And then it's all water. Water, juice, like, but only everything has to be clear.

Like you can get. I can have Gatorade. Zero. But it's got to be Frost flavor. You know, it has to. Everything has to be clear.

Your stomach yelling at you yet? Because it's going to be.

I don't start taking the stuff and.

I just mean not eating. Is that going to.

[Drew Franklin]

No problem. It'll be fine. I mean, you know what? Just Billy yet last night just opened the show. Like, you're just so skinny. I don't even see you anymore. And I was like, that's nice. He was. And he made some little SNY comments. So I kind of like, maybe, but you needed it. That was exactly what he said. But it was something like that. And I was like, you know what, Billy? Shut up. So, yeah, that'll. I'm gonna have to get a new one.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah, you're gonna lose weight the next 24 hours. There's no doubt.

[Drew Franklin]

So. Yeah, I didn't feel like eating last night after watching that game. I think the first half was one of the worst UK halves in a long time. I mean, I don't know there. I can't remember a game where we were out of it quicker with no chance to come back. You know, we. We were. We were done. There was no two minutes left in the first half. Game was. Was over. Over. It was the most weird down at halftime since the game after neural is Noel got hurt in 2013. And I remember that Game distinctly watching it and going, we're, we're done. Like this is no shot now. You know, they did play better in the second half. Cut it to 11 at one point. I wish they could have gotten it to single digits just to see if everybody would have, you know, but didn't come to that. And we ended up losing by. What was it, 14, 14. I don't know what you say. Total breakdown. Defensively, a disaster. Offensively, pretty much in the first half, everyone but Amari a disaster. Second half, Robinson and Oway played really well, but still just not a great effort, right?

[Matt Jones]

It was, it was embarrassing on the offensive end that first half. How many two footers did they miss? Two footer after two footer after two footer.

[Drew Franklin]

I think they missed seven shots within two feet in the first half. And, but, but I will say it wasn't like they just rimmed. I mean they were bad. Some of them were bad shots back to the basket. Garrison shots on three out of four plays away. Trying to make a layup with four guys on him. I mean there's a little bit of that. Yeah, they were close, but it wasn't like they were great shots to begin with.

[Matt Jones]

And first half, a lot of really bad turnovers, but of course we're going to get into it. But the defensive end in the first half, I mean, we were leaving those guys wide open. And when the guy can sit, don't even jump the set shooter shot. Guy just killing us wide open.

[Drew Franklin]

He shot like the oldest man at the ymca. Like foot. I mean, didn't eat, but, but we didn't even like go out on him.

[Matt Jones]

Didn't even go out on him.

[Drew Franklin]

We left Amari and Garrison left three bigs. Like just looking at him like, how you doing out there, man? I mean, there's one thing to give people shots, it's another thing to not even fathom contesting it. Like to just go, here you go. I mean you leave somebody that open, a lot of people can make it.

[Shannon The Dude]

Yeah, it looked like Ole Miss was in an open gym. Just the five of them taking turns getting shots up. I mean there was no defense whatsoever. They weren't even having to work at all to get open looks. It's like they were just out there having fun. So they were at the Hamburg Wild this morning just getting some shots up before work. UK did nothing. Even when they would like half ass close out, they were closing out on threes without putting their hands up. I've never even seen that. What are you even doing?

[Drew Franklin]

Like, he's screaming at him as they went by.

[Shannon The Dude]

Absolutely no effort defensively in that first.

[Drew Franklin]

It was awful. It was awful. And it's kind of unexplainable to me why it would be that bad. I mean, I can understand, okay, you're guarding a guy, he's faster. Faster than you, he gets to the basket. But I've never seen people look more out of swords. And, I mean, there were some historic things that happened last night. But, I mean, think about this. There were three things that if you saw one of these in a game, you would go, wow. Amari had the fourth triple double in UK history.

[Matt Jones]

Yep. Good for him.

[Drew Franklin]

Yeah. I don't know that it'll be one people people love. I mean. Yeah. Fourth triple double in UK history in a loss.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah. Right.

