Welcome, everyone, to Kentucky sports radio our drive to Seattle. We are live in Iowa City, Iowa, at the pizza ranch on Highway 1 with a wonderful set of Kentucky fans here in the party room at the pizza ranch on Highway 1. Ready to start our drive to Seattle. You can give us a shout in the Clark's puppet shop phone line, 859-280-2287. Avision Auto Glass text machine is 772-774-5254. This dish is sponsored by the TJ Smith Law Office. You call TJ. I'll make them pay. Look, there are a million things going on right now. We played basketball on Friday. We lost to Louisville on Saturday. There are rumors there are all kinds of stuff going on. We're going to go over as much of it as we can, but we're also on a road trip where we're having fun and we'll try to balance it all as much as we can. Rick, we're not going to answer the phone for a little while, okay? It makes it easy for you. Is that all right? Sounds good to me. Yeah, it sounds like you're already excited, Rick. That's what I like to hear. We are here in Iowa City. Ryan Lemon, already four people here with us right now. You got Matt. You got Austin. You got. Give me your name again.
Drew Franklin
Anita.
Matt Jones
Anita. And you got Devin. All who've made the trip from the Iowa City area.
Ryan Lemond
And really there's no better place to be in Iowa City than the party room at a Pizza Ranch.
Matt Jones
Party room. Party room is very party tastic. It is. There is a lot of snow on the ground. So big shout out to the four of these people that came. You know, when I woke up this morning, I thought, drew, I think we'll have people. But it's snowing a lot. But it's Iowa. These people are tough.
Shannon The Dude
I'm impressed with the number four here. I figured, you know, Devin over there, he usually makes our Iowa shows. I was counting on him. But it's great to see three others. And we'll call this a good crowd, given the circumstances outside.
Matt Jones
Shannon, you love going on these trips every year. I see the excitement on your face. Are you glad to be in Iowa City?
Drew Franklin
I am. I mean, of all the places in the world I could be right now, Iowa City is the one place I want to be right now with all the snow in a Pizza Ranch.
Matt Jones
Well, thank you to the Pizza Ranch for opening up early for us so that we could be here. That was very nice of them. Max, your second KSR road trip. You were part of the drive yesterday from Kentucky to Iowa City. How are you enjoying it?
Max Duffy
I'm enjoying it a lot. It's never too early to party, so I'm happy we're in the party room. You know, there's universal, there's, you know, Disney World, all that. But this is where the kids want to come. Pizza Ranch, they got the arcade. I'm just worried about one thing.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Max Duffy
If you look up there, it says maximum occupancy, 38 persons. I've counted in here, 72 seats. I'm not sure that math works out. And I don't know if they're, you know, I don't want to get them in trouble, but that's 34 over the limit.
Shannon The Dude
There's still, still social distancing.
Matt Jones
Yeah, this is, this is from the distancing. Well, all right, so here's what we're going to do. I want to talk about what's happened because we had a lot happened yesterday, but we also need to talk about the News. So from 10 to 10:30, we're going to talk about the game, the football situation. Then at 10:30, we're going to switch to a little bit of our trip. I think we're going to have a guest at 11:00. I'll, I'm trying to get that worked out, but I'll Let you know and then we'll do more. Let's, let's, let's start with this. I don't even want to talk about the UK UofL game. Who cares? We lost. You know, if you want to, if you want to hear more of it, you can listen to the post game show on podcast. We lost UofL. It stunk. We'll not worry about that. I think the story to talk about is what happened after the game, which is Mark Stoop saying, not just saying he was going to return, being very definitive about it. Oh, look, we have number five.
Ryan Lemond
All right.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, getting closer to 38 max.
Matt Jones
Yes. But Stoop says he's going to stay. And then yesterday a lot of stuff, stuff starts happening. We lose two commitments. Josh Katis brother. Decommits goes to Clemson. Our four star running back, Marquise Davis. The commitment that was a big commit for Kentucky. Decommits is going to Missouri. Our recruiting class ranking went from 23 to 28. Then yesterday, some reports that Vince Merrow was considering going to Louisville. If you checked your social media this morning, I was able to confirm this morning that yes, that was true, that Louisville pursued him. This is the second time they've done it and he has ended up deciding to not go to Louisville. Lot to digest. Let's start with number one, Mark Stoops is returning. I'm going to go through all four of you thoughts. We'll start with you, Ryan. I gave my thoughts on the post.
Ryan Lemond
Game show and he was very definitive. Like, you know, hey, I'm going to be back at work tomorrow. Be in my office tomorrow. We're going to work and build this up. I needed to hear that because there was some uncertainty, I think about his future, what he was going to do. I want to hear that he wants, he not only is going to be here, he wants to be here.
Shannon The Dude
I'm pretty worried of how it's going to look because his comments, didn't he say something like I know a lot of people want me out?
Matt Jones
He said there's a lot of people who are rooting for wishful thinking or something and like, sorry, it's not happening or something like that.
Shannon The Dude
I'm worried it's like a spiteful return. You know, we've talked a lot about how much he has ahead and it got a lot harder yesterday losing two key pieces of his freshman recruiting class. I'm just worried how it's going to look if he's truly committed. I mean, it's a huge task in front of him. I'M doubtful it can be pulled off at all. I'll root for him, but I'm just worried he's just coming back to just say you don't want me here. I'm going to be here just because you don't want me to. And it's kind of like the spite thing we're getting Shannon.
Drew Franklin
I'm happy if he's coming back. Eight straight bowl games can't be ignored. I think that's really good for Kentucky.
Matt Jones
That was broken though.
Drew Franklin
It was. But I mean, does the guy not get one bad year? I know it was really disappointing. He's had a lot of talent on this team, so really underachieved considering the amount of talent. But I mean, if there's a guy that I want coaching the team next year, for me it's still Mark Stoops. I still believe the three of you.
Matt Jones
Kind of all over the spectrum. I mean, you're kind of happy he's coming back.
Drew Franklin
I am, yeah.
