Nmlsconsumeraccess.Org welcome to hour two of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Ryan Lemond
Welcome back Tech Sports Radio 859-280-2287 here on Oaks Day. You know I'd love to talk to you folks, but we also have a lot to say. So Kentucky Joe's on. I mean I guess we'll let him do his Oaks pick.
Shannon The Dude
This is one KSR Oaks tradition.
Ryan Lemond
He's good at it of the year so I'll let him do that. But other otherwise we'll probably keep keep flying through. Patino's not on the phone, I assume, is that right?
Matt Jones
No. You think I put Kentucky Joe ahead of Patino?
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, yeah. Sorry Rick, it's Oaks Day. You gotta wait.
Matt Jones
We gotta have Kentucky Joe.
Ryan Lemond
People are saying to me and I've heard this version that they like Towns Van Zant's version of Dead Flowers. Better play that at the next segment. Okay, Shannon. And we can see if people. I love towns. Van Zandt. I don't know if I would say it's. It's better. I was just outside showing Mario, you know, my house. We're not gonna say what street we're on, but he laughed about one of the funniest parts about my house, which is they took this little plot of land next to my house, and they called it a park.
Shannon The Dude
Very little that's supposed to be a park.
Ryan Lemond
No, it has a name. I'm not gonna say what it is, but, like, that is. Is officially a park.
Drew Franklin
Has two benches, so.
Mario
Yeah, well, it couldn't fit anymore.
Ryan Lemond
How long through, like. Listen, I. I've. I love this neighborhood. I've been here for 20 or 18 years. That is not a park.
Mario
It's not a park.
Ryan Lemond
What would you call it? It's a plot of land. It's, like four houses of land, but small land.
Mario
I'd call it your side yard, your yard.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, side yard, exactly.
Ryan Lemond
But it is a Lexington city park, and people will. Excuse me. Louisville. People in the neighborhood call it the. The park.
Drew Franklin
Do people go there and sit? Like, at the.
Ryan Lemond
Yes.
Drew Franklin
Oh, my God.
Shannon The Dude
There. People that go there.
Ryan Lemond
Yes, it's a park, but what do they do?
Drew Franklin
Sit, enjoy nature, and then you can't do any activities.
Ryan Lemond
There's one little path that I think. I'd say that path is literally not even a block long. Would you agree with that?
Shannon The Dude
Less than a half a block, probably.
Mario
You can't even, like, throw a Frisbee or a football.
Ryan Lemond
No. There's nothing you can do in that park.
Shannon The Dude
But you go and sit.
Ryan Lemond
I don't.
Shannon The Dude
But people do.
Ryan Lemond
There are people who will. There are people who will walk their dog in that park, in the yard.
Drew Franklin
All right, that took part.
Mario
That took two minutes. What do they do with the rest?
Ryan Lemond
I don't know. I see people all the time. They take their kids and they play.
Shannon The Dude
Do they have a little picnic?
Ryan Lemond
I've never seen a picnic. But there are people that go there, and they call it the park. It's got a sign that said, preserve our parks, Shannon.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
And it's. They just. It used to just be vacant land. And then they one day were like, we need a park. And they said, they call it a park. It has to be the smallest park in America.
Matt Jones
What are you doing to preserve the park?
Ryan Lemond
I don't just preserve it by asking them to please not come in my yard.
Shannon The Dude
Okay, you've lived here for 18 years. Have you ever stepped foot in the park?
Ryan Lemond
I go up the handicap ramp sometimes. To avoid my stairs. You see there's a handicap ramp there.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
And if I do that, if I just don't want to walk up the stairs, like, if I'm. If I, like, have a suitcase, I'm rolling or something, I'll roll it up the handicap ramp.
Mario
I guess it's good for property value. You're overlooking a park. I mean.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, it looks good on you.
Ryan Lemond
Think you should say overlooking a park.
Shannon The Dude
Beautiful park right next door. Enjoy the beautiful setting.
Ryan Lemond
If people are ever, like, people in this. That. If you're listening in Louisville, in the Highlands, you know what I'm talking about. Because I think it's a. It's a. It's a regular joke that they call that a park, because Louisville has great parks. Like, Louisville has one of the best park systems probably of any city. I mean, there Cherokee park, and there's Iroquois. I mean, there's a lot of parks.
Shannon The Dude
But that ain't one of them that I would.
Ryan Lemond
That one, though, is on the list. So when they talk about all the parks, they'll be like, Louisville has 45 parks. Just remember, they count this as well.
Mario
They're patent stats. Get their park numbers up the mat.
Ryan Lemond
Yard park over here also. I was showing Mario a picture. That's the picture of me, Ryan and Drew when we went to Alaska.
Shannon The Dude
The Alaskan cruise.
Ryan Lemond
What year was that that we took a KSR Alaska cruise?
Mario
2013.
Ryan Lemond
2013, 2014.
Shannon The Dude
Something in that area.
Ryan Lemond
I don't know why we've never done another one of those.
Mario
I was running back in a heartbeat.
Ryan Lemond
It was awesome.
Shannon The Dude
So much fun.
Ryan Lemond
We had a KSR cruise, invited the listeners. Probably had what, 40 or 50 listeners.
Mario
Go, still, stay in touch. See a lot of them.
Ryan Lemond
We didn't even really advertise it. And people went. So if we really advertised it now.
Shannon The Dude
They sold out the allotment of hundreds.
Ryan Lemond
Of people to go set it up. But we went to an Alaska cruise, and we. We went all the way up and down the. The bay and, like, looked at the glacier. It was great. But my memory of it is basically, Mario, that Drew got a stalker on the trip.
Mario
That's wild on that trip.
Ryan Lemond
So, Drew, it was an old people trip, right. When you go to Alaska. The other people on the boat outside the KSR group were all old.
