Matt Jones
Nmlsconsumeraccess.Org welcome to hour two of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Billy
Okay, I do recognize for those of you saying that I've like went full doof and schmurtz there in the second half of the first hour. You're right. My voice kind of did the, you know, I, I get it, but I'm a little outraged by a couple things.
Shannon
I'm justified.
Billy
All right, but we got Billy here. He's outraged at something Shannon said. We got callers. I'm still going to do the end of my analogy I use. But before all that, I have some breaking news. Ronnie, Nana, this is why I love live radio. This is why I think it's the best medium because you never know what's going to happen. We had a caller in the last segment say he went by Dunkin Donuts and threw the Ls down in Frankfurt to Vince Merrill.
Shannon
Yes.
Billy
And we didn't know whether we believed him or not. Did you believe him, Shannon?
Matt Jones
No. No.
Billy
Did you believe him?
Shannon
Right? I did kind of believe him.
Billy
I kind of believed him. During the break, for the first time since yesterday, my phone rang, and it was Vince Merrill. And Vince Merrill called to tell me that the guy flipped him off at the Dunking Donuts.
Shannon
Not els down.
Billy
That he didn't throw ells down, he.
Matt Jones
Threw something up instead.
Billy
He flipped him off. And I said to him, I'm about to go back on the air. I'm not asking you about any of the rest of this right now.
Shannon
You did. You said that.
Billy
But I did think that. And I said, do you care if I share that? And he said, yes. So not only is Vince listening, Shannon, he wants to crack. Not. Ls down, middle finger up. Yeah. Wow.
Matt Jones
There's a big difference in that. You knew. Ls down. That's fine.
Billy
But I want you to think about this. Figure this is my Vince, because I know you're listening. This is why you screwed up, right? You had a relationship with this fan base where literally you would call into the show, like call in during a break and say, yeah, that guy's story. He actually flipped me off. It's not gonna be like that at Louisville. No, there's nothing they have there that's like this. There's nothing. And, you know, I don't know what to tell you, but, wow. So there you go. That's why live radio is right there.
Shannon
My guess is that's not gonna be the only time the Vince runs into a situation like that.
Billy
All right, so that's number one. Number two, Shannon, you said that Billy said he was going to cheer for Louisville when Kentucky didn't play. Billy, you would like to chime in?
Shannon
Yeah.
Billy
I didn't catch the whole first hour.
Ryan Seacrest
I did catch Shannon warping my words again, though.
Matt Jones
What did you say then, sir?
Ryan Seacrest
I wish Vince Merrow the best of L luck. I did not say I was going.
Billy
To be rooting for the Cardinals. To be fair, Shannon, the best of luck you could have would be to win, right?
Matt Jones
Exactly. That's what I'm saying.
Ryan Seacrest
Acting like I'm putting a Cardinal hat.
Billy
On and rooting for the car. I thought you were going L1C4, Shannon. Give me a break.
Matt Jones
They all's up. As you said that. I mean.
Billy
No, listen, this guy gave 12 years.
Shannon
12 years.
Billy
It. Can you hope he wins or loses? I hope he has success, yes, but I'm not.
Ryan Seacrest
I wish him the best of luck. Professionally and personally, I do wish him the best.
Billy
So Shannon was right. You came in there to Correct him and he was right.
Ryan Seacrest
I'm not rooting for the cards. I do hope he finds success in his professional career.
Billy
Louisville plays teams that are not. Kentucky are. And Vince Mero is on the sideline. Are you rooting for him to win?
Matt Jones
I wish him the best of luck.
Billy
What does that mean?
Ryan Seacrest
No matter what along his career, I hope he finds success. Yes.
Billy
So at Louisville, to find success, he's going to have to win. Do you want him to win?
Ryan Seacrest
No, I don't want him success.
Billy
If he's not winning, it might be.
Ryan Seacrest
Personally, who knows the relationships.
Billy
He said personally and professionally, Yes, I.
Ryan Seacrest
Hope he finds success. No, I do not root for the Cardinals to win.
Billy
Specifically, I don't understand what success can he have if they don't win? Like, you mean just success in like.
Ryan Seacrest
Well, he could be a good recruiter. He could bring in some guys that make and they all lose. But no, listen.
Billy
Wow.
Shannon
I got a number to a tattoo shop. Just go get that big L tattoo in your back when you leave here.
Matt Jones
Dude, you should have just let us. You know what?
Billy
This is the equivalent of Vince's interview in December for you. You made it worse.
Matt Jones
Yeah, you've been better off coming.
Billy
You've been better off not coming in. Turn his mic off. 859-280287.
Shannon
Wow.
Billy
Wow. That was a heck of a start to a segment.
Matt Jones
What I said was, I looks like.
Billy
Shannon, I was about to give you a hard time. It looks like you were right. It looks like you were correct.
Matt Jones
Personally, I love Vince, but professionally, I can't root for him now. That's it. That's it.
Billy
I'm with you. Unbelievable.
Shannon
Vince has to understand that as our fan base. He has to understand why we feel this way.
