Hour number two, Kentucky Sports Radio, 859-280-2287 Text Machine 772-7745-2544 One person writes, Matt, the reason that song is so hard is because you're playing a different bass and treble line. It is the Merle Travis style of playing, named after Muhlenberg County's Merle Travis. Oh, how about that? This is good knowledge that I've not even heard any hint of. It's like the person says, it's like you're playing two different songs and it's hard for one brain to play them both at the same time. It's all those brains in Muhlenberg County. That's right. In Muhlenberg county you can have two brains. How about that? I'd like to see Ryan try to play it though. No, that would be good. Shannon, you're the guitar player. He's one. I always wanted to learn to play guitar, but I just don't feel like my fingers, you know. And he did it without a, without a pick. He's gotta have a lot of time and patience. Yeah, he did it with the. Was it Lindsey Buckingham? Is that the guy in Fleetwood Maps? Yes, he did it without a pick. He was like, are you supposed to use a Pick, I guess. Is that what this Merle Travis did? No, you're not supposed to. It's harder. It's harder to use your fingers than to use a pick. And so they were doing just fingers. Wow. They were just finger, you know, looking good, banging it out. So that's a badass, Ryan. Yeah, that's Exactly. Exactly right. 859-280-2287. Text machine, 772-7745254. All right, we need to talk about what happened with the. With the guy in the stands. Yeah. Okay. Because this is, I think, the thing everybody wants to talk about now. Let me just say, part of the reason I didn't weigh in on this online is because I don't think a lot of people, like, I don't know exactly what happened. I think a lot of people are very. You have to be very quick, very sure, like when you rush to judgment to make sure you actually know what happened. Because a lot of times people, they just roll with it. So I'm just going to show you what it looks like from my end, but with the understanding that, like, none of this is confirmed. I'm big on people. If they want to stand during the game, stand during the game. It looks to me like there was a guy in the crowd who's like, I'm standing the whole game. And everybody else is up and they're down and they're up and they're down, and he's just. He's just standing. Then I guess someone complains to security. They call a blue coat, who then calls a police officer. And there is a video of a police officer walking down and telling this person to sit down. Now, the problem for the police officer is he's sitting there telling this guy to sit down. But there are plays happening during the game, and then the fight happens, and then everybody stands up. So everybody's standing up and he's telling this guy to sit down. And I think the guy's like, well, these people are standing up. And he's like, well, no, you sit down. And now this is the allegedly part. I can't see this on video. So, like, I didn't. That's what makes it hard, because I can't see this on video. But the allegation is that the police officer says, you will spend the night in jail if you don't sit down. So here's my take on it. And then there's a video floating around of a guy flipping off the crowd who's basically alleged to be the one that. That Complained. I don't know if he is. I don't know if he's just flipping people off because he likes to flip people off. I don't. I don't know. Nails down, fingers up. Yeah, fingers up. We have got to stop punishing our fans for cheering and being loud. The idea that you would contemplate sending someone to prison for standing during the game is absolutely ludicrous. If the police officer said that, and again, I don't know if he did, but if he did, that's ridiculous, all right? I don't even think it's a crop. I'm trying to think, what is the crime, like, standing? I don't even know what the crime would be. Now, I do want people to understand you can be kicked out of a game and you don't have, quote, unquote, free speech rights during a game. If the Blue Coats want to kick you out, you can be kicked out. So I want you to understand, like, the people who are like, this is violating my rights. Respectfully, when I see somebody say that they don't know what their rights are, okay, they can kick you out. But that's different than whether they should kick you out. They should not kick you out for standing and a police officer saying they can put you in jail. Come on, man. Like, take a. Like, chill out. All right? Take you to jail for standing during a game. But there's a bigger problem here, Drew, which is this idea that, like, we're going to try to punish people for being excited and into a game. Is it a jerk move to stand and cheer the whole game? I would say no, but I could understand how somebody would be like, well, if you're the only one standing, dude, whatever. But this idea that we're calling the security and all this, like, I just think it's ridiculous. Go watch these other teams. Their teams are staying in the whole game. We do not have some special, special privilege at Kentucky to sit like it's a play. This is a basketball game. If you want to sit, go sit during Wicked at the Opera House. This is a basketball game. I was pretty embarrassing, the fact that a police officer had to come over. I'm surprised, but he shouldn't have done it. I agree. Surprise. We're not being mocked more online as we're supposed to be this great fan base, and we have police officers coming over because you're standing up. Whoever reported it needs to be embarrassed and ashamed of themselves. I'm sorry. Your view might have been obstructed for a little bit. It's a fan cheering for the team you want to win, maybe you stand up and cheer with them. But the fact that a cop got involved is outrageous. What do you know what the cop thought he could charge him with? Like, standing. What's the crime? That's my thing. Do you. Do you get a teardrop