tuning is also changing. So it's a combination of us getting better, the, the kite boards getting better and the kite's getting better.
Adrian
You know, we spoke in the post show about Jamie going 26 foot, 28 tricks on lords of Tram. What about him? Talk about not crashing a single trick all day. Not crashing a single thing all day. That's when you know, you know, we spoke at the top about being inform and just feeling like you're dialed into your gear and we, we spoke a bit at the road aboard and we'll speak more about that later. Dialed into that kite and with his Linesmith lines, he's in the perfect position right now. He's in the matrix.
Colin
Reasonably large jump up as well, from 40 meters to 42.3. That's a 5.75% increase. That's quite large. He's gone 2.3 meters higher than anyone else has ever.
Adrian
And I think the cool thing as well, as I said, it's in front of prolific big jumpers. I bet no one's out there saying, no, that wasn't big because everyone would have seen that, everyone would have witnessed that. All the cameras would have been ready.
Colin
So when Charles Bridal had his 37.2 on a foil and then Hugo beat it with a 40, that was a 2.8 meter increase. And I remember saying, ain't nobody going to. Hugo is going to hold this for ages because it's such a big gap. And now I look pretty stupid.
Adrian
As I said a million times, you cannot doubt Jamie Overbeak. I remember in the battle royale we were going to write out the check, we were going to write out for Luke Dixon. I said to Arlen Alan, I know Jamie, I know it's five minutes to go. And course what happened one minute Jamie poster and Jamie jumps into first place. And all the people out there playing fantasy always remember that you can have a bet against Jamie over big, let's put it that way.
Colin
What's next for the bloke? He's gonna, he's gonna cruise home, isn't he?
Adrian
Yeah. It sounds like he's been doing a lot of coaching actually, so I'm glad he's enjoying that.
Colin
Sorry, how fucking sorry to swear. We're trying not to this year. How epic is that? These coaching. He doesn't have a sponsor, no one's paying his salary. He has to go and coach idiots. He's coaching mugs right now. It's got. I don't, I don't know what he's charging but it's surely not enough. He's the best kite border on earth right now. And guys, go, if you, if you're in France right now or you live in the north of Holland, do Jamie Overbeak a favor and go and sign up for some of this bloody service he's providing. All right? Go and get expensive, yeah? Jamie put your price up and everyone go and get in line. Unbelievable. It's the equivalent. It's the equivalent of Aaron Hadlow dishing out some Rayleigh to blind Advice back in 2009. It's the same thing. Or Yuri Zoon 2011.
Jamie Overbeak
Yeah.
Colin
Do you want to. I'll show you a back roll to toe side. It's the same shit.
Adrian
I was going to say something then, Colin. Sometimes coaching can be a great tool for yourself to sort of remind you of the basics and do those basics well. And I always find that like, you know, sometimes when you do some coaching and I think it improves your place. So I hope this is working for Jamie. I'm super happy that he's this, yeah, this, this form that he's in doesn't seem like he's going to slow down, but again, let's see what happens when he gets into competition. Again, a lot of pressure on him and dealing with that pressure is going to be the next step because as I said the other day, he's been in the situation before, so is Pippa Vo. Now we've got Alyssa Mench in the situation. It's very difficult to be the early runner and keep that momentum right through to the back of that World Championship. So this is just another step for, for Jamie, really.
Colin
I just thought of another funny Jamie Overbeak thing. So a couple years ago, the Overbeak family would all turn up with Team Overbeak hats and I was like, give me one of those bloody hats. Like, do you know how much I've talked about your ass on the Internet? I deserve a hat. Make me a hat. So then they made me one that said Team Overbeak on the front and then number one fan on the side. And then whenever we went away with the trap, I would wear it. And the look on those Italian boy's faces when I was wearing my Teemo Vig number one fan hat. Crack up. It was so funny. Remember when we gave him the. Oh, we're gloating here. We're just, we're just saying how, how our foresight is. Let's just not do that. Yeah, we did give him that and we were bloody right too, weren't we?
Adrian
If you do want to see something funny, go back on YouTube. Look at the first Whaley's. I think it's 2020. Look at, look at Jamie Overbeck in there. You. You'll actually laugh your ass off because he is just a little boy with glasses and he's just turned into a big man who is just fulfilling destiny, really. But yeah, Woo's back in Jamie's hands. I think he loves it. I think he enjoys it. He's always thrived on those roles and. Yeah, onwards and upwards for Jamie Overbeaker, I think.
Colin
Right, one more road to pro thing, guys. One more road to pro. We're going to play a little sound clip now. This is Pete, because obviously we did our big announcement. He's joined Red Bull. Whether they like it or not, he's joined them and he is sold so many drinks since. And they owe, they do owe him. He should invoice them. Although it's only been 48 hours since our big announcement. And yeah, here is Pete talking about his big sponsorship.
Pete
Yeah, well, Obviously, you guys haven't seen me in a little while, and after the success of last season, I've been asking about having a few conversations.
Colin
Look, it looks real.
Jamie Overbeak
Yeah, yeah.
Pete
Yeah, it should do.
Colin
How much did it cost?
Pete
I don't know. I had to sign a contract. Does that count?
Jamie Overbeak
How big is the contract?
Pete
Sizable. Unfortunately, the contract states are not allowed to disclose how big the contract is, so.
Interviewer
Yeah.
Pete
Were there numbers involved in the contract? Yeah, they were large.
Colin
Many numbers.
Pete
Big numbers. In the end, genuinely contracted. Genuinely contracted. Signed, signed. Money, ink on the page. And who's paying who?
