All right, Good morning, ladies, gentlemen, boys and girls, grandpa's grandmas, aunts and uncles, everybody who's listening today kind of got a makeshift day today. We'll get into it and tell you what's going on. But it is Thursday, January 30th. We are live at KS Bar and Grill. Ryan Lemon, Drew Franklin, Shannon the dude, as always. Kentucky Sports Radio sponsored by the TJ Smith law office. Call tj. What happened? Shannon?
Shannon the Dude
He'll make them pay.
Drew Franklin
He'll make them pay. You may need to call TJ after what happened to you last night. We'll have our tweet of the day or call of the day, our song of the day we get. We will have a lot of. A lot of stuff. We're kind of going to just pull out because we got a call this morning, but we got a text message this morning. Our beloved big toe. A little under the weather this morning. Drew. Yeah, he's back in Kentucky, but he's a little under weather this morning.
Ryan Lemon
First off, we hope he gets to feeling better.
Drew Franklin
Absolutely.
Ryan Lemon
I mean, for him to take the show off, you know, he must be hurting pretty bad. Whatever's keeping him down. But yeah, I mean, if anyone heard the pregame show the other day, we had a little wrinkle and had to take over and we ended up winning a basketball game. So we'll do it again today and we'll fill in these two hours, put together a good show.
Drew Franklin
So we hope young Matthew is Feeling better because we need him this weekend with the show. We've got tomorrow at Whiskey Thief in Nulu. That's tomorrow's show. And then of course the game on Saturday that we're gonna talk a lot about as well. I know Matt always does a weather report in the morning when he opens the show. We're supposed to get dumped with like buckets of rain today. Like buckets. Like it is supposed to just have a deluge I think of rain today. Did you know that?
Ryan Lemon
I didn't but I'll give you my weather report.
Drew Franklin
All right.
Ryan Lemon
I'm happy to see my yard again. It finally Yesterday at about 3:30 is when the last pile of snow disappeared. So I'm glad we're just past all that. I'd rather not have rain but the snow lasted a little too long around here.
Drew Franklin
See I still got a ton of snow in my yard because the way it sits it blocks the sun and it's, it's always in the shade like most of the day. So I still got a ton of snow. So. All right, so listen, we're gonna make this an ask Anything Thursday. We need your help today since we're kind of without our big toe. We got some topics lined up for you but we have to start. Matt always starts also with a little story. You know he likes to share a story before we get into the topics of the day. Shan, you know what he does?
Shannon the Dude
Oh yeah, I know. I mean I've been on this show for 14 years now. I think I know the format.
Drew Franklin
Cranky Shannon's here and we'll get to the reason why. That's part of it.
Ryan Lemon
So how the Reds do yesterday?
Drew Franklin
The Reds, they did sign funny.
Ryan Lemon
That's right.
Drew Franklin
They signed Taylor Rogers, former UK baseball player. The Reds signed him yesterday.
Ryan Lemon
I was kidding. But then we actually had Reds that one.
Drew Franklin
I remember seeing that Taylor Rogers, a guy I think when he left uk I think had a losing record, a high era and now he's been in the big leagues for like 12 years. Because this goes to show you left handed pitcher, you can get people out, man, they're going to find a spot for you.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, and I saw looking at some, you know, I'm a big major league baseball guy. I'm always sure the news. I saw a Kentucky prospect, Waldy from last year's team. He was listed at the Athletics like among the players to watch. Now they listed a lot of players. He was number 62. That's still exciting for Waldy going up to the big leagues on the List? Yeah, I wasn't on the list. Were you on the list?
Drew Franklin
I was definitely not on the list.
Ryan Lemon
Good for him too. Looking forward to seeing him get started.
Drew Franklin
So we're gonna let you. Do you start the storytelling today. You tell your story first. It's a good one.
Ryan Lemon
I had an awesome Wednesday night. I. My dad now, we didn't really talk Tuesday night. Everyone that knows my dynamic there, he loves the Tennessee Vols. I hate the Tennessee Vols. We took Tuesday off as a family. Said, I'll talk to you tomorrow. So we decided to go watch Transy last night, come together and watch basketball as a father and son and not think about what happened the night before, although I reminded him often. So we went and watched Transy vs Berea at Trancy at Transy at the Clive Beck Center. I haven't been there in many years. It's still a beautiful place. I walked right in. First person I see is Don Lane wearing an old school Transy sweatshirt. Just like. I assume he's always there at every game.
Drew Franklin
Probably wears the same sweatshirt every game.
Ryan Lemon
Yes. I love seeing him there. You know, it's a family atmosphere with the lanes, but the game was what I want to talk about. It was incredible. And first of all, people should go to transit games. They're a lot of fun. But this one in particular, I'm a little. I'm not positive on my stats here, but people were telling me Berea is new to the Heartland Conference, which is what Transy's in. So this was like a big deal. I knew something was up when they. Both teams took a photo before the game. Someone said that they haven't played in, like 60 years. A Kentucky team against Transy in the conference. Gonna say that? Stats could prove it wrong. Regardless. Been a long time since Brea has been, you know, in this situation. Bria went up huge early. We're considering leaving early. It's pretty bad. Transy comes back, but at the end, it was just back and forth. Brea had a layup to basically win it. They're up three, they get a breakaway. Transy gets a chase down block to stay alive. And then hits a three to tie it.
Drew Franklin
Whoa.
Ryan Lemon
Ends up with the ball again. And Brian Lane draws up the perfect full court play with three seconds on the clock to win. Gets another wide open layup, and Berea comes and gets down a block. So we go to overtime and Transy goes on to win it there. But I had so much fun. And there's a player at Transy that I believe you coached.
Drew Franklin
Hunter Penn Hunter Penn.
Ryan Lemon
I have a new favorite basketball player.
Drew Franklin
I love Hunter Penn. I coached him though, when he was like 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 years old. He was on my baseball team.
Ryan Lemon
You get credit. They honored him 2,000 point.
Drew Franklin
Thousand Point Club.
