Nmlsconsumeraccess.Org welcome to hour two of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Drew Franklin
Welcome back our number two Kentucky Sports Radio 859-280-2287 KS Bar now open if you want to join us. Had a fun day here Saturday. Full crowd early in the morning before the game, then during the game and then when I did the postgame show after the game. Was a fun fun day in here and then Otega away had a signing yesterday. Mario documented a lot of the cute pictures. Nice job with the crowd coming out with no notice. I mean we didn't even, we didn't even know for sure he was coming until like 7:00 and then they changed the time at like 10:00 because we were supposed to be 2 to 3:30. Then Mark Pope called a Phil film session for 3:00. Normally he gives them Sundays off. He he called him in for a film session so we had to move it up to 1 o'clock so Otega could get to his film session. But normally they. Sundays off, they said, no, we need a film session, because we got Tennessee.
Ryan Lemon
And people still came. Lion was out the door before he started at 1:00, so they were excited to come meet him.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, I like it looked to be a very young crowd, too. I mean, the kids love coming out, meeting all the players. Like you said. Mario did a great job of capturing it all. But that when Otega walked in and that line was out the door, I knew he was in for a fun afternoon.
Drew Franklin
I was impressed. I mean, big shout out to UK fan base because, you know, one of the things is they wanted to do these signings, but they. They didn't want to announce it for a Sunday lose and then have people complain. So they were like, we're only doing them after we win, but that means there's, like, no time to promote it, really. And so to have that crowd with really no time promoting, big salute to everybody for that, for making the in Ortega seem to really enjoy it.
Shannon The Dude
And on Super Bowl Sunday, when people have a lot of plans and things to do.
Drew Franklin
We didn't mention, by the way, our commercial, the UK FCU commercial. So you had told me it was gonna be between the first and the second quarter.
Ryan Lemon
That's what we were told.
Drew Franklin
So I was. I was excited. We turned the tv, you know, we have it on, and then there we are, and we come on, and you spit directly in my face. Which is really nice to have a debut on, if not national television, at least local television, just with Ryan Lemon spinning directly in my face. You know, they use, like, cameras that make you look like a movie star. So I'm glad that I got to be movie star. Good. Getting spit in my face. But that was neat. I have to say, it was kind of cool to have a commercial on the Super Bowl. I mean, I know it wasn't. It's not quite Sydney Sweeney in the Harry Met Sally commercial. And I'm not on Bill Belichick's girlfriend's level, but nevertheless, it was still cool.
Ryan Lemon
I got to retell this story because you were a trooper that day, man. I'm telling you, you stepped up and took one for the team. I was supposed to just spit water on the floor, and then you said, let's do it again. I'll let him spit on me because you had to get, like, a red jacket on.
Drew Franklin
Well, I mean, I was like, if I'm gonna come out here and do this let's make it funny. And I was like, you know, if you're gonna have a spit take, having it go in your face is funnier than on the ground. So I was like, just, you know, it's not something I say a lot in my private life. Spit in my face. But I was like, you know what?
Shannon The Dude
Just especially the Ryan.
Drew Franklin
Definitely not to rhyme. But I was just like, you know what? Spit in my face. And. And. And. And it worked.
Ryan Lemon
You said, you got one take you're gonna do.
Drew Franklin
We're gonna do.
Ryan Lemon
I did.
Drew Franklin
I said, if you don't get this take, it's not happening. And then they did it.
Shannon The Dude
So you know what it is? So you got to do it for the bit. You're an actor. You channeled your Daniel Day Lewis. You got completely into the role and sacrifice that.
Drew Franklin
Everybody's got their thing. Daniel Day Lewis had my left foot Lincoln. I have a Sasquatch commercial with Kobe Braya and UK Federal Credit Union. Everybody has their sort of one that. That sticks out.
Shannon The Dude
Did you get sick after Ryan spit on you, though? Because, you know, sometimes he has these head colds and sun headaches and all the stuff he has going on.
Drew Franklin
Get sick. But that was like. It was like a week later. So I don't think. I don't. I don't think he did. He. He did that.
Ryan Lemon
Good performance behind the scenes. As soon as it happened, all the entire crew's like, it went in his mouth. That went in his mouth.
Drew Franklin
Another thing, Shannon, that I don't like to hear people just say, you know.
Matt Jones
I'm gonna isolate this audio.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. I mean, like, you don't need to be screaming. It went in his mouth everywhere.
Shannon The Dude
Now the screenshot.
Drew Franklin
So. So there was that. Now I have one more story I want to tell you that is non sports, and then we'll get back to Kentucky. I may have laughed harder yesterday, Drew, than I've laughed in a long time. So I went old school Lexington this weekend to restaurants like everybody always likes the hot new thing. Yeah, right. I. I went old school. I went to two of the oldest restaurants in the city. First I went to Paisanos out on Nicholsville Road. Yeah, I hadn't been there in 30 years. And I say this with love and reverence. They haven't changed the place at all.
Ryan Lemon
Since then and change it 30 years.
Drew Franklin
They haven't changed anything. Same rolling chairs.
Ryan Lemon
Wow.
Drew Franklin
Right? So food's good. They were a little understaffed, which, having done this restaurant, I've learned to kind of have sympathy for. Right. But Very old school. You know what I mean?
