So there's a lot going on. I'll start with. Let's just go over the most important thing today. Today's my mom's birthday. Happy birthday to my mom. She probably wouldn't want me to tell the age, but I'm gonna go ahead and do it. She's 71 years old, so. Happy birthday to my mom and looks amazing for 71. You would not think my mom was 71 if you. If you saw her.

I mentioned that to you last night. Both your Larry and Karen, they both. Both look remarkably young for their age.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah. And I think I look generally young for my age, so I think we've kind of gotten that past gene pool, that gene pool pretty, Pretty well. But mom's 71, so, you know, I would say say happy birthday to her, but she's not reachable by social media, by anyone. So you can just do it at your home and wave.

[Ryan Lemond]

I hope Larry takes her out to. What would think they'll go tonight? McDonald's Cracker Barrel.

The McDonald's birthday. You know, in that area. Probably gondolier.

That's the go to.

Yeah, probably gondolier. I think. I think that'll be the birthday meal. We'll see. But. But 71. So. Happy birthday to Mom. The. The last night. We'll talk about a little later, we did the. We gave away $4,000 from Country Roads Spirits. And what an exciting night, wasn't it? I mean, we'll talk about it later. But when that fun bar was full, people were yelling, and it was energetic and at the end, very tense.

It was packed, and there was a lot of energy in here. And we started the game all the way through the whole first half. But then when it got whittled down.

[Matt Jones]

It did get really tense. We'll. We'll talk about what happened, but it was. It was tense in here. I loved it. And somebody walked away quite a bit of money. $4,000. So. Yes. Before we get started, though, I want to go up some stuff last Friday. Okay. So you may remember I was going to speak to the Kentucky Young Farmers Association.

[Ryan Lemond]

That's right.

[Matt Jones]

And I asked you all, what do you think? You know, I got this cowboy hat. People seem to like the cowboy hat.

[Ryan Lemond]

So, you know, I'm going the Young Farmers Association.

You, Shannon, you. Drew's gone, by the way. Today you said, shannon, wear the hat.

Drew said, wear the hat. So I said, all right, I'll wear it. Then I got to two or three hours before and I got a little scared.

Oh.

Because here was my mindset. What? I don't want him to think I'm making fun of.

[Shannon The Dude]

Yeah, no, I did see that.

[Matt Jones]

I didn't want him to think I was making fun of him. Right. And so I was like, well, maybe don't wear that. And then. And whoever wrote this, this is on you. Somebody wrote the text machine and said, hey, I'm part of the young farmers Association. I can't be there tonight. But don't worry. If you want to wear the hat, there'll be a bunch of people in hats. And I went, all right. Then I took a shower, and I need a haircut. Like, I got to get. I'm getting a haircut tomorrow. So my hair was kind of. It's too long right now. Now. And because I don't have as much hair on top as I used to, it, like, when it grows on the sides, it grows quicker than the top, and that doesn't look good. Yeah, so the hair didn't look great. So I was like, all right, Shannon, wear that. Yeah, right?

[Shannon The Dude]

Yeah, go for it.

[Matt Jones]

So put the hat on. Ready to go? I'm like, I'm. I'm. I'm. The key is own it. You know what I mean? The key is own it.

[Shannon The Dude]

Confidence.

[Matt Jones]

Confidence. I kind of looked in the mirror. I was like, maybe I'm giving off Shannon. JBL vibes, you know what I mean? Because I had a sports coat on.

[Ryan Lemond]

You wear your boots?

[Matt Jones]

Wore my boots. New boots. So I did feel like I looked like a million bucks. Yeah, I did feel like it. And I think I actually did objectively look pretty good. But the moment I walked into the Hilton, saw, I'm gonna be the only person in a cowboy hat.

[Ryan Lemond]

Nobody.

[Matt Jones]

One guy.

[Ryan Lemond]

One guy.

[Matt Jones]

One guy. There was only one other person in a room of 300 plus people that had a cowboy hat on. So now, luckily, a lot of people in the room are listeners to the show, and they would come up to me and go, glad you wore the cowboy.

[Ryan Lemond]

Nice, nice.

[Matt Jones]

And to those people, thank you.

Because I was questioning the decision at.

[Ryan Lemond]

First because you are 6 4, and you got a cowboy hat on, and.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah. And probably the only person with, like, a jacket on, you know, they're dressed like they're going farming. Right?

[Ryan Lemond]

Okay.

[Matt Jones]

So I owned it. Said, you know what? I'm just a cowboy. I can't help it. They're not as cowboy as me. You know what I mean? Right?

[Shannon The Dude]

Yeah.

[Matt Jones]

So I went with it, got up and spoke. It was a great group. It was very nice. It was. It was cool. People. People came up to me, were great. I think they liked my. My message, which is one about Kentucky and unity and. But I will say, when you're not used to wearing a cowboy hat and it's just you and one other person in a room of 300, it can be a little. Did you know. I mean, you can be a little like, did I make the right decision?