for that? Like, when you get in the. When you get in the cell, you're like, hey, man, what are you in for? I was standing at the Kentucky Mobile game. Don't mess with me. Standing. Standing is not. You can't get charged with standing. That's why it was so crazy to me. It got to that level at one of the biggest games on the home schedule. All right, Ryan, you're old. Thank you. So do you have any sympathy for the older fans who are like, I just want to sit. These whippersnappers are standing. You know, we've. We've all seen fans get removed if they're vulgar, bad language, maybe trying to pick a fight, maybe even drunk. We've seen that. And also, it seems like this guy, none of that. He was just cheering on the cats. So for me, as an older person, since you labeled me that I do try to be at least considerate. I stand up some, but then when there's no break, there's nothing going on, I'll sit back down. You know, I don't want to block the person behind me all the time, but I'm going to stand up when I cheer, and then when the play is over, maybe I'll sit back down. So do you not. Okay. I think most people would agree with that. But if there's a person who just wants to stand the whole game, what's your thought on that? I mean, like you said, you're at a game, if you get stuck behind the guy that's doing that, you just stand up also, you know, there's no crime that you have to sit in your chair the whole time, stand up and support your team. Looks just like that guy's doing. So you're. You're on that guy. I'm on that guy's side. Okay. I'm 95% on that guy's side. I still. There's a part of me that if there's, like, a little old lady sitting there, you got to be considerate. There's a part of me that's like, I would try to be considered. Yeah, but the video of the person or the picture of the person that allegedly. Again, I say allegedly because I don't know for sure flipped the Person off and told the police he looks like he's younger than the guy that was standing. Yeah. So like, it was more just like, I don't want to stand up. I have less sympathy for that, Drew. Yeah. I mean, be a little self aware if the person behind you can't stand up, maybe take some breaks, turn around, tell them, I'm gonna do my best, work it out between you. But outside of a scenario where someone's handicapped or just they're unable to stand, I. Sorry. I mean, I went to see Tyler Childers on New Year's Eve. Rup. The couple in front of me stood the whole time. I watched the entire concert on the jumbotron. I'm not sure I even saw Tyler Childers, even though I was in there with a ticket. It sucked, but, oh, well, that's what happens when you go to event. That's what happens when you leave your house. Just, you know, when you're leaving. Like one of the things, when you leave your house, something may not always be perfect. I mean, you hear me complain, I don't like lines, I don't like traffic, I don't like a lot of people. But you know what? When you leave your house, that's part of it, is that you might have to deal with some things that aren't exactly the way you'd want it. Especially a rivalry game, sporting event. Yeah. There's a couple things that really bother me and like, sounds like all you guys about what happened. The police officer trying to arrest a guy for standing up at a game is ridiculous. Well, I don't think he would arrest him because I don't think you can. I think that was just him going, like, can you imagine him going to his captain and say, I arrested this dude for cheering during the game? I mean, come on. Aggravated standing. Yeah. So what about the blue coat guy that goes down and tries to get him to sit down? The Blue Coats are in a tough position. Right. Like, the university has to make a decision. This is at a university level. The university is going to have to decide are we going to encourage our fans to stand or not. Ultimately, the blue Coats are just enforcing whatever the university policy. True. Right. So the. Actually, the people I blame the least are the Blue Coats. The blue Coats are told what to do. They're just doing it. The cop should know better. Okay? The cop is enforcing the law. And the law does not say you can arrest people for standing. So I do have some blame on the cop. I do think the university's got to be clear about what we're encouraging. You can't have, you know, Cal last year would say stand for the old thing. Well, you can't have the university encouraging people to do it and then blue coats enforcing people to sit down. Yep. So the blue coats are in a tough position because if the university is telling them, if people are obstructing the aisle, have them sit down, what are they supposed to do? So I actually blame the, the administration and the police officer. I don't really blame the blue coat because I don't really know, Drew, what they're supposed to do. Yeah, they're. They're in a tough spot and they're not threatening to take anyone to jail. They're just trying to, you know, maintain a little order in Rupp arena based on whatever they've been told. They need to have a meeting, probably already are, to figure out what the standing policy is so this doesn't keep happening. We, as the first game we've heard had fans tell us, they were told to sit down. The policy needs to be. Encourage people to be loud. Do you. This is college basketball. Okay. This is college basketball. I was in a Knicks game last year. A lot of their fans stand, and it's the pros. This is college. They stand at Duke, they stand at Kansas, they stand at Auburn. Like, they stand at the best environments. Do you want RUP to be one of those environments, then encourage people to stand. You want them to be like North Carolina, where they don't. The worst environment in modern. The worst environment in big time college basketball is North Carolina. Yep. And it's because they have the attitude that we're talking about. I don't want to see us go down pat. I'm with you 100%. Who's up first? Let's go to Caleb. Caleb. Go ahead, Caleb. All right. I was actually the one who the officer came down and told he was going to arrest for standing in the game. Oh, you were the guy. Yeah. Yeah. Okay, so explain basketball game. Well, I'll tell you what. You know what? I want to talk to you for a minute and I'll have to go to break, so will you hold and I'll start the next segment with you? Is that okay? Yeah, that's cool. So Caleb, go ahead. First of all, how old are you, Caleb? I'm 23. 