Matt Jones
Ryan's kind of like. But at least he's excited. And then Drew, I don't just.
Shannon The Dude
I don't think it's gonna work. This is a big rebuild. This is a multi year rebuild and he's. I mean he's already coached 12 years. He's not gonna coach here forever. So is he committed for a two, three year rebuild?
Drew Franklin
With the Portal being what it is though, I mean it's easier now to take a team from nothing to a top 25 team. So I'm optimistic he can do it.
Matt Jones
That's. I think you're right that it is easier. It's also for. Easier for it to all fall apart. You know what I mean? Like it can, I think it can go. I mean, look at yesterday. There was a moment where we felt like the whole thing was going to fall apart. I mean, I think events had decided to go to Louisville. Maybe it does fall apart.
Drew Franklin
And if he ends up staying here, that's a big movement going towards next year and keeping this together.
Matt Jones
Max.
Max Duffy
Yeah, I mean he was never, you know, just going to walk away from this 44 million. So I mean we all thought he'd definitely come back. Unless they came up with some sort of offer, I guess to try and bridge that gap. But I'm excited for him to be back. I'd have loved to be in that coaches meeting yesterday. I mean, it's got to be a very harsh review of all positions, including himself obviously. But all coaches, all players, all staff members and I think we'll see some change over this week. I mean at least in philosophy, but maybe in personnel. I mean he already talked about. We're going to have to have some conversation with some players and say, hey, you got to hit the road. So I think it's going to be interesting to see what comes out this week, what coaches have moved on, who leaves, who stays. That review would have been pretty harsh.
Matt Jones
I consider this almost like a two part show. I think if you want. I had a long review of the season and where I think the program stands. I kind of did all that on the post game show. So I would suggest to you listen to that. I don't want to just repeat myself and spend this whole trip going into it. I'm probably somewhere in between Ryan and Drew in the sense of like, look man, I don't think he deserves like I don't mind him having another shot but you got to show me, Mark, you're. You're in like, you got to show me not only your end but like are you going to. Are you going to bring some discipline to the program? The program was a disaster in the last six to eight weeks of the season. And that's why I thought I picked Louisville for the first time ever. I thought Louisville was going to win. The result did not surprise me at all. I thought that's. I thought that was what was going to happen. They. I think in my opinion the Vandy loss broke the team. I think they. I was saying this to somebody yesterday. I think they got shocked by the South. I think they thought they were going to be really good. They got shocked by the South Carolina game and they were like, oh. And then everybody pressed and then you got the good performance gets Georgia and the win against Ole Miss. And then I think some arrogance creeped in. Yeah, the South Carolina thing was a fluke. It's no big deal. We had a bye week after Ole Miss, if you remember. I think that's. That those two weeks, I think things kind of broke down. I think arrogance kind of creeped in. I think a lot of stuff. Some stuff happened with players not getting in trouble, but there were just some bad apples that I think spoiled the. It's not bad apples spoil the broth. What is it?
Drew Franklin
It could be broth if you want, you know, an apple.
Max Duffy
They still will spoil the broth. Yeah, for sure. Bad apples will spoil the Pizza Ranch.
Ryan Lemond
One bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch of girls. That was Jackson 5.
Matt Jones
One bad apple don't spoil the bunch of girls.
Drew Franklin
That makes zero sense.
Matt Jones
That's not even English Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
Jackson. Michael Jackson.
Matt Jones
He said that one bad apple doesn't.
Ryan Lemond
Spoil one bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch of girls.
Matt Jones
That's a song. Okay, I. I don't play that one.
Drew Franklin
Next, Rick. Yeah.
Matt Jones
All right. But my point is, there were some players, and I think the Vandy loss in some ways not only broke the season, but broke the morale of the program twice. I think it hurt the fans, but I think it also hurt that. And then I think it just started slipping down. I think everything kind of was a rolling train down. I think at the bye week, there was a lot of suggestion around the program. Maybe a change needs to be made. Which then made Mark defiant. I think got him like, I'm coming back. I think he's been saying that for two or three weeks. If you talked to people four or five weeks ago, they would have told you they thought he was going to leave or it was going to end. Then, I don't know. He decided to be defiant. I'm kind of. With Drew, defiance is really not always the way to make things work. But he's a dude. That whole Youngstown thing, that maybe that's what does it. I am told that the, like, meetings yesterday started early in the morning and went, like, after I went to bed. We'll just have to see. I mean, he's coming back. So I'm like, with Drew, I'm going to support him. I don't like how this year went down. And it culminates in that video of Gerald Mincy going to the concession stand during the game. I mean, it's funny in some ways. I laughed about it on espn, but if you want a symbol of what was wrong with the year, we had a player in his uniform walk to the concession stand during the Louisville game. Now, granted, he was wearing sweatpants, but still, like, that, to me, was a symbol of the thing. They brought in a lot of guys. It hurt the culture. Mark was not engaged enough to keep it going. A couple of the coaches tried, but they didn't have his definitive head coach power. And it slipped away, and then it got out of control. They've got to turn that around. Ryan, I know you. You're probably closer to the players than anyone amongst us. You saw it coming. You've been talking about it for weeks. Do you think it can turn around?
Ryan Lemond
I think it can turn around. Everything you said, though, I agree with. It was a disappointing end to a disappointing season. And I think Mark did lose the locker room somewhere in the middle of the season because there were some of the star players were not doing what was expected of him, you know, and I think he did. He kind of lost the locker room. And if Vince had decided to leave. We talked about this in the car last night. That would have been like, it's a sinking ship.
Matt Jones
If Vince left, especially for Louisville, it's over. Yeah, it's over. I mean, it's over. You'd have lost a third of the players, at least. I think the fan base would have been done. So, I mean. And, you know, I know that there's people who like to joke around, oh, the Vince job rumors happen all the time. For me, I'll speak as much as I can speak. There have been three times that I kind of thought he really considered it. Once was the Michigan state time. I think that was the closest one. Right when the. Or was it Michigan? Michigan, the first one. That was the closest one we've talked about. That was a wild day. That's the closest one now, I think the Michigan State. When he did seriously consider, and I don't know that. I don't know how, but Louisville made, I think, a serious run at him here. And I don't know that it was decided he was going to stay until this morning. That's huge. If we had woken up this morning and he had taken the Louisville job, I didn't speak last night because we all got to this hotel and we sit there and looked at each other, and we're like, if he leaves, it's over.