Shannon The Dude
You guys are the youngest.
Mario
I was the youngest person on the boat.
Ryan Lemond
We were by. Drew and I were by far the youngest people in the boat. Drew almost certainly was. Was the youngest person on the boat at night. They had a bar, a lounge. You could go Right. And they would do karaoke, and there was a woman. How old do you think that woman was? So you were probably at the time, 29, 28?
Mario
Yeah. Mid. Mid to late 20s.
Ryan Lemond
And how old do you think that woman was?
Mario
Close to 50.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. Late 40s, early 50s.
Mario
Yeah, put her in the 40s somewhere.
Ryan Lemond
She fell in love with Drew.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
And she would dedicate her karaoke songs every night to Drew just singing. Even though, like, we really had never talked.
Mario
I didn't even y. I didn't have.
Ryan Lemond
Any interaction, but she had decided that she loved her.
Drew Franklin
She's in love.
Mario
She wouldn't break eye contact while she was.
Ryan Lemond
She would sing karaoke and look directly into his eyes.
Shannon The Dude
Very uncomfortable.
Ryan Lemond
And it was. She would sing. The big song was Walk Away Joe, because she said he was a Walk Away Joe because he kept walking away from her.
Mario
I would get to the other side of the boat as quickly as possible.
Drew Franklin
You never actually talked to her, and.
Ryan Lemond
We did talk to her once, and she doesn't have a home. She just travels on cruise ships.
Shannon The Dude
I forgot that part of the story.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, she said, like, well, I mean, she may have a home, but she's like, I don't have any home base. The world is my home. She's traveling, and she just travels, and she goes. I meet. I think she looks for a Drew on every boat. And she would sing to him. And so every time I hear Walkaway Joe, I think about Drew and his lady.
Mario
Well, I did talk to her because she invited me to the spa, and I never had a massage, and it's very expensive on this cruise ship. So I thought, oh, you went?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. I'm like, it's a little forgot you went to the spa.
Mario
I'm like, all right. She can't abduct me on a cruise ship. It's 11am how much trouble can we get in at 11am yeah. So I told her I'd meet her there. She's gonna put it on her tab, whatever I wanted. I'd never even been to a spa.
Ryan Lemond
He was a sugar baby.
Mario
So I get there, and the people greet me, and they're like, she's waiting for you. I'm like, okay, that's fine. I just gonna get this massage, you know, probably go see my friends after this, but just had to stand there, and she would pick up an oil and smell it and look at me like, no, that's not him. And then they'd hand her a different one, and she'd smell it. She'd be like, no, that's not him either. And just went through all these oils trying to find. I didn't stay. I left. I didn't even get the massage. I was out.
Ryan Lemond
Oh, you. I didn't know you left.
Mario
It was too much. I mean, I was just standing there with two masseuse people and her staring at me, trying to figure out which smell I was.
Ryan Lemond
If you ever hear the song walk away, Joe, just think about this woman singing to Drew directly on our way into Alaska. That was a great trip, though. We got to do that again.
Shannon The Dude
What was the song? That wishy washy song they sang when.
Mario
You had to sanitize, you had to sing a wishy washy song.
Shannon The Dude
Wishy washy.
Ryan Lemond
I don't remember that. I do remember us performing ymca.
Shannon The Dude
Yes.
Mario
Oh, yeah.
Shannon The Dude
Sweet Caroline.
Ryan Lemond
We all had. We all had to dress. We dressed as the village People.
Mario
Oh, I can send you those photos.
Drew Franklin
I've got the picture of that. I gotta see that.
Shannon The Dude
Oh, I've got that picture of you guys.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, I was. I think I was the construct construction worker. I don't know what Drew was, but we. We all. We performed.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Mario
Mario, we'll send you these for a throwback Thursday.
Ryan Lemond
It was quite. It was quite a thing.
Mario
So let's run it back.
Ryan Lemond
859-280-2287. Shannon, I have a story for you about baseball I wanted your take on.
Matt Jones
Okay, let's hear it.
Ryan Lemond
Umpires this year are more precise and correct on their ball strike calls than in the history of baseball. They are getting 93% of the called pitches correct, the highest number ever since being recorded.
Shannon The Dude
Wow.
Ryan Lemond
And so you would ask why? Well, the. The athletic reported yesterday that major league baseball this off season told the umpires that their grace zone was going away. So it used to be they would be graded. Think about the strike zone, right? And if the ball was two inches in either direction from the strike zone, from the gray zone, even if they called it wrong, they would get grace. Basically, they were giving them 2 inches to be wrong. That makes sense.
Shannon The Dude
That's a lot of. You go all around the plate.
Ryan Lemond
Exactly. Now they've changed it to point 75 inches. And even though the standard has become harder, the arms are becoming even more accurate.
Shannon The Dude
Wow.
Ryan Lemond
And why is that? And the conclusion, the article is the umpires, A, got better because they knew they'd be graded harder, but B, decided that things like above emotion were getting out of it. You have to just call the ball or the strike.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
And that, of course, leads to the conclusion, Shannon, that for years, umpires could have done better, but didn't, presumably. I would say, Shannon, because of personal biases. Oh, right.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I mean, like those Braves pitchers. Glavin used to get 6 inches off the plate.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Call it a strike.
Ryan Lemond
So. So now this year, they've had the best. And the hitters. The managers have said they have learned guys are taking more pitches because they know the tight strike zone. The strike zone hasn't changed, but the grace umpires get for getting it wrong has been cut in half, and they're now. But presumably, by raising standards, the umpires have gotten better at doing it.
Shannon The Dude
See, I. My mind totally went the other way while umpires got better. I thought because, you know, they. They were going to take their job away and just have an automated robot.
