Comedyoff broadway this is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome everyone, Kentucky Sports Radio Monday, March 3 I am Matt Jones here on a cold but sunny day in Louisville, Kentucky. We are all in different places. I guess I am in Louisville in the studio. Shannon is across the hall, I would assume. Ryan and Drew are in Lexington in the studio and you can give us a shout on the Clark's Puppet Shop phone line. That's 859-280-22-287. I'll be able to see the callers to make sure my favorites get on. Shannon to keep you from trying to fool me, the Aviation Auto Glass text machine is 772-774-5254. In this edition sponsored by the TJ Smith Law Office. Call TJ. You'll make them pay. My little book says it is Eastern Orthodox Lent begins which seems nice and I hope you all are celebrating. Ryan Tough weekend for the UK Basketball team as they get kind of a beat down at home. But the good thing is we didn't even get to see the last 12 minutes of the game. So it's almost like it didn't happen.
Shannon The Dude
I'm almost glad that that technical difficulty happened so I didn't have to watch the last 10 minutes because that was, that was an ass whooping. I mean they beat him down pretty good. Their dudes are just better than our dudes. You know, overall, even though I think Car and Amari both played pretty well. Big guy, our big guys played pretty well. They just got better dudes than we got.
Matt Jones
Yeah, that's what I heard. I don't know for sure if that happened, but you know, look, I said on the post game show, Drew, I think with our roster as it's currently constituted, we have a starting five that can compete for, if not with everybody, almost everybody. But we just have such a huge drop off on the bench. We had five points come off the bench. That's it. Five. You're just not, you know, you're not going to win like that against a team as good as Auburn on a night they're playing well.
Drew Franklin
No, Auburn had nearly 30 bench points. And speaking of the number 30, it didn't help that their fourth or fifth best option gave you 30 points and hit nine three pointers. He doubled more than doubled UK and threes and had the two banked in back to back, which I think at that point we all know the Bank 10 curse. We knew it was going to be.
Matt Jones
One of those days. Backed in, banked in, back to back. I mean Shannon, at that moment, game's over, right back baked in back to back.
Ryan Lemond
Kentucky has got to lead the nation in allowing the most banked threes to. I mean it seems like every game somebody's banking in a three and then.
Matt Jones
To do it back to back. I mean, who. I'd like to know in the history of basketball, Ryan, how many times a dude is banked in back to back threes?
Ryan Lemond
I mean back in like the 1920s when they tried to do it, you know, it was like a set shot.
Matt Jones
But no one tries to bank in a threes. Yeah, I mean it wasn't a three. So that, that, that couldn't happen. It was ridiculous. I mean I think that made it like 21 to 8. And I got up and went, well, don't have to worry about this one anymore. It kind of is what it is. We do for me, the most two things are most important coming out. Number one, why did the game go off the air. Because in the grand scheme of sports, Ryan, how many times have you ever watched an event that just went completely off the air for a long time?
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, we've seen events that maybe go away for 30 seconds, maybe a minute. Not when they're 10 minutes, 11 minutes still on the clock. That was kind of. I kept waiting for it to come.
Matt Jones
Back, and it never came back.
Shannon The Dude
Never came back.
Matt Jones
All right, so apparently there was a fire outside of the arena. I will tell you what happened for me, Drew. The game goes off the air. You get the blue screen. I felt like, boy, these commercials are taking a long time. And then they came back, and there were just two guys in the studio, and they start talking about a different game. And I was like, well, that doesn't make any sense. And then I get a call that says, matt, the area outside the TV truck is on fire. It has burned through the production and. But don't say fire. But the game's probably not coming back on. And I was like, oh. So I think I tweeted out something like, breaking news. Game may not come back on. There's an issue next to the production truck, of course. Then Shannon Billy on the postgame show just goes, well, there was a fire outside. Like, I guess later everybody else reported it. But did we ever know, Drew, what the fire was and what kind of fire it was?
Shannon The Dude
I've got it.
Matt Jones
You've got it, Scoop?
Shannon The Dude
You know, I got a pretty good connection in the fire world, in the video services world.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Shannon The Dude
They had caution tape around the generator and a load box, which got caught in some fans and started a fire in the load box.
Matt Jones
What's the load box?
Shannon The Dude
It's like, kind of. Well, ironically, I think it's supposed to help keep everything from overheating. Keep everything from overheating.
Matt Jones
Oh, wait a minute. So the. The box that's in charge of not having fires caught on fire box.
Shannon The Dude
Blame it on some caution tape.
Ryan Lemond
Somebody's got an answer to this.
Matt Jones
But a caution tape doesn't just randomly ignite. Like something had to set it off.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, yeah. If it was attached and wind blew it loose and it gets in those fans.
Matt Jones
Wind causes fire.
Shannon The Dude
Wind caused the tape to break loose.
Matt Jones
And then what?
Shannon The Dude
Then it gets in those. Fan. That fan. And just so you think a fan.
Matt Jones
So you're saying the official explanation is that a fan tape blew into a fan and it ignited a fire?
Shannon The Dude
That's what happened at my house. The refrigerator exhaust vent caught fire, but.
Matt Jones
Not because of tape.