Ryan Lemon
Very old school.
Drew Franklin
Very old school. And the crowd, the crowd there looked like it was like casino night on a casino on the Mississippi River. Like, it was. It was like the buffet at 4:30. But you know what? Food was good.
Ryan Lemon
Food's usually good.
Drew Franklin
So I was glad I went. Then yesterday, my parents were in town and we went to Dudley's.
Ryan Lemon
Oh, wow.
Shannon The Dude
Okay.
Drew Franklin
You know, Dudley's is. Yeah, I love Dudley's. It's a very, like, old school Lexington thing. So Larry and I are sitting on one side of the table. Mom is in the booth, this poor server. All right, again, I don't blame her. She was doing the best she can. She's walking and she's walking behind us, and she gets about five feet behind us and I hear her, like, trip. And you know how you can hear plates fall?
Ryan Lemon
Oh, yeah, I hear it fall.
Drew Franklin
And then there's like a two second pause. And all of a sudden, two seconds later, I hear poop. And ketchup has flown through the air over top of me and landed directly on Larry's bald head.
Ryan Lemon
Oh, no.
Drew Franklin
He is. You have to understand, all of you that have seen, I Love Larry. Larry's 87 years old, but there is now ketchup on his pants. There is a, like a cupcake, a little blob of ketchup on the top of his bald head. Like on the peak of his head.
Shannon The Dude
Little dollop.
Drew Franklin
And a little dollop is hanging from his ear like an earring. Okay, now he sees it.
Shannon The Dude
Something about Larry.
Drew Franklin
It was there. Something about Larry. That's exactly right. He sees it on his pants and he's wiping up his pants. But I look at him on the top of his head and an earring of ketchup, which I don't think he can feel.
Ryan Lemon
You didn't know it.
Drew Franklin
And I fall on the ground. Like, I cannot stop laughing at poor ketchup head. He's sitting there with ketchup on his head and I, I, rather than cleaning him off, I just couldn't stop laughing. It was the funniest thing I'd ever seen. I then come, I clean him off. They're of course, mortified, right? Like, they're mortified. They feel awful. But I want to thank them because I will have the picture of Larry with his ketchup head. Like, literally, that is in my brain forever. Ryan. It was one of the. They ended up giving us free desserts, which they didn't have to do. I should have paid them for the ketchup. That was on the top of his head.
Ryan Lemon
Funny just hearing you tell the story. I can imagine you're sitting there beside. You didn't take a picture of him before you.
Drew Franklin
I wanted to, but I was like, I feel like that my mom would go, don't you post that. But I. But I couldn't. I couldn't help it with his little.
Ryan Lemon
I would love.
Shannon The Dude
I would love to see a photo of that. I went to Dudley's week ago too. I guess. I guess we're playing all the hits. I had a good time there. No catch up.
Drew Franklin
It's very good. People should. People should go there. All right. Tucking Tennessee tomorrow. How do you feel about it?
Shannon The Dude
Before South Carolina, I said four game win streak incoming. I'm sticking with it. I doubt Tennessee takes 45 three pointers this time around and clanks a fourth of them. That was very helpful in Knoxville. But I still like how Kentucky's getting back to full health. Assuming we have Jackson Robinson a little better off after that. After the game Saturday, had a big brace on his wrist.
Drew Franklin
I kind of didn't like. We put him back in because then he got hurt like one play later and he was holding his. I mean we were up 20 at that point. It felt like we could have, you know, because I worry about that. That's his shooting hand. Now he did make a couple three. So I feel like he's not, you know, he was clear. But I do what. That's something, you know, as a person with a wrist injury that can linger and we need it to not linger. So my view is, man, make sure we. Because we can't score what the amount we need to score without him putting in buckets. So I hope we. I hope we get that help.
Ryan Lemon
I was, I was worried about him. His first couple shots were short, you know, hit the front of the rim. Then he finally got on track and hit a couple. I'm like you me when I got about 20, just pull him out, just sit him down. No sense re injuring it. And then of course he did. Now last time we played Kentucky, we went down there, you know, really shorthanded. Didn't have Butler or Carr. Probably have our best win of the season to win down there without those two guys. Now you got. Now you got them back at full strength and you got him at home. You got to. As good as Tennessee's defense was, we still found a way to exploit it last time without Butler and Carr.
Drew Franklin
But do you think, like the fact we won down there makes it less likely we win here? I Mean, during Cal era, there was a couple years where we beat them there and they beat us here. It was like. It was odd. We kind of alternated. I think they did that with Florida this year. They beat them at Florida. Florida beat them in Knoxville. Do you worry about that at all?
Shannon The Dude
A little. Haven't swept them much with Barnes there and. But the recipe is going to be the same. Sag off and dare them to shoot. Hopefully it's as bad as it was the first trip down there, but that's what the game will come down to if Tennessee can take advantage of those threes.
Drew Franklin
It is worth noting that we beat them without Butler and Carr and we're going to have those guys and you got to think we have a better chance. Car specifically, I think, you know, can help with the matchup with their big guy, Igor or whatever his name is, because he gave us. He gave us problems down there. So I think Carr will be an extra. You know, that guy's slow, so it's got a guy. Carr I actually think can defend a little bit.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, he had a big game. Amari played well in that game too. Had a big double double. So hopefully he can run that back also. Just think the crowd will be a big part of it.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. So what about the crowd do you expect? I mean, we. Most of the time, these big games against big teams, we tend to play on Saturday. Our Auburn game coming up is on Saturday. This is a Tuesday night. You think the crowd will be ready to rock?