Ryan Lemon
But I'm telling you, I don't this, I don't mean any disrespect here, but when he is done playing at Transy, the YMCA is around Lex to look out because that dude is coming to get buckets. Old man basketball, he is the ultimate YMCA big man. He and friend of the program Ian Reeser had big games. But I had to shout out your boy Hunter Penn in a great Transy Bria game in downtown Lexington. I had so much fun.
Drew Franklin
Well, I told you I went earlier when they played Hanover and I'm going for Hunter Senior day. And you looked it up. February 15th, 3:00 plays that night. So we're going to the senior day game on the 15th at 3:00.
Ryan Lemon
Oh yeah. I didn't expect to get as into the game as I did when they hit the three to tie it at the end. I'm standing up, shooting the Jamal Murray bow and ARR at people I don't even know. I mean, I had a blast. So shout out to Transy. I had to make sure I got that on the air today. It's a Hunter pen in research. Nice. Number 20. His name slipped my mind. He had a million threes. But everyone should go watch the Brian Lane show down there.
Drew Franklin
Well, we mentioned the Senior day game on the 15th. They play Mount St. Joseph. That's where I was yesterday with little Josiah. So you talked about your father son experience with your dad? I had a father son experience with my son yesterday. Took him on a college visit and as promised, I got in the gear, put the helmet on, put the jersey on, gotten a couple little photos with him. So I, I, Shannon doesn't like that. Parent needs to keep in their place. But Shannon, come on, man, this doesn't happen very often.
Shannon the Dude
Hold on a minute. Now you're getting it wrong. Like I'm totally fine with you being a part of the pictures. I'm just saying, like, you shouldn't be like dictating where your kid goes to school. That's all I'm saying. I love your pictures with Josiah. I think they're great. You don't look like much of a blocker though. According to that one picture, it looks like you just run right over you.
Drew Franklin
Oh, dude, are you kidding? I've done proper stance. There's no Way he's. I told him that, see, we're lining up and said, you can't get by me. You're not going to get by me. So what are these visits?
Ryan Lemon
Like, are you watching, looking over his shoulder and like, are you really trying to, like watching him to see if he's really into it? Are you yourself just looking around lost and aimlessly, or how. How are you as a dad in these adventures? What kind of role are you playing?
Drew Franklin
It's funny you say that, because I purposely, when we're walking around campus on the sidewalk, I let Josiah walk side by side with the head coach. Coach Hopp. The head coach took him on his tour yesterday. I was behind him about two steps behind him, trying to just listen to the conversation, you know, because Josiah doesn't talk a whole lot, but he was asking questions. So that as a dad, made me really proud that, hey, man, he's. He's growing up, you know, he's actually into this and wants to know, asking some really good questions to the coach.
Ryan Lemon
Well, me knowing Josiah too, I mean, he, you know, he doesn't talk a whole lot. Pretty quiet kids even. I would, you know, just seeing him being out, going like that and showing interest, I can understand.
Shannon the Dude
Ryan, did you go on visits, like when you were, you know, trying to figure out where you wanted to play college baseball?
Drew Franklin
We did go to Kentucky Wesleyan and we went to, I think my mom and dad, and we went to Indiana Central. Of course, it's now iupui. I think now they changed the name of it. It was. It was in Indiana Central at the time.
Shannon the Dude
I just remember that was it. I remember, like, doing like a trip to like, Campbellsville and Lindsay Wilson. And I never knew, like, what to ask the coach. Like, do you have any questions? I'm like, no. You know, it's always, like, awkward. So that's good that he was actually asking questions, you know, leaning on you to do all the talking.
Drew Franklin
Asking questions that I wouldn't think to ask. Like, I heard him ask one time. Like, when did you guys finally doing the. The spread offense?
Ryan Lemon
Oh, look at this.
Shannon the Dude
Wow.
Drew Franklin
You know, how many. How many receivers do you usually play a game?
Ryan Lemon
Okay.
Drew Franklin
You know, things like that.
Ryan Lemon
How's the Nil Bucket? Do you ask that?
Drew Franklin
No, I don't know. Mount St. Joseph has a very deep Nil Bucket.
Ryan Lemon
K Bar can get involved if we need to.
Drew Franklin
It's way up on the west side of Cincinnati, way up on the hill, so it's beautiful out there, you know, sits right on the river. You can look across the river, and there's Kenton county right across the river over there. We got somebody over here from Kenton county today.
Ryan Lemon
Drove down.
Drew Franklin
That's right.
Ryan Lemon
So you might want him to put it out. Do you have any. Feel like we got top three.
Drew Franklin
You ready to announce?
Ryan Lemon
Or any graphics being made or. Like I said, hats on the table.
Drew Franklin
He doesn't talk. And as we're walking to the car, he starts talking like, dad, low key. I got a tough decision now. I don't know. I really like Hanover, but I really like this visit today. So.
Shannon the Dude
Which one does Daddy Ryan like?
Ryan Lemon
These coaches are listening. Yeah.
Drew Franklin
I could not predict right now what he's going to. I seriously don't know.
Ryan Lemon
Give the stock answer. If you're just going to, you know, make it. Let him make his decision. Everyone respect it.
Drew Franklin
It's the kid's decision. You know, there's no I in Lemon. You know, it's. You play it one game at a time.
Ryan Lemon
There's a me. There's backwards a little bit. So we're a little Heartland Conference radio here. We've named more Heartland schools in this first segment than maybe ever in the history of Kansas.
Drew Franklin
Hand over St. Joe. So that's where our Napier is.
Ryan Lemon
My guy. Sorry, it slipped my mind. Colby, he was the leading score, hit the big three. He was a lot of fun to watch.
Drew Franklin
So we told our two stories. If you heard the KSR pre show this morning, Shannon was whining and crying for, like, 15 minutes about what happened to him last night. Shannon, you were like, I didn't get any sleep.
Shannon the Dude
Is that your impersonation of me?
Drew Franklin
That's my impersonation of Shannon.
Shannon the Dude
Yeah. Work on your impersonations. You don't do a good Joe Biden. You don't do a good me. Yeah, you're right.
Drew Franklin
Shannon's here today.
