This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome everyone, Kentucky Sports Radio Monday, February 24th. I met Jones here in Louisville, Kentucky. It is flag day in Mexico. So to all of our Mexican listeners, Happy Flag Day. We got Ryan Lemon and Drew Franklin are in Lexington. Shannon is in the room next door to me and you can give us a shout on the Clark's Pump phone line 859-280-2287. A Vision Auto Glass text machine is 772-774-5254. In this edition sponsored by the TJ Smith Law Office called TJ will make them pay. Shannon, I don't have that little video where I can see your face here.
Ryan Lemon
That I enjoy looking at Ryan's face right now.
Matt Jones
Oh, I, I can't see your face, but I. You can see Ryan's. That you got to switch that. I need to see you more than anything. Or let me see Ryan. That might actually make us. Can we do that?
Ryan Lemon
I'd have to come over there and. Yeah, the whole thing. Not during the show.
Matt Jones
Okay, well, at some point. 859-280-2287. Ryan, we lost to Alabama in a game where we were up by double digits and then gave up the lead. And then yesterday the women lost to LSU in a game they were up by double digits in the first half and lost the lead. But in the Alabama game, which is what we'll focus on at first. Great start. Up 20 to 9, I think even up at 1.30 to 18. And then all of a sudden, the offense just kind of stagnated, probably for about 10 minutes at the end of the second half. And you can't have any minutes against a team like Alabama where you don't score. And we ended up losing.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, my. My overall takeaway was that I was not really disappointed with the team at all. I thought their effort was really good. I thought their energy was really good. They came out and shot the ball really well. I just feel like really being shorthanded. Alabama is just a better team. I mean, I think Kentucky played pretty well, but Alabama is just. Just better.
Matt Jones
You know, we sat there on the pregame show and we said, all right, Drew, what's the number that we have to hit? And I think the number I said was 84, but I said, if we hit 84, they're going to have to miss shots, because I just didn't think there was any way we could score 95 to 100 with the team that we were putting on the floor. And what's interesting, though, is that I think they all pretty much. Drew hit the moment, like, the amount of points that they needed, except away. And we just. I mean, I think always over. Under was 21 and he had two. And honestly, without getting production from him, we just didn't have enough offensive firepower.
Caller
Yeah, they just needed more from away. If he could have gotten double digits, you're in it. And then Travis Perry's, what, one for five from three. He played a decent game, but if he could have just gotten some threes to go, Trent Noah missing all those two, you're in it. But for me, I went into that game thinking, I'm emotionless. This is house money. They're probably going to lose.
Matt Jones
Who cares?
Caller
It won't affect the seating. We learned today they only dropped one spot. There's still a three seed. They went from 11 to 12. So it really didn't hurt you. But then at the end, I found myself, you know, beat up because they had a chance. So even though I thought I wouldn't get to that point, I was still pretty disappointed in how it all played out in the end.
Matt Jones
I thought I was so, like, this is a house money game, Ryan, that I didn't even get nervous watching it. Like, I went to the. I went to the turkey hunter's house. Had. I was. I was in a group of people watching the game, like 12 people. I just thought, well, we're not going to win. Who cares? And then all of a sudden, you're up 30 to 18 and you go, well now wait a minute, you know, get back on defense. Come on Brandon Garrison. Then all of a sudden I'm right back to what I mean in a regular game. Because even though on paper winning at Alabama might be the hardest game you play all year, you know, for a while we look like we could play with them and then it just kind of collapsed.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I think you're right. I think it probably was overall their hardest game of the season. Going to Alabama and play them. Coming off a two game losing streak, I knew they would be playing, they'd play well. Well, Wake Kentucky came out, started shooting the basketball. I think we all did get sucked in there for a little bit. Like, hey man, we can do this. We've beat good teams on the road before, so why can't we do it tonight?
Matt Jones
We just got, we, we just, you know, we just don't have enough scoring. And, and, and you can go, well, how do you talk about scoring when they scored 96? I mean Dr. I don't know about you, I'm kind of giving up on our defense against good offensive teams. I think our defense has improved enough that we don't have to like give up 85 to chump teams. But against Alabama, Auburn, Florida, you know, whatever. I'm just going to assume those teams are going to score a lot of points and then the question is, are we healthy enough to stay with them? And we're just, I just don't think we're just not healthy enough. We don't have, you know, you got the amount of points you wanted from Kobe. Braya, you got the amount of points you wanted from Amari Williams, you got the amount you wanted from Carr. Heck, you got, we said on the pregame show 15 from the freshman, we got it, we got the 15, but we just didn't get the away points and didn't get the almond or points. And I think ultimately maybe Drew, that's the difference.
Caller
Yeah, you don't want to put it all on away, but as your team's leading score this year to have two, that was, that was pretty big hit. And Fallon out, he was just never really in the game. He had the bad play where got swiped and went the other way for a dunk. I think it was a four point game at that point. Also thought my key to the game was stopping Grant Nelson. He had five points. I mean I thought they did a Good job. The 96 looks bad and you want to get disappointed, but Alabama's number one in the country. They average 91, 92 a game. So I mean, that's kind of what Alabama, Kentucky, Kentucky just needed a little more to hang with them and came up short in a few areas.
