This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio Monday, June 16th. I am Matt Jones here in the summertime and it is a Clark's Puppet shop Phone line is 859-280-2287. A Vision Auto Glass text machine is 772-774-5254. And this edition sponsored by the TJ Smith Law Office. If you call TJ he'll make them pay. Big day today. A lot of stuff to talk about and I'm we're gonna pick another KSR comes to you show. So just nobody call in yet. But Northern Kentucky be on the lookout.
Drew Franklin
Oh, Northern Kentucky, Northern Kentucky.
Matt Jones
We, you know, we don't do a lot of shows at north. We do them at the the sports bar with the wings I like which I've eaten at 40 times and I can't remember the name of it ever. What is it?
Drew Franklin
How are we drawing a blank barley corn. Thank you.
Matt Jones
Always, always, always draw blank on the name of that barley corns. Anyway, we're going to go up there this week so just hang tight. I'll tell you how to do it. But Northern Kentucky be on the lookout because the Reds play Thursday at 12:40.
Drew Franklin
Oh.
Matt Jones
So I'm going to do I want to do it up there so I can get to the game because it's a holiday game even though we're doing a show. So Drew Franklin is back. Yay. After a week and a half. First of all, let's say happy 40th birthday.
Ryan
Thank you very much.
Matt Jones
Realize until I realized it was your birthday and I was like, he really is 40. I never thought, I didn't think you'd get to 40, to be honest with you.
Ryan
Questions myself.
Matt Jones
I didn't know if it would happen. So congratulations. Happy.
Ryan
I beat the odds. Ready for this new decade. Had a lot of fun while I was away.
Matt Jones
What'd you do?
Ryan
I went to Mexico with a bunch of my best friends who also turned 40 around here in Mexico. Went to Cancun, had a great Time.
Matt Jones
You didn't post any pictures of that. Does that mean there were shenanigans?
Ryan
No, it's one of those I'll do a later gram where I just never got around to it. I'm very good at staying off my phone, which is.
Matt Jones
Which is a weird time to do it, considering what happened. And then you went to New York, right?
Ryan
Yeah, my wife broke her foot in Mexico, so we almost canceled New York at the last minute because it is a big walking city. But she scooted her way up there, and we had a fun week. Got a little leg scooter, had a good time.
Matt Jones
You know, Shannon, that means Abby was messed up in Mexico, living on refi. Fried drinks. QUOTE Tim McGraw.
Ryan
But per tradition, impeccable timing with my vacations, I'm now three for three on leaving at the worst possible time.
Matt Jones
Imagine you were on vacation when Stoops considered going to anym. Yep. When Caliperi left for Arkansas.
Ryan
Only took off that Monday. That week.
Matt Jones
And now this. You have been like, when you leave, town falls apart.
Ryan
And I, you know, leaving. I even consider that when I'm going. I mean, this was a little more about my birthday, but on the timing, I'm like, mid June, great, time to go. Nothing's going on. The show's in good hands. What could possibly go wrong? And what day did it happen? Monday, Tuesday. I don't know what day it was Sunday.
Matt Jones
I don't know.
Ryan
Regardless, I hadn't been on my phone, and I don't know when. And Abby was like, you should check Twitter. I'm like, no, I'm good. She's like, no, you should probably check Twitter. I'm like, no, I really don't want to look at Twitter. She's like, here's your phone. Look at Twitter. And that. That's when I'd realized I was a few hours behind but saw the big Vince news.
Matt Jones
So, generally speaking, I. You know, I always took my vacations the first couple weeks of June because generally speaking, nothing happens. You could come back, still get the draft. You know, the portals were all closed, like there was really nothing going on. But. But this has been different. And luckily, we were here. So let's just start with this. Shannon, pull up. Vince gave a goodbye message to the fans that I do want to play and see if it has any impact on anybody. But let's just start with you. I mean, I've probably. Of this group, all three of us know Vince well. We all three went to the wedding. We all three are friends. You know, I'm not Going to rank who knows him the best. But you are would be close to me if you're not right there with me. What, what did you think when you heard the news?
Ryan
Well, first of all, you mentioned being close. I drunk dialed Vince from Mexico the night before this happened. He did not answer. But we were playing a phone roulette game. You know the trend, tell people good night. We all decided around the dinner table we're gonna call people, tell them good night. I called Mario. Mario. I went to. We all had to scroll. I went to the last name Ems. So I called Mario Maitland, called Marilyn Manson and Vince Merrow to tell them all good night. Little did I know a few hours later Vince would be leaving. But I did call Vince.
Matt Jones
You really wanted to tell him good night. Like it was.
Ryan
I had no idea any was going on. Just simply wanted to say good night. Vince probably seen that trend, but I did have that odd, odd timing going on there. But yeah, I know. I like you guys. It's a little different this coach leaving than any others.
Matt Jones
But. Were you surprised?
Ryan
Oh, shocked. Absolutely shocked. I thought this last time around when we had the Pizza Ranch episode, I kind of thought that might be the one. But when he didn't do it then, even though his comments were weird, I just thought this, the Vince Louisville thing, it's just, it's a gimmick that comes up every few months. And to see it actually happen, especially it's talking about the timing mid June, I couldn't believe it. I think it's a horrible, horrible decision on his part.
Matt Jones
I think it's a horrible decision too.
Ryan
I don't think he's considering legacy and how much people are really not liking that.
