And yeah, tomorrow is, is Valentine's Day. Do you guys have big plans for your. For your various ladies or different ones for each one?
Ryan Lemon
I, I may or may not have already made it. Delivery this morning before the show. This morning.
Matt Jones
What was it?
Ryan Lemon
Well, she, she doesn't teach on Fridays, Valentine's Day tomorrow. So I took her some roses, dropped off at her school this morning.
Matt Jones
I thought she was a yoga teacher.
Ryan Lemon
Well, she teaches yoga and art for preschool students at a school.
Matt Jones
Oh, I've always assumed she taught yoga for adults. She teaches preschool yoga. Preschool kids can do yoga.
Ryan Lemon
They do two through five.
Matt Jones
Do they need to be that flexible at that age?
Ryan Lemon
Well, not flexible. Just, you know, the, the movement just kind of keeps them behavioral, keeps them calm.
Matt Jones
So she teaches preschool yoga?
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
If she ever needs a substitute teacher, I'm sure Matt would be great for that.
Yeah, I would be terrible at it. I, I do yoga, but not, not the pro. Not. Well, that was interesting. So was she happy when she got a rose?
Ryan Lemon
She was, yeah. I got some good texts. And then we're going to Rodney's tomorrow night for dinner.
Matt Jones
I could have guessed that. Rodney.
Drew Franklin
Minus 800 on draft.
Matt Jones
Last of the big spenders. Because I'm sure you have a gift card and it'll be free, so all Right. Well, that's nice. What about you, Drew?
Drew Franklin
I'm pretty prepared. I already got. I got a gift ready. Got a dinner res reservation for tomorrow. No, I'm gonna do a little Jeff. Ruby's probably need to find a card at some point. Yeah, I'm pretty set. Looking forward to it. It's nice that it's on a Friday.
Ryan Lemon
How about you?
Matt Jones
Well, see, I. I think I may go to Texas to go to the game. So I may be. I may be flying tomorrow. Yeah. Saturday. Huh? They play there Saturday night. Did you know that that's where the University of Texas is? So I'm back to going back to.
Drew Franklin
Austin for Valentine's Day.
Matt Jones
I know. You got to stop that. I haven't been there in like a year. You're gonna have to stop all your.
Ryan Lemon
We rekindled an old flame.
Matt Jones
There is no re. That's where Kentucky plays Saturday night in Austin's the first time. I think it's the first time they've played Texas there in my life. They played that regional there one time, the one where Patrick Sparks. The ball bounced around the rim. That was in awesome.
Ryan Lemon
I was down there. I was there.
Matt Jones
But I don't. I don't. I can't think of in my lifetime them playing at Texas.
Ryan Lemon
Basketball? No, no. Football, of course, was just down there for basketball. I don't know of any other games twice ever.
Drew Franklin
Once was just fairly recently and they played him in Rock and then played them in Maui.
Matt Jones
I think we were supposed to play them in Austin, the COVID year, and it got canceled. I think that was. I think that was our Big 12 game that year was at Texas, and I believe it got canceled due to Covid.
Ryan Lemon
Makes sense. They probably had a home. And home. They came here.
Matt Jones
They just canceled the one that was. That was there.
Ryan Lemon
Have fun down in Austin.
Matt Jones
Well, hopefully we win. That'll make it a lot more fun. But yeah, otherwise, you know, it's. It's one of those. It's. It's a Friday night. So I think for people, you know, it's like the restaurants, probably all the nice restaurants are gonna be hard to get into. Right?
Ryan Lemon
Well, you gotta get on early, like right after or after New Year's Eve. Boom. You gotta get on those Valentine's Day reservations.
Matt Jones
See. Who thinks about that?
Drew Franklin
I'm big reservation guy. I already have New Year's Eve reservations for next year.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, that's pretty impressive.
Drew Franklin
Well, I got tired of not having them, so I just get out in front of it.
Matt Jones
See, I. I'm the day of and if it's not there, then it was. Wasn't meant to be.
Drew Franklin
Like, that can be tough locally.
Ryan Lemon
After Thanksgiving, you better get on the New Year's reservations right then as soon as they open up.
Matt Jones
How do you all like going out so much to, like, restaurants? It just. I mean, I eat it out, I guess, every night.
Drew Franklin
What are you cooking?
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean, I guess I'm just saying you all like having, like, event restaurants.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. Make. Make the day special or the moment special for your significant other.
Matt Jones
Okay, well, let me tell you the other thing I'm so. I did two things last night that I think are very important. By the way, we're going to make this an Ask Anything Thursday just because again, we're kind of in between games and we didn't get to take a lot of questions last time because of a lot of stuff going on. So we'll make it an ask anything Thursday. 8, 5, 9 2, 2287. You can ask whatever you want. Old UK questions, KSR questions, or, you know, some good news potentially coming. Like, starting to hear some good vibes about this Nate Ament guy that was here Tuesday. So we could talk about any of those. But before we do, two things. One, last night I watched the best college basketball game I've seen a long time. And I. And I wouldn't have cared. It was Texas Tech and Arizona State.
Ryan Lemon
Really?
Matt Jones
Double overtime madness. Yeah, absolute madness. I'm sure none of you all watched it because you all have families and things to do. But, like, last 12 seconds of the game, tie game. Guy gets a steal, runs, looks like he has a wide open layup. Dude comes out of nowhere, blocks it. Everybody falls down. You know, there's. There's. There's screaming. A murder was took place like it was. They go into double overtime. The crowd in Lubbock is crazy. One of the best games I've seen. I'm not sure if anybody was watching it but me, because it was on the CB Sports network, but that was exciting.