Matt Jones
So, you know, now a lot of the talk after the game was on the post game show Ryan. I was amazed after a 13 point loss how much of the chatter was officiating. People really, really, really, really didn't like the officiating. I even commented at one point during the game that I thought it was a really poorly officiated game. And the calls, I think went a little bit for Alabama, maybe 65, 35 Alabama in terms of how I think it. But at the same time, the free throws between the two team Shannon was about the same. Yeah, the. The foul calls, they were. We were called for three more, I think, than they were. So, I mean, it was basically about the same. I think there were some egregious bad ones. But I do think Shannon that Terry Oglesby. I've always said this. When you know a ref's name, it's never a good sign. And him following Caliperi or Caliper. Excuse me, Pope down. I'm used to refs falling, Caliperi, him following Mark Pope down the sideline to stare at him. I thought, like, is something that should get an official find by the sec. Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
Walking them all the way back down.
Matt Jones
To the bench, staring at him, waiting for him to say something. He wanted him to say something.
Ryan Lemon
I saw Pope staring a couple of times too, though. He kind of gave that tubby Smith stare.
Matt Jones
But did he yell?
Ryan Lemon
He didn't. I thought. I thought maybe at one point, though, that was where he's going to get.
Matt Jones
Officials are supposed to be better.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Like Ryan. To me, officials are like police, right. We give police respect because. And they get power because we have to have somebody like that. But in exchange, I hold police to a higher standard than the average citizen because of the power that we give them. Similarly, I think referees should act. Coaches act fools, but we give referees this power to make calls in games. And so referees should have a higher standard of behavior than coaches. So if a coach wants to stare down a ref, I'm all right with it. But a ref can't stare down a coach because they're on a higher plane of power in that game. And that's why I thought his behavior was so bad.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, he really. I thought. I felt like he was just trying to bait Pope. He was trying to bait him into saying something so he could team up. You remember a couple well, several years ago that the ref stepped up to Scott Padgett and Scott Padgett, 611. Like, are you stepping up to me right now? I think. Yeah. I don't know what gives refs the.
Matt Jones
The mark Pope is a foot taller than that guy.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, true.
Matt Jones
You know, I just. I didn't like. So I didn't like that. Now, I do not think. Drew. We lost the game because he officiated. I was surprised how many of our fans were taking that view. I'll ask you, Drew, You. You get. You get emotional about officials. I'm not saying I don't, but you do. We ended up on a lawsuit about it. Do you. What role do you think the officials had?
Caller
Um, I mean, I thought it was pretty terrible. I don't think it changed the game. And you know, Mark Sears, that's how he plays. He does that Trey Young, like, throw his head back as soon as he drives to draw fouls. He's done that forever. He does.
Matt Jones
He's good at.
Caller
He's good at it. Unfortunately, that night, they called them all.
Matt Jones
Really.
Caller
I had the biggest problem, what you just said that walking Pope down because Pope was basically standing in the far corner and he stopped play to chase Pope down to stare at him. And then the one. Another one that really upset me is we get Travis Perry going to the rim early in the game, and he got absolutely hammered. It spun him around on that one. So I was pretty. I was fired up about some particular fouls, but overall, that's just kind of what Sears does. And they were blowing the whistle every time, but there were a few that I was furious about.
Matt Jones
Mark Sears is. Mark Sears is a grade A all American foul getter. Okay. He is a grade A throw yourself into a guy, Shannon, and get a call. He's as good as. He's as good as they get at that.
Ryan Lemon
Yep.
Matt Jones
I was thinking, who is. Who are the Kentucky guys that have been good at that? Ryan, think of it. Who. Who. Who are Kentucky guys that were really good at. At drawing fouls? I know. We've had them.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Wall was. Wall was good at it. Wall drew. Wall would draw a lot of fouls.
Drew Franklin
It seemed like Shade. It was pretty good.
Matt Jones
Shay is a good call because Shea was long enough. He could take the hit and still finish away this year.
Ryan Lemon
Isn't bad at it. I mean, I think he gets to the line quite a bit.
Matt Jones
He does, but he also gets blocked a lot.
Caller
Tyler Eulis's second season. He could get in the lane. And even though you Know, half the size of everyone. He'd put his body in and extend his arm out and throw that layup and he would draw fouls.
Matt Jones
Yeah, but Sears is great at Sears.
Drew Franklin
Good.
Matt Jones
Sears is great at it. So to some extent, the referees are going to fall for that because he's.
Drew Franklin
Good at it and he's an 80% free throw shooter.
Matt Jones
It feels like they shot free throws really well. I don't know what their percentage.
Caller
85%.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, but when you play like 11 for 11, when you play like that, you force the refs to make that call.
Matt Jones
You do. That's what I've been saying all year about we got to go into bodies now. I mean, Drew's right. Like, when Travis Perry does that and doesn't get a call, it's frustrating. But, you know, both Mark Popes and Kenny Brooks after the game ride and said yesterday, I still don't know what a foul is in the sec. They both said that yesterday or in their games this weekend.
Drew Franklin
Well, I heard your postgame show and I heard the callers and I heard even you got a little. A little tense, you know, clapping back at the call.
Matt Jones
I got tense. I don't get tense.
Drew Franklin
Well, what's the right word there? You got a little spicy. Tight. Spicy. Spicy is a good word.
Matt Jones
I was being spicy.
Drew Franklin
Little spicy. Yeah. I'm glad your mom. Didn't your mom text you? Said, hey, you need to calm down.