Matt Jones
So I mean, I'm not, I won't go into details, but I talked to him for like an hour on, on Friday and you know, I had to look, I had to look at him say, I love you man, but I hope you lose every game. You know, I hope you lose every single game. He was like, oh man, you know, I was like, I'm just being honest with you. I hope you lose every game. Like I. And I, I don't know, I kind of said to him, I don't know why you would be surprised that I would say that. Like you're going to Louisville. I told you, like I told you this was going to be everybody's reaction. And you know, he explained to me some of his reasons and I get, I get it, but I don't get it because it's Louisville and you know I mean, I, I said to him, I talked to him just a little bit about the difference in the two places, you know, because I, I've lived, I live in both places now and they're very different. And one of the things, again, I don't want to go in the conversation, but one of the things I said to him was, you know how you could come into KS Bar and get a standing ovation and you know how you could go into Jeff Ruby's and everybody looks at you? I was like, in Louisville, they're not even gonna know who you are. Like, they won't. Like, they don't. Half the city doesn't even care about sports. And then of the half that care about sports, half of them are Kentucky fans and half of them are Louisville fans, right? So I said, but you gotta realize the horse industry is huge. You got ups. You got. I mean, it is a city and this is a part of the city, but it's not the whole city. Like, it is Lexington. We all, even people in Lexington who don't care about sports, they're almost forced to care about sports. But in Louisville, that's not true. And I was just like, it's just going to be different. And I think Ryan, I don't know that he thought through that the way that, that we know, maybe should have.
Drew Franklin
And that's what's kind of surprising. He surely he had to understand a little bit that we were all going to not.
Matt Jones
I don't think he did.
Drew Franklin
That's crazy. I mean, he lived this rivalry for 12 years now.
Matt Jones
He gave this morning, Shannon, you're going to play. He gave a. This was weird to me, I have to tell you because I like look at the behind the scenes things. Athlete Advantage is the entity that does a lot, if not all of the nil for UK football. Right. Vince is now the coach at Louisville and Athlete Advantage put out a Vince Merrow video with music. Shannon. I don't understand why that happened. And I, I like the Athlete Advantage people, but you are nil people for Kentuck. Why are you putting out a video but nevertheless like 4k to.
Ryan
It's well done.
Matt Jones
They put some editing in it. Hey, Athlete Advantage, you are for Kentucky. What are you doing? Nevertheless, they did here was the statement. Let's see if it has any effect on you all.
Mario
I want to talk to you guys. The big blue nation. I really love you guys and I really appreciate. I know because you guys really helped me build my career here with your support from when I first came here. I remember A buddy told me, why are you going there? You guys gonna be fired in two years. I was the lowest paid coach. I heard all the jokes. I wanted to build and bring players in so we can win and we can have some pride and dignity. It is hard. I'm not gonna even sugarcoat it. Hard because of my loyalty to really, you guys, the fans. But this is a job opportunity I feel I can't pass up. I passed up several other ones that people you. All you guys, as the fans know. But just like a lot of you guys, you got families, a lot of you guys had opportunities with different jobs, and you move and take it. You doing what's best for your family? I'm doing what's best for my career. I really enjoy being here 13 years with you guys because you guys are a really good fan base to the big blue nation. One of the best. I'm pretty sure y' all gonna boo me when I come back, though, but I really do love you guys.
Matt Jones
All right, so, Shannon, I'll let you go first.
Shannon
Yeah. The dramatic piano music, like, is that supposed to make me feel sympathetic towards Vince Merrill?
Matt Jones
Well, did it?
Shannon
No, absolutely not. He said he was loyal. He was for a long time, but.
Matt Jones
He was for a long time was.
Shannon
Flushed down the toilet vents when you went directly to our biggest rival. So it doesn't have any effect. I mean, I still believe and still feel the same way that I felt last week when we were talking about this. I guess it's nice that he had a final goodbye to big blue nation, but it doesn't change anything for me.
Matt Jones
Are you surprised, Ryan? That athlete advantage puts that out.
Drew Franklin
I didn't know that until you said that. And I can't believe they're the entity that put that video out. It's like a swan song for Vince. I'm like, that's like Shannon said, that sappy piano music is almost like he died or something.
Ryan
I think there was a violin in there, too.
Matt Jones
Is that live violin? Was that a live for it?
Drew Franklin
You know, he. We said it's about Caliperi. He chose to leave us. Vince Merrill chose to leave us.
Matt Jones
Club Blue did not put out a Coach Cal. No, they didn't like Lee video.
Ryan
No, it's. It's very odd. If I were Vince's PR coach, I'd say, you've done enough interviews. I feel like I. He's.
Matt Jones
I. I think he should have put a statement like that out last week. Probably on his own, probably without the piano music. Yeah. Just look at.
Shannon
Just look at Just in writing would have been fine.
Matt Jones
Yeah, Just look into the camera and say, hey, guys, I love you.
Drew Franklin
With that being said.
Matt Jones
Said, you know, I'm taking my talents to Louisville. That's right. Like, he should have done something like that. It's. It's a week later. Okay, whatever. I mean, he probably wanted to say something. I'm like, you, Drew. He's going to regret it. He's going to regret it. He just is. He's going to regret it. And I, you know, I get it. I'm sure he won't regret it with their winning games next year and all that, but he's going to regret it. He is. I mean, that's. But I hope. I hope he ends up happy. I don't. I don't. I do think these coaches, they all. This goes back to Rick Patino. They all don't realize that they are cogs in the machine. They are not the Machine. Rick Patino and John Calipari and Vince Merrow and I don't care who's next. You're always secondary to the machine. And so is Matt Jones. So is Tom Leach. So is K. Wood Letford. We're all like, we all do this, and then when it's over, like, everybody will move to the next one. And yet they sometimes think that, like, we're all going to sit around and cry and it's people, you know, it's the summer. We're going to talk about this because there's not a whole lot else to talk about. But then everybody's going to move on. And, yes, they're going to boo you. That's how it's going to be. Rick got booed. Cal got booed. They were bigger than Vince. He's going to get booed, too.
