Matt Jones
Welcome everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio Tuesday, January 1st. I met Jones here at the KS Bar and Grill where we didn't think we'd be here today, but we are. So you can come out and join us, have a little lunch. Give us a shot on the Clark's pump and shop phone. Actually, you know what? No. Clark's pumping shop phone up line. Shannon, we're going to go. We're just talk for a while. We might do the phones a little later. Okay.
Shannon The Dude
I like that.
Matt Jones
Hey, Vision Auto glass text machine is seven. I would like you to do that. 772-7745254. In this edition sponsored by the TJ Smith Law Office, you call T.J.O. make them pay. By the way, I've been giving out the a Vision Auto glass text machine on ESPN during my Sundays with Matt Myron.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And so sometimes I get those people and that's really neat because it's not like the normal.
Ryan Lemond
Right.
Matt Jones
So that's cool.
Ryan Lemond
A new avenue for them. They do contact you during your national show.
Matt Jones
Yeah, exactly. And you get random people. So a lot of stuff to talk about. Kentucky played. There's been a lot just going on, like stuff I've done. Inauguration was yesterday, et cetera. So there's a lot going on. I'll start with. Let's just go over the most important thing today. Today's my mom's birthday. Happy birthday to my mom. She probably wouldn't want me to tell the age, but I'm gonna go ahead and do it. She's 71 years old, so. Happy birthday to my mom and looks amazing for 71. You would not think my mom was 71 if you. If you saw her.
Ryan Lemond
I mentioned that to you last night. Both your Larry and Karen, they both. Both look remarkably young for their age.
Matt Jones
Yeah. And I think I look generally young for my age, so I think we've kind of gotten that past gene pool, that gene pool pretty, Pretty well. But mom's 71, so, you know, I would say say happy birthday to her, but she's not reachable by social media, by anyone. So you can just do it at your home and wave.
Ryan Lemond
I hope Larry takes her out to. What would think they'll go tonight? McDonald's Cracker Barrel.
Matt Jones
The McDonald's birthday. You know, in that area. Probably gondolier.
Ryan Lemond
That's the go to.
Matt Jones
Yeah, probably gondolier. I think. I think that'll be the birthday meal. We'll see. But. But 71. So. Happy birthday to Mom. The. The last night. We'll talk about a little later, we did the. We gave away $4,000 from Country Roads Spirits. And what an exciting night, wasn't it? I mean, we'll talk about it later. But when that fun bar was full, people were yelling, and it was energetic and at the end, very tense.
Ryan Lemond
It was packed, and there was a lot of energy in here. And we started the game all the way through the whole first half. But then when it got whittled down.
Matt Jones
It did get really tense. We'll. We'll talk about what happened, but it was. It was tense in here. I loved it. And somebody walked away quite a bit of money. $4,000. So. Yes. Before we get started, though, I want to go up some stuff last Friday. Okay. So you may remember I was going to speak to the Kentucky Young Farmers Association.
Ryan Lemond
That's right.
Matt Jones
And I asked you all, what do you think? You know, I got this cowboy hat. People seem to like the cowboy hat.
Ryan Lemond
Big investment for you.
Matt Jones
Think it looks good?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
So, you know, I'm going the Young Farmers Association.
Ryan Lemond
Perfect time.
Matt Jones
Feels like I should bring out the hat.
Ryan Lemond
I think so, too.
Matt Jones
You, Shannon, you. Drew's gone, by the way. Today you said, shannon, wear the hat.
Shannon The Dude
That hat. Rocket.
Matt Jones
Ryan said, wear the hat.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Drew said, wear the hat. So I said, all right, I'll wear it. Then I got to two or three hours before and I got a little scared.
Ryan Lemond
Oh.
Matt Jones
Because here was my mindset. What? I don't want him to think I'm making fun of.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, no, I did see that.
Matt Jones
I didn't want him to think I was making fun of him. Right. And so I was like, well, maybe don't wear that. And then. And whoever wrote this, this is on you. Somebody wrote the text machine and said, hey, I'm part of the young farmers Association. I can't be there tonight. But don't worry. If you want to wear the hat, there'll be a bunch of people in hats. And I went, all right. Then I took a shower, and I need a haircut. Like, I got to get. I'm getting a haircut tomorrow. So my hair was kind of. It's too long right now. Now. And because I don't have as much hair on top as I used to, it, like, when it grows on the sides, it grows quicker than the top, and that doesn't look good. Yeah, so the hair didn't look great. So I was like, all right, Shannon, wear that. Yeah, right?
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, go for it.
Matt Jones
So put the hat on. Ready to go? I'm like, I'm. I'm. I'm. The key is own it. You know what I mean? The key is own it.
Shannon The Dude
Confidence.
Matt Jones
Confidence. I kind of looked in the mirror. I was like, maybe I'm giving off Shannon. JBL vibes, you know what I mean? Because I had a sports coat on.
Ryan Lemond
You wear your boots?
Matt Jones
Wore my boots. New boots. So I did feel like I looked like a million bucks. Yeah, I did feel like it. And I think I actually did objectively look pretty good. But the moment I walked into the Hilton, saw, I'm gonna be the only person in a cowboy hat.
