This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio Monday, June 23rd. I'm Matt Jones here in Lexington, Kentucky. You can give us a shout. It's Clark's Puppet Shop phone line, 859-280-2287. Aviation Auto Glass Text Machine, 772-774-5254. In this edition sponsored by the TJ Smith Law Office called TJ will make them pay. It has been a big weekend of sports. It has been insanely hot. Shannon, you're the only one that was in Louisville. I think Louisville is the hottest place. I would say pits of hell. Mojave Desert, Louisville, this weekend in terms of heat.
Shannon
Yep. And for all those people back in January when it was three degrees going, I can't wait for summer. Well, it's here. You got your wish.
Matt Jones
I saw a map that said that on Saturday Louisville was the like second hottest major city in America.
Ryan
Was it really?
Matt Jones
Yeah. I don't know if it's just because it was against the water or what. Now I was walking it. Dumb decision. I had fun. I mean, it was good for me, but dumb decision. I walked 16 miles. Oh my goodness, heat this weekend, Saturday.
Drew
On purpose.
Matt Jones
Well, I planned it without looking at the weather. Like, I planned it like Monday. I knew I had the day off and I was like, I'm going to do. And I even figured out what my route was going to be. And then Friday I saw like what the weather was and I thought, okay, wear suntan lotion. It's going to be all right. Start earlier in the morning, start at 9. Still almost fell over.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
So Shannon, just. I'll give you the route.
Shannon
Okay.
Matt Jones
All right. My house up to Douglas Loop. Okay. Over to like U of L. Pass Bellarmine, over to U of L. Down to the waterfront. Waterfront. All the way out River Road, turn onto Frankfort Avenue, Frankfurt Avenue, back to my house.
Shannon
What were you doing? What was going on that you wanted to take 16?
Matt Jones
Well, I just wanted to spend. I just wanted to. I was like I'm gonna do it, Drew. Leisurely.
Drew
Okay. So this wasn't for charity or anything?
Matt Jones
No, there was no one cheering me on.
Shannon
What's going on?
Matt Jones
It was gonna be. I was like, I'll go, and then, you know, I'll stop and I'll have breakfast somewhere. And then, you know, you get somewhere else and go bookstore and then somewhere else for lunch. And then, you know, bought that kind of thing. And it was all fine. I was actually kind of talking trash to myself, Ryan. Like, see, people think you can't do this heat. And then I got on River Road. Oh, Shannon, you know there's no shade on River Road.
Shannon
I'm aware.
Matt Jones
Yeah. And it's down there next to the river, so that heat just collapses on it. And there was a moment I said, well, might have to call an Uber to get home from here. But I made myself do it. The walk up Frankfurt Avenue was hard. And then we got home. But it was 27,000 steps.
Ryan
They issue heat advisories for a reason.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I knew it was hot. They didn't even tell me you picked.
Shannon
The hottest day of the year to go on a six day trip.
Matt Jones
The advisory didn't bother me. I could tell what it was like.
Drew
Did you take proper steps? Did you hydrate before?
Matt Jones
I did a pretty good job hydrating. Were you wearing a hoodie? I was wearing a T shirt. I did a pretty good job hydrating.
Ryan
I, I. Along the way.
Matt Jones
Yeah, Yeah, I would stop somewhere, have a, have a lemonade. Yeah, I got a cookie. Oh, it's good.
Drew
I usually see marathon runners stop and get a cookie and eliminate.
Matt Jones
Well, the.
Ryan
Most of the country's under a heat advisory for the next couple of days. Might as well just keep up with.
Matt Jones
It for the next week. I didn't even like getting my mail yesterday. I, I was down. I only did like 1700 steps. It was a much more. It was a much worse not doing anything day.
Drew
But we're on the front end of the weekend.
Matt Jones
But I did enjoy it. The city of Louisville was in, like, it felt like a very happy mood in terms of. There was. There were like multiple festivals. They had the Pride festival. They had the Juneteenth festival. There was like an art festival. So everybody was out. But most people, I don't think, stayed out as much as I did, Ryan. But there were a lot of people out.
Ryan
They go out in the morning, do their festival. Noon, I'm back home. I'm going home. I'm not fighting this heat anymore.
Matt Jones
Yeah, a lot of people. I think there Was like. Like at the pride festival. I think people had pride, but only enough until they start sweating Shannon. Then they're like, that's plenty of pride. Now it's time to go back inside.
Shannon
Yeah, an hour. Pride is probably enough on a day like that, you know?
Matt Jones
Yes, but. But then I watched my Reds collapse.
Ryan
Yes.
Matt Jones
Cardinals on Saturday. That was the worst. But Ellie De La Cruz puked and then hit a home run.
Ryan
Why not?
Matt Jones
Made. Made you in that heat too. I mean, they were in St. Louis. That baseball stadium can get very. As you know, can get very hot.
Ryan
Oh, yeah. We were watching the game and those guys, I couldn't believe they were out there. They kept showing the heat inde the field.
Matt Jones
It was wild. And so he. He pukes and what does they call it, Shannon? Puke and rally. Is that what it is? Rallied and then hit a home run. I thought that was pretty impressive.