Matt Jones
She didn't say, you need to calm down. Okay. She said. She said you sound. What was it? She said something like, you sound frustrated.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, but to be honest, I was with you.
Matt Jones
She said, calm down.
Drew Franklin
I was with you. The callers I thought were a little over the top.
Matt Jones
Yeah. She wrote you seem frustrated.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, well, you definitely seem frustrated.
Matt Jones
I feel like when you. I don't want. I don't want our fan base to be the boy who cries wolf. Shannon. Right?
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Like if. If every. I mean, we lost by 13, and if every game it's the ref's fault, then when it is the ref's fault, no one's going to listen to it. Right.
Ryan Lemon
Because you hear all the time Kentucky fans complaining about, complaining about the fact all the time. I mean, you go to the comment section on social media after any loss is always somebody blaming the refs. Doesn't matter.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So all overall we knew. I mean, all year I thought this was the game. This was a game we weren't going to win. So it's not a huge deal. Now we play Oklahoma Wednesday, and that's a bigger Deal. And so the question is, what's going to happen with Butler and Robinson? I have drew scuttlebutt update on both.
Caller
Okay, we like that.
Matt Jones
Scuttlebutt from the ships of the bri of the British Admiral Age scuttlebutt update. And we will take your calls. Open lines Are you just not gonna answer the one call you just don't want to answer that guy's call. Shannon, I see that he keeps ringing. You just don't want to talk to him.
Ryan Lemon
We'll take yeah, but then when we put them on, don't be complaining to me. Why are we taking who's calling?
Matt Jones
I don't sound like that. 859-280-2287 we'll take a break. Be right back.

It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Let me hear from you this morning. 859-280-2287 Shane the psyche of fans is always interesting to me. If I were to say give me the best spaghetti, six full lines.
Ryan Lemon
Oh yeah.
Matt Jones
Kentucky plays Alabama on the road. Phone lines are open.
Ryan Lemon
They don't have an opinion on that.
Matt Jones
They don't have an opinion. Now they have opinion. So you wonder Matt, why do you talk about spaghetti? Yeah, there you go. Now what is also interesting Ryan, is how our fans pick the same players for guys drawing fouls. I There are three players that have each been voted for 10 times since I said that out on the text machine. 772-774-5254 we mentioned a couple of them. You mentioned Tyler Eulis, Right. I mentioned John Wall. Would you like to know the other ones that have gotten Tim votes?
Drew Franklin
Yes. Let's hear it.
Matt Jones
Isaiah Quickley or excuse me, Emmanuel Quickley. Yeah, I can see that.
Drew Franklin
Yep.
Caller
Isaiah automatic of the line too.
Matt Jones
Isaiah Briscoe.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I wouldn't have thought of him but that's.
Matt Jones
I would have because. Because he wasn't a good free throw shooter. Drew and so he would go to the line and I would drive me nuts because he did draw a lot of fouls.
Caller
Historically bad free throw shooter for a guard, 60% for most, but he drew.
Matt Jones
A lot of fouls. I'd be interested to go back and look. I bet you he was one of the leading his last year. One of the getting the most free throws and then this is a really good one because Ryan, he got a ton was Andrew Harrison.
Drew Franklin
Oh yeah, yeah. See I didn't think about him but now you say that. Yeah, yeah he did.
Matt Jones
He could draw a lot of them because he would come, he would throw himself into a guy and then basically throw it up and make the referee make a decision and he was a.
Drew Franklin
Decent free throw shooter.
Matt Jones
He was.
Caller
I can back those up with some numbers.
Matt Jones
I would have the most go for.
Caller
The most free throws per season. A lot of them are big men obviously but Wall And Ulis are 8 and 9 and Andrew Harrison is 15. That's all time. Kenny Walker's number one, Dan Isle, Julius Randall. But regards those three are up there.
Matt Jones
So look at that. Just from the collective mind Shannon of BBN we got three of the top 15.
Ryan Lemon
It's pretty good.
Matt Jones
All right, who else are guards? Because Julius Randall would have certainly been on there. Besides Wall, Ulyss and Andrew Harrison, who else are guards in any area?
Caller
Well, Meeks is number two all time behind Kenny Walker.
Matt Jones
But is that per year in his career?
Caller
It's one season.
Matt Jones
One season.
Caller
Top seasons.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Caller
His last season outside the well, Fox is 17th, Deer and Fox Monk 22nd, Quickley 23rd, Shay 25. So yeah, we're doing a pretty good job there.
Matt Jones
Heck, how about that Shannon? How about the BBN's active intelligence there?
Ryan Lemon
Trying to think of any other ones on the.
Matt Jones
So the only one that wasn't that people mentioned that wasn't on the list was what Quickly. Everybody else was on there.
Caller
No, quickly's 23rd. Briscoe. Don't see Briscoe.
Matt Jones
Okay, maybe it's just all the.
Caller
Maybe they didn't want to include a miss. Yeah, the percentage was too bad.
Matt Jones
All the misses made it feel like it Was Archie Goodwin coming in? Yeah, that's a good idea. That would have been a good one because he would just throw, run up, throw it at the basket.
Caller
And Ramel is another guard at 27. That's about it for the guards in the top 30.
Matt Jones
Nice job, people. UK fans, let's go to Reed. Go ahead, Reed.