Ryan Lemon
I wish I would have seen it. I watched Patino lose. Then I watched Caliperi win back to back. I didn't know this game was going on.
Matt Jones
And then the second thing is, I'm getting way too in to, like, ship culture. No, I'm serious. So I'm reading this book, the Wager, everybody. It's about this shipwreck, you know, in the 1700s. And it's. It's a. It's a great book, and it's a true story.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
You know, people who like nonfiction, like, you got to read this book. It's called the Wager. Came out last year, got a lot of awards. Like, I'm not the first person to discover it, but it's about this ship. And they. We told. We talked about all the. The phrases that came from it. I found another one.
Ryan Lemon
Okay.
Matt Jones
The phrase under the weather.
Ryan Lemon
Yes.
Matt Jones
When people would get typhus. That's a thing, right? Like typhoid. Typhoid fever. Yeah. They would get sick and the weather would hurt them, so they'd go under. Under the boat so that they could be under the weather to try to recover.
Ryan Lemon
That's where that came from.
Matt Jones
That's where that came from. But, okay, so they were trying to sail from England down. So Panama Canal is not there yet, right?
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
So they're trying to go under South America to get to the, like, Asia. Right. But apparently. And see, I didn't know this. The area under South America, that's Cape Horn, I believe is the name of it, is the most deadly seas in the world. Do you want to know why?
Ryan Lemon
Tell me why.
Matt Jones
See, maybe you won't care about this as much as I do, but I care. If you think about the globe, there's land that blocks water everywhere, Right?
Ryan Lemon
Right.
Matt Jones
But if you think about the southernmost part of the globe, it's the only part of the globe where there's no land to break the ocean and slow it down. So the ocean picks up speed because there's no land. Like, Europe's not there, and Asia, etc. So apparently, get down close to Antarctica. The waters. Then the way South America goes in, Antarctica comes up. It creates, like, a narrow path. Like, think of, like, when you're on a river, how it kind of.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
So then it, like, narrows in, which makes it go even faster. And then for reasons I don't understand, like, the most harsh weather in the world is down there anyway because of winds. So all these things happen to where. When you try to go under South America, it's the deadliest water. Even today. Like, ships are very scared to go there. Like, cruise ships have to do it a certain way. They can only go some seasons and stuff like that. So I'm reading about all this, and the guy's such a good writer. I feel like I'm on the ship, Right. Like, climbing up the. The mast or whatever to do the sails.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And then, like, disease breaks out, and then there's, like. They fight each other. And I just. It's a great book, and I. I realized I would have been terrible at it. Like, everything did you ever see Master and Commander, that movie with Russell Crowe? That's kind of what this is. I'm. I'm now basically a shipman.
Drew Franklin
Is that why people use the now America Canal so much? To cut through where they don't have to go down?
Matt Jones
No, that's why the Panama Canal was built, was to get ships from one side or the other without making them go all the way under South America. Because A, it's farther, but B, it's dangerous. I mean, they say over the years, hundreds of ships crashed in down there. It's. It. Cape Horn they call. It's like got some nickname, like the. The river of Death or something like that.
Ryan Lemon
Now I feel like I'm invested. Do they make it through the troubled waters?
Matt Jones
Well, I mean, if it was a safe, easy journey, I think the book would not have been written. Like, if it was just a normal. Like they just say. And I think they would have gone, that's not a very good book. If they were just saying. And then we sailed and then we got there. So I'm gonna assume there was danger. I haven't finished.
Ryan Lemon
Oh, okay. Gotcha.
Drew Franklin
I know why you like it, because when we went out on a boat, you took a book with you and read on the boat. So it's like combining your two.
Matt Jones
That's right. Apparently 60 Minutes went down there and rode the water last year like Anderson Cooper, and I haven't seen it yet. I'm awake. The books finished and showed how. How crazy.
Ryan Lemon
I don't know if I'd wanted to even do that.
Matt Jones
How about Anderson Cooper? Like, he's probably. He doesn't need to be doing that. You know, he.
Ryan Lemon
He's a. He's a pioneer.
Matt Jones
So do I give you. Does this give you any incentive to want to read it?
Ryan Lemon
A little bit. I'm kind of.
Matt Jones
So you're not gonna read it? Okay, true. What. Do you have any.
Drew Franklin
Of course. Well, I just bought Tomorrow Tomorrow and Tomorrow it gets here Today.
Matt Jones
That's fiction, though.
Drew Franklin
I know, but I mean, I've already taken one book recommendation this week. I just. I can't get too behind. But yeah, to your point, my. My sister actually got stuck at the bottom tip of South America because the weather. They had a plane down there and the wind was so bad it shattered the windshield. And they were down there for a long time. She wasn't on the water, but to your wind really going to the bad weather. She was down there for a while.
Matt Jones
If you read this book, you would think it's like they herman Melville, you know. Do you know who Herman Melville is?
Ryan Lemon
Heard of him?
Matt Jones
He wrote Moby Dick. Yeah, he called it hell on earth, that little straight. Yes.
Drew Franklin
So why would they call it the Wager? Because they're kind of gambling.