Drew
I noticed as they got exhausted, they would run over the dugout for a lemonade and a cookie so they could get back out there and get back to being athletes.
Matt Jones
Are you mocking the lemonade in a cookie?
Drew
It's a choice. I like it. No, it was fun. I kept up with your all Series too. I don't know if you all were doing.
Matt Jones
Yeah, we lost two to one. Saturday was the bad one. Up five, two in the eighth. We blow it, you all win. I came back. Now, of course, the Yankees are this week.
Ryan
Yes.
Matt Jones
Sold my tickets for tonight. Huge, huge money.
Ryan
So they'll probably still have a big crowd even though they'll be.
Matt Jones
Yeah, tonight will be huge. Aaron Judge ate it. Jeff Ruby's last night, the whole team. Aaron Judge took the whole Yankees team to Jeff Ruby's on him. Jeff, being the subtle guy that he is, did put it out on Twitter. Jets. He doesn't like the publicity.
Drew
No, I mean, if Aaron Judge brings.
Ryan
The Yankees, he's really came camera shy.
Matt Jones
It was interesting. He ended up in the picture. That was weird to me too.
Shannon
I would just like to bend the server. Could you imagine those tips?
Matt Jones
Oh, think about what that tip would be. First of all, how much do you think it cost to take the whole team?
Shannon
Yankees team, man roster.
Matt Jones
I see a 28 man roster. They said Aaron boom paid for the coaching staff. So he just had to pay for the 28 players on the team. How much is that meal?
Drew
Are they drinking? Probably not drinking.
Matt Jones
Probably not a lot. They play today. So you think that's 10,000, $15,000? Yeah.
Drew
You're still at about 200 ahead, I would think.
Ryan
Yeah. At least no, drink 200 ahead.
Matt Jones
So you think only like 5 to $7,000?
Drew
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Unless paying Shannon, I'm getting. Oh, yeah, I'm getting extra shrimp.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Some oysters, maybe.
Drew
They got wagu, though. That changes things.
Ryan
Pile it on that Mac and cheese with the lobster in it. That costs like $30. I'm getting that.
Matt Jones
So sold today in. Good. Thank you to whoever paid for him. You just got me a nice little trip. Then tomorrow I was going to sell. But the other. If you look at the last 10 years of, or at least five years of Reds baseball, Ellie was the number one. But the number two is this pitcher pitching Tuesday night, making his debut.
Ryan
Oh, really?
Matt Jones
Chase Burns. Okay. He's the. He's probably the biggest pitching prospect they've had since Hunter Green. He debuts against the Yankees, so I think about that. They dare debut him against the Yankees.
Drew
Wow.
Matt Jones
Hey, kid. Glad to have you up here. Good luck. So I feel like you got to be. I was there for Ellie's first night there for Matt McClain's first night. Feel like I got to be there for Chase Burns first night.
Drew
Yeah, you got to go see one of the Yankees games. I get making a little bit of profit on. On the first one, but catch one of them, certainly, if it's got one of your future talents.
Matt Jones
If you were. If you were a manager, though, would you throw him in his first game?
Shannon
I like that Yankees strategy, because if you can go out there as a, you know, a rookie and not be intimidated by pitching against the Yankees, then you can go against anybody.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I'd say. I think that's probably fair, but it's a. That's a. That's a quite a stage to go putting bot.
Ryan
I think a lot of managers would do the tiptoe method. We're going to throw you against the Diamondbacks on a Wednesday night, you know, with the Rockies. Nope.
Drew
Maybe he went up and said, give.
Matt Jones
Me the Yankees, give me the Yankees. Aaron Judge, you want this?
Drew
Got to start against somebody. Why not go out with the bangs? You start off with the Yankees, you.
Ryan
Should go and say, at least you saw Aaron Judge play at least one time. That's kind of cool.
Matt Jones
No, I just. I think anytime it's exciting. When there's a dude I've been hearing about, like, he. Well, they drafted him, like there he was the second pick in the draft two years ago. So you've been hearing about him for two years.
Ryan
Last name's Burns.
Matt Jones
Burns.
Ryan
Okay.
Matt Jones
Burns. Yes. Chase Burns, second pick in the draft. So you got to go give Him a shot.
Ryan
Give him a shot. See how he does against the Yankees.
Matt Jones
Line him up like it was Paul Skeens in him.
Ryan
Was it really?
Matt Jones
I think so.
Drew
Being such a big game with his debut and then it being the Yankees. What kind of book do you pull out for that one? Is that a.
Matt Jones
This may be a sans book.
Drew
No book.
Matt Jones
No book.
Shannon
Not even a magazine.
Matt Jones
I might still take a magazine. Might still take a New York.
Drew
Just.
Matt Jones
Just in between innings, there is a lot of downtime.
Ryan
Does your seat generally have shade?
Matt Jones
No. Well, I mean, it'll be night game during the day. Like I went on Juneteenth. Brutal.
Ryan
Wow.
Matt Jones
Right in the sun. Not. You don't even get an inning of break. It is right in the sun. You know, over the years, I've told you about the two bald brothers, twins that sit to the right of me.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Shannon. I didn't bring it up because I was a little worried. I hadn't seen him at a game all year. And I thought, either they haven't renewed their tickets or, I mean, they're at.