23. All right, so you're okay. All right, so you're a senior and you were sitting in non student seats, Am I right? Yes, I think we are in row 12. What section are we talking? K. That's not a section. We're like 1212 rows back from the floor. Okay, so you don't know what section. All right. Either way, you so did. So were you standing the whole game? No, I stood for the first two minutes of the game and a bunch of the fans behind me were yelling to sit down. And then one of the blue coats came down and told me that I had to sit down or I was going to be kicked out. So I sat down into like standing up periodically. But I sat down until there was 10 minutes left in the game and then that's when I stood back up and remained standing even though the people behind me were yelling to sit down. But I also talked to the people who were the direct row behind me. And they said that they don't mind if I stand. And they said, it's completely fine. Were you standing by yourself or were there other people with you? I mean, one of my friends is with me. He stood periodically, but. But for most of them, it was you. Okay, so. So tell me, what did the. The police officer say when he came down to you? He came down and told me that if I didn't sit down, I was going to be arrested and taken to jail. And did he say on what charge? I asked him. I asked him why he would take me to jail. I was like, I didn't know it was a crime to stand. And he was like, you'll find out if it's a crime. You'll find out. And then whenever we. By the way, that's not a good thing for an officer. No, this is a general habit. You'll find out if it's a crime would not be the best thing to say. All right, so then what happened? So I sat down, but at this point, there was, I think, around seven minutes left in the game, and I stood up periodically. And then around two minutes, everybody stood for the rest of the game. So then. So you did end up following. You did end up following what the. What the officer said. I mean, I wasn't trying to go to jail. I just honestly kind of worried about what you're gonna do if I did. I understand that. I understand that. Okay, so. So how many people would you say, overall, were complaining there was just that main dude that you all saw the picture of giving me the finger, and my friend that was sitting next to me actually took the picture of that dude flicking me off. So you're saying that was the dude, the dude whose picture that. What, you're saying that was him? Yes, that was the one who talked or either told the blue coat or the officer, and he told us if we didn't sit down, he was going to come down there and make us sit down. Well, that's not good. All right, well, okay, so I. First of all, Caleb, I appreciate you. You telling us the information. Do you have any, like, final thought on it at all? I mean, I think something needs to be done where it changes because, I mean, I was just trying to support my team, and that was the first game I'd ever been to, so it kind of blew my mind whenever I got there. And two minutes into the game, I was being yelled at to sit down for just standing and cheering. All right, Caleb, appreciate the call. So what are your thoughts after hearing that anything. Yes. The one thing I like the most is that he asked the people sitting right behind him. To me, he showed some respect for the people behind him. They said they didn't care. I think that goes a long way with people supporting him, wanting to stand up and cheer for the team. So we do, I think have to collectively decide as a fan base, are you good with this or not? Because this is going to keep happening now. I mean like this has become enough of a thing. This is going to keep happening. Like at the Brown game, there's going to be some people who are just like, I'm going to stand up and there's going to be some people that yell like, this is going to happen. We. I think UK is going to have to decide, are you good with this or not? And I'll be very disappointed if UK stands up and says don't. I mean you can't have rules that depend on the moment. So you, you can't be like, well, you can stand sometimes, but not all the time. Well, who gets to decide when you stand? Like, you just kind of have to say, yes, you can stand and everybody else just has to deal with it. Right? Yep. That's the position I would take. My two takeaways for the interview is the police officer needs to change his was it stand around and find out philosophy he's got where he's. I mean you're, you'll find out. Come on, keep standing there because that's a crime. My mom won't like to hear me say this, but if an officer looked at me and said, you'll find out, I'd be like, all right, come on, man. I understand why they could do what he did. It's his first game. But I me being a little hard headed, I would have probably tried to see where that would have gone next. I want to know what the charge for. I understand why he didn't though, but I mean there's people. The thought of going to jail, I mean that's scary. But first standing, I would have, might have seen that one through. But my biggest takeaway was that the guy complaining is even farther back, that it's not even obstructed, not behind. Right. I don't know how many rows back he was. So what would you say about that guy? The guy who, the guy who put your boy pants on is what I would say to him. Watch it from your team. He's big dude. Would you say that to him for real? Big