Matt Jones
No, that was the name of the ship. Okay, well, the ship was the wager. I think that's where they. Where they got it. So anyway, if you hear me, like start going our matey, it's because I'm become a shipment. 859-280-2287 Kentucky basketball we're still sort of happy about the win. Mark Pope. I. I was thinking about this yesterday, and we. I did that segment where we talked about why the fans had embraced Mark Pope so much. Now that we have our team and you go look back at when Pope got here and how he built that roster in a month, what would you grade the way he built the roster that we have, considering the time he had, etc.
Ryan Lemon
You got to give the guy an A. Maybe not an A plus, but I would give him a. Definitely a solid A for pulling that pieces together. Like he brought him in to fit his system and the guys that were available. He went and found us, which appears to be like maybe the perfect guys to fit his system how he wants to play.
Matt Jones
What about you, Drew?
Drew Franklin
Yeah, it's hard to not give him an A. You got to think he didn't have many relationships established. He played against some of these guys and knew them. But, you know, normally in recruiting, you spent a year or two trying to build this up. He had. He got the Kentucky job. Just started calling him up and what he had like five and five days in a stretch, and he got him really quick. He threw it together.
Matt Jones
First group, real quick. Who was the first? Now in hindsight, I'm trying to remember who were the first people to commit.
Drew Franklin
We. I thought it was really cool. Travis Perry, when he called him out at his press conference that set the tone early about bringing Kentucky.
Matt Jones
What about the transfers? Who was Amari the first one.
Drew Franklin
And Lamont Butler was pretty quick behind him, showing the importance for defense.
Ryan Lemon
Who's the one he flew to the Nashville airport and drove him here?
Matt Jones
Was that Andrew Carr? And let's think about just looking back, who he didn't get. He didn't get Chaz Lanier. It'd be nice to have him for. For depth, but I don't think, like, I mean, if I told you it was probably going to be Chaz Lanier or Jackson Robinson, they've been pretty close.
Drew Franklin
Wouldn't you Say I have to take Robinson.
Matt Jones
Yeah. And then he didn't get great osabor but great ossoboard. I don't. I've watched him a couple times. I. I don't know how great. I think Amari probably has been as good, if not better than great, than great Osbor.
Drew Franklin
So there's one I watched last night. Ryan, you watched the Villanova St. John's game. That Wooga poplar was high on Kentucky's list. They went kind of down to the wire. He ended up at Villanova. He had a great game last night.
Matt Jones
They tried to get the kid. Two kids that went to UConn. Liam McNeely, out of high school. You know, I was a high school player, and he's. He's really good. But it's interesting. The kid from St. Mary's that we wanted so much. Mahaney. I watched UConn play a couple nights. He doesn't play. He doesn't even get in. So, like, we were. We were all in on him, and he doesn't even get in the game. So it's interesting how, like, in the moment of these recruitments on transfers, you get so into wanting a guy, and I remember people telling me, that's the one we have to get, and he doesn't even play for you.
Ryan Lemon
You know, I've said this. We may look back in history that Mark Pope's best recruiting class, maybe this first one he just did, was able to do it the way he was able to do it. Got him a top 10 team that may be the most important recruiting class.
Matt Jones
Lamont Butler was huge. You know, Kobe Braya picked us over Duke and UConn. I mean, he could have gone anywhere. And he ends up picking here, Otega oa. I remember when he committed, like, no one said anything. We didn't know anything about the guy. And he's been our. He's our leading scorer. Yeah.
Drew Franklin
And I liked a lot of stuff was Pope. He had played against them. Brandon Garrison's career high before playing Tennessee the other night was against Pope and byu.
Matt Jones
I didn't know he.
Drew Franklin
He had been recruiting Kirk re. Year after year. Lamont Butler, he saw all the time. So a lot of it was he got his butt by some of these guys and went and called him to.
Matt Jones
See this year because he'll probably go get four or five guys in the portal this year. How he decides to get it be interesting. Do we just go get the guys we played? Like, can we go get that guy from Clemson? I feel like that dude.
Drew Franklin
That dude killed Us Josh Hubbard, Mississippi State. Come on over.
Matt Jones
Oh, dude, I love Josh Hubbard. I mean he. And he's destroyed us every time. 859-280-2287 is Ask Anything Thursday. You got. You got a Commodore Matt Jones. That's the leader of the entire group on.
Ryan Lemon
On the. On the ship.
Matt Jones
Captain Ryan Lemon.
Ryan Lemon
Okay.
Matt Jones
And Navy midshipman. Thank you. Drew Franklin. We'll take a break and be right back. It's ksr. This is Gordon Lightfoot. Right.
The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Wreck of the Edmonds Fitzgerald. Yeah. This is his only song I know besides Sunday.
Ryan Lemon
This is a true story also.
Matt Jones
It. Is it? Yeah, you.
Ryan Lemon
The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. It's a true story.
Matt Jones
Oh, well, how about that? That's good to know. By the way, you made a good point during the break. To me. YouTube TV. I don't know how many of you have YouTube TV. I have it. You have it?
Drew Franklin
Oh, I love it.
Matt Jones
And you have. Yes. CBS is off the air starting tomorrow. They. They're like in contract negotiations. So, you know, I'm okay with that now. Whatever. But if by March they don't have it, that's the end of me.
Ryan Lemon
Oh my. Gotta. Gotta work something out before then.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Gotta get it worked out because that game last night was on the CBS Sports Network. I don't care. YouTube TV. Get it fixed.