Shannon The Dude
Well, no, but it was a Paper. There was paper around it. It just dries out and somehow sparks.
Drew Franklin
Wow.
Ryan Lemond
Who knew it was that easy to start a fire? I can never start a fire. Like when I'm trying to. Yeah, but then I have a fire.
Matt Jones
I have a lighter that gives fire and I can't get it to candles. And you're telling me that just paper into a fan can cause a fire?
Shannon The Dude
That's what. That's what happened.
Matt Jones
Well, I think we need a new load box, Drew, because clearly that one's not keeping the fire load away.
Drew Franklin
A rough start for the first ABC game. And however long it was, all the excitement, Billis in the house and then most of the second half you don't even get to see. Ridiculous.
Matt Jones
Here's what I want to say. What do we think happened, Shannon, if that game was close, like, what if it was again number one team in rub and it was a two point game with like four minutes to go and we weren't able to see it. Do you think this. I mean, what happens?
Ryan Lemond
There'd be more fires. People's heads would be exploding.
Matt Jones
It would have been. It would have been a crazy scene. I think at one point Drew did that. Did Kentucky cut it to like nine or eight or some point after. After that, did they cut it a little bit?
Drew Franklin
I think to 10 or 11. I don't know if it got to single digits. Andrew Carr went on a little mini run. I think he had nine straight points by himself. They got a few stops. I don't know that it got rubbery in a very confident, but at least.
Matt Jones
Kept people engaged a little bit in the second half. I did see it when it got that point. And Shannon, I was thinking, man, if they make a run here and then we're not watching, what happens at that point? Do people like try to storm into the gym? Like. Like it could have been one of the mystery games of all time with none of us watching.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, everybody listening to Tom and Jack. That's the only way you could get it right. So apparently normally networks will use like UK's feed for these games, but ABC wanted to use their own, so they.
Matt Jones
Wanted their own load.
Ryan Lemond
Well, that's what Tom was telling me. Okay, so apparently that's what happened.
Matt Jones
Well, you see, it didn't work.
Ryan Lemond
One job.
Matt Jones
We have one job. Don't catch on fire. And then they did. There was a guy in the stands, Ryan, who just started filming it from the stands. I think at one point he had like 24,000 people on his stream.
Shannon The Dude
Holy cow.
Matt Jones
Yeah, he had more people Watching his cell phone than most television shows do in this area. Mario asked me if he could do it, and I said, like, we're gonna get in trouble. What's the point of, like, getting in trouble for a game? But if it had gotten close, Drew, I was gonna tell Mario to start filming.
Drew Franklin
Oh, my Twitter blew up with people begging me to go live. And y'all gotta understand, JMI would have had a sniper on the roof take me out if I just picked up my phone during those. So that was a big no. No. But we tried our best with the live blog.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
I even had someone text me from Jack Dempsey's in New York that said people are trying to put the live blog onto the TVs at the bar in New York because they couldn't see the game.
Matt Jones
That would have been right, though. If the game had been close. I would have told you all to do it. I would have said. I would have said, shannon, look, if JMI wants to get mad at us having the only film of a game that's not otherwise on, then they can get mad.
Ryan Lemond
Exactly. Yeah. At that point, I think it would be worth it.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I think it would have been worth it if the game was close, but it never got close. So Jackson Robinson, after the game was over, it's announced he's out for the year. If you listen to the pregame show, that was kind of what it sounded like was going to happen. He was going to go to another specialist this week, but apparently he's been to, like three. They were going to try one more. I guess the decision ended up being not to do that. He has to have surgery. You know, it's a bit. It's a big blow. I don't think. I don't think it's like a, you know, a killer blow. Like, you can't overcome it. But I do think it takes away, Ryan. The ceiling of the team. Like, the ceiling of the team is not as high as it was otherwise.
Shannon The Dude
I totally agree with you. You know, we all said when he first got hired, we hope he makes it to the second weekend. Well, now I'm back to where I was then. Like, man, I just. If they can just find a way just to get to the second weekend, the Sweet 16, I think I'd be happy. That's a big blow, man. He was a. He not only meant a lot on the court, he meant a lot off the court because he knew he'd already played for Pope for two years. He kind of knew how to handle and what was coming up and kind of helped, I think the rest of the guys in the locker room.
Matt Jones
Why do you think Drew? I have a lot of fans riding on the text machine and everybody keeps saying that. Second weekend, second weekend. Why do you think that is such a. Is it a mental thing just because we haven't done it in a few years? Like, why do you think people are. Well, we've got to get to the second weekend. I mean, I, I'd love to see us get to the final weekend, but why do you think that second weekend is such a thing to people? Because I keep hearing that over and over.
Drew Franklin
I think you said it's just been so long since we've been there with all the excitement of beating so many top 25 teams this year, kind of feel like it's possible. I think it's the same way with people saying, just win a game in Nashville. Yeah, no one's really setting that high of a bar. It's just that's how bad it's been lately. We just want to go a little bit farther and give Pope on the right track.
Matt Jones
Well, let's talk about the Nashville situation. So, Vandy, how did they win that game? Shannon. I know, but they shouldn't have. I mean, Missouri was up three and got fouled, I think, and had two free throws basically to put away, made one. Then Vandy comes down. Or was that was the Tennessee game? What was.