Shannon the Dude
The last 30 hours, I think I've slept about 45 minutes thanks to a really bad decision of mine to accept a role to play an extra in a movie that was filmed in Louisville. And I immediately regretted it when I showed up and realized this is going to go on for a long time. You know, I showed up thinking, all right, this may go on for three, three, four hours. I'll be out of here by midnight. It'll be fun. Get to do a little background acting. No, like, again, like you just said, if you want to hear the full rant, I would highly suggest you go listen to the KSR pre show on podcast later today. But long story short, Ryan, I was there. And midnight comes and Goes, and then it's 1:00am and then it's 2 and then it's 3 and then it's 4:00am until they wrapped this thing. And I'm going, what do I do at this point? I got, I'm normally up at 5:30 in the morning, Ryan. And it's, it's 4:30 right now. So do I go home? Do I sleep in my car? What do I do? I decided to drive all the way back home, laid down for maybe 45 minutes, got right back up and then showed up back here at the radio station. And I am dragging my butt right now like I am. I am tired. I may fall asleep at the wheel. So if this thing goes off the air, that's, that's what happened. I fell asleep.
Drew Franklin
Just a warning to our callers today. Drew, cranky Shannon may be answering the phone. Just, just be ready.
Ryan Lemon
Hey, I think that's good radio.
Drew Franklin
He may put you on. He may decide not to put you on.
Shannon the Dude
Hey, this, this. I was telling Billy, do you know who like these actors are? Like Bill Scargard, the guy that played Pennywise and the new it movie. Did you see that one, Ryan?
Drew Franklin
Drew, I, I did see the new it movie, but I don't know who that guy is.
Ryan Lemon
I don't know who that guy is. He's kind of scary looking even without having the Pennywise stuff on, right?
Shannon the Dude
Yeah, he's a freaky looking guy. And then Carrie Elwood's who I was telling Drew is in the movie, Saul, which you said we were talking off the air. You've seen that?
Ryan Lemon
Oh yeah.
Shannon the Dude
He's in the Princess Bride. He's in Robin Hood. Men with tights. I feel, I feel like that's one Ryan has seen. Robin Hood.
Ryan Lemon
Oh, I love Robin Hood. Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Oh, I saw that.
Ryan Lemon
Did you say Abe Lincoln?
Drew Franklin
I tried. I have seen that, but I don't know you're talking about that.
Ryan Lemon
I have a Shannon movie question. This isn't your first time doing this extra role, right? Are you trying to climb the ladder and is this your path to Hollywood or is this just a little hobby? Just add more to your, your resume.
Shannon the Dude
You know, I don't really know why I said yes. It just felt like something that would be fun to do. So. Yeah, I mean, in theory, yeah. Next time I'm gonna tell him, don't call me unless you get a speaking role for me. Because this background stuffs were the birds. I don't want to do this anymore. I don't think that's the way you climb the ladder. In Hollywood though, you know, I think you got to go read for parts. So maybe instead of doing background work, I'll just maybe go try to read for a part next time. So I have a speaking role.
Drew Franklin
Well, I heard you say you have on like a stripper. Cop, police officer, uniform stripper.
Shannon the Dude
No, they wanted me to be a state trooper. I said, oh, that sounds fun. I get to go put on a uniform and.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, like a sexy state trooper.
Shannon the Dude
No, no, just a regular. No, like a night. This was from like the 70s. This is like an old school 1977 like Indiana State trooper uniform.
Drew Franklin
Did you post a picture of it?
Shannon the Dude
I did, yeah. I posted a bathroom selfies because see they're really, they're like. They don't want you to take pictures on the set or anything like that. But I go, I gotta go sneak a picture, right? The only place I could sneak a picture was this nasty bathroom that With a dirty bathroom mirror. And I go, at least I'll have a picture to share everybody of me in my uniform. So.
Ryan Lemon
Wow.
Shannon the Dude
Yeah, that's authentic.
Ryan Lemon
That's not like. That's not Halloween express. That's the real deal.
Shannon the Dude
I missed props. I had a gun, I had a little billy club. If things got out of hand, I could just whack somebody with my billy club. I had cuffs, the whole thing, a little badge, the hat.
Ryan Lemon
Impressive.
Shannon the Dude
Do I look official?
Ryan Lemon
I. Much more official than I expected. When you sent me to look at that photo, I would, I would pull over if you. If you told me to.
Drew Franklin
Is there anything you would stay up until 4:30 in the morning for? Shannon stays up until 4:30 in the Morning to be an extra in a movie. Is there anything you'd stay up until 4:30 in the morning for?
Shannon the Dude
Nothing we could say on the air.
Ryan Lemon
Those are the activities Shannon keeps to himself.
Drew Franklin
I have a hard time making it to 11:00 these days, so.
Shannon the Dude
Oh my God. Yeah. I'm just saying. I will never do that again. If you ever get the opportunity, don't take it. Don't do it. It's not, it's not nearly as glamorous as you think. Oh, you think movies it's going to be, you know, Hollywood and glam now it's a whole lot of hurry up and wait standing around. It's awful.
Ryan Lemon
The mountie hat really sets it off though. I didn't expect the hat. That's what got me.
Shannon the Dude
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Alright, before we go to commercial break, we do need to just mention the tragic mid air collision that happened in Washington D.C. it happened late last night, an army helicopter ran into a small jet. They announced today there are no survivors. So it's a recovery effort at this point. It also came out this morning that there were members of the United States figure skating team on the plane that were in Wichita. The plane originated from Wichita. They were in Wichita, I think, for the nationals, for flying back to their homes or a training center or something. So just awful, Drew. It's just awful. There's video of it actually happening. Of course, there'll be all kinds of investigations to see what's going on, but it's sad. And our prayer goes out to all those families.
Ryan Lemon
Yes. So tragic. I mean, we unfortunately have too many tragedies, and sadly, we get a little immune to them. But that made me sick to my stomach last night. That's awful. And I was thinking, like, you're about to land. Like, you have people parked to pick you up. I saw an interview with a guy whose wife was texting him. I can't believe they interviewed him, but he was at the airport waiting. I mean, that is just absolutely awful. And I don't know how it happened, but they're gonna figure that out. And we'll probably even have some. Some major changes to aviation.