Ryan Lemond
No, I think. I do think that's part of it.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Minor league is doing that. The automatic balls and strikes where they have an earpiece.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. What the umpire. But what the umpires have done, even though they cut in half the amount of grace you get in your call, the umpires have gotten better, which means ultimately, they could have gotten better before. They just didn't have an incentive to do it.
Mario
They got way too comfortable. Way too comfortable. They're starting to get graded. Are watching a little closer. It's like when a secret shopper comes in at your work. You know, you got to get focused. And I agree with Ryan. They probably see the. The robots over their shoulder, like, we better tighten this up, get a little more accurate, or we'll be out of here.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. It's like when in Caddyshack where they look at the caddies and said, we're all gonna be replaced by golf carts if you don't straighten up. I just found that it would seem to be the opposite of common sense. Common sense would say if you made the standards harder, it would be harder to meet them, and they might get worse. But instead, even by making it harder, they got more better.
Shannon The Dude
That's crazy.
Ryan Lemond
So I just thought that was a little tidbit there. And then second, before I go to Kentucky, Joe Luca. Did you watch the final game? Anthony Edwards. And did you watch that?
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
Luca got beat.
Drew Franklin
No defense.
Mario
I like Luca. Zero effort defensively.
Drew Franklin
Offense is great. And then defense, you just. You can't watch it.
Ryan Lemond
I mean, I could have scored. Like he is. He. He's just gotten awful after the game. JJ Redick said, some people on our team have got to get in better shape, championship shape. Which direction has to be about him, because LeBron doesn't have an inch like an ounce of fat.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, yeah.
Ryan Lemond
Do you think Luca will ever stop being fat?
Drew Franklin
See the headlines shouldn't even be that. But yeah, yeah, he has. If he wants to win a championship, yeah, he has.
Ryan Lemond
And that' why the Mavericks traded him. Apparently they didn't think he would get in shape and they thought as he got older that weight will make him worse. Could the Mavericks maybe getting some redemption here as he's.
Mario
I think Nico Harrison needs to go on a tour of flexing and patting himself on the back saying, I told you all this was going to be a problem. Now still a bad trade, but he at least has a moment to say, this is what I was talking about.
Ryan Lemond
Charles Barkley said he's the worst good player defender in the history of basketball. He's like, there have been worse defenders, but you'll never see a dude who's an elite player who's worse on defense than Luca. Do you agree with that?
Shannon The Dude
I'll trust his opinion more than mine. But you would think in the playoffs it's where he would at least attempt to play a little.
Drew Franklin
He doesn't even give the effort near the playoffs.
Ryan Lemond
LeBron is 40, so he's slower now. So they just can't guard anybody. So I do wonder if in five years people will go, well, maybe we were. Because you know how many games Dallas won in the playoffs this year?
Drew Franklin
How many just to play and playing. They didn't make it. Huh?
Mario
They won one playing game.
Ryan Lemond
They won one play.
Mario
You had to win two.
Ryan Lemond
You know how many the Lakers won this year?
Mario
One.
Ryan Lemond
One.
Shannon The Dude
Wow.
Ryan Lemond
Now, I mean, I'm just saying the Lakers would. Fans would say, well, we did it for the future. But if he is fat and smoking a cigarette at 28, drinking beer at halftime, drinking. Maybe, maybe that won't. Maybe that won't work. Kentucky Joe. How are you, Kentucky Joe?
Kentucky Joe
I'm doing fine. It's. It's Kentucky Oaks day.
Ryan Lemond
Okay.
Kentucky Joe
And the thing is, I think. I think our friend who loves KSR, I have a very good feeling that Mr. Brad Crux is going to win today.
Ryan Lemond
But what about our horse? We have a horse, Joe. It's called simply joking. What about it?
Kentucky Joe
He'll probably come second or third. He'll be in the super factor.
Ryan Lemond
So which horse is your horse?
Kentucky Joe
Probably. Yeah, I probably have good cheer, good cheers. Okay, that's a greater run. It's one, what, four or five races in a row. And I'm also looking. I'm looking for tomorrow to be. It's probably going to be long shot day that's what I'm thinking tomorrow.
Ryan Lemond
What do you got?
Kentucky Joe
It's called. It's gonna be Mutters. Gonna be in the first three horse, maybe four horses.
Ryan Lemond
All right. You still haven't given me a name.
Kentucky Joe
For what? What for?
Ryan Lemond
I mean, appreciate the call.
Matt Jones
For what?
Ryan Lemond
For what?
Mario
I was really excited about that call.
Matt Jones
Thought maybe we'd get a song.
Shannon The Dude
He's pretty good at it, actually.
Ryan Lemond
We just got him picking the favorite in the Oaks against our horse. I blame you for that. Shannon. Stop over, pay for sunglasses. Check out Shady Rays. Independent American owned company. Welcome back, Tucky Sports Radio. I like town's Van Zant, Shannon. I like his voice, but I still like the. You know, maybe because I heard the Rolling Stones version first.
Matt Jones
You know, this is slower.
Ryan Lemond
This is slower.
Matt Jones
I like the Stones version.
Ryan Lemond
Little sad. Although song sad. It's about doing heroin on Derby day.
Shannon The Dude
I guess the Rolling Stones did it at Churchill Downs.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. He says he's like. He's talking about his ex, and his ex is, like, riding around in a Cadillac making bets on Derby Day. And he's in his basement room with a needle and a spoon. I. I don't. I'm assuming that's what he meant.
Matt Jones
I never paid attention to the words.
Ryan Lemond
You never paid attention to the words?
Matt Jones
Not really.
Ryan Lemond
The point is, his wife is like. Or his ex girlfriend is, like, living this high life, and his life is sad. Right? And then you can send me dead. I send your dead flowers by the mail. Send me dead flowers at my wedding, but I won't forget to put roses on your grave. His point is, you hate me. You would send me dead flowers in the mail, but I still, when you die, would put roses on your grave.