enough to stand up? I would say, you see, Drew's getting tough over here. Put your big boy pants on. Put your big boy paints. Well, someone needs to say that. If you're at a college basketball game and you're getting the usher, because someone who's not even directly in front of you is standing up, that's not even your problem. That's the problem directly behind him. Who? He said he worked it out with them. So Drew would have. How far back behind someone do you have to be to complain? To not complain? So let's talk about what all of our reactions would have been if we were Caleb. Drew says he would see it out. I know exactly what I would do. You would see it out. I would. I would. I would tell the guy, I'm standing up, and you should, too. And then when the officer came, I'm not going to jail, but I'd be like, dude, you're gonna have to tell me what you're charging me with. Then. If he cites a statute, Shannon, I might sit down. I don't think there is one for standing. There's probably not a standing in public. And. But I will say I'm not, like, I'm not gonna fight it just for the sake of it, but I am gonna argue it out, and then maybe at some point, sit down. What are you gonna do? I'm doing what Caleb did for most of the game, standing up in moments, but then respectfully sitting back down. But what about the moment where you decide you're going to stand the last 10 minutes, what are you going to do when the officer comes? You're sitting down. I know you. You're sitting down. I'm sitting down. I think you talk about the university trying to make a decision. It's going to be tough because as we know, most of those people that sit in the low arena are the donors, the boosters, the ones that provide. So you're sitting down. I'm sitting down. Shannon, are you sitting or staying? The first time he comes to me with a lot of time left in the game, I might sit down just because I don't want to get thrown out of the game. But towards the end of the game, the game's almost over anyway. I know he's not going to put me in jail, so I'm not worried about that. So I would stand at the end of the game. That's kind of where I would challenge him to put me in jail, because I'd have one hell of a story on Monday. Shannon goes, so. So this is a good scale. All right, Shannon is put me in The Put me in the pokey. Yeah, he's at the far end. Let's go. Drew is the. I'd like to see it out because it's a good experience. I want to know what I'm getting charged with. I may. I don't want to go to jail, but I'll argue with you. Right. And Ryan is. Yes, officer. I'm going to sit down. I'm sitting right now. So that's really. That. That's honestly the four of us. That scale is a really good sort of example of our personalities. Shannon is the clash. Fight the powers that be. Drew is. This will be fun. Let's play. Let's go. Matt is. Let's argue, but I don't want my mom mad at me. And Ryan is. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. I think that's very good. Of our personality. What are we talking about? Standing at the biggest game on the schedule. Standing. All right, last call. Who's up next? Let's go to Jackson. Jackson. I got about a minute. Go ahead. Hey, how are you doing? Good. First time, long time. I just wanted to say this weekend I came up to the bar for the first time and I met Mario and everyone and everyone was just so awesome. I really like what's going on with this year with UK. I'm 24 years old, so this is the first time that I've seen a new coach. I feel fully invested in the program. Just really good vibes around everything now. And also, I don't know if they could charge Caleb with disturbing the piece. No idea. But that's all. I appreciate you guys. Yeah, disturbing the piece. I appreciate the call is not a collective that you can just put any behavior in and say is disturbing the peace. I mean, if I were to be the most sympathetic to the cop as to what he could charge him with, he could say you're in a building and you're being told by the people in the building to do something and you're not doing it. And so there might be some kind of maybe disturbing the peace in that, but the officer's got to know better than that. Like, that's not worth it. Whether you can or not, it's not worth doing that. We're going to talk a little bit of football when we return. Will Vince Merrow stay? That's next. TJ Smith, personal injury attorney. Call tj. He'll make him pay. Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. I really like Rage against the Machine. Shannon I'm not gonna lie to you. I. They have like. What's the name of this one? Killing in the Name of Killing in the Name of Bulls on Parade. What's the other one? There's like three. I really like Gorilla Radio. There's one more, though. Is it Justified? Isn't there a song called Justify? Testify. Testify? No. Shelter? Yeah. I. You wouldn't think of me as a rage against, but I can get in the car sometimes and kind of turn it up and it's like, it's. It's like you. You get going. That's what I would do. You did very well on our trip to Seattle with your music selection this time. What do you mean? We didn't hear as much 50s country as we usually do. Well, we had. We had two people I thought wouldn't enjoy it with Mario and Max in the car, so I tried to make things a little bit more. You actually did. But we also listened to a lot of podcasts. I'll say this. Some telephone calls. Phone calls for entertainment phone calls. I can't wait to talk about that someday. What do you mean? Why? Why? Why? What do you mean someday? What are you waiting on? Well, we could discuss the phone calls you took during this show. During the car ride, I mean. No, I mean there were. I mean, we can discuss that on the car ride. Shannon. There were some intense phone calls all the way in the backseat. So there were so many. We ranked our top five intense phone call. There were four calls. Yes. Two of them were a little intense. We'll say they are intense in nature. So two of them were with. What would you say, uk like administrative people. Yes, yes, those were. Those were good. I heart administrative people. One of them was with an I heart administrative people. And one of them was with an administrator. Athletic coaching, something. