Welcome to hour two of Kentucky sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Drew Franklin
Welcome back Kentucky Sports Radio here at the KS Bar & Grill wings day dollar wings all day and night. Come on out and have lunch or dinner. This guy right here, he came in, the smile on his face, sit down to eat and gave me the great news. He was like your left rear tires flat and I always thought, well I mean he doesn't know what he's doing. Talk about it. It's not. I mean he's.
Shannon The Dude
He doesn't know tires.
Drew Franklin
Like I'm a tire expert. And then I went outside and my left rear tires flat. I don't know how that happened.
Matt Jones
Well, if you need a segment off to go put the spare on, Drew and I can handle it for a segment.
Shannon The Dude
We'll narrate it.
Drew Franklin
You know, I mean, I'm pretty good at that, but like I may let other people practice on it. You can.
Shannon The Dude
Michelle right there has got a pump right across the street.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I have a couple.
Ryan Lemond
But you got your jack, right?
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I mean I have like 3.
Shannon The Dude
Jacks and 3 jacks unnecessary one.
Matt Jones
The hard part would be in case.
Drew Franklin
I see people on the side of the road. Shannon, I need to help. Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
You going to put your somebody's car up on blocks with three jacks.
Matt Jones
The hard part would be cleaning out the back to get to the spare tire and the jack. All the stuff in the back of your car.
Drew Franklin
So that wasn't really. That wasn't really good.
Matt Jones
Stinks. That stinks.
Drew Franklin
But thank you for telling me that, sir. You, you're. You get $2 wings today throughout the rest of the day. 859-280-2287 Kobe bra. Kobe Braya opened some eyes there at the NBA combine. He shot 57% on all shots, which is like sixth or seventh best of all the players. But more importantly, I saw kind of getting some good buzz, see some mock drafts where he's risen to the top of the second round instead of, instead of at the bottom. Kobe Braya might get drafted. Drew, that's kind of exciting, isn't it?
Shannon The Dude
I think at this point I'd be surprised if he's not drafted. If we're to believe all these mock drafts once the, once the order was set two nights ago, every publication there is put one out yesterday. And I think they all consider him somewhere in the second round. Some in the back of the second round, but some as high as right away in the second. So I'm expecting it when the draft gets here. And he measured really well. A lot of these guys, you see what they have in their college media guys and they get to the combine, it's like four inch difference. I think he was right at six, seven. It was, it was good size.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. One of those two dudes at Rutgers, I get him confused. But one of those, Bailey, Ace Bailey, he, he was listed by Rutgers at 610 and then they measured him. He was six seven and a half, which that'll, that'll hurt you. He's probably now not going to be a top three pick because of his measurements.
Shannon The Dude
Kobe Bray was six, five and three quarters barefoot. I don't know why they do barefoot, but put some shoes on him and that's right around 6, 7.
Drew Franklin
It's weird because you don't play barefoot.
Shannon The Dude
Exactly.
Drew Franklin
So.
Shannon The Dude
But he's getting great reviews from the combine.
Drew Franklin
So that's good though.
Matt Jones
It's awesome because we saw him become a better player as the season went on. He was just a spot up shooter to start with. By the time the season ended, he was creating his own shot. He was getting, you know, making the moves to get open so he could get a shot off. He's earned that right to play in the NBA. He's made himself an NBA player.
Drew Franklin
Do you think he will. Yeah. Do you think he will become any like, will he play in the NBA? I mean his defense, defense was an issue here. So it's hard to imagine how it's not in the NBA. But what do you think?
Shannon The Dude
I think somebody will storm on the bench and use him. I mean, hopefully that defense improved. It got a lot better at the very end of the year. By tournament time he was defending pretty well. But it still has a ways to go to get a lot of minutes. But I do think he'll be wearing a uniform and getting minutes sparingly somewhere just because how he shoots so well.
Drew Franklin
He's a perfect example of how it is so hard for a lot of college fans to project the NBA. Because if you were looking at Kentucky's team last year and you were saying, okay, who are the best players, you probably would have ranked him like fifth or sixth. You know, you would have said Otega, you know, Jackson, Robinson, Lamont Butler, Amari Williams, maybe even Andrew Carr before he got hurt. But the NBA is looking for one specific set of skill sets. And in the and 15 years ago, those skill sets were athleticism and that still matters. But now shooting is a lot more of what that skill set is and he has it more consistently than those other guys.
Matt Jones
There's no doubt about that. It's a shooter's league and that's one thing he can do well. And I've learned over the years, I've been burned a couple times saying that guys will never play in the NBA. Like I remember I said Winon Gabriel will never play in the NBA. Jared Vanderbilt, these guys surprise me. And he can do the thing that NBA coaches want done, that's shoot the Basketball.
Drew Franklin
It happens I think a lot more now in the NBA that they see guys and they are putting you into a slot unless you're a superstar, you know, unless you're Anthony Edwards or whatever. They're saying, okay, I need a big who can do this? I need a wing who can shoot. I need a 3 and D guy. Right. I need a point guard who can do this. And if you can do that, they'd rather have that than say a Jackson Robinson who can do a lot of things well but isn't necessarily a superstar at any.
Shannon The Dude
And three pointing shooting is such a priority now. Like the guys Ryan mentioned. Nothing against the past coach, but you know, some guys just weren't allowed to shoot threes here. And then in one summer before they get the NBA, they prove they have a shot. Like guys like Julius Randall just knocking down threes consistently. I mean he's a big example. He's a superstar. But anyone that can make a three has a shot in the NBA.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. And then Boogie Fland from Arkansas who at one point probably would have been the point guard, would have been the point guard here at Kentucky. He is withdrawing from the draft. He's a perfect example of how nil has changed college sports. This is a dude who certainly would have been in the draft, but he's withdrawing even though he could have still been a first round pick because there's more money for him in college. Most people think he's going to go to Florida and be the point guard there. Surprised? Are you surprised Cal's going to lose a point guard?