Ryan Lemond
Sinking ship.
Matt Jones
But I do think if Mark was going to get this thing back going, that's a step one. There are other steps, though. I mean, there are other steps that we have to wait and see.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, just with the Vince Louisville thing and it. The wind was blowing at that direction last night, I thought if that happened, a. The reaction to Vince is going to be more than he probably realizes. I mean, he is beloved in Lexington. I don't think that would have been the case moving forward. If you just leave directly for a rival. I mean, I was prepared to call him little dog. I told you all this last night. I was like, I'm going to.
Matt Jones
I'm going to call him little dog.
Shannon The Dude
I'm going to have to start calling him little dog. It will hurt me more than it will hurt him. But he will be the little Dog. If he does that.
Matt Jones
Give the sound. You were going to say, but big dog's still here.
Shannon The Dude
We don't have to get that. It's going to hurt me more than him. But I genuinely thought if he does go to Louisville, not just the reaction to Vince. I thought it'd be the end of Stoops because I can't see Stoops starting this mountain he's got to climb without Vince beside him. Because you assume if Vince left, you know, there's whispers about Brad White. I just don't know how Stoops could walk in that room. To having to rebuild everything and not having those guys around him.
Matt Jones
I think, you know. Well, there's a lot more parts of this and I want to do one more segment on it. Then I want to talk about yesterday, just in general, because it was a wild day. And then we hope to have a guest on to start the second hour. We are here in Iowa City. We got five people. What's your name? What? Tim. Tim. Five folks in Iowa City in a snowstorm at the Pizza Ranch. That's why the BBN is the best. We'll take a break. Be right back. This KSI, welcome back. It is the Kentucky sports radio here on the road trip Pizza Ranch in Iowa City. By the way, I'm a huge Pizza Ranch person. Can't wait for that buffet open. We're on central time here. So, Susan, show opens at 11. The buffet opens and we're going to go. Plus, we have a member of the Iowa basketball managers. Yes, Iowa basketball managers.
Shannon The Dude
Here you can clap.
Drew Franklin
Is the party room.
Matt Jones
Yeah, that's the party room. We're not getting enough party. Right. The Iowa basketball managers is here and he's going to take us to show us the Iowa basketball facility. When it's over, I'm going to be. I'm going to be shooting just like Caitlin Clark.
Shannon The Dude
I'm going to be Luke Garza.
Matt Jones
You're going to be Luke Garza. I'm going to be BJ Armstrong.
Shannon The Dude
I'm going to be one of the McCaffrey.
Ryan Lemond
Shall we talk about what he said, the Caitlin Cardick effect, what it's done for the Iowa facilities and everything?
Matt Jones
Well, he said the women's facility has been way upgraded, so they deserve it. So, yeah, it's awesome. All right. Not surprisingly, Max Shannon Ryan got the lyrics wrong.
Shannon The Dude
I wondered if that was.
Matt Jones
First of all, it's the Osmonds, not the Jackson 5. And what did you say it was?
Ryan Lemond
One bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch of girls. That's what I said.
Matt Jones
Not the lyrics. One bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch. Girl.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, comma, comma, girl.
Matt Jones
He's talking to the girl. He. It's not one bad apple. Doesn't Spoil the whole bunch of girls. Yeah, it's one bad apple. Doesn't spoil the whole bunch.
Ryan Lemond
Comma, girl.
Drew Franklin
Never underestimate the importance of a comma.
Matt Jones
You let your comma out and it's a completely different scenario, Max, without the comma. Yes.
Max Duffy
Skip Bayless learned that this year with the comma. I don't know if you remember his tweet, but I was looking forward to the Jackson 5 from Rick and then he didn't play it, so Rick obviously picked up his mistake early.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And the Jackson 5 and the Osmonds, not alike at all.
Ryan Lemond
They were both really popular at the.
Matt Jones
Same time, but they don't do the same kind of music and they're like. They're not the same.
Ryan Lemond
I think once you hear the song though, you'll really enjoy it.
Matt Jones
Rick, see if you can find it. Okay, I will.
Shannon The Dude
All right, our guy with the Ryanisms needs to add that line.
Matt Jones
That was great. One bad apple. Don't spoil the whole bunch of girls. I don't know why you would have thought that that 8 year old Ryan heard that as you heard it wrong. Okay, so back to what we were talking about in terms of the year. Max, you were there when the culture was the best. I know you're not there now, but talk to me about the difference of when the culture was the best versus some of the stuff I've talked about that happened this year to me.
Max Duffy
And I bring this up all the time, but you still can't discount the impact of losing Coach Slyman, like, seriously, in that. In that locker room, in that whole facility, how good he was at leading men. Obviously Stoops is great, but that O line is the power of that team. Like that big blue wall used to be our identity. All those guys were NFL draft picks or future NFL players and they led the locker room. They would tell guys when to do things, how to do things. They just led from the front. Since then, that's fallen off. I mean, our O line's probably the worst group we have right now. And if you. If the big blue wall is crumbling, then everyone around it crumbles. And it's very hard for wide receivers to lead the pack.
Matt Jones
And it's not just playing the offensive line. Probably should be your, like, best character guys.
Max Duffy
Yes.
Matt Jones
And I think you could make an argument that a couple of them were our worst character guys this year.
Max Duffy
I mean, you saw Mincey at the concession.
Matt Jones
Like, I'm not trying to crush the kid, but he's at the concessions, he walks up in the game. It's not even halftime. The game is going on. It's in the middle of the third game.
Drew Franklin
Do they not have snacks in the locker room?
Max Duffy
He could get so many as well. Literally, you do.
