Welcome everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio here live Friday, February 7th at Kentucky branded out next to Fayette Mall. For what? We've been coming out here for 10 years. Probably one of the best day of deals I think they've ever had. You can give us a shout on the Clark's Puppet Shop phone line, 859-280-2287. A Vision Auto Glass text machine, 772-774-5254. In this edition, sponsored by the TJ Smith Law Office, you call TJ will make them pay. Guys, we've been doing shows at Kentucky Branded since it first opened. I think we were at maybe their grand opening. I don't think they've ever done what they're doing here today. They have buy one get one free T shirts and hoodies. So start with that. So I mean, there's UK gear, there's KSR gear, there's player gear. Buy one, get one free, then 20% off the entire store. So like I can't do the math, but you do the buy one get one free and the 20% off, that's like 93% off. I believe by the by the numbers, it's an unbelievable deal all day here at their other stores and then online. For those of you that live elsewhere, Kentucky branded.com and then we're just handing out gift cards the entire time. We just gave one for 25, but we're giving one for like 200 at the end. Drew I've never seen the deals and I, you know, I'M not a big shopper, but I just gave a ton of clothes away to charity and I think I'm going to replace them with UK clothes from here.
Drew Franklin
Every time we come here, I and many others end up leaving with a big bag full of stuff because of the deals are so good. And even though we've had this nil era a while, you look up and I'm still getting used to like Travis Perry hoodie on a mannequin. You don't know a T shirt. But it's good for those players that they get to have that. They have a lot of it here.
Matt Jones
And we have a brand new stock ride of KSR gear. I said let's update our selection a little bit. So now they have really nice hoodies, Nike hats. They're a little what? They're a little expensive, but they're worth it. I've had my Nike KSR hat I've had for a decade. So nice to see new KSR gear as well.
Ryan Lemond
With Valentine's Day a week away. Nothing says loving like a KSR T shirt. I mean, what more you want to score points with your money?
Matt Jones
I don't think I've ever dated someone that that's what I think they would have wanted. But if, but I do think there's some people listening that that's what they would have wanted. But I would take it as a gift for me.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, to each their own, but I mean that. And you've also got Nashville coming up, SEC tournament. You may need to, you know, get some an update to your wardrobe. This is a great place to do it.
Matt Jones
All right. So it's nice to see you guys. Sorry I missed yesterday. I was otherwise detained with the colonoscopy. 20, 25, got a clean bill of health. They said I don't have to come back for 10 years. He said they, he said normally they give five year tickets. He said, but occasionally if we go in and it's 100% clean, we give a 10 year golden ticket. And Ryan, they gave me a 10 year. I feel I had won. I was like cheering my colon on when I got home. I was like, well done. That's what I, that's what I'd been hoping.
Ryan Lemond
Well, I, I, I can tell you this now.
Matt Jones
What do you mean now?
Ryan Lemond
When I went back to get you, I was secretly was getting ready to videotape you because I thought you'd be out of it on your, you know.
Matt Jones
Anesthesia you wanted to make. Yeah, because they called you back. It's real. When they Go, who. Who's with you? And you say, ryan. And they go, how's he related to you? And I said, not at all. And the re. And then you came back and you were going to tape me.
Ryan Lemond
I was going to tape you. And I go back there, and you're. You're a little droggy, but you're very, you know, alert and awake.
Matt Jones
So I'm more coherent than you are telling the story.
Ryan Lemond
No doubt about it.
Shannon The Dude
Did you reward your colon with the cheeseburger?
Ryan Lemond
I knew he was fine when, like, he started bragging on himself.
Matt Jones
10 years.
Ryan Lemond
I don't have to come back for 10 years.
Matt Jones
I'm a very competitive person. They said they only give the 10 year one to, like, 3 to 5% of the people. I was like, that's right. Colon.
Shannon The Dude
I can't wait for the next ambient show. My colon is cleaner than yours.
Matt Jones
That would be a good bragging point.
Shannon The Dude
Be you.
Matt Jones
So I do want to say to people, first of all, you should do it. It's a really easy, like, it's. I mean, the prep is not the most fun thing in the world, but, like, I actually think people talked it up a little more. Like, I was expecting it. Ryan, you've done this, so I'll talk to you. I was expecting it to be awful. I mean, it's not the greatest, but it's not awful. You know, I mean, the only part I had to eat, take those pills. Taking 12 pills in 15 minutes when they're big horse pills, that's actually kind of a. By the 10th one, you're gagging a little bit. But besides that, I didn't think it was that bad.
Ryan Lemond
It's. It's not really that bad. You just don't want to stray far away from your restaurant.
Matt Jones
Yeah, that's why I didn't come to the show is I thought, you know what this is, I don't know, that everybody needs to be part of this part of it.
Shannon The Dude
Mario would have some really good content of you running down the hall to the restroom every five.
Matt Jones
I don't know if everybody wants to see that now. When I went to the place, I was the youngest person in the building by 30 years. No, I mean, well, Ryan, you were there.