Ryan
The age they're older.
Matt Jones
You're like, well, I hope it's okay.
Drew
You think life happens.
Shannon
You not remember, they were born together, they die together.
Matt Jones
Well, the thing is, I've had tickets for five years. They've been there. We've never spoken, remember? They sit directly to my right, one row in front of. Never spoken. But I feel like they're part of my family. They're the only people that I see there all the time. Two brothers. They don't speak to each other. They sit in dead silence, watch the game together. They look exactly alike and they never speak. But I feel like it's almost drew some comfort that they're there. We go through the first month and a half of season. I haven't seen them. And I was sitting there thinking, you know, if they're dead, I wouldn't even know.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And it would make me sad. Game last week, there they were, and I wanted to give them a hug. And then I realized, Shannon, they don't know me.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And so they don't feel the same connection to me that I feel to them.
Shannon
I feel like you should at least go up and speak to them now that you know they're still alive. Like, hey, glad to see you still here with us.
Matt Jones
You know, it's great to have you back here after. I thought maybe you were gone.
Drew
No, they were just tired of the Ritz. The summer of LA was done for.
Matt Jones
Them for a while.
Ryan
They're back on Waiting to the heat advisory. Like, now, let's go to the game.
Shannon
Maybe selling those tickets, you know, making.
Matt Jones
Some money like you did last thing. I also was in this weekend or this more of a social mood. You know, normally we're. We're so busy during the week and we talk so much that, like, on weekends, I don't. I kind of, especially if ke's not playing, like, don't really want to interact. But I decided if I was going to walk, I was going to do all this. I interact with people, right? So if I saw you in Louisville and you had a Kentucky shirt or hat on, I would make conversation.
Ryan
Okay, just give him a go Cats. Would you talk to them?
Matt Jones
I might just say, you know, yeah, I might say go Cats. Or then just start a conversation if they wanted to, then we. Whatever. A couple of times they knew who I was. Sometimes they didn't. Here was the universal thing. I probably talked to 20 people over the course of the weekend. 20 and oh. On opinions, number one, everyone thinks we're, like, winning the national championship this year. I don't know if Mark Pope realizes, but he has created an atmosphere of we're going to be really good this year. Drew the optimism for basketball and is through the roof with my 20 random Kentucky fans.
Drew
Yeah, I think that kind of speaks for the whole fan base. Even though we're only getting tiny snippets of these summer workouts. People are so fired up right now. They've done the couple of the satellite camps and even just watching them, you know, basically do nothing at those camps and interact with kids, it's getting the fans that are going to those so fired up.
Matt Jones
I didn't take his picture, but I saw the diversity of UK fans when I walked by the pride thing and there was a guy wearing the rainbow east of short shorts and a T shirt that said Pope is dumb. That's how I knew that everybody. But then the second thing, they all.
Ryan
Thought.
Matt Jones
Everyone thinks we're going 0 and 12. And I mean, not like, oh, are we going to be good? I'm worried about football. A, we stink. Ryan. The two viewpoints I've never seen at this maybe since what, Joker and Cal. You know, those first year or two of Cal and then Joker, I've never seen it. Everybody was just like, we are going to be awful. And out of the 20 people, two of the 20 had canceled their season tickets.
Ryan
You know, they. It is kind of like complete polar opposites. All the great optimism and now the pessimism about football. I almost wish the seasons were flipped. We had football second. Kind of have a great basketball season to ease the worry of a bad football season coming up.
Matt Jones
Finish on the bummer.
Ryan
Yeah, at least we have the, you know, great basketball season. So a football struggle, like it doesn't matter. We still want.
Matt Jones
I don't want that. I don't want that. I don't want to end with a bummer. But I mean, it's not a scientific study. It's 20 people I ran into at random cookie places or restaurants or, you know, coffee places. But the Kentucky optimism for basketball through the roof, pessimism for football down to the floor.
Drew
It does feel like the old days. Stoops did a great job of breaking out of this, but you know, Jared, we complaining about all the time. Like when madness hits, the excitement already flips. We can already feel it coming months, months way ahead of before we even get to that point.
Matt Jones

Matt Jones
You know, it did make me have more respect for you, Shannon. I don't. I couldn't do 50. Was it hot when you did it?
Shannon
Yeah, it was August.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Shannon
But I did start at night, so that.
Matt Jones
You started at night.
Shannon
But it was almost tougher because, like, the last 10, 15 miles was so hot.
Matt Jones
It was. We did the show. It was very hot.
Shannon
You've already walked 35 miles and it's 90 degrees. Yeah, those last.
Matt Jones
I have a lot of respect for you doing that. Like, I don't know how. I started as a goofy challenge, and you did it and you. You crushed it. So. Text machine is 772-774-5254. One person writes, Matt, I saw you walking on downtown. I was going to say something, but then I didn't. But. But way to go. You look like you're in shape. Better shape than I was, but not.
Ryan
It's still pretty impressive to walk 16 miles in that heat.
Matt Jones
Yeah, well, you know, especially for a.
Ryan
Man your age, you know.