Billy
He thinks everyone is Billy. But be clear. Only Billy is Billy. Billy and. And Jerry. Jerry who? I'm very disappointed in you, Jerry. You've called here, you've called this show almost as much as anyone. I'm disappointed in you. All right, I'm going to do my analogy on leadership because I do think that Game of Thrones thing is important, but let's go through a few of these. Doing good. 30 seconds. Go to car.
Caller
Be easier, I think. Yeah. If that's all right. Because that just, you know.
Billy
20 seconds. Doing good.
Matt Jones
Talking to us.
Billy
No.
Shannon
Have a good conversation with someone. Gentlemen.
Caller
I'm doing good. How are you?
Billy
15. Sorry about that.
Caller
Work was going on. 15 seconds is all I need is this big fan of events, but not if you go to an inferior institution. Ls down, little dog. Ls down.
Billy
There we go.
Matt Jones
That's a good recovery.
Billy
Good recovery.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Billy
Good recovery. Larry from Paducah. 30 seconds.
Caller
Has Stoops ever explained how he lost that team last year?
Billy
He said that they had some culture issues, but he's not gone into any detail. Correct.
Caller
So the answer is no?
Billy
The answer is no.
Caller
Thanks.
Shannon
Make good use of these 30 seconds.
Billy
I'm telling you, these guys kind of using their 30 seconds correctly. 8, 5, 9, 2, 8, 02, 2. 87. Bill, come for it.
Caller
All right, Vince, I'm glad you're listening, because when you throw the L's up, I hope to God your hand cramps. I hope they don't have those little bags of Fritos in Louisville. All right. I hope that. You know, when you go do the karaoke of simple man and acc, all six of their fans at the ACC tournament, all six of their fans are gonna love it. Okay? But at the end of the day, you are not a big dog anymore. You are no more than a toy poodle. And I hope you stub your toe when you have your press conference. But I do love you, buddy. Until then.
Billy
You know what, though? Like, that's the. Like, that's.
Shannon
That's. That's what the fan base feels right now.
Billy
Still love you, buddy. Hope I can't articulate that bad. Yeah. There's not gonna be Shannon a moment where he sings that Louisville doesn't have an Alice blue gown.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean, we.
Shannon
Right.
Matt Jones
The good thing is, as our bass player pointed out, we don't have to sing simple man anymore.
Billy
Sheriff.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Billy
You're gonna have to do science projects with. He's the nerdiest person we have. Shannon the D. What are you in the Sheriff gonna do? Going. Going. Like. I mean, come on. This is what you signed up for, right?
Matt Jones
He's a little dog now.
Shannon
Dirty dog.
Billy
Maybe he'll show up in a Jack Harlow video. I guess that's the best he. That's the best he could hope for is he could dance with Jack Harlow next to my car in the back in my backyard. That's it.
Shannon
Go hang out with Terry. Miners. In the end, Tony.
Billy
Gotta be careful. I like Terry and Tony and Nick and. And, you know. But JB. JB. Go. 30 seconds.
Caller
Hey, Matt. Long time. First time. Who I think this probably. That is lowlife patrol. Move as a coach could do. As far as motivation. Do you think maybe he sees some writing on the wall at the end of the season for Stoops and it's. It's Easier to find a job when you got a job. And maybe send big bird Billy to Louisville with.
Billy
You know, all of those things are true. There's no doubt. There's got to be part of this that's riding on the wall. You're probably right. It is probably easier to find. Find a job when you've got a job. But he'd have gotten a job no matter what. I mean, I think as soon if Mark would had been let go at the end of the year, Vince would have had a host of opportunities. Not just Louisville. He would add a host opportunities. He clearly wanted to do it right now. And that's the part I don't understand.
Shannon
And the fact that, you know, he just got married. He bought a new house here. His wife's kids are around here. You know, there's a kind of got the roots were digging in deep here, picking them up and moving. Not just anywhere down the road to the rival. That's what's hard to accept.
Billy
He's probably gonna make that drive on I 64. You know, when he stopped at the Frankfurt Dunkin Donuts, that might have been the drive to go to Louisville.
Shannon
I'm sure it was.
Billy
I didn't even think about that Meeting.
Shannon
With people right now, probably.
Billy
You think so, Shannon?
Matt Jones
Probably so, yeah. I mean, why else would he be there?
Shannon
I mean, there are Dunkin Donuts in Lexington. Could have stopped. You just needed a donut and a coffee.
Billy
Is there a Dunkin next to the interstate that you would pull right off?
Shannon
Oh, sure.
Billy
Which one?
Shannon
The one in Frankfurt.
Billy
Yeah, yeah, it's right off the interstate. Yes. You think he just pulled off? Yep. On the way to Louisville?
Shannon
Yep.
Billy
Got a donut.
Shannon
Had a donut.
Billy
Got flipped off, got back in his.
Shannon
Car, turned KSR back on to hear what we're saying about him to go along with.
Matt Jones
With it.
Shannon
He tells that famous story. The fan stopped him in a supermarket in Lexington when he was thinking about the Michigan job.
Billy
Yes. That was a big deal to him.
Shannon
Big deal. The fan kind of, he says, changed his mind about that job a little bit.
Billy
Yeah.
Shannon
Now the fan throwing the middle finger up in the air at him. What's he think about that?
Billy
Unbelievable. Jesse, 30 seconds.