Ryan Lemon
I think we've seen it. They absolutely will bring it tomorrow night. You know, we've gotten lucky. None of those 9 o'clock Tuesday night games, which kind of maybe fans stay away from these 7:00 games. Man, the crowds have been absolutely fantastic so far.
Drew Franklin
I've had a lot of. I mean, the only 9 o'clock game on the schedule during the week is we play at Oklahoma at 9:00. But we've gotten very fortunate about having the games be seven.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah. And really just since the Pope era has started, Rupp has just been a different animal. It's been good for just about every game. This Saturday was awesome. I have no doubt they'll show up. Even though it's a Tuesday night. It's Tennessee. They'll want to be in there and pack it and be loud.
Drew Franklin
Now there's another big game, which is tonight. UK women are at Ole Miss. Now let me set up for you the UK women's thing here for a second. We've only lost one game in the conference this team is 20 and two. They're going to probably be ranked in the top ten this week.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
For the first time in a long time for UK women. They play adult Miss tonight. They. Their favorite. Kentucky should win. Ole Miss is good, though. But they can win. If they win, though, Thursday night is going to be one of the biggest. If we win, one of the biggest games we've ever had is here in Lexington. You know, South Carolina already has a loss in conference. LSU has a loss. Texas has a loss. So do we. But we play Texas here and we still play LSU here. Now we have to go to South Carolina. They're going to play Texas here. If we win tonight on Thursday night for first place in the SEC, it'll be the first time two top 10 teams have played each other in here in like, a decade. You have to go back to when Matthew Mitchell went against the Lawson at. Not Lawson. I'm sorry. Why do I always forget her name? No, it's South Carolina.
Shannon The Dude
Oh, Don.
Drew Franklin
Say Don Staley. When they. They had that game eight or nine years ago that I went to, they played on a Sunday and they were both top 10. This will be the last time I have a top 10 matchup. And we will probably have that here Thursday. But we got to win tonight to set that up.
Ryan Lemon
I think Kentucky's already announced it's a sellout for the Texas. Game's already sold out. I believe so.
Drew Franklin
Should be going.
Ryan Lemon
Yep.
Drew Franklin
I mean, like, that this is going to be one of the more exciting women's games that we've ever had at this school. I mean, it. Like, it's. Now you got to win tonight to set it up, but there's a chance Thursday night. Drew, you're talking about one of the elite environments and elite games that Kentucky has ever had for their women's program.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I said, Pat Summit. I remember a Tennessee game going to one over there when Matthew Mitchell was the coach and Summit was still the coach. And I mean it. You would have thought Memorial was Rupp arena, how rowdy it was. And it's only gotten better. The venue's gotten better with the remodel. I think it's going to be awesome in there. And tonight's game and that game are both nationally televised on espn, too. So if you can't make it.
Drew Franklin
Yes. For people who don't know, that game is on ESPN2 and the game Thursday night, I believe is on ESPN. I believe it.
Shannon The Dude
I think it's back to back ESPN2.
Drew Franklin
Back to back ESPN still, I mean.
Shannon The Dude
It'S on, it's on national TV.
Drew Franklin
So tonight let's all watch. But then Thursday, if we win tonight, we're doing a thing Thursday, sure. Like that. To me, what Kenny Brooks has done at UK is worthy of celebration. And Thursday night is the chance to do it because you're getting, I mean you, I didn't think we'd have a matchup like that here in a long, long time.
Ryan Lemon
You get that win, then you can really start dreaming about some special things going on.
Drew Franklin
Then they'll play LSU the next week and you're like, wow, we could win the sec.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
You know, I mean, that is if they can win these two games this week.
Shannon The Dude
If they win tonight, it's ties the best start in school history through 22 games just to show how well they're playing.
Drew Franklin
Unbelievable. Hey, bbn, if you're exercising more, being healthier, saving more money, those are good New Year's resolutions. But you also need to feel good. Matt Jones
Just replace his name with Larry.
Drew Franklin
You know, your knowledge of songs I hate for the people on the podcast, they can't hear it because it's always so dead on.
Ryan Lemon
Yep.
Drew Franklin
And like, I don't know, I, I do think we're allowed now, Shannon, to put Werewolves of London on there. Oh, I think so. As long, I think it has to be like 12 seconds or under but just on the intro. So.
Matt Jones
Okay, well that's news.
Drew Franklin
We're allowed to do that. I don't think we can do all the other stuff, but I do think we can do Werewolves of London.
Ryan Lemon
So Shannon, these musicians add so much to our show.
Drew Franklin
I hate that, I hate that. One of the things I hate for the podcast people, but it's like, you know, I mean it's all radio shows on podcast. It'll get, it'll get worked out someday like I heart and the music companies will reach some resolution, I'm sure. But for right now, we, we're have to get some band to just give us all their music. I don't know how we're going to be able to do that. The Texas game is not sold out, by the way.
Ryan Lemon
Not sold out.