Drew Franklin
Guy sitting here tells us a story. Come out, where one of the figure skaters didn't miss. Get on the plane because he. Because of his dog. So he wasn't allowed on that plane. So, you know, he's. Now he's got to live with that, knowing these teammates were on the plane, and he was supposed to be on the plane.
Ryan Lemon
So that could almost be just as bad.
Drew Franklin
Almost just as bad. Yeah. So keep that. Keep everybody in your prayers there. All right, we'll take our break, come back. Go to the phone lines. 859-280-2287 it is ask Anything Thursday. Ryan, Drew, and Shannon, this is Kentucky Sports Radio. All right, welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio. Ryan, Drew and Shane. Is that echoing now, Shannon?
Shannon the Dude
I don't hear anything.
Drew Franklin
Sounds like it is in here. You don't? Okay, good. All right. We set a speaker up in here so they can hear Shannon, since Matt's.
Ryan Lemon
Not here and, you know, good crowd in here.
Drew Franklin
Good. Really good crowd in here. So.
Shannon the Dude
Oh, look at this. Look at you.
Drew Franklin
859-280-2287. That's our phone number for Ask Anything Thursday. Coach Pope did do his coaches show last night. Said some really interesting things. We're gonna play some of them throughout the show. What was your biggest takeaway from listening to what he had to Say, last.
Ryan Lemon
Night, I fully expected him to tell us not to boo. And he kind of didn't say that. He was like, it's competition. It is what it is. I mean, he said very nice things about Cal and how grateful he is and how grateful Kentucky is. But then when it came to the actual fan reaction, he kind of was like, whatever, I'm kind of with you.
Drew Franklin
I kind of thought maybe he would tell us to respect and honor Coach Cal the right way and not boo him. But he said, he basically said something like, look, there'll come a day where we'll be able to recognize all the greatness he did here. Maybe Saturday's not that day. It's still a game.
Shannon the Dude
Do you want me to play the clip?
Drew Franklin
You've got it.
Shannon the Dude
You sent it to me.
Drew Franklin
Okay. I didn't know if you already had it. He is shaking. Granted today.
Shannon the Dude
You can quote him if you want to, or I can play it. It's whatever.
Drew Franklin
Okay, let's play it.
Ryan Lemon
He said it better than we would.
Drew Franklin

Here's what last night at the University of Kentucky to have some of the greatest coaches to ever coach the game of basketball. And certainly Cal is one of those. He's. He's a Hall of Fame coach in his 15 year tenure. What he accomplished at the University of Kentucky was incredible. He, in some ways, he revolutionized the game of college basketball. And he's left a legacy that probably won't be ever reproduced in the same way that he did it. And you know, as a member of BBN and a huge fan of Kentucky basketball, my whole heart is here. And I love Cal. I love Cal for what he did for Kentucky basketball. And on a very personal level, he's been, he's been so great to Leanne and I as a mentor and a friend. And so, you know, it's, it's, it's a little bit of a complicated relationship right now because he's coaching the other team and so that always makes it complicated. But, you know, I know that. I know bbn, man. I just know our fan base and I know there will be all kind. There'd be so much emotion because we care so much. So there'll be so much emotion in the gym on Saturday. And as time goes on and circumstances change, there's gonna be a time when Cal walks back into this arena and he is gonna feel all of the love that BBN possibly has to offer because that's what we do with our family.
Drew Franklin
I think that's probably the best answer he could probably give. You know, honor the guy, respect the guy. He did great things here. I know, but he said something. We're an emotional fan base. Of course we're going to care when our coach leaves and goes. Coach's arrival. Of course it means something to us when we want to. When he walks into the building. So I know you guys talked a lot about it yesterday. If I was in the building, I probably wouldn't do anything. I wouldn't boo him, but I wouldn't clap for him either. But here's the question. What about if Kentucky wins by 30 and he's walking off the floor and he kind of waves to the crowd, how do you. How do you react then you just kicked his butt.
Ryan Lemon
If we went by 30, I don't care what you do. Yeah, I could see that. I, I let my opinions known yesterday. Frank Franklin even came out for a minute.
Drew Franklin
I heard about that.
Ryan Lemon
I kind of hope, kind of said it a little bit, too. I want John Caliperi to be honored. We should name something after him. He should have a banner. I hope one day he gets to come to Rupp. Make him the why. We'll have a party. But Saturday, he's not that guy coming here. He is Arkansas's coach coming here. I don't have booing, but I have no problem with booing and I fully expect people to boo. He is coming to beat Kentucky. He. What's wrong with booing that.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, it's sports.
Ryan Lemon
We're not booing his character. We're booing him because he's walking in wearing an Arkansas shirt.
Drew Franklin
I guess. Cal also talked to the media last night. One surprised he did that. Thought he would send Kenny Payne or Chin Coleman or somebody. And he, he, there was a point where I think he even kind of choked up and said something like, you know, it is going to be an emotional. You know, I have a lot of great memories there. It's one of the best times of my life there. He's got some dear friends here, so I hear that. And it doesn't make me want to beat his brains in his bed on the basketball court because he was such. I mean, he did miraculous things here for a long time.
Ryan Lemon
Well, two things that change it a little bit. One, he really, to his credit, hasn't thrown any jabs in public. Now stuff's come out that he's told recruits, you know, he moved headquarters. That was really dumb. And Kentucky fans didn't like that. If you're in a kid's living room and you're trying to get them, you got to say something. Yeah but in press conferences and like the coaches show that where he said that earlier in the week I think he has a press conference today. He really has been nothing but grateful. So I think that helps a little also. I think it helps that they suck. I mean if they had come in here undefeated that's completely different than them coming in here with one win. I mean flip the script you can almost be a little sympathetic to how bad they are. And I don't think anyone expected one.
Drew Franklin
In five when the schedule came out this summer. When everybody saw that game Arkansas at Kentucky February 1st. You circle it in your big blue marker and know that's the game of the year. I think we thought one reason why because Arkansas was going to be a lot better. They're not very good. They may be the worst team in the SEC right now. Does that play into it at all?
Ryan Lemon
I could see someone that was ready to boo in November countdown to the date being like this is going to be weird now they're terrible piling on. People are still going to boo. The patino clip went viral yesterday. I didn't have memory of that. You were there. Holy crap. They booed. Everyone was booing. That made me think Saturday is going to be pretty bad. That patino when blew my mind. I didn't have a memory of it being that bad.