[Ryan Lemond]

Did you and the other dude have a moment with.

[Matt Jones]

He. I like this guy. He was from Fulton county, which is, you know.

[Ryan Lemond]

Oh, yeah.

[Matt Jones]

Far into the state. He came and sat at my table, I think, Shannon. Because he. We were cowboys.

[Ryan Lemond]

Brotherly.

[Matt Jones]

There was a. There was a hat bond.

[Ryan Lemond]

Yeah.

[Shannon The Dude]

Yeah. I could see that. You probably didn't have any overalls that you could have worn.

[Matt Jones]

So this group wasn't wearing overalls. This was young farmers. They were basically trucker hats.

[Shannon The Dude]

Oh, I got you.

[Matt Jones]

I can tell the. The current farmer vibe is trucker hat, like bubble vest. Right.

[Shannon The Dude]

So like, bro country singer almost.

[Matt Jones]

It is a little bit bro country, Brian. But. But that. But that's. That's what I did. So then that was over. Ryan. I walked over to Manchester City Music hall and went to the music concert for my friend Byron Roberts. You want to talk about good vibes? I mean, this is a guy. People in eastern Kentucky who like music in eastern Kentucky. If you like, like Tyler Childers kind of music, you probably know who Byron Roberts is. He's the one that created that kicking it on the. That I went to. But he's part. If you've been to a concert of somebody that is from eastern Kentucky, he was there.

[Ryan Lemond]

Okay.

[Matt Jones]

Right. They did this concert for him at Manchester Music hall when I bought tickets, because, like, I love that guy and he's. He's battling cancer, and I wanted to go support him and. But I didn't know how many people would be there. Place was packed.

[Ryan Lemond]

Wow. Really?

[Matt Jones]

All people there to help that guy? All the musicians donated their time.

[Ryan Lemond]

Yeah.

[Matt Jones]

I mean, you want to talk about good vibes in a place. I mean, you know, imagine what life you've lived, Shannon, where a thousand people would come to honor you, to help you raise money to fight your disease.

[Ryan Lemond]

Very touching.

[Shannon The Dude]

We could all.

[Matt Jones]

That's pretty amazing. I went up to him and gave him a hug, and he was crying. I mean, he just had a line of people. Great music from almost all the artists from this area. Not all of them, but most of them. So it was a great night all the way around.

[Ryan Lemond]

I'm sure every artist said something nice to him. I'm sure he cried the Whole night.

[Matt Jones]

He was crying the whole night. Yeah, which I would too.

[Ryan Lemond]

I would.

[Matt Jones]

I would too. And a lot of, a lot of listeners to this show. So it was just a good vibes weekend. Then of course we got Saturday and played Alabama scored 97 points which normally Ryan, you think would be enough.

[Ryan Lemond]

97 at home, that's a win.

[Matt Jones]

You think that's when. But Alabama also good and they also scored a lot of points and they scored 102 and we lost. What were your thoughts on the game really?

[Ryan Lemond]

First of all, a really fun game to watch. I mean it was really entertaining. That was two really good teams playing at a really high level. But you know, going into the season we all thought Alabama was going to be the team to beat in the sec. They returned a lot of guys from their Final four team. They haven't played that way. But then we saw Saturday how good Alabama can really be. That's a really, really good team. But I really, I thought Kentucky played really, really well.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah, I thought Kentucky played really well on offense. Yeah. I told you in the game who I was worried about and that was Grant Nelson. And in the first half he, he.

[Ryan Lemond]

Was little Braun in the first half.

[Matt Jones]

If he, if he's not there, we, I think we win the game because we get a lead in the first half we probably keep. But we didn't because he, we couldn't stop him. And in the second half, Sears, I mean they basically, you know, J. Billis, you always says if two teams are pretty even, give me the team with the two. If two best players. They had the two best players. I mean Grant Sears and Nelson are probably better than anybody we have. I think our next five are probably better than some of the guys they have. But like they got the top two guys. They both performed and they won. And when I watched at the end, I didn't feel like bad about it, but I just felt like, look, they were better, you know, that doesn't mean if we played them again they won't be better or that we wouldn't be better. But they were better and we were not able to guard them at all. And I heard Rob Doster on the field of 68 say. And I think he's, I think he's right about this. Kentucky plays a way to where we, our defense is not good. So when we play a good team, like we don't have a margin for error. You know what I mean? We have to be good the whole game because if we're not good for the whole game against a Good team. We're going to lose. So perfect scenario to me is game's tied at 81, we've gotten to the point where we're equal to them and then we have a run of three, two minutes that we screw up and then where it's over right there. Yeah, the run where Butler misses the pass, Amari blocks a shot, they get the own rebound, kick it out for three, we come down, Almondor misses the three, Butler makes kind of a weird shot. Like we had a two minute stretch that lost us the game because our margin for error is so small, because our defense is not good.