Ryan Lemond
Nobody.
Matt Jones
One guy.
Ryan Lemond
One guy.
Matt Jones
One guy. There was only one other person in a room of 300 plus people that had a cowboy hat on. So now, luckily, a lot of people in the room are listeners to the show, and they would come up to me and go, glad you wore the cowboy.
Ryan Lemond
Nice, nice.
Matt Jones
And to those people, thank you.
Ryan Lemond
Huh?
Matt Jones
Because I was questioning the decision at.
Ryan Lemond
First because you are 6 4, and you got a cowboy hat on, and.
Matt Jones
Yeah. And probably the only person with, like, a jacket on, you know, they're dressed like they're going farming. Right?
Ryan Lemond
Okay.
Matt Jones
So I owned it. Said, you know what? I'm just a cowboy. I can't help it. They're not as cowboy as me. You know what I mean? Right?
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Matt Jones
So I went with it, got up and spoke. It was a great group. It was very nice. It was. It was cool. People. People came up to me, were great. I think they liked my. My message, which is one about Kentucky and unity and. But I will say, when you're not used to wearing a cowboy hat and it's just you and one other person in a room of 300, it can be a little. Did you know. I mean, you can be a little like, did I make the right decision?
Ryan Lemond
Did you and the other dude have a moment with.
Matt Jones
He. I like this guy. He was from Fulton county, which is, you know.
Ryan Lemond
Oh, yeah.
Matt Jones
Far into the state. He came and sat at my table, I think, Shannon. Because he. We were cowboys.
Ryan Lemond
Brotherly.
Matt Jones
There was a. There was a hat bond.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah. I could see that. You probably didn't have any overalls that you could have worn.
Matt Jones
So this group wasn't wearing overalls. This was young farmers. They were basically trucker hats.
Shannon The Dude
Oh, I got you.
Matt Jones
I can tell the. The current farmer vibe is trucker hat, like bubble vest. Right.
Shannon The Dude
So like, bro country singer almost.
Matt Jones
It is a little bit bro country, Brian. But. But that. But that's. That's what I did. So then that was over. Ryan. I walked over to Manchester City Music hall and went to the music concert for my friend Byron Roberts. You want to talk about good vibes? I mean, this is a guy. People in eastern Kentucky who like music in eastern Kentucky. If you like, like Tyler Childers kind of music, you probably know who Byron Roberts is. He's the one that created that kicking it on the. That I went to. But he's part. If you've been to a concert of somebody that is from eastern Kentucky, he was there.
Ryan Lemond
Okay.
Matt Jones
Right. They did this concert for him at Manchester Music hall when I bought tickets, because, like, I love that guy and he's. He's battling cancer, and I wanted to go support him and. But I didn't know how many people would be there. Place was packed.
Ryan Lemond
Wow. Really?
Matt Jones
All people there to help that guy? All the musicians donated their time.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I mean, you want to talk about good vibes in a place. I mean, you know, imagine what life you've lived, Shannon, where a thousand people would come to honor you, to help you raise money to fight your disease.
Ryan Lemond
Very touching.
Shannon The Dude
We could all.
Matt Jones
That's pretty amazing. I went up to him and gave him a hug, and he was crying. I mean, he just had a line of people. Great music from almost all the artists from this area. Not all of them, but most of them. So it was a great night all the way around.
Ryan Lemond
I'm sure every artist said something nice to him. I'm sure he cried the Whole night.
Matt Jones
He was crying the whole night. Yeah, which I would too.
Ryan Lemond
I would.
Matt Jones
I would too. And a lot of, a lot of listeners to this show. So it was just a good vibes weekend. Then of course we got Saturday and played Alabama scored 97 points which normally Ryan, you think would be enough.
Ryan Lemond
97 at home, that's a win.
Matt Jones
You think that's when. But Alabama also good and they also scored a lot of points and they scored 102 and we lost. What were your thoughts on the game really?
Ryan Lemond
First of all, a really fun game to watch. I mean it was really entertaining. That was two really good teams playing at a really high level. But you know, going into the season we all thought Alabama was going to be the team to beat in the sec. They returned a lot of guys from their Final four team. They haven't played that way. But then we saw Saturday how good Alabama can really be. That's a really, really good team. But I really, I thought Kentucky played really, really well.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I thought Kentucky played really well on offense. Yeah. I told you in the game who I was worried about and that was Grant Nelson. And in the first half he, he.
Ryan Lemond
Was little Braun in the first half.