Drew Franklin
I was there. It was without a doubt the best pre game environment ever. It I don't even think Saturday this side is going to surpass it. Pitino's first trip back to Rupp arena as a coach of Louisville Cardinals. When he comes out the wrong entrance, walks out there. It was unbelievable.
Ryan Lemon
That's why seeing that I think Cal's he's getting it but whatever it's a basketball game we're trying to win. Trying to create a hostile environment.
Drew Franklin
We'll be right back. Take your calls. 859-280-2287. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. T.J. smith, personal injury attorney.
Ryan Lemon
Call T.J. he'll make him pay.
Shannon the Dude
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Drew Franklin
Alright, welcome back. It's Ryan, Drew and Shannon. Here is Matt on the disabled list this morning. I'm gonna help him get some rest, feel better because we need him for Friday. Tomorrow we're at Whiskey Thief in New Lo and of course Saturday is the big Kentucky Arkansas game. I got this text message on. You can text the text machine but if you got my cell phone we're gonna use that as a text machine today, Drew. Is that alright?
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, give him the number.
Drew Franklin
Okay. The guy. No, it's okay. If Cal is smart, he walks out with Ellen and that would almost ensure no booze.
Ryan Lemon
That's cowardly.
Drew Franklin
It's harder to boo her than cow.
Ryan Lemon
We're not using a human shield. Ellen is not a prop. I don't boo Ellen. I feel bad for Ellen, but we are not using Ellen Calipari as a prop to a shield for him to walk out onto the court.
Drew Franklin
If you're going to the game tomorrow, the main advice I can give you is go early. Traffic is going to be a nightmare. Parking is already a nightmare. Everybody wants to be there in their seats when he walks out of the tunnel. That's gonna be the highlight of the game. Maybe get there early, come here to KS Bar. You do a little tailgating and then go down early.
Ryan Lemon
And if you really, really like to be like Shannon and stay up all night. UK hockey has a midnight match. Game, match hockey game, game, game. They have a game at the Lexington ice center at midnight. UK basketball end at 11. Well no, this year 1130 because monitors go straight over the ice center and catch UK hockey. I mean how about that for a doubleheader?
Drew Franklin
They picked a good night to do that. Yeah, Intentional game late at night we have a late tip off game. Wind up late every the fans want to celebrate. You want to have a victory party? Go to the UK hockey game and you have your victory party there.
Ryan Lemon
Absolutely. I wish I could. I got to do a little work after the game. If not for that, I'd be over there too.
Drew Franklin
859-280-2287. That's our phone number and listens callers. We're warning you. We got cranky Shannon today.
Shannon the Dude
No, please stop it.
Drew Franklin
Use your manners.
Ryan Lemon
Everybody. Use your manners.
Drew Franklin
Who we got? Shannon.
Shannon the Dude
Let's go to Corey.
Drew Franklin
Corey. Go ahead. Corey.
E
Hey, what's going on guys?
Drew Franklin
Corey.
Ryan Lemon
I'm doing good. I've got a couple things.
E
First, not.
Ryan Lemon
Not enough of the fans call in.
E
And give the girls team a lot of love. So good luck to them tonight against Alabama. That's gonna be a good game.
Ryan Lemon
Alabama's ranked. And second, I got to give my.
E
Wife a shout out. So she's a die hard Louisville fan.
Ryan Lemon
Bbn, forgive me for that one but.
E
For my birthday, my birthday, same day as Ansley Almanor's and she got me tickets to the game. And having said that, I think I got a boo because like how many years did we spend Booing Patino. And it's. It's no different. Anyone that booed Patino and saying, don't boo, cow.
Ryan Lemon
You're being a hypocrite.
Drew Franklin
Corey, we appreciate it. Thanks for the phone call. He's right. There'll be a day where we can march Cal out, put his name up in the rafters and celebrate what he did here. Saturday is not that day. Saturday, he's coaching an opposing team in an important SEC game that we have to win. Win our rest of our games at home. So, yes, if the fans want to boo, I'm not going to tell fans what to do. They have the right to do whatever they want, but it is still a basketball game and he's on the opposing bench.
Ryan Lemon
It's very easy for me. The John Caliperi that won us all those games is not coming here on Saturday. The Arkansas John Caliperi is coming here. We're booing that version of him. And I just think there's a fundamental difference with people in booing. I've talked to friends. They're like, I can't believe people would boo. And I'm thinking, I can't believe you get upset about booing. It's a basketball game. It's part of the environment. People get booed all the time. We literally, after every player on the other team, they say their name, the student section yells, sucks. Like, that's not. It's not personal. It's part of having a home court advantage. I don't have any problem with booing me. And you boot at bingo.
Drew Franklin
That's true. We boot a bingo in here.
Ryan Lemon
It's not that serious. Like, some people are acting like you would spit in cow's face if you boo. I think it's just Rupp arena creating an environment to win a basketball game. I don't think it's that complicated of a situation.
Drew Franklin
Had somebody send me a message that, hey, nobody booed when Tubby Smith walked back in for the first time. It's a little different.
Ryan Lemon
High point.
Drew Franklin
High point.
Ryan Lemon
Several years later, Several. Several years later, very different.
Drew Franklin
Tubby's on the downside of his career. Much different.
Ryan Lemon
Tubby didn't sit with Mitch Barnhart and say, look at us, we're the best. I'm not going anywhere. And then left two days later.
Drew Franklin
But when Rick Patino walks out, he got the booze. And Cal will have the same on Saturday. Who's next? Shannon?
Shannon the Dude
Devin.
Drew Franklin
Devin. Go ahead, Devin.