Ryan
Yeah. And he'll never be the legend. He could have been here if he had just. Even if he went to a different school off of UK schedule, he would have always had a place in Lexington. But now at Louisville, if it doesn't work there, they'll chew you up and spit you out. We saw it happen to Kenny Payne. Now he's a joke in Louisville is you can end up where both places don't like you if you don't do well. There's.
Matt Jones
Yeah, that. Now that would be highly. Well, yeah. What if. What if they don't do well? Yeah.
Ryan
If in three years he's gone, I mean, he's going to be a joke.
Matt Jones
At Louisville with neither places at home. I do like also how these guys. Rick did the same thing. Or like, I love the state so much. Come on.
Ryan
Look like the ponies in the state.
Matt Jones
No, you don't. I mean, like, well, the video is a little much for me. Not that. Not Vince saying something I think he needed. I. I'm good with him doing that, but the music and I. This is the third time I've said I'll drop it after this. I don't know what Athlete Advantage is doing. Your job is to get us players. I don't understand how, like, making the Louisville recruiting coach sympathetic is somehow a positive in getting players. I have no idea what athlete advantage is doing.
Ryan
They should have done it. Get out of here.
Matt Jones
The day he left. Like, the UK side of this should have been, all right, Louisville, you all make the videos for Kentucky fans. I can't believe they did that.
Drew Franklin
I have a shock when you said that because I didn't know they were behind it. It's like we said with Cal. Like we did. We said we, Cal. You know, we were here long before you got here. We're going to be here long after you left. Same thing with Vince. We were here long before you got here. We're going to be long after you left.
Ryan
Well, do you think they paid for the rights to that music? Did that come out of our collective the.
Drew Franklin
To play that sound, sappy piano music?
Matt Jones
They went to the UK Band orchestra and they're like, we need you to play Shannon a sappy song.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
They said, should we add violin? Yes. One violin.
Shannon
Let's make it generic enough. Let's see where it doesn't get flagged by anybody.
Ryan
I heard they tried to get Everett McCorvey and he wouldn't do it.
Matt Jones
Was going to go. God bless. Didn't end up happening. 859280, 2287. The text machine is 772-774-5254. We'll take a break and be right back. KSI.

Drew Franklin
I know you're going to boom me.
Matt Jones
I love you. I should have done that video, but I actually think it's one of those circumstances where it's almost better to not be overly produced, right? Like. Like the more real it is, you know, the better, in my opinion.
Ryan
I would have liked just a one last good Vince tweet out to BB and just let him write it up on Twitter however it comes out.
Matt Jones
I brought you a bunch men. G R O A N. I will miss Vince's horrible spelling. Worst speller. Like, worst speller we've ever had. Who was. I love vids, but who was a worst speller?
Drew Franklin
Lonnie Demery had some bad ones.
Ryan
That's true.
Shannon
Like the Marcus spelling be very true.
Matt Jones
Lonnie Timmer had some ones that.
Ryan
Two of the best Twitter accounts.
Matt Jones
No doubt. I mean, he is. Vince is not a good speller and he loved grown man. G R O A N. That was a big one for him. He probably did that. He probably did that one ten times, didn't he?
Ryan
Yeah. Big on that one. Spell check would have helped Vince on Twitter. That's why that would have been the best way to say goodbye.
Matt Jones
That's okay.
Shannon
I don't think spell check would have changed grown though, you know, it's actually right, but it's not the right context.
Matt Jones
That's true. It's a man who's very frustrated by things. He's a grown man. That's true. That's what hurts him is spelling. That's just. Hey, 59280 2287. One person said, I watched the protest this weekend in New York and wondered if I would see Drew getting caught up in it, since I know he was there.
Ryan
I was there.
Matt Jones
Did you not get caught up in it?
Ryan
Oh, I was all caught up in it. That's Bryant park is where I was staying. I mean, I looked out my window and it was in front of me. So I said there was some interesting looking people there. Well, we had a rainy day on our last day. Abby's on a scooter, so we couldn't do a whole lot, and we just sat in a coffee shop in Bryant park and watched the whole thing.
Matt Jones
I'm not really. You know, I don't. I'm not a big protester. I don't know that I've ever actually protested anything because, I mean, I'm big on, like, do something that'll do something. And, like, I just don't. I think people should do it if they want to do it. It's just not what I usually do. But I actually got up Saturday, and I was like, you know what? Maybe I'll walk down to one of those. And I was all like, ready? And then it started raining, and I was like, you know what? I'm not. I mean, Shannon, we can all have our opinions, but we don't need to get wet.
Shannon
That's right. Yeah. We all have our limitations.
Matt Jones
I mean, you know, the rats.
Shannon
But don't get him wet.
Matt Jones
He's like, the rats are playing. I don't need to get. Yeah. I mean, don't feed me after midnight. Don't get me wet. That's right.
Ryan
That's what made it fun to watch up there. It was pouring, and people had costumes and sun, and they were just getting soaked.