Matt Jones
So it's like while he's doing heroin. Wow.
Ryan Lemond
Well, it's not about the heroine. He's just like. He's still in love with his. His life has collapsed.
Matt Jones
Gotcha.
Ryan Lemond
She's living a life of luxury, but he still would put roses on her grave even though she mails him dead flowers in the mail.
Drew Franklin
That is so deep.
Mario
What are you gonna do with it? What are you gonna do with all these dead flowers in your living room? You're Gonna mail these to anyone?
Ryan Lemond
Send them to some ex girlfriend? No, I would never do that. Derby week is here. So get to DK horse. Here's what we got to do again. Remember, go to Kate. Use KSR Horse on DK Horse. If you bet $5 or more on a horse to win the derby and it wins, you will get your. Your share of a million dollar prize pool. Now, let me be clear about this, because I'm gonna explain it to like, I'm explaining it to Ryan. All right, Ryan.
Shannon The Dude
Yes.
Ryan Lemond
You go to K. You go to DK sportsbook.
Shannon The Dude
Yes.
Ryan Lemond
If you haven't put my. If you haven't put any money in yet, use KSR horse.
Shannon The Dude
KSR horse.
Ryan Lemond
But the very first bet you pip put on the derby to win the first one, that's yours.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
It's got to be $5.
Shannon The Dude
All right?
Ryan Lemond
So if you, you bet two horses to win, you'll only share the prize pool if the first. First bet.
Shannon The Dude
Gotcha.
Ryan Lemond
Does that make sense?
Shannon The Dude
Yes.
Ryan Lemond
And I would argue if you pick a horse that's a little bit of a longer shot, that wins. Got a chance to get more of the prize.
Shannon The Dude
Right?
Ryan Lemond

Mario
Nailed it. I made my deposit this morning. You know, it's fun to go to the window, but I'm going to be deep.
Ryan Lemond
I go all day, have to go to the window. The window is a part of the experience. Go up and give them the cash, then get it back and then get back in line. It's like part of the. It's part of the experience, though, don't you think?
Shannon The Dude
It is part of the experience. So they're at Keeneland or Churchill. It's going up to the window.
Ryan Lemond
One person writes, I know Ryan used to be on television for the derby all the time. You guys have been. I'm going tomorrow for the first time. Best and worst things to do at the derby. We already told you 1. Best walk around the neighborhoods. Worst is the infield. The infield is absolute.
Shannon The Dude
And they've taken away a lot of it. Now haven't they?
Mario
Yeah, they've classed up the joint a little bit. I mean, it's still the infield, but people dress up now. They do, yeah.
Ryan Lemond
In the infield.
Shannon The Dude
It's like $100 to give and get in the infield.
Mario
Now they've kind of taken away a lot of the debauchery. The running on the porta potties, the throwing news anchor.
Ryan Lemond
Why would you go in there? You can't even see.
Mario
I agree. I mean, it's still the infield. You can still find the trouble if you want it. But they have class it up quite a bit.
Ryan Lemond
Well, I mean, I hated it, but I still think it should be there. Like, you gotta. You gotta let people have a chance to run wild. You used to get assigned to the infield. You hate it, right?
Shannon The Dude
That's the. The worst part about going to the derby is going to the derby.
Ryan Lemond
To me, what does that mean?
Shannon The Dude
I mean, we'd have to get there like at 6:30 in the morning, broadcast all day, not leave till the race was over at like 8:00. It was the most ridiculous longest day. I hated it.
Ryan Lemond
What was your. Where were your assignments during it?
Shannon The Dude
Well, I got to the point where I was on. I was on top of the roof outside of Millionaires Row. Mary Jo and me or Cutler and.
Ryan Lemond
Me or somebody to meet Millionaires.
Shannon The Dude
I almost bowled over Jessica Simpson. I think I've told that story before.
Mario
No, let's hear it again.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, that's when they.
Ryan Lemond
Of course you don't. How do you know she had CDs.
Shannon The Dude
She was doing a. That reality show with her and Nick Lachey. They were newlyweds.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Shannon The Dude
So they were up there in Millionaires Row. I was sick as a dog. I was so sick. And so I was going into the bathroom, take a break, and I walked through with my head down and bam. I bumped into her and I kind of shook. Oh, I'm so sorry. Saw the cameras were all over the place. I thought, well, that's gonna be on their reality show. No, of course. Thank you. Not Janet Jackson.
Ryan Lemond
Oh, you did?
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, Janet Jackson. And she was with Jermaine Dupree at the time.
Ryan Lemond
But you didn't embarrass you because you had a thing for Janet Jackson.
Shannon The Dude
I did and I wanted to, but we were like, instructed. Do not interact when you go to the restroom. Do not interact with those people.
Ryan Lemond
They instruct when you go to the restroom. Don't interact with people.
Shannon The Dude
Tell you this. They said you're not supposed to make eye contact with Janet.
Ryan Lemond
Okay.
Shannon The Dude
All right. I'm serious. I. You think I'm joking?
Ryan Lemond
No. Wait a minute. They said don't make eye contact with her.
Shannon The Dude
The employees there, and they told us you're not supposed to make eye contact with Janet.
I
For him.
Ryan Lemond
Just right.
Shannon The Dude
Kid Rock and was dating Pamela Anderson.
Ryan Lemond
Oh, wow.
Shannon The Dude
And they came in together, and Mary Jo loves Kid Rock.
Ryan Lemond
Really?
Shannon The Dude
She loves Kid Rock.
Ryan Lemond
And she doesn't seem like her type.
Mario
Well, she's always been a Kid Rock.
Shannon The Dude
Oh, Loves it. So she starts screaming at him, kid.