Ryan Lemond
I was the second youngest person.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it was. It was not. So. So when I saw that, my thought was, you know, we do need to tell people, like, if you're 45 to 50 years old, you need to do it right. Because it doesn't seem like to me, maybe a lot of people are doing it just by the thing that was there. But you should. You know, I had some of you write me. I had, like, three or four of you write me and say that you wish you had done it earlier. Because, like, they waited till they were in their 50s, and then they caught something that was more advanced, and that if they had done it earlier, they might have caught it. So I'm just here to say, like, everybody acts like Drew. It's the worst thing in the world. First of all, you get your best 20 minutes of sleep of your life. Like, they give you this thing called. What's it called? Loop prop a pol or something like that. They give you that. And I said to the woman that was doing it, she goes, all right, we're going to put. Give you the anesthesia in just a second. And I said, you know, sometimes it's really hard for me to fall asleep. And she said, I'm undefeated. And the next day. And the next thing I remember is waking up in a different room. So she is undefeated. It's. And then you wake up, and it's like, the best 20 minutes of sleep you ever had.
Drew Franklin
I'm actually looking forward to mine. I'll probably have one before the year's over. But did you take yours and put it on the fridge? Just have, like, a sticker that says.
Matt Jones
Like, when it's over. When it's over, they give you a picture.
Shannon The Dude
A picture.
Matt Jones
Actually, they give you 10 pictures. They give you your colon from every angle.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And, you know, you don't really see that part of you a lot. At least I don't. Maybe other people do.
Shannon The Dude
Your butt cheeks.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Well, here's what I was gonna say. I've got them. You can't embarrass me with the butt cheeks picture anymore. I got a whole nother level of it.
Shannon The Dude
Can I get an autograph copy?
Matt Jones
If you want. I will notice, though, when you. Other people aren't as excited to see that about you as you are. I don't know what. As I was looking at him, I was like, well, it looks good. It feels like. It feels like that's what looks like me. Yeah, it's me.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I recognize that.
Matt Jones
I could tell who I am in that one, but. But yeah. So I do highly recommend it. And I do want to thank Ryan because that was actually very nice. You know, Ryan comes in, he's got the smiling little face. He took me to get something to eat when it was over. It was very nice. But thank you very much for your help.
Ryan Lemond
Will you ask if you got a cheeseburger, went to the cookout, drive thru cheeseburger. Yep.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Why is everybody like that place so much? I mean, it's okay. Like for a reason. Yeah, I feel like that was. I should have picked a different place for my, for my first thing. But anyway, glad to get that done. Thank you to the, to the doctors there and it was worth it.
Ryan Lemond
There was one more thing. You, when you were going under your anesthesia, you told the lady it's not working. And he goes, you're almost.
Matt Jones
You said something like, I just told that story.
Ryan Lemond
No, you did. You, you left out the part where she said, you're almost done, you're almost there. I'm. I'm not asleep yet. And then she said, I'm almost there. And that's when you went out. Do you remember telling that story?
Matt Jones
I just told the story of what happened.
Ryan Lemond
Well, you didn't put that, that next line.
Matt Jones
But you weren't back there with me.
Ryan Lemond
No. You were telling me when I came to get you.
Matt Jones
Oh, okay. Well, I don't remember that part.
Ryan Lemond
Oh really?
Drew Franklin
I had to be there moment.
Matt Jones
Yeah. 859-280-2287 thanks to all of you who wrote me nice notes going into it and tomorrow if we lose it might be a post game show worse than the colonoscopy was for prep as we play South Carolina at home who is not won a game yet in the SEC. They're like oh and 8, 0 and 9. I'm not sure which 0 and 9 they come in here. I, I haven't seen. Have you seen a spread yet that'll come out probably right after the show, usually the afternoon. I've not seen a spread but I'm gonna guess what Kentucky by 1112, probably.
Drew Franklin
10 and a half.
Matt Jones
So yeah, so I mean it's probably going to be somewhere around there. You and I have been pretty good at guessing these. This is a Ryan, this is a can't lose game. I mean there's, you know like next week we play home Tennessee road Texas. You know, you could say, well I hope we win. But it's not the worst thing. You got to win this one. There's no scenario where you go into the rest of the season, at least for me, with confidence. If you lose this game, you've lost.
Ryan Lemond
What your last two home games, you've lost for your last five. You have to beat this team, the team that comes in limping in or the worst in the sec. And if you don't take care of business at home well then you've really got more issues than we think.
Matt Jones
Do I win this? I also look at it as, look right now teams 14, 15 and 16 in the SEC. At least Arkansas, Arkansas moved up but they were 14, 15 and 60. They were the only three teams in the or 15, 16, 17, 8, whatever it is. The bottom. I forget how many teams are in the conference now. The bottom three teams, the three teams that are projected to not go to the NCAA tournament. You have this weird schedule where you play them all at home. Well we've already lost one of them. We can't lose to a second one. You just can't. I mean you, you. Saturday is the must win game of.
Drew Franklin
All must win games and they've dropped the ball in this game the last two years. Kentucky was a 19 and a half point favorite in South Carolina. Came in a rope two years ago and beat him.
Matt Jones
That's still my, I think most embarrassing had I really do was two years.
Drew Franklin
Last year a double digit favorite there. Lamont Paris is actually 20 against Kentucky which is outrageous. And this team, I'm not trying to hype them up too much. They're dead last offense which is very good when the defensive struggles. But five of their nine losses to ranked teams were by a margin of three points. I mean they took Auburn to the wire.