Matt Jones
Okay. All right, let's go to Adam. What's up, Adam? What's up, Matt? Look, I love Vince. I appreciate what he did for the program, but you cannot claim loyalty after you. You can't just, you know, you can't be a husband and say, well, I hadn't cheated for 13 years.
Caller
Now I did this time.
Matt Jones
But that is true. You can't. You can't be loyal. You can only be loyal to one. That's true. There is a little bit of that, honey. Yeah, I cheated here at the end. But the other 13 years were amazing, weren't they? Yeah, that. That's totally foul. You know, don't wish him well. I hope Louis will finish last in the SEC. Hope we beat him by 90. All right. I appreciate the call. Even in the SEC. Yeah. You can't. You. You can't do that. There's. There is a. There's a part of that that's kind of.
Drew Franklin
Well, you talk to him. Does he not have even a little bit understand why fans are upset?
Matt Jones
I mean, I think he was surprised.
Drew Franklin
Really?
Matt Jones
I think he was surprised. I think he was surprised. As strange as this sounds, I think the moment that it hit him maybe was when the guy Dunkin Donuts flipped him off. I know that's crazy, but I think he, like, I mean, think about. Is very hard. When you are in a position of power, authority, whatever to be. You get. You can be disconnected from reality. Right. If all you see are people praising you, you can forget that there's a different view out there. Right. When you put people in a bubble, I mean, the best example of this in sports was John, Cal, Peri. He was in a bubble. No one would tell him that anyone felt negatively about him, except they would say, matt Jones and Drew Franklin do that. The only information that got filtered to Cal was, everybody loves you except Matt Jones and Drew Franklin and Kyle Tucker. That's what he got told. And so his view was, the world loves me, Matt Jones, Drew Franklin, and Kyle Tucker screwing it up. It was not reality, but that's all that was told to him. Then we have coaches who are too connected to reality. I almost think Mark Stoops is like that. Mark Stoops hears, almost seeks it out. I think that's a mistake. I think Vince was in a world where no one ever told him anything but they loved him, and then all of a sudden, it flips, and he just didn't see it coming. Right? And you and me, Drew and Ryan, Mario and Shannon, we live in a world where we get on. We spend a lot of our days on social media, so we know that people hate us. I don't have. It falls in my lap, right? But I think a lot of times these coaches don't. And when you live like that, Drew, and then it hits you in reality, it's kind of like, whoa, what's happening? I mean, when you are any type of leader, you can create your own world. You can go to places where you're only cheered and the people that boo you can just go, no, that's not real. And you got to be careful about that. And in this case, I think he was just surprised. He knows now. Yeah, but I think he was surprised.
Ryan
I don't know that. I'd say he underestimates the rivalry, but he probably didn't understand how much it would really upset people that he would leave for Louisville. Even him saying, y' all are going to boo me. He's being playful with it. But there are people who do not want to see him in Lexington again, like, ever. And I don't think he saw that getting that bad.
Matt Jones
It's a delicate situation because you don't want to open yourself up as a leader or as somebody in a public eye to constant negativity that's, like, bad for your mental health. But then if you also, like, completely shut yourself off from reality, you can have no sense of what the world is like. And that balance, I think, is really hard for people, especially code. It seems like presidents, governors, coaches, they seem to have the hardest time with it. Ryan.
Drew Franklin
So what happens the next time he walks through KS Bar or Jeff Ruby here in town?
Matt Jones
He shouldn't. He's a Louisville guy now. He shouldn't come. He shouldn't be at Jeff Ruby's in Lexington.
Drew Franklin
Agreed.
Matt Jones
So we'll take a break, talk about some other stuff as KSI. TJ Smith, personal injury attorney. Call tj. He'll make him pay.
Shannon
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio, presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Matt Jones
No, I'm good.
Shannon
There's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
I really like this song. I know it's like, cheesy and stupid. Shannon. But I've always liked it.
Shannon
Yeah, but so is every other Tim McGraw song. And it's good.
Matt Jones
They're all cheesy and stupid. But he had. He had a run that. It was pretty good, right?
Shannon
Good stuff.
Matt Jones
What's Your favorite? Tim McGraw.
Drew Franklin
So got a barbecue stand in my white T shirt.
Matt Jones
A lot of people are. Yeah, that's that. What's that called?
Drew Franklin
Killing me in that mini skirt?
Shannon
Something like that.
Matt Jones
Something like.
Drew Franklin
Something like that.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I like the one where he's like, put me out on the farm and some land and leave me alone.
Ryan
That's a good one.
Matt Jones
What's it called where he's like, put me on the farm with.
Shannon
Oh, I know. The one I like is don't take the girl.
Ryan
That's the one. That's the one.
Shannon
Thompson.
Matt Jones
And take Tommy Tom. Take Jimmy Johnson. I always thought it was here that he picked two people with famous names. He picked the Dallas Cowboys coach and Tommy Thompson at the. At the time was like a governor of Wisconsin. It's like he picked two names that were real names, not a best friend.
Ryan
Named Bo at the time when he came out.
Matt Jones
There you go, Bobo.
Ryan
Both of us did.
Matt Jones
Both of us. Padgett. So. Yeah, but what Is the one where he's like, he wants. He has yard.
Shannon
He has a yard.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Shannon
Give me a little more than that. He's talking about the rockers pointing to the west.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Pulling hard rocker tears towards the way.
Shannon
The green grass grows.
Matt Jones
The one I like.
Drew Franklin
Yes.