Ryan Lemond
Rock, I love you. I love you. Mary Jo did that?
Shannon The Dude
Yes.
Ryan Lemond
Wow.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
Okay, so who are the celebrities? Are always there. You always get Kid Rock. He comes every year. Travis Tritt, Nick Lachey.
Mario
If you're talking Barnstable, you got Joey Fatone.
Ryan Lemond
Joey Fatone's always boys to men. Yeah, boys to men.
Mario
Aaron Rodgers and Randall Cobb. Always have a collection. Former packers with them.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, Brady's there a lot.
Mario
The Brady Crew.
Ryan Lemond
Edelman Portnoy. Who else? The Travis Tritt. Never misses it.
Shannon The Dude
He's always there.
Ryan Lemond
He just wants him to continue. Now you're on the red carpet tomorrow.
Drew Franklin
I am not, actually.
Ryan Lemond
Oh, you got.
Drew Franklin
I was, but my credential says I'm not on red carpet.
Ryan Lemond
So where are you?
Drew Franklin
Everywhere else but the red carpet.
Ryan Lemond
So he's assigned to, like, do crowd interviews. And Billy is once again assigned the jockeys.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, he's taller than all of them.
Ryan Lemond
I love it. That's the one. That's why he goes there. It's the only place he feels tall at all. We're gonna give you your picks. We're gonna bring an expert on here in just a second. It's KSI. TJ Smith, personal injury attorney. Call tj. He'll make him pay.
Matt Jones
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Ryan Lemond
Not to follow you like this. You like this song?
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I love it, man.
Ryan Lemond
You know who it is?
Matt Jones
Like, no.
Drew Franklin
Who is it?
Ryan Lemond
Sawyer Brown.
Matt Jones
Do you like his version or George Jones better? I kind of like this version.
Ryan Lemond
I kind of like this one. I like voice, but I like how this one's kind of upbeat, so I. I do. I love Sawyer Brown. We just got ponchos because it may rain today. Just for the record, Johnny Avello is joining us. He's the Draft Kings director of race and sports operations. Johnny, is your first time on the show. Somebody tell me it sounded in the background like you were playing slot machines. Are you playing slot machines in the background?
I
That's my computer. Keeps updating me with emails that are Just constant.
Shannon The Dude
So yeah, there it is.
Ryan Lemond
How many emails are you getting, Johnny?
I
Oh, it looks like one every seven seconds.
Ryan Lemond
About what?
I
Remember Draftka DraftKings is involved in a lot of things, so a lot of sports going on there.
Ryan Lemond
Wow, Johnny's getting some info, isn't he? We got. I need to see these emails, Johnny. All right, Johnny is first time on the show so we're hoping for big time picks. Let's start with Oaks day today. Besides the big race which we'll do. Just a minute. Give me on the undercard your best bet of the day. Something these listeners can go. All right, Johnny Avello says it, I'm doing it now.
I
You're saying the. The Oaks itself. Is that what you know?
Ryan Lemond
I said the undercard, Johnny. Anything but the undercard of that day.
I
Okay. I actually haven't dove into that too much today. I have dove into. I'll give you something on the undercard for Saturday.
Drew Franklin
Okay.
Ryan Lemond
All right, well let's. We'll get to I then forget and scratch that. That's okay. Let's just do the Oaks. What do you like in the Oaks, Johnny?
I
I like Quiet side in the Oaks. He is coming out of an outside post but she love the way he's coming into the race with a couple of paired great races and I look for him to move up here. I know Licara has been training great and loves the track. I've seen the workouts are amazing. So also I'll also be using Lucara in some exact is with Quiet side and of course I can't keep out good cheer the the, you know, the short favorite but gonna try to beat her today because she's done everything right, you know or I'm looking for something, you know, try to enhance that price.
Ryan Lemond
I wanted your honest opinion but I don't know if anybody told you we are we're part owners of Simply Joking so I'm gonna assume that your pick, you were Simply joking and then in the end you like Simply Joking in the two, is that correct?
I
I like Simply Joking. I have Simply Joking Mark. Simply Joking ran well on a. On an off track so you know, I think probably gonna be off today and Simply Joking come into the race has done nothing wrong. Couple of wins a second and the numbers look real good. So nothing wrong with Simply Joking.
Shannon The Dude
There we go.
Ryan Lemond
He's a mudder and his mudder was a mutter and like here we go simply. I didn't realize he'd run it on off track Ryan. There you go.
Shannon The Dude
Wasn't that exciting And Maybe an off.
Ryan Lemond
Track today, depending on what happens with the run. All right, so now let's go to the undercard on Saturday. Johnny, you do have a pick on the undercard on Saturday for the Derby. What do you like?
I
Let's see now. I do like. Well, my computer, like you just said, kind of went off on me here. So let me find that for you again.
Ryan Lemond
It's all right. Take your time. We're good. Just on the right.
Mario
Yeah.
I
Well, let's start with the Derby, then. I'll find that one.
Ryan Lemond
Okay.
I
How's that?
Ryan Lemond
All right, let's start with the Derby then, John.
I
Okay, the Derby. You know, by the time this race goes off, we could be down to 17 horses. So, you know, I'm going to give you the horses, of course, I think will be in the mix. Journalism should be in the mix. Sovereignty should be in the mix. These horses were, you know, just coming into this race perfectly. They love the track down there, but you have to look for some horses underneath to try to make that, you know, get a good payoff if you're betting tries and supers. Some of those horses I'll be looking at underneath are East Avenue, who was when probably the Derby favorite, going back to last August, last October or so, but just had a rough time in a couple of races. The trainer couldn't figure it out. I think that horse could be in the mix today. I like Publisher Underneath, too, because Publisher seems to like the track down there. Although Publisher is a maiden, and a maiden hasn't won this race for probably 90 years or so. Burnham Square is another I like underneath there. So those are the horses I'll be using underneath those top two.