Ryan Lemond
I think you're talking about the Tennessee.
Matt Jones
Yeah, the Tennessee game. Tennessee was down four and still ended up winning. My Vandy won in overtime, but Missouri should have won that game. But Vandy winning. Now there's a three way tie for eighth place. We hold the tiebreaker for a variety of reasons, but basically the way I, the way I sort of perceive it is if we win both, if we win both games, if we win LSU and Missouri, I think we have a chance to be higher than the eight. We could get up to a seven or the six seed. I think the six is actually where we would go if we end up winning both games. If we win one, the eight seat is most likely. But we need Mississippi State to lose a game and they have two very winnable games. And then if you lose both games, then we're playing on Wednesday. That's kind of how I look at it. So, Ryan, it's almost like it's right in front of them. Beat LSU and then you set up a game with Missouri where you could end up like the six seed. Or if Mississippi State wins both games, you could end up playing on Wednesday. A lot would be on the line.
Shannon The Dude
In Columbia and I think it's. You've got to take that attitude. Right. Because like you said, Mississippi State's remaining two games are favorable for them.
Matt Jones
They play what is it Texas and then at Arkansas. Is that, is that what they do?
Shannon The Dude
So you got to think they're going to be favored in both of those.
Matt Jones
The Arkansas game, they may not be favored, I'm not sure. But either way, the point being like they can win both those games.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Matt Jones
So that's all you got for me?
Shannon The Dude
Well, that's what I said. I mean I think Mississippi State's going to win them both.
Matt Jones
Just gave me a yeah. Shannon gave me a yeah.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
If we end up in a three way tie with Vanny Mississippi State we can end up the 10 even going one on one because in a three way, the way they round robin in with those teams that we would be third.
Matt Jones
Are we. Because right now.
Drew Franklin
Because that's unlikely.
Matt Jones
But it's, but I don't think that's right because all three of those teams, all three of those gay teams were tied now and the SEC still has his projected eighth. So what would change?
Drew Franklin
Well, if it's a three way tie, then it goes the round robin and they will have to get there. They will have beaten, when you combine all the teams in the round robin, they will have beaten more and then the tiebreaker goes down to. I looked this up earlier but then he used to like you.
Matt Jones
But that's what it is already and they have us like, like the three games between these teams are already done and the SEC has us as the eight right now.
Drew Franklin
Like they, but then it goes to your record against like the top team. It was this long process of how this works. I mean it's a long shot but it, it is possible.
Matt Jones
It.
Drew Franklin
Then it goes, if it's all the same, then it goes to your order against 1, 2, 3, 4.
Matt Jones
Okay, well if it's a, if it's.
Drew Franklin
A four way tie, I think we're, we're the eight so that we'd almost rather have a four way tie than a three way tie.
Matt Jones
Well either way, if we can, if we could the key is to, to beat LSU and then see what happens with Missouri. Mississippi State's two games are they host Texas and go to Arkansas. So we might find ourselves Shannon in the final week rooting for, for John Calipan.
Ryan Lemond
Oh no, we don't want to be in that situation. Especially with them putting up what, 14 points and oh my goodness, what a disaster.
Matt Jones
And Arkansas plays at Vandy Tuesday night as well. So you got that. You got that ahead. So Arkansas plays the two teams. Right now we're tied with Arkansas, Mississippi State and we start chewing for Arkansas. We didn't have to cheer. But the problem is if Arkansas doesn't matter, it's too much to go on. But if you go to know Kentucky has a decent chance to get out of the eight seed and actually have a path where they could do something in Nashville. But you're going to have to go to an oh for that to happen. 8592802287 text machine to 772774, 5254. A disappointing Saturday. Are you done or do you still think this team can make a run? That's what I Want to know. 859-280-2287. You can call or on the text machine. I want to know. Do you still think we can make a run? I do. I'll tell you why. But what about you? We'll be right back. Scale. Okay, so this is. Let me think of what the name of this group is. Bloodhound game.
Ryan Lemond
There you go.
Matt Jones
Yes.
Ryan Lemond
They had this one in the Bad touch.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Are they playing Larger than life? They feel like a larger than life band.
Ryan Lemond
Louder than Life. No, they're not. No.
Matt Jones
Okay. All right. So people. Electricians are riding in. So that's a great thing about this show. There's somebody that does everything. I could say any job and somebody that listen to this show does it. We've had multiple electricians write in this one says Matt. As with most things with Ryan, he's kind of correct, but not totally. It's likely the paper stalled the fan out. The current then increased as it continued to try to make the fan move, but it couldn't. The locked rotor then caused the fire. That's. Is that what you meant, Ryan?
Shannon The Dude
Makes sense. All started with some tape getting stuck in a load box.
Ryan Lemond
That's exactly word for word what? Ryan?
Matt Jones
Exactly. Is that what? I don't know.
Shannon The Dude
What?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Was that exactly word for word what you. What you said?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, exactly. I can't believe you didn't.