Caller
Hey, Matt, thanks for taking my call. Glad to hear the Vince's listening because I think there's kind of two ways.
Ryan Seacrest
To look at the story here.
Caller
And I. I just want to say thanks to Vince for everything he did for the program. The way that the program turned around was what led me to buying season tickets a few years ago. But I've also let those tickets go after this year kind of for the same reason. I'm. I'm disappointed in what's happening, where he was at.
Ryan Seacrest
I'm disappointed where he's going, but I.
Caller
Can'T do anything about him going to Louisville.
Billy
So just, you know, I understand that. Yeah. You definitely do have to say, like, he, He. He was awesome here and like, he. No doubt, maybe the best recruiter Kentucky football's ever had.
Shannon
Yep.
Billy
You still went to Louis.
Shannon
You know, like we said earlier in.
Billy
The first, I loved John Cena, but when he turns on Cody. Rhodes turns on Cody.
Matt Jones
That's right.
Billy
Right. Like, you still.
Matt Jones
Still a heel turn. You can't just ignore it.
Billy
You can't just act like it didn't happen.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Billy
You know.
Shannon
You know, I think was our first caller brought up the name John Sumrall. It's something like we're going to hear a lot between.
Billy
Yeah, I get all that. But like, Mark Stoops is the coach this year, so I am. You're going to hear me say we got to hope it works.
Shannon
Absolutely.
Billy
It doesn't do us any good to hope it doesn't work.
Shannon
Correct.
Billy
What does that do? That's just cutting off your nose spot your face.
Shannon
We want it to work.
Billy
We want it to work. You know, so John Sumrall, like, is that a discussion to have if. If things don't work? Yeah, that's a discussion. But right now, like, if he ain't gonna be the coach tomorrow, we got. We got to try to win with what we got. Right?
Shannon
Very true.
Billy
Adam. Go ahead, Adam. 30 seconds.
Caller
Hey, Matt. First time, long time.
Billy
Who are.
Caller
Hey, I just wanted to say as a fan, very appreciative of everything Vince did for the program. Personally, my son has aspirations of playing college football. Vince at camps. Vince has taken the time to go talk to him several times. But that said, he went to Louisville. I hope we get the chance to run it down his throat. Run over that sideline. I don't care if we get a penalty. Throw the L down in his.
Shannon
You have to drop that.
Billy
Drop that.
Matt Jones
No, no. He did it on his own.
Shannon
Okay.
Billy
I will say if we win again. I don't. I don't expect we will. If we go down there and win at Louisville, I'll be on the field looking for.
Shannon
Looking for him.
Billy
I'll. I will. I'll take the penalty. Might need to take some bodyguards, but I'll be throwing the else down.
Shannon
If they're able to win at Louisville.
Billy
This year, can you Imagine. All right, so because this is going to be gloom and doom for a while, can you imagine what the celebration would be like? Big for everyone involved if they beat.
Shannon
Louisville with Vince standing on the sideline over there? Because they're probably going to have a good season. We're probably not.
Billy
Now, what's the more likely scenario is then Louisville beats us and we have to watch Vince throwing Ls up. Oh, I can tell you this. To whatever extent those first couple of calls were province when that comes out, like, what's. What are we going to do in the press conference here in two days when he does this? That's happening.
Shannon
It's definitely going to happen. They introduce him and he throwing Ls up.
Billy
I mean, he has to.
Shannon
He's got to show. He's all in. He's got to show the Louisville fan base he's all in on.
Billy
He has to. I mean, that's what he has to do. Unbelievable. Jesse, 30 seconds.
Caller
Matt, this is Jesse from Dunkin Donuts. I just want to say I drove past him and gave the dirty bird up in the air. And then he pulled up next to me and then I gave him the L's down as he was.
Billy
So you gave him the dirty bird first. Interesting. You skipped that part when you told the story.
Caller
Yeah, I know, I know. I know. I did. I. I feel a little bad, but not too bad.
Billy
Really.
Caller
See y' all go, cat.
Billy
Appreciate the call.
Shannon
Well, now we know the full story.
Billy
We know that it did, Shannon. There's no question it happened.
Matt Jones
Yep. Got the dirty bird. Confirmation from both sides.
Billy
That had confirmation from both sides. Both sides are reporting. I see Mario. That's something you can believe. Not Alex Caruso on Facebook. Stop overpaying for sunglasses. Billy
Nice. Good song. 859280, 2287 Text Machine. Text Machine's great today, not gonna lie to you. 772-7745-2544 One person writes. Breaking news. Matt Jones just announced he's running for governor. Source Mario's Facebook page.
Shannon
The way Mario said it's so convincingly.
Billy
I thought I just missed the story. He was so convinced. What person writes, vince Merrow was a great coach here. He's now no longer the coach here. I look at it as if Andy Beshear became governor of Russia. I don't have to wish him well as governor of Russia.
Shannon
Fair.
Billy
I mean, wrong.
Matt Jones
That's extreme comparison. But yeah.
Billy
It is a little bit of an extreme comparison, right? One person writes, matt, do you think Vince gets the bird all the time now thanks to Jesse? No, but probably gets it at least one more time. @ some point I won't be surprised.
Shannon
If he gets it quite a bit. You know, the L just drop a couple fingers. It can be a good handle movement for us. Ls down. Dirty bird.