Shannon The Dude
He's actually slipped really far. Cal even put out a tweet a few weeks ago about oh, he's a first round pick. I think everyone had him as a second and I saw if a dude doesn't go first round, this will be Cal's first year not having a first rounder since like 2007.
Drew Franklin
Really?
Shannon The Dude
Yeah. So the all the pressures on a dew who's also projected fringe. Kind of more so second round right now. But with with Fland, I really surprised that didn't work out, especially when he got hurt. A lot of us thought he was kind of just getting ready for the NBA.
Matt Jones
I was gonna say, do you think if he hadn't got hurt he would have been a first round pick? Did the injury kind of derail?
Drew Franklin
I don't think he was playing great. I mean I, you know, not to, not to pick on Cal, but I want you to think about the slippage in point guards from Cal. Let's even go back to Memphis through the last few years. Let's just. So let's just relate who the Cal Perry point guards have been in the last few years. Started with Derrick Rose, Tyreek Evans, John Wall, Brandon Knight, Marcus Teague, Andrew Harrison, Tyler Eulis, de' Aaron Fox, Shay Gilges, Alexander. Right, Go through that list. Now let's look at what the post Covid point guards were. Devin Askew, Severe Wheeler, DJ Wagner and now Boogie Flint. That's a massive drop off. And if you want to talk about the drop off in Cal as a coach. Is that the explanation Drew, that you started with these guys who were able to dominate, have pro careers and then you end with guys who are not first round picks and might not even play in the league.
Shannon The Dude
Especially when he's so you know so much of giving them in the dribble drive, you know, go and attack. And then you end up with Devin Heskin who picks up his dribble at half court and Severe Wheeler who couldn't really do it that well. I think years from now when we look back at Cal's career, you will have to talk about pre Covid and post Covid. I don't know what happened, but I've seen a lot of night and day difference in him, the talent he's using. It could also just be with Portal and Lal. It might not just be the COVID year, but it is has been a completely different story around him since that 2019, 2020.
Drew Franklin
And he also went, I mean in that group of post Covid guys there are some dudes who were pretty good that he wouldn't let play point guard.
Matt Jones
So I was going to say case.
Drew Franklin
Of Wallace, Tata Washington, even Davion Mintz, he wouldn't. John L. Davis who played a little point guard at Florida Atlantic and then he didn't let him play it at it.
Shannon The Dude
And Rob should have been the starter. Let's just, let's go ahead and say it. Rob could the one on the list. Okay, do it.
Drew Franklin
So think about, think about what that list is of Devin Askew, Severe Wheeler, D.J. wagner and Boogie Flan and what that list could have been which would have been Davion Mint, Tai Tai Washington, Kason Wallace, Rob Dillingham.
Matt Jones
That's a different field, that's a different list, isn't it? 100%. I gotta be honest though, I really thought DJ was going to be that guy. You know, we talked about him for years until he got here. I thought he was going to be in that same conversation as the great Cal point guard.
Drew Franklin
It just, it Just didn't happen. Yeah, just didn't happen. Who's up next?
Ryan Lemond
Shane Bradley.
Drew Franklin
Bradley, go ahead. Brad.
Caller
Hey, Matt, I just had a quick question for you. For the longest time, you always said that we shouldn't choose coaches just because they have a connection to the university.
Drew Franklin
But now that we have Pope, has.
Caller
That tune changed or did we just.
Drew Franklin
Get lucky with Pope? No, I still feel the same way. I mean, again, let's go back to when Pope was hired. If you look at who the candidates were, I think he was equally as qualified as the candidates that we were down to at the time. So I think my opinion over the years has been, if it's a tie, you could give it to the Kentucky guy. But if it is not a tie, you pick the best coach. I think when you get down to the final two candidates were Shaka Smart and Mark Pope, then to me, it's a tie. And you take Mark Pope. But if the university had allowed them to hire Bruce Pearl or Nate Oates, I think you would have hired Bruce Pearl or Nate Oates. And I think even Mark Pope would have probably understood that. But that's not how it played out. So my position is still the same. I mean, take John Shire at Duke, doing a great job recruiting, should have won a national championship last year. Mike Krzyzewski probably wins a national championship with that group. Last year, Duke hired a dude who had never coached before. Carolina hired Hubert Davis, who had never coached before. I think when you got a job like that, you get the best dude, Drew, you can get, and then that's that.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, and maybe. Go ahead, sir.
Caller
Sorry. So do you think that Pope still would have been one of the top candidates even if he hadn't played at uk?
Drew Franklin
Yeah, maybe. I mean, it depends. Again, once. Once the university made the decision that they were not going to hire Nate Oates, Bruce Pearl, Chris Beard or Sean Miller, which that decision was made. You can argue whether it should have been or not. But that decision was made by the higher ups in the university. Then Mark Pope, to me, was just as qualified as everybody else. I mean, who's the coach at Louisville right now? Pat Kelsey? Did he do a good job? Did you know who he was before he coached, before he got the Louisville job? Probably not. Look at the coach at Michigan, Dusty May. How many people knew who he was? Probably not many. So I think it's a different era of hiring coaches. You can't just go steal the big name. Yes. I think I appreciate the call. If you look at who was available and who Kentucky was allowed to hire. Mark Pope was as qualified as any of them.
Shannon The Dude
I even wrote a list before even got hired. I had him 10th. But, like, all the way through, six or seven were crossed off because some they wouldn't talk to, some had turned them down. I think I had Todd golden ahead of him. Ended up that looking like, pretty good. But once Pope had that one year at BYU before he hired him, that put him on the list because it was their first year in the Big 12. I think they finished fourth before that. He didn't really have the resume, but that one season, I think really took him up to the next tier of coaches.
Drew Franklin
But look at Todd Golden. He came from San Francisco, right. Nate Oats came from Buffalo. I mean, those dudes came from small schools. Mark Popo's at byu. It had some success. He's as qualified as those dudes were before they took their jobs.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I think I've seen dudes.
Drew Franklin
I did say dudes twice.