Drew Franklin
I don't watch much cable TV at all, but CBS is my channel. It's a YMT. Isn't that CBS?
Matt Jones
I watch that WS on. On CBS.
Drew Franklin
You like on Sunday mornings. How am I going to hear the trumpets?
Matt Jones
You're the only reason I know Jane Pauly is still alive. Is. Is. Is you all right? So I'm asking anything. Questions. Ready? Every time I say we're going to do this, this one guy asked the exact same question. So we'll just go for it. Can you ask Ryan what happened with Mickey Dubos at Kentucky? Now, remember, be careful.
Ryan Lemon
I. We've all heard stories.
Matt Jones
I want you to say it in a way that will not get us sued. Let's just say you personally. I absolve all responsibility.
Drew Franklin
I don't even know the story.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, I'm gonna. I'll just say there's allegedly now be to be careful. That's what I'm saying. Allegedly. She may have done some things that were not in accordance with what the UK women's head coach should be doing.
Matt Jones
Well, that's very vague.
Ryan Lemon
I think you could probably go.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I'll put it like this. I used to live over at Grand Reserve off Tate's Creek. And Man O war.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Good pool over there.
Ryan Lemon
It is.
Matt Jones
There was a Ramses in that shopping center.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
That was for many years when Kentucky women won a big game. The party was at Ramsey.
Ryan Lemon
Okay.
Matt Jones
I don't know why they went there, but they did. And it was quite a scene. It's different time in the UK women's basketball era. I'll just say. Just a different time. Different. Different time. Okay. And I think the old. I don't think Mickey DeMoss did anything, like, bad. But maybe some stuff happened in those situations that led to dismissals, and then there may be friendships, you know, but. But that's all I'm gonna say.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I feel like that's enough. It is one of those legends that people always wonder about. And it's. I. It's like with a Billy Gillespie, like, you don't know what's real and what's not. And that's what makes it hard.
Ryan Lemon
You know her.
Matt Jones
But she won here. I mean, she was a good coach here.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. She turned our program around and got them where they were competitive. But, you know, she went and said she was tired of coaching, she wanted to step away from coaching.
Matt Jones
What does she do now?
Ryan Lemon
Well, I think she's probably still in coaching. She went right back to coaching like, a year later.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Ryan Lemon
She said she wanted to step away and tired of coaching.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Well, I mean, she did a great job here. And I actually never heard that she was anything but a good. Like, a good person.
Ryan Lemon
I think she's really well liked by everybody at uk.
Matt Jones
Yeah. One person writes. Matt, is this the expression where around the horn comes from? Correct.
Ryan Lemon
It is.
Matt Jones
That's how you go around the horn. You're going around Cape Horn. See, I don't think we realized how much stuff we say comes from these things.
Drew Franklin
You've already given us, like, seven or eight.
Matt Jones
Just vocabulary. And that's just from this one, One book. Trent Noah, Jacob Polachek at KSR plus did a story that Trent Noah's Harlan County High School has not moved anything from his locker. It is still the way he left it. And if you go on KSR plus, you can see the picture. He has two. He has two shoes, which look to be mismatched to one shoe from two different pairs. He's got, like, his jersey, some T shirts. It's, like, messy. And Harlan High School county has decided to leave it the way he left it as a tribute to what he did for the program. I think that's actually amazingly cool. And the Picture to me is iconic.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, it's really cool. It's got some shoes, little ankle brace, some wadded up shirts. I love that they did it, but I'm wondering if they're hitting that with some Febreze every so often because I wonder how that will smell. Yeah, I mean it looks like he just got a workout in, took off his wet T shirt and threw it down. But it's. The gesture is awesome.
Matt Jones
Very neat.
Drew Franklin
I hope it's there forever.
Matt Jones
It's a great story from Jacob. And by the way, this gives me a good chance to say it's on KSR plus some. Every time we put one of those stories, people will go, oh, Matt, how's it like? First of all, I don't run that anymore. It's not my decision but to take up for them. The economics of the Internet have changed substantially in the last three years. Like when I ran the Internet. Well, I didn't run the Internet, but when I ran Kentucky Sports Radio you could put up free stories and Google Ads paid a lot and you could keep a website going. Free completely has changed thanks to AI and different things. Those Google Ads don't pay what they once did, which is why you're seeing these major news sources all go to subscriptions. So I've been committed to keeping and pushing on three to keep most of KSR free. And it still is. But if you're wondering why those articles exist, you know, don't blame me, blame the economy. Because it's changed. That's why you see free sites all going away. Because think about how many blogs existed 15 years ago. You can't make the money anymore, which is why. But. But we still keep 90 plus percent of our stuff free. But that's why that article's on.
Ryan Lemon
I want to go back to Trench locker. I love this. I love this story so much. And you can probably understand what I'm about to say. You know, a lot of these kids grow up in Harlan, man, it's a tough life. You know, they don't have a lot of revenue in a way to kind of pull themselves out of this life. And there's a guy right there, they walk the hallway with, they sit in the classroom with. That has done it. It means a lot to not just that community, but those kids that go to that school and see his locker every day.