Drew Franklin
So Thursday night, if you want to go. I mean, this is a top 10 women's matchup, and I'm sure it'll be sold out by game time. But if you want to go, there are tickets now for Thursday night. It's the next two games after that that are sold out, the two weekend games. But Thursday night against Texas, you still. There's still a handful of tickets left.
Shannon The Dude
They play Thursday and turn around. Play Sunday there, too.
Drew Franklin
Did someone tell me it's supposed to snow 8 inches tomorrow? When did that happen?
Ryan Lemon
3 to 8 inches. I think they're projecting starting this time tomorrow morning.
Drew Franklin
Like, who said that was okay? We played Tennessee tomorrow.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Shannon The Dude
I just know I got the snow out of my yard from the last one.
Drew Franklin
What is that? Well, now that. Not now that might make a difference. I'll tell you this, though. When it snows like that, the people.
Ryan Lemon
That go to the game, more into it.
Drew Franklin
More into it.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Shannon The Dude
They feel like they earned it.
Drew Franklin
I'm going to say this to all of you that are listening. If it gets. If we get 8 inches of snow and you can't come here, send me the tickets and let me give them away so that. That arena is loud. All right. I mean, I'll. I'll make sure I'll. Because there'll be people here who would walk to that game in Lexington. Don't let your seat go unsold because of the snow.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. Not for the Tennessee.
Drew Franklin
Not for the Tennessee game. If this were some other, like, you know, terrible game. That's different. But for Tennessee, we got to have a crowd in there.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah. This is big for SEC tournament seating, your place in the conference.
Drew Franklin
Listen, get the buy. We're going to be hovering most likely around 7, 8, 9, 10 in the SEC so that. So to get a buy and then not have to play five games in five days, which is what you would have to do, we got to win some. We got to win at least one this week to make that happen.
Shannon The Dude
You'd feel comfortable over Tennessee, though. You'd have the same record having with the tiebreaker there. And they still have tough games. This is big for the head to head with where you got some bad.
Drew Franklin
Luck because Ole Miss was about to lose to lsu and then they went and came back. Let's talk about those Saturday games for a minute. Clemson beats Duke.
Ryan Lemon
Yes. Dicky V's return.
Drew Franklin
We played both of them, so it really didn't matter.
Shannon The Dude
Cooper flag falling down.
Drew Franklin
Cooper flag is now falling down at the end of three games.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Do you. Is that just coincidence? Like, why is my man just. Does he just trip? Why does he have. Why does he have three fall downs at the end of three games?
Ryan Lemon
You got to think the fact that it's happened three times, it's something he's doing mentally. Like, he's not getting his feet set. When he tried to stop, make that jump stop, he just tried to move too fast, do too much.
Drew Franklin
This was like a banana peel fall. Like, this was like, like it. Like, it was like. Like that one was a wild one.
Shannon The Dude
As a cartoon. Looney Tunes fall right in the big moment. But I mean, the story of that game, I didn't care who won, was so good to see. Dicky V. That intro, that was not. I. I'll admit. Eyes got a little wet there a little bit. Watching Dicky V have his moment and.
Drew Franklin
He, you know, his voice is not as strong, but he's still got the energy, right? Like, he's still got the PT fear. Cooper flags a real thing, baby. And even though I can't stand Duke and, like, I don't, I, like, it's fitting he does Duke games because that's really his thing. You know, he loves to. He loves the whole Duke thing. Clemson, though. Shannon. I still love the dude on Clemson. Well, you. Wait a minute. You were at wrestling, so you didn't see it. The dude at Clemson that tore us up, that looks like just a regular guy. Schefter, Scheffler, Schefflin or whatever.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
How is that guy? Good? He. He. He tore Duke up, too. How is this dude that doesn't seem one bit athletic? He had 20 rebounds against us. How does he do it?
Shannon The Dude
He had double. Double against them, too.
Matt Jones
I remember that guy, though, when we were watching it. Yeah, the bar, the Clemson, Kentucky.
Drew Franklin
People say he looks like me with carrot tops, hair. That's what they say. But it's not. I don't think that's fair. But, like, how does he do it?
Shannon The Dude
I don't know. Such a YMCA game. And that was my first time watching Clemson since we. We lost to them. It was just a flashback to that with him and the guy, but it looks like he's 50. Back to a dark place.
Drew Franklin
That Clemson team is so ridiculous. Then you had Cal Perry in Arkansas. They were down to Alabama with six minutes left and ended up having a shot at the end to tie it. Big Z just decided to become Nowitzki.
Ryan Lemon
At The end, Big Z ended up with 24, 25 points. I think he hit four or five, three pointers.
Drew Franklin
Worst mustache I've ever seen.
Ryan Lemon
Big Z.
Drew Franklin
What? Someone tell me what is happening with Big Z's mustache. Did you see it?
Shannon The Dude
Oh, yeah.
Drew Franklin
I squinted.
Shannon The Dude
I had to squint. See it? Yeah, I saw it.
Drew Franklin
He looks like in, like, a British detective show, how there'll be just one guy with a little like. That is Z. That's the worst mustache I've ever seen.
Ryan Lemon
He shot the ball so well. I would keep it. Maybe that's, you know, a good luck charm for him.
Drew Franklin
He looks like he's, like, trying to change his identity for a party or something. Like, he'd be French.