Matt Jones
If he, if he's not there, we, I think we win the game because we get a lead in the first half we probably keep. But we didn't because he, we couldn't stop him. And in the second half, Sears, I mean they basically, you know, J. Billis, you always says if two teams are pretty even, give me the team with the two. If two best players. They had the two best players. I mean Grant Sears and Nelson are probably better than anybody we have. I think our next five are probably better than some of the guys they have. But like they got the top two guys. They both performed and they won. And when I watched at the end, I didn't feel like bad about it, but I just felt like, look, they were better, you know, that doesn't mean if we played them again they won't be better or that we wouldn't be better. But they were better and we were not able to guard them at all. And I heard Rob Doster on the field of 68 say. And I think he's, I think he's right about this. Kentucky plays a way to where we, our defense is not good. So when we play a good team, like we don't have a margin for error. You know what I mean? We have to be good the whole game because if we're not good for the whole game against a Good team. We're going to lose. So perfect scenario to me is game's tied at 81, we've gotten to the point where we're equal to them and then we have a run of three, two minutes that we screw up and then where it's over right there. Yeah, the run where Butler misses the pass, Amari blocks a shot, they get the own rebound, kick it out for three, we come down, Almondor misses the three, Butler makes kind of a weird shot. Like we had a two minute stretch that lost us the game because our margin for error is so small, because our defense is not good.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, the, our lack of defense at times allows other teams to go on big runs too.
Matt Jones
Like 8, 4 runs that were 9, 0 or more. See, it's gonna be. You're just not gonna win a lot of games where you get 4, 90 runs. Right? Who was it we played the other night and had 3, 100 runs? Well, you're, we're gonna win when that happens. Most of the time they had 4, 90 runs. And you know, I've said all year, I don't think our defense, like, I don't expect it to get a lot better. I still don't expect it to get a lot better. I think it's gotten a little better. But we had no answer for Grant Nelson. Yeah, we had no answer for Grant Nelson. Carr can't guard him. And then if you listen after the game, I actually thought that, that the analysis Nate Oates gave of the game. I really like Mark Pope and Nate Oates because they tell you what they did. You know what I mean? Nate Oates said, we decided that there were certain people on Kentucky that were seals. Now, he didn't call them out, but he's talking about Travis Perry, Kobe Braya and to some extent Jackson Robinson. But really Perry and Brea. And he said, we saw seals on the court and when we did, we were going to make sure to get our whales. He was talking about Sears, Nelson and then the other guy, I can't remember, get our whales on their seals. And he would run action and there was somebody online who broke this down. They would run action to where their whales got one on one with our seals and they ate.
Ryan Lemond
Took it right at him and took.
Matt Jones
It right at him.
Ryan Lemond
Yep.
Matt Jones
And I think he's mostly talking about Perry, Bray and maybe Carr. There were one or two plays with Robinson, but really I think he was talking about Perry and Brea and he was like, we were going to take them.
Ryan Lemond
They did too.
Matt Jones
And he said Our whales take their seals. And I thought, you know what, I don't think that's disrespectful. He's just being honest about what they did.
Ryan Lemond
I think probably Car is somebody he's also talking about because every time Nelson got one on one with Car, he was going right to the basket.
Matt Jones
They really abused Travis. Yeah, I don't blame him, but I mean, like, what's he going to do, right? He's just not. Sears is better than him. And then they would switch Nelson took him a couple. He's got no chance with that. Same with Bray. I mean, they just can't. These can't guard those guys. And so it was very smart. They, they went looking for their matchup. They kept moving the ball around till they got their matchup and then once they got their matchup, they, that guy either scored or he found an open shooter and that was that.
Ryan Lemond
I want to ask you this because the guy sent me some stats saying, well, maybe one reason our defense is numbers are so bad. We've played the best offensive teams in the country.
Matt Jones
I think that's certainly part of it, for sure. No doubt. But that's who we're going to play.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And we still got more coming. We still got some more coming. We still got Auburn coming.
Ryan Lemond
Alabama again, Alabama again.
Matt Jones
So, you know, that's just how it is. But I still thought it was a good game. I'm not down about the game. I thought we could lose. We beat what A and M before and so I don't think it made as big a difference. Yeah, but they're better than us and that's the way it is.
Ryan Lemond
Does it, does the loss change the way you think about this team even a little bit?
Matt Jones
No.
Ryan Lemond
Me neither.
Matt Jones
No, because I think we are. I think there's four, maybe three elite teams. Probably three. I think Duke, Auburn and Alabama are elite. I had Tennessee, but I don't know now I don't think they can score.
Ryan Lemond
Andy Shannon's vandy knocked him off.
Matt Jones
So I kind of think Tennessee's now in a second tier group that includes us, Marquette, Iowa State, probably some other teams I can't think of right this minute. Michigan State and those two two tier teams can beat a one tier team, but you better play perfect. Yeah, and we didn't play Perfect.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
8, 5, 9, 2. Well, no, not yet. We're not gonna open. I got a lot more to talk about. We'll talk more about the whales and the seals then Pope, I thought, had something fascinating to say last night, which I want to bring up and then all the other events of a weekend. There were a lot of things going on. This is ksr.

Matt Jones
I mean, after yesterday, I don't know that we had needed to play Kid Rock.
Shannon The Dude
Well, you don't like Kid Rock.
Matt Jones
I mean, he's fine. Like I tell you. You know my view. I'm not going. I'm not going to not like singers because they're political views. Like the people mad at Carrie Underwood. Get over it. Like, she's allowed to do that. I got no problem with that. Kid Rock, I think, is a gooberry. But I'm not gonna act like I don't like this song.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Matt Jones
You know, I mean, if this song plays. Or Bob with the.