[Drew Franklin]

He joins Chris Mills, De'Aaron Fox, and Isaiah Briscoe. Throw Amari Williams in that. What a bizarre list of humans that is. That happens. We get. Ole Miss only has one turnover.

[Matt Jones]

Yes.

[Drew Franklin]

Only the second time in 25 years an sec team has done that in a game. In a. In an SEC game, Ansley Almanor and Trent Noah do something that has not happened at Kentucky since 2009, and they both do it in the same game, which is play more than 10 minutes and not register a statistic. None.

[Matt Jones]

Nothing.

[Drew Franklin]

No anything.

[Matt Jones]

Not even a foul.

[Drew Franklin]

Not even a foul. Almanor for 15 minutes, Noah for 13 minutes. We haven't had a player play more than seven minutes and do that since 1991.

[Matt Jones]

Wow.

[Drew Franklin]

And we've only had one guy play nine minutes. That was Perry Stevenson in 2009. As far as the numbers go, no one can ever find it happening. For someone that played over 10 minutes. And we had two guys do it last night. That's Drew. That's insane.

[Shannon The Dude]

On a night. There was a triple double, the fourth in history, they somehow found a harder stat to pull off to have those two do that in the same game. I mean, the numbers are there. That's never happened before. I thought amari doing the fourth time ever was. Was wild. You have two guys registered 28 trillion playing 15 and 13 million.

[Drew Franklin]

Two guys who did something that we can't find any Kentucky player doing ever, and they did it in the same game. That's. That's amazing. It is. And yet, you know, Jackson Robinson shot over 50% from the field. He played well away, had a deep, pretty. A really good second half, but it's a bad loss. And, you know, after the game, the Mark Pope radio press conference, or Mark, excuse me, radio interview with Tom Leach. Was just odd. He almost acknowledged he didn't really know what to do. I give him. I really give him a lot of credit. I think he's unbelievably honest in terms of, like, he's not going to just bs. He's just he. And. And he basically said, we got to figure something out. I don't know what it is, but we got to figure something out.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah. He said. I think he used the phrase, we're hemorrhaging right now, you know, and he said, we got to find out how to fix it now.

[Shannon The Dude]

I liked his honesty, but at the same time, it's like, all right, let's get some answers. Because he said in the press conference, it was almost his answer to every question. I've done a poor job. I've failed them. I don't have the answers right now. And I like that he looks in the camera and admits that and he's being authentic. But right now, we need some answers soon. Like, I like the honesty.

[Drew Franklin]

I've always. Like when I watch politicians, I've always said, I wonder why politicians don't just sometimes say, I don't know, but we're going to figure it out. And I've always. Because I thought I would respect that because they always act like they know everything. Nobody knows everything, and most people don't know anything. Right. So I've always been like, I wonder if you would. If what happened if you get up and go, you know, I'm not sure. Let me check, and we'll get back with you. Yeah, right. I thought that would be inspiring. But then Mark did that, and part of me was like, well, lie to me. Make me feel better, you know, which. I don't think I believe that, but it was interesting to hear somebody go, yeah, I don't know. And you're like, oh, well, I was hoping you knew.

[Matt Jones]

Is it as simple as they just don't. Lamont Butler's. That's valuable to the team.

[Drew Franklin]

I think that's. Obviously, that's a big part of it. But they did beat Gonzaga in Tennessee without him. And I'm not saying that that means they should win, but Lamont Butler or not, you shouldn't give up 98.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah.

[Drew Franklin]

On the heels of letting Arkansas score 89. Right.

[Shannon The Dude]

I think there's a bit of an overreaction to all this because they've lost two point guards, and I. I think that hurt them against Arkansas, Vandy and Alabama last night. I don't have the Butler excuse. That's the first game of the Butler drought, where I don't think you can just say it was him. I don't think he would have been much help because it was just pure effort. Now unless he's out there yelling at everyone and he's a leader that gets it out of him, maybe that would have helped. Butler wasn't the issue.