Drew Franklin
That's the bigger problem for me is the discipline. I mean, you can. If you don't have discipline in your locker room, you have lost the entire team. And then once you lose the locker room, you can't get it back.
Max Duffy
And we don't know the circumstances around it. But also Waller's Instagram story about him. What are you doing?
Matt Jones
Maybe that's a family situation. I'm not trying to crush the kid, but he. DJ Waller posts a picture of him at a party in Florida the night before. So he wasn't even at the game.
Shannon The Dude
It was during the game on Instagram. It was like, where's the party tonight in Miami? Or something like that. And those are two guys. You went in the portal and probably paid good money for. Mincy especially. He was supposed to be one of the guys to come save the line. And he's in line getting hot dogs.
Matt Jones
Mincey. You know, a lot of people focus on Barion and Dion Walker. I think those guys could have worked harder, Ryan, without question. But I don't think they're the people that spoiled the locker room, do you? No, I think it was some of the other ones. But again, I'm not going to just put on those kids. The coaches let them do that, Ryan. Like, they let them do that.
Ryan Lemond
I think it's something that has been building over the last couple years, and for whatever reason, this year, it just seemed to finally catch up to them. You know, I think they kind of let some of their superstars slide over the years. I mean, we've talked about Lynn Bowden. Bowden could do whatever he wanted, and they kind of just let it go.
Matt Jones
I've talked about this, Max, but why did. Why was. Why were you guys able to overlook when Lynn did that stuff?
Max Duffy
I think you've mentioned it before. Maybe Calipari says you can have Juan, and he was that one for us. Like, we're fine with you doing whatever you want to do, but if you go out there on Saturday and don't perform, then you're not going to be out. He went out there and rushed for 240 a game through, you know, four touchdowns, ran for six. Like, if you want to do that, then we're happy because you're producing on the field. But if you're not producing on the field, you can't just do whatever you.
Drew Franklin
Want he wasn't out there getting hot dogs. I would have to.
Max Duffy
Right. And the majority of the team was also leading really well. And I don't know, it's just, it's obviously slipped. Stoop said it slipped. Like he said, it's my fault. I let it slip. That's why the reviews matter.
Matt Jones
He did say that. Do you think they can turn that around?
Shannon The Dude
I thought Macklin in the interview, a guy that came from another school has been here one year his post game he even said like someone asked how does this change? He's like the leadership has to change. And just hearing a player say that who had just gotten here. I know he came from a mid major but he probably seemed like he had an eye opening experience of just how out of control it might have been behind the scenes.
Matt Jones
Yeah. And then you know, I mean a lot of the quarterback position, I think Brock seems like a good guy. But when you're getting. When you're getting beat up. Shannon by offensive line getting beat up in part because of offensive linemen who are at the concession stage, it's hard to feel really excited about it. I mean, I will tell you, I don't know if this is true. Brock will not be here next year. I won't be shocked if he doesn't play football next year. And that's a pretty sad statement for what some of the other folks let happen. To be honest with you, I'm just being real. I kind of feel bad for that kid. I do.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Didn't work out here and he's not coming back to be second string. So if he goes somewhere else, he's going to have to be the starting quarterback wherever he ends up hit.
Shannon The Dude
He took at Tennessee. They Let a top 15 draft pick go untouched.
Matt Jones
Untouched.
Shannon The Dude
Just crushed him.
Matt Jones
Yeah. And he really wasn't the same after that. Okay, so let's say Vince is staying. What else has to happen to give you confidence next year? Like what else? What are the other pieces that need to fall into place?
Ryan Lemond
Just for me as a fan, I would think I want to see some staff changes. I think he's got to at least give the impression, make the effort to improve the staff. I think that'll go a long way for me. You know you're going to lose some of your superstar players this year. Some of them are going to go to the NFL draft. But I think you need to lock up though some of these guys that are kind of on the field.
Matt Jones
What about Wilcox? There's Ole Miss. Boards are saying they think Wilcox Will go to Ole Miss.
Ryan Lemond
He's the one. I was thinking you got to lock him up. You got to keep him here.
Matt Jones
Willie Rodriguez, keep him here. I think you need to make sure you try to keep.
Drew Franklin
There's got to be changes at the office.
Matt Jones
Cutter Bowley, you got to make sure you try to keep. Totally agree.
Ryan Lemond
You're going to lose some of the other guys, but those younger stars, you got to keep them here.
Matt Jones
I'm told Waller was not in Florida. That even though that said that. Okay, so that's.
Shannon The Dude
Why are we posting during the game about.
Matt Jones
Yeah, you shouldn't be posting during the game.
Max Duffy
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Yeah. No matter what. But I mean. Yes, that's to your point. Whether or not he was there or not, he's posting during a game. You know, that's not good.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah. I mean, some of these stories and you just add them all together just shows like, how is there zero discipline? And we're mentioning a lot of the people that came in out of the portal that we thought were good additions, and we don't have a lot of great things to say about what they brought to the program. And they were probably very expensive.
Matt Jones
All right, so we're going to talk about that now. I want to talk a little bit about this trip. We've had a lot of fun. And I got to tell you about the ESPN show yesterday, which was insane. We'll take a break and be right back. This is ksr. That was clearly a comma. No one bad apple. Don't spoil the whole bunch.
Ryan Lemond
Girl went right into it. There was no comma. There was no pause.
Drew Franklin
A whole bunch of girls added the.
Matt Jones
Word of handmade girl, plural.
Ryan Lemond
I think. I think Donny Osmond sang it that way a couple times.
Matt Jones
I don't think he ever sang it. Eight, five, nine. Well, we're not answering the phone right now. Okay. So one kind of sad note, but I do want to note, since we have a guy here who's a manager for the University of Iowa basketball, Austin. He said, matt, my friend Brett passed away this weekend. He had a wife and two young kids. He said he lived in Kentucky, but he was actually an Iowa fan. All of his buddies were UK fans, but he loved Iowa basketball. So I think it's cool you guys are in Iowa City and going to tour the Iowa facilities today. So that's kind of neat. So for Brett, we will do it in his honor. We will tour the facilities.