Matt Jones
I don't. I didn't take that as a word for word. But. But, you know, if you say so. I. Why wouldn't it. All right, I'm going to give my real quick take on why Drew. I think UK still. Still in it. Their ceiling is certainly down and I do think it's going to be very hard for us to beat an Auburn or a Duke. But beyond that, we have the offense still to score mid to high 80s. And I do think you get a game where guys get hot, we can be in it. Our problem against Auburn, we went down 21 to 8, basically because we went to our bench and our bench can't, can't handle it. That was 13 point difference. We end up losing by 16. If you don't have that period, maybe it's competitive at the end. I still feel like against most teams with Butler, they have enough. If they roll with the starters, they have enough to stay in these games and give them a shot. It may be hard against an Auburn, a Duke or even a Florida, but I do think they can still beat anybody. I also think the amount of teams that can beat us now has grown to where every game's going to be tough.
Drew Franklin
Definitely we mentioned it before. We knew Robinson was out for the year. We were just talking about if he didn't play against Auburn. But your bench has to step up and they absolutely did not step up on Saturday. Also, you know, like we said, every week you got to take more threes. And it seemed like the game plan against Auburn was to drive.
Matt Jones
I don't get it.
Drew Franklin
And it, there was a stretch in the second half where it's like they forgot how to dribble. They started the second half with six turnovers and zero shot attempts. That's outrageous. Outrageous basketball game.
Matt Jones
Yeah, they, I, I, this is the first time all year I didn't really understand what Pope's game plan was. My number one question to Pope, when the year's over, is going to go. Ryan, what happened to the 35 threes we were going to take? Exactly, because that just went away. And I know part of it is they extend their defense out, et cetera, but we only took 17. And that just. We're not going to win unless we take double that.
Shannon The Dude
And I think we've got a couple of guys that can't create that space to get the three off. They've got to have a lot of help and they're not getting it. So I think they're having trouble just getting a shit. Getting a shot off.
Matt Jones
Yes. Period. We're having, I think that's Anytime, Shannon. I see one of these dudes hesitating that can shoot threes. I'm like, what are you doing?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
You think we're gonna get a better shot in 10 seconds?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, let it fly, let it fly. We got guys that can knock it down. But Ryan dried. I mean, you're, I guess, just relying on coming off a screen every time to get an open look, you gotta be able to create.
Matt Jones
You're not going to beat Auburn making four threes. So you got. Look, let's say we took 30, we make eight, and then maybe it's a. It's a competitive game. Like you just got to take more. We have to.
Drew Franklin
And Bray ended up with four, but I mean, Kentucky had 13 for like 25 to 30 minutes of the game. It got to where the offense was so stagnant, he just pulled from deep on two of them. Luckily he made them, but it's like the three point point three pointers didn't exist for most of that game. So it was already over with Judy and Mount Sterling.
Matt Jones
What's up, Judy?
E
Hey. Well, I'll say I'm kind of happy I missed the game because we were on our way back from Mexico.
Matt Jones
Oh, wow.
E
We're gonna humble brag because I don't want to be a number eight seed and then have to play Auburn. Win the first game and have to play Auburn the second game. But the other one other thing I just want to say is, Matt, I just. I read the wager while I was down in Mexico.
Matt Jones
Okay.
E
And it's more. More of a man book.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
E
But you know, there's some gruesome stuff in it, but because it was a true story, it was absolutely amazing.
Matt Jones
Well, good. If you want a woman book. Would you like a woman book in return, Judy?
E
Well, no, I like murder.
Matt Jones
Oh, you want me in books. Okay.
Ryan Lemond
She wants murders.
Matt Jones
You want men books. You don't want me to give you a woman book.
E
I don't want. I don't like romance.
Matt Jones
Okay. But I'm not saying romance. Just one about like. Well, so. So you said it was kind of a man book. You just want all man books.
E
No, no, no, no, no, no. It was just a little gruesome at times reading that book.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it is a little gross, Judy. I'm gonna give you another one to read. I'm gonna give you another one. Read.
E
Okay.
Matt Jones
Bell. B E L conto. C A N, T, O. It's a good mix of man and woman. How about that?
E
What's the first B L?
Matt Jones
Bell. B L, Kanto. C A, N, T, O. It's like a. There's a. There's. There's. There's some. There's some murdery stuff, but then there's also some, some. Some women stuff. You good? You go with that, right?
E
All right, Sounds great. I got it written down.
Matt Jones
Appreciate it. She doesn't want any romance, Shannon. Get that romance out of here with Judy.
Ryan Lemond
Exactly.
Matt Jones
She doesn't need to, man. She's like, forget that.
Ryan Lemond
I have to listen to the audiobook around my house out loud of romance books. And it's really uncomfortable.
Matt Jones
Yeah. First of all, women are on this kick.
Ryan Lemond
I don't understand it.
Matt Jones
Have you seen Barnes and Noble is opening drew 60 new stores? And when I was was, I was like, well, that's a little surprising. Why? And it said, it's all because of, like, fantasy smut. It's all because of, like, women reading fantasy novels where, like, vampires, they all have. Have sex with each other.
Ryan Lemond
It's audio porn.
Matt Jones
No, it is.
Ryan Lemond
And I get in her car and it's on. And I'm going, what in the world are you listening to?
Matt Jones
I have these two fema. And that's all they do. And we'll go to dinner, the three of us, and they just talk about these, like, books about fairies who are in love with werewolves and, like.