[Drew Franklin]

You don't think they had effort?

[Shannon The Dude]

No, that first. That's honestly the first time maybe in my life I've wanted to change the channel and do something else because I just.

[Drew Franklin]

Yeah.

[Shannon The Dude]

When it's defense and you're just watching guys shoot threes, that's different than getting beat. Maybe your shots aren't going in. Last night was different for me, it was just pure. That first half was guys just taking open shots.

[Drew Franklin]

For the second half I actually thought we played pretty good defense and then they hit contested shots. I mean they, to some extent in the second half, some of that was that they were good. But in the first half, I think if you go back and watch. I said this during the postgame show and then as I was falling asleep, I went back and looked at the play. Go watch the play where they, where they went zone. And if that doesn't look like a team that was baffled, go watch that play where that. Because we know we've all said let's play 13 1. Presumably they worked on it because of the Arkansas game. Go watch that play. When they get in the 131 zone, all five guys are looking at each other and not exactly sure where to go. They're, they're, they're talking and they're pointing and it's like not one of the five seemed to think they were in the right place.

[Shannon The Dude]

Car got all the way turned around.

[Drew Franklin]

Car, car. Car on that play was facing in the weirdest direction. No, I mean it like. Okay, so act like you're for, for those of you on radio, act like you're playing defense. You would face the middle court line.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah, right, right.

[Drew Franklin]

Car is on the right wing of the one three one. If you're in that position, your body should either be facing the mid court line or open to your right to chase that side of the goal. Right? Yeah, he was open to the left. Okay, think about that. He was faced towards the other side of the court and didn't know anyone was behind him.

[Matt Jones]

And there was a guy behind him.

[Shannon The Dude]

Who drilled a three with cars back.

[Drew Franklin]

Honestly was like, is. Does he realize the play is happening right now? And then of course the guy ends up wide open and hits a three that play set. And by the way, Pope did not go back to it. One play, probably. That's why. Because they were baffled.

[Matt Jones]

You know, after the Alabama game, he did say he wish he would take more risk defensively.

[Drew Franklin]

Don't do that.

[Matt Jones]

Maybe this is one thing he thought he could try, but after he tried it, obviously it didn't work.

[Drew Franklin]

I mean, the guy was like, there wasn't anybody nearing when he shot that.

[Matt Jones]

You're right. They did hit some contested shots in the second half.

[Drew Franklin]

It was over. It was over.

[Matt Jones]

Way over.

[Drew Franklin]

Game was over at halftime. I know we made the little run, but the game was over at halftime.

[Shannon The Dude]

Offensively, they played well in the second half. They just could not get a single stop for it to really matter. I mean, they had a big run where they were scoring just one after another, but they were giving it up on the other end. So it wasn't really doing. Doing much damage on the scoreboard.

[Drew Franklin]

So now what?

[Matt Jones]

Got to beat South Carolina on Saturday. You have to.

[Drew Franklin]

But just in general, like, how much confidence do you have for the rest of the year?

[Matt Jones]

I mean, it's definitely taking a hit. You know, I'm thinking now they're going to struggle to even have a winning record in the sec. They may have a losing record in the sec.

[Drew Franklin]

May.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah.

[Shannon The Dude]

I just. For what I see as the problem, it's like intensity and toughness and I don't know how you flip that switch on February 5th, but didn't you.

[Drew Franklin]

I felt like that was something they had in abundance.

[Shannon The Dude]

I thought so, too, but I mean, there's guys just not even trying defensively. And if they are trying it, they're just awful at it because it's not looking like it.

[Drew Franklin]

Jimmy Dykes, for all the people that like. I thought he. I thought he said it at the end of the first half, towards the end of the first half when we were just getting rocked, he said, this is not an elite, athletic team. You have to win with execution and effort. He's right.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah.

[Drew Franklin]

And we're not executing or playing with 100% effort, and we're not talented enough to just wish ourselves through it.

[Matt Jones]

Right.