Ryan Lemond
Bob.
Matt Jones
Right. Or the song he sang with Cheryl Crowe. Those are still bangers.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, absolutely. He's coming into the Yum Center. He's coming into. Yeah, I won't go into.
Matt Jones
I. I won't go to that. No.
Shannon The Dude
Ashland's got Mark Chestnut coming.
Matt Jones
I would consider. Because it. Yeah, any coming with some other, like Junior, Tracy, Lawrence. So that's one I would consider if I get Mark Chestnut, Tracy Lawrence and Hank. Oh, it's got.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Oh, two dozen roses.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And it'll change my mind.
Shannon The Dude
Let's go.
Matt Jones
You just changed my mind right there.
Shannon The Dude
Two dozen roses.
Matt Jones
It didn't even take two dozen roses. No. So I would go to that. When is that. That sounds like a good group.
Shannon The Dude
That's coming up. I think maybe in the summer.
Matt Jones
Okay. Yeah, that's one now. That's one. I could see myself going to a Kid Rock by himself. I probably wouldn't.
Ryan Lemond
We've been to a Kid Rock concert.
Matt Jones
Yeah. At the Republican governor's convention and Matt Bevin was. Matt Bevin stood by himself wearing a denim on denim outfit, banging his head, looking as awkward as a person could look. And you remember who we head banged with during that song?
Ryan Lemond
The Florida governor, Rick Scott.
Matt Jones
No, no. First of all, he's not the Florida governor and he wasn't even there. Scott Walker. Scott Walker, Wisconsin.
Ryan Lemond
Not Rick Scott. Scott Walker.
Matt Jones
Got it. One person says, Matt, my sister was at that speech. She said you look great. And the speech was great. But no, you did not fit into the. To the fashion. Well, that's probably fair. I tried though, because how many times you can get to wear.
Ryan Lemond
That's what I was getting ready to say.
Matt Jones
When am I going to wear that?
Ryan Lemond
You got to pick and choose when to wear it.
Matt Jones
That was the right time. When's the. When's the rodeo here? Right. And I. In only a certain kind of concert, like you wouldn't wear that to Tyler. It'd have to be the kind of concert that I don't even go to.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Like Luke Combs.
Ryan Lemond
So at the. At the concert, Manchester Music Hall. There are a lot of cowboy hats there. You were the only one there.
Matt Jones
Yeah, but that kind of country, they don't do that. I knew there'd be no cowboy hats.
Ryan Lemond
Okay.
Matt Jones
Yeah, no, that's the real Appalachian country. Is not a cowboy hat country. Right. Morgan Wallen's cowboy hat country. Now, I know that seems weird, but that's just George Strait.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, for sure.
Matt Jones
Is. Is.
Shannon The Dude
I just looked up that. So Sammy Kershaw is going to be there.
Matt Jones
To Sam and Sammy Kershaw.
Shannon The Dude
We to go, dude.
Matt Jones
Let's go.
Shannon The Dude
This is July 11 and 12.
Matt Jones
Yeah, we're going. Me and you will go. When you want to go.
Shannon The Dude
Let's do it.
Matt Jones
We'll go. I think that sounds like a fun show, bro.
Ryan Lemond
Date.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Shannon The Dude
I mean, Headhunters, Dina Carter.
Matt Jones
If they hadn't put Kid Rock on there. That's my lineup. That's literally like. Like you couldn't have. Like, that's my line.
Shannon The Dude
There's more. Afro Man's gonna be there.
Matt Jones
No, Afroman is not there.
Shannon The Dude
Yes, he is.
Matt Jones
Well, he's gonna just sing because I got high and get off stage. Right. He's not gonn else.
Shannon The Dude
And the Yin Yang Twins. That is quite a mix. Mark Chest. Not an Afroman.
Matt Jones
Why are the Yin Yang Twins there?
Shannon The Dude
Why not? Let's go.
Matt Jones
Let's do it. Wow. That Is quite a lineup there. They're going, well, no, I keep wanting to do that. That's not what I. All right, so back to the thing. Pope says last night on his radio show that they have spent the weekend studying the officiating from their first five games.
Ryan Lemond
Yes.
Matt Jones
They said, we have realized that there is something we can do to draw more fouls. And then they asked him, what is that? And he said, I ain't saying. Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
He didn't want to tip everybody off.
Matt Jones
So what do you think it is?
Ryan Lemond
I don't know.
Matt Jones
I know.
Ryan Lemond
Oh, you do know.
Matt Jones
Yeah. He's gonna tell him to fall down. No, he's gonna. And he's right. He's gonna tell him. When they shoot threes and a guy lands in their landing area, fall down. When you go up for a shot and you're getting into contact on layups, fall down. That's.
Ryan Lemond
I.
Matt Jones
Let's. Let's watch the next game.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Shannon, I guarantee you our guys fall down more, which they should.
Shannon The Dude
Yep. I'll tell you what Vandy does, too. They just steamroll guys. They just run guys over. They get the call, though.