Shannon The Dude
My bad.
Drew Franklin
Beautiful dudes.
Matt Jones
I think it's a fair question. The guy asked, if you take away Mark Pope's UK basketball career, would he have been considered as a head coach? And I think Drew hit it that the one year that what he was able to do, turning around BYU made them a power. I think kind of opened some eyes in the coaching world.
Shannon The Dude
They lost the tournament game to Duquesne or whatever it was, but that was their first year in the Big 12, and he actually had a great season, all things considered. I think that put him on a lot of lists.
Matt Jones
I do, too.
Drew Franklin
I mean, you're right. To be fair. Would he have been hired if he hadn't gone to Kentucky? Probably not. But would you rather have Shaka Smart? Because that's who it would have been.
Shannon The Dude
I didn't really want him anyway.
Drew Franklin
I think that's who. Let's say Mark Pope didn't exist. Shaka Smart's the coach here. Is that better?
Shannon The Dude
Not for me.
Drew Franklin
No, not really. I mean, Chaka's good, but he failed at Texas.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
So would you have wanted to try it here? You know, I'm not sure. Hey, Wildcat fans. Club Blue is the official NIL fundraising partner of the University of Kentucky, and they're excited to introduce Club Blue. Kids, remember, this is for your kid fans, all right? It's totally free to join. Free? Free. Guess what the kids get?
Matt Jones
Tell me about it.
Drew Franklin
T shirt, a nice membership card, and an official lanyard. Can you imagine your kid running around and going, I'm official. Official kids like things like that. Don't they.
Matt Jones
Yes. They also like boxes and free T shirts and tape. Give a kid an empty cardboard box and some tape, they're happy.
Drew Franklin
And then throw in a lanyard.
Matt Jones
There you go.
Drew Franklin
Clubbluenil.com Big things are on the way. Have your kid join Club Blue Kids. It's where future Wildcats rep the blue with pride@clubblue kids.com. we'll take a break and be right back. Tape. Yes, it's ksr. Welcome back. It is Techie Sports radio.
Matt Jones
For real. Do you want me to go put your spare on. I'll do it for you.
Drew Franklin
No, they're coming to take care of.
Shannon The Dude
Mario can film us. We'll do it. I've had to do it too.
Drew Franklin
You.
Matt Jones
I mean, if you need to go somewhere, I could do it.
Drew Franklin
No, it's fine.
Shannon The Dude
Look at this. Look at this guy.
Drew Franklin
That's very nice. That's. That's why as hard a time as I give you, you're. You're. You're like the nicest.
Matt Jones
Well, we're all band of brothers. We got to reach out and help each other when they need some help.
Ryan Lemond
Some of that catfish for lunch.
Drew Franklin
Brothers. Just not in an actual war. Yeah, I don't. I'm not sure any of us would really be good in an actual war. You think would be if you were. If you were in the trenches in World War I. Of the six of us, who. Who would you want the most combination of all the skills needed.
Shannon The Dude
I'd say none of us are coming home, but I would.
Matt Jones
Shannon has a wrestling championship belt.
Ryan Lemond
That's right.
Drew Franklin
It's not. Yeah, but.
Ryan Lemond
I can shoot.
Matt Jones
And he's from Bullock County. Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Can you. Can you. You can shoot a gun? Yeah, but like, good.
Ryan Lemond
Well, yes.
Drew Franklin
Okay. So Shannon first.
Matt Jones
He's first.
Drew Franklin
I'm certainly last. I. I don't. I can't shoot a gun. I'm a big target. I probably mouth off to the other side. Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
You would get it started.
Drew Franklin
You'd be the reason we all die.
Shannon The Dude
You would walk out into the field and try to talk.
Drew Franklin
First Germans.
Matt Jones
My man. My man.
Drew Franklin
What are you doing? Like, why are we out here?
Shannon The Dude
Picture.
Drew Franklin
It's not. I don't. I like comfort. So I, I would be last. I think that's, you know, it's the way it goes. I have. I need help with everybody listening with something.
Shannon The Dude
You tire.
Drew Franklin
Tomorrow is the start of the new Matt Jones show. It'll air on Thursday nights at 6 o' clock on WHAS. Is it on here in Lexington? Do we know yet? I think it is. Let's just say it is. If it's not, we'll. We'll force them to. It's on six o' clock. It's gonna be every. It's gonna be every week. I'm gonna be talking to somebody new about everything. My first ever Matt Jones Podcast, the guest was Bomani Jones, so I'm bringing him back to be the first guest on this one. But we'll have a ton of people over things. And then we're restarting the podcast as a podcast, too. So you'll be able. I'll tell you when it's up on all the sites and you can get it. But they're very big on making me have a name for it, and I can't call it the Matt Jones Podcast because I already did that. Plus, it's on the radio. But it feels like the Matt Jones show is kind of a lame name. Can you think of a name that would be a good name?
Matt Jones
Jay Williams would just call it the MJ show.
Shannon The Dude
Oh, there you go, MJ.
Drew Franklin
So I'm up for suggestions from the listeners. 772-774-5254. They, you know, one of the people with I heart was like, call it Conversations. And I was like, that sounds like I'm on npr.
Shannon The Dude
You know, drinking, talking real soft.
Drew Franklin
Conversations with Matt Jones. I'm not calling Saxophone entrance.
Matt Jones
Don't get yelled at by Matt Jones.
Drew Franklin
I'm not gonna yell at anybody. You remember, I did this during COVID I would bring people on and talk.
Matt Jones
It was really popular.
Drew Franklin
People really liked it. So that's what we're doing. But if you do you. If you have a suggestion, I'm open to it. Do you have one?
Matt Jones
No, I'm thinking. I'm thinking.
Drew Franklin
All right. Well, do you think about it?
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, we're a little on the spot. We'll come up with something.
Drew Franklin
But, you know, it'll probably start tomorrow. Called the Matt Jones Show. But to changing it to something else as we keep going, I consider calling it Nose Whistle.