Matt Jones
They had, they should have won the game.
Drew Franklin
They had a game in overtime. They took Alabama the wire.
Shannon The Dude
Florida was one point game.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Even though they've lost every game. They've been all of them in all of them but a few. So I mean they're bad but maybe not as bad as the record shows.
Matt Jones
Yeah, Shannon, but no excuse. We gotta win. I don't care how bad you An 0 and 9 team cannot come in here to rub and win if you're wanting to do something. You know I, I think Kentucky probably makes the tournament even if they only win their three home games against LSU, S.C. vandy, I don't want to what make the tournament that way but I actually think we would. But if you lose tomorrow now the possibility of not making the tournament is a real possibility and we just can't have.
Shannon The Dude
Tomorrow is one of those games where they have to get off to a great start and not fall behind if they get out to a good lead at halftime and just pour on, you know, push down the gas in the second half. Kentucky I think can win in a blowout but you don't want to leave South Carolina any chance to hang around because as we just talked about they can, they can Fight.
Matt Jones
And we can't, we can't stop anybody. So part of the thing is I don't want to get down into a one possession game here or there because we can't stop anybody. And, and we've got to have a big enough lead. It doesn't matter. There's also the fact, right, it's a noon start. Now we've played pretty well in these games in, in these noon games, but it is a noon start. You know, I think, I think losing the Arkansas game has taken a little bit of the wind out of the sails of this fan base a little bit. I don't get the sense the fan base is angry, but I also don't get the sense that the excitement is what it was a week ago. So I kind of think, Ryan, you gotta win this to get it amped up again. Then Tennessee comes in Tuesday. People will be excited for that because it's Tennessee, but not if we lose today. Like, you've got to win.
Ryan Lemond
I totally agree with you. Arkansas did kind of take the wind out of our fan base of sales. And then not just that they lost the other night, it's how they lost the other night down at Ole Miss. It's like those two losses combined does kind of seem to have affected our fan base and our attitude and our expectations. That's why you have to win tomorrow.
Matt Jones
Now with all that said, I feel good about it. I mean, I do feel like you mentioned South Carolina's last in offense. I mean, we pick a number we need to score, we score 76, 6. We win this game. I mean, I, I do think if you, if you play anywhere near your potential, I think we can have a bad offensive game and still win this game if we, if we do well.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I'm always afraid of my jinx since I'm on this historically cold streak right now. But they're not a good three point shooting team. No turnovers would have killed them. That's why they've lost a lot of the games. They had a game with 25 turnovers. So you're coming off just playing Ole Miss. That shot it well and had one turnover. Now's your chance. You've got the perfect opponent to match up with. You just have to go and get it done.
Matt Jones
Lamont Butler went back to non contact practice yesterday. That's a good news. I don't think he will play Saturday. I kind of don't think he'll play against Tennessee just because the physicality. But I think you might seem that next Saturday at Texas as the game there that he might get back. So that's good. I don't think he goes back to practice Ryan, unless he was going to play eventually. So I was glad to hear that.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, you're hearing these little things come out little by little. You know he worked out during the shoot around just Horny's conditioning run up and down the floor. He's at non contact drills yesterday. So these, these baby steps to get him ready when we really need him when March starts.
Drew Franklin
Their point guard just came back from an injury. He's only played four or five games but he averaged like 17 in those games back. So they're still not a good offensive threat. But at least he's a guy that.
Matt Jones
Can go, gotta win, gotta win, gotta win. That crowd tomorrow, I know it's not the most exciting but if you go in that stadium arena, do not let them lose like because this is one of those. I don't care if it's by one point or 25 points. We've got to win tomorrow. You cannot lose this one. Or for the first time all season making the tournament becomes a little shaky to happen. 859-280-2287. We are here at Kentucky Branded. We're going to talk about, I'm sure you all talked about yesterday but we got to talk about Mark Pope breaking things. There's a lot of stuff to get into. We'll be right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. 859-280-2287. Couple open a couple things. Tomorrow the bar will open at 9am for breakfast. We're serving breakfast before South Carolina. They're making it up today. I'm a huge fan of our breakfast. We only do it a handful of times a year but we're doing it tomorrow. Open up at 9am Our pregame show starts at 9:30. So if you want to come on your way to the game or just come by and then you can watch the, the game there starting at noon. But we'll open up the bar at nine so a couple hours early tomorrow. If we win the game which that we better win the game. If we win the game. I'll do the post game show from the bar as well. I'm, I'm, you know that's got to happen like if, if we don't then be looking for me somewhere else with a picture of my colon rolling around being upset.
Shannon The Dude
You brought this up a couple of times. Are you legit concerned that that might be a possibility that they Lose this game tomorrow.
Matt Jones
I'm only concerned to the extent that, you know, we just don't have a dude that makes sure we don't lose games like this like that. Like I felt like on the, you know, in the last 15 years, our great teams, there was a guy that I could say, okay, well even if we stink, this dude's gonna make sure we don't lose this game. We just don't have that guy. I mean, Jackson Robinson is about 80% that guy, but he's not a hundred percent that guy. And I'm not sure, you know, oh, way driving to the basket to force us to get a layup. I just don't know that that's the thing. And we can't stop people.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Matt Jones
So whenever you can't stop people, that hurts you too because you can't get that. I mean, even at Ole Miss we cut it to 11. You get a couple stops, maybe it's a game we just can't get the stop.