Matt Jones
Wow.
Drew
Whoa.
Matt Jones
Okay. What was that about?
Ryan
Just. That's impressive.
Matt Jones
Man your age.
Ryan
It was impressive. Most men your age, I saw.
Matt Jones
Did you see Mario's face when you said that? He knew that was rude. You could. You could just see what he. What he did it. You know, over the years, I got a Shannon a funny message. A woman I. I haven't talked to since we dated in Law School, 2002, at Duke.
Ryan
Wow.
Matt Jones
She sent me a message on Facebook that said, my best friend at work son is coming to play sports at Kentucky. If you happen to meet him, please be nice to him. His name is Jalen Lowe.
Shannon
Okay.
Matt Jones
It's coming to play sports. Play sports at Kentucky. And I said. I wrote her back and said, I bet I'll run into him at some point. Pretty familiar with that. Yeah, he's going to be pretty good coming to play sports at Kentucky.
Drew
It is a small world situation.
Matt Jones
She works in Houston, Texas, works with her mom. Haven't talked to her since 2002. And that's the conversation we have.
Drew
Maybe this. What's this? What brings you all back together?
Matt Jones
She's married.
Ryan
I can't wait to watch.
Matt Jones
859-280-2287. Are you sad about the Pacers?
Ryan
I mean, really, the best team won. OKC was the best team all year. But the Pacers, the run they went on got everybody excited, especially for Pacers fans. Yeah, Pacers fans, man, that was awesome. They weren't supposed to be Cleveland. They weren't supposed to be the Knicks. They weren't supposed to compete against okc. Took it to Game seven and then your superstar gets hurt in the first quarter. I mean, I was proud of the Pacers.
Matt Jones
When Hal Burton makes that move and then they show it and it's clear he tore his Achilles. I'm not. I don't. I'm not even a Halliburton fan, but I felt bad for it. Terrible way to go. It's not just a terrible way to go because I think Okie Casey was a better team. They were going to win the series. I think they were going to win last night. But now he's probably out next year. Right. And so now you had all this thing where probably the fans could have been so excited going to the off season. Either way, probably were the favorites in the east next year. And then he's out for the year. That stinks.
Drew
Yeah. I was a neutral observer. That hurt watching him go down. And that slow mo replay. You could even see it snap. I mean, we all knew what happened.
Matt Jones
You knew immediately. Yeah.
Drew
Part of me thought though, even though it was very early in the game, the way he started, I think he might have stolen it from them in game seven.
Matt Jones
That's what they all get to delude themselves. Oh, we would have won if you weren't going to win. Oklahoma City was better.
Ryan
Yeah. Hit three.
Drew
Three on the crowd to shut up.
Matt Jones
Yeah. And he also used some language that you should not be using in a public form. But OKC was going to win. What about our guys?
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Sga.
Ryan
Yep.
Matt Jones
Okay. Didn't start at. Besides Quad A Green. Came here as a backup and became only the fourth player in history to win the mvp, win the scoring title and win the championship in the same year. The other ones will Kareem Abdul, Jabbar, Shaquille o' Neal, Michael Jordan and him. That's pretty good.
Ryan
Pretty good.
Matt Jones
When you couldn't start over Quad A Green when you first got here.
Ryan
It's amazing. The year he had will go down one of the best ever in NBA history. He just did it. He did everything. And they're such a young team. He's the old guy on the team. He drugged them to the victory.
Matt Jones
And then Case Wallace, who John Caliperi would not make the point guard. Cause we had Severe Wheeler on the team. Starts is the fifth or sixth man for a championship team. I mean, think about those two guys. What their careers were when they started here. And now they're the two that have a title. I'm not gonna say Shannon. That makes me frustrated at senior Caliperi. But it is also a testament to those guys.
Drew
There are two big examples of the side of the one and done era where we just got a little example of them at Kentucky and then they went on to do greater things. Wallace had a great game last night. 10 points off the bench when they were pulling away. He had his own little 50 run. Even though I'm pretty neutral in the NBA, I was very excited. Both those guys got a ring. And now Shea, is he the best Kentucky player to ever be in the NBA?
Matt Jones
We had this conversation last week. Right now he's probably at Issel, but it's like Issel Davis and him.
Drew
That's like the best season that you can have.
Matt Jones
Yeah. He was unbelievable. And you know, I did not. I think nobody saw it coming, what he's become. I didn't even really think he'd be a star. So he's way exceeded my expectations. I will say. I was saying Ryan Casey Walsh should have been the point guard all year long. We'll look back at that year and say they should have given the ball to him.
Ryan
Sure.
Matt Jones
Should have given the ball to him because he, he was always good and he was always that team's best player.
Ryan
And couple times he got the play point guard at Kentucky, like when severe was out, the injury were good. Really good.
Matt Jones
And then he went right back. And this isn't a criticism to Severe, but Kayson Wallace is an NBA really good player and they just wouldn't do it here.
Ryan
You know, he had some big steals. You know, he's become a good defender.
Matt Jones
He was a good defender here. That was the one thing he could do was guard.
Ryan
Yep.
Shannon
So I think there's a good chance we have the same conversation when Reed shepherd wins a championship with Houston or when Rob Dillingham. We're going to, you know, get off.