Ryan Lemond
And the last one she had was the Loch Ness monster.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
And they love monster sex.
Matt Jones
They love it. And apparently it's like rebirthing bookstores because they like to come in there and, like, skim through and see. It's. It's crazy.
Drew Franklin
I actually read a story about this because, you know, Barnes and Noble was going the wrong direction. And they credit their resurgence all to tick tock. And they're going to put tick tock areas in their stores and they call it Book talk. And that's where women are sharing these. But Barnes and Noble has admitted we were on our way down until TikTok saved us.
Matt Jones
But it's. But it's this smut. It's like fantasy smut with, like, crawdads making out with sharks. Like, that's what it is.
Ryan Lemond
The other one was called, like, I Banged the Mothman.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it's unbelievable. We'll take a break. Be right back. He'll make him pay.
Ryan Lemond
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it's called Shannon fantasy or fairy smut?
Ryan Lemond
Okay, well, I'm hearing a lot of that around the house.
Matt Jones
So your. Your girlfriend just walks around and just plays it, like, over the Alexa. Oh, my goodness.
Ryan Lemond
Could you put some, like, some headphones on or something?
Matt Jones
Yeah, that's got to be weird.
Ryan Lemond
I don't need to hear that.
Matt Jones
Yeah, yeah. I. I'm telling you, these two women, I know, like, that's all they talk about. And they read, like, three books a day. Or not. Not a Day. Excuse me? Like, three books a week or something of it. It's crazy.
Ryan Lemond
Okay, I need your ruling on something.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
If you listen to an audiobook.
Matt Jones
Not the same as. No, no.
Ryan Lemond
Okay.
Matt Jones
That's a podcast.
Ryan Lemond
Thank you. Now, I try to tell her an.
Matt Jones
Audiobook is not reading.
Ryan Lemond
She's like, I read 10 books.
Matt Jones
It's not reading.
Ryan Lemond
You didn't.
Matt Jones
No, it's not reading. Now it is. I'm not saying it's not valuable, but it's not reading.
Ryan Lemond
I agree.
Matt Jones
Reading is using your eyes and it. And thinking or Braille or whatever. You know what I mean? Like, it's not. Audio is different because you can kind of tune in and out.
Ryan Lemond
That's right.
Matt Jones
To read, you got to read. So, no, it's not reading. It's still valuable. But, Ryan, it's not the same as reading.
Shannon The Dude
See, I tune out when I'm reading my mind. Just.
Matt Jones
What do you mean you tune out when you're reading? How do you do that?
Shannon The Dude
My ADD just takes off and I'm like, what did I just. I just read two pages. I have no idea what I just read.
Matt Jones
But you didn't read it if you didn't process it.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, there's no processing going on.
Drew Franklin
Sometimes I'll do both with the same book.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I'm sorry. The hours you are reading or listening, it's fine. But it's like. It's a podcast. It's not reading. If you do it like that.
Ryan Lemond
Towards book it. Like, if you sit out, listen.
Matt Jones
No, I mean, I did an audio book with Mitch, Please. And I actually think it's very entertaining because Chris and I did different voices and we got some people that were in the book to come and actually voice their own part. But it's also like. It's like an entertainment thing. Shannon, it's not reading. It's like. It's an audio experience.
Ryan Lemond
Exactly. It's like listening to this show right now.
Matt Jones
That's exactly right.
Ryan Lemond
Same as reading a book.
Matt Jones
One person writes, Matt, I watch the games and I yell at the television, shoot it at least 10 times a game. I'm the same way, Drew. And, like, I know teams are arranging their defense to try to keep us from shooting threes. I get that. But we still pass up open ones. And I'll never understand why I yell shoot it at Carr, Brea and Butler. I probably yelled at 10 times Saturday against Auburn.
Drew Franklin
And Brea, who should be the quickest trigger on the team. He's still hesitating a little bit in the second half. There was A play where he was open for three, then he went to drive, then kind of backpedaled to take the threes. Like the moment you have a window, launch it.
Matt Jones
That play drove me crazy. Shoot. Instead he goes up two feet, comes back and shoot. Just shoot. It's the best we're going to get against a team like Auburn.
Drew Franklin
Early in the second half, I genuinely thought they'd be better off pulling up from half court when they were dribbling off their feet and they were driving and throwing it off the backboard and nothing.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it was bad. That stretch at the start of the second half. We needed the TV to go out.
Shannon The Dude
Could dribble it, couldn't make a simple pass.
Matt Jones
It was brutal. Steve. Go ahead, Steve.
E
Hey, guys, what's up? I would love to see our. Our shooters plant coming around that screen and going straight up for the shot. Instead of taking one dribble, which, it's a defense, catch up chances of either making a shot or getting fouled or a whole lot better than making that one dribble and looking for something else.
Matt Jones
Well, they take that dribble for space. But I'm with you. If you think about a lot of the times we've fouled on a three, it's because as soon as they hand off on that pick, they immediately go up and the guy fighting through the pick ends up. He almost can't help but landing on you. That was the foul. That was the foul. That either Bray or oh, way, oh, way. When he fouled on the three, that was what it is. He was fighting through the screen. He didn't probably even see the guy jump to shoot. But because he was fighting through, he was there. He couldn't stop. He landed on him. We should do that. That's actually seemingly a pretty good way to draw a foul.