Ryan Lemond
All right, Johnny, I still got to know how you get seven emails a second at some point, but thank you very much for your time. Enjoy what I think are two of the best days of horse betting of the year. Johnny Avello.
I
Okay, well, you didn't get my other pick on the undercar. I'll just give it to you quick. It's Zulu Kingdom in ninth in the American turf.
Ryan Lemond
Zulu Kingdom in the American turf. All right, I appreciate it. I'm betting that one for you. And if we win, I'll send you an email. Okay?
Matt Jones
Hold on.
I
Please don't. I got enough.
Ryan Lemond
Thank you, Johnny. Appreciate it.
I
Bye, guys.
Ryan Lemond
There you go. Johnny Villon.
Matt Jones
Is he answering all those emails?
Ryan Lemond
Did he know he was going to be on the show?
Drew Franklin
I don't know.
Mario
It's a lot of emails.
Shannon The Dude
That was one of the worst, best interviews we've ever Done.
Drew Franklin
I thought it was good.
Ryan Lemond
Let me tell you why he thought it was good.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
Mario's the one that scheduled it.
Matt Jones
Oh, yeah, yeah, I know that was Mario.
Drew Franklin
Y'all thought it was bad.
Mario
Good producing Mario.
Ryan Lemond
He's fine. I didn't seem like he knew he was going to be on the radio.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I talked to the rat that connected him. I didn't talk to him directly, so. But I thought it was pretty good.
Mario
Good job, Mario. A plus for me.
Drew Franklin
Thank you, Drew.
Mario
It was very enlightening, especially like Ryan saying she.
Shannon The Dude
He kept talking about the race computer.
Ryan Lemond
Locked up in the middle.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, well, they getting all those emails.
Ryan Lemond
Busy, man.
Shannon The Dude
Seven emails a second.
Ryan Lemond
Seven emails.
Matt Jones
I think I said one email every seven seconds, but a lot of emails.
Ryan Lemond
One email every seven seconds. I mean, just. If you just do the math, that's like eight and a half emails a minute.
Matt Jones
That's the first thing I heard before he even said hello. When I called him off the air was just bells ringing.
Ryan Lemond
That's 510 emails in an hour. I just. No offense, I'm throwing a challenge flag on that. Johnny, you do. Although it did beep a lot, Even during. Even during that interview.
Mario
I think he's not using a spam filter. It's like Bed, Bath and beyond coupons. Well, a bunch of stuff you don't even need. I think we could actually help his efficiency.
Shannon The Dude
We can all attest we get a lot of emails from DraftKings every single day.
Ryan Lemond
Do get a lot of emails. As you should, Mario. The thing was, Shannon, Mario came up to me and said, I got the perfect guest for next week. And I was like, who is he? Goes, oh, it's my dog, Johnny.
Mario
That's what he did when he told.
Ryan Lemond
You, that's my dog, you gave me a roof.
Drew Franklin
I did not.
Ryan Lemond
How do you know him?
Drew Franklin
Well, Rachel connected. You know, Rachel wanted him on, so he's like, we definitely get him on.
Mario
All right, again, great job, Mario. Great job.
Drew Franklin
Thank you, Drew.
Shannon The Dude
Good producing.
Ryan Lemond
All I'm gonna remember about that, since he did pick the favorite in both races, is he did say Zulu Kingdom. So that's gonna be Mario. That's your pick.
Drew Franklin
Zulu King.
Ryan Lemond
If Zulu Kingdom doesn't win tomorrow, you have to run a lap around the dirt.
Shannon The Dude
Oh, boy.
Drew Franklin
I don't know about all that, but.
Ryan Lemond
Like, if he gets it, if Zulu Kingdom wins, then you just gave everybody. That ends up being big for him. So, yes, you should be proud if that happens.
Drew Franklin
See if it happens.
Shannon The Dude
It was a little odd. Our horse racing expert had looked at the undercard on today's card at Churchill Down. That was. That was just a little odd.
Mario
Did you not hear the emails? He's busy.
Drew Franklin
He's a busy man.
Matt Jones
I said, we want your best undercard pick. And he goes, oh, the underguard. Oh, I looked at it.
Shannon The Dude
Maybe it's something the horse racing expert will probably do.
Ryan Lemond

Drew Franklin
Not.
Ryan Lemond
Not.
Drew Franklin
Not yet. Not yet.
Ryan Lemond
Take a break. Be right back. Turn it off.
Mario
Turn it off.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Shannon The Dude
It was so creepy.
Matt Jones
You haven't flashbacks, Drew.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. I'm like. I'm just gonna stare in Drew's eyes. Oh, that's her. Wow.
Mario
Picture a memory.
Ryan Lemond
Oh, look at that picture.
Mario
Look at that perm, man.
Ryan Lemond
That was a part. Look at you. You look young in that picture.
Mario
Young and look like I ate the whole buffet that night.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. Oh, she loved you.
Shannon The Dude
So creepy.
Drew Franklin
So she played this song. This is the song she's saying.
Ryan Lemond
All right. One person writes, matt, y'all are zigging. I'm gonna zag. I'm betting all of Johnny Avello's picks in order. I already put in my trifecta box with his 5 is. Can't wait till it hits. And I'm tweeting Johnny. There you go. Who. Who. Who is he again?
Drew Franklin
I looked him up. He's all over Google. He's the director of.
Shannon The Dude
He's all over Google.
Ryan Lemond
What does that mean? He's all over Google? Everyone's all over Google.
Drew Franklin
Some people are, some people aren't.
Matt Jones
I can't find any social media at all.
Ryan Lemond
You. You know who's all over Google? The dude who got arrested who won the lottery. That doesn't. It doesn't mean anything.