[Drew Franklin]

And if we do that, I mean, I. I hope that's not. I hope we don't have more of those. But do we know that we won't?

[Matt Jones]

No. I think the answer is we don't know at this point. And if we're still without Butler for a couple more weeks, I mean, they've. I don't know what the answer is.

[Drew Franklin]

I'm really surprised. I'm really surprised at the last two games. Yeah, every game up till now I felt like I at least understand why it happened. You went to Georgia, we couldn't hit a shot right. Went to Vandy, couldn't get a stop down the stretch. Alabama's just better than us. Okay. But the last two games, I feel like I'm watching a different team than I watched in the first however many 20 and that I don't really understand and I, I, I don't know. Well, I mean I'm, I'm, I'm not giving up. The good thing is they can still get hot. I mean we were, for all our talk, they did score 51 points in the second half. It was towards the end of the first half, the ball kind of pops out and it's at the top of the key and he reaches for the ball but like almost sees that he's about to get hit and backs away. And the Ole Miss guy comes in full steam, gets it, comes down the court, layup. And if he had, there would have been a collision if Robinson came in. But the Ole Miss guy was willing to risk and get the collision. And Jackson Robinson stood back and guess what? The Ole Miss guy gets the ball.

You know, that's something, you know that, that wanted you. So we used to call it, you know, you got to want to go get the basketball I think has affected him in rebounding. You get, you got to want to rebound. You got to want to go get the ball. We saw some a couple of times last night where in the post. One guy just stepped in front of Andrew Carr. Didn't even, you know, Andrew Carr wasn't even trying to block him. The guy just kind of just stepped in front of him. So a lot of it is just effort.

What do you think about Jimmy Dyke saying he thought they looked lackluster in the walkthrough and earlier in the day?

Yeah, he did say that.

Yeah. I mean, I could believe it with how that first half started. I don't know what Pope's doing or not doing to be have such bad starts. I mean, even in the big wins, they were second half comebacks. I mean it seems most games they, they get off to a slow start.

Yeah. So, yeah, I don't know. One person says, Matt, your first caller on the post game show was right. You guys are not being critical enough of Pope. I thought you were too critical of Takal. Now you're not critical enough of Pope. That doesn't make sense. I mean. Okay, let me counter that with this one. Next comment. Matt, you are way too negative. It's one game. It's one game. Pope got this. This is why it's hard to play here. Everybody questions the coach too much. Well, first. So first of all, I mean, I don't know how you answer both those questions. I am very positive about the overall direction of the program. I still think. I still think everything is positive. I think these last two games though, have been terrible. And I don't know how we can say otherwise. I mean, the day you're okay with Kentucky losing to a 1 in 6 SEC team at home, right. And then being down 23 at halftime for the first time since 2013 on the road, there is a part of me that says what Mark Pope said to me in his office. This isn't Kentucky. If you think that's cool. I mean, it's not like if you think a losing team coming into RUP and beating you and leading pretty much the whole game and then you following that up with the biggest halftime deficit in 12 years is fine, then it's not Kentucky. Then it's, you know, whatever. Oklahoma.

Yeah. Throw in it's what, been four out of five you lost.

[Drew Franklin]

Yeah, four out of five. It's only the second time we've lost four out of five since 2009. I mean, you know, that's not good.

They very well and were expected to lose last night. They were an underdog and if they had gone down there and you get beat on a buzzer beater, lose by three, that. Okay, you swallow that pill and come home. But Ole Miss average is like 76 points a game at 98 points. And as crazy as the triple double and the 28 trillion are, I think 24 assists to one turnover is crazy. As though if, if the four of us went to a gym and just passed it around, we would dribble it off our knee out of bounds and find turnovers with no defense. Like, how do you not have one term two turnovers in a single basketball game, played 40 minutes with one turnover. That is just. You're not being guarded there.

One turnover was the dude just kind of lost the handle out on top of the key. That was it. It was not even like it was a force turn. I mean, you know, he just kind of just lost the handle of it.

So is it fixable? Let me answer that two questions. I think we would all agree if Butler comes back, this is better.