Billy
It's amazing. He does all right for. Let me tell you just one last thing. When I was talking about the leadership thing, about the different. The two different leadership styles sort of top down. So let me. I used presidents. Let me also use coaches. Caliperi was a top down leader.
Shannon
Yes.
Billy
That at his best would listen to his assistance and then make a decision. And then they all had the marching orders.
Shannon
Right.
Billy
At his worst, he stopped listening to them. But at his best that was what he did. Right. But it was Cal's way. Tubby was more let me kind of hear everybody's opinions. And depending on who he was with, he could be swayed. Right? True. Luckily he had a group of people he trusted, but it was more of a group think mentality. Would you agree with that?
Shannon
Very much so, yes.
Billy
Here's the negative about that. If a person who operates like that is not firm in their convictions, then they can get floated around depending on the day. If you read some of the books about Biden and Trump, they. That's when they're at their worst. Whoever they happen to be around that day, that's what they do. So there are pros and cons to each one. Mark Stoops has always been a let's kind of group think mentality. Whereas Cal was top down, he was group think. When Stoops is at his best, he would hear all these people, they would work together and they would come to a solution.
Shannon
And it seemed to have worked.
Billy
And it worked. What I think has happened in recent years is as has Mark has kind of, I don't want to say detached, but has not been as strong in his success. It has become a Game of Thrones thing there. Who can be closest to the king? Right. And I think Vince kind of got pushed to the side by some of those people. Now whose fault is that? I'm not there enough to know, to be honest with you. Is it. Were things better or worse? I mean, the results on the field have been worse. But I do think that that has been an issue. I think that's led to some people departing. It's also led to some dysfunction. And so two different leadership styles, both can be successful. At the end of the Cal era, we saw what the negative part of top down looks like.
Shannon
Right.
Billy
And I wonder if now in the Stoops there we're seeing the negative part of the kind of group think era. Does that make sense.
Shannon
I think it's a great analogy that you put out there. So, you know, this. This spring we heard that the, the, the. The culture and everything was better in the UK football program. So do you think that maybe Stoopzz is trying to go back to that? What made him successful? Get back to that.
Billy
I think he. I think he just has a different group of people he's following right now.
Shannon
Okay.
Billy
Now will it be better?
Shannon
Feels like he's not one of them.
Billy
Vince probably feels like he's left out. That's just my sense. I don't know that for sure, but that's just my sense.
Shannon
Yeah.
Billy
Still, you can't go to Louisville.
Shannon
No.
Billy
John. 30 seconds. Go.
Caller
He is now the enemy. I don't wear red shirts. I won't even wear red underwear.
Shannon
And just let me know where I.
Caller
Can send my resume for the general manager at ksr.
Billy
Appreciate the call. You know, yeah, red. I wear red some because of the reds, but I'm not a huge fan. But I'm not going to wear a Louisville shirt except in like a skit.
Shannon
Yeah. We just saw Mark Pope wouldn't even let one of his kids wear red socks in his camp the other day.
Billy
It's exactly right.
Shannon
So when Vince marches out on the news conference introducing him as a coach, he's got a Louisville shirt on, Louisville hat on.
Billy
Boo.
Shannon
Booing him big time. I like you.
Billy
See, I don't even know how you could like. I know. It's just like I said, though, on the. On the Twitter space last night. We do need to remember, though. For me, for Ryan, for Shannon, for Drew, for Mario. I used to think for Billy, but I'll now take him out of that. For those five of us, we will always care more than the people who are employees of the university do.
Ryan Seacrest
Yes.
Billy
Yeah, we will.
Matt Jones
For them, it's just a job. It's a business.
Billy
It's a job. Now, there are some exceptions. It wasn't just a job for Jo B.
Caller
Hall.
Billy
I don't think it's just a job for Mark Pope, but that. But for, you know. But there are other people for whom it is just a job.
Matt Jones
I feel like if you didn't grow up here, you know, or play here, then it's different. Yeah.
Billy
Okay, so let's imagine I got. I. KSR ended and I took a job at Illinois Sports Radio. I'm gonna be all in. Let's go, Ilana. Right. I'm gonna sit there and think of all the Illinois greats. Like.
Shannon
Okay, Dan, Paula, Lumbo. What his name was Dan Palombo.
Billy
Making that name up. I'm trying to. Who played basketball in Illinois? Whoever. I'll create someone. But I'll tell you this, I'm gonna love it. But you know, then if, if Ohio State offers me more money, I might now all of a sudden be an Ohio State guy. In Illinois. It was fun. I loved it.
Shannon
Let's go Buckeyes.
Billy
But when it's Kentucky, I can't do that with Louisville and Tennessee. Like I could do it with Colorado, in Colorado State because I don't really have a connection with either one of them. But I can't do it with Kentucky and Louisville. We always have to remember that these people are what I would be to Colorado and Colorado State. It's a job, not their essence.
Shannon
Yeah.
Billy
Which is what it is for us. So that's why we should always kind of not be shocked that they do this.
Shannon
If they do it, coaches, especially assistant coaches in football, they bounce around. Usually every year staffs change after every season. But like I said earlier, it usually happens in January, February before spring football.