Drew Franklin
You know, the defense is like 90% of the worry. For me, I wasn't even down on the team after the Arkansas loss. I mean, I was down that they lost that game because of what was on the other side. But I still wasn't that disappointed in the basketball team. It's just they shot it well. That first half against Ole Miss, I was just like, what in the hell is this? People weren't even trying. And if they keep doing that, anybody can beat them.
Matt Jones
Yes, tonight, by the way, St. John's and UConn tonight at 8:00 on Fox. There are very few non sec games that I really look forward to. I think tonight will be pretty awesome. I mean, Rick Patino. If Patino wins tonight, Ryan, they could win the Big east, which is crazy. I mean, they probably need to win tonight, but if they win tonight, now he's on the road at UConn. That's going to be a crazy environment there. This will kind of be the best of college basketball tonight with St. John's and Yukon.
Ryan Lemond
I think you want to watch this game just because the potential of the fireworks with her. Danny Hurley kind of been mouthing the whole season and Rick bringing St. John's into UConn. I think this could really be an exciting game to watch.
Matt Jones
I'd like to see. You think Rick might punch Danny Hurley?
Shannon The Dude
I'd like to see that. Actually.
Matt Jones
Just a little 71 year old cross check there for Rick.
Shannon The Dude
Rick still looks. He's in great shape. He could probably do that. Who would you take in a Fight Rick or Dan Hurley. Hurley is though. He would just.
Matt Jones
Danny's got 25 years on him. Yeah, and I bet Danny, you know.
Shannon The Dude
But you got a starter, though.
Matt Jones
You got a mouth like Danny Hurley. You have to been hit in the face at some point in your life.
Shannon The Dude
With Patino, though, he's going to fight dirty. He's going to give you a low blow and he won't even give you a chance to get a.
Matt Jones
Here's the problem. Fight Patino. Yeah, I've been to a St. John's game since he's been there. There's some shady characters around Rick, like, you know, like the whole. I don't want to say he hangs out with the mafia, but there are dudes that look like they could have been extras in the Sopranos and all those St. John's games. I'd be very careful messing with Rick.
Shannon The Dude
They're donors.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Donors are the bada bing.
Matt Jones
I wouldn't want to trace where the cash is coming from for their nil tonight.
Drew Franklin
I'm actually going to root for Rick. It's the rare occasion where I hate the other team a whole lot more than anything. Oh, absolutely. I despise you guys. It's a good defense versus offense matchup too. It should just be a good game Overall.
Matt Jones
It should. 859-280-2287 here's my question for the fans. Are you still confident? You still feel that confidence about the team? Are you still like, not about Pope, I think 97% of people still are caught. But about this particular team, do you still have confidence? Who's up first?
Ryan Lemond
Got John up first, Joe.
Matt Jones
Go ahead, John. Rick's taking his time. Don't you worry about.
Shannon The Dude
It works.
Matt Jones
It is. Pay his own payment. Go ahead, John.
Caller John
Yeah. Hey.
Drew Franklin
Hey.
Caller John
I'm glad to hear you talk about the. I got a reverb back there. It's bothering me. I'm glad to hear that y'all are talking about this game being potentially a tough game. I looked it up. South Carolina 16 points away from being 5 and 4 in the conference with wins over Auburn, number of other ranked teams and possibly being ranked themselves. So I hope the BBN shows up. We just bought our tickets and we'll see y'all in the morning before the game.
Matt Jones
Yeah, well, please come by and. Yes, I. That's. You do have to be careful. But I also want to say this. I appreciate the call. If you're going to be good and you're going to do anything in the tournament, you got to beat the 0 and 9 team. I mean, they. Yes, they've. They were 16 points. They could be 5 and 4, but guess what? They haven't won any of them. So you got. You've got to make sure you're not the first one. They get the same thing with Arkansas last week. Yeah. You know, they lost close games, but you can't be the one to get them going hot. Looks like we've done that. Like, we can't be the one to get South Carolina to turn around.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, especially when it's just the style of play in the matchup. You won. They don't score a lot of points. They've got a big guy who's first in the SEC and field goal percentage. They have two guys that can go out and get double doubles, but really, just overall, they're. They're probably a little better than their record, but they're still just not a good team. So if you want Kentucky to be what Kentucky should be, this should absolutely be a win. Should be a big win, really.
Ryan Lemond
You can't come out like you did against Ole Miss. You do that, you're not gonna beat anybody. Man, they gotta get on it from the beginning of the game. They can't wait till.
Matt Jones
Why do you think this team has struggled starting so much all year? Because they really have. I mean, even when we were winning games, I mean, we fell behind against Duke, we fell behind against Gonzaga, we fell behind Florida, we fell behind a lot of these games. Like, why do you think we've done that?
Shannon The Dude
It's because the data hasn't been collected at that point. Yeah, but you gotta wait till after.
Drew Franklin
Collected the night before.
Matt Jones
You know what?