Caller
Hey, good morning. How are you guys?
Matt Jones
Good.
Caller
Just a little nuance on the referee. Referee bit. So NFL has a rule that refs can only ref two games of. Of a team in a year. One at home and one away.
Matt Jones
Interesting.
Caller
I think that uk, UK fans like me question why it is that Doug Schalls always gets assigned to a key game. Number one. Number two. This year has reached epidemic proportions, Matt. Because the referees. This is the first year I've seen where UK has had multiple games where the opposing team shoots more free throws.
Matt Jones
That's true, that's true. But some of that is that we shoot so many. Look, we're not a physical team. I appreciate the call. I mean, I. That's a fair point. Except we don't draw fouls because we don't drive to the basket a lot of our guys. So, like, I'm not surprised. Let me quickly tell you how referees are assigned, Ryan. Cause people don't realize this. Every referee is a conference referee, which is that. Right, Ryan? They work for a conference, but they can work for multiple conferences. And most of them, I think they're not allowed to work for more than like four. But Ryan, they work for four conferences and they usually get two or three big ones and then a small one. And they can do up to five or six games a week because there's no one nationally scheduling their schedule. So they make their own schedule. And Ryan, some of them want to work every single night of the week.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I saw our Brent Hampton from here in Kentucky had the North. I mean, had the St. John's Connecticut game on Friday night, and then Saturday he had an SEC game with Caliperi. So, yeah, they do bounce around conferences.
Matt Jones
They go from conference to conference and often night to night. And there are guys who will do five or six a week. And with that travel, Shannon, there's no way you can be 100%.
Ryan Lemon
No, no. You would think they would limit how many games you can do.
Matt Jones
I mean, but you get paid by the game. So their incentive, because college basketball season's only like four months, is to do as many as they can. Right.
Ryan Lemon
And if I were a college ref, I would probably do the same thing.
Matt Jones
Probably do the same thing. So There has to be a point since. Since they make their schedule. So the SEC will assign, say, you know, Doug Shells or Oldsby the games, but then he can go do other games for other conferences, and he will. And so when you get him for a big game, you don't know, you know, what his conditioning. I mean, imagine if you were traveling six nights a week in a different arena, running up and down the court. You'd be exhausted. These are not exactly like specimen athletes.
Caller
A lot of times they're just getting right in a rental car and driving through the night to get to the next stop.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
Kind of like a professional wrestler.
Matt Jones
No, they are like. That's exactly right. They are exactly like a professional wrestler. I got a minute, right, Shannon?
Ryan Lemon
Let's go to like three minutes.
Matt Jones
Oh, yeah. Is this clock right? We go to. I'm getting the ESPN and the. I'm sorry, I'm getting those clocks confused. Let's go to George. George. ESPN ends at 26. We end at 29.
Ryan Lemon
That's right.
Matt Jones
All right, go ahead, George.
Caller
Morning, guys. How y'all doing?
Matt Jones
Good.
Caller
So I think everyone is overthinking what happened on Saturday and kind of where we are. We are missing our two best players, and we have been. And our third best player had his worst game of the year.
Matt Jones
Yep.
Caller
Some other guys didn't play great. I mean, when you really look at the roster that Pope has put on the floor, I mean, we're being held together with chicken wire and bubble gum. And we went in and almost knocked off Bama. We've knocked off other teams, you know, in similar condition to where we are. I think we need to relax and see where we are in a couple of weeks as we head into the tournament. We're still banged up. We got a problem.
Matt Jones
I think that's a perfect health.
Caller
This is a dangerous team.
Matt Jones
I think that's. Appreciate the call. That is a perfect. If you want to make a really positive statement, which I like Ryan, that's the perfect case to make.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. And they've got the games to back up his argument when they won at Tennessee. You know, a few people gave him shorthanded to win that game, and they did. So, yeah, this team, they get 100% healthy. They can definitely make some damage in the. In March.
Matt Jones
I think I said in the post game show, Drew, if this team is fully healthy, we're under seated, and if we're with the roster we have right now, we're probably overseeded. Do you agree with that?
Caller
Yeah, definitely. And I know Pope himself has Said I'm not using injuries as excuse but me where I sit on my couch, I'm giving them an excuse. I mean you can't lose players that critical to your lineups and still expect to win a bunch of ball games. I saw that Evan Mayakawa, he always tweets like the best lineups in basketball.
Matt Jones
Yes.
Caller
He tweeted Kentucky's best pairings like two guys in at the same time. And of the top 10, Kentucky can only play like one or two of them right now because they all involve Butler or Robinson. You know, just all of Kentucky's best options they can't go to.
Matt Jones
Yeah. And then you're right. Oh way has two points. So you tell me you lose your three best perimeter players and they. If I told you back in December, Shannon, we're going to play at Alabama and Robinson, Butler and away are going to combine for two points.
Ryan Lemon
No way. You get blown out, you would think you'd lose by 50.
Matt Jones
Right. I mean so there is a sense I think where as the caller makes that you actually do need to. To be. To be a little calm about. I am calm about we get our whole roster back. I like our chances in the tournament. If we don't then Ryan, I'm booking one weekend. That's just kind of how it is. Right. So I think, you know, they get.
Drew Franklin
A normal game from OA they could even have won that game Saturday.