Max Duffy
I'm just worried when they go to practice this afternoon, the uniforms aren't going to be washed and Dry ready. Seeing as he's taking the day off to come listen to us.
Matt Jones
Oh, that's not his job. Austin says that's not his.
Shannon The Dude
Dude. He's climbed that ladder.
Matt Jones
All right, let's talk about what happened yesterday. We got up, left Lexington like 7:15 in the morning, got off towards Cincinnati. I was doing espn Bengals pregame at Jefferson Social. I got to say to you Bengals fans, I know there's a lot of you that are also UK fans. Y'all are the drunkest people I've ever seen in my life. I mean, the Bengals play the Steelers. They're Jefferson social. Well, first of all, when we get there, at first I asked the waitress, I'm like, will there be a lot of people here today? And she goes, oh, wait and see. She was like, starting about 11:30, it's a club in here. And I was like, oh, come on, it's 11:30 in the morning. Stop it. And you know, I gotta do a radio show. And you know, Shannon, a lot of times I don't even like people to talk during the race. I've heard.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, got another one.
Matt Jones
Number six.
Shannon The Dude
At least.
Drew Franklin
@ least once a remote. Hey, man, keep it down back there. Keep it down, keep it down.
Matt Jones
But I understood, okay? There's going to be a lot of things. First of all, ton of Kentucky fans came by. Probably had 50 people come by right over the course of the thing. So thank you all to all that did. It was awesome to meet people, including thank you to the young woman who we had a John Daly life size stand up at our bar and it disappeared and we didn't know where it was. She told me that she was there, partied so hard one time, she woke up the next morning with the John Daly thing in her bed next to her.
Drew Franklin
I'm a big John Daly fan. I would have loved to have seen.
Matt Jones
It, but she said, I looked up and I turned around and there was a John Dailey life size figure. That would be scary if you didn't know that.
Shannon The Dude
You know, we were really worried about someone stealing that ended up at a frat house. But I think that's the way our John Daley statue need to go out. It went home with someone.
Matt Jones
But I want to tell you right now, if you got some time today, go download the Sunday Mornings with Matt Meyer and podcast. If you haven't subscribed and downloaded anyway, do that for me just as a. Just because it's good. ESPN likes our numbers, but you need to listen, especially hour one's fun. But two and Three. How loud was it there?
Ryan Lemond
For a while, it turned into MTV spring break at Daytona Beach. I mean, it was rocking in there.
Matt Jones
And I was trying to do a radio show. I couldn't hear.
Ryan Lemond
I was two feet away from you and couldn't hear a word you admire.
Matt Jones
I couldn' I could barely hear Myron. I could not hear my producers. There's people dancing, grinding on each other. Mario was drunk by 11:55am off half a fireball. Mario, did you say he almost threw up on someone?
Shannon The Dude
Oh, I can't tell on my guy.
Matt Jones
But I'm gonna tell on.
Drew Franklin
I'm not gonna deny it.
Shannon The Dude
We met some friends at a big table. We were hanging out with them KSR listeners. They were like, hey, before y'all go, let's do a little fireball for the road. So we do a fireball together. And Mario's almost came back up. But that.
Matt Jones
It happens.
Max Duffy
It was early.
Matt Jones
I could tell that Mario has a look when he's drunk. Shane.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Matt Jones
His eyes get a little happy, and he starts going, well, the feagles and the sailors. I'm like, it's not even noon, and we're driving to Iowa today.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Mario got a quick start.
Drew Franklin
He's got more fireballs, I think, in the back seat. We need to, like, you know, slow the pace a little bit.
Ryan Lemond
His day started. He couldn't even walk up your driveway at your house. He slipped and fell down.
Matt Jones
He's not quit for snow. He couldn't not walk up my driveway. He fell down multiple times trying to get up my driveway.
Drew Franklin
But I just want to go back to how loud it was on that bar when I walked in. I mean, and it's like the bass is rolling. They've got the music turned up to 11, and I'm going, how in the world are they doing a radio show right now?
Matt Jones
It was very loud. It didn't really come through the mic. Now, my producer was terrified because they were not playing the radio. Mix clean versions of these songs. The good thing was it didn't really. You couldn't really hear the words through the mic. You could just hear the noise. So you couldn't really hear. But my producer is freaking out. You can tell. He's like, what's going on? Myron is. I mean, we can't hear each other. And then my producer be like, talk about the Jaguars. And I'm like, hey, Myron, travel. Like, it was. It was. You need to listen to it. It was a circus.
Max Duffy
We got out of there for a little bit because it was Too loud for us, me and Drew. And then we almost froze to death. But, no, it was an awesome experience.
Matt Jones
So then we drive. We drove last night. This is one of the craziest things I've ever seen. We have this thing where who picks? The restaurant is gonna rotate. Drew was up first.
Shannon The Dude
Night one. I got this.
Matt Jones
First, I thought we'd get to, like, Bloomington or Normal, Illinois. But then I was making such good time. I made good time.
Ryan Lemond
We made great time.
Matt Jones
Good time. We were. We got through there. Then I was like, peoria. And then we got through there, and then I said, drew, it looks like we're gonna be around Galesburg. Which I didn't even know was a place. Galesburg, Illinois, for dinner. I said, pick us a place in Galesburg, Illinois. He says, nothing in Galesburg, but there's a barbecue place called Big Cats Barbecue in Knoxville, Illinois. Right. Yeah.
Shannon The Dude
I was excited about it.
Matt Jones
We pull in. We pull in. And again, Ryan doesn't know his name a lot of the time. And when we pull in, Ryan goes, we've been here before.
Drew Franklin
And you go, no, we haven't.
Matt Jones
No, we haven't. What are you talking about? We've been to Big Cat's Barbecue in Illinois. And then all of a sudden, I look and I go, wait a minute.
Ryan Lemond
We have been here.