And even at Vandy we lost, but we were in it. I mean it was, you know, it was not a.

I don't know what's happened these last two games.

He is obviously a big hit. Any team in the country that lost two point guards would be losing a bunch of games. But that is not explain how Kobe Braya seemed to disappeared. How I mean a lot of guys do have regressed. I mean Brandon Garrison doesn't seem to be playing as well as he was earlier in the year. The three point shooting isn't nearly what it's supposed to be. The percentage is actually good. They're not getting and they should be taken even more four right now.

See, if I had one question for Pope, I would say you said at the beginning of the year 30 to 35 threes. His words were we have to shoot 30 to 35 threes or we're not going to be good. That was exactly what he said. We've only done that in three of the nine games and in six of the nine games the other team has taken more than us. Oh, how, like how we're not good. Let me say we're not good enough to beat people with twos. There are teams that are good enough to do it. We're not one of them.

We're not one. We're not good enough to beat teams with twos. I don't understand why we're not taking these. I mean Again, we shot 48% last night from three.

He's got to change his offense a little bit to get guys open because what was working against Bucknell and Georgia State, against defenses like that is not working now. His dribble handoff and the back door cut. They gotta start setting some screens for Brea because when he, you see him, he gets the body dribbles. He's trying so hard to get a shot off, but he just can't create for himself. They're not getting, they're not getting the looks that they were getting at one time and they're not going to get those anymore because this is the SEC and they're getting up in their face.

And it may be that the offensive style that you play. So like the Big 12 is a great conference, probably was the best conference in basketball last year. But the totality of the conference is not as athletic as this one. This conference, even the Bad players are great athletes. Yeah, right. We are the most unathletic team in the conference. I don't even think that's a debate. Now, we're better than a lot of teams, but we're the most unathletic. And we have to play a style to counter these athletes. We cannot out athlete these guys because it's bothering us.

These guys coming up in our grill are bothering us.

Ole Miss and Arkansas are an example. What I'm talking about. I mean, Arkansas has great athletes, but not great skill. But we have. But we can't get shots off against these teams.

And the best conference by far. So let's talk about what we have to do to get to the tournament. We got nine games left. 20, you're in safe. 19, you're probably in pretty safe. And 18, I still think you're in. You're in reeling, but you're in. I think you get lower than 18 and then it starts to get hairy. We get to 18 simply by beating South Carolina, Vandy and LSU at home.

I'm going to say five. I think we're going to win those Three, we'll steal either at Oklahoma, at Texas or maybe even at Missouri and we win one of Tennessee, Auburn at home. That's going to be our finishing signature thing. So I'm going to say 5 and 4 to finish 9 and 9 in conference. What about you?

I was still in a good place before tip off yesterday. Even Arkansas. I got over it pretty quickly. I genuinely thought that they would lose last night and win the next four. But how bad last night was has kind of got me worried even about Saturday.

So we lose Saturday. I mean South Carolina hasn't won a game all year in conference. You really think we can lose that.

[Shannon The Dude]

Game after last night? I think they lose to anyone if they don't fix that defense. But I genuinely thought until last night they lost by four or were down 27. I thought they would beat South Carolina, Tennessee. What is it, Vandy? And then one more. I thought they'd win the next four and we'd all just say all right, that's fine, we're good. And then hope to win some others. Now I think they win for the rest of the year. I don't know which. But the good thing is like they only drop four places in the net. There's still top 25 here. Lenardi just put out his bracketology. There are four seed and we're acting like the sky's fall and they're a four seed after that game.

Are now they don't look good and.

They need to win some games moving forward but.

And teams will keep beating each other.

The non seed will play at 1pm on Wednesday.

What if it was against Arkansas?

It'll probably be against South Carolina. So you'd play South Carolina.

Then you'd play the next day maybe against Vandy or Mississippi State and then you might win that. And then you probably play Auburn and that's not great. But you could end up getting two wins in the SEC tournament that way helps your resume. And you might then go into the NCAA with like 21, you know so, and I'm, I'm looking for something positive here.