E
Wasn't that one of Monk specialties was planting that left foot?
Matt Jones
Well, Monk was really good. Yeah, Monk was really good at that. And he also would kind of lean into it. Monk would have loved to play Ryan in the way they call three fouls now. Cause like, guys, he loved to lean into guys on threes.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah. And he could jump so high, he could get the foul and still get the shot.
Matt Jones
You're exactly right. Right. I appreciate the call. Ryan's right. He could jump so high, it would give somebody in time to get under him for him to land on him. He, Monk, would really excel in the way they call that three point foul. Now. Bluegrass. Go ahead.
E
All right, fellas, I think right here's where I'm at. I'm kind of a little bit torn as much as we do love Jackson and how when you have a couple shooters, you know it keeps you from having to slack off and they can help. But if I ask you all, what position could we probably go down and be the best? Wouldn't you probably say you would?
Matt Jones
You would? I think of, of. Of the, of the starting five, which Braya came off the bench. There is an argument that while I do think Robinson might be the best of that group, he's probably the one we could afford to lose the most because those other guys, their replacements are such a huge step down. And in theory, your replacement for Robinson can be brave.
E
Exactly. And I'm not sure if we need to play. I don't know. We can't defend if we do this. But Carr at the 5. But then we take Williams out of the game.
Matt Jones
Yeah, you don't want that.
E
I don't know. I think. Yeah, I think we're just going to have to. Well, I guess we're turned into a high, low team now with Away off the dribble. I guess that's our offense.
Matt Jones
Well, I think that's part that's important. I appreciate the call. I mean, Drew, it's important to us. We got nothing from Away. I mean, OA was in foul trouble. You know, he was kind of. It never looked like he was totally in that game. And so then you don't have Robinson and you get nothing from O way if he has his normal game, it's probably more competitive.
Drew Franklin
And Auburn's so good. I mean, they had the stat that from Ken Palm, they're the best team since 2015 UK and the analytics. So if you're playing that team and away has four points and your team has four three pointers, there's not really any scenario where you're.
Matt Jones
And you have 18 turnovers. Yeah, and 18 turnovers.
Drew Franklin
And some of those turnovers that we mentioned, the first and the first part of the second half, they were unforced. There's like no pressure. And they just threw it away. I mean, it was like, what in the heck are you doing? You just threw it out of bounds for no reason.
Shannon The Dude
There's a point during the radio broadcast where Jack Givens, the number one supporter and cheer of this team, said they look like they don't even know what they're doing.
Matt Jones
They did, though. They did look like they don't know what they're doing now. Did you see what FanDuel tweeted out Shannon?
Ryan Lemond
I did, yeah. Yeah, I did.
Matt Jones
See, first of all, this is why we're a DraftKings show in state. FanDuel said something like, is Pope going to even get it done or something. What was the.
Ryan Lemond
They said it wasn't a mistake to.
Matt Jones
Was it a mistake?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Good way to build up your core there, fanduel.
Drew Franklin
But I. Perry tweet, I have to.
Matt Jones
Tell you, I don't get. I do not understand how fans. And I don't think there are many doing this. I think it's a very small number. But I don't know how there are fans that, like, just don't believe in Pope based on anything. I mean, he put together the team in a month. They've got great wins as Pope. As Pope confirmed. They're four and three against the top five this year, which is pretty amazing. Now, have they been perfect? No. Can I say with a hundred percent certainty, Pope's gonna crush it here? No, but how could you, Ryan, say with a hundred percent certainty he won't work? Like. Like he's done? I think maybe not an A plus job, but an A to A minus job, wouldn't you think?
Shannon The Dude
Yes. And I think I would like to ask those guys if they. If we told them what was going to happen before the season started, they probably would take it. Folks first year thrown together at the last minute, you beat Duke, Louisville, Tennessee, Gonzaga. You're going to take that. You're going to take the season that they're having right now because you're still going to get an insane tournament. You still got a chance to win a couple of games in March. And I think most people would take that.
Matt Jones
And imagine Shannon, if we had had with Cal the game he had at South Carolina.
Ryan Lemond
Oh, my God, no.
Matt Jones
20 points in 30 minutes.
Ryan Lemond
We would fire him at halftime.
Matt Jones
I mean, can you imagine? He said there were 20 points with 11 and a half minutes to go.
Ryan Lemond
I saw that and I go, that can't be real. That. That cannot be a real.
Matt Jones
14 points at halftime.
Shannon The Dude
That's insane.
Drew Franklin
He's owing three against Lamont Paris.
Matt Jones
Boy, Lamont Paris. I saw South Carolina 6 and 5 in their last 11 games against Cal, and they've been. And they've been really bad during those times as well. Robbie, go ahead.
Drew Franklin
There was a report this morning that Bruiser might be leaving, too, so could be someone else jumping off the ship.
Matt Jones
Well, I mean, that's one they could lose. Robbie, go ahead.
E
Good morning. Yeah, good morning, guys. I had a couple things. Yeah. I mean, to your question, I think we can make a little run. I mean, we gotta get some production out of our fence. We gotta start getting some calls because these phantom calls that we're getting on threes or.