Billy
Darren Williams.
Shannon
Darren Williams is a good one. Yeah.
Billy
Anybody else?
Shannon
Dan Palumbo.
Billy
That's not a name.
Shannon
Palumbio.
Billy
You think of Joey Palumbo.
Shannon
He was a five star sayer.
Billy
He's gonna be sad too. Lost his. Jeff Ruby's friend.
Shannon
Yeah.
T Mobile Representative
TJ Smith, personal injury attorney.
Billy
Call tj. He'll make him pay.
Matt Jones
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Billy
All right, I am going to tell the Michigan story and I got it. And I'm going to go to the phone calls for here, just right now. But let me just say I'm sorry. Murray State, like it was awesome. He made the world. It was awesome.
Shannon
They had to win the game twice.
Matt Jones
Yeah. It was crazy.
Billy
And I guess we'll have to talk about it tomorrow because I do want to talk about it, but we just can't right now.
Shannon
Yeah.
Billy
Even though it was awesome.
Shannon
It was awesome.
Billy
I will try to get Skrna Skirka on later in the week. It was awesome. And I was as happy as I've been for a non Kentucky baseball team ever.
Shannon
Same.
Billy
But sorry, this is. This is what it is. You what? Okay. So did that dude play at Illinois? He didn't play at Illinois.
Shannon
Dan Palumbizio.
Billy
That's not a person.
Shannon
It is a person. He was Indiana, Mr. Basketball, but he didn't play Illinois.
Billy
Where'd he play?
Shannon
Ball State.
Matt Jones
Close.
Billy
That's very different, Shannon. Ball State in Illinois.
Shannon
Yeah. I thought he went To Illinois.
Billy
And you thought he went to Illinois, but he went to Ball State.
Shannon
Went to Ball State.
Billy
Okay. It's not the same. All right, so we still. I'll still say just Darren was Williams. He's Nick Anderson apparently went there too.
Shannon
Yeah.
Billy
All right, let's go through here. Fake Barney, 30 seconds.
Caller
Vince is now my second favorite Vince. Or even lower beyond behind Vince Gill.
Shannon
Matt, I'm joining all the women 15.
Caller
Years older than us to say go rest high in Dixie Highway Vape shop. Little dog, your time at Camelot is done. Traded Jeff Rubies for trash bag juice at tailgate. Crappy science museums in hepatitis days have come. Wow.
Shannon
Wow.
Billy
Fake Barney comes from the alt.
Matt Jones
Wow.
Billy
Been a while since we've heard. Had a song for Vince.
Matt Jones
Feels like an old school ks.
Billy
It kind of does with some of these. Some of these older folks. All right, let's go to Joey. 30 seconds.
Caller
I can't f. I can't be serious after fake Barney, but. So I guess it was a roller coaster. Emotions for me. I was really tore up. I was really upset. And then I realized it was probably something petty that sent him to Louisville from Kentucky. So I'm not gonna let you know. I really don't think he can. The absence of Vince Mar is really going to affect us that much program wise. But then I thought after your Twitter space, I couldn't sleep last night. I was so upset when you said that Joe Craft would support him.
Billy
I didn't say that. Let me be clear. I didn't say that. I said someone asked me and I appreciate the call. Would Joe Kraft still be Kentucky for. And I said, yes, Joe Craft. Kentucky will always. Joe Craft is like us. Joe Craft is like us. Kentucky first bleeds blue. Bleeds blue. He is not gonna be switching to Louisville. The question was, is it plausible that he could do something for Vince at Louisville? And I said I didn't know, but it wouldn't shock me because they are best friends.
Shannon
It's definitely plausible.
Billy
It's plausible. I didn't say it would happen. Said it was plausible. Kentucky will always though be first for them. I'm sure of that. But would it shock me? Was my question. And I said no, I think you're fair.
Shannon
What you just said about that.
Billy
Yes. So that I do want to be clear about that list. This stuff is named after Joker. Kentucky still going to be first.
Shannon
Yes.
Billy
But you know, I would use it as an example of like, take my friend Tall. Tall ran for the Republican governor of Kentucky. Tall is a Democrat. But if he. If he ran for. Would I give him money? Yeah, probably because he's like my. One of my best friends.
Shannon
Yes.
Billy
That's the way I think that they would see it.
Shannon
What is Joe Crash relationship with Mark Stoops, then?
Billy
I assume positive. I have no reason to assume. But Vince was who he was the closest to.
Shannon
Yeah.
Billy
Much more so than anyone else. More than Mark, more than Cal, more than anybody. Was. Was Vince. Peggy, 30 seconds.
Caller
You said that Vince is married to the president's secretary.
Billy
Yeah, I don't know. I don't. She still. I don't think she still works. No, I don't think she's still work, but that's that they were. She did work there.
Caller
Okay. Okay. Well, then that throws up my scenario that he knew what was coming down. But going to Louisville, really, Vince, come on, give us all a break. And as far as him and Mark fighting, well, because Mark, in my opinion, has become a me, me, me, me coach.
Billy
There you go. Peggy with her take. Peggy comes in. He had people coming that way. I haven't heard him for a while. Just like.
Shannon
Well, they still.