Matt Jones
Yes. I'm not. It's not flopping, although there are guys out there that flop. But if the difference is between you falling down and not falling down, if you got hit, you got to fall down. You know, I remember Cal would teach his guys to scream. No. When they would go up. They go. I think you. I think you got to teach him the fault. Ansley Almanor, he had a dude in that landing circle thing where you shoot a three. There was a guy in his landing circle, but he didn't fall down. And I think if he fall down, he'd gotten a call.
Ryan Lemond
So you think, like, they've. Well, I can use Mark Pope's word. I collect the data and look like there's probably some fouls we could have gotten if we had fallen down.
Matt Jones
Mark Pope's team at BYU was 275th in the country in fouls drawn. Okay. I don't know where we are, but we're at least in the sec, not as good at it.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I think that part of it is because the way he plays, you shoot a lot of jump shots. But part of it is you might have to adjust. And when these games get called physically, you have to take advantage and get some free throws on your own.
Ryan Lemond
You know, you look just. Yeah. The amount of free throws shot, our opponent has been shooting much more free throws than we've been shooting in SEC play.
Matt Jones
Yes. So do you like the idea of Shannon, if I'm correct and it is fall down? Do you like that?
Shannon The Dude
Whatever is going to get them to the free throw line more often? Yeah, go for it. I mean, other teams are going to do it.
Matt Jones
I agree.
Shannon The Dude
You got to play that game.
Matt Jones
You can sit there and whine about the way it's called all you want, but if it's going to be called.
Ryan Lemond
Like that, you got to take advantage of it.
Matt Jones
You got to play to that, right?
Ryan Lemond
Yep. You know, I think Ortega may be the only guy that really, I think, you know, take.
Matt Jones
Falls down.
Ryan Lemond
Takes the contact and falls down, trying to think. I don't remember any of our big.
Matt Jones
We've talked a lot about this. Most of our guys fade away on those layups. Butler does it, Robinson does it. Amare does it. Car. Car usually doesn't try to shoot over people, but to the extent he does, does. The only person that takes it is always. And I don't know, somebody could see. I bet he leads our team in free throw Shit.
Ryan Lemond
Oh, I bet he does too, you know. Yeah, I bet he does.
Matt Jones
It's either him or Amari that probably draw the most fouls. Yeah, I do feel like Amari gets a bad whistle. Amari gets that Shaq whistle where it's hard for him.
Ryan Lemond
Well, he's. He's learning how to play in the physical SEC every game out.
Matt Jones
He is. But I don't know what it was he told him, but he told him something, and I think he probably told him to fall down. We'll take a break. Be right back. You can guess what the next one is. T.J. smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. he'll make him pay.
Shannon The Dude
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio, presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
So what is the name of this song?
Shannon The Dude
Apparently me more cowboy than you. Here it is, the Broody Brothers.
Matt Jones
So apparently this has gone viral on Tick Tock. Me more cowboy than you.
Ryan Lemond
What you were thinking when you walked into that?
Matt Jones
I wasn't thinking. I just thought, you know, that I look. That, you know, I looked good. That was really.
Ryan Lemond
You look more cowboy than you.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean, you just. You just look at, you know. But if I were to go to, like, New York and wear it, I'm more cowboy than they are.
Shannon The Dude
Yes, you could be the cowboy. You could put him out of a job.
Matt Jones
That's right. But if you're in Texas, then. No, I would not be.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Also, people are starting to wear because that show Landman, which you like a lot, right.
Ryan Lemond
I Just finished it. It's very, very good.
Matt Jones
You really like that?
Ryan Lemond
Billy Bob Thornton is really good in this move in this series. Really good.
Matt Jones
By the way, we're 251st in fouls.
Ryan Lemond
Drawn per game and that kind of piggybacks what you said, what his teams were at byu.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So you got, I mean that's. Now there's a negative to falling down. You don't get the call. It's hard to get back on defense.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, yeah, right.
Matt Jones
It also might mess with the rhythm of your shooting.
Ryan Lemond
Sure.
Matt Jones
See, I guess you probably do have to balance that. Right.
Ryan Lemond
It'll be curious to see this next game now that we know potentially what the, the secret is. How many times against Vandy they, they fall down after they take, you know.
Matt Jones
Vandy game looks harder. They want beat Tennessee on the road and we're up the whole game. I mean they were. That was a pretty thorough beating of Tennessee.
Shannon The Dude
At one point they were up by 16 and could have run them out of the gym. Could have run tight down the stretch with Tennessee, but they.
Matt Jones
So, I mean that Vandy game is not a gimme. No, but not yet.
Ryan Lemond
Tennessee looks a little more vulnerable. You know, they had what, 46 points against Florida. They had trouble scoring against Vandy. So maybe they're not as strong as we thought they were.
Matt Jones
One person writes, matt, you shouldn't let callers call in because you talk all the time. The show would be better if you talked less. Well, I mean, good luck, man.
Shannon The Dude
Listen to Paul Fine Bomb. If you like a saying.