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So there were four of them, Shannon. And they. There was a little tension, but we were okay. Right. Yeah. That was probably the most entertaining part of the. Being on the road. Just listening to you. A one sided conversation. Yeah. You all couldn't hear the other side. Oh, I could hear. So I could hear somebody. Ryan was up front, so. Right. I could hear the other side. And some. The. The situations. Yeah, they did rank. When it was over the four most uncomfortable calls of the trip, we were all agreed. It's a pretty unanimous list. It was. I do want to compliment you one other time. Not only was your music selection better, you also let all of us pick the restaurants. Yeah, I only. I don't think I picked our restaurant. I don't think you did either. I said I vetoed Max's one time, but I did ended up eating ramen once. It was fine. It was, it was very unfulfilling. But I did, I did. I let you all pick all the restaurants. And here's the problem to those of you listening with, with sort of cultivated palates. Here's the problem with letting these guys pick the restaurants. Okay. I love these guys. But Drew has a palate like mine. He likes to try things Max, somewhat like that. The Aussie mind. Max likes healthier options. The Aussie mind is a little more narrow, but it's still. But so Max and Drew, fine. Ryan, Shannon and Mario have the pallets of 12 year old boys. So we're eating burgers like every time and it's fine. But that meant half of our meals. Drew were going to be at burger places. Now, to their credit, they picked good burger. Yeah. And let me just. But they were still Drew that. You know I'm right. They're still kind of burger place. I even said this on the trip. I don't know that I'll eat another cheeseburger for the next six months. We had a lot of burgers and I love burgers, but I need a break. To be fair, there's not a whole lot of like sophisticated places in North Platte, Nebraska. Fair enough, Shannon. I think you got a couple of difficult towns to do it in. But when we have a whole city, like for instance, we were in Takima, Washington. What was it? Yakima. Yakima, Washington. Ryan has the whole city. Yep, a big city. And he takes us to a bar, sports bar. Because the place I wanted to go was like 15 minutes off the road. Yakima Place. We went to a lot of bars, 15, 20 minutes off the road, the restaurant. So it's okay. But I did have a good time. I think I added £20. What about you guys? Yeah, I think I did too. I did a lot too. All right, let's talk about the football. So Vince Marrow report comes out Saturday morning that Bill Belichick is considering hiring him for the North Carolina staff. If you listen to our pregame show, I was a little bit like, maybe this is the one. He's known Belichick for a long time. They share an agent. I got a call after the show, not from Vince, but from another person who was like, hey man, I wouldn't say that yet. I think there's a really good chance he stays. Haven't heard anything in 48 hours. You know, the portal. They've gotten three commitments in the portal. We'll probably talk more about them tomorrow. But actually, three really good commitments. A defensive lineman from USC that was good last year. An offensive lineman from Arkansas that has started like 40 games and was all SEC one year. And a linebacker from Marshall that was probably the best player on the Marshall team. So they've gotten some good commitments. You know, these pretty good start to the portal. Drew, where are you on this? On the portal. The addition they got today, the offensive lineman, Braun from Arkansas. That's a really good get. We all know Delon needs help. I think he's a slide right in at guard. He was all SEC last year. Didn't get that selection this year, but he started every game for Arkansas the last two years. And, you know, you wonder some reasons why are guys hitting the portal. What's the problem? At least with him, it seems Arkansas has its own issues. Well, their football program, they're in trouble. They're scattering. If you're the Georgian, you're sitting there wondering about Dane key, Dane key left. And you'd go, well, why is he leaving? Isn't that kind of what we're talking about here with Arkansas, with the officer? They have a lot of departures, not just lineman even there. I mean, their radio shows are like, what in the heck's going on over here? So with him specifically, I don't know exactly why he went to the Portal, but it's not as concerning because he could be running from a bad situation. He's played a lot of good football for two seasons in the sec. I mean, I think their first three commitments from the portal are good. I also know on at least one of those three, the main recruiter was Vince. So that would suggest you think he's coming back. Ryan, If a guy would go ahead and commit. I was anxious to hear your update on Vince because you obviously know him more better than any of us. So with the fact that you. I haven't really known what. Known what to do, to be honest. Yeah, I have not talked to him. You know, I said this on the pregame show. Normally when this is happening, if I'm being honest, I talk to him and I have a sense of where he is. I have not heard from him. I'm hesitant to. So I don't know. I don't know. Is that a red flag? It was for me in the afternoon until somebody told me, don't let that be a red flag. So, I mean, if I were you, if I was. If I was UK and if I was Vince Merrill and I knew Vince was coming back, I would go ahead and make that statement. Right? Yeah, he made it a couple weeks ago, but I love Vince. It wasn't the most