Caller
Yeah.
Matt Jones
He couldn't. He couldn't even play. It's very frustrating. Jonathan. Go ahead. Jonathan. Hey, Matt. How's it going? Good. What's up? Hey. I have a conspiracy theory about Vince Mayo. I. I think him and Mark are still good friends. And I think what's going to happen this year is he's gonna tank Louisville. And I think at the UK UofL game, they roll out a wooden horse at halftime and him and Kenny Payne jump out. I wish that were true. I think he's all in. I watched the press conference. I appreciate the call. He's all in. He's already calling us the school down the road.
Ryan
Right.
Drew
He worked. He fixed his L to.
Matt Jones
He's doing said I've been working on it. I keep getting pictures of him at Jeff Ruby's. Man's eating there every night. Listen, Vince, there, there are other restaurants. Like, Louisville's a good food city.
Ryan
Maybe you should take him out and show him some different restaurants.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I'm sure I'll see him sometime, but I think right now, I think the Louisville people probably are like, hey, just, you don't need to be fixed with Matt anytime soon.
Drew
I thought he might have been on your walk with you.
Matt Jones
No, I almost walked by Jeff Ruby's. Almost was like, let's go see if he's in there.
Ryan
He probably was. Odds are pretty high.
Matt Jones
He probably was. But no, he's, he's all in on them now. And we had the D commitment, right? Yes, we had the. Our number one player who he had brought decommitted. You got to think he probably ends up over there.
Ryan
I think so.
Matt Jones
So it goes. We'll take a break. Be right back. Ksr, TJ Smith, personal injury attorney. Call tj. He'll make him pay.

Ryan
Europeans are melting?
Matt Jones
Well, I don't know, like, completely. But there's a, there's a big soccer tournament in America right now, the FIFA Club World Cup.
Ryan
Okay.
Matt Jones
So all the teams that won Shannon, all the various leagues in the, in the world are here playing each other right now. Some of the games are in Cincinnati. Oh, are they really in Nashville? But everybody. But there's been a bunch of upsets. The teams from South America have been beating the teams from Europe even though the teams from Europe are better. And it's making the Europeans mad. But it's because it's so hot and it's. The Europeans can't handle it.
Shannon
Does it not get hot in Europe?
Matt Jones
I've never been. Not like it does here. No. I mean, it's a different level of hot here. Especially, you know, in Spain and Germany or, excuse me, Spain and Greece. It can get pretty hot. But when you get to England and Germany, it doesn't get as hot as it does here. So there was a German team played in Cincinnati, and they had their bench sit in the locker room during the first half because they said it was too hot shaded for them to sit on the bench. I'm not kidding. Look it up. This Dortmund team, they are in Cincinnati and they're. If you read the newspapers in Germany, they're complaining because they play again in Cincinnati Wednesday, and they're like, I can't do it. Can I do a. He may do a German accent. Is too hot.
Drew
That's very good.
Shannon
Bunch of wimps.
Matt Jones
Cincinnati is too hot.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And I. We don't like it. They're good.
Shannon
They're lucky we didn't have it in Arizona. Trouble.
Matt Jones
And then, like, the English teams, they played somewhere and it was 85 degrees, and they were complaining it was intolerable at 85.
Ryan
At 85, the South American guys on the other side of theater last.
Matt Jones
And the South American guys are playing great, and they're beating them because, Drew, they're not as hot as the Europeans. So they're like, what? Cincinnati? Come to Rio. It's a little different.
Drew
I saw a video of a fan. I think he might have been down in Florida. He was somewhere in America complaining about the heat, but he had the temperature that they'll, you know, automatically put on a video. And it said, like, 78. Yeah, he was going crazy gonna make it.
Matt Jones
There's a game in Nashville where one of the British teams was playing, and all these pale Brits were like, you know. And I think it's kind of funny watching them all be upset. But the German team stuck in Cincinnati. They are so angry right now.
Ryan
What a bunch of wimps. Go to the dugout. Go into the locker room for half. Don't even watch your team because you're too hot to sit on the bench. What a bunch of wimps.
Matt Jones
The draft, by the way, is Wednesday.
Drew
It's almost here.
Matt Jones
Do you all realize that the NBA draft is Wednesday?
Ryan
Well, they plugged in enough in the last couple days on the NBA playoffs, so.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So who's getting drafted? Kobe, Braya.
Ryan
Yeah, I think it looks like he's going to be.
Matt Jones
It looks like he's going to get drafted.
Drew
I would be surprised if he's not drafted at this point.
Matt Jones
So I think he's going to get drafted. Jackson, Robinson. J. Bill says yes. Most of the mock drafts don't have him in it, but J. Bill says, I guarantee you somebody picks.
Drew
Him the way he Said it was such confidence he had talked. Made me wonder if he had talked to a team or heard more than. Because he. Like you said, in most of the mocks, he's not mentioned, but Billis was all about it.
Matt Jones
And then Amari Williams is kind of projected right at the end.
Drew
Yeah, I'm gonna say yes on Amari.
Matt Jones
You're going to say yes on Amari.
Drew
It's going to the Knicks.