Matt Jones
If you, if you're waiting for me to talk less, it's probably gonna be a negative, probably gonna be a negative experience for you.
Ryan Lemond
I think the, the ratings back up your formula on how to do this show, so I think we're okay.
Matt Jones
By the way, you didn't tell me Nickelback was at that concert too.
Shannon The Dude
I didn't know that you cared so much about Nickelback. I like The Hank Williams Jr. Did.
Matt Jones
I see him photograph? Yeah, you did say him.
Ryan Lemond
I've been to Nickelback concert before.
Matt Jones
I bet you have. That doesn't surprise me. By the way, my mom's going to, to Knoxville for, for, for.
Ryan Lemond
So, so Larry's taking her to Knoxville.
Matt Jones
So it's gonna be fancy. All the nice restaurants in Knoxville. Be ready at 4:30. There's a couple that's gonna be walking in, I bet.
Ryan Lemond
Do they think they're going to Olive Garden or they're gonna.
Matt Jones
Oh, no, no, they'll do better than that. I know where they're probably Going. I'm not gonna say it, but I just kind of. I think I know where they're going. Okay. All right, we gotta talk a second about cal Perry. Oh, and five.
Ryan Lemond
Oh, and five.
Matt Jones
Zero, five. Blown out.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Down 18 to 2 at one point. Feels like you also have hit a tipping point of the national media going, yeah, this might be it.
Ryan Lemond
It seemed like everybody wrote an anti cow story this weekend.
Matt Jones
Everybody.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
The biggest one to me is Goodman, who, granted, is dancing right now.
Ryan Lemond
Sure.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Ryan Lemond
Not a Cal supporter.
Matt Jones
Not a Cal supporter. He's dancing. He anonymously quoted SEC coaches that basically said, he's cooked. It's over. The offense is ancient. It's over. He bet they basically said, bye, Shannon. I'll tell you what I know about Cash. Yeah, he'll know. Those articles got written. He'll know. Goodman said that if they can't flip it now, it ain't happening. The competitive juice that he has, he wants to be doubted. If it doesn't happen now, Shannon, it ain't happening. With Jeff Goodman dancing on his grave. If he can't flip that, then it's not happening because there's nothing that will motivate him more. Nothing in the world could motivate John Caliperi more than Jeff Goodman writing a negative piece about it. I know him.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I know how much he dislikes Jeff Goodman. You think he dislikes me? He dislikes him more. Nothing could get him more motivated. If that doesn't do it, Shannon, it ain't happening.
Shannon The Dude
We've talked about how he's at his best when he has an opposite, you know, a person that's been critical of him or somebody, he doesn't like it. For years, it was Patino, Kevin Stallings, I guess maybe you. For the last couple of years, you know, he has to have somebody that's an enemy, and that's when he's at his best. So we'll see if he can turn this thing around.
Matt Jones
When I would say to you, in terms of. If you were to rank the people that drive Cal the craziest, number one is Jeff Goodman. Probably Pat forties, number two, but number one is Jeff Goodman. And so when I saw that article, I thought, who do they play next? They play Georgia at home. If they can't win that game, Ryan, it's over. Because he will be as motivated to win that game as he was the national championship in 2012. He will.
Ryan Lemond
Georgia's who they play tonight.
Matt Jones
It's either tonight or tomorrow.
Ryan Lemond
I know.
Matt Jones
It's. It's. They play them in tonight or.
Ryan Lemond
Okay, I think I saw Alabama's coming up too. They're in danger of going on.
Matt Jones
They play. They play Georgia and then on Saturday or whatever, they play someone they can beat. I can't remember.
Shannon The Dude
Oklahoma.
Matt Jones
Oklahoma. And then, of course, they play us. I think they have a buy. And then they play us.
Ryan Lemond
He's in danger of also losing his locker room. I mean. Oh, and five getting blown out. You did, you know, there. He's treading some very desperate waters, I think coming up over there.
Matt Jones
I mean, they were down 18 to 2.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. It's like the guys that, you know.
Matt Jones
Boogie Flam may be out, by the way.
Ryan Lemond
That's right. I heard his hand. Right.
Matt Jones
Boogie Flanders hurt his hand and they said maybe out for a few games, so he might miss our game.
Ryan Lemond
Dude. And he is like their main offensive threat. He's like him and do are their only offensive threats at most. In most games. And we, you know, we said this.
Matt Jones
Before about where you wore a blue jacket.
Ryan Lemond
He did wear a blue jacket.
Matt Jones
What do you think about that?
Ryan Lemond
I gotta admit, I kind of liked him wearing a blue jacket.
Matt Jones
Okay, so we talked about this a couple weeks ago. Is there any part of you that feels sorry for him? Because I'm starting to sense if our fan base. I think almost nobody felt sorry for it. And I'm starting to hear some people kind of feeling sorry for him. Kind of. Even the. I've talked to one person that was one of the most anti cow people I knew, and he was like, well, it's kind of sad it's ending like this. Are you, Are you in that train yet?