Yeah, like, like it says like if you wanted to go see who just did Clemson S. You know Clemson NC State in 1996 you would know.
Ryan Lemon
So I wonder if we could see like which games to Kentucky lose the most.
Matt Jones
Somebody does that for Kentucky refs too. I don't know who it is but can you imagine Drew creating that website? I'm going to be the guy that keeps track of who officiates every game in college basketball.
Caller
I'm actually wondering if that's My dad, because about every night I'll get a text like, Roger Ayers is Illinois tonight. You know, he's watching the refs more than anyone. I think I get a lot of.
Matt Jones
You think your dad did the website.
Caller
Any given night, you can text Mike Franklin and say, yeah, where's Don Daly? And he knows Roger Ayers.
Matt Jones
By the way, somebody just sent me, Ryan worked 31 straight nights in November, in December.
Caller
Come on.
Drew Franklin
Well, I guess, you know, you got to make your money during basketball season.
Matt Jones
Because, I mean, there's no way those dudes can be at 100. We can't even play Amare 30 minutes.
Ryan Lemon
In a game without him getting tired. Yeah.
Matt Jones
Can we talk about that for a minute?
Drew Franklin
Yes, please.
Matt Jones
Play the best players more. Amari Williams was great in that game. Why is Amari Williams only playing 25 minutes? Why? He only had one foul. Why? Why, why?
Drew Franklin
When Kentucky went up, Alabama went on two runs. And both runs is when were. When Amari was on the bench. Both of them.
Matt Jones
Why these like, we're at the end of the year. Are we going to see this in the tournament? Like, and I don't mean this to be rude, but I'm. Am I getting 15 minutes of Brandon Garrison in every game in the tournament? Like, why can't we play Amari more minutes?
Drew Franklin
Why?
Caller
I agree it seems to be a Pope thing, because if you go back to all his other teams, whether it be BYU, Utah State, he doesn't have guys that average more than 30 minutes a game. Most like, dudes don't like 27, 28 or the leader. So part of me wants to tell Amari to get off the bench and get in there and wonder if he's conditioned. But also, Pope just historically doesn't play guys 30 minutes.
Matt Jones
Shannon, when we're in the NCAA tournament, let's say we're fully healthy. I want. But. All right, so how many total minutes are in the game? Five players. 40 minutes, 200 minutes, right?
Ryan Lemon
Yep.
Matt Jones
Butler, Robinson, away, Brea, Carr, Williams. I want 180 plus minutes from those six guys.
Ryan Lemon
And you should be getting that. I mean, at this point in the season. You know, Cal Per used to do all the time when he would get down to seven guys, and those were the seven guys would play. At this point, you got to maybe start tightening down the roster a little bit and who you play instead of just letting everybody get minutes.
Matt Jones
When we won the national championship, Drew, we played six guys. Six guys. We had Teague, Lamb, Gilchrist, Jones, Miller, Davis. That was it. Eloy Vargas would Play a couple minutes. Wilcher. A couple minutes. But we basically played six guys.
Caller
Yeah, they need Mari especially. I know he's having to do more than anyone right now because he's kind of running the offense and he is the defense. But the team's average per minute. Minutes per game. He's sixth this season.
Matt Jones
Come on.
Caller
Sixth in minutes.
Matt Jones
Foul troubles, one thing. But he only had one foul.
Caller
Yeah, he's averaging 22 minutes a game. Part of that, there are games where he's had foul trouble and didn't get to play much, but overall, that guy still needs to be playing a lot more.
Drew Franklin
You think Pope was just trying to keep him fresh in case into the game.
Matt Jones
I said this on the post game show that one of the announcers that went to a game, I won't say which one, but it wasn't Tom Hart, one of the announcers that went to a game, told me that he went to Pope, talked to Pope about minutes, and Pope has this thing he believes called maximum efficiency. And he thinks that you need to play your players the amount of minutes that gives them the most maximum efficiency when they're in, and that he has a set amount that he thinks each player can play to reach their maximum efficiency. I believe all that, Shannon. Yeah, but I don't care. I would rather have 80% Amari.
Ryan Lemon
That's what I'm saying.
Matt Jones
Than 100% Brandon Garrison on most occasions.
Ryan Lemon
We don't think that he could go out there and still put up some numbers. Post.
Matt Jones
Yes.
Ryan Lemon
His maximum efficiency, I do believe. Yeah.
Matt Jones
Nancy, Go ahead, Nancy.
Caller
Oh, okay. Thanks for taking my call. So I was. It was awful what they did to Amari when they were yelling, usa. Usa. Now.
Matt Jones
Yes.
Caller
Alabama doesn't have any exchange, you know, foreign students.
Matt Jones
They do. They have a nig. They have a Nigerian player.
Caller
Okay.
The guy guarding Amari.
Oh, okay. Sorry. So, you know, I mean, that's awful. I mean, and you know, there's a lot of students that go to Alabama that are from different countries. I just thought it was awful. And I hope Amari can get past that, which I'm sure he can, but it was. It was bad. And as far as social media goes, people that get on there and complain about Pope and complain about the team. We are out three starting guards. Come on.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I think I agree with you. I appreciate the call to your first point, Ryan. I didn't like the USA chant. I mean, as I said on the postgame show, I wouldn't have gone up there and tried to fight people. But at the Same time. It's one thing to, like, boo that. It's one thing. When you're playing for Team usa. When you're playing for Team USA and you go play against France in France, you're going to get booed. And when France comes and plays in the usa, they're going to get booed. But this is not a nationalism game. This is Kentucky versus Alabama. And I don't like the USA chant. Do you have a right to do it? Of course you do, but there's a lot of things you have a right to do that you just didn't. Shouldn't do because it's rude. I mean, later on that night, Arizona fans chanted blanking Mormon @ the BYU fans. Is that right? No.