Matt Jones
So Bray, is everybody. Yes. Yes. Amari, you're going to say yes?
Drew
Yes.
Ryan
Yes.
Shannon
I say yes.
Matt Jones
I'm going to say no, but it's because I'm going to say yes on Jackson Robinson because Jay Billis is way too confident about it. What are you going to say?
Ryan
Well, I'm going to say yes because I feel like if Jackson Robinson hadn't gotten hurt, he would have gotten drafted. So I think they're going to draft him on that.
Drew
I will fade Jay Billis and say no.
Matt Jones
So look in the camera. Tell him, Jay Bilis, he's wrong.
Drew
Jay Billis, you're wrong. You're wrong often.
Matt Jones
Wow, that was hard. Shannon, you going with your friend Jay Billis? Are you going on your own?
Shannon
Yeah, my bff, J. Billis, he knows his basketball. I'm going to say he's right. And Robinson does go. So I got all three going.
Matt Jones
So I'd say you get all three. The reason I bring this up, let's say we get all three. Arkansas is only good. Get one.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
A dude's going to get drafted.
Ryan
Sure.
Matt Jones
Which I count him as us anyway. And we're getting four.
Drew
They're getting zero.
Matt Jones
So really we're getting four. It would be. I mean, it will be a height of irony if Mark Pope gets more people drafted in his first year than. Than John Calperi. That is something that no one on earth would have predicted. No one would have predicted.
Drew
That mean. Not that there was a ton of complaining about Pope last year after that press conference and the excitement, but the. One of the big negatives was like, well, the NBA draft won't matter anymore. We won't have guys to fall in the NBA. Nobody will get picked. And here we are with more Kentucky players to talk about than Arkansas.
Matt Jones
Could I have gotten on more Kentucky players get. Get picked in Arkansas.
Ryan
Especially when Arkansas had Boogie Flan going into the season.
Matt Jones
He was playing the Trayvon Brazil guy. You had Johnny Davis that he. He said what he would get him drafted. A dude. Big Z. Carter, Knox. Carter, Knox.
Drew
Billy Richard.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
D.J. wagner. I mean, they had eight potential guys to get drafted and he may end one and we may end up with three.
Ryan
And Brea may get drafted before a do.
Matt Jones
Even that do probably goes before him. But what if Bray gets drafted before I do? It's possible.
Drew
It's going to be close.
Matt Jones
That'll be close.
Drew
Some of the mocks have Brea right next to a do at the beginning of the second round. It. I mean, no one expected this. And heck, next recruiting class, Pope might end up with more five stars and higher rated players than Cal in the. In the 2026 class, too. He's doing well.
Shannon
There going to be the greatest night. One player again.
Matt Jones
One person writes, matt, that German accent may be your best one. You should do it more. It's hard to do that one.
Drew
It does seem like it takes a lot of energy. You got very red.
Ryan
You're a better Wukosh accent than.
Drew
Yeah, well, I'm the Interrupted by Matt Jones show. A few weeks ago you debate debuted an Australian one. I'd never heard the French one.
Matt Jones
Excuse me. Very good, Bob in Jamestown. Go ahead, Bob. There's a big weekend in Russell County. My friend Pam and Terry Stevens Kentucky Derby horse Chunk of Gold came in, place second in the Ohio Derby. And then Mark Pope brought his Russell County. Oh, yeah. Mark Polk came down and I mean it was awesome. He brought the team down, opened it up the gym and Russell Springs there for everybody, all the, the fans, the children. I mean they. Everybody had a ball. I saw a lot of those videos and I appreciate the call, Bob. I saw a lot of videos of the UK player. You know, they went to Russell county and to London.
Ryan
Right.
Matt Jones
They went to the two places most hit by the tornado. And I had people write me who went. I saw the videos. They ended up. They did the camp, but then I think they just opened the doors and let people come and get pictures and autographs. And I heard universal praise, obviously for Mark, but also how good the players were. Jaden Quaintance especially. I just had people say, seemed like the nicest kid in the world. I have people all weekend on the text machine were sending pictures of their kids with the various players. You know, that's. That's what you want. I mean, like it look what an awesome thing for them to do this weekend in two places that I think it was really appreciated.
Ryan
Yeah. To reach out to these areas that needed a little boost, a little something to make them feel good about what's happened recently. So, yeah, very, very good honor. And this is what this summer is when you start hearing about some of the Players personality. Like about this time last year, Kirk Kreis is the guy that was. Everybody was talking about. Was very personable. So it's good to hear about Jaden Quadens because I knew really nothing about him outside of his basketball ability.
Drew
A guy on KS board was at the one in Russell county and he was kind of doing updates throughout and he was talking about how close the team is. Like they're all buddies and cutting up already. Look very close. But the thing that stood out, he. He said this is already modi about his team.
Matt Jones
Really.
Drew
She said when he speaks, everyone listens and him and away. It's very clear they're already leading.
Matt Jones
Yeah, he was a leader in Alabama too, so told you that.
Ryan
Remember when you interviewed him, he said he is the leader in the locker room. He's the one everybody gravitates towards. He's the guy that's good.