Billy
If there's a pointed in you, Jerry, tomorrow, you got to make amends, Bill. Go ahead, Bill.
Caller
Times. It might have. Yes. Something that you all always say on the show that I cringe every time you say it is you got to do what's best for you. And so I know Matthew will say, well, I don't think this is best for Bench, but should he be allowed to make that decision himself?
Billy
And anyway, are you saying you are. You disagree that he should do what's best for him? Or like, I don't get your point. Totally. Bill.
Caller
On the show, you all will say, well, he's got to do what's best for him. And I just think that that's not always the case. I hate that he's gone. He did a great job for us, but, you know, he thinks it's best for him. You all always say, well, yeah, that's true.
Billy
I appreciate the call, but you know what? Yeah, you do have to do. I mean, okay, let's say I had no connection to Kentucky. I appreciate the call, Bill. And Vince was my friend, and he said, should I do? And I go, well, you gotta do what's best for you. But I do have a connection to Kentucky.
Shannon
Yeah.
Billy
And I do. Should he do what's best for him? Sure. But that doesn't mean. It's like when people say some. Like, I always hate when people who go, you know, in today's world, you can't Say what you want. Yes, you can. But you also have to deal with the reaction to it.
Shannon
Right.
Billy
You can say it, but the world doesn't guarantee you that people will not get mad at you.
Shannon
Very true.
Billy
I will stand up for anybody's right to say something and not go to prison for saying it. But I'm not gonna say. You have a right to not get yelled at back. Vince has a right to go to Louisville. If that's what's best for him, he should do it. But he's gonna get flipped off at the Dunkin Donuts. Like that's part like. You don't have a right to get the reaction you want. You have a right to do your behavior. But Ryan, the reaction is what it is.
Shannon
Like we said earlier in the show, if. If he's. If he's gone to Michigan State today we are celebrating Vince Merrill. But he didn't. He's going to our rival down the street. Our in state rival.
Billy
So he's.
Shannon
This is why the. The emotions are so high about this scenario.
Billy
Yes. Luther. 30 seconds.
Caller
Listen, enjoy the second rate fan base down on Floyd Street. They're bums. You're a bum. You make me sick. The fan bas makes me sick. Enjoy the train track. It ain't it. Put a bra on. Le.
Billy
Luther Dennis. Go ahead, Dennis.
Caller
Coach Morrow, man, I used to love but now I despise. You are a traitor. You have betrayed the UK B UK fans. And now my question to Matt Jones is who do we go after that's going to be a great recruiter? Someone like a Wesley Goodgard. Yes or no?
Billy
I would say if it were me, I would make CJ Conrad the tight end coach for this year. I think he's done a great job. I appreciate the call. Players love him. I think he's done a lot of the really good X and O. Like I think CJ Conrad is great. Is that your long term recruiting option? Probably not. But I don't know that they're going to be able to fill that Ryan by August.
Shannon
Yeah. This time of this is kind of weird.
Billy
What makes this so bad is the timing of it.
Shannon
Yeah. I don't even know where C.J. is now. He was at EKU for a year, then I think he went somewhere else last year.
Billy
Oh, is he? Yeah, he would be my pick. But I mean listen, the. The loss events is less about the tight end coach part of it.
Shannon
Correct.
Billy
That is. That is a replaceable thing.
Shannon
Good point. You can replace a coach. It's that perception now to me it's.
Billy
The recruiting and the perception. The perception is huge. I mean, listen, how many times does an assistant coach leaving make national news at a school like Kentucky? Never. Never. But Vince did.
Shannon
And it's all we've talked about.
Billy
All this was on. It was on sports like it was on the sports center social media pages.
Shannon
Tells you how big of a movie.
Billy
That tells you how big of a movie. And in college football, in the college football world, it will definitely be seen as something. All right, let's do. Let's do Jared, real quick. 30 seconds. Okay.
Caller
Vince Merrill. The dirty bird finger and the L's down. Shall now be the official Vince Merrill greeting. He did that to UK football, UK athletics and now bbn. Don't go to the loserville down the road. The real Jerry out.
Billy
There you go. Shannon, he says he's the real Jerry.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Billy
Aren't you disappointed in Jerry?
Matt Jones
Little bit. Yeah.
Billy
A little bit disappointed in Jerry.
Shannon
It was our second call, too.
Billy
He's like, he's probably called more about football than anybody. By the way, this catch by the guy on the A's was.
Shannon
Was insane. He's had like three, like three catches like that in the past.
Billy

Good conversations during the break. Great conversations. Radio, right, Shannon? We can't. Can't get into it. I wish we could, but we can't. All right, so I. I don't think I've ever told this story before, have I?
Shannon
I don't think you've ever told it on the air.
Billy
All right, so this is a true story, and it is. I use this story just to sort of remind you that people that we talk about as coaches, et cetera, are at their core just human beings with human emotions where little things can annoy you.
Shannon
Yes.
Billy
Right. So I have a friend who like a week and a half ago, I had a little negative interaction with, and when I stepped back and looked at it, I was like, this is over something really stupid, right?
Shannon
Yeah.
Billy
And sometimes it's just over. Especially with men. Just like pride.
Shannon
A lot of it. A lot of times it is time.
Billy
It's just pride.
Shannon
Yep.