Matt Jones
Well, that would be attractive. People are like, what is this talking about? What's. What's the nose whistle?
Drew Franklin
It's attractive. The word you were looking for, right there.
Matt Jones
Attractive for to the listeners.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, attractive. I just think, though, if you just saw it, if you don't, you wouldn't know what it is.
Matt Jones
You know, but you might tune in.
Drew Franklin
Mario designed the graphic yesterday. You have a new one for me to look at? All right, send it to me. Thank you.
Shannon The Dude
The first one didn't pass.
Drew Franklin
Well, the first One he just showed me and it looked like I was angry and I'm trying to project positivity on this show.
Shannon The Dude
So these are attractive conversations you're having.
Drew Franklin
That's right. Who's up next?
Ryan Lemond
Let's go to Francis.
Drew Franklin
Francis, go ahead. Francis.
Caller
Hey, guys, Shout out to Ryan. Fellow Owens, Borean, you know, went to Catholic High in Bress and I went to UK for med school. It's great to talk to you. I think I have a good question for you, Matt. Okay, so I, I saw Mark Pope's latest press conference. He went through all the players. I don't. I think he left out Cam Williams, but I might have missed that. So I, I have a limited. I don't have a frame of reference. I've been a Kentucky basketball fan since I was a kid turning on K with Leopford on top of the TV broadcast. And, you know, he talked a lot about, you know, we hear a lot about Kentucky's unique. It's special. Right. And for me it is because it's the only sports team I've ever followed. I took a wrong turn on the interstate 34 years ago and I've been in New York practicing medicine since then. You have a better perspective being around the sports world. You guys, Shannon and Brian and everything. What. Objectively speaking, like, I'm already believe it's the best, but what do I know Objective. What makes.
Matt Jones
Really.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, that's a great question. I would say if you were to rank programs in college basketball in terms of what is quote unquote, the best program, there's really only a case for four in my opinion. Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke and Kansas. And they each have their strengths. I think North Carolina has like a swagger factor that goes back really to Michael Jordan. Right. The Tar Heel Blue. You know, that, that whole thing that there's just kind of a mystique around that. I think Duke has the brand national they were hated for so long. They have, they've been good for 40 straight years. And really, with the exception of a couple years, good every year. They might have the best national brand. I think Kansas has the best home environment and the best history of just like it feels like history. But Kentucky has the best fans. I mean, Kentucky fans care more than any other fan. And so because of that, the big blue nation, we still have a great history. We still have a great environment. And I think we have probably the second best brand new now, but we have the best fans. And I think when you combine all those, Kentucky comes on top because if Duke's the best brand, we're the second. Right. If, if the best home environment is Kansas and Duke's second, we're probably third. And if the best NBA mystique is Carolina, we're probably second. And you could argue in the last 20 years, we're probably first. So with all of that, I think I would put us at top first overall.
Matt Jones
Yeah. And then to back it up, you have to win, you have to be successful because he's got the most titles.
Drew Franklin
We do have the most titles. Yes, that's exactly. Most wins. Those are obviously very important. Yeah.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So you got the fan base and now you get the success that makes puts him on top.
Drew Franklin
We're the only program that's been good in every decade. We're the only one. And I do think that's important.
Matt Jones
It's important.
Drew Franklin
We'll take a break and be right back. It's Kentucky Sports Radio. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. he'll make him pay.
Ryan Lemond
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Drew Franklin
Good suggestions coming in on the show. Names. Thank you all. Like some really some good ones.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
I like appreciate the conversation. Maybe a little long, but I like.
Matt Jones
It because it connects to our audience.
Drew Franklin
Connects to the audience. Conversation doesn't feel like the perfect word, but I might be able to figure it out.
Shannon The Dude
You can do appreciate our conversation and call it aoc Short tie in your political allegiance to it.
Ryan Lemond
The mad Chat.
Drew Franklin
Matt Chat.
Ryan Lemond
Jones Zone.
Drew Franklin
Jones. Jones Zone.
Matt Jones
Wow.
Drew Franklin
Like no, like Bill O'Reilly. No spin since, since you mentioned the AOC can I tell you two things that, that make me a little mad this week?
Matt Jones
Okay.
Drew Franklin
And I'm it's going to be one on each side so everybody don't get mad. Give me a chance to say both of them. First of all, the more that comes out about the way the people in the White House hid Biden's kind of slip, especially last summer or summer 2024 is pretty bad. It's pretty disgraceful. I don't blame him. He can't help it. Right? But it was clear they knew in the months leading up to the debate that he was slipping and they actively apparently tried to hide it. They would make videos. Slut. They would, when he would walk, they would slow the video down so that it looked like he was walking normal speed. He met, he met George Clooney, who had known for 20 years and didn't know, didn't recognize, didn't recognize George Clooney. Pretty famous person. Somebody had been one of his Biggest donors. If you remember George Clooney, right after that announced that somebody that he should drop out. That's probably why, the reason why I did it.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
You owe that to America to tell people, not just because we want to win the election, because he is the President of the United States. So that is. I don't blame him. He was an old man, but the people around him, that's. You can't do that. You can't be. And apparently they say they didn't do it because they thought he was their only chance to win. You know, that's not a reason to. Right. So that's one thing. Other thing. I don't care what anyone says. You can write me on, on, on the text machine. I ain't changing my mind on this. It is a horrible look for the President, United States to take a free plane from Qatar and then keep it when he's done. That is bribery, plain and simple. Country that has over the years supported terrorism to just basically bribe the president out in the open. You can go, well, the Biden family did this. Well, if, if that's the case, then that's wrong, too. But this is out in the open. And you know, I give credit to some of the Republican commentators who are like, if Joe Biden said, I'm taking a plane and when I'm done, I'm keeping it. Come on. That's a ridiculous. And so you got it on both those things. I don't care who you support. You got to have standards. We have to have a president who, if he has mental deterioration, you don't hide it. And we have to have a system where you can't just pay off the President 400 million dollar plane and say, when you're done, y' all can keep it. Come on. Those two things are ridiculous because people hate each other so much. Now in politics, we are accepting things that we would have never, never, as a country accepted tenure. Neither one of those things would have been considered acceptable 15 years ago. And now all of a sudden, everybody takes up for it. It annoys me.