Matt Jones
Yes.
Drew Franklin
Great.
Matt Jones
What did you say about it?
Ryan
In the yard?
Matt Jones
It had a yard.
Shannon
Watching his corn pop up.
Matt Jones
And he said, leave me alone. I was close. This segment sponsored by bluegrass roofing and consulting. They want you to know they're here for you. They're not a door knocking company. You come to them. I've had, like a number of people in the last couple weeks talk to me that they've used them. Bluegrass roofing consulting will never require an upfront deposit. The only exchange money after your job is complete. Go to bluegrass roofing and consulting dot com. They have a lifetime warranty on any full replacement or, excuse me, lifetime warranty and full roof replacement or 5% off the entire job if you use the code KSR. It's bluegrass roofing and consulting.com or 1-800-roof pro. Okay, so here's the deal. Thursday, I'm going to the reds game. So we're going to do our show in northern Kentucky. Don't call this number. I'm going to give you another number if you would like to host us. And we are open to a number of different options. The only thing is I can't, like, do an ad for your business. We could sit at your business, but I can't do an ad for it. You can't say we're coming, but, like, well, we could do it. We could do it at your house. We could do it at a community center. We could do it, like, anywhere you think we're open to. Billy Drew is going to be our first, like, I guess cut off. Okay, so he is sitting there. Operator, not operators. Operator is standing by. Billy, here's the number. It's the 98 1, the bull number. If you would like to host us, but you need to be in northern Kentucky. I have to be able to leave your house and get to the reds game by 1240.
Drew Franklin
You can do it.
Matt Jones
Okay. 859-8594-2232-9985-9422, 3299. Operator is standing by and he will pick the best couple and then let us know and we'll pick where we're going.
Ryan
And we trust Billy with this for.
Matt Jones
You to call 859-422-3299. Our first one was great.
Drew Franklin
The other day, KSR comes to your house with grandpa's and Grandma's. Drew was awesome.
Matt Jones
It was great. She had the best food set up.
Drew Franklin
Yep.
Matt Jones
The Judd and Laura. Laura and they. It was. It was awesome.
Ryan
I will say I was pretty glad to get away, but I was jealous of the first house show. I saw the pictures. Looks like a great time.
Matt Jones
So. 8, 5 9, 4 2, 2, 3, 29 9. Tyler Hero. Look at Mario shaking his head. So Tyler Hero went on a stream with his name. Is his name Aiden Ross?
Ryan
Yep.
Matt Jones
Is that his name? I guess. What is. What's his talent? Why does.
Ryan
Why do people watch streaming?
Matt Jones
But when you say streaming, what does he do in the stream? Does he play video games? He just talks.
Ryan
I think he built his brand as a vid. As a video game guy, but now you just go live and leave it running and make seems awful.
Matt Jones
I don't know much about him, but Tyler Hero was on with him. And in the course of the conversation, it looked to me, I don't want to disparage anybody, but it looked to me like maybe some illegal substances.
Ryan
I think he had at least one cornbread himself.
Matt Jones
Just looking at it, I don't know. But he said that he didn't believe any history existed prior to 1950, which is a really stupid statement, but I don't even know what he means by it. Does he mean, like, Nothing happened before 1950? Does he mean that? Like he thinks things happened, but he didn't believe they happened? There were a lot of pretty important things, Shannon, that happened right before 1950.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, no kidding.
Matt Jones
Like World War II, the Holocaust. I mean, there was a lot of stuff that happened right. Right before 1950. He also said he didn't think the moon landing happened, which I don't think he knows happened after 1950. You know, I like Tyler Hero, but that was one of those Drew that. I watched it and I go, someone get him.
Drew Franklin
Yes.
Matt Jones
And like move him out. Don't. I don't. Don't be on that anymore. It's also like, isn't he in his mid to late 20s now? Like, he's not a kid anymore?
Ryan
Not really showing off that UK education he got for a year. He also said he didn't believe in Wilt Chamberlain, kind of. He's like, I've never seen a picture of him. Don't know how he played him.
Matt Jones
He didn't believe in Wilt Chamberlain. Like, does he think that we just made Wilt Chamberlain up?
Ryan
And at first, I think at one point they're like, well, what year do you not believe in. And I thought he was going to go like 1800s, 1700, 1950. I mean, your parents probably aren't that much.
Matt Jones
They're still younger. There are videos of 1950.
Ryan
You understand he had grandparents that probably remembered 1950.
Matt Jones
We still, I mean, television existed in 1950. I. Listen, I'm not trying to break it down too much, but there is a point where, again, you're sort of in this reality where, like, you think you can say things that have no consequences. I mean, some people. I was looking online, some people were really offended. I'm not gonna be really offended. But I'm like, tyler, why say such really stupid stuff?
Drew Franklin
He says, nothing happened after 1950 or 1950.
Ryan
He doesn't believe anything.
Drew Franklin
But the moon landing was after 1950.
Matt Jones
I just said that.
Drew Franklin
Wilt Chamberlain after 1950. So I think he needs to understand. Maybe there's a time you need to talk and time you.
Shannon
Yeah, but he said before 1950. You're saying all this stuff happened after 1950. Regardless, it's a dumb statement. I have no idea what he even means by that. You just think the world only started, like, post 1950.
Matt Jones
I think he just thinks things happened, but he doesn't know that they happen. Well, he said.
Ryan
He said, how would we know anything before 1950? How would we know? It was his main point.