Drew Franklin
No, not at all.
Matt Jones
No. And you could go, I was just kidding. Lighten up, my actual snowflake. But just don't be rude. You can yell at him, make a joke about tea and crumpets or the queen, but the USA chant at someone from a foreign country is just a. You know what it is. You know why you're doing it. I feel. I would feel the same way if I was in Mexico and they're like chanting, you know, well, I guess. Wait a minute. Well, and they were chanting Mexico at a player from America. Like, you just don't need to do it, Ryan. So, I mean, am I going to go tell these college kids they're the worst people? No, but I wish schools wouldn't do that. And if we did it, and I've been told we have done that in the past, although I don't remember it, we shouldn't do it either.
Drew Franklin
Like we said. The thing that puzzled me was that their starting center was from Nigeria. They, you know, they didn't. They didn't know where he was from. They're trying to, you know, get that at Mari, but I think they forgot they have a foreign exchange student on their team also.
Matt Jones
Right. Drew, what do you. What do you think on that?
Caller
That and Terry Oglesby chasing Mark Pope had me seeing red at home. I love America. I chant usa. But for some reason, I was so angry at them doing that. Part of it was also the stupidity that the guy literally with his body against Amari Williams is not from America. That's on there, too. But, yeah, that. It got under my skin pretty bad, hopefully.
Matt Jones
But the Alabama fans saw me tweet about it, Shannon. They all started tweeting, you don't love America, man. And here's my view, and I appreciate the call. Nancy. Here's my View on that. You want to know somebody's rich, they don't have to tell you they're rich. Right. If you want to know somebody's good looking, do they have to tell you they're good looking? Do they have to be like, look how good looking I am? No. Rich people don't tell you they're. The people who tell you they're rich probably aren't rich. The people who tell you they're good looking probably aren't good looking. If you can love America without like wearing US Thongs outside, we gotta get.
Ryan Lemon
You a US Thong now. American flag.
Matt Jones
You know, when I was a kid, I think I've said this before, my grandfather thought, shannon, you shouldn't wear your. You shouldn't wear a flag ever. That it was disrespectful.
Drew Franklin
Yes.
Matt Jones
Yeah, that was like, like the fact that that's now become normal. He would be like, he, you know, he served in World War II and he was like, people who wear a flag, like, even the ones who think they're like. He thought that was the most disrespectful thing you could do. He thought the flag was supposed to be revered, not worn as a piece of clothing. Right?
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. I don't think I own a piece of American flag clothing. Do you, do you have like a.
Matt Jones
I mean, I do have a onesie that we got from.
Drew Franklin
Oh, yeah.
Matt Jones
What was that? What was that thing?
Ryan Lemon
We used to do ads for nut dust.
Matt Jones
That was a different thing we did.
Caller
That was a different one.
Matt Jones
That was a different one. It was like something elves, wasn't it? Like Tipsy Elves. Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
You have an American flag? Tipsy elves.
Matt Jones
They sent me a bunch of them and one of them was an American flag onesie.
Ryan Lemon
Oh, dude, I have one too.
Caller
I still wear it.
Ryan Lemon
You got, you got to put that on.
Matt Jones
I wear it sometimes when I'm feeling.
Ryan Lemon
Kind of wear to the SEC tournament.
Matt Jones
Ladies like it. You know, that's what's the. No, I'm not wearing it.
Ryan Lemon
You fit right in.
Matt Jones

Matt Jones
Of course you would.
Ryan Lemon
Play this great song.
Matt Jones
You know I hate this song which is.
Ryan Lemon
You hate it because of.
Matt Jones
I hate it because. Yeah. I hated it before. Like don't start. I hated it before it became like the. The. The maga anthem. It has nothing to do with that. It's the fact that they played this every day at my kids school.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And it. And it's. And people don't realize how long of a song it is.
Ryan Lemon
Like three minutes.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Well, we had an extended version. It had like a musical intro and when you were a kid, three minutes after the pledge of allegiance and after the national anthem's a lot of time to be standing.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. You know it's a long song.
Matt Jones
It is a long song. I was really only three minutes. I thought it was like 10.
Ryan Lemon
Three minutes.
Matt Jones
And so I will say, when I met him at the Grand Old Opera, he couldn't have been nicer. And I said to him, I had to listen to your song every day when I was a kid. And he was like, really? So I guess Middlesborough was the only school that did that.
Ryan Lemon
Getting them that. Those royalties every time they played.
Matt Jones
I wonder who it was at Middlesborough that made everybody that started. Because apparently I don't think other schools did that.
Ryan Lemon
We didn't do it.
Drew Franklin
We didn't do it.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
We had to say the Pledge of Allegiance.
Matt Jones
Yeah, the Pledge of Allegiance. I'm fine with national anthem. I just don't know that we need to do this. And then. And then only in America, like, there just comes a point. We get it. We're all patriotic. We get it.