Matt Jones
We have been here before. I don't know how this happened, but many of you may remember our trip to the caucuses in Iowa.
Ryan Lemond
Yes.
Matt Jones
We did a post game show in Knoxville, Illinois, and a girl. Only one person came. We didn't know we were gonna stop there. We were like, hey, if you're close by, come. A woman drove. She got there. We couldn't get service. We had to do the show sitting in our van. And she got in the van.
Ryan Lemond
She did.
Matt Jones
Which they probably don't say you should do.
Drew Franklin
Don't get in a white van.
Matt Jones
Don't get in a white guy with a bunch of guys. But she did. And the four of us did the post game show with her sitting in the van. And that was at Big Cat's Barbecue.
Ryan Lemond
Big Cat's parking lot. Yep. No doubt about it. We ate barbecue, went out in the parking lot to do the post game show. She said she left her husband at home and came to sit in with us.
Matt Jones
How in the world. Like, what are the odds that you would end up in a tiny town? We had to drive five miles off the interstate to find the restaurant, and we would end up at the exact same restaurant, Drew, that we ended up at five years ago.
Shannon The Dude
Listen, you want Me to pick a restaurant. I'm going to pick the best one for the road.
Drew Franklin
He's consistent, at least. You know, even when I was looking.
Shannon The Dude
At it had a picture, and I was like, that looks like that place we were at that one time. And I thought it was like New Mexico because, you know, we're everywhere. And then Ryan spotted it. That little nose perked up as soon as he stepped out of the van. He's like, I've been here before.
Matt Jones
So you. What did you think? You know, your. Your Trav traveling across the country. Max, what did you think of Illinois?
Max Duffy
It was good. It was obviously very cold.
Matt Jones
We.
Max Duffy
I know a lot of people commented on Twitter that they thought it was strange. We're all still wearing our snow jackets in the car. Matt did keep the air conditioner down to 60 for some reason. That's okay. But, no, it was. It was great. I know Drew thought there was possibly Nyquil in his beans.
Shannon The Dude
I do feel like I was given something I didn't need.
Max Duffy
And then rip. To the staff member that passed away mid. Setting up the Christmas decorations in there. There was Christmas decorations, but they were half done and all the boxes were left out.
Matt Jones
You really like Christmas decorations. Why is that?
Max Duffy
I don't know. I just really like Christmas. I've always liked Christmas light. Christmas lights.
Matt Jones
Do people do that in Australia? Do they put up lights and stuff?
Max Duffy
Oh, yeah. Christmas exists.
Matt Jones
But why are you so. You're enamored by it?
Max Duffy
I don't know. I just like it, I guess whenever I was growing up, I just like Americans.
Drew Franklin
Do Christmas lights better?
Max Duffy
Well, you do it better because we don't get the snow and we don't get the cold. We do it in the warm. So, like, the sun never goes down, so you never really see the lights. Like, over here, it's. There's snow, there's darkness, there's lights. It's awesome.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So we. And then we got to Iowa City last night, and here we are. Now, to those of you listening, I need your help. The way this works, we're kind of in between places. All right, we're trying. There's no clear place to go. We were going to go to my buddy's ranch tonight, but we can't because the UK game on Tuesday, the timing doesn't work. So we think we're going to stay tonight in Kearney, Nebraska, home of the Lopez. Kearney?
Max Duffy
Yeah, home.
Matt Jones
The local Kearney.
Drew Franklin
Like a carnival bar.
Ryan Lemond
She's from Omaha, so.
Matt Jones
Kearney, Nebraska, it looks like Kearney. Why do they say Kearney, it has an E. Do they not know what e's are in Nebraska? They have a. Lots of weird people. Okay, so Kearney, Nebraska is where we're going to be. K, E A R, N E Y. I'm a little worried because it's in the middle of nowhere and. But we need a person. I'm not worried about like, I'll find a place to stay and eat. I need some. We need someone to continue this streak. This streak's been going on for a decade.
Drew Franklin
Can you just follow us to the next.
Matt Jones
Well, you could, you could. That's a long way for you though, isn't it? Yeah. Well, you're welcome to come.
Shannon The Dude
There you go.
Matt Jones
But if you are in Kearney, Nebraska, I would love to have you come so we can continue the street. I don't know where it'll be. I'll tweet it out tonight. Probably will be in the lobby of whatever hotel we stay at, but. Ryan, Kearney, Nebraska. That one rural place in New Mexico is where we thought the streak was going to end. And somebody called their dad and told him to come and he came and he didn't even know who we were. I'm a little worried about Kearney, Nebraska tomorrow night.
Ryan Lemond
I've never heard of Kearney, Nebraska. Don't even know where it is in Nebraska. So I got to do my own research.
Matt Jones
You had a buddy that coached there.
Max Duffy
I was going to say home. The Lopez. Tristan Yeoman is my former long snapper. Was a coach there.
Matt Jones
Former Kentucky player.
Max Duffy
Former Kentucky player. So we do have maybe a get out of jail free card. He said he might make a few calls if we get desperate.
Matt Jones
I don't want people though who do. I don't know who we are to.
Max Duffy
Feel like they know who Tristan is and Tristan by default knows who I am. So, you know, roundabout way.
Matt Jones
Yeah. All right. Well, either way, tomorrow we will probably be in Carne, Nebraska. 859-280-2287. We're going to take a break and we will be right back. We are on the road here in. Where are we? Iowa City. This is. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. 859-280-2287. We here in Iowa City. Some Carney, Nebraska facts.
Ryan Lemond
All right, let's go.
Matt Jones
Sand Hill Cap. Sandhill Crane Capital of America, corporate headquarters of the Buckle.
Drew Franklin
The Buckle.
Shannon The Dude
I forgot my belt. Maybe we could run by there.
Matt Jones
Do you remember that? You know, the. Remember the Buckle?
Max Duffy
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Like you go to a mall and there's a Buckle.
Matt Jones
That's right. How about that?
Ryan Lemond
I didn't know what that was. Now, when you say that at store in the mall, of course, is that still around?