Drew Franklin
He's the director of racing sports, though, so.
Mario
Again, great job, Mario. Great job, Mario.
Drew Franklin
I enjoyed the interview. I enjoyed.
Ryan Lemond
I enjoyed it, too, but it was I enjoyed it.
Shannon The Dude
I knew where it was going. When you said something about his email dinging, he said, yeah, well, you know, DraftKings is in a lot of stuff.
Mario
Got the bag gal on Monday.
Ryan Lemond
One person writes, Matt, I think most of the emails of Ryan locked out of his password@iheart. That's probably right.
Shannon The Dude
That could be true. Emailing DraftKings. Okay, I locked out again.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. We have a friend, I'm not gonna say his name but who bet on the NBA all star game, Team Shaq versus Team Candace on a serious bet. And it he argued the result. It was like plus seven. And he argued the results and was angrily tweeting DraftKings that he should be paid out for his team Candice versus Team Sh. Shaq bet. And I'm venturing to say that those emails are all my friend asking him if he can win his team Candace and his team Shaq bet.
Mario
I think there were requests for radio interviews today. That's all coming through.
Ryan Lemond
Nice job.
Mario
Good job, Mario.
Ryan Lemond
All right, so the ready to make an Oaks pick. Simply joking.
Mario
There's only one horse in the race.
Ryan Lemond
I mean, we have to pick this horse. Everybody, all the folks listening. It's right now the third favorite. I believe it's nine to one. But the favorite is Good Cheer and it's a heavy favorite. So we just have to hope that Good Cheer is get. For some reason it's not his day, her day. And. And then here we go. Simply joking. And then what an exciting thing that would be.
Shannon The Dude
Well, I guess you could probably just do a lot of your exact is and try.
Ryan Lemond
I'm not here to come in second.
Shannon The Dude
Okay.
Ryan Lemond
We own this horse.
Shannon The Dude
That's very true.
Ryan Lemond
This is not about just winning a bet.
Shannon The Dude
If she gets on the board though, I'll be happy.
Ryan Lemond
Just. No, no, I'm gonna. I'm probably gonna make some bets that include her in second or third. But we're here to win. Mario always does LeBron come to make a good showing?
Shannon The Dude
Luca does.
Mario
You play to win the game.
Ryan Lemond
You play the way. So what happens if we win? Well, we're going to be at the track. We're going to be going crazy. Mario will probably be filming us going crazy.
Matt Jones
How much do we win?
Ryan Lemond
Well, I mean, you win the bet. It's on the. It's on the app. It'll tell you what the payouts are for today. They pay. Yeah, it's, it's. You'll see it on the app. But you remember that the investment goes throughout all the races and including its Breeding. Right. So this is a long term thing.
Matt Jones
Yeah, Long term relationship.
Ryan Lemond
I got. It's a long term relate. But if we win, I mean, I'm gonna get. You're gonna bet on it, aren't you?
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
Aren't you gonna bet on your horse?
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Shannon The Dude
You got to.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. You've got Mario. I'm gonna. I'm gonna make a bet for you.
Drew Franklin
Okay. All right.
Ryan Lemond
That's is my gift to you. So I didn't appreciate that since they didn't give you a share. All right, so let's go to the derby. It's the next day after we win and we spend all that money of our winnings. What are we betting the next day? Now, yesterday you may have heard, I picked Rodriguez as my horse. It got scratched.
Shannon The Dude
Okay.
Mario
Like an hour after the show.
Ryan Lemond
Like an hour after the show. If you listen to Jay and Lyndon. He asked me my long shot horse and I said grande this morning. It got scratched. So I'm KSR cursed the two horses I really liked. Both scratch. I might have to start over and I haven't really done it yet, but I'll pick one for course of this show. What is your horse?
Mario
Drew, like most people, I'm gonna have to put a bunch of stuff with journalism because it looks to just be the heavy, heavy, heavy, heavy favorite. But I'm watching Final gambit. Couple reasons. One, it's Brad Cox horse. Always have good success betting on Brad Cox horses at Churchill Downs. And it's a gray horse. Gray horse, hadn't won in 20 years. I just. You don't go 21 years without a gray horse winning. So I think the gray streak snaps today or tomorrow with final gambit in there.
Ryan Lemond
Mario, what's yours?
Drew Franklin
I'm going admire Daytona because I'm Florida boy. Gotta stick with Daytona Beach.
Ryan Lemond
It's fit to Japanese horse, though.
Mario
Yes. It's Daytona Japan.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Mario
Oh, it's okay.
Ryan Lemond
No, I mean, they probably mean J. I don't think there's a Daytona, but it is a Japanese horse.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I'm still stick with it.
Ryan Lemond
Japanese horse number one.
Drew Franklin
Okay.
Mario
Still going first time forever.
Ryan Lemond
The first time for everything. All right. Right.
Mario
You don't go 151 derbies without a Japanese horse winning.
Drew Franklin
There you go.
Shannon The Dude
I'm gonna be really boring because I'm doing the exact same thing with Drew. Journalism is like been compared to like American Pharaoh and just by Tom Leach.
Mario
Tom Leach?
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
No way. Tom Leach says it's like American Pharaoh.
Shannon The Dude
Yes.
Ryan Lemond
Wow.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
Okay, well, you can't leave it out then. If. Yeah. All right.
Shannon The Dude
And I was going to pick Juddmont Farm. Drew backed up being the great core, but he's.
Mario
What was that?
Shannon The Dude
English Final Gambit.
Ryan Lemond
What is Judd Mont Farm?
Shannon The Dude
That's where Final Gambit's from. That's where I was going with it.
Ryan Lemond
Okay, gotcha.