Shannon The Dude
We got a lot of data first time.
Matt Jones
There's a lot of data out there. I. Well, let's talk about Pope for a second. He was bleeding from his hand in his postgame press conference, and then it can't. He said he broke a lot of furniture, clearly broke enough to cut his. His wrist or the side of his hand. What'd you think of that?
Shannon The Dude
Glad to hear it.
Drew Franklin
Honestly, I mean, we love that he's so nice and does this stuff after games, and we compare him to Ted Lasso. But when your team's not playing well and it's an effort, toughness issue, they. They need someone to get up in them like that, sorry, Ole Miss to your furniture, but that had to happen. And it's good to know Pope has that in him when it gets to that point. He said in the. In his radio show when he got back, like, you know, this Isn't how I do it all the time, but sometimes you got to run white hot to let them know and get a point across.
Matt Jones
There was a couple people from BYU made a statement this week, Ryan, that he has a secret temper. That doesn't come out a lot, but when it does, it can be very, very strong. Did you ever see that in your days following him and working with him?
Ryan Lemond
Never, not one time that ever think he had that in it. He's always the happy, go lucky, fun loving guy on the court. But he's like I said yesterday, he's like a parent. You got to pick and choose when you do it. You can't do it all the time. It won't have its value effect. You got to do it the right moment. And I think they needed it that night.
Drew Franklin
And it probably comes with. He just wants it so bad here.
Matt Jones
Yes.
Drew Franklin
I mean, you just know how bad he wants it and to play like that and drop the ball. He knows how bad.
Matt Jones
I will say after the loss to Arkansas, there was a part of me that wanted to go up to him and go, hey, man, it's gonna be all right.
Drew Franklin
You're good.
Matt Jones
Like, there was. I'm not even his friend. And I was. There was a part of me going, hey, man, you know what? It's gonna be all right. We'll be okay. So I, he. You cannot say he doesn't care. I'm not sure I've seen a coach who cares more than he does. We'll take a break. 859-280-2287. Here at Kentucky Bran, it's KSR. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio here live. All right, listen, if we're gonna do this tomorrow, part of it is an energy thing and you all need to give it like the team. Let's try that again. Welcome back Kentucky Sports Radio. There we go. We need more of that. I just, I feel like a little bit. And this happens in February a lot. This is a normal thing because season's long. I feel like a little bit of like malaise coming over the fan base and a little bit partially nervousness, etc. I mean, part of it was how we were running so white hot on Saturday. I hope the fa. I mean, this is such a big game tomorrow and I. And we. And we can't lose it. I mean, we've got a lot of these other games. You've got some flexibility that you can't lose tomorrow. Drew. We just, we can't. And that worries me a little bit.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I'm wondering about that crowd. We've done it twice this year, but it was for two top five opponents. Florida was fifth, Alabama fourth. Of course, you can get up for those games at 11 and 12. You've also, I'm sure a lot of people have big Sunday plan with the Super Bowl. So I, I know it's not the logo that'll get you out of bed and get you fired up tomorrow, but the team's gonna need it if you're going to rup.
Matt Jones
We do. One person says, matt, I have confidence, but I need to see Pope substitute. Better to think we can make a run. Worried, you know, I, I'm not well, not to question the coach, but you know what? People are not emperors. You should be able to, to question them. I, you know, they asked Pope about, are you maybe playing your subs too much? And Shannon, he said the opposite. He goes, I actually want to play them more. I, I, I didn't like that.
Shannon The Dude
I didn't either. Let's get the starters more minutes.
Matt Jones
Yeah. He said, he said, you know, it's a thing you go back and forth on, but he's like, we survive on energy. And he seemed to suggest we were going to see even more of those guys. Ryan, I don't know. I mean, maybe, maybe he sees something I don't, but I don't know.
Ryan Lemond
I know, I know he's trying to save some minutes to keep the fatigue away, but it's February. I mean, we're a month away from March Madness start. I mean, it's time to go through your best guys. They're in condition, they're in shape. They don't need, I think, those extra minutes.
Matt Jones
One person said, matt, what is the percentage chance we don't make the tournament? I mean, I'd put it at less than 10, but it's not zero, right? It's not. I mean, it's not zero. The question is, I think you make it. If you just win South Carolina, lsu, Vanity at home, you don't go in excited. You're probably a 9, 10, 11 seed. Like, it's not great, but you're in. But you lose one of those games, and then it's a conversation at that point, then you start thinking, oh, no, we got to win a couple of these road games. We got to pull one off in the SEC tournament. Like, you know, that's, that's the, to me, that's the mindset. Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Looking at it with some recency bias, we're all very disappointed, but if you just put down all the Resumes on the table. Kentucky still has one of the best resumes right now. Now, if you drop the game on Saturday, talking on Sunday, and then that resume took a big hit. But I mean, they're still third in Quad one wins. I know we hated to lose to Arkansas, and it looked.
Matt Jones
Still has a. As a four.
Drew Franklin
I mean, Oxford sucked, but they're. You're still a four seed after that.
Shannon The Dude
You're four and five right now. If they go four and five again over the. You're eight and ten. You're eight and ten in the sec.