Matt Jones
Well, I will note they called more like seven more fouls on our. On Auburn than they did us. I mean, again, they were calls that frustrated me. But we have to stop acting like we're the most aggrieved. I mean, they caused a lot of fouls on Auburn. Most of our points in the first half came from free throws. Right, right.
E
I understand that. But one other thing before. And I'll hang up and listen was is. I know y'all probably seen it, and I think it's one of the most disrespectful things. The Auburn players with the belt out on roughly floor acting like they're spanking.
Matt Jones
Well, let's talk about that. I will save that for after the break. All right. Because I think that's. I'm glad you brought that up. Appreciate the call. We'll come back to that. If you want to score big in the NBA this season and you want a sports betting partner that doesn't make fun of our basketball team, then how about DraftKings? From Monster Slams to dishing the dunk, they're not out there asking if hiring Pope was a mistake. They're giving you a chance to make money. And you can use my code, KSR BET5. Get $150 in bonus bets only at DraftKings. Don't listen to the competitor out there crowing. They're all Louisville fans anyway. Go to DraftKings. The Crown is yours. If you have a game, probably call 1-800-game for 18 plus Kentucky only eligibility restrict supply new customers only bonus specs by 168 hours after issuance for additional term responsible gaming resource cdkng.co/audio. I do want to thank FanDuel for that because it led to the CEO of DraftKings writing me Ryan and saying, hey, we need to talk about a renewal after these people keep.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, thank you, DraftKings.
Matt Jones
Yeah, well, thank you, FanDuel, for the stupid tweet. We'll be right back. KSR, welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. I have to say the two most popular topics on the text machine, Shannon, are we should shoot more threes and those fairy books.
Ryan Lemond
Oh, yeah, Judy called back, by the way. She wanted me to tell you that she is. She likes romance. She just doesn't like romance books. She wants to clarify that.
Matt Jones
All right. Well, Judy, I think you'll like Bel Canto.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I do. Oh, one person, a lot of you are saying, and I get this, that, like, there are various, like, reasons somebody would listen to books instead of reading, including, like, physical or issues or something. And you're. That. You're exactly right. That's a very fair point. I'm not trying to say that one is better than the other. Maybe it is for me, but that may not be true for everybody else. So that's a very fair point. One person writes, matt, I listened to your audiobook. I actually thought it was better than reading it because you and Tomlin made funny voices. That's true. We did. We did make fun of Tomlins. I mean, Tomlin, you got to hear his voice when he did all of his, like, footnotes and stuff.
Ryan Lemond
I would rather somebody read me the book than me have to read it myself.
Matt Jones
Oh, you would? You think you have the patience, though, to sit there and listen to someone read it to you?
Ryan Lemond
Well, I mean, like, if I'm doing other things, like, that's the good thing about an audiobook. Like, I can, you know, do something else.
Matt Jones
And in the car. The other thing is in the car, right?
Ryan Lemond
Like, going down the hop.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I like to have physical copies, partially because I like having a library and all that, but I can see that, Ryan, you and I have listened to podcasts on our road trips that could be books. They're, like, eight hours long. It's just. They call them a podcast.
Shannon The Dude
It's almost like, yeah, somebody's reading the book to us that a couple of podcasts we've listened to. So, yeah, I think that's the. That's the best scenario for me is to do it, be able to do it in the car.
Drew Franklin
I read a book at home, and if I have a long drive, like, say, Nashville, I will then get some chapters on audio and kind of do a little bit of both.
Matt Jones
Makes sense. Makes sense. One person writes, drew, you're gonna like this. Matt, my wife listens to all those books that you're talking about. Like Shannon, she keeps them turned on. It gets her all worked up. So she'll be hitting. She'll be reading or hearing about a werewolf going after a fairy, and then all that's left is me, and I end up getting the benefits.
Drew Franklin
Never helps the marriage.
Matt Jones
There you go.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I'm telling you, my two friends, like, they'll sit there. We, the three of us will go to dinner, and they just talk about it, and they'll be like, oh, did you read in? Blah, blah, blah. Oh, Darren. Oh, my God. And Then they just get Shannon. It just. They get worked up. Right. Sitting there because they're talking about a book they read two weeks ago.
Ryan Lemond
I got to go buy me a werewolf mask.
Matt Jones
You. You think that'll help?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Well, good. By the way, the Outrunners. I don't know what made me think of that, but the Outrunners team won the Summit outright. And they beat up a trash can again. They beat up the trash can.
Ryan Lemond
That is awesome. I saw Shiloh Thursday at ovw. I told him that you gave him a shout out. He appreciated.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Not just here on espn, too. All right, let's talk about the belt thing. Drew. So if you saw the video after the game, two Arkansas, or, excuse me, Auburn players pull out. Pull out belts, and they start smacking the ground to make it look like they were kind of beating the. The ass of the Kentucky players. You know, it was on the. It was on our court. A lot of people got upset about that. What was your take on it?
Drew Franklin
My take is if anyone on this basketball team has an ounce of fight in them, they will come out and whoop lsu, because they should see that and be furious. Not only that, they Got killed for 39 minutes in Rupp Arena. It's a better team. That kind of happens. But to just get mocked like that on your own floor. They better be angry and motivated to come out and do something special tomorrow night. If not, I don't. I don't know if they got the dog in them, to be honest, because that should have set them off.