Shannon The Dude
And from the X Men Final Gambit. I like Queen's Gambit, the series on Netflix, and it's.
Stockton Mortgage Representative
She's for.
Shannon The Dude
He's from Judd Vaught Farming.
Ryan Lemond
Like, okay. Are you okay?
Shannon The Dude
Drew totally threw me for a loop. I was so ready.
Mario
We can both have the horse.
Shannon The Dude
We're gonna do it.
Ryan Lemond
They don't make everyone pick a different horse. There's not enough space.
Mario
We can share.
Shannon The Dude
We're gonna share this one.
Ryan Lemond
All right.
Matt Jones
Shannon, give me a chunk of gold and Sandman, and then I'll throw in.
Ryan Lemond
The Tick Tockers horse.
Matt Jones
Yeah, well, I just like the name. I mean, again, we don't know anything about horses.
Ryan Lemond
Tomorrow is going to annoy us because he's going to come out and he's going to do, like, what's the big Tick Tock dance right now?
Drew Franklin
Like, a more popular one, I guess. The. The what you call it the needle.
Mario
Is it? Okay.
Ryan Lemond
All right. So he's gonna do the needle.
Drew Franklin
I don't know if it's.
Ryan Lemond
I don't know if that's what it's called. All right. For me, again, I. I felt good about Rodriguez. It's out. So I can't pick that one. Journalism is probably going to be my pick to win, but I, you know, I like to do boxes.
Shannon The Dude
Yes.
Ryan Lemond
I don't have my. My long shot now. That was going to be grande. So I'm at the look for my long shot. I'll tweet it out. I like journalism. Sovereignty and Burnham Square is the three that I like the most. And I'll throw. I'll throw a long shot in. I'll notice that what's his face. Johnny had those oranges horses, too, which makes me a little worried. But.
Shannon The Dude
But what if he nails it, though? What if Johnny nails.
Ryan Lemond
Oh, dude, Johnny's. Johnny's gonna nail it. Zulu Kingdom. I'm putting a heavy bet on it, and if I don't win. Somebody's getting an email.
Shannon The Dude
Which one is Baffert's horse? Because now that he's back, you got to figure it. That's going to be a big storyline.
Ryan Lemond
Is it Citizen Bull?
Shannon The Dude
I'm not sure which one?
Ryan Lemond
I don't know.
Shannon The Dude
You got one left. Right?
Ryan Lemond
But I'm gonna go Sovereignty. Journalism. And Burnham Square, and then I'll throw in a long shot. I don't know what it's going to be. Yeah. Ryan, thank you for driving up here today. I appreciate it.
Shannon The Dude
My pleasure. I'm gonna miss you boys when you're in Scottsdale next week.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. So for people don't know. Next week. So, Drew, Mario, and I fly to Scottsdale, Arizona, Sunday for the Barstool Bet gala, which I still don't even know what that is. We're going.
Mario
We're excited.
Ryan Lemond
I've looked. They haven't even really talked about.
Mario
Dave put out a video last night, but he still didn't say exactly what we're doing.
Ryan Lemond
I don't even know what it is we're going to, but they're putting us up. Up in an insanely nice resort, flying us out there.
Shannon The Dude
You know what the dress code is.
Ryan Lemond
Like, I have a new black tie suit to wear.
Mario
I got mine, too.
Ryan Lemond
So that is. Is Monday night. So Monday it'll be me, Drew, and Shannon, only Ryan won't be here. Then Tuesday, it'll be me, Drew, and Shannon, and then I'm staying out there until Thursday night. And you guys will be back in Lexington on Wednesday and Thursday, so maybe.
Mario
Mario can get us a good guest. If we miss Ryan, he could book us someone else.
Ryan Lemond
I'll be on Wednesday and Thursday, too. I'll just be out there. So are you excited for.
Drew Franklin
Dude, I'm pumped. I'm pumped.
Ryan Lemond
Barstool Bet Gala?
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Yeah, I'm gonna. I got a nice little outfit coming out, so you get to meet people, and then I've never been in Arizona, so I'm excited, man.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Static.
Ryan Lemond
I literally never in my life have I've gone to something that I know less about what it is than the. I don't even know. Like, we're supposed to wear black tie, but I don't even know what we're going to.
Matt Jones
I, like, they just invite you to something. You don't even know what it is, and you're willing to go across the country.
Ryan Lemond
Sort of encouraged us to go. And so I was like, you know what? Free trip to. Free trip to Arizona for it. They're gonna pay for it. And this resort is nice. And then Drew and I are playing TPC Scottsdale.
Mario
Heck, yeah.
Ryan Lemond
On Sunday, we're playing the course the. Where they have the waste management tournament. Drew and I are playing that on Sunday. I am looking forward to that. That's gonna be fun.
Shannon The Dude
Sounds like a fun trip, doesn't Shannon? We probably would have gone yeah.
Ryan Lemond
You all didn't get invited.
Matt Jones
Darn. So I guess this really hurts my feelings.
Mario
It's the same time as the Met gala, so we're going head to head, which is to play on the words, but Dave said we're betting all day, but there's not a lot of sports on Monday. So I don't know what we're betting.
Ryan Lemond
On, but they're bringing out like all the barstool people. Me, Drew, Mario, and then like a bunch of, of, I think people from.
Mario
Tick Tock, Shannon's horse owner.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. So there you go. So we will be there Monday. It'll be early in the morning for us. Monday.
Shannon The Dude
Oh, yeah.
Ryan Lemond
In Scottsdale. But we will be there. Thank you all very much. If we win tonight, if we win with Simply Joking be watching on social media. There's gonna be a party and then eventually there'll be a party at the bar.
Drew Franklin
Get it. Let's get it.
Ryan Lemond
Let's get it. Simply Joking. We'll see you later. It's been Kentucky Sports Radio.