Ryan Lemond
I was in that train. When you asked this question last time, I said, I'm starting to feel a little sorry for the guy. Here is a Hall of Fame coach, one of the best college coaches in the history of the game. And his legacy is about to be tarnished because they're awful right now at Arkansas.
Shannon The Dude
No, you guys, you guys feel sorry for him. I think it's hilarious. I'm laughing every time I see the score. And they're down by 20 points. I think it's great. I mean, some of these quotes too. I mean, these coaches are laying into them, basically saying that I, I. Here's the quote.
Matt Jones
Read one of those quotes.
Shannon The Dude
Here's the quote. There's just no fear. Now when I see him on the other sideline.
Matt Jones
No fear.
Shannon The Dude
There's another quote that says, I don't think Caliperi and his staff can adapt. None of their pieces fit. None of them. These Are the quotes.
Matt Jones
I saw an Arkansas. Let me tell you how deep the Arkansas media is into this. I saw an Arkansas. Like, for whatever reason on my algorithm, there's like three or four things that are popping, and one of them is Arkansas basketball shows and stuff. And one of them that pops up there was these two guys from Arkansas and they said they had researched and they pointed out John Roebuck and Dwayne Peavey not being with him as part of the problem. They had gone that far into the hole to know Robick, by the way. They're right.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
But clearly they must have researched a lot to get maybe from this show to get to that point to realize that those were the things.
Ryan Lemond
I think we've. You know, you've pointed it out for years. You can point to that moment in his career when things kind of started going south.
Matt Jones
One of the guys on the show goes, they wanted to not blame Cal. They said he's got the worst staff in the country. I just want to say, not trying to be rude, but he might have the worst staff in the country. I don't know that he has a staff that works less hard. Do you think there's a staff that does game planning worse than his?
Ryan Lemond
If there is, I don't know of them. You got guys in your staff that didn't even log in one time to your equipment here in Lexington when trying to, you know, help help your players out. He didn't even log into it one time during the season.
Shannon The Dude
Even heard Willie when he was on say he's just complacent.
Matt Jones
See, I thought that was really important.
Ryan Lemond
It was.
Matt Jones
I mean, here's why I thought that what Willie said was important is Willie's not trying to crush it. Right. Willie likes him. Right. Willie credits him for helping him turn his life.
Ryan Lemond
He developed, helped develop Willie.
Matt Jones
Right. So. So Willie is someone that's a fan of his. And when a fan of your says he kind of got soft and complacent resonate. How you not gonna listen to that?
Ryan Lemond
Yep. You know, I think. I think I'll probably. If you poll a lot, all of his former players, they would all probably agree with what Willie said.
Matt Jones
I bet they would, too. Willie might be the only one that would say it, but they probably agree with. Start the new year in a brand new home from bluegrass home center. Don't wait. Welcome back, Techie Sports Radio. All right, like I said, you don't get that complaint here. If you don't want to hear this part, just come back at 11:00.
Ryan Lemond
Sure.
Matt Jones
We got to talk about yesterday. First of all, to me, winner of the day, Carrie Underwood. They get up there, she's gonna sing for inauguration music doesn't work, just goes, I got it. No music.
Ryan Lemond
Yep.
Matt Jones
And sings.
Ryan Lemond
That's a professional crushes. Yep.
Matt Jones
Let me just say I didn't watch any of the ceremony. But you know, Shannon, I see what comes up on Twitter and TikTok, etc. Yeah, I saw her mouth and I got it. Can you imagine knowing the world's watching you? Shannon just going, I got it.
Shannon The Dude
She was amazing. And then everybody kind of amazed. Everybody kind of started Singing along with her. It was really cool moment.
Matt Jones
That is. That. That's the. What that was, for me, the highlight of what I saw yesterday. Like I said, I didn't see speeches and stuff. I saw Melania's hat. And your joke was funny. Shannon said, there's Carmen San Diego or whatever.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, she did look like.
Matt Jones
Yeah, that was kind of look. But Melania, you know, she does her thing. Whatever. Baron is 10ft tall. Yes.
Ryan Lemond
He's a big man.
Matt Jones
When did he get so tall?
Ryan Lemond
Is he like 6, 7, 6, 8?
Matt Jones
I mean, I don't know. And I think because he's so skinny, it makes it even, like, more.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I love the video of George W. Bush with his. Did you see the video where it looks like he's, like, looking around like a little child or a puppy? Did you see that video, Shannon? There's a video. People are using it as a meme. They're like, when the edible kicks in and you're with your parents or whatever. But, like, you need to see George Bush is just looking around.
Ryan Lemond
Like, I remember this place.
Shannon The Dude
I'm watching it right now.
Matt Jones
I'm gonna go ahead and tell you, there are no two big losers, bigger losers in the world than Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
How did we get to where those people are sitting on the front? Front row. Front row. Those are the two biggest losers that I've ever seen. Now, Jeff Bezos was also on the front row. Did you see what his wife was wearing?
Ryan Lemond
You told me, and I'm gonna Google it.
Matt Jones
Looks to me, Shannon, like she wore bra, only with jacket.
Shannon The Dude
I don't know how I missed that.