Matt Jones
You think it'd be a big, huge public outcry on both of those situations.
Drew Franklin
They should. Now, the Biden thing, we didn't really know, but there were people that did. And they didn't say any should have. And they should have. That's just, you know, that's just how it is. You going the game tonight, sir? You going s with the Rose shirt? Well, enjoy. I just thought he was.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I saw his Pete Rose shirt on.
Drew Franklin
All right, so I just need. I just wanted to say those two things.
Shannon The Dude
Was that a teaser for.
Drew Franklin
No, no. That's not what I'm doing on. On that show necessarily. But I just, you know, people got to say stuff. We are accepting things that we would never accept. And then we're defending it because we like. Because we want our side to win. And that's not nonsense. You cannot do that. That's how this country slips, is when you start defending stuff that you know is bad just because it's your side, you can't do that. All right, who's next?
Ryan Lemond
Mark Anthony.
Drew Franklin
Mark Anthony, go ahead.
Caller
Hey, good morning, gentlemen. Hey, Matthew, your show, is it going to be sports centric or is it just.
Drew Franklin
It'll be everything except UK sports. That'll be the only thing I don't talk about. But it'll be sports. It'll be other stuff. So.
Caller
Okay. All right, then. Secondly, a big shout out to Bellarmine Baseball for last night performance.
Drew Franklin
What happened? I don't know. What happened.
Ryan Lemond
Baseball beat Louisville.
Drew Franklin
Oh, they did?
Ryan Lemond
Number 21, Louisville.
Shannon The Dude
Bellarmine beat Web Jim. He robbed him at the end. Ran into the wall for the last out of the. Of the game. It was an awesome catch.
Ryan Lemond
Wow.
Drew Franklin
I didn't know that. Very cool.
Caller
I can't believe this is our two and y' all haven't covered that yet.
Drew Franklin
I didn't know. I'm sorry. That's on me. I didn't know that happened.
Caller
Baseball. And I know we're switching over to basketball right now, but I have to rant just for a second on this Pete Rose thing. Everybody knew Pete was going to be in the hall of Fame because his numbers earned that spot for him. But I think it's pity and small to hold it until the man has died before he gets his flowers. I just think that is. It's just pity and it just rubs me the wrong way. I just don't think that's right.
Drew Franklin
Totally understand. Appreciate the call. Totally understand. All right, we're showing the man on third, Drew. Showing me the play right here. Man on third. If he doesn't catch that. Wow.
Matt Jones
Wow.
Ryan Lemond
Game I've seen in a long time.
Drew Franklin
If he doesn't catch that, it's a tie.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
That was like a over the head basket, Cat. Wow.
Shannon The Dude
Slamming into the wall.
Matt Jones
Slamming into the wall.
Shannon The Dude
First time they beat Louisville and since 91.
Drew Franklin
That's an amazing catch, Shannon.
Matt Jones
Great catch.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. I mean, to end the game that way. It doesn't get any better.
Drew Franklin
That's against the wall and that's your team. You guys got to make you happy, right?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. I mean, we never had the chance to play D1 teams, but I'm very happy.
Drew Franklin
It's so funny that they just beat Louisville. I was driving down Baxter Avenue the other day, and they were playing somebody, and there were, like, 30 people there, and I remember thinking, it's kind of crazy. That's a D1 baseball team or whatever. And then. And then a few days later, they beat. They beat LUL.
Shannon The Dude
It's their first ever top 25 win.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Shannon The Dude
Are you throwing. Ls down last night, Shannon?
Ryan Lemond
Oh, yeah. Yeah. Well, actually, I can't. I'll be honest with you. I didn't find out till this morning, but I was.
Matt Jones
This morning.
Ryan Lemond
Not last night, this morning.
Drew Franklin
That's very, very, very, very cool. Who's up next?
Ryan Lemond
Let's go to John.
Drew Franklin
John. Go ahead, John. Hey, Matt.
Caller
So a couple of days ago, you were talking about how you weren't getting callers and you were saying your phrase because you're cutting people off. But I was having the time of my life because in the first 30 minutes, the first two people didn't realize they were on the air. You had five old men calling about Bill Belichick's girlfriend and a lady asking about Hitler. So, bro, let me just tell you, you can cut us off. It's okay.
Drew Franklin
We need it sometimes. Thank you, though. But it did. It has kind of picked back up after I started letting people do that. So that's. That's okay.
Matt Jones
You're gonna try to make it to Thursday?
Shannon The Dude
Yeah, you said through tomorrow.
Drew Franklin
I got. Yeah, tomorrow, tomorrow. Those that ask anything, Thursday. So I'm a little worried about that. But, you know, we'll see. We've already.
Shannon The Dude
I had the under. You've already. You've already passed that. I didn't think you'd make it as far as.
Drew Franklin
You didn't think I'd be able to.
Shannon The Dude
No, I didn't think you'd get through Monday, to be honest.
Drew Franklin
Oh, okay. Well, you know, we're proud of you. It was hard when the guys were like, my girlfriend's 22 and I'm 81. That was. That was. That was a little. That was a little difficult. But, you know, we still were able to. Able to do it.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I think Drew and I were over there. Cut this guy out. We're wanting you to cut those guys off.
Drew Franklin
Yes. Thank you very much. Appreciate the call. You know, we. The. I learned something that I didn't know was still the case. They. I saw the headline, Libby Dunn is the COVID of the SI swimsuit issue. I didn't even know they still did that. Did you?
Matt Jones
They went through an era where, like, they. The. They were naked. Like, all the athletes were naked, and they were.
Shannon The Dude
That was a body issue.
Drew Franklin
That's a different magazine also. And that was ESPN the Body and. What. Of course, that's your reaction. They went through an era where they were naked?