Billy
So this is a true story. And I. I feel like it's been eight years, so you can say something.
Shannon
Eight years.
Billy
So when, when Vince first got offered a gig somewhere else that I can remember, a big one, it was Michigan.
Shannon
Michigan.
Billy
This was when Harbaugh first got to Michigan. Right. So what we're talking maybe 2017.
Shannon
I don't remember when it was something like that.
Billy
And I would often during that time talk with Vince and he would tell me his thought process. And he called me and we, this was one of the times we were talking about it and he said something to the effect of, you know, I'm considering this. And I was like, you know, man, I'd understand Michigan.
Shannon
It's Michigan football.
Billy
It's hardball. I get it.
Shannon
Before we had our 10 win seasons, it's Michigan.
Billy
I think that we, I think maybe we hadn't had a 10 win season yet. But we were good. We were on the up, right?
Shannon
True.
Billy
And I said, I understand. And he, he said, well, I don't really want to, but I don't really want to leave. I go, oh, okay. And then he said, but it doesn't feel like Mark really cares if I stay or go. And I said, oh. I was like, he hasn't really expressed that to you. And he goes, not really. And I went, oh, okay. Well, I was like, I'm sure he does. Remember, these are lifelong friends.
Shannon
Yeah.
Billy
I'm like, well, I'm sure he does. Hour later, phone rings. It's Mark. Mark says, do you think he's gonna go? And I said, I don't know. You know, I'm not sure. And he said, I don't understand why Vince won't just call and tell me that he wants to stay and that he wants to be here. And I said, well, why don't you call him? And he was like, well, I mean, I think he should call me. Then I call Vince. I'm like, why don't you call Mark? And he was like, well, if he wants me to stay, he should call me. I'm. I'm not making this up.
Shannon
Oh, I know.
Billy
I'm a radio host. Shannon.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Billy
Both of these coaches who are both having success and are friends are both saying, why won't the other one call me? So I called Dwayne Peavey and I said, dwayne, this is what they're saying. And he was like, are you serious? I said, yeah, what do we do? And he goes, all right, I'll call them both. And he three ways them in, and 20 minutes later, I get a call from Vince. He's staying.
Shannon
All it took.
Billy
All it took was the two of them getting on the phone together, but neither of them wanted to make the first phone call.
Matt Jones
It took pride.
Billy
It took me getting Dwayne to bring the two of them together. Dwayne, by the way, the basketball ad at the top. Not even the. He wasn't even over football.
Shannon
Right.
Billy
It took bringing him in to get these two people who'd had a lifelong relationship to just put their egos aside and talk to each other.
Shannon
Yep.
Billy
Right. And 20 minutes later, it was fine. And I always think about that story, to think like, don't let stupid stuff like ego get in the way of a good thing. Okay, fast forward eight years later. I don't know what all's happened in the interim since then. I don't talk to Mark nearly as much as I used to back then, almost never. And I still talked to Vince, although I hadn't in a while. I don't know, maybe that maybe, like it wouldn't have taken a phone call this time. Maybe it's a lot more than that. Probably is. But it is always important to remember that sometimes when you're sitting there and thinking about these big things, sometimes it's just human beings and their frailties that lead to things like this happening.
Shannon
Well, you talked about it and Shannon just said it. A lot of times it's pride. Especially for men, it's pride. So hearing what you just said, I blame you and Duane Peavey for this split this week. Why didn't you guys get them? Did them together last week?
Billy
Doesn't work here anymore. And I did not know this was going down, so I'm not sure that it would have. It would have played out exactly the same this time. But I mean, are you at its core. Let me ask you this. I have a strong answer to this, but I'll ask you, at its core, do you think this is ultimately about two friends who just couldn't make it work out?
Shannon
I think there's some truth to that. I think it comes down to this. Is this how I take it? I think Vince has seen the writing on the wall. He doesn't like the way things are going at uk. He's got a chance for go to three years. I'm taking it. Friendship aside, I think it was about one of the perception of the program is not in good standing right now not the way he thinks it should be.
Billy
I would disagree with that. I mean, I do think that's probably part of it. I mean, if they had won 10 games, would he. Yeah. But I do think. I think this is just a relationship that kind of broke but just got.
Shannon
That's kind of sad. That is kind of sad.
Billy
But he's going to Louisville, so, like still anywhere else.
Shannon
Anywhere else, I'm okay. He could probably go to an SEC school. I'd be okay. You can't go to Louisville.
Billy
Yeah, can't go. So, you know, I wish. I wish it hadn't happened. But now we're going to still talk about this more obviously. But going forward, I'm on Kentucky side.
Shannon
Yes.
Billy
You know, we got to do the bet like we got. We got to hope we win. Right. Doesn't do us any good to hope we lose. I'm never going to be the person that says, well, I hope we have a bad year so we can move like, I'm never going to be that guy we needed to win. Now do I think we will? I'm not real confident right now, but I hope we do.
Shannon
Does the temperature of Mark stoops his seat get a little hotter now?
Billy
It was already hot, but now it's like scalding.
Shannon
I think so too.
Billy
Now it's like scalding.
Shannon
I think so too.
Billy
So because. Because. Because we're gonna have a summer recruiting where they're probably gonna get a lot of guys and we're not.