Drew Franklin
I think so, yeah.
Shannon The Dude
Mall still has a bucket.
Drew Franklin
Let's go get some skinny jeans.
Matt Jones
I bet they have a good buckle there. If that's the capital. Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Better than all those other knockoffs.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So we will. We will be doing that. Now, the snow. What do we think of the snow? We didn't expect to encounter this snow.
Drew Franklin
What do you mean we didn't?
Matt Jones
Who didn't?
Drew Franklin
Going out in the Midwest in the middle of winter, you didn't think there.
Matt Jones
Was no forecast for snow?
Drew Franklin
Well, I mean, there was if you checked it.
Ryan Lemond
Most of us brought boots. A couple of us didn't bring boots.
Drew Franklin
Look who's got snow boots on.
Matt Jones
I'm not worried about it. These are Joe Fresh Goods shoes. They're going to be good. They're going to be fine.
Shannon The Dude
There's a moment yesterday we were driving and you were like, ryan, why don't you look up the weather? And I kind of thought, is this our first time looking at the weather on this, this trip?
Ryan Lemond
It looks like where we're going, it's gonna be. But cold. But no snow.
Drew Franklin
It's butt cold here. It's 20 degrees right now.
Matt Jones
It is going to be very cold. What did you think, guys? I'll start with you, Max. Of the. This weekend, all the fights over the flags on the field, it was.
Max Duffy
It was crazy, wasn't it? I mean, there was four or five of them. It wasn't just one. I think probably the first few teams did it and then the other teams thought they'd get involved. If I was to give my honest take, I don't see the point in. You got to be gracious when you win, right? Just leave the flags away. Leave them out of the logos. Like, I know you won, but is that not good enough? Like, I don't know. I just think, be gracious. When you win, don't put the flag in there and don't start.
Drew Franklin
If you beat us, you can plant your flag, but you gotta replace your divot. It's just like golf. But, yeah, I mean, if you don't like it, beat the team is what I always say. So. I mean, there was pepper spray involved in one of the fights was at the Michigan, Ohio State.
Matt Jones
First of all, I'm shocked at that reaction from you, Max. Like, I love the flag planning. If you don't like it, beat them. If you don't like it, beat Them.
Drew Franklin
Quit crying about it.
Matt Jones
The people going around and pushing each other. Beat them, beat them. They're on your home field. They beat you. Now. It's kind of silly to plant a flag Drew into artificial turf because you can't plant it. Like it doesn't really work. But like I'm kind of with Michigan guy. They got to learn how to lose.
Shannon The Dude
I'm not anti celebrating on the other team's field. But also like the Ohio State player that lost his mind trying to. To get the flag. I can see why he would also take offense to it and lose his mind also.
Matt Jones
I didn't. I mean I don't mind the fights. I'm for it. Let. Let them go now. The pepper spray. I think the like it feels like they overreacted with the pepper spray. Right? Like don't you think that's a little much?
Ryan Lemond
I know you guys may know the answer to this. From what I thought, the only people that got pepper sprayed were the Michigan guys. Like the.
Matt Jones
Instigators and Pat40 got pepper sprayed.
Shannon The Dude
Columbus police, they know who they're.
Max Duffy
The policeman seemed like he just closed his eyes and just held the button down. Like it was just going everywh.
Matt Jones
He was pepper spraying everybody. Like it feels like there is. I don't know. First of all, Gus Johnson way over. He way overreacted. He was like go. And then Gus Johnson's call. He lost his voice. He lost his voice in the middle of it.
Drew Franklin
That's worth playing.
Matt Jones
That was. Yeah, Rick, you gotta find that. It's on my Twitter account. Rick, you think you can find that? Gus Johnson calling the. The interception. I'll do my best.
Drew Franklin
You gotta dig back a little bit. But you'll find it.
Matt Jones
You'll find it. It was on. It was on Saturday. The Gus Johnson. He sounded like a boy going through puberty. When Ohio State got that interception. That was great.
Ryan Lemond
Sound like Peter Brady when he lost his voice.
Matt Jones
How embarrassing like was it for you Drew, who likes to talk so much trash to Louisville to when we got just destroyed.
Shannon The Dude
I wouldn't say embarrassing is the word because I was more just upset with Kentucky's own problems. If it had been a one off situation, Louisville just coming here and stolen one. I think that'd be embarrassing. But it was. We had other issues like as we said, a player getting a hot dog or what's the future of Kentucky. So I'm not dodging the Louisville trash talk. But it's like I got enough problems to worry about Louisville celebrating.
Matt Jones
I've never been less nervous or sad about a loss to Louisville. Probably Ryan, because I expected it. From moment one, I just expected it. And then for me, it was all about, what are we doing for the future? I wanted to hear what Stoop said on the post game. Well, Ben, what'd you think about what he said? I mean, it was. It was like, I know there's some people with wishful thinking want me gone. Well, they're going to be disappointed. My butt's back to work. It was very. He was. He took responsibility, but he was also very defiant as well.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, that's what, like I said earlier, I want him to take that. But almost like he was, like, just telling everyone else, he does pay attention to the noise. He hears the noise. You can't be doing that. You're the head football coach. We gotta.
Matt Jones
But what about, like, saying, I know some of you want me gone, so you shouldn't say, but I ain't going anywhere.
Drew Franklin
He's kind of like Billy, he's like, I'll take responsibility, but I'm not saying I'm sorry. Okay. Like, that's what happened. And here we are.
Matt Jones
Do you like that? Like, it's weird to say with such definitiveness, y'all gonna be upset that want me gone. I'm here.
Drew Franklin
It shows a commitment to me. It's better than last year when he was flirting with Texas A and M. I kind of like that because I want him back. Now, if you don't want him back, you don't like that answ but for the people he do.