Matt Jones
Yeah. I thought that was Illustrated athletes.
Drew Franklin
Okay. I'm gonna go to you, Drew. Did you know that still existed?
Shannon The Dude
You know, I've seen, like, they'll do online. I don't. Do you still have a print version? I knew it still existed because they've had a lot of famous people step in that aren't normally models. But, you know, when I was a kid, I used to make sure I had the copy. I don't know if they still put it out like they did.
Drew Franklin
My mom took it from out of.
Matt Jones
The mailbox before you got home.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. So I. I subscribed to Sports Illustrated when I was a kid. Sports Illustrated came on Thursdays. It was my favorite thing.
Matt Jones
It was awesome.
Drew Franklin
I would read it cover to cover. I probably read every Sports Illustrated from 1980. I can still remember the Jack Nicklaus winning the Masters one. So that was, what, 86. So I probably read every Sports Illustrated from probably 86 to 96. Every one of them. But then there'd be a week where it wouldn't come, and I'd go, mom, did the Sports Illustrated come? And she was like.
Matt Jones
Be like, I haven't seen it.
Drew Franklin
You know, my mom doesn't lie.
Shannon The Dude
They're on vacation.
Drew Franklin
My mom doesn't lie. But she'd be like, I didn't have one this week. That's weird. Comes every Thursday, huh? It always seems to not come the same time of year. Then finally, like, when I was a senior in high school, she told me she was throwing those away, and I never got to. I never got to see him.
Shannon The Dude
We could have shared a subscription because I didn't need the other 51.
Ryan Lemond
That's the only reason I look at it as a kid.
Drew Franklin
I didn't even know. I didn't know. Did it.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. Didn't even read the other ones.
Drew Franklin
I was always like. I was always like, what's everybody talking about? I didn't know because I saw that the beginning there would be a letters to the editor where people complained about the week before issue, and I'd always go, what are they talking. These people complaining about?
Matt Jones
That's funny.
Drew Franklin
That wasn't in there. I don't remember that at all.
Ryan Lemond
No bikinis in the one with the week before.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I didn't see one bikini. Stockton Mortgage. Tell me about it.
Matt Jones
Oh, I got some new reads I got to pull up here and I got it ready so as soon as I get to.
Drew Franklin
You got it ready as soon as you pull it up. Yeah.
Matt Jones
Here we go.
Drew Franklin
Boom.
Matt Jones
Alright, let's pick one at random. Love the house, hate the carpet. With a renovation loan from Stockton mortgage you can buy the home and fix it up. Same load. One closing. You know life moves fast. Your mortgage shouldn't slow you down. So Stockton offers fast closings and loan officers who can pick up the phone when you call. Get started@stockton.com NMLS8259/al housing lender NMLS consumeraccess.org There you go.
Drew Franklin
We'll take a break. Be right back. Final segment this Kentucky Sports Radio. My mom's got to be doing her religion class. She would have written me after I.
Matt Jones
Said, I'm surprised she didn't.
Drew Franklin
She's got to be doing a religion class because she would have said like I did it for your own good. Oh, here we go. She did. There it is. Mama tried. Mama tried.
Ryan Lemond
That's a great reply.
Drew Franklin
Mama tried. That's a good two word reply to that.
Matt Jones
Perfect.
Drew Franklin
I just, this, this is just for educational purposes. There's a lot of people write me I'm sure that are like, you know, want to counter and they go, oh, he's not keeping the plane himself. The president, he's donating it. It's going to be his presidential library. First of all, presidential libraries are private. They're not part of the government. And he could still use it for all of his private stuff. Presidential libraries are donated by donors. That's actually why they're a little bit of a boondoggle. I don't like it. Presidents, all the presidents do this when they finish. They take money from everyone for their library because it's private. But it'll be for his library. But he can, it'll be, he'll use it for his personal use. So you should be against that. One person writes, I think he's only doing it to make the left mad. You're probably right. But that's not what the president should do. And then there's a security part. Do we want to let a country that over the years has, has aided and abetted terrorists have the security knowledge of our plane that keeps the president in the air?
Matt Jones
I didn't even thought about that angle. That's a Little scary.
Drew Franklin
I mean, that's going to be the new Air Force One. We are going to have a country who has aided terrorist who gave us the plane for our president. Shannon, that's a little worrisome, isn't it?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, I would think so.
Matt Jones
Probably got little hidden microchips in there.
Drew Franklin
And I'm sure they'll go, well, we'll look at it. But they'll know how it. Like right now, I don't think they know what our air Force want. They'll know now.
Matt Jones
They will.
Drew Franklin
I just. I can't imagine why people think that's a good idea. Thankfully, there are some people on the other side who have said, what are we doing? But I. There need to be more because it's crazy to me.
Shannon The Dude
Crazy also, it sets a bad precedent for whoever's next. Could be the other side. That takes something. That's.
Drew Franklin
That's what. That's another thing I don't understand. Everything you're taking up for now, the other side's gonna do the same thing, right?
Ryan Lemond
Well, he.
Drew Franklin
Are you not worried about that?
Ryan Lemond
That's what they're gonna say. Well, he did it.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, but that cannot be the reason for everything. The other side did it. Then we'll just go into a pit of awfulness anyway. All right, I'm done with that. I have a question for you.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Drew Franklin
Before I go, the phones. You don't have to go to South Africa in September.
Matt Jones
Yes.
Drew Franklin
The little conference I'm in is six days, but I'm going to South. It takes 17 weeks to get to South Africa.
Matt Jones
It's a long trip.
Drew Franklin
It is far away. It is literally the second longest flight you can take in America. Is the one I'm going to take. Atlanta to Cape town is a 15 hour direct flight.
Shannon The Dude
My goodness.
Drew Franklin
It is the second longest flight you can take in the world. There's only one flight longer. New York to Singapore. If I'm gonna go all that way and fly 15 hours each way, I'm gonna stay more than five days. I see on. I was looking online and there's a safari that starts the day after my conference ends. For nine days. You get to go to this wildlife preserve where you get to see rhinos, elephants, giraffes. Giraffes. I'm in on all that.