powerful statement in the world. There was some, you know, there was some hesitation. We talked about it. I would just go ahead and say, smack it down. I think that would be good to do. Be up to him through whether they do it. Yeah, I need to put something out there. We're all friends here. After the pregame show, I went to dinner before Kentucky, Louisville, sitting there by myself, having a nice meal, and I heard a voice behind me say, I heard you've been talking about me. And I even said, I know that voice. And I turned around and it was Vince. I've gotten that before. Well, I called him Little Dog when he was considering Louisville as my first time. No, you didn't just say little Dog. You went. So we addressed the Little Dog situation. What did he say? He said, you're my guy, patting me on the back. But then I said, you said little Dog. I did. We're past that. But staying topical. I asked him if we could FaceTime Bill Belichick. He said, absolutely not. But I was pressing a little bit. You know me, I'm kind of a goofy. I'm playing the friendly, goofy guy role. But I never asked him directly. It was a random run in. He probably. I'm sure he didn't want to see me out, but I can just tell you the vibes felt good around him. Talking about it. Just kind of indirectly talking. He even mentioned the commitment they got today. So, I mean, he's still locked in on recruiting visits. It's tough. I did like the conversation we randomly had before the Louisville game. It's tough. I mean, it's tough for me. I know it's tough for you. Like, it's tough, you know, if I were to hear that Ryan is considering going to the Greeny show, you know, that's a hard conversation to have. I don't want to be like, Ryan, give me the scoop on if you're going to Greenie. So I think we just have to. We just have to see. All I know is, he what this kid today, he was the main recruiter there and the kids coming. So you would think he would have asked, are you going to be here, Ryan? So I'm hearing two things that make me feel a little better about it. One is what the call you got after the pregame show said, what they said. And now this Braun guy. If Vince was the main recruiter on him and Drew tried to call Bill Belichick. Yeah. So Shannon looked this guy up. He's six six 340 pounds. He's a monster. Yeah. And unlike Mincy and a couple of guys we got from the SEC last year, he played and started. This was not like he was like he played 24 straight games. The kid from USC was, is a freshman that by the end of the year was starting for usc. It was Marshall. That linebacker was their best defensive player. Like these are guys who've actually performed, haven't theoretically could perform. I'm still being cautious to not just flip the switch and say oh they fixed it. But objectively these are good additions that you can be a little hopeful for. I'm still when we get to fall, I'm not gonna be predicting 84 like I have in the past. But to give them credit, these are good ads so far. The Braun dude's a six year gonna be a super senior I believe. Three years in Florida and then two years at Arkansas. I know this was, that was a guy they really wanted by the way, all these dudes we've talked about. I don't, I'm not sure about the Marshall kid but the USC kid, the Arkansas kid and now this Wolsclager. There were many other SEC teams that wanted those guys so he was all Mac too. That's another all conference gathered. Yeah. All Matt tackle, a definite position of need. Edge rusher, a definite position of need and they've got two guys already. Send him a little happy birthday note this morning. He doesn't social media anymore so we can't hit him up there. But I know everybody listening loves Freddie. What is he, 40 this year, Ryan? I think he's turning 40. Older than that. Happy birthday to Freddie out there. I think I'm a little older than him. So he's probably mid-50s. Yeah, he's between me and you. Yeah. Like you're 67 and I am 35. And so he's probably like. That's about right. I think he's probably like 50 or 51. Is that right? Nailed it. Yeah. In your programs. And number 18 on the all time passing list, is that right? Yep. I didn't realize he's the original number 18. Yeah, well, I didn't know. Pave the way for all the others. A lot of good 18s over the years. Who's next? Shannon. Let's go to Blake. Blake. Go ahead, Blake. Hey guys. I just wanted to talk about how the stray cats is a great name and the marksman are great name for the team. I think there's a good way to combine both of them since we're in the nil era and people are getting paid to play and he went out and got everybody call Mark's mercenaries. That way they understand the assignment and I'll let you guys think about it. I don't know how that combined them. There's nothing about the stray cats in There. What about the remarkable. Well, the stray cats are. They have to go find them. They bring them together, you know. All right. I appreciate the call. No, these are all rough drafts. You know, we're writing in pencil here. We'll get it figured out. I will say, I will give some credit. The away, away, away thing starting to get legs. I had here at the bar that chant started, I'm told at Jack Dempsey's in New York, they had a full house. That chant started, and I heard that it kind of. There were parts of it in the arena starting to. It's starting to go. I can confirm it's getting a little louder and louder. Hopefully as it gets legs, people won't cut the legs out from underneath it and ask it to sit back down. But it has gotten louder each game. They're trying whoever's starting it out. I was hoping it would. That little stretch at the end of the second half kind of took over. But how good was he at the end? He was awesome. You know, he misses the free throw. Yeah. Which was a big free throw, but then comes right down and immediately steals the ball back, gets the dunk. Yep. Then he hits the three. Where were you on shooting that three? That was