Matt Jones
Well, but, you know, again, let's say I've seen him talk about God and his belief in God and Jesus. I've seen him say that.
Shannon
I think that was before 1950, Tyler.
Matt Jones
I mean, someone could go, well, what do you think about. I mean, Jesus was before 1950. And he'd probably go, you know, like, he'd go, which, like, you know, I believe in Jesus and God, but there's a level of faith, I think you can say that most of the stuff we read, it's existed for a long time. I'll believe it. You don't want to. You want to take the view. You don't. How do you believe anything, Tyler? Like, you're not unless you're there.
Ryan
Another one of my favorites. He said, how do we even know Columbus when he got to America? Like, how would we know that? I don't know, maybe record.
Matt Jones
Well, Wikipedia. We're probably giving him way too much analysis, more than he needed to be on his Aiden Ross live stream. But it wasn't the finest moment for. You know, when you're going, these are student athletes.
Ryan
Well, I'm down for some conspiracy theories, but that one, he was.
Matt Jones
That was even too far too Far for me.
Ryan
I'll meet him at a couple of those. Yeah, maybe some of those. I'll meet him in the middle. But nothing before 1950s.
Matt Jones
Jordan. Go ahead, Jordan.
Caller
Yeah. So I was just thinking, man, like, do you think that we'll see more guys, like alumni guys, start maybe coming back around campus now that Pope's back? I mean, guys like Anthony Davis and.
Matt Jones
I mean. Well, I mean, those guys. Do you mean more than when?
Caller
Maybe just since, like, you know, like the recent. When Cal started on John Wall. John Wall's been very consistent about showing up the games. I know he's not been playing, but he's always been able to make time. And you show up to the fan base. I mean, I'd like to see guys like Anthony Davis or.
Matt Jones
So you're saying you. Are you. Are you saying, like, in year two of Pope, you're hoping to see more cow guys come back? Is that what you mean?
Caller
Well, just maybe, you know. Yeah, I mean, just be a little bit more outspoken about, you know, the college and maybe even come back and do some workouts with the guys or something. You know, just. Just having them back around, I think, would be huge.
Matt Jones
Well, I think I've been surprised that that's been as positive as it has. I mean, I appreciate the call. I mean, Wall did an interview just with me last week in which he said he was coming to work out with. Right. With the UK guys. You know, I mean, we've heard everybody from, you know, Devin Booker to Carl Towns to. To Anthony Davis make positive comments about Mark Pope. I mean, one of my biggest worries about Cal being gone was, would we lose all those guys? And Ryan, I feel like it's been the opposite. I've been pleasant. There's. I don't know that I've seen anybody take the view of. I'm not a Kentucky fan anymore.
Drew Franklin
No, I think last summer, the TBT guys were a big thing that kind of changed that. You know, Pope took the. His entire team to watch the TBT guys play. The TBT guys were working out with Pope's players. I think they did a lot to bond that bridge between those two eras.
Ryan
Yeah, I mean, the bigger issue is they're still playing. So that's why Walls just now do it. Harrison just now do it. I mean, these guys weren't coming back for Cal either. They're the ones we want to see the most, were in the middle of their NBA careers, and they're just not going to come.
Matt Jones
Has there been anybody who said they wouldn't?
Ryan
No.
Matt Jones
Or like that they.
Ryan
I've seen nothing but good. I mean, Pope took the picture with Rob Dillingham.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Ryan
Willie on our show while you were gone last summer during the tbt was like, oh, I'm all blue. Like, I want nothing to do with Arkansas.
Matt Jones
The only person I can remember who went to Arkansas was Malik Munt, but he's from Arkansas, so he's probably there being at home. And then was like, all right, I'll go see coach.
Ryan
I guess Tyler Euless, a little different job.
Matt Jones
And, I mean, I understand that. I don't. I don't. I don't really hold that again.
Ryan
I think those guys will be coming back as their careers die down, though.
Matt Jones
I totally. I totally. Listen, you only have one home, right? And Cal ain't gonna be at Arkansas forever, so they're not gonna make that their home. I mean, this is their home. And they'll. They'll. You know, life is long, and you end up going back to your home. 859-280-2287. Couple open lines. A little slow on the regular phones, but if you want to host us, Operator is standing by. Billy. 859-422-3299. We'll take a break and be right back. KSR.

He said, Remember if you want to host us in Northern Kentucky, 859-422-3299. I want to play something for you really quick. I love this. You know they had the, the military parade in Washington, right. I was, I was kind of like very worried about that. And then it looked like it was just like, didn't seem like that big a deal ultimately. But the Fox News showed it, right. And they had a woman on after it was over. Shannon. They were excited. She were excited to have her on. Oh, she was excited to be former defense intelligence person. Okay. So she's like used to work for the government.
Drew Franklin
Okay.
Matt Jones
And I guess she's an expert on national security. They bring her on and it's 9:30 at night. And here's all I would say, Drew, maybe somebody should have like vetted her before they had her on.
Ryan
Maybe a conversation.
Matt Jones
Maybe just a conversation because it's a little late at night. You know, it's been a day to party the 200 or celebrate 200th anniversary of the Army. Right. So maybe just say, okay, let's see if she's all right.
Ryan
I wouldn't have gone on the air at 9pm last week when I was out enjoying myself.
Matt Jones
Exactly. So Shannon, here was the beginning of her interview. A little bit, maybe a little inebriated. Go ahead. And realism. And the messaging that we saw here tonight from the commander in chief on the army's 250th birthday.