Shannon
Will some people decommit that Vince will.
Billy
Bring two commitments so I don't think it cause shit. It can't be that many people decommission. KSR Podcast Episode Summary: June 10, 2025 – Hour 2
Presented by iHeartPodcasts and Sports Talk 790 (WKRD-AM), this episode of Kentucky Sports Radio (KSR) delves deep into the recent developments surrounding Vince Merrill, the University of Kentucky (UK) football program, and the ensuing fan reactions. Host Matt Jones, along with co-hosts Billy and Shannon, engage in passionate discussions, interact with listeners, and explore the dynamics of leadership within the sports community.
The second hour kicks off with Billy expressing his frustration over recent events involving Vince Merrill, the UK football coach. He recounts an incident where a fan reportedly threw “Ls” (a gesture symbolizing a loss) at Merrill in a Dunkin’ Donuts in Frankfurt.
Billy [02:21]: “We had a caller in the last segment say he went by Dunkin Donuts and threw the Ls down in Frankfurt to Vince Merrill.”
Shannon initially believed the caller's story but later admitted some skepticism, which was later confirmed when Merrill himself called in to clarify the incident.
Shannon [02:22]: “Yes.”
Matt Jones [02:26]: “No.”
This confrontation highlighted the strained relationship between Merrill and certain segments of the UK fan base. As the discussion unfolds, Shannon and Billy delve into the emotional impact of Merrill’s actions, emphasizing the deep-seated loyalty and passion of UK supporters.
A significant portion of the conversation centers around the leadership styles of Mark Stoops, the current head coach, and past figures like Caliperi. Billy draws parallels between presidential leadership styles and coaching methodologies to illustrate his points.
Billy [19:07]: “Caliperi was a top-down leader at his best would listen to his assistance and then make a decision. At his worst, he stopped listening to them.”
Billy [20:05]: “Mark Stoops has always been a group think mentality. When Stoops is at his best, he would hear all these people, they would work together and they would come to a solution.”
Shannon concurs, noting the effectiveness of Stoops’s collaborative approach during the spring when the UK football program showed cultural improvements.
Shannon [21:59]: “This spring we heard that the culture and everything was better in the UK football program. So do you think that maybe Stoops is trying to go back to that? What made him successful? Get back to that.”
The hosts discuss the challenges Stoops faces in maintaining team cohesion and the potential reasons behind Vince Merrill’s departure, attributing it partially to differing leadership dynamics and personal relationships within the coaching staff.
Listeners passionately voice their disappointment over Vince Merrill’s decision to join Louisville, reflecting a mix of personal sentiments and broader team loyalty. One caller, Jesse, provides firsthand accounts of the altercation with Merrill.
Jesse [15:01]: “I drove past him and gave the dirty bird up in the air. And then he pulled up next to me and then I gave him the L's down as he was.”
Billy and Shannon use these calls to underscore the intensity of fan emotions and the deep-rooted rivalry between Kentucky and Louisville.
Billy [15:24]: “We know that it did, Shannon. There's no question it happened.”
Shannon [27:34]: “It's totally understandable how invested our listeners are in this situation.”
Billy shares a personal story from eight years prior, illustrating how pride and lack of communication nearly derailed the relationship between Vince Merrill and Mark Stoops. This anecdote serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of open dialogue and humility in leadership roles.
Billy [38:27]: “Both of these coaches who are both having success and are friends are both saying, why won't the other one call me? So I called Dwayne Peavey and I said, Dwayne, this is what they're saying. And he was like, are you serious? I said, yeah, what do we do? And he goes, all right, I'll call them both.”
Billy [42:28]: “Sometimes when you're sitting there and thinking about these big things, sometimes it's just human beings and their frailties that lead to things like this happening.”
Shannon adds to this narrative by highlighting how pride, especially among men, can hinder constructive conversations and resolutions.
Shannon [39:17]: “A lot of times it is pride.”
The hosts speculate on the future of the UK football program in light of Merrill’s departure. They discuss potential impacts on recruiting, team morale, and overall program perception. Billy proposes possible interim solutions, such as appointing CJ Conrad as the tight ends coach, though he acknowledges the challenges in filling key positions promptly.
Billy [34:12]: “CJ Conrad is great. Is that your long-term recruiting option? Probably not. But I don't know that they're going to be able to fill that Ryan by August.”
Shannon echoes concerns about recruiting and the overarching perception of the program, emphasizing the gravity of Merrill’s exit.
Shannon [34:25]: “The perception is huge. I mean, listen, how many times does an assistant coach leaving make national news at a school like Kentucky? Never. But Vince did. It tells you how big of a movie it is.”
As the episode progresses, Billy and Shannon reaffirm their unwavering support for the UK program, despite the setbacks. They emphasize the importance of unity and hope for the team’s success moving forward.
Billy [44:54]: “We got to do the bet like we got. We got to hope we win. Right. Doesn't do us any good to hope we lose.”
Shannon [44:53]: “Yes.”
In closing, the hosts reflect on the emotional rollercoaster experienced by fans and the broader implications for the UK athletic community. They remain optimistic yet realistic about the challenges ahead, underscoring the resilience of the fan base and the program’s potential to rebound.