Shannon The Dude
He's one of those long, like, cigarettes that are in the cigarette.
Drew Franklin
Weirdest mustaches I've ever seen in my life.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, but he was incredible. I mean, they would have gotten destroyed if he hadn't taken off in the second half. He was the entire offense that game. And it was a little hard to watch as someone who still loves Big Z.
Drew Franklin
Did you see yesterday when they told Hubie Brown goodbye?
Ryan Lemon
I missed it. I didn't see that.
Drew Franklin
91 years old. You know, I watched about the last quarter of that game, and, like, it's clear, like, his voice. He's. I can see why he's quitting, but his mind is still, like, he's seeing things on the court. And they kept showing highlights of him. And there were a couple things I thought were cool. One, he was like an old man, Pistol Pete. They showed him at, like, a basketball clinic. And he was on a basketball clinic, like, on the streets of New York. So he's surrounded, like, by all these young black kids. And he, at this time's like, 55, and he's throwing it between his head and between his legs and all, and they're going crazy. Also, you know, he coached the Kentucky Colonels.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
So a lot of the videos are from when he was then. And on. On his goodbye, he said, my two years with the Kentucky Colonel were the happiest two years of my life. That's awesome, because, you know, he won a title, I think, with them as well. And so he had the suit and the Colonels thing. So that was kind of neat as well.
Shannon The Dude
I liked all the players went and shook his hand. And there's a part where he says, can we pause for a moment while I have a tear? Like, you know, you could tell it's just getting to him for him to, like, say that out loud.
Drew Franklin
It was his whole life and to still even be trying at 91, to me, that's inspirational. Like when these old guys like Corso and Vital and Ub do it, it's easy for people to say, hey, just move on. But there's also something inspiring about a person that wants to keep going. Even if it's not great, they still want to do it. I love that about them. We'll take a break. Be right back. KSR TJ Smith, personal injury attorney. Call tj he'll make them pay.
Matt Jones
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Drew Franklin
Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio, 859-280-2287. Some text machine ones we've kind of been just talking. Let's go to their 772-774-5254. One person writes, Matt, do you still think it's inspiring when senators want to be a senator when they're 90 years old? Less so. I think those guys can step as I'm not saying they can't be in the workforce, but you know, some of these men and women like Mitch and Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Grassley and some of those man stepping, you know, we, y'all can keep going. I just, the announcers thing I think is probably that's a little different to me.
Ryan Lemon
You know, I think it was during the Clemson Duke game, Corey Alexander said he was telling giving his story about Hubie Brown. I said he would come out like an hour and a half, two hours before every game with the yellow notepad and write down notes for the game he was getting ready to call.
Drew Franklin
I tell you, when you get around like real professionals and you see what they do to prepare for the game, like, if you ever get a chance, if you're at a basketball game, walk by Tom Leach and look at his note.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
I mean, he's got this big card and it's got so much stuff on it. Like, so much stuff. And I'm not gonna when it comes to ESPN people, some of them have it and some of them don't. I'm not gonna say which one's which. But some of the ones I think that you see that you're always like, man, that person's always prepared. Go look at, look, go look at the, go look at the notes. Well, that's what I do for the show. Like, you gotta, you do the things. Like I have my list of topics. I have my super bowl topics. I have the reads that Ryan will forget to do. Like I've got All the things right here, they do that for play by play. And they have notes on each player. It's pretty impressive.
Shannon The Dude
And they'll go the extra mile and call a school and make sure they're pronouncing it. I can't even say the word pronunciation right. I remember even Freddie would do that for football games. And I thought that was so difficult.
Drew Franklin
Freddy's notes were unbelievable. Ready for just our pregame show would have crazy notes front and back of pages. Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
You know Tom Leach, I heard him tell a story one time. He learned how to get. Do his show prep from K. Wood.
Drew Franklin
Okay.
Ryan Lemon
He said Kwood was very meticulous in his show prep before he got into.
Drew Franklin
I think K. Wood kept all of his.
Ryan Lemon
Did he really?
Drew Franklin
And I want to say that back when the old UK museum was there, they had all of K. Wood's old prep cards. I don't know what happened when that museum. One of the real shames of Kentucky basketball is when that museum shut down, the stuff just got dispersed like. Like it. You know, they gave it to donors. Some people just came and got stuff and like the history of UK basketball just kind of got dispersed out into the world. And that's, that's, that's a little bit of a shame to me.
Shannon The Dude
If anyone's been to Kansas at the Fog, they have the museum you walk through. It's awesome. You see, like every year they have everything in there. And for Kentucky to have so much tradition, that's just in garages right now, that's not stuff you can recreate.
Drew Franklin
One person writes, matt, you talked about Kendrick Lamar saying it wasn't for us. Who do you think the NFL's demographic is? But that's the point. They don't do it for you because you're watching the game anyway. Right. The goal in the super bowl is to get people who don't normally watch the game. They know you're going to watch it because you care about the game. So what they're doing is they're putting a halftime show to get people who wouldn't otherwise watch the game. What do they care? If you're going to be watching the game anyway, then you're going to sit through it. Their goal is to get. It's the same reason Taylor Swift. They show her at the games. It's not because they think Bobby football fan likes Taylor Swift. They want little girls to tune in to the game hoping to see Taylor Swift. And that's like, that's the goal. So the halftime show, they not like us because it ain't for us. Right? Like, it's their. Like, he's doing it for somebody else. That's the point.