Ryan Lemon
Sound like y'all spent like an hour just.
Matt Jones
We did. It was. It was the hits. It was the hits. And every time they'd add a new one. Darryl Worley, what was his song about? 911 now. Have you forgotten? I bet they play that. What did you think, Drew, about the New Bloods? The Blue Bloods. Scratched out New Bloods on t shirt 1.
Caller
It's good to know Kentucky still. Everyone's super bowl. But, you know, it's. I don't like the idea of giving Alabama that credit of being a new blood blue blood. But they're recording the SEC lately. It's hard to. Hard to talk bad about them. I mean, they have owned the conference until this year with Auburn. Really hit. Running away with it.
Matt Jones
I didn't buy it. Didn't bother. I actually thought that was kind of clever.
Caller
Yeah, they've kind of earned it.
Matt Jones
They've earned it.
Drew Franklin
That's what I was going to say. Both Auburn and Alabama, I think, have both kind of earned that title now.
Matt Jones
Yeah. One person writes, matt, instead of chanting usa, they should have chanted beans for breakfast at a march. Do British people eat beans for breakfast?
Caller
Oh, yeah. I've talked to Amar. He can't find an English breakfast in town. I told him, what kind of beans is it?
Matt Jones
Like pinto. I mean, I've spent a lot of time in England. I don't know what. I don't know that.
Caller
Yeah, they're similar, like brown beans, little tomato, little egg.
Matt Jones
So they eat like. So it's like pinto beans. Is that right?
Caller
I don't remember smaller than pinto beans. I don't know exactly what they would be. They have, like, their. Their version of bacon.
Matt Jones
See, when I was.
Caller
Yes.
Matt Jones
Now that's like ham. It's like Canadian.
Caller
Like.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So I've eaten that. They eat English muffins quite a bit, but I don't think I've ever seen beans for breakfast.
Ryan Lemon
Here's the answer, according to AI. They say baked beans.
Matt Jones
Usually baked beans. Okay.
Ryan Lemon
Usually with navy beans and cooked in tomato sauce.
Matt Jones
I've never seen that.
Ryan Lemon
Beans on toast.
Caller
When I'm in New York, you know, I'm known to frequent Jack Dempsey's. That usually brings me back to life. I bet our UK alums and up in New York know all about.
Matt Jones
I didn't know that was a thing, which is crazy, but I had. I had no idea. Real quick scuttlebutt, Ryan. I think Butler will be full practicing this week. The goal is to play him in the Auburn game, I think LSU game at the latest for senior night. Jackson Robinson would like to play him for senior night. Not sure that's going to happen. Goal is the SEC tournament.
Drew Franklin
Well, I'm taking it. I mean, at least, you know, trajectory to get back on the court at least by the end of the season of both of them, so. I like that.
Matt Jones
So I think we're probably absent some change today, going to see Oklahoma without both guys. So cross your fingers. We need it. They got a big win. Yeah, they did. They got a big win Saturday. If they beat us, they're probably in the tournament. So, like, that'll be a huge game for them.
Drew Franklin
Derek, say homecoming for away.
Matt Jones
Yeah, go ahead, Derek. Derek. Hey, this is Derek, longtime listener, first time caller. Who are. Can you hear me? Yes, hey, thanks. So, you know, you got me to call in because earlier you're mentioning something about spaghetti and you know, my favorite kind of spaghetti is baked spaghetti. I had a buddy once who told me that he had some really good.
Advertiser
Baked spaghetti on a buffet at a gentleman's club.
Matt Jones
All right, I appreciate the call, Shannon. Baked spaghetti. I had a T. Who used to make really good baked spaghetti. Was the old spaghetti factory in Louisville. Oh, yeah. Is that place still open?
Ryan Lemon
It's right down a couple blocks from here.
Matt Jones
It's still open after all these years.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
You know, that was for a long time, like the only place to eat in downtown Louisville. When I was a kid, it was the old spaghetti factory.
Ryan Lemon
You know who else has really good baked spaghetti?
Matt Jones
Who's that?
Ryan Lemon
Pozoli's. Get it right through the drive through. Man, the bread sticks. I mean, it's perfect.
Matt Jones
I haven't been to old Spaghetti Factory. Will you let's go sometime you want to go to Old Spaghetti Factory? When's the last time you've been to Old Spaghetti Factory?
Ryan Lemon
High school prom.
Matt Jones
Yeah, exactly. That's what I'm saying, Ryan. Now that Hooters has declared bankruptcy, next meeting is an Old Spaghetti Factory.
Drew Franklin
All right, call the meeting. We'll be there.
Matt Jones
Now, see, I kind of want Old Spaghetti Factory.
Drew Franklin
I didn't know it was still open.
Matt Jones
I'm shocked it's still open.
Ryan Lemon
Get ice cream after it's over.
Matt Jones
Do people who goes.
Ryan Lemon
Somebody's going. I mean, it's still.
Matt Jones
I haven't heard anyone talk about Old spaghetti factory in 15 years.
Ryan Lemon
I guess they don't eat advertising. They're just, you know, a staple now.
Matt Jones
I kind of want it, like, right now.
Ryan Lemon
Well, you can leave. We can do the rest.
Matt Jones
Oh, wait a minute. I'm in Louisville.