F
Hey, guys. I wanted to talk about how the fans react to Cal on Saturday. I'm not going to the game. But for the people who are going, who are undecided on how they're going to react, I think I've got a fourth option because it seems like everything I've heard, everybody thinks there's only three options, right? Clap, boo, or stay silent. But there is a secret option number four, and it is physically possible to boo and clap at the same time. So for the people who are undecided, I don't know if that is a realistic thing to do, but I think there's some good reasons that people might choose do that. One, it perfectly captures what most of the fan base thinks and feels about Cal. Right? We're conflict. So who says we can't act conflicted? Two, it's exactly what we want for this game, right? It would be chaos. It would be wild. And that's the kind of environment that we want. Right? And three, and I think the best reason is it's a power move, guys. Like, it makes the game about the fans, not about Cal, the media. If everybody clapped and booed at the same time, nobody would be talking about Cal. They'd all be talking about big blue Nation.
Drew Franklin
All right, Devin. Appreciate it. The booze, I think, would drown out the claps almost. You know, you could probably see people clapping, but you won't feel guilty.
Ryan Lemon
You're canceling yourself out.
Drew Franklin
Canceling yourself out mentally, you're doing that for. Mentally not make you feel guilty for booing the guy that we revered for so long.
Ryan Lemon
I think this is the whiskey thief idea of the day. I love this. You can boo your heart out while clapping as hard as you can. There'll be no guilt. It's like even. It's like you're doing nothing, and it will just create a louder environment. I'm all for the clap. Boo. Is that possible? Like, you can't rub your stomach and pat your head. Right. Isn't that a thing? Can you. You can boo and clap. Yeah. That's no problem. Yeah. Boo.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. You can do that.
Ryan Lemon
I'm all. I'm all in on clap and boo. I might even clap and boo. I was gonna do nothing. He might have talked me into clap. Boo.
Drew Franklin
Well, there will be people that will clap when not boo. Because, you know, they're welcoming me, welcome him back. And they're like I said, they'll come a day. We can do that for him.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, it's. You're just a neutral party. It's like a house divided when they go vote. You could just stay at home. You just cancel each other Out. If you clap and boo, you're just. You don't matter. You're nothing.
Drew Franklin
What if you're somebody like Brandy Romines of the cake lady, and your best friend is Ellen Calipari, but you're a die hard Kentucky die hard fan.
Ryan Lemon
I love Brandy. She's, she's, she's been in a tough spot because Ellen's her best friend. She even went to an Arkansas game recently. But if you follow her on social media, we know what color she's still wearing.
Drew Franklin
Blue.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. You're not changing Brandy from the 606. Who's next?
Drew Franklin
Shannon.
Shannon the Dude
Let's go to Ben.
Drew Franklin
Ben. Go ahead, Ben.
E
Hey, guys. I'll give a little bit of a opposing view to the boo. Originally, I started out even earlier this week that I would have booed him if I would have been there. But the more I've thought about it the last few days, I'll give you two points that maybe are contrary to that. You tell me what you think. Number one, the first is I don't really understand the argument that people are using Taboo in the fact that he left us and that they hold resentment for that. Well, if we're honest with ourselves, we wanted him gone and he left. And we might not like the way he left, but at the end of the day, we all know that if he had stayed, we probably would hold more resentment for him right now because our season would probably be going the way Arkansas than if he had left. So it's kind of contradictory to me that we would hold it against somebody that did something that we ultimately wanted to do. It's like breaking up with you and your girlfriend breaking up mutually and then telling her she can't date anybody for a while. Well, that's just not the way it works. And number two, I guess I don't really have a problem with people doing. I mean, I know it's not personal. It's just a sport. So, boom, if you want. But at the end of the day, we keep using this thing that, well, there will be a day that John Caliperi will come back and he'll get his flowers. Well, not to make this extremely, you know, more important than it is, but we don't all. We don't know that that day will come. Things happen. Life takes turns. Bad things happen to people. And maybe he won't get that day. Maybe he will. We all hope he will, but I.
Drew Franklin
Think he will take that for granted.
E
That that's gonna happen.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
E
I'm just saying something could happen to the man or something could happen, and he never gets that. So we keep saying that like it's a certainty. Maybe it's not.
Drew Franklin
Appreciate the phone call, Ben. Yeah, I mean, after time goes by, you know, they'll. They'll do the right thing. Especially if Pope is still here at the moment. He will want to do the right thing. But when you're coaching an opposing team in the conference, it's an. You do what your heart tells you to do, man.
Ryan Lemon
And not all boos are going to be created equal. Some people are going to boo because they spent 30,000 on a suite at the SEC tournament and saw one game that was a loss. People like that, that travel, spend lots of money the last two years, are upset. Some people are going to boo because they're mad how they left, how he left. Some people are going to boo because they never liked him. And then people. That I think, is the reason you should boo, is what I'm saying. You're just booing him because he's there as the Arkansas coach. None of that other stuff is attached to your boo. You're booing because you're in Rupp Arena.
Drew Franklin
I go back to after they lost to Texas A and M in the SEC tournament. We were standing right there. And that as Cal is walking off the court, that lady leans over the railing and just screaming at him, is this the gold standard, Cal? Is this what the gold standard's about? Is this just screaming at him about that?
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. And this will. If they boo Saturday will be the third time he's been booed because he got booed then and he got booed after Oakland. It's not like this is new. He's. He's already felt that Big Blue Nation's upset a little bit, at least with the people that travel to those games.
Drew Franklin
859-280-2287. Pope did give his seal of approval last night on the Mountain Mamba nickname.
Ryan Lemon
Best part of the show for Trent Noah. I would. You didn't hear yesterday, but we had a second option. Sweet mountain baby Angel.
Drew Franklin
That's not good.
Ryan Lemon
I don't know.
Shannon the Dude
That's the best one. What are you talking about?
Drew Franklin
You can't call a young man sweet baby.
Shannon the Dude
I can call him anything we want to. Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
Come on down from God on a cloud run.
Drew Franklin
I like Mountain Mamba, but Sweet baby face. Mamba juice. Whatever it was, is awful.
Shannon the Dude
Sweet mountain angel baby.
Ryan Lemon
It was neat hearing Pope endorse Mountain Mamba. It's just another thing where he's proven he's one of us.
Drew Franklin
That's right.
Ryan Lemon
Anything the fan base is latching on to. He's like, yeah, that's cool. I'm in Mountain Mamba. Sounds great. I still would have wished he would have picked Sweet Mountain Baby Angel Mountain. What is it? Sweet Mountain baby Angel. Angel baby.