Shannon The Dude
And millions of people are watching. There's not an artist that everyone's going to like. Like, maybe you wanted Jason Aldean. Okay, well, everyone's going to go, why is Jason Aldean out there? Yeah.
Drew Franklin
A lot of people saying that. Like, why don't we get somebody? Everybody would, like, tell me who that is. Who is the person that could play the super bowl that every different group of people would like who exist?
Ryan Lemon
Dolly.
Drew Franklin
Dolly is the only one. I. I do think. But Willie. I love Willie, but Willie's kind of slow now. If you listen to Willie, like, it's not. I don't know if he could handle that. Dolly could. Dolly could get up there and start Dolean and. And then bring Beyonce on for a song and take, like. And those women might do it. Yeah, that could work.
Shannon The Dude
But even that. You have kids going, why is Dolly out here? You just can't please every demographic.
Drew Franklin
But she might be. The only person is Dolly Parton. And I don't know if they would give it to her. I'd be for it. But, like, people, like, think of a rock band. Like, what rock band is everybody going to want to hear?
Shannon The Dude
I think my. I liked Kendrick. My biggest complaint was it should have been Lil Wayne. Now, I know that's not gonna please everyone either, but he is.
Drew Franklin
Mr. New Orleans would pass out in three minutes.
Shannon The Dude
We should have had the big timers. And juvenile.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. I mean, listen, I. I would like that. But my question is, if you think Kendrick is gonna make the. Why would they, like, Juvenile and, like.
Shannon The Dude
You know, I'm not saying that's the answer, but my pick would have been that for the New Orleans ties.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, but. But still, that doesn't appeal to everyone. I saw a lot of people say Bruce Springsteen. I love Bruce Springsteen. You can go to a Bruce Springsteen concert, and you won't see one black person, not one. So that's not gonna work.
Shannon The Dude
And young people watch the super bowl and don't listen to Bruce Springsteen.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. I mean, when's the last time you were on a college campus all young people listening to Bruce Springsteen?
Ryan Lemon
Never.
Drew Franklin
I mean, you know, somebody suggested the Killers that that one song, everybody does know. But you could bring them only for that one song, because then who's gonna care about their other songs?
Shannon The Dude
I think part of that's what made some of the past better. Like, they'd bring guests of all kinds of genres. I wish Kendrick had worked in a few more people, even if it was still in hip hop. In the past, it seems like there's been seven or eight people joining the show, and it was just mostly him.
Drew Franklin
And I've got something that we don't normally do on here.
Ryan Lemon
Okay.
Drew Franklin
I'm going to give a Trump compliment.
Ryan Lemon
Okay.
Drew Franklin
By the way, there are 500 things that I keep my mouth shut about that I would complain, but I'm gonna give one comp.
Ryan Lemon
Roll the tape, Shannon.
Matt Jones
Okay. Marking the tape.
Drew Franklin
He announced last night, probably because he was bored, that he's getting rid of pennies.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
I've been on this train.
Ryan Lemon
Yep.
Drew Franklin
For a decade. I was anti penny before. It was cool.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, you were.
Drew Franklin
I hate penny. I've always hated pennies. And then I read one time that they cost, like, 1.1 cents to make and they're only worth a cent, which I'm not. I'm not a math major, but that strikes me as something that in and of itself should have made us get rid of pennies. That would be the only thing I needed to hear. And he says he's going to get rid of pennies. Great decision. Getting rid of pennies should have happened long ago. There's no reason to have it.
Ryan Lemon
I. I'm on the no penny train also. This is a good move by him. I'm okay. If he wants to go to nickels, then next year, just to slowly eliminate the coins that we don't need anymore.
Drew Franklin
You want to get rid of nickels, too?
Ryan Lemon
Why?
Drew Franklin
My mom just suggested Ray Charles for the halftime. Hasn't he been dead for, like, 20 years?
Matt Jones
Yeah. We can't dig him up.
Ryan Lemon
That would be a heck of a halftime.
Drew Franklin
I will say, mom, if they could get. If they could get Ray Charles back, I would watch that.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, Tupac, that would have been cool.
Drew Franklin
He's been dead for, like, 20 years.
Shannon The Dude
He died in 2004.
Drew Franklin
Okay.
Shannon The Dude
All right.
Drew Franklin
So let's. Let's.
Ryan Lemon
Maybe John Lennon can join him.
Shannon The Dude
Ray Charles. Tupac and John Lennon would have crushed it.
Drew Franklin
I would listen. Hologram back to the pennies. What is the argument for keeping them? Is there an argument? There can't. There can't be an argument for keeping.
Matt Jones
So then we gotta round everything up to the nearest nickel.
Drew Franklin
But that's fine. That's what I do.
Matt Jones
Anyway, when he says he's gonna get rid of pennies, though, I mean, there's millions of pennies out there.
Drew Franklin
No, they'll just stop making them. Yeah, they'll give you some option where you can Bring your pennies and turn them into nickels and dimes. And then they'll get rid of them. And then at some point they'll just. People will stop using them because they won't be taken any. Like there was a time in American history where they had a half cent piece.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
And now they're just gone. And that's what will ultimately happen to pennies as well.