Matt Jones
You'Re in eight and ten is in. And seven, eleven probably is in. As crazy as that sounds, because of how good the league is this year, I will say if we're like a four seed, y'all better get ready to get in that car again, because guess where we'll end up if we're a four seed.
Shannon The Dude
Seattle.
Matt Jones
San Francisco.
Shannon The Dude
Oh, close.
Ryan Lemond
So, yeah, I'm pretty sure they have flights to San Francisco.
Matt Jones
You. I'm pretty sure you can pull out that wallet of yours and pay for them if you want a trip to San Francisco From Kentucky on 4th four days notice ain't the cheapest thing in the world.
Shannon The Dude
Housing's, like, the most expensive place on.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So, I mean, we're gonna spend the money on the hotel room. You just go. You get. You can buy your flight if you want. Who's. Who's up next?
Ryan Lemond
Taco is up next.
Matt Jones
Taco. How are you, Taco? Hey, buddy.
Caller Taco
I'm good.
Matt Jones
What's going on?
Caller Taco
I got a different take. I guess I agree with what Pope said. The only thing I. You're foreign. You've lost probably last five. Do you think there was an opportunity?
Matt Jones
Miss the opportunity.
Caller Taco
Maybe he should have started.
Matt Jones
Go ahead.
Caller Taco
As far as. Maybe if he starts Perry as soon as Butler's out and just let him play through. If you're four and five. Was Perry at the point? Everybody else is in their position. I think you're looking better coming out of this stretch.
Matt Jones
Yeah, but I don't know if we'd even be four and five. I mean, I. You know. You think we win at Tennessee with Travis Perry playing 30 minutes at point guard?
Caller Taco
I mean, I think it makes everybody else. They stay in their position. So they're better. They're stronger in their own position.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean, I actually think Jackson Robinson has played the point pretty well. I mean, I think Jackson Robinson's done a pretty good job. He scored over 20, I think, in every. Every game since Butler's been out I think the problem for me has been Kobe Braya can't make a shot. And when we go to our bench, we crash. I mean, remember we have starters. I appreciate the call. Take the Arkansas game. Our best players had a plus number. Amari. We lost by Arkansas to 10. Amari Williams is plus four. Otega away was, was well, Ortega's was a little low but Robinson was like plus one or plus two. And who am I missing? Mari Amari had plus. Amari was the highest. My point is our best players numbers were up. The problem was Garrison was minus 16. And those guys like it's when we went to the bench that we collapsed in that game. It was really wasn't the top guys.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I tried to close the book on that game completely, but it still haunts me a little bit of what could have been when they were up 18, 12 and he took those guys out because they were rolling. They were rolling and that's just everything fell off at that moment. You can't go back in time. But I do wonder if he had just stuck with his starters longer. Play your best players if that 18 to 12 could have turned to 20 something to 12.
Matt Jones
Let me flip for a second because in the second hour we're going to be doing basketball and I'm sure the Super Bowl. Mike Hartline was hired by Mark Stoops yesterday to be an offensive quality control assistant. If for people who don't know, his brother has done an amazing job at Ohio State and is now the new offensive coordinator at Ohio State. Ryan, do you like the Mike Hartline hire?
Ryan Lemond
I love it. I've always been a big Mike Hartline fan. His senior year at Kentucky he had a monster year. His numbers were as good as Jared Andre Woodson. I mean he really had a great season but people don't remember it because he got suspended for the bowl game. It kind of ended badly.
Matt Jones
Mike Hartline is definitely an example of somebody who suffers from the bias of comparison because you know, he came after Tim Couch, Jared Lorenzen, Andre Woodson, these guys, even Dusty Bonner that put up huge numbers then in your incomes. Heartline. He has a better season statistically than we've had since. But he gets compared to all the guys prior and he almost as looked like as a guy who was kind of a failure.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And he got suspended for the bowl game, which is the last thing people remember. But he was really good here.
Ryan Lemond
Really good.
Matt Jones
And if in the last two years we had had him as quarterback, we would have been good. And so I actually am Glad. And then it's clear, at least with his brother, his brother is shown to be a great offensive mind. If you're getting, you know, a third of that with Mike, I think it's a great hire.
Drew Franklin
Oh, it's great. He's been on a good path in his own career coaching also. I'm glad he landed here. And he's definitely one that history forgets a little bit how good he was. That throw to Randall Cobb to beat South Carolina is one of my favorite UK memories. We were losing our minds for that upset. And that's. That's one of a few big wins he had in that spot with really me had Cobb, but other than that, wasn't some great pieces around him that he was still playing well at quarterback.
Matt Jones
And I think it's nice to have, you know, you don't have to have 10 of them, Ryan, but it's nice to have one or two guys that are connected to the fabric of this program in it. You know, Schlarman was for a long time. I think there's some value in having a guy who has a connection here. You know, he didn't play for Stoops. He played before Stoops to get brought in. I think that's. I really was excited to see. I mean, does. Does it make a huge impact? I don't know, but I think having him around and having a young talent like that is good.
Ryan Lemond
I agree with you. You know, they had Drake. Jackson has been on the staff. I think when these recruits come in, they can't connect with them a little better because they played here, they lived it. They know what it means. Put on that jersey. So I think it definitely a great hire. While Coach Dubes.