[Ryan Lemond]

Yeah, the, our lack of defense at times allows other teams to go on big runs too.

[Matt Jones]

Like 8, 4 runs that were 9, 0 or more. See, it's gonna be. You're just not gonna win a lot of games where you get 4, 90 runs. Right? Who was it we played the other night and had 3, 100 runs? Well, you're, we're gonna win when that happens. Most of the time they had 4, 90 runs. And you know, I've said all year, I don't think our defense, like, I don't expect it to get a lot better. I still don't expect it to get a lot better. I think it's gotten a little better. But we had no answer for Grant Nelson. Yeah, we had no answer for Grant Nelson. Carr can't guard him. And then if you listen after the game, I actually thought that, that the analysis Nate Oates gave of the game. I really like Mark Pope and Nate Oates because they tell you what they did. You know what I mean? Nate Oates said, we decided that there were certain people on Kentucky that were seals. Now, he didn't call them out, but he's talking about Travis Perry, Kobe Braya and to some extent Jackson Robinson. But really Perry and Brea. And he said, we saw seals on the court and when we did, we were going to make sure to get our whales. He was talking about Sears, Nelson and then the other guy, I can't remember, get our whales on their seals. And he would run action and there was somebody online who broke this down. They would run action to where their whales got one on one with our seals and they ate.

[Ryan Lemond]

Took it right at him and took.

[Matt Jones]

It right at him.

[Ryan Lemond]

Yep.

[Matt Jones]

And I think he's mostly talking about Perry, Bray and maybe Carr. There were one or two plays with Robinson, but really I think he was talking about Perry and Brea and he was like, we were going to take them.

[Ryan Lemond]

They did too.

[Matt Jones]

And he said Our whales take their seals. And I thought, you know what, I don't think that's disrespectful. He's just being honest about what they did.

[Ryan Lemond]

I think probably Car is somebody he's also talking about because every time Nelson got one on one with Car, he was going right to the basket.

[Matt Jones]

They really abused Travis. Yeah, I don't blame him, but I mean, like, what's he going to do, right? He's just not. Sears is better than him. And then they would switch Nelson took him a couple. He's got no chance with that. Same with Bray. I mean, they just can't. These can't guard those guys. And so it was very smart. They, they went looking for their matchup. They kept moving the ball around till they got their matchup and then once they got their matchup, they, that guy either scored or he found an open shooter and that was that.

[Ryan Lemond]

I want to ask you this because the guy sent me some stats saying, well, maybe one reason our defense is numbers are so bad. We've played the best offensive teams in the country.

[Matt Jones]

I think that's certainly part of it, for sure. No doubt. But that's who we're going to play.

[Ryan Lemond]

Yeah.

[Matt Jones]

And we still got more coming. We still got some more coming. We still got Auburn coming.

[Ryan Lemond]

Alabama again, Alabama again.

[Matt Jones]

So, you know, that's just how it is. But I still thought it was a good game. I'm not down about the game. I thought we could lose. We beat what A and M before and so I don't think it made as big a difference. Yeah, but they're better than us and that's the way it is.

[Ryan Lemond]

Does it, does the loss change the way you think about this team even a little bit?

[Matt Jones]

No.

[Ryan Lemond]

Me neither.

[Matt Jones]

No, because I think we are. I think there's four, maybe three elite teams. Probably three. I think Duke, Auburn and Alabama are elite. I had Tennessee, but I don't know now I don't think they can score.

[Ryan Lemond]

Andy Shannon's vandy knocked him off.

[Matt Jones]

So I kind of think Tennessee's now in a second tier group that includes us, Marquette, Iowa State, probably some other teams I can't think of right this minute. Michigan State and those two two tier teams can beat a one tier team, but you better play perfect. Yeah, and we didn't play Perfect.

[Ryan Lemond]

Yeah.

[Matt Jones]

8, 5, 9, 2. Well, no, not yet. We're not gonna open. I got a lot more to talk about. Mark Pope's team at BYU was 275th in the country in fouls drawn. Okay. I don't know where we are, but we're at least in the sec, not as good at it.

I think that part of it is because the way he plays, you shoot a lot of jump shots. But part of it is you might have to adjust. And when these games get called physically, you have to take advantage and get some free throws on your own.

You know, you look just. Yeah. The amount of free throws shot, our opponent has been shooting much more free throws than we've been shooting in SEC play.

I was in that train. When you asked this question last time, I said, I'm starting to feel a little sorry for the guy. Here is a Hall of Fame coach, one of the best college coaches in the history of the game. And his legacy is about to be tarnished because they're awful right now at Arkansas.