Drew Franklin
And Triton's going to get more minutes to keep playing the way he's been playing. Just, I think even after the game. Coach Pope said he was the. That was his perfect role to come off the bench and do exactly it. Hit a couple shots, play good defense, dive on the floor for loose balls. That's his perf. The perf played the perfect role, even.
Ryan Lemon
If he hadn't hit that shot from Harlan there at the logo. Just his hustle, I think.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
Has given him enough. Enough moving forward for more minutes. Going back, I know they lost it, Vandy, but he was the only one going after loose balls there for a while.
Drew Franklin
859-280-2287. That's our phone number. We'll take our break, come back, get you lined up here. I've also got a little trivia question for the guys. You know, during the. We did the show this summer, I asked you guys some trivia questions. I didn't give you the homework. You got to be off the top of your head.
Ryan Lemon
All right, we don't do homework.
Drew Franklin
We'll do all that. A lot more coming up here on Kentucky Sports Radio. Attaboy, Shannon. Appreciate you playing that greatest song ever recorded in the history of music. Ryan Lemon, Drew Franklin, Shannon the Dude here on Kentucky Sports Radio.
Shannon the Dude
I wanted to ask you. Well, sorry, I didn't mean to cut you off there. I was going to ask you, will you be performing the song topless in Nashville with us again this year?
Drew Franklin
If Shannon the Dude and the Alice Blue Gown is on stage and they crank this song up, I absolutely would jump on.
Shannon the Dude
We'll be there. We'll be there. We've already got it in the books. Thursday of the SEC tournament, 5:30 to 9:30, depending on if Kentucky's playing. We're gonna be playing at ten Roof Broadway again, so.
Drew Franklin
So that if Kentucky's playing during that time, will they float you guys? You guys?
Shannon the Dude
Yeah, probably so. I don't think it would probably be a wise idea to play during the Kentucky game.
Ryan Lemon
So.
Shannon the Dude
Yeah, the time is still kind of tentative, but I guess it's the 13th. Whatever that Thursday is March the. Yeah, March 13th is the March 13th.
Drew Franklin
Shannon the dude and Alice Bluegown in action down in Broadway in Nashville. There are many reasons to buy beef directly from the farm versus the grocery store. Which is why you need to check out Noche Linda Farms. The environment the cows raised in is much cleaner and safer than commercial raised beef from Feedlots Farm. Raised beef from Nocha Linda Farm is free from antibiotics and hormones. When you buy from Nocha Linda, a Kentucky proud partner, you are supporting local businesses. Lastly, Noche Linda beef is dry aged for 24 days. This makes the product significantly more tender and flavorful than when you can buy at the store. Visit noche lindafarms.com and Shannon, I've got not one, but two deliveries of Noche Linda Farm beef to give to you now because they brought some more this week.
Shannon the Dude
Well, wish you would bring it to me. You've been hoarding my beef. You said you've had it for six months. It's probably freezer burned at this point, but that's okay. Just bring it on over. Tomorrow we're going to be all together in Louisville at Whiskey Thief. You can bring my meat.
Drew Franklin
It's gonna be okay. And it's been in my freezer for like six months.
Shannon the Dude
Vaughn, bring it.
Ryan Lemon
Six months?
Drew Franklin
Yeah, yeah, that's all right.
Ryan Lemon
That's what the freezer's for. Have you eaten for 12 months?
Drew Franklin
Oh, yeah, I ate mine.
Shannon the Dude
Did you eat mine?
Drew Franklin
No, yours is still in the bag in my freezer.
Shannon the Dude
Okay, we'll see.
Drew Franklin
I don't know if I believe he's Got one left. 859-280-2287. Who's our next caller?
Shannon the Dude
Andy.
Drew Franklin
Andy. Go ahead, Andy.
E
All right.
Drew Franklin
First time, long time. How y'all guys doing this morning? Appreciate you calling, Andy.
E
Hey, so quick question.
Drew Franklin
Of all the three former players that.
E
Are coming in tomorrow, Big Z, the Arrow, and the Wagner, who do you.
Drew Franklin
Think would have most benefited by staying back and playing with Coach Pope? Great question, Andy. Appreciate the phone call. I think there's one obvious answer, and it's Big Z, no doubt, to play in Pope's system. A Big who can step out and hit the. Hit the jumper. Hit the shot.
Ryan Lemon
Hit the shot. Right.
Drew Franklin
The shot, yeah, the shot, yeah.
Shannon the Dude
Do we need to dump that?
Drew Franklin
It is Big Z. I agree with.
Ryan Lemon
You, and he played well recently, but there was a stretch where he wasn't playing much at all at Arkansas. And I was thinking, this poor guy, we're have to put up free Big Z signs again. I think he would have been great with Pope with the way he runs, but also think a dude would have been pretty fun, especially putting him at the four. You know, he's playing so well at Arkansas bulked up even more I really wanted to do to stay. I know he was already gone before Pope got here but I've, I've always.
Drew Franklin
Liked to do a do announced he was leaving even before Cal did. Yeah and then he ends up going back with Cal to Arkansas. That was always a little strange.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, I don't, I don't know what happened there. Makes you wonder if the Kentucky was the issue but I really, I really don't know.
Drew Franklin
D.J. wagner is now have to play point guard full time with boogie flan out the injury but of course you know if college stayed you'd have boogie Flan Billy Richmond, Carter Knox in addition to adu Big Z and dj wouldn't that.
Ryan Lemon
Be fun DJ I'm looking forward to having him back too. But on a basketball note, Kentucky needs Lamont Butler back to give DJ Nelly Davis some problems.
Drew Franklin
Any thoughts on if you will see him Saturday or not?
Ryan Lemon
I'm a little confused with Mark Pope right now. I thought Andrew Carr was out for 10 years when he was talking after the Vandy game and then he four days later we saw him so even when Pope was did the if Butler's back I kind of thought well we just did this with Carr so I don't know. I don't know what to make of it. His stuff his dad's retweeted yeah other stuff is promising that it's just kind of a bruise shoulder but I don't know but I hope it's Saturday.
Drew Franklin
Yeah I don't think he's out long term but still short term. I don't know how much he'll get to play Saturday.