Matt Jones
Who's next? Ed is up next. Ed. Go ahead, Ed.
Caller John
Hey, Matt, Got twos here for you.
Matt Jones
Go for it.
Caller John
I think it's not just. I. I think it's. It is important to win South Carolina, but also the way we win.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I don't care. I mean, I think that I get. It'd be nice to win going away or what, but, like, we just gotta win. If we win by one point on a shot at the buzzer, like, we just need those numbers to add up, at least in my opinion. Why do you think it matters how we win?
Caller John
Well, because if we win easily and consistently, we're on the right track.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I just want to win. I mean, I. I appreciate the call. I convincingly would be nice, but. But then, like, if we win convincingly, everybody's just gonna go, well, they stink. You know, for me it's just about us getting the W because we're what, 15 and seven. Like it's time to go 16 and we need that number to move from 15 to one higher at some point.
Shannon The Dude
I don't think you're going to get extra credit if you beat South Carolina 1 or 15.
Matt Jones
I mean the number, the numbers for us, the analytic numbers are going to be what they are which is we're top five offense, we're a horrible defense analytically and we got one of the hardest strength of schedules in the country. And Drew, nothing's going to change that probably for the rest of the year.
Drew Franklin
And if tomorrow ends up being a two point win, just remember as we said, Auburn, Alabama, there's a lot of teams that were happy to get out of that South Carolina game.
Matt Jones
With the victory lost, South Carolina was up. They South Carolina should have won that game. Kentucky Chambers working on an important issues Kentuckians are facing. All right, Shannon, I don't know what made me think this but this feels like a U topic.
Shannon The Dude
All right, hit me with it.
Matt Jones
Did you see the NFL had their awards last night and Josh Allen was named mvp. That was like one of the first times the MVP was kind of like who's gonna win? Normally, you know, last night you weren't sure but Josh Allen won. But the only thing he might talked about was Bill Belichick and his girlfriend. So Bill Belichick is 71 years old. His girlfriend is 25. Is that right?
Drew Franklin
Mid-20s?
Matt Jones
Yeah, yeah, 25. They came on the red carpet to walked on the red carpet and she looked, she was beautiful. She looked, was wearing like this crazy beautiful dress.
Shannon The Dude
Not much.
Matt Jones
And then he was Bill Belichick, he was flexing with his super bowl rings on his hand and he gave her one to wear. So he had like five on his hand and then she had one on and then Snoop Dogg made a joke. Snoop Dogg was Like, I'm so old, I can remember when. And he said, like, the Cowboys were good. And he said something else. And then he goes, and before Bill. Bill Belichick's girlfriend was even born, and everybody laughed. Ha ha, ha. Two things. First of all, like, if you're Belichick, like, what do you think about that? Like, you just like, because he's, he's. Everyone just makes fun of him constantly about this, but they probably also are like, nice job, Bill Belichick. But also, it's a little strange.
Shannon The Dude
What do you think they're all secretly jealous? Let me tell you, if I'm 71 and I can date a 25 year old, I don't care. You can make all the jokes that you want because I'm the one who gets the last laugh when I get to take her home at the end of the night.
Matt Jones
So, Sarah know that's how you feel?
Shannon The Dude
I don't know what. Wait till I get the 71. I'm still. I still got.
Matt Jones
I mean, she knows how you. She knows, you know, she knows how you feel right now. But like, in, in general, would that be something you would want? Like, would you say that to Sarah?
Shannon The Dude
We're just talking hypothetically. This is in theory. I will never coach the Patriots. I will never have, what, nine super bowl rings?
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Shannon The Dude
So I don't think we'll ever have.
Matt Jones
To worry about six.
Shannon The Dude
Well, he's got one. He had one on every finger. What were all those other rings?
Matt Jones
Well, I don't know. Oh, maybe. Oh, when he was the Giants defensive coordinator.
Shannon The Dude
Well, regardless. Yes. We're all talking hypothetical here, so that will never happen. So we don't have to worry about that. But great for Bill Belichick. My man is living his best life.
Matt Jones
Let me ask you a different question.
Shannon The Dude
Yes.
Matt Jones
Let's say you're that woman's dad. There's a decent chance Bill Belichick is older than you, Right?
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Matt Jones
No, I mean, there's a really good chance. I don't know how old her dad is, but my guess is she's. He's younger than Bill Belichick.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Ryan, you don't have a daughter, but you have sons. Let's say you had a daughter and she brings home a 71 year old man, but he's a very successful. Like your daughter could at some point inherit that very soon. Do you. Do you. Are you good?
Ryan Lemond
Okay. If we're going to play this out for real, you got to have a.
Matt Jones
Sit down your daughter and say, what?
Ryan Lemond
Are you happy? Does he make you happy? Is he good?
Matt Jones
Okay, let's just assume. She says, of course. Why would I be with this 71 year old man unless he made me happy?
Shannon The Dude
Money makes her very happy.
Ryan Lemond
And if I get that, if I get that from my daughter, I'm.
Matt Jones
You're gonna be good with it.
Ryan Lemond
I think you have to be. It's your daughter's life. She's 25 years old.
Matt Jones
So you think you'd just be like, what up?