Drew
There was one negative though. I think this one happened at North Laurel's camp. Brandon Garrison lost in knockout to a nine year old.
Matt Jones
Oh, no.
Drew
I don't know what that means in the future, but we can't be losing the nine year old.
Shannon
I don't have starting anymore after hearing that story.
Matt Jones
He's not gonna start.
Drew
All right.
Matt Jones
No, Cody, Go ahead, Cody.
Drew
Hey, Matt.
Caller
I had a basketball and a football question for you. Okay, I'll start with basketball. I think a lot of the fan base is at least optimistic in us winning a championship in say, the next five years. We can at least agree it's possible. So what advice would you have for Pope? That he doesn't do what Cal does and wins a championship early, but then goes another decade without anything. And then my football question is, is it really all that bad if we kind of fall apart this year? Not fall apart, but have the season we're expecting. And that forces Mitch to make a hire because, yeah, it's a great. Three of his hires have been red hot.
Matt Jones
Both of their. Both of their questions are good. So let's start with the basketball. Obviously. I want. I appreciate the call. You can't. Titles don't grow on trees. Win it, you know. Did it hurt Tubby that he won a title in his first year and that was the expectation? Sure. But guess what? He won a title. Right. Did it hurt Cal that they were so good the first few years? Maybe. But he fell apart with or without those early titles. When. If you have a chance, as I always hear people say in other sports, the amount of time you have to win a title is small. When you get it, you Got to.
Ryan
Take advantage of it.
Matt Jones
Second thing is, in football, I want this team to win six games, seven, whatever. But six specifically, I want to see us make a bowl. I'd like to see Mark Stoops working. If it's not going to work, if the six wins are not going to come and it's seven, then I'd rather it be three or four. I want it to be an easy. The worst scenario for Kentucky is 5 and 7. Yeah, that's the worst scenario. That's enough success to convince them to keep going. And I know 5 and 7 doesn't sound successful, but you probably to do that, have a good win.
Ryan
Got to beat somebody good.
Matt Jones
You're going to beat somebody good. If you've gone 5 and 7, you improve from last year, you improve from last year. But the fans will not be won over at 5 and 7. So the worst record you can have is 5 and 7. That's the worst. It's kind of like cows. Last year I didn't want us to lose to Oakland. I wanted us to go to the Final Four. But what would have been worse would have been beating Oakland and losing to NC State in the second game because you could have talked yourself into statement, made the Final Four and we would have been right back floating to where we were. By losing Oakland, it made it clear what needed to happen. That's how I am this year. Number one, I want us to win six. I want Mark to succeed. I want it to crush it. But if that's not going to happen, then I'd rather it be three or four than five because five is no man's land. Do you agree?
Drew
Oh, yeah. Just make it obvious. I hope it goes well. Heck, you know, I have as many stoops frustrations as everyone else. I fire off my own motivated jokes about once a week. But I really want him to do well. But if it's not going to end well and you're not going to get to a bowl game, just rip the band aid off and make it ugly. So it's a clear decision.
Ryan
The whole buyout thing we talked about last week, though, I think makes it a little more tougher decision for Mitch than we realize. I didn't realize that's what it was laid out.
Matt Jones
Yeah. But there may come a point maybe you have to. That you. You have to a 592-80-228 said we're going to pick our place, that we're our next place to go in the game that I've created.
Ryan
Okay, good.
Matt Jones
So I'll tell you about the game and all of that, but we'll be right back.

Matt Jones
Oh, good song choice, Shannon Lynn. Len, right?
Shannon
I'm surprised you know that one. One hit wonder from the 90s.
Matt Jones
I remember I loved it. Steal my sunshine. Yeah, I remember. This is when I was in college. 859-280-2287. Speaking of places, it was hot. College World Series. Hot on the field. Also hot with the manager.
Ryan
Yes, it was.
Matt Jones
Manager comes out, goes, hey man, what's happening over here? Next thing you know, he's kicked out. One of his chubby friends falls over. Then the first base coach gets kicked out. Then it's two game suspension. Everybody loses their mind. First of all, shitty. You gotten kicked out.
Ryan
I don't know what he said, but if he said one of the magic words, that's. That's why I assume what happened.
Matt Jones
Can't kick him out. Second game, World Series.
Ryan
The first First Inn.
Matt Jones
Can't kick him out.
Ryan
What if he says one of the magic words?
Matt Jones
I don't care.
Drew
How many times did he say it?
Ryan
Yeah, yeah.
Matt Jones
First of all, I looked at his lips. I didn't see a Magic word.
Ryan
Okay.
Matt Jones
But let's say he did you eat it. It's first inning.
Ryan
I read online that somebody thought it was he wanted to get kicked out to motivate his team.
Matt Jones
He clearly based on the comments after the game. I don't know where you saw that. They're not kicking you out in the first score was one to nothing.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Shannon. He did not do it on purpose. And then the one guy walks over there falls down.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And then get and blames the first of all he fell on his own. He did absolutely completely felony zone.
Shannon
And they game suspension gave him a.
Matt Jones
Two game suspension because he said he bumped the upper that's on his own weight. They that you cannot help. That chubby little can't keep his balance.