Matt Jones
You got to do it.
Drew Franklin
But here's the second part of it. It's half safari, half adventure tourism.
Matt Jones
What does that entail?
Drew Franklin
Here's the adventure part. Scaling down a mountain. Like rappelling.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
A zip line over the world's Largest over Africa's largest canyon.
Shannon The Dude
That's it.
Drew Franklin
You just.
Shannon The Dude
You just sit there for that. You got.
Matt Jones
That'd be awesome.
Drew Franklin
And a hike, which I could do the hike, but, you know, Shannon, you and I are. We're both scared of heights.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, I'm sitting that one out.
Drew Franklin
The scaling. Do the zip line. We've done it before. Yeah, you just. You just go. We. We jumped out of a plane.
Shannon The Dude
Just a ride.
Drew Franklin
But the repelling.
Shannon The Dude
We did a small, very small repel in Alaska. Do you remember that?
Matt Jones
I do.
Drew Franklin
And I was terrified.
Shannon The Dude
Okay, that's a bad sign.
Ryan Lemond
So tell me what to set that one out.
Drew Franklin
That's what I wonder. Can I just say, they're not going.
Ryan Lemond
To force you off the side.
Drew Franklin
I'll go look at the line. I'll go look. But I don't know. When you get up there, is there. Is that the only way down?
Ryan Lemond
Don't go up.
Shannon The Dude
A lot of these, they're catered to tourists, so, like, you know, it could take any type of person. I would read the fine print. Like, does it say you need to have a little bit experience or you need to be a certain weight or mobile?
Drew Franklin
It said you were. You. It said as long as you weren't in terrible shape, you could do it.
Shannon The Dude
Okay. Because I think the. They'll babysit you a little bit on this repelling.
Drew Franklin
I mean, I like the idea of, like, there's a nature preserve up in northeast South Africa that is like the second best nature preserve to see wild animals in the. In the world, and you get to stay in it. And they say elephants, like, walk up to your house. That feels like. That would be awesome. So part of me is like, if I'm gonna go all the way over there, I'd like to do it. It's good. The UK Bye week is during this week, so I wouldn't miss a game.
Matt Jones
You got to do it. I mean, you may never have this chance again. And I think all the positive and the fun things about this far outweigh the one reservation you have about the doing repelling down the mountain.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. So you say, do it.
Matt Jones
Do it.
Drew Franklin
Shannon, would you do it? Have to rappel down the mountain?
Ryan Lemond
God, I don't know, man. I guess I would if push came to shove, but I wouldn't want to do it.
Shannon The Dude
Hopefully it doesn't come to pushing and shoving. You're able to do it on your own.
Drew Franklin
Hopefully they don't have to actually push you, push you off the mountain. But seeing an elephant, it'd be good.
Matt Jones
You Got to do all that.
Ryan Lemond
We got those at the zoo in Louisville.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, but like, out in the wild and it's a nature preserve and it.
Matt Jones
Just feels like once in a lifetime opportunity.
Drew Franklin
I mean, the reality is I'll. I'll probably never go back to South Africa after this trip, so. I feel like you have to do it, Ryan, don't you?
Matt Jones
Yeah. You know, they've got some places around town where you can kind of practice your rappelling. It won't be near as tall, but you can practice a little bit.
Shannon The Dude
We could take you out to the gorge.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, not a bad idea. All right, who's up next? Shannon.
Shannon The Dude
Mark.
Drew Franklin
Mark. Go ahead, Mark.
Caller
First time, long time for the name of your show. There's a song that was written 60 years ago. It's called Along Came Jones by the Coasters. It would be perfect for your show.
Matt Jones
Long came came along came Jones.
Drew Franklin
It's a humorous song. It is. It feels like that. People could read that the wrong way, though.
Shannon The Dude
Sing it again. Right.
Matt Jones
Came John Tall talking Joan.
Ryan Lemond
Gotta give you a theme song.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
That actually wouldn't be the worst theme song in the world.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
All right. Well, thank you, sir. The Coaster.
Caller
The Coasters version. The Coasters version.
Drew Franklin
There's.
Caller
There's a. Ray Stevens did it around 1970. The Coasters did it around 1960.
Drew Franklin
All right, well, I appreciate it. Appreciate the call. Let's pick tonight Pete Rose night. White Sox and Reds. Reds are on a five game losing streak, but they're minus 240 to win tonight. Do the Reds get it done in honor of Pete Rose? DraftKings, by the way, go to DraftKings. Bet 5, get $300 if you win your bet at DraftKings. Promo code KSR. DraftKings. The Crown is yours.
Shannon The Dude
Who you got in honor of Pete Rose? You have to bet on the Reds. I will bet on Cincinnati tonight.
Drew Franklin
You specifically have to bet on.
Shannon The Dude
Of all nights to bet on the Reds.
Drew Franklin
This is the one you're ever gonna bet. This is the night to bet on the. Fair enough. You got them.
Matt Jones
Oh, you. They're not red. They're not going to lose on Pete Rose Night. Of course they're going to win.
Ryan Lemond
The Sox going to throw the game, though.
Drew Franklin
Oh, that's a good.
Matt Jones
This is.
Drew Franklin
This is the biggest bet on the Reds. The white socks. Throw the game. Come on. This is. Do you think they put it against the White Sox for that very reason?
Shannon The Dude
I'm definitely betting.
Drew Franklin
Play the White Sox at home once every two years. They were like, this is perfect. The gambling game of the century. Thank you all very much. Tomorrow we are in studio. This has been Kentucky Sports Radio.