Matt Jones
I know, but I can't. I can't articulate what I'm trying to say. I mean, here's what I would. Look, Stoops is coming back. I want him to do well. I will support him in his attempts to come back. Stoops considered certainly and almost went and maybe even tried to go, depending on who you talked to, to Texas A and M last year. And he did it. And if he had decided to do it, he wouldn't care that he made a lot of people sad. I think it is kind of wrong to sit there and go, I know a lot of y'all want me gone, but I'm coming back. Well, a lot of us wanted you to stay last year when you thought about leaving. Right. Like, I just thought that was a little much. I think I said to somebody, I thought 80 to 90% of his post game comments were dead on and what you need to say. But Drew, I didn't love that one because I felt like it was. It's just a little chesty for me. Dude, you went four and a. Like he went four and eight. Now he did say, I get why you all are upset. I appreciate that. It wasn't like Cal who was always like, why are you getting upset? But then he also. What's weird to me about Mark Stoops is he will say one thing that's exactly right and then counter it with the exact opposite opinion. So he'll say, I understand why people are upset. I feel like I let them down. I'm going to fix it. But by the way, I've done a bunch of stuff here nobody else has. Well, I thought you said you understood why they were upset. Like, do you understand? Because if you understand, you wouldn't say that second part. I don't. It's almost like he. There's like two sides of him at war and he ends up saying both of those things.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, that's why I brought it up right away in our. In the first hour of the conversation. I didn't love the just I know you want me gone part. It's. I mean, these are the people that are supposed to be supporting you, and you're kind of like, I'm coming back anyway, whatever you think. And I just don't feel like that's a good way. If you're really trying to fix this and rally everyone behind you. Kind of just saying, I'm doing this regardless didn't seem like the greatest way to get everybody behind you.
Max Duffy
When he said he was taking his butt back to work the next day, I wanted a Mike Tyson style video of him walking into work that day. I wanted him to kind of have the butt cheeks out. But I agree with you, though, Matt. It kind of sounded like he was like almost, you know, when you're fighting with your girlfriend or something, you admit to it, but you're almost doing a Billy. You admit to it, but you don't fully admit.
Matt Jones
Yeah, you don't always admit to it.
Max Duffy
And yeah, it wasn't. So that's why. I mean, it is embarrassing what happened against Louisville and we never want to see that again. So there's got to be changes. And hopefully he makes a harsh review and makes some changes.
Shannon The Dude
There's just so much to do, including the offensive line and he's. He said with a pretty detailed plan a week or two ago, you know, Wolford's a great recruiter. We're going to go out, we're going to fix this offensive line. And the first piece of news is an offensive lineman leaving you're going the wrong way already.
Matt Jones
Concession stand.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Matt Jones
We will take a break, Come back hour number two. This is Kentucky Sports Radio on the road.

Matt Jones highlights Stoops' unequivocal statement about returning, emphasizing the necessity of his leadership.
Matt Jones [06:00]: "Stoops says he's going to stay. And then yesterday a lot of stuff starts happening."
Mixed Reactions:
The hosts express a spectrum of emotions regarding Stoops' return. Shannon voices concerns about Stoops' true commitment, suggesting a possible spiteful return amidst program struggles.
Shannon "The Dude" [06:34]: "I'm worried how it's going to look if he's truly committed... I'm just worried he's just coming back to just say you don't want me here."
Conversely, Drew Franklin remains optimistic, citing Stoops' track record of eight straight bowl games as a positive indicator for the program's future.
Drew Franklin [06:34]: "I'm happy if he's coming back... I still believe the three of you."
Impact of Decommitments:
The team delves into recent decommitments, including key players like Josh Katis' brother and Marquise Davis, which have affected UK’s recruiting class ranking from 23 to 28. The potential departure of standout player Vince Merrow to rival Louisville further complicates the scenario.
Matt Jones [04:44]: "Yesterday a lot of stuff, stuff starts happening... recruiting class ranking went from 23 to 28."

The hosts express concerns over player behavior and discipline within the team, citing incidents that reflect negatively on the program's culture.
Concession Stand Incident:
Gerald Mincy's walk to the concession stand during a game becomes a symbolic example of the lack of discipline.
Matt Jones [11:00]: "The result did not surprise me at all... culminates in that video of Gerald Mincy going to the concession stand during the game."
Social Media Missteps:
DJ Waller's Instagram post during a game, despite not being present, raises questions about player accountability.
Ryan Lemond [17:32]: "He did say he was taking his butt back to work the next day... but you got to have Durham."
Recruitment and Leadership Concerns:
The absence of strong leadership from the offensive line, previously the "big blue wall" of the team, is highlighted as a critical weakness.
Max Duffy [17:58]: "You still can't discount the impact of losing Coach Slyman... our O line's probably the worst group we have right now."
Shifting gears, the hosts share entertaining stories from their visit to Pizza Ranch amid heavy snowfall, showcasing the lighter side of their journey.
Crowded Party Room:
Despite the snowstorm, the Pizza Ranch party room buzzes with enthusiastic UK fans.
Shannon "The Dude" [02:44]: "I'm impressed with the number four here... a good crowd, given the circumstances outside."

Matt Jones [26:15]: "All this time I wanted to have it here... she woke up the next morning with the John Daly thing in her bed."
Loud Environment Challenges:
Conducting a radio show amidst the noisy Pizza Ranch proves challenging, resulting in missed communications and humorous exchanges.
Matt Jones [25:32]: "How loud was it there?... I couldn' I could barely hear Myron."
As the episode progresses, the hosts discuss their next destination—Kearney, Nebraska—while reflecting on their Iowa City experience.
Journey to Kearney, Nebraska:
Despite uncertainties about the location, the team remains upbeat about continuing their road trip.
Matt Jones [32:10]: "So we think we're going to stay tonight in Kearney, Nebraska... Kearney, Nebraska, it looks like Kearney."
Local Insights:

"Stoops says he's going to stay. And then yesterday a lot of stuff starts happening." [04:44]
Shannon "The Dude" on Leadership Concerns:
"I'm worried how it's going to look if he's truly committed... I'm just worried he's just coming back to just say you don't want me here." [06:34]