Matt Jones
There was an episode of Seinfeld about a woman that did this once. That's what it looked like to me. And there's another meme of Mark Zuckerberg looking at her. Have you seen that one?
Ryan Lemond
No.
Matt Jones
You need to see that one. Zuckerberg snuck a peek and then he, like, smiled like a little child. That's kind of strange. So I didn't. I did not watch any of it. I intentionally didn't watch any of it. But I'm just going to tell you, yesterday made me sad. Not because Trump's president. I've long accepted that that's fine. But there were three things that happened back to back, Ryan, that make me sad.
Ryan Lemond
Okay.
Matt Jones
I'm not mad. I think a lot of Trump people want liberals to be mad. That's. That's why they go, you cry lib. You know, like they. They want you to be mad. I'M not mad. I was mad the first 2016. During that time, I'd get mad. I'm not mad anymore. Like, the thing about it is, people know who Trump is. They wanted him, right? They voted for him. They wanted him. So we're gonna get what people wanted. I get it. Three things made me sad, and it's going to be three different things, only one of which has to do with Trump. First thing that made me sad, Joe Biden pardoning his family. Yeah, I understand why he pardoned his son. I don't necessarily agree with it, but I get it. Plus, he had been charged with the crime. But pardoning his family preemptively is bad. First of all, there are a lot of people now who will think they did something, whether they did or not. I understand. People go, why they pardon him if he didn't do anything? You know, he pardoned his sister, who's like 80 years old. What could she have even done? She's like. But either way, a preemptive pardon is bad because it's gonna. Like, it'll. Now, Trump will do that with his kids. Right? He'll do that with his family. And you're basically telling future presidents, you can do this. And then when your president, their family, your family will know they can do.
Ryan Lemond
Whatever they want because they're going to get pardoned.
Matt Jones
Because they're going to get pardoned at the end, pre. I don't know, maybe somebody can tell me, I don't know, that there have been preemptive pardons ever in American history. Maybe there have, but I don't know of it. That's a terrible precedent. So when I saw that Joe Biden did that, I was very disappointed because a lot of. You know, I know it's easy to hate on him, but I've liked some of what he's done. Not all, but some. And I like him, but that was a huge mistake. And if he was sitting right here, I'd go, that was a terrible decision. I get it. You don't want him to go after your family. But, like, there are things bigger than you, right?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Second, there was a preacher that gave, like, a little thing at the. At the inauguration. I didn't see it, but I heard it was good. Okay. He gave, like, a rousing, whatever that's fine to make. Do your thing, praise. You know, I'm all for praising God on that stage, but then the moment it was over, my man gets a cell phone out, creates a crypto coin. Shannon.
Shannon The Dude
What?
Matt Jones
Yes.
Shannon The Dude
I didn't see this Creates says, I.
Matt Jones
Just walked off the inauguration. I've created a crypto coin, God, praise God, be the glory, Martin Luther King, and then just creates crypto coin, basically tries to scam everybody.
Shannon The Dude
Good grief.
Matt Jones
Is that where we are now? That preachers are gonna create scam coins?
Ryan Lemond
Like, that's awful.
Matt Jones
That's awful.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
You had this moment where, like, everyone saw you praising God and you used it to create a scam coin. I'm telling you, the worst thing that has happened to Christianity in the last 15 years is the way it is tied up in politics. That is the worst thing that can happen. God is not a Democrat. God is not a Republican. God doesn't care about human politics. And to tie up that, you have to be this party to believe in God and then to take the stage. I'm fine with people praying at the inauguration. They should. But then to use that to try to make yourself money is shameful. It's shameful.
Ryan Lemond
Try to hawk a product, it's shameful.
Matt Jones
And then third, the January 6th pardons. Some of them, I'm not like, you know, there were some people that it got wrapped up in that got charged that I, you know, I met a person once, I'm not going to say who, but I met a person who ended up in there, got charged and was like, I didn't even know what was going on. I just followed the group in. I'm sure that happened. But Trump pardoned some people yesterday who hit officers like, they're on video beating officers, and he just pardoned them. How do we accept that there are people right now who, like Trump who will defend that? Why? I'm not going to defend Biden's pardons. We can't just get to the point that we're fighting each other so much, Republican, Democrat, that we will defend things we know are wrong just so the other side will eat it. And that's where we are right now with some people. We so want our side to win that we'll defend behavior we know is wrong and just go, cause it's my side. And then if you say, why did you do that? They'll go, well, what about what your guy did? And I want to be clear, when you start the what abouts, which, by the way, I've done, you're just asking for terrible behavior. Because if I justify everything a Democrat does by what a Republican does, we're going to be in the pits doing terrible things to each other.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
You know.
Ryan Lemond
Yep.
Matt Jones
So my guy did preemptive pardons that I think are shameful. But the other guy pardoned people who beat up officers just cause I remember when that happened, people told me that they were antifa. Well, then I guess he pardoned antifa. But either way, like yesterday, to me, the behavior that everyone is accepting really depresses me. And that's the last I'll say about it. We'll get to stuff that's much more fun after this on hour number two.