Ryan Lemon
And he had the video with where he popped on Brandon Garrison's Instagram said I'll be back after the win at Tennessee.
Drew Franklin
859-280-2287 who's next? Shannon David. David. Go ahead, David.
E
Hey, I hope the Cats take more three point shots Saturday than Arkansas. I think if they do that they'll probably win. And then I have another option which I think is better than option four for the fans. And that is when Cal Perry first comes out. You know, people cheer or do nothing but don't boo. But then they introduce him as their coach. Boo all you want. And I think that clarifies, you know, we're booing the opponent's coach. What do you think?
Ryan Lemon
I like that. Wait for the official announcement.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. So not necessarily walks out during all the the videos, the pop and circumstance, the music that's going on but when they announce and the head coach of the University of Arkansas.
Ryan Lemon
Right.
E
Right after the players are announced.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Okay. Appreciate it. Thank you, man. Appreciate the phone call.
Ryan Lemon
I like the idea, but getting 20,000 people on the same page is impossible. People will boo. But I do like that where you're letting them know. As I keep saying, I'm not booing, old cow. I'm booing. Present day, you're in Fayetteville, California. It would make it a little more clear if they did wait till the moment they said Arkansas head coach John Calipari. But I think some people that have already made it clear they're traveling just to boo, they're going to be a little antsy.
Drew Franklin
So now the spotlight falls on Patrick Widmer, the PA announcer.
Ryan Lemon
You put the pressure on him.
Drew Franklin
I put the pressure on Patrick. Now, how's he going to announce Caliperi? Because he used to really blare the name John Caliper, you know. Now what's he say?
Shannon the Dude
You can't do that now. You can't. You can't give him the pomp and circumstance now that he's the visiting coach. You got to just, you know, John.
Ryan Lemon
Caliperi, maybe some Liam Cohen energy out of him. Or he could say, everyone hold your booze until we announce him as the Arkansas coach.
Drew Franklin
Well, I was proud of the way Pope answered the question. It's going to happen. As long as they win the game, I don't really care. Yeah, they have to win that game.
Ryan Lemon
That's everyone, not just us. Everyone is talking about boo. Not to every UK blog, podcast, Twitter account. They're all talking about booing. Let's not get lost. We need to win this day.
Drew Franklin
Still a game you have to win.
Ryan Lemon
Absolutely. And Cal is going to talk today in Arkansas. And as you said, Pope said good things. I fully expect Kyle to say nothing but the right things when we hear from. From him for the last time for the game.
Drew Franklin
Now, yesterday, I guess Matt talked about the awful announcing article that he is involved. He ended up tweeting that out last night. So it wasn't. It wasn't out during the show yesterday, but it's out now. If you guys want to try to check that out and go. Maybe go see here during the break and. But it's. It's. Go to his Twitter account. You can see he's got a couple links there to it.
Ryan Lemon
Kind of got a little Greenberg Matt.
Drew Franklin
Angle in there, I think so. I think he talks about. Don't. Don't tell us how we're supposed to cheer. Don't tell us what we're supposed to think.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, he's not taking shots at Greenberg. He's saying, these national pundits don't live here. Why do we have to listen to you?
Drew Franklin
Yeah, yeah, it's perfect what he's been saying here on the show for weeks.
Ryan Lemon
Now, but it is a good interview on Awful Announcing.com. check it out.
Drew Franklin
All right. 859-280-2287. That's our phone number. If you want to call and get on board, we'll get ready to take our break, come back. Got a nice crowd here on a Thursday afternoon. Drew Bar and Grill.
Ryan Lemon
Look at this. Applause.
Drew Franklin
Our pregame show Saturday will begin at 6:30, correct? 6:30 to 7:30. We tip off at 9. Gonna be a late one. If I can stay up to the end of it, it should be a good one. All right, we're right back.
Ryan Lemon
Stay up for that one, Ryan, Drew.
Drew Franklin
And Shannon here on Kentucky Sports Radio.

A significant portion of the episode centers on the highly anticipated Kentucky vs. Arkansas basketball game scheduled for Saturday. The hosts delve into the sensitive topic of fan reactions to Arkansas Coach John Calipari coaching against Kentucky. They discuss the emotional complexity surrounding Calipari’s legacy at Kentucky and the mixed feelings about him now leading an opposing team.
Drew Franklin opens the discussion with his anticipation of Coach Calipari’s appearance, noting, “We have named more Heartland schools in this first segment than maybe ever in the history of Kansas” [10:30]. Ryan Lemon shares his thoughts on how fans might react, balancing respect for Calipari’s contributions with the competitive nature of the game. He states, “I want John Caliperi to be honored. We should name something after him” [20:29], yet acknowledges the likelihood of booing, especially since Calipari is now coaching Arkansas.
Shannon the Dude contributes by sharing his recent frustrating experience of being an extra in a movie, keeping the tone light before returning to the main topic. The hosts ponder strategies for managing fan behavior, debating whether booing should be directed at Calipari personally or simply the opposing team’s coach. Listener calls further enrich the conversation, offering diverse perspectives on whether to clap, boo, or adopt a mixed reaction during the game.
Notable quotes include Shannon humorously warning listeners about his exhaustion from working late on a movie set: “...If this thing goes off the air, that's what happened. I fell asleep” [12:08].

The show invites listeners to participate in "Ask Anything Thursday," encouraging calls and texts to discuss various topics. Several callers share their views on how fans should handle the upcoming game against Arkansas, particularly regarding their reactions to Coach Calipari. Devin suggests a creative approach: “Clap and boo at the same time. It makes the game about the fans, not about Cal” [28:00]. The hosts humorously debate the feasibility of this tactic, agreeing that while it’s a humorous idea, coordinating such a response with thousands of fans would be challenging.
Another caller, Ben, offers a contrarian view, arguing that fans should reflect on their reasons for booing and recognizing that mutual respect might be more beneficial in the long run: “Maybe he won't get that day. Maybe he will. We all hope he will, but I...” [32:21].
These interactions highlight the hosts' commitment to fostering an open dialogue with their audience, addressing both the competitive spirit and underlying respect within the sports community.
Timestamp: [37:04] - [42:27]