Ryan Lemon
I could go twice that. It's two blocks from here once.
Matt Jones
You want to go get lunch there on me. You want to get lunch at Old Spaghetti Factory?
Ryan Lemon
I think I got other things going on.
Matt Jones
You know what? Say it, Linden. Go ahead. Hey, before I ask my question, you brought up advertising. What advertisement do you look back and think, why the hell did I ever do that? You mean, what did I endorse?
Caller
Yes.
Matt Jones
Oh, wow.
Ryan Lemon
The answer is nothing, because we would never endorse anything that we don't believe in.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I mean, so I've turned down. There's some people on this show that one endorse anything. Right. And Shannon as well. I turn down over half the endorsements because I'm like, if I. If it's not real, I won't do it. And I don't really do alcohol unless there's a specific. I try not to do alcohol. So the short answer is I can't think of one, because usually I've used the product. We did a thing once for one of those, like, you can get a job site things or whatever, and I knew it wouldn't work, but they paid a lot of money, so we did it. So that's the closest one. But, like, I don't endorse things unless. Cause I just. It's. I don't know. I don't want to feel bad about it. It's like Richard Petty. Richard Petty wouldn't put a beer company on his car. And for some reason, that always stuck with me. But go ahead. So, hey, on. On. On the refereeing, I think you would.
Caller
Agree, the SEC officials let stuff go this year.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Caller
That potentially is going to hurt if.
Matt Jones
Hurt teams in sec.
Caller
If we get a tight whistle in the tournament.
Matt Jones
Yeah, but how do you think that.
Caller
Hurts or benefits us?
Matt Jones
We need the game to be called, honestly, we probably need the game to be called loose because we, we don't draw fouls. Right. So we don't, because we don't draw fouls. Like a tight whistle doesn't help us if we're shooting jump shots, you know, I appreciate the call. So for us, I think games where there's a lot of fouls drew probably hurt us because we, we don't draw fouls as well, no matter what. So I almost wish we had a loose whistle so that maybe we can foul them a little more.
Caller
We don't have anyone that does the Mark Sears throw your head back or extend your right arm while throwing your body to the left when you're the one creating contact and still drawing a foul. And even like I noticed in the Alabama game, Andrew Carr, even with good position in the post, he scored on it, but he turned around, did a little fade away. It's just a different style of basketball. You're not going to get the whistle as much as someone that's trying to go straight up into a guy's arms and draw that.
Matt Jones
Totally agree. What do you have to do for lunch instead of going to the old spaghetti thing?
Ryan Lemon
Oh, I gotta put the podcast and I got two afternoon shows and I got all kinds of stuff going on.
Matt Jones
So you're just not interested in having Old Spaghetti Factory?
Ryan Lemon
If you want to go Fazoli's, that's a different story.
Matt Jones
So you don't want to go to the factory. There we go. All right, we'll take a break. Be right back. KSI hey, Jenice Torres here and I'm Austin Hankwitz. Podcast Summary: KSR - Hour 1 (February 24, 2025)
Introduction
In the February 24, 2025, episode of KSR hosted by Matt Jones and the KSR crew from iHeartPodcasts and Sports Talk 790 (WKRD-AM), listeners were treated to an in-depth analysis of Kentucky's recent performance in college basketball, particularly focusing on their game against Alabama. The hosts engaged in lively discussions, fielded listener calls, and shared insights on team dynamics, officiating, and upcoming challenges.
1. Kentucky vs. Alabama Game Analysis
Timestamp: 01:59 - 06:07
The episode began with Matt Jones setting the stage for the Kentucky Sports Radio segment. The primary focus was on Kentucky's disappointing loss to Alabama, despite holding a significant lead early in the game.
The team surged ahead, leading 20-9 and even reaching 30-18 at one point. However, the offense stalled, leading to Alabama's comeback and eventual victory.
Drew Franklin provided a balanced perspective, acknowledging the team's effort and energy but conceding that Alabama was the superior team.
Matt reflected on the pregame discussions, emphasizing the offensive challenges faced by Kentucky.
2. Officiating Controversies
Timestamp: 06:07 - 12:22
A significant portion of the discussion centered around the officiating of the Kentucky vs. Alabama game. Matt expressed frustration with the referees, suggesting that the calls may have favored Alabama.
The hosts debated the impact of specific referees, notably Terry Oglesby and Mark Pope, criticizing their conduct and consistency.
Drew and callers supported the notion that officiating played a role in Kentucky's loss, highlighting specific fouls and calls that seemed detrimental.
3. Team Performance and Player Utilization
Timestamp: 12:22 - 30:55
The conversation shifted to Kentucky's team dynamics, focusing on player minutes and the impact of injuries.
Matt criticized the limited playtime for key players like Amari Williams, questioning Coach Pope's strategy.
Drew Franklin echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for better player rotation and utilization to enhance team performance.
Listener calls reinforced the discussion, pointing out the historical reluctance to extend player minutes and the resulting negative impact on the team's competitiveness.
4. Refereeing Practices in the SEC
Timestamp: 21:02 - 24:05
The hosts delved deeper into the broader issue of refereeing within the SEC, discussing how referees are assigned and the potential fatigue from handling multiple games in a week.
This segment highlighted concerns about referee consistency and the potential for compromised performance due to overwork.
5. Upcoming Challenges and Team Outlook