Matt Jones
Ryan.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah. You can do whatever you want in the locker room, and they did. They were celebrating and rapping and all kinds of stuff in the locker. They, Fine, go ahead and do that on the court, man. You do like that. You better be ready. Don't both. You know, I hope our UK players, like Drew said, don't forget that that was completely disrespectful, and they need to remember that.
Matt Jones
You sound. You sound very offended by it.
Shannon The Dude
I mean, I think, you know, most athletes know you just don't do that. Well, like, we had this argument. Not argument. We had a discussion one time, like, I don't like when football players try to plant their flag in the middle of an opposing team's field. I think it's just a level of respect you got to have for your opponent. Take it back to the locker room. Do whatever you want, but don't do it out there on our court.
Matt Jones
Interesting. Shannon. They're both more upset than I was. Yeah, I kind of took the View. I felt the same way about flag planning. Like, beat him.
Ryan Lemond
You already know my take. You already know what I'm going to say.
Matt Jones
You're going to say the same thing, right? If you don't like it, stop it.
Ryan Lemond
Beat him.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I mean, I.
Ryan Lemond
40 minutes to beat him.
Matt Jones
I just. I mean, we talk. We've never pulled out a belt, but we've done Ls down and we've done yelling at the fans in the stands. We love those moments.
Ryan Lemond
Right?
Matt Jones
How? What's different, Ryan, about L's down. Walking up to the students in the Louisville game and taking out the belt because we lost. I have no problem. Okay. As long as you're consistent. Fair enough.
Drew Franklin
I have no problem with them doing it. Have at. I don't care. In fact, they earned it. I'm saying if I play for Kentucky and I just watch that, I'm coming out on fire today.
Matt Jones
I agree with that.
Drew Franklin
And if the players don't, then they're pretty. And what if we play Auburn and set them off?
Matt Jones
And what if we play Auburn in the sec?
Drew Franklin
Exactly. You should throw the first. Not a literal punch, but if you get Auburn again, you better come out like you're on fire. After watching that, I have no problem with Albert. That should motivate you.
Matt Jones
And they definitely should show that in the locker room. And even I don't think ABC did any favors Shannon to Pope by showing Pope's pregame speech versus Pearls. No. Because even though they Pope's, it just didn't look the same. Now, that could be editing, which was unfair to Pope.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
But Pearl's like, these dudes, did they show up every night? No, we did. You know, it was. It didn't look great. Brock. Go ahead, Brock.
E
I was talking about going on a run. While there's technically no rule against it, they seem to try to make it to where at least if you're on the top four seed lines, you're not going to play anybody in your conference until the Elite Eight. And since we're on the three, four line, that matches us up with Duke, Houston, Iowa State and Michigan State.
Matt Jones
I'm good with those terms of going.
E
On a run, you know, beat the team you're supposed to be. Beat one of those four.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I'm actually not bad. I'm with you on that. They. They don't want to put teams against each other until the Elite Eight. I think I'd rather play Duke, Houston, Iowa State, Michigan State. Overplaying these SEC teams, Brock.
E
Absolutely. Yeah. And that's just what it's going to end up being. And honestly I think the lifeless scenario is or the three seed in Auburn or Alabama's region and the two seed is Michigan State, Iowa State and honestly hope the four seed beats Auburn. That'd be great.
Matt Jones
You're exactly right. Now we got to get to the three seed and I appreciate the call. I now think to get to the three seed. Drew, we probably got to win at Missouri. Not certainly, but I think it would. I think if we were to finish two and oh, here's what I do think. Finish two and oh, I think will be a three seed and I think we'll be paired up with either Michigan State or Iowa State and I'll take it. I think that's the best scenario. I think when they go to Columbia, you have to sit there and think, would you rather play Duke or Houston in a sweet 16 or would you rather play Iowa State or Michigan State? All right, if you want to play Iowa State or Michigan State, you got to go win at Missouri. Yeah.
Drew Franklin
And I think it's gotta. If you're going lsu, if you go win that one, it's. I don't know. It's going to help you too much because right now they're the last four seed in Lunardis. That's not going to make you jump enough. So if you want to get a three, you got to go two. And oh, I thought that they fell pretty far even just losing Auburn to the last number four seed, at least in Lenardi's eyes. But you got to get Missouri to get.
Matt Jones
It's the first four seat. Right. They're the third.
Drew Franklin
Oh, I'm sorry. Well then I read it wrong. Regardless, just beating LSU will not move you up a line.
Matt Jones
All right, there you go. 859-280228. So I just, I don't. I mean, look, Houston's really good, Duke's really good, but I'd rather play them than play Auburn and I'd rather them play them than play Florida. And honestly, Ryan, rather play them than play Alabama. Wouldn't you?
Shannon The Dude
I was going to say, yeah, give me those other non SEC teams. We've seen what SEC teams can do.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I mean, our problem is going to be scoring enough points and I don't want to play these teams that are going to score 85 no matter what. We'll take a break. I have a really good clip to play at least. I think it's a really good play right after this. KSI.