Shannon
His poor form on the umpires, you got to have some restraint. Especially first inning championship.
Matt Jones
College World Series championship.
Shannon
As the umpire you have to take it a little bit there you.
Matt Jones
Yes. And apparently he was only asking what was the warning for? Like he wasn't even arguing. And then when he was like he the manager was a little in his post game press conference. He's like he looked at me and shoot. A grown man. You can't shoe a grown man. Well, okay, slow down grown man. Like maybe he just didn't want to talk to you. Either way, you can't kick him out. Can't keep these. The groups of people in society that have the highest opinions of themselves versus least ability to hear a different opinion are college coaches and referees. And then you put them in the same place.
Ryan
Recipe for disaster.
Matt Jones
It is just little man syndrome. And the question is who gets to be the littlest man? And in this case I think the umpire was a littler man than the manager.
Drew
The ump was by far the smallest man. I did enjoy the manager after the game saying, I can't be responsible for another grown man's athleticism. Talk about how it was funny. He's like, I didn't bump him.
Matt Jones
It's not my problem.
Drew
He can't stand on his own two feet.
Matt Jones
He goes, I always think you should take responsibility for your actions. And I will. But I can't be responsible for another grown man. It's athleticism that was kind of fun.
Ryan
And ESPN put it in slow motion. You see him fall and bump. Fumble and stumble around too, man.
Shannon
Like he did like a flip over backwards.
Matt Jones
Yeah. He was like Ric Flair flopping around on the ground. Yeah. Come on, man.
Drew
The coach said it best with that. And he said he was embarrassed because he fell down in front of 25, 000 people. And he took it out on me. And that's what happened.
Matt Jones
That's exactly what happened. He was embarrassed. Plus, there's a little bit of. It's LSU and it's Coastal Carolina. Like, I'm not saying help them, but don't take away their manager. Right. As soon as they get there, the Chanticleers.
Ryan
It was crazy. That happened right off the ball game. That's why when it first happened, I saw that online, that he did that on purpose. He got kicked out on purpose to motivate his team.
Matt Jones
Not the last year. It was only one to nothing, like the game had just started. There's no way that was on purpose. That ump is these. These umpires and referees. It is not about you. The only person who makes themselves more about something that's not about them is Stephen A. Smith at the NBA Finals. But these refs, these nights, not about you, man. It's about the teams and they insert themselves and it's. That's what happens. Greg. Go ahead, Greg.
Caller
Hey, guys, I want to be as optimistic as anybody about this basketball season, but I remember in the spring, all the talk was that we desperately needed one more shooter and we lost out on a few guys. Did we ever get a shooter? And if we didn't, how's that going to impact this season?
Matt Jones
Well, I mean, they ended up. It depends on whether or not you think Aberdeen is a shooter. Right. So when they wanted that shooter, that person that is, to use the phrase, a shooter, they didn't get, they lost the kid from Sam Houston State that Ryan guaranteed was coming, but then they got Aberdeen. Now, is he. The question is just how good a shooter will he be? Well, he's. He's not Kobe Braya, and he's probably not even the kid from Sam Houston State, but he's good. So the question is between Aberdeen, Chandler, Noah, Cam Williams, you know, and all that, do you have guys good enough to shoot? And we'll just have to wait and see. So I appreciate the call. There is no Kobe Brayer coming in, but I do think they have 10 guys that can make a three.
Drew
And we all wanted a shooter. We wanted someone you think of as a true sniper, like Kobe Braya. But part of that was also Kentucky fans just wanted an absolute perfect roster.
Matt Jones
Yeah, we want every play.
Drew
Yeah. I mean, we were already pretty set even before Aberdeen.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Drew
But it's like, oh, one more thing. Let's get a guy that shoots 45.
Matt Jones
3.
Drew
You didn't get exactly that. But Aberdeen can Shoot it. And then, of course, he has other things he brings.
Matt Jones
Like at a Vegas buffet. Like, 80% of the food would be fine. But you want all of it.
Drew
Yeah, we want the best of the best.
Matt Jones
We want all of it. Liam, go ahead. Liam.
Caller
Got some points. Optimism about Kentucky football. Shockingly.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Caller
Calzada, he beat Alabama. I mean, that's a good start. He was the first team all. Southland Conference qb. Who else was first team off? Set off on conference? Cam Ward at Incarnate World. Is that Calzada? The next Cam Ward?
Matt Jones
Look at that. It's two. Two pretty good points coming. I like it. Keep them coming.
Caller
And is Mark Stoops motivated enough to get us over the hump this year?
Matt Jones
All right, so the motivated thing. How much time we got, Shannon?
Shannon
30 seconds.
Matt Jones
All right, we said this. We said this last Friday. I'm all in on the motivated thing. I know it started as a joke. I know it started as a joke mocking Mark Stoops. Now they got to lean into it.
Ryan
Agreed.
Matt Jones
Lean into it. That picture that the one dud made with him smoking the cigarette and having the bourbon, it's cool. Like, I know it was used to make fun of him, but it's actually kind of cool. UK needs to lean into it. Motivated. Mark Stoops might be all we have this year. So I'm for it. And I hope UK gets by it, too. We'll be right back.