Ryan Lemond
I, I think if he's good to her and she feels happy and feels safe.
Matt Jones
So what are you saying to Bill Belichick back?
Ryan Lemond
Good for you.
Matt Jones
Like, literally, she's saying, that's your daughter. That's your daughter.
Ryan Lemond
Oh, I'm still Dad?
Matt Jones
Yes.
Drew Franklin
Oh, my goodness.
Ryan Lemond
I thought I was just a regular guy.
Matt Jones
You can't look. It's your daughter. You can't look at him and go, good job.
Drew Franklin
Like, you.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, I, I think every.
Matt Jones
Okay, I would, but think about this for a minute. How were you? Like, how old is Gavin?
Ryan Lemond
He's 27.
Matt Jones
Okay, so you're what, 58. Okay, so you are 56 years old. Yeah. And your daughter brings somebody my mom's age, huh? You're not going to be like, I, I. You're just gonna be like, what up, Bill? Let's talk about Super Bowl 44.
Ryan Lemond
No, I think you. There's some serious conversations that have to go on, but I think.
Matt Jones
So let's hear that conversation. Let's act like I'm your daughter.
Ryan Lemond
All right.
Matt Jones
Sit here.
Drew Franklin
All right.
Matt Jones
All right. So. So tell me.
Shannon The Dude
I'll be.
Drew Franklin
Bill.
Matt Jones
I'm just here, dad, dating this man right here. I just want to make sure you're good with it.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. And Bill, can I talk to my daughter alone for a sec? Get your hands off my daughter.
Matt Jones
Okay. All right, dad. He's wonderful. He's 71. He's gonna die soon, and then I'll have like, all the money.
Shannon The Dude
He could still.
Ryan Lemond
What do you. What, what is your attraction to him? That's the first thing I want to know.
Matt Jones
He's so kind to me. Me. And he treats me better than anyone has. Yes, he's old, but no one has ever been nicer.
Ryan Lemond
Well, have you thought about that? If this progresses as he gets older, you will be his caretaker. You'll be taken care of like you're.
Matt Jones
We'll hire somebody. I'm not, I'm not wiping up him after it's over. We'll hire someone. And he said he will do that.
Ryan Lemond
Well, I want you to look me in the eye.
Matt Jones
I am.
Ryan Lemond
Does he make you happy?
Matt Jones
Yes.
Ryan Lemond
Do you love him?
Matt Jones
I mean, kinda, yeah.
Ryan Lemond
Well, I would. I would tread lightly then, until you feel like you really love him. And if you love him, I support you. I believe in you. I trust you to make the right decision.
Matt Jones
All right, well, there you go. Is that.
Shannon The Dude
And think about this. You're gonna be Bill Belichick's father in law, because.
Matt Jones
Yeah, all right. Well, I mean, I. I don't have a kid, so I can't say one way or the other. And, like, you know, it's just. It's an interesting visual. And the person I always think about is there. Will their dad be. Would their dad be okay?
Ryan Lemond
Now, I think here's why I would have a problem if she was 18 and he was 60. Maybe while she's still at my house. I think I might still have a problem then.
Matt Jones
That was being interesting. How would he date her if she was at your house?
Ryan Lemond
Well, she's a senior in high school.
Matt Jones
Well, yeah, she's a senior in high school.
Shannon The Dude
Do we know that she has a father in her life? Because I'm saying, like, maybe he's the father figure. Maybe that's part of the alone.
Ryan Lemond
She's dated older guys in the past. Like, that just kind of hurt.
Matt Jones
Well, I just think it would be weird if you're sitting. Like, if you're sitting there and Snoop Dogg is on stage making jokes. I think that has to obviously be strange, you know? What's the name of the guy that dates Selena Gomez? And at every Ward show, they just talk about how ugly he is.
Drew Franklin
Oh, yeah. From. He's on Dave.
Matt Jones
Benny Blanco.
Drew Franklin
Benny Blanco, Yeah.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So I was. I feel the same way for that guy. Like, he sits next to Selena Gomez, and at these shows, they're always like, man, Benny Blanco, you're ugly. And you got a hot woman for somebody so ugly. And I'm like, man, that's a little harsh on that guy, isn't it?
Shannon The Dude
A little bit. But again, but he's still dating. You can say what you want. At the end of the day, you're still dating Selena Gomez.
Drew Franklin
Okay, I think Ryan skipped one important part of that conversation with his daughter. Yeah, honey, let's have a conversation about prenups. You ain't signing one if you're gonna do this.
Matt Jones
Oh, I agree. If I represented the young woman, I'd be like, if you're gonna get into this, be very careful what you sign.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And then if you're Bill Belichick's kids, you know, your inheritance may be getting pushed off forever. Like it may be. You know, it's just got to be strange. That's all I'm saying. 859-280-2287. When we come back at some point during the second hour, Max Duffy's gonna stop by here. As I said last night, he's actually moving back to Australia. And I'm kind of I'll be honest with you, he's my friend. I'm kind of bummed about it. But he was gonna I think he's gonna come by and say bye to the big blue nation, and I think he's gonna come by here and do it. So he'll be here in the second hour. Then more of UK South Carolina. That all comes up here next on Kentucky Sports Radio Live.