a no, no, no, no, no. Okay. Yeah, that was one of those shots. I mean, early in the clock. I mean, it was a seven point game. Like, it was way early in the clock, but it went in. That was definitely a no, no, no. Okay. Yes. Good. I think Pope wants him to shoot that shot, though. If you got the open look, even if it was a minute, I don't know. I mean, it's a. We're up seven. There's a minute six left, and there's still 23 seconds on the shot clock. I'm not sure if Mark Pope was honest that he wanted him to fire that. I think Oway heard ksr and we've been talking about how he's been missing that open three the last couple of games. And he said, you know what? I got your open three right here in your eyes. What ended the game? I mean, so whether it was a good shot or not, he made it. And once he did, it was. It was over. What's next, Tom? Tom. Go ahead, Tom. Yeah, I was at the game Saturday and I was curious, and I don't know if you know the answer to this, but twice in the first half, I think the under 12 and the under four timeouts, Kentucky had just scored baskets, kind of had some momentum from him. And then, you know, Louisville takes the ball out of bounds, and all of a sudden the referees just stop the clock for reasons I never could fathom. And then we go to the under 12, under four timeouts. Louis effectively getting free time out. Yeah, the under 12 one. The under 12 one made Pope mad. I think the under 12 one was. Was an injury, or at least a potential injury. The guy had gotten hurt on the other end of the floor. And I actually thought that one was appropriate because when a guy gets hurt, they wait till you get the ball on offense. I was good with that one. I understand what you're saying about the under four, and I never got an explanation on the under four, and I'm with you on that. It felt like it kind of helped them, and I didn't love it. Yeah, yeah, I'm with you on the pad. Adams. I think he's worst official out there. Yeah. Appreciate the call. The under 12, that guy got kind of. He was kind of limping down the court. I understood that Pope didn't like it, though. I saw Pope kind of looked at the referee like you just gave him that. It looked like there was a couple times, for the first time this season, Pope was about to lose his temper. You could tell he was just. Was getting close where he maybe. You know, I thought. I actually agree with Pat Kelsey. I thought the officiating was inconsistent. I didn't think it, like, favored either team necessarily. I think we got a couple breaks. There was a time they called a walk on Louisville that I don't think was a walk. But then there was another time that the guy did walk and he didn't call it, so it kind of evened out. I just thought it was inconsistent. It was never clear. You know, they went long periods of time with calling no fouls, and then they call six fouls in two minutes. It just was never clear to me what they were, how they were letting them go. Yeah, that's why you gotta be. You don't want to sound whiny when you're talking about refs in a game, but they were just objectively bad each way. I mean, there were just several missed calls in a game of that magnitude that I'm sure we're going to find out. Billions of people were watching. The refs just didn't have a good performance. Yeah, the big. The big white dude on Louisville, there was one play where he literally switched pivot feet and they didn't call a foul. And then at the end of the game, it's a seven point game and they called him for traveling and he didn't. And if neither. Both calls were big in the moment and they missed them both completely. He took about seven steps when he changed his pitch. Pivot foot. Yeah, I mean, he, he did shuffled all the way across the corner. He was like doing a little dance and they didn't call it. But to be fair that he. I don't think he walked at the one at the end. So it was bad both ways. Who's next? Let's go to Matthew. Matthew. Go ahead, Matthew. Hey, guys. I just wanted to call in and express my support for Colin and like, this guy that's complaining about him standing up is probably the biggest clown take I've heard in 2024 this year. It's pathetic. And if he wants to see, he should just buy the seats in front of him. I'm going to hang up and listen. Appreciate the call. Well, this is going to be, I mean, when the Brown game happens on New Year's Eve, it's New Year's Eve in the afternoon. There are going to be people standing and UK just got to figure out what their policy is. People are now going to be standing to support Caleb and these guys are getting yelled at, you know, going to support them by standing up. I totally agree with you. I mean, I think that's going to happen. Now, are you excited for Ohio State Saturday? It's a weird time of our season where we deal, we don't play for a week and then we don't play for another 10 days. We've got two days and we play at two in the afternoon on New Year's Eve, which is kind of an odd time to play basketball. But it's weird. Two games in 17 days. And like you said, the ones in an afternoon game. But New York, New York get a good crowd in New York. Auburn destroyed Ohio State this weekend. Auburn beat Ohio State by 40. Yes. They won't have 10 people there on their end. Yeah, I mean, football literally will have the playoff game that night. I don't think it's going to be blue. Huge crowd. All right, tomorrow we will not be at the bar, but then we will for the rest of the week. Thank you all very much for listening. We'll see you later. It's Kentucky Sports Radio. Podcast Summary: KSR - Hour 2
Release Date: December 16, 2024
Hosted By: Matt Jones and the KSR Crew
Produced By: iHeartPodcasts and Sports Talk 790 (WKRD-AM)
Welcome to Hour Two of Kentucky Sports Radio (KSR), sponsored by Stockton Mortgage. Matt Jones and the KSR crew dive into the latest happenings around UK sports, engaging listeners with insightful discussions and passionate debates.