Okay, well, I'm as down as anyone, but if they beat Tennessee and RUP two games from now, would anyone be surprised? I mean, we just saw they did Tennessee and Knoxville, so they could do that. I mean, we'd be very confused because this year has been a roller coaster. But I mean, they're still capable of it, even though they looked so bad.

I think Saturday is a huge game. I mean, it should be a. No, no big thing. But we cannot lose.

He gets cleared, that, that's an injury that needs a bit of a time to come back with conditioning. Everything else has been so long since he's played. I hope we see him, but I don't even think you're going to get the best Kerr, even if that, that foot gets back to 100%.

This is, this is a technical comment, I guess, about, about what's going on with the Cats. Everybody says, oh, we got to, you know, shoot the ball a little better on the easy bunny shots in the lane or we've got to play better defense. And, And I'd love to hear your take on how we accomplish that. I watched play last night, sitting there, sitting there with my wife. And I'm, I'm seeing guys that don't close out even. I'm seeing guys that leave their feet on shot fakes. I'm seeing, seeing guys that don't keep their butt to the baseline. I'm seeing guys that allow cutters to cross their face. I see no connection defensively when the five are on the floor working together. And you've got to be able to have that communication defensively and have a flow and know that your guy's going to be there if you get beat. And I think that's part of the problem. We have guys that get beat off the bounce and they're depending on help to be there. The help's not there, then they just all turn around and look at each other and hold their palms up, which. You saw that.

No, there's a lot of that. There's a lot of that. So I, I said on the post game, I appreciate the call. I think defense is a. Defense is a. Is. Our problems are 50%. We just ain't athletic enough. And that part's not going to change. Yeah. Okay. So some of it to me is like we're giving up 80 to almost everybody. The difference between 80 and 98, though, are the things we could fix, like closing out on shooters, like cutting off baseline, like rotating over, like sticking your arms in the air when people shoot.

Trying to get a steal.

[Drew Franklin]

Like trying. Yeah. So we're. I don't think there's going to be anything we can do that keeps us from giving up 80 on nights like that. But we still could have won with 80 if we don't give up 98. And I think the difference between 80 and 98, Drew, is the fixable part.

Yeah. And there's guys on the roster that are just never going to be good defenders. That's how they're built. But there were early possessions in the game where I'm looking at TV and I'm like, they're not even in a defensive stance. Yeah, they don't even. Are they even? Do they know they're on defense? It was just like standing up, stiff as a board, kind of looking around. It's like, at least bend your knees and act like you're going to attempt.

Yeah. But I will say when I watched that they, oh, miss, wore themselves out in the second half. So part of it is withstand that first half. They cannot play that kind of defense the whole game. She said, we haven't won a game all year. We're 0 and 14 and we scored 18 points in our last game. Well, they're, they're now 0 and 15, but they doubled their point total from the previous game.

Well, that's good. Why didn't you want to watch the Kentucky game? What was your. What was like? You, you're. I assume you're a fan. Why not? Why did you want to skip it.

After Saturday? I, I just. It was so such a downer. I just didn't know what to do about it because I, I didn't have a high expectation of what was going to happen.

[Drew Franklin]

Yeah. And turns out I wanted.

I, I wanted to watch it. And yet I did want to watch it. But the reason I really wanted to call it, I heard because I, I didn't miss your show. I, I will listen to your show after the game. The call in show every time. It. It's like the sanity hour. It keeps me sane. But I heard you talking about what you have for tomorrow and. Yeah, and I, I had an experience with. I was scheduled for colonoscopy and you have to drink the salt water stuff, right?

Well, anyway, I didn't realize they have the sweetener to go with it and I didn't find it and so I was drinking the salt water without the sweetener.

Oh, yeah, don't. We don't have to do that. That sounds gross. I'm sorry. I'm about to go to break, but that sounds like an awful thing. I'm sorry you had to do that. I appreciate the call. Yeah. I start this afternoon with the, with the stuff.