Unknown
I am so excited. Emily and Lucas Tomlinson, everybody. Like, this is incredible. Finally, the United States is back. I want to really thank all of our Army, Navy and Air Force officers who have been sacrificing their lives. Literally their families have been contributing to the mission most of the time for the past quarter of a century because of the mission mismanagement of the.
Ryan
The.
Unknown
Administrative states they've been fighting right there.
Matt Jones
There was more. They let her go for three or four minutes.
Shannon
I got like another 40 seconds. They cut her off here eventually.
Matt Jones
Oh, go to the end where they cut her off. Yeah, I want to hear, I want to hear the cut off.
Shannon
Let's just keep it real with our.
Unknown
New in chief dollar Jane Trauma. They are Prioritizing. Thank these officers for all of these sacrifices and all of that their families have been doing.
Shannon
Yes.
Unknown
Lawrence Jones, you are doing. You. You're rocking, man. Like you. You guys in prayer. Lucas, thank you. I want to thank.
Mario
We.
Matt Jones
We're up against you so much. Rebecca, thank you.
Zoe Saldana
And thank you for your service too.
Matt Jones
Heartbreak. A minute after the interview starts, we're gonna break real quick. I present Donna Trump.
Drew Franklin
A little bit of a thick tongue going on there, dude.
Matt Jones
I love it.
Ryan
Who's Donna Jane?
Matt Jones
Donna Jane. Lucas. Jane Camp. She kept saying Lucas. Yeah, Wonderful fella.
Drew Franklin
And the army.
Matt Jones
I love that she's getting started. Let's have her on more, longer. Shannon. I want to hear her analysis.
Shannon
Want ratings to go up. Who wouldn't watch that?
Matt Jones
I wasn't going to play any of the commentary besides that. So maybe, maybe it works. Let's go to Free Bird. What's up, Free Bird? Hey, guys.
Caller
Great Monday.
Matt Jones
Hey, Drew, Glad you back. Safe, man.
Ryan
Thank you very much. Glad to be back.
Matt Jones
Have we heard any preseason picks for Louisville in the acc? And the reason I asked that is I know the ACC is. I don't know, nothing compared to sec. So I mean, are they picked in the top tier? Oh, yeah. I think they're picked too. I think they. People think they'll be. Yeah, I appreciate the call. I think they're going to be second or third in the acc. I mean, Clemson's a favorite, but they're probably picked right there below them. Second, third, something like that. Yeah.
Ryan
Looking up on the fly. There's varies quite a bit, but the Miami and SMU are up there with them too. One I'm looking at has fourth, one has third. So they're in that top tier.
Matt Jones
Yeah, yeah. Which you know that. But they were good last year. I mean like, you know, they were what, nine and three last year or something? I mean they were. They were so. So yeah, they're going to be. Now what would they have be in this conference? 5 and 7.
Drew Franklin
There were obviously a lot of Louisville fans listening to our show the other day because they want corrected us pretty quickly on.
Matt Jones
Yeah, you know, they correct us. They were like Jones said, we. We didn't play Clemson. We beat Clemson. Yeah, well, you're right. Sorry. Mess that one up. You did play Clemson.
Ryan
It.
Matt Jones
That's nice. You did lose to Stanford, which I believe that was the only game they won all year was the game against you. So C' est la V. There you go, Dennis in Richmond. What's up, Dennis? Hey, two quick questions and I'll get off here. Number one, what do you think about the proposal? Entertainment system center around Kroger Field and any words on who's going to be or is UK going to have a general manager as Vince as the position? Events is going to have Both. Good questions. Those are good questions. Let's start with that. We didn't talk about this. Kentucky, as part of their. Appreciate the call. Dennis. As part of the proposal to the board of trustees asked to study. They didn't ask to get approved. Study. The idea of an entertainment district around. Right around Kroger Field. I didn't love it for the KS Bar purposes, but let me take my self interest out of the way. Do you like the idea of an entertainment district around Kroger Field? I don't know where they're going to put it, but let's just say they were to do it.
Ryan
Yeah. Kroger Field needs something and Tennessee's put in a huge one at Nayland Stadium. I know Kroger Field's not Nayland Stadium, but they're even upgrading that. As we've seen in years past, the tailgating lots have kind of gone away a little bit. Even this year they're bringing in corporate tailgates. They need some kind of something to add to the fan experience over there around the stadium.
Matt Jones
I don't even know what it would be financially. It works like we only have seven games a year. Like there's no parking. I guess. I guess there would be parking. If you have. Presumably you're gonna lose some parking to put that up.
Drew Franklin
Yes, you would.
Ryan
Yeah. The difference with Tennessee is their basketball stadiums in the same spot.
Matt Jones
So they share it and. And then it's a place where people already go. That's a part of Nicholsville Road that's not easy to get to. You know, in theory it's a good idea. I just don't know how financially. And you're going to take more parking away? Yeah, I don't know. Maybe. I mean, you know, we talked to.
Drew Franklin
Those people at Green Bay. Green Bay's got that kind of. That district, but they said they only use it eight times a year. Pretty much. That's about it. Eight times a year it gets full.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Ryan
That's the Packers.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Is it a cool idea? Yes. I don't. I don't know how it works there, though, because I don't know.
Drew Franklin
Gonna make all your money on eight Sundays?
Matt Jones
Yeah, hopefully Saturdays. If they made them on Sunday, it would be hard. They've got to have big church service services.