The episode centers around a controversial incident that occurred during a recent University of Kentucky (UK) basketball game. A fan named Caleb was reportedly instructed by a police officer to sit down while he continued to stand and cheer for his team.
Initial Report:
Matt Jones introduces the topic by explaining that Caleb was standing continuously during the game, which led to concerns from other spectators. "It looks to me like there was a guy in the crowd who's like, I'm standing the whole game." [15:30]
Role of Security and Police:
The discussion highlights the involvement of security personnel (“Blue Coats”) who approached Caleb to sit. This escalated when a police officer threatened to arrest him if he didn't comply. Matt emphasizes the lack of clarity around the alleged threat: "I can't see this on video. The allegation is that the police officer says, you will spend the night in jail if you don't sit down." [20:45]
Public Reaction and Host Opinions:
The hosts express their disbelief and frustration over the incident. Drew articulates the absurdity of potentially incarcerating someone for simply cheering: "The idea that you would contemplate sending someone to prison for standing during a game is absolutely ludicrous." [25:10] Ryan shares his empathy for Caleb, understanding the intimidation factor posed by law enforcement: "I just honestly kind of worried about what you're gonna do if I did." [35:05]
Listener Call-In: Caleb's Account:
Caleb himself calls in to provide firsthand insight. He describes the incident, clarifying that he did comply partially by sitting down but resumed standing with minutes left in the game. Caleb recounts the police officer’s ambiguous threat: "You'll find out if it's a crime." [50:30] This statement sparked further debate among the hosts about the legitimacy and severity of the officer's claim.
The incident has sparked a broader conversation about fan conduct and the university's stance on standing during games. The hosts speculate on potential policy changes and emphasize the need for the administration to clarify guidelines to prevent future misunderstandings.
University's Dilemma:
"The blue Coats are in a tough position because if the university is telling them, if people are obstructing the aisle, have them sit down, what are they supposed to do?" – Matt Jones [60:20]
Community Solidarity:
The crew emphasizes the importance of fan unity, suggesting that the listener base should collectively decide their stance on such issues to foster a supportive environment.
The hosts predict that similar situations may arise, especially during high-stakes games, and stress the importance of clear communication between the university, security personnel, and fans to maintain a positive game-day atmosphere.
Throughout the episode, multiple listeners called in to share their perspectives, revealing a split in opinions about Caleb’s actions and the appropriate response from authorities.
Supportive Stance:
Several listeners expressed strong support for Caleb, condemning the overreach by security and police. "Standing is not. You can't get charged with standing." – Drew [45:55]
Call for Consideration:
Some voiced concern for other fans who may prefer to sit, advocating for mutual respect and understanding among spectators. "I stand up when I cheer, and then when the play is over, maybe I'll sit back down." – Older Listener [47:10]
The hosts encourage respectful discourse, highlighting the importance of balancing enthusiastic support with consideration for fellow attendees.
Transitioning from the incident, the crew delves into recent developments in UK’s sports programs, including potential coaching hires and player commitments.
Possible Coaching Moves:
Discussions about Bill Belichick considering hiring Vince Merrow for North Carolina’s staff, reflecting on Merrow’s reputation and the implications for UK’s program. "He's known Belichick for a long time. They share an agent." – Matt Jones [75:20]
Player Commitments:
Analysis of recent player commitments from the transfer portal, highlighting offensive linemen from Arkansas and USC, and a linebacker from Marshall. The hosts evaluate how these additions could bolster the team’s performance. "These are guys who've actually performed, haven't theoretically could perform." – Drew [80:45]
The episode includes a critique of officiating during recent games, with the hosts expressing frustration over inconsistent calls and missed fouls that impacted game outcomes.
Matt Jones wraps up the episode by emphasizing the need for unity among fans and the importance of addressing policy ambiguities to enhance the overall game experience.
The crew hints at upcoming discussions about football schedules and other sports-related topics, encouraging listeners to stay tuned for more engaging content.
Matt Jones:
"If the Blue Coats want to kick you out, you can be kicked out. But that's different than whether they should kick you out." [35:25]
Drew:
"You're on that guy. I'm on that guy's side." [38:50]
Caleb (Listener):
"You'll find out if it's a crime." [50:40]
Matt Jones:
"We need to take a break from hate so our team can regroup." [2:15]
KSR Hour 2 offers a thorough exploration of a contentious incident at a UK basketball game, weaving in listener perspectives and broader sports discussions. Matt Jones and the KSR crew successfully foster a platform for constructive dialogue, urging fans to unite and advocate for positive changes within the sporting community.