Podcast Summary: Kentucky Sports Radio – Hour 2 (May 14, 2025)
Presented by iHeartPodcasts and Sports Talk 790 (WKRD-AM)
In the second hour of the May 14, 2025 episode of Kentucky Sports Radio (KSR), hosts Matt Jones, Ryan Lemond, Drew Franklin, and Shannon "The Dude" engage in an in-depth discussion about the latest developments in University of Kentucky (UK) sports, particularly focusing on basketball. The conversation weaves through player prospects, coaching decisions, listener interactions, and light-hearted banter, providing listeners with comprehensive insights into the state of UK athletics.
The episode opens with an enthusiastic discussion about Kobe Braya, a standout player from UK’s basketball team, following his impressive performance at the NBA Combine.
Drew Franklin highlights Braya's shooting prowess:
“Kobe Braya opened some eyes there at the NBA combine. He shot 57% on all shots, which is like sixth or seventh best of all the players.” (03:17)
Shannon "The Dude" concurs, adding context to Braya’s physical attributes:
“Kobe Bray was six, five and three quarters barefoot. I don't know why they do barefoot, but put some shoes on him and that's right around 6, 7.” (04:31)
Matt Jones praises Braya’s development:
“He's a shooter's league and that's one thing he can do well. He's made himself an NBA player.” (04:43)
The hosts analyze Braya's potential trajectory in the NBA, debating whether his defensive skills will secure him a spot in the league. While recognizing his shooting talent as a significant asset, they express cautious optimism about his overall NBA prospects.
Transitioning from player prospects, the discussion shifts to the challenges faced by Cal’s basketball program, particularly focusing on the decline in their point guard draft picks.
Drew Franklin critiques the current state of Cal’s point guards:
“There's a massive drop off. And if you want to talk about the drop off in Cal as a coach.” (08:23)
Shannon "The Dude" adds insights on the coaching strategies affecting player performance:
“They end up with Devin Askew, Severe Wheeler, D.J. Wagner and Boogie Flan and what that list could have been...” (10:21)
Matt Jones emphasizes the impact of coaching decisions on player development:
“I thought DJ was going to be that guy. You know, we talked about him for years until he got here.” (11:09)
The hosts delve into how coaching decisions and system changes post-COVID have adversely affected the performance and draft prospects of Cal’s point guards. They compare past successes with recent struggles, highlighting a need for strategic adjustments to reclaim their former glory.
A significant portion of the discussion centers around the hiring of Mark Pope as UK’s new basketball coach, sparked by a listener call.
Caller Shane Bradley (11:26) questions the criteria for selecting coaching staff:
“If it's a tie, you could give it to the Kentucky guy. But if it is not a tie, you pick the best coach.” (13:04)
Drew Franklin defends the hiring decision, emphasizing Pope’s qualifications:
“Mark Pope was just as qualified as everybody else.” (13:13)
Shannon "The Dude" shares his initial reservations and acknowledges Pope’s contributions:
“Once Pope had that one year at BYU before he hired him, that put him on the list because it was their first year in the Big 12.” (14:10)
The conversation explores the complexities of coaching hires, balancing local connections with merit-based selections. The hosts conclude that Mark Pope’s performance at BYU and his subsequent impact at UK justify his appointment, despite initial skepticism.
Throughout the episode, the hosts engage with multiple listener calls, addressing questions and sharing personal anecdotes.
Caller Francis (21:08) praises UK’s basketball program, leading to a debate on what makes it the best:
Caller Mark Anthony (29:12) discusses hosting a sports-centric show and commends the program’s focus:

The listener interactions provide a dynamic element to the show, allowing hosts to connect with their audience while addressing hot topics and sharing light-hearted moments.
The hosts celebrate recent achievements by UK-affiliated teams, including Bellarmine Baseball’s victory over Louisville.
Ryan Lemond shares excitement:
“Baseball beat Louisville. Number 21, Louisville.” (29:30)
Shannon "The Dude" elaborates on the game’s pivotal moment:
“Bellarmine beat Web Jim. He robbed him at the end. Ran into the wall for the last out of the game.” (29:35)
The segment underscores the significance of these victories, reflecting the competitive spirit and prowess of UK-associated teams across different sports.
A notable part of the episode is dedicated to announcing Matt Jones’ upcoming show.
Drew Franklin introduces the topic:
“Tomorrow is the start of the new Matt Jones show. It'll air on Thursday nights at 6 o'clock on WHAS.” (16:32)
Matt Jones discusses the transition and seeks listener input for the show’s name:
“If you have a suggestion, I'm open to it. Do you have one?” (20:17)
Shannon "The Dude" and Ryan Lemond offer creative suggestions, reflecting the collaborative atmosphere:
“Matt Chat, Jones Zone...” (25:08)
The announcement highlights the evolution of the program, signaling an expansion of content and engagement with the audience through the new show, tentatively titled "Matt Chat" or "Jones Zone."
Interspersed throughout the episode are moments of camaraderie and humor among the hosts:

Drew Franklin shares his enthusiasm for an upcoming South Africa trip, detailing plans for safari and adventure activities, while expressing apprehensions about rappelling down mountains.
“There's elephants, like, walk up to your house. That feels like. That would be awesome.” (38:21)
These interactions add a relatable and entertaining layer to the show, enhancing listener engagement through shared experiences and laughter.
In a departure from strictly sports topics, the hosts briefly delve into political issues, expressing concerns about President Biden.
Drew Franklin criticizes the administration’s handling of President Biden’s public image and ethical decisions:
“You can't hide mental deterioration. And we have to have a system where you can't just pay off the President... Come on.” (25:20)
Shannon "The Dude" and Matt Jones engage in the discussion, highlighting the importance of accountability and standards in leadership.
“You cannot do that. That's how this country slips.” (29:46)
While not the central theme, this segment reflects the hosts' willingness to address pressing national issues, offering listeners a broader perspective beyond sports.
As the episode winds down, the hosts wrap up with promotions and final thoughts:
Drew Franklin encourages listeners to bet on the Reds during Pete Rose Night, tying it back to sports betting promotions:

Shannon "The Dude" and Matt Jones engage in playful banter about betting strategies, maintaining the show’s lively and engaging tone.