Matt Jones
I genuinely believe that there is no county in the. In certainly in Kentucky, maybe in the United States, but I don't know the whole United States, but there is no county in Kentucky that has changed more than Harlan county in the last 50 years. Fifty years ago, Harlan county was an economic monster due to coal lynch, where Freddy's comes from Harlan, Cumberland. There were. There was a time like in 1920 where as many people lived in Harlan as they did in Lexington.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And then the town has. The county has had to go through so many struggles. No place in America has seen the loss of coal. Heard it more than Harlem. And to have that kid come from there, I just think it is so not. It's just such a great story for this state because if you've never been to Harlan, we go there with the Poke Salad festival. It's wonderful people but have had a very difficult time. You know, that scene in Netflix in. In the wrestler show is during that. And they tell that story. For that kid to come from that county and have success, I just can't think of anything more Kentucky basketball than that. I really can't. And that's what I love. We'll take a break. Take your questions right after this. KSR TJ Smith, personal injury attorney. Call tj. He'll make him pay.
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Welcome back. Techie Sports Radio. 859-280-2287. Coup baseball season starts tomorrow. Gets David Lipscomb.
Ryan Lemon
David Lipscomb.
Matt Jones
Yeah. You Kentucky's pick 15th out of 16 teams in the in the SEC. They did no respect with the two seed in the World Series last year. Picked 15th out of 16.
Ryan Lemon
I think it's about what they were predicted last year and look what happened.
Matt Jones
They had I will say this though. I maybe saw Nick Mingion back in October, November. I think I saw him at Chipotle. Said, hey man, had an awesome time falling. You missed out. Sorry. I was in Europe during the World Series. Hated I missed it. Looking forward to it. We're gonna go back again this year. Right. He goes a little bit of a rebuilding. So it was so I think maybe gonna be Drew a little bit of a rebuilding.
Drew Franklin
That's all right. Maybe they'll surprise us again. I had to unfortunately completely overhaul the roster, but I'm looking forward to it.
Matt Jones
Their.
Drew Franklin
Their opening day over here is Tuesday. I'll be at that one.
Matt Jones
Who they play Tuesday?
Drew Franklin
Morehead. Okay.
Matt Jones
Good.
Drew Franklin
Might be taking might be going a little Freddie Maggard.
Matt Jones
Freddie bought season two.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Big baseball guy.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
They've only got two guys back. Two regular.
Matt Jones
Well, I mean they basically loaded up for a huge run last year and I think they're kind of like in year One of two. Trying to do that again, so we'll see what happens. I also wanted to read you. Can I give you Alabama's basketball schedule for the rest of the year to give you a sense of the sec? Here's Alabama's schedule for the rest of the year. Auburn ranked 1 at Missouri ranked 21. Kentucky 15. Mississippi State 22. At Tennessee, 5. Florida 3 at Auburn, 1.
Ryan Lemon
My goodness.
Matt Jones
They play seven straight games to finish the season, all of which are against.
Ryan Lemon
Wow, that's amazing. I didn't realize that Alabama, a team we all think is one of the best teams in the country. That's a hell of a gauntlet for.
Matt Jones
Any team to go through seven ranked teams in seven games. That's got to be. If that's not a record, I'd like to know what is.
Drew Franklin
I mean, they could go four and three and be proud of that.
Matt Jones
They could be really good and go four and three in those games. All right, who's up first?
We'll start with Adam.
Adam. Go ahead, Adam.
F
Hey, guys, got a scenario for you on Ask Anything. So the scenario is each of you has a million dollars with the stipulation you have to bet it today. Okay, Kentucky is fully healthy, minus Creaser. Where does the season end? In the NCAA tournament.
Matt Jones
Million dollar bet. We're gonna take a fully healthy Kentucky team minus Creesa. Where do we say they go? I appreciate the call. If I had to do that, and let's say I had to get the round of the NCAA tournament, right? Not what I hope happens, but what actually would happen with a million dollars on the line, I'd have to see the odds, but I would say sweet 16 if I. If that was. If that was the bet I was going to make, sweet 16 with a fully healthy roster, that's where I would go. What about you?
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, I'm saying I don't know if they win the sweet 16, but to get to that game.
Matt Jones
Well, that's what I mean. That's where we would lose.
Ryan Lemon
I think that's. That's the smart money. That's where I would go also.
Matt Jones
I think if you tell me either Robinson or Butler is banged up and I'm going in like a little, not 100%, then I might go round two. But I think if you tell me they're all healthy, minus Crease, I'm going to go sweet 16.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. I want to be different just for the conversation, but that's what I was thinking too. Right now they're a three seed. You'd run into a Good team in the sweet 16. You know, the Kentucky fan of me is like, heck, yeah, let's win that one. But if I have a million on the line, that's a different conversation. So I'm going to say sweet 16 also.
Matt Jones
I also think it's going to be interesting. With the SEC tournament, I was looking at the standings. I think there's a very good chance that unless something crazy happens, we're either going to be the 7, the 8. If things didn't go well, the 9 or the 10, we're end up having to play Auburn or Alabama in the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament. Could be either one of them, depending on how their games against each other go. So that Friday at the SEC tournament, which by the way, the game will either be at one or seven, that's going to be a game for Kentucky. I mean, it's gonna be all of our crowd. I mean, that. That's like a national championship level game. In the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament, you either will see probably Auburn or Alabama against maybe Kentucky going into the season.
Ryan Lemon
My head, in my head, I want to see him get to the weekend of the SEC tournament. Now we see how tough the SEC is. I kind of got to tweak that a little bit.