Ryan Lemon
Nickels next year.
Drew Franklin
My mom just wrote RIP Ray Charles.
Shannon The Dude
Sorry you had to learn this way.
Drew Franklin
Karen. I'm sorry you had to learn that he's gone.
Ryan Lemon
I do want to mention one more Super Bowl. Thank you. Switch.
Drew Franklin
Okay.
Ryan Lemon
Former UK player Darian Canard has now won three Super Bowls in a row.
Drew Franklin
Think about this. Darian Canard becomes only the sixth player in NFL history to win three straight.
Ryan Lemon
Wow.
Drew Franklin
He is. You want to talk about trivia question nobody will get.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
There are only six players in NFL history who have won three straight Super Bowls, and Darian Canard is now one of them because he was on the Chiefs the last two years and he was on the Eagles this year.
Shannon The Dude
And his is the most impressive because he's only been in the league three years. Like, I mean, just every summer. Does he expect to win the super bowl now?
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Shannon The Dude
And if you're a team wanting to win the super bowl, you got to take a chance and try to go get him. I truck charm, by the way, I'm.
Drew Franklin
Also, I'm for the plastic straws, but people who keep saying he's going to get rid of paper straws, he can't do that. Like, we. I do want people to. I want y'all to do this for me. I don't care if you are the most deranged anti Trump person or the most pro Trump person. Take a moment in the next few days and read the Constitution so you at least understand what the power of each branch of government is. You as president can't just ban paper straws. Like, that's not in your powers. Right. You can't just shut down the Department of Education. That's not in the president's powers. He can say he's going to do it, but he can't do it. Congress has to do that. Now, he may do it, but then the Supreme Court's going to reverse him. So just whether you love him or you hate him, just read up on what the power of the they are not God. They have limits to what they're allowed to do. I just need to say that. But I am glad he's getting rid of Pennies. I do think he can do that, and that's a good decision.
Shannon The Dude
I did wonder, like, do people just storm into privately owned businesses and change their straws? I don't think he could do that.
Drew Franklin
Now he can say, we. He can make regulations that allow the continued use of plastic straws, which is probably what he'll do. But he can't just be like, if you get a paper straw, you're going to prison. That's not what the president does.
Ryan Lemon
I got one more I want to ask you about. I don't. You want to talk about.
Drew Franklin
Fine, I'll give you my answer as honest as I can.
Ryan Lemon
Wants to make Canada the 51st state.
Drew Franklin
Unless we're going to go back to imperial times where we invade people at gunpoint and make. You can't do that either. And let me. Why would Canada want to be the 51st of all? Canada's bigger than we are. They are. The idea that they would take all that land and go, you know what, Give us the same rights as Rhode Island. Like, if Canada did want to join the country, they'd probably demand to be like 10 or 15 states. They're not going to be one state.
Ryan Lemon
That's a hell of a state.
Drew Franklin
And we act like people in Canada just fell off the turnip truck. They have a pretty successful country, right?
Ryan Lemon
Yes.
Drew Franklin
You know, they have more oil and lumber than we do, so why would they just be like, yeah, we'll be like, Delaware. They're not gonna do that.
Shannon The Dude
We'll be number 51.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, they're not gonna do that. All right, tell me about Stockton.
Ryan Lemon
Oh, I gotta. I got it.
Drew Franklin
Of course he's. Of course he's ready.
Ryan Lemon
I had it ready.
Matt Jones
It's always a surprise.
Drew Franklin
He's always, always shocked at 11:44 every show, when I say, tell me about Stockton Mortgage. He always is like, is that something that happens?
Ryan Lemon
Oh, this is a good one. That'll be worth the wait. When people ask me who my favorite mortgage lender is, I tell them, hands down, Stockton asks you that.
Drew Franklin
In all seriousness, who comes up to you and asks you that?
Ryan Lemon
This nice man right here asked me that during the commercial break.
Drew Franklin
Okay. All right.
Ryan Lemon
When I think about mortgage lenders, the first lender that comes to my mind is Stockton Mortgage. Our friends over at Stockton Mortgage have teams of mortgage loan originators ready to help you find a new home loan that suits your needs. So give them a call or go online@stockton.com Stockton Mortgage NMLS 8259 Equal Housing Lender.
Drew Franklin
All right. We will take a break and be right back. We are here at the KS Bar and Grill. It's Kentucky sports radio. So Dolly could do it.
Ryan Lemon
Dolly could do it.
Drew Franklin
I mean, Dolly could do it. Like, she could do it in a perfect way because she could come out, do like Jolene with Beyonce, do nine to five, bring Taylor for a song.
Ryan Lemon
Maybe bring out like Miley Cyrus is her goddaughter.
Drew Franklin
My. There you go. And like, just have like. And they all would do it. Cause it's dog.
Ryan Lemon
Absolutely.
Drew Franklin
That's the only woman who could get all of those people to kind of play second fiddle.
Ryan Lemon
Absolutely.
Drew Franklin
Dolly is the one that could do it. So if I'm the Super bowl, that is one Ryan, I could. I could see you trying to make happen.
Ryan Lemon
And if there's the one person that could attract a large audience, young, old alike.