Ryan
Maybe you use it with baseball, too. But even that, that's not a huge crowd. You put it over there in the whole between all the complexes, they're gonna study it.
Matt Jones
Maybe they come up with something that makes a lot of sense. I just don't know that it works right there. But you're right. They need to do something. Sure. So maybe that's what makes it better. You can still call 859-422-3299 if you want to host us, we'll come back our number two ksr.
KSR - Hour 1: Vince Merrow’s Departure and Its Impact on UK Sports
Episode Release Date: June 16, 2025
Host: Matt Jones, iHeartPodcasts and Sports Talk 790 (WKRD-AM)
In this episode of Kentucky Sports Radio (KSR), hosted by Matt Jones alongside Drew Franklin and Ryan, the crew dives deep into the latest developments in UK sports. The primary focus revolves around the unexpected departure of Vince Merrow, the beloved coach of the University of Kentucky (UK) football team, to rival Louisville. The discussion is enriched with personal anecdotes, fan reactions, and critical insights into the broader implications for UK sports.
The episode opens with Matt Jones expressing his surprise and disappointment over Vince Merrow's decision to leave UK for Louisville, a move that has stirred significant emotions among fans and the sports community.
Matt Jones [05:01]:
"He is going to regret it. He's going to regret leaving UK for Louisville."
Ryan [05:17]:
"I couldn't believe it. I thought this might be the moment, but seeing it actually happen was shocking."
The hosts share their personal connections with Vince, highlighting their longstanding relationships and shared experiences.
Ryan [02:16]:
"I went to Mexico with a bunch of my best friends, including Vince, who also turned 40."
Matt Jones [07:42]:
"We all three went to Vince’s wedding and have been friends for years. It’s hard to see him leave like this."
A significant point of contention discussed is the farewell video released by Athlete Advantage, the entity managing NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) for UK football. The video, featuring dramatic piano and violin music, intended to honor Vince, was criticized by the hosts for its inauthenticity and overproduction.
Matt Jones [08:32]:
"They put some editing in it with sappy piano music. It feels fake and doesn’t resonate with the fans."
Shannon [10:12]:
"The dramatic music doesn’t make me feel sympathetic. It feels like he’s flushing his loyalty down the toilet."
Drew Franklin [08:03]:
"Athlete Advantage is supposed to support UK, but releasing a belated, overly produced farewell video undermines that support."
The hosts lament that Athlete Advantage’s approach fails to capture the genuine emotions of Vince’s departure and instead appears as an attempt to manipulate fan sentiment.
The departure has elicited strong reactions from the fanbase, with feelings of betrayal and disappointment being predominant. Caller Adam shares his frustration, pointing out the inconsistency in Vince’s loyalty.
Caller Adam [19:44]:
"I love Vince and appreciate what he did, but you can’t claim loyalty after leaving for a rival."
Matt Jones [20:12]:
"You can’t just be loyal for 13 years and then leave for your career. It’s foul."
The hosts agree, emphasizing how such moves affect the integrity and trust between coaches and fans.
A recurring theme in the discussion is the disconnect between coaches and the reality of fan sentiments, exacerbated by limited social media engagement.
Matt Jones [23:15]:
"Coaches like Vince often live in a bubble. Without real-time feedback from fans, they can't grasp the full impact of their decisions."
Drew Franklin [21:10]:
"Vince didn’t understand how deep the rivalry runs and how badly fans would take his move."
The hosts draw parallels with John Calipari, suggesting that prominent coaches sometimes lack the grassroots connection necessary to fully understand their fanbase’s emotions.
A brief segment features discussion about a live stream by Tyler Hero, who made controversial statements denying historical events prior to 1950. The hosts express bewilderment and concern over his credibility and the appropriateness of his commentary.
Ryan [28:21]:
"He doesn’t believe anything happened before 1950? That's just plain stupid."
Matt Jones [30:09]:
"How do you expect student-athletes to take anything seriously when the stream host can barely grasp basic history?"
Caller Jordan inquires about the potential return of alumni to the UK campus, especially with the recent positive engagement from current and former players.
Caller Jordan [32:28]:
"Do you think we’ll see more alumni coming back to campus since Pope's back?"
Matt Jones [34:01]:
"I'm surprised it's been as positive as it has. Alumni like John Wall showing support could bridge the gap."
The hosts remain hopeful that continued positive interactions will strengthen the ties between alumni and the current team, fostering a more unified community.
Towards the end of the episode, the discussion shifts to a proposal for developing an entertainment district around Kroger Field. Caller Dennis raises pertinent questions about the feasibility and potential impact of such a development.
Caller Dennis [42:28]:
"What are your thoughts on the entertainment district proposal around Kroger Field?"
Matt Jones [42:43]:
"Financially, it's hard to see how it works with only seven games a year. Parking could become an issue."
Ryan [43:01]:
"Tennessee’s approach with their basketball stadium works differently. UK might struggle to replicate that success."
The hosts debate the practicality of the proposal, considering factors like event frequency and urban planning challenges.
In this episode, Matt Jones and the KSR crew provide an in-depth analysis of Vince Merrow’s departure from UK to Louisville, exploring its ramifications on the sports community and fanbase. Through personal anecdotes, critical discussions, and engaging interactions with callers, the hosts paint a comprehensive picture of the current state and future prospects of UK sports. The episode underscores the delicate balance coaches must maintain between personal career aspirations and their commitments to their teams and fans.

Caller Adam [19:44]: "I love Vince and appreciate what he did, but you can’t claim loyalty after leaving for a rival."