Matt Jones
I think if we beat in Arkansas, we could get up to like a 6 or a 5. At which point then we could avoid those teams until the semifinals. If you just look at the standings, I think that's going to be hard to do unless we go on a huge run here at the end.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. I was talking with a friend last night. We just got a change our brains about the SEC tournament. We were so spoiled. We had that noon game on Friday for many years. But now Wednesday could have like three tournament teams in it. It's just a different beast.
Matt Jones
It's a very different beast. Yes. You guys already gone? You just got here. Well, you can't talk to me. I'm on the air. How could you talk to me if I was on the air? All right, good to see you.
Call them to call in right now. Yeah.
How did they think they were going to talk to me if I was on the air?
Drew Franklin
What did that one dude do that just walked in and went in that corner over there, then left.
Matt Jones
Just go over there and just pee.
Drew Franklin
I don't know what he did.
Matt Jones
Just walked in the farthest corner of the restaurant and then turned right back around and left.
Drew Franklin
Really no reason to go over there. What's going on?
Matt Jones
How did he think we were all going to talk? He knows we're on the air. Anyone who would want to come see me here would know we were on the air.
Drew Franklin
So we don't have Mario here to play security.
Matt Jones
All right, who's up next?
Tyler.
Tyler. Go ahead. Tyler. Hey, what's going on, Matt? First time, long time. Who are. What's up?
Drew Franklin
I was actually going to touch on.
F
That Texas Tech Arizona State game.
Ryan Lemon
I actually stayed up last night as.
Matt Jones
Well and finished that and I was kind of curious.
F
Do you think maybe that Pope would.
Matt Jones
Be interested in that topping kid? I mean he should be J.T. top. Yeah, I think they looked at him last year. I don't know how far it is that. Is that Jacobs?
Drew Franklin
No, I don't think there's a connection.
Matt Jones
I don't think he had 40 last night and he's a junior. I think so he's got like another year. That would be my. And again, I don't watch all the teams but my can we go steal him? Would be J.T. toppin. Now the thing is Texas Tech has some alum that's spending a ton of money on football and basketball, so they're able to kind of punch above their weight getting players. But I watch that kid. I appreciate the call. He's my random team star in 40 last night. JT Toppin.
Ryan Lemon
Knowing what we know the roster probably gonna look like. What do they need to get they.
Matt Jones
Okay, so it's a great question. Let's look at the roster next year. Let's assume we get away and Garrison back. I hope we get Kerr back. We'll see. But let's assume O way and Garrison come back. Let's assume we have Noah Perry back. Chandler probably Chandler. Then we got the. Not the four freshmen. So now we're at nine. I think you got to go get three or four guys. One thing you have to do is I think you have to get a point guard. We're going to have Jasper Johnson, but you need another option. Would you agree with that?
Drew Franklin
Yes. Can't just trust the freshman.
Matt Jones
We're going to have to go get a big yes of some sort. And then I think this is the thing this team needs the most next year, a big time wing score. We got to go get a Jackson Robinson. I think those are the three things. If I'm Pope, assuming the roster that we're talking about while I'll be here now, some of these guys could leave. You never know. But assuming the roster we have now, I think you need a point guard, a big time wing scorer and a big man of some Sort.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I mentioned this the day you're out, but Danny Wolf at Michigan, the center, he's perfect for Pope. I'm a little worried, though. The new draft boards have him up. He's first round now. I don't know that he'll be available, but he was high on my wish list earlier in the season because he just looks like a guy that would fit right in with the Pope system. He's 7 foot, can hit threes, can pass. He's high at my wish.
Matt Jones
Now, if Kirk Crease, that comes back. Kirk Crease, that might be that point guard, right. Because Jasper Johnson is going to play point guard. And I just think you need another option there to give you some grace in case his learning curve is a little bit.
Drew Franklin
With Pope's, a little bit of lack of defense. I hope they find more of a Butler type that can guard on the perimeter.
Matt Jones
Oh, way back is huge.
Ryan Lemon
Oh, yes.
Matt Jones
But you need a shooter, right? Like you need the Kobe bray. You need to go find somebody that's like that. And the reality is, I mean, he's going to have to look at like Colin Chandler and say, do I think this guy can become a player? Right. He does. I believe. Believe that. But he needs to next year because Eric's going to need him. I think.
Ryan Lemon
I think Travis and Trent will fill in role players again.
Matt Jones
But I think step up.
Ryan Lemon
I do too.
Matt Jones
I mean, maybe Trent, Noah is Kobe Bray. I mean that maybe that's who it ends up being.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I think they're counting on a big jump from him also. I just wonder, you know, we've heard former Kentucky players talk about how jealous they are. Pope system. I wonder what all these other kids in college that have eligibility left if they're looking at Kentucky. You're like, wow, that looks like a lot of fun. And maybe it will be what destination a lot of people want to go to.
Matt Jones
I've said this year, I thought we needed one star. I still look at next year and be like, we need one college star. Hopefully Jasper Malachi, you know, Kaden Lewis become. But we need one college star. Do you agree with that?
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
A transfer Chaz Lanier Kite, Jackson Robinson.
Ryan Lemon
Somebody that can go get us 20 on a night when we need to.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Clark's Puppet Shop has a new Clark's reward app. Download the app and get discounts on gas, stay up to date on specials and more. All good morning. Start at Clark's Pump and Shop. They have a cup of coffee. You love all the food they have there too. Don't You.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, they had a drive through. You can drive through. Looks like you do at McDonald's.