Drew Franklin
And the thing about Dolly, she. What's great about her is it's 2025, and in 2025, the sight of Taylor Swift makes some people boo. The sight of Kid Rock makes other people boo. And all this. Nobody's booing.
Ryan Lemon
Nobody's booing Dolly.
Drew Franklin
Nobody's booing Dolly. Like, you take the most Christian religious person deep in the hills of eastern Kentucky, they love Dolly. You take the gay community in New York City, they love Dolly. You go to black people, they love Dolly. You go to white people, they love Dolly. Like, that's an amazing trait she has. Like. Like, that's really. And it is. I don't know if there's anybody else in the. In America that has it. And that's really. That's kind of beautiful. So I'd love to see her do it.
Ryan Lemon
If there is even a remote possibility they should do it soon for. Too late.
Drew Franklin
I agree. I agree. Matter of fact, do it next year.
Ryan Lemon
Next year, just do it.
Drew Franklin
That's the time I think she needs.
Shannon The Dude
To bring out Snoop just to really, really.
Drew Franklin
She could hold that world there. I don't know if anybody wouldn't do it. Is there any musician that wouldn't go.
Ryan Lemon
Out there with her?
Drew Franklin
No, I think anybody would.
Ryan Lemon
Anybody.
Drew Franklin
Because they all love her. Like, because she's been around for. So. I mean, my grandma loved her. Like, there's a generation people that remember when she was on, what, the Kaz Walker show or whatever when she was 13 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Ryan Lemon
Really?
Drew Franklin
And now, you know, she's in her 70s and still does it. I don't mean to turn this into a Dolly show. I'm just saying I really like Dolly. All right. It's February and It's winter, and our friends at Cornbread Hemp can help you stay positive during these cold days. Drew Franklin
A couple more things to get to before we finish. Billy Gillespie is leaving or is being pushed out, it looks like, at Tarleton State. Probably going to be the. If you think about at the end of his coaching career, that's just my guess. Maybe get some with an assistant or somewhere or whatever. What's it going to be? Your final memory of Billy Gillespie? Beyond the sort of swim, American swimming pool, like, beyond all that. Like, what's it going to be?
Ryan Lemon
It's funny, you say that and the first thing pops in my head is him and Cutler running down the hallway. I don't know if that's going to be a memory forever. How I remember Billy Glenn.
Drew Franklin
Do you think you can. Finn, you can feel, like, fond of him. Like, is there. Are there any sort of positive feelings you can have about him at all, or is it just. Is it just gonna be negative?
Shannon The Dude
It's pretty negative. I'm not, like, you know, upset at him and I wouldn't boo if they brought him back, but that was the end of my college career. Like, I was at college for the end of Tubby in the Billy years. That was not a great run for someone who grew up wanting to go to UK to watch basketball. So got a little extra. Not anger, but just disappointed in how that. That all went, his health and, like. Yeah, you know, we mentioned it on a show recently. You know, he made the big donation to Dance Blue and cried a little bit. You know, he's got. He's got things that you can cheer for, but the basketball was just so bad and the stories around it.
Drew Franklin
I just find him to be kind of a tragic figure. Like. Like he was almost given so much that he couldn't handle it. I think there was a good person in there, but his demons made it hard. Like, I do think he genuinely cared about his players. He wanted this to work so much, but his personal demons, I think, overshadowed it. And I always find that a little bit tragic. I think he, like, loved his players so much that he oddly treated them poorly because he wanted them. And that's. I just, you know, Romel and Joe had a big impact on how I looked at Billy because they were like. It was almost like they were looking at their kid. When they were talking about him, they were like, I love Billy. He doesn't know what he's doing and he doesn't treat us well, but we know he loves us. And I always kind of found that because Ramel and Joe would take up for him.
Ryan Lemon
Ramel on this show has had great things to say about Billy Gillespie. And, you know, there's this story where he bought a car from some woman I think maybe was in Danville. He had heard a story.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. He heard a woman had, I want to say, had some sort of cancer and she was selling her car for, let's say, a thousand dollars. And he went and bought it for like 7,000.
Ryan Lemon
Right.
Drew Franklin
So that she would like, you know, and there's a good person in there, but he also did a lot of not good things, even thing. So I just kind of be kind of a tragic figure, but I tend to be like, I feel sorry for people. So I'm a little bit of a softy.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah. My cousin's a JUCO coach, won the national championship, and Billy was coaching Ranger was the other team, and they know each other a little bit from the JUCO ranks and speaks highly of them. It's just all the stuff that happened in Lexington is hard to turn off.
Drew Franklin
Looking back, I also want to say, if you get a chance, go on ksr. Today we have a long profile interview with Andrew Carr where he talks about the back issues he's had, but also his part. If you like Andrew Carr or if you just want to know more about him, Tyler did a great job with that. So go check it out on Kentucky sportsradio.com.
Shannon The Dude
Nothing else. Just for the old photos of him as a kid. He was a gymnast. Well, fun fact from the story.
Drew Franklin
He's got kind of a gymnast.
Shannon The Dude
Check that out.
Drew Franklin
All right, tomorrow we'll be back here at KS Bar 10 to 12. And then, of course, the Kentucky Tennessee game. I've already gotten some tickets to give away tomorrow.
Ryan Lemon
Have you really?
Drew Franklin
So we will see you later. It's been Kentucky Sports Radio.