And one of them that pops up there was these two guys from Arkansas and they said they had researched and they pointed out John Roebuck and Dwayne Peavey not being with him as part of the problem. They had gone that far into the hole to know Robick, by the way. They're right.

I just want to say, not trying to be rude, but he might have the worst staff in the country. I don't know that he has a staff that works less hard. Do you think there's a staff that does game planning worse than his?

If there is, I don't know of them. You got guys in your staff that didn't even log in one time to your equipment here in Lexington when trying to, you know, help help your players out. He didn't even log into it one time during the season.

You need to see that one. Zuckerberg snuck a peek and then he, like, smiled like a little child. That's kind of strange. So I didn't. I did not watch any of it. I intentionally didn't watch any of it. But I'm just going to tell you, yesterday made me sad. Not because Trump's president. I've long accepted that that's fine. But there were three things that happened back to back, Ryan, that make me sad.

I'm not mad. I think a lot of Trump people want liberals to be mad. That's. That's why they go, you cry lib. You know, like they. They want you to be mad. I'M not mad. I was mad the first 2016. During that time, I'd get mad. I'm not mad anymore. Like, the thing about it is, people know who Trump is. They wanted him, right? They voted for him. They wanted him. So we're gonna get what people wanted. I get it. Three things made me sad, and it's going to be three different things, only one of which has to do with Trump. First thing that made me sad, Joe Biden pardoning his family. Yeah, I understand why he pardoned his son. I don't necessarily agree with it, but I get it. Plus, he had been charged with the crime. But pardoning his family preemptively is bad. First of all, there are a lot of people now who will think they did something, whether they did or not. I understand. People go, why they pardon him if he didn't do anything? You know, he pardoned his sister, who's like 80 years old. What could she have even done? She's like. But either way, a preemptive pardon is bad because it's gonna. Like, it'll. Now, Trump will do that with his kids. Right? He'll do that with his family. And you're basically telling future presidents, you can do this. And then when your president, their family, your family will know they can do.

Whatever they want because they're going to get pardoned.

[Matt Jones]

Because they're going to get pardoned at the end, pre. I don't know, maybe somebody can tell me, I don't know, that there have been preemptive pardons ever in American history. Maybe there have, but I don't know of it. That's a terrible precedent. So when I saw that Joe Biden did that, I was very disappointed because a lot of. You know, I know it's easy to hate on him, but I've liked some of what he's done. Not all, but some. And I like him, but that was a huge mistake. And if he was sitting right here, I'd go, that was a terrible decision. I get it. You don't want him to go after your family. But, like, there are things bigger than you, right?

Second, there was a preacher that gave, like, a little thing at the. At the inauguration. I didn't see it, but I heard it was good. Okay. He gave, like, a rousing, whatever that's fine to make. Do your thing, praise. You know, I'm all for praising God on that stage, but then the moment it was over, my man gets a cell phone out, creates a crypto coin. Shannon.

Just walked off the inauguration. I've created a crypto coin, God, praise God, be the glory, Martin Luther King, and then just creates crypto coin, basically tries to scam everybody.

You had this moment where, like, everyone saw you praising God and you used it to create a scam coin. I'm telling you, the worst thing that has happened to Christianity in the last 15 years is the way it is tied up in politics. That is the worst thing that can happen. God is not a Democrat. God is not a Republican. God doesn't care about human politics. And to tie up that, you have to be this party to believe in God and then to take the stage. I'm fine with people praying at the inauguration. They should. But then to use that to try to make yourself money is shameful. It's shameful.

And then third, the January 6th pardons. Some of them, I'm not like, you know, there were some people that it got wrapped up in that got charged that I, you know, I met a person once, I'm not going to say who, but I met a person who ended up in there, got charged and was like, I didn't even know what was going on. I just followed the group in. I'm sure that happened. But Trump pardoned some people yesterday who hit officers like, they're on video beating officers, and he just pardoned them. How do we accept that there are people right now who, like Trump who will defend that? Why? I'm not going to defend Biden's pardons. We can't just get to the point that we're fighting each other so much, Republican, Democrat, that we will defend things we know are wrong just so the other side will eat it. And that's where we are right now with some people. We so want our side to win that we'll defend behavior we know is wrong and just go, cause it's my side. And then if you say, why did you do that? They'll go, well, what about what your guy did? And I want to be clear, when you start the what abouts, which, by the way, I've done, you're just asking for terrible behavior. Because if I justify everything a Democrat does by what a Republican does, we're going to be in the pits doing terrible things to each other.

So my guy did preemptive pardons that I think are shameful. But the other guy pardoned people who beat up officers just cause I remember when that happened, people told me that they were antifa. Well, then I guess he pardoned antifa. But either way, like yesterday, to me, the behavior that everyone is accepting really depresses me. And that's the last I'll say about it. We'll get to stuff that's much more fun after this on hour number two.