Matt Jones
They get to ditch the expensive coffee shops and stop in Clark's Pump and shop. And for fast food madness, avoid it with pizza. They got crispy, crunchy chicken, Cajun deli sandwiches and more. Go to Clark's Pumping Shop. Return, refresh, refuel. We will return here in just a minute at KS Bars. Kentucky Sports Radio welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio Here Live Text Machine 772-7745-2544 One Person Writes Matt, can you tell me what the schedule will be like at the SEC tournament for ksr? Well, depending on what the schedule is for for uk, it looks almost certain that UK will play on Thursday. I will make a game time decision on whether or not I think we're definitely going to win. If we, if I don't think we're definitely going to win, if I think it's closed, then we'll do our big show on Thursday and then just do a regular show Friday. If I think we're going to win, then we'll wait and do it Friday. Also, if the game's at 1 o'clock, we won't even have a full show because we'll get cut off for the official pregame. So we'll only have like an hour and a half. So we kind of have to wait and see what the schedule is. But chances are we'll probably do our big show on Thursday and then on Friday do a smaller show somewhere else. That's just my initial thinking because I don't want to wait. Do our big show Friday, we lose Thursday and then everybody's like, well why did we come here to stand and look at you if we're already out of the tournament?
Ryan Lemon
So, so I guess I gotta ask this. What if they end up playing on Wednesday? What would we do?
Matt Jones
I mean, we could end up playing on Wednesday. Yeah, I mean we're definitely gonna play on Thursday. Like, I mean unless something crazy happens, Kentucky fans got to know this, we're playing Thursday and let you know we'd have to come in fourth and we're not going to pass Auburn and Alabama and we're probably not going to pass Florida. So really our only chance is to get to fourth. So we're probably playing Thursday and then, you know, there's a chance we could play Friday. If we dropped our Wednesday, if we drop to ninth, we're playing Wednesday and.
Drew Franklin
That'S noon on Wednesday.
Matt Jones
I mean if we're in ninth place in the right now we're in eighth. If we finish ninth, we're playing 1:00 on Wednesday, which is crazy. There's never even been a 1 o'clock game on Wednesday and we might be in the first one.
Drew Franklin
So I guess we'd have to go Tuesday night because we drive.
Matt Jones
Yeah. We're also, if people are out there, we would like to find a place on the way to do a show. Assuming we don't play Wednesday, we'll do it Wednesday. So if you'd like to host us and just like some random place down there along the interstate, we do it Wednesday on the way to Nashville.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. We did what, five broke sisters that one day off the interstate. We did one in Franklin.
Drew Franklin
Last year was the football stadium.
Ryan Lemon
The football stadium, that's right.
Matt Jones
Yes. One person writes. Matt, I've only been listening for a year, so this may be a stupid question. That's what ask anything.
Ryan Lemon
Sure, there are questions.
Matt Jones
Who is Larry that you refer to? I can see how you might say that. So Larry is, is my stepdad. But I, you know, I consider him my dad. And we, he's the most wonderful person I know. And you all, all know him as well. But I do refer to him as Larry. So like some people might not realize.
Drew Franklin
That he plays a mean Bass, he's.
Matt Jones
87 years old, he goes on a stand up base and no more content happy person on the planet.
Ryan Lemon
What a great, great man. We should all aspire to be more like Larry Blondell.
Matt Jones
Larry Blondell. Think about this. Don't think he's ever had a drink of alcohol, never smoked a cigarette. I've never heard him use a cuss word in my entire life.
Ryan Lemon
He's a saint.
Matt Jones
Think about that. For how many people you think that applies to?
Ryan Lemon
Not many.
Drew Franklin
Ron saw that this morning.
Matt Jones
He did it on the drive here. So I don't think that.
Drew Franklin
Also good friends with World Wide Wes.
Matt Jones
Yes, Worldwide Wes. And here. Big buddies. So one person writes, Matt, I was looking at the NCAA tournament sites. I would like to hear each of you say what your thought would be if Kentucky got assigned to these towns. Okay.
Drew Franklin
I like this game. I'm excited.
Matt Jones
So Lexington has a site.
Ryan Lemon
They do.
Matt Jones
And we can't play there. So that gives us seven possibilities. Now because we're not one of the top seeds, we could go to any of these. We literally could go to any of these. So give me a quick thought on each of these towns. Let's start with you, Shannon. Raleigh, North Carolina.
I think we've been there before, have we not with Greensboro.
We were in Greensboro.
Yeah. Raleigh's okay. I'll be all right with that.
It's unlikely to me we get to Raleigh because I think Duke will be there. So I. I'd say Raleigh would be a surprise. But I lived in Raleigh. I would like that. What about you?
Ryan Lemon
Raleigh's kind of a cool little town now. Especially with the hockey team and the Durham Bulls right next door. So it's kind of a cool little town.
Matt Jones
The Carolina Hurricanes play at home the night before for the turn. So I actually would love to do that. But go ahead.
Drew Franklin
I was going to be a. No, you just talked me into that. I want to see some live hockey. So go Raleigh.
Matt Jones
Milwaukee. Shannon. No.
We. We have been there. Nothing in Milwaukee interest me.
So I actually really enjoy Milwaukee. I don't want to go be a little cold. But. What do you think about Milwaukee?
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. The weather in March scares me a little bit. About trip to Milwaukee.
Drew Franklin
Milwaukee might be number one on my list. I made my first Milwaukee trip a year or two ago and was surprised by how much fun I had.
Matt Jones
I've always had fun in Milwaukee. Every time I.
Drew Franklin
Beer and cheese. What's not to like?
Matt Jones
Denver. Shannon. We've been there many times. You always have quite a run when we go there.
I have a lot of fun in Denver. Let's run it back. I think that might be my top choice out of these.
I love Denver. The problem is we have to drive there and it's a long drive. But that's okay. I would. I love Denver.
Ryan Lemon
Denver's cool town. We need to go back to the witch house and you know we broke the curse.
Drew Franklin
I would happily go to Denver. I don't care about the drive. I love Denver. Got a brother in law there. Always had a good time in Denver.
Matt Jones
Closest one. Cleveland. Would you like to spend four days in Cleveland?
I've never been to Cleveland. That would be another top choice of mine.
Cleveland stinks. The only thing that would be good about Cleveland is that it's close but otherwise it stinks. You go to the Rock and Roll hall of Fame and then it's just like go visit. But we were there when we in 2015. We ended up going to the final four after we won in Cleveland.
Ryan Lemon
That's the famous story where you're doing your postgame show and Ashley Judd danced.
Matt Jones
On the table after we knocked the.
Ryan Lemon
Table over and all of our equipment and drinks and everything.
Drew Franklin
That casino there was good to me. Got it.
Matt Jones
Every.
Drew Franklin
Every night we were there I was winning.
Matt Jones
Let's go back to Cleveland, Witchita, Kansas. The worst.
If we go to Wichita, you guys go. I'm staying home.
No, you're going. You have to. It's part of the contract. Witch.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. This is the bottom of the eight. This is number eight on my book. For sure.
Drew Franklin
No. Even though they told us it's the best Sunday in America or whatever, what would they say? We're the best town on Sundays. That whatever that Uber driver told us. No thank you on Kansas.
Matt Jones
I love things like Wichita. Like, it's random. We'd have to make our fun. We'd find a way to do it. I'm pro. Wichita, Seattle. That's the one we don't want.
Ryan Lemon
No, that's all we're gonna.
Matt Jones
We're not driving back out there again. Are we picking up the wet sage from the Airbnb?
We won't drive. Then I'll have to talk. I heart into flying us out there and it's not a short flight and we've just been there, so I kind of hope we don't get Seattle, you.
Drew Franklin
Know, dead last for me. No, thank you.
Ryan Lemon
That's probably why we're gonna end up there, because we were just there.
Matt Jones
And then finally Providence, Rhode Island.
Ryan Lemon
I've never been. Never been.
Matt Jones
I don't have strong thoughts one way or another about Providence. Never been there before.
Drew Franklin
We'd have fun. I like the others a lot more, but it's high above Seattle.
Matt Jones
I think it would be like one of our trips, like Des Moines, where we don't know anything about the city and we end up just kind of having fun because what else is there to do there? We don't know anything about this place.
Drew Franklin
So I see Bryce Hopkins.
Matt Jones
I kind of feel like that would be oddly a lot of fun. Just like we had in Des Moines that one year. So that kind of drive we. Luna, by the way, looking at it, I was looking at the breakdown. The one I think is most likely is Den Denver. If you're just looking at where we are, I think Denver is probably the one that's most likely. Who's up next?
Let's go to Bruce.
Bruce, go ahead, Bruce.
F
Hey, guys. Appreciate you taking my call. I am originally from Lexington, but spent 20 years in the army and have settled in LA. That's not Los Angeles, that's lower Alabama. And I greatly appreciate the show. It keeps me up with the cats. Got a couple of things want to just mention I love Mountain Mamba for Trent, but I don't call him Trent. I call him Trench with a ch. Because, man, he is not afraid to get in there and go for them rebounds.
Matt Jones
That's true.
F
I love that. So.
Matt Jones
I like that. He does get in the trenches and. And fight. I saw Kentucky Branded has a Mountain Mamba T shirt coming out this weekend.
Ryan Lemon
Smart.
Matt Jones
That was what they needed to do and they made it happen.
Drew Franklin
Everybody jumping on board the Kentucky basketball official accounts been calling him that. Tom Leach. It's. It's his name. No changing it now.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I think that's his name. I hope he. I hope he enjoys it because that's what it's going to be the entire year.
Drew Franklin
I still have your Sweet Mountain angel baby T shirt, though, that I'm going to get to.
Matt Jones
You not calling a grown man Sweet Mountain Angel. It's just a T shirt. Not going to do it. It's not. It's not acceptable.
Drew Franklin
It's in my car. I'll get it during the break.
Matt Jones
I mean, I think, you know, people that are his mother's age, they can call him Sweet Mountain angel baby and really, they have to be women. And if. And they can do it. But men, no. Ryan.
Ryan Lemon
Mountain Mamba. That's got that manly tone to it. He's the Mountain Mamba.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I. I agree. 859-280-2287. We are here at KS Bar. One person writes. Matt, you guys would have a blast in Providence. There's a good craft. Bruce brewery scene.
Ryan Lemon
Okay, There we go.
Drew Franklin
IPAs.
Matt Jones
What's that going to do for me?
Get craft beer anywhere.
Craft. I'm with you, Shannon. Craft beer is the most beer right here in Kentucky. Country boy is good after that. It's like. It all tastes like. Well, I don't want to tell you what I think it tastes like. We'll take